Length 3hr + Bonus Arena Modes

If you have played the first Alan Wake game, you are looking at more of the same. Third Person Action Combat, with a dark theme, combat has been rebalanced and is the main focus of the game, and the story has been reduced.

AW: American Nightmare follows on from the first game, but it is not a sequel, it is a side story happening during the time Alan is trapped in the lake. The events of AW: American Nightmare happen solely with the realities of the Lake / Darkness and at the minute looks like they have little to no impact on the oncoming sequel. Interactions in the game with the characters, may or may not have happened, this includes Mr Scratch who has been announced to be in the sequel. So Yeah, he does not die at the end of the game, no matter how cool the scene is.

The most I can give the game for its narrative, is that it is a good intro to who Mr Scratch is, and what he is capable of. The live action scenes of Mr Scratch are well presented and do the character well in creating a manic dark persona. You will be seeing potential events that Mr Scratch did in the Real World / Night Spring World.

AW: American Nightmare is mainly a combat game, weapons in the game have been rebalanced. Flash Bags have been completely nerfed, while there is a distinct power difference in combat weapons. Most weapons in the game can only be unlocked by collecting enough manuscript pages, while the weapon cases can be found in the early game you will not have access to them. Manuscript pages are persistent through playthroughs, and as such you can unlock the stronger weapons early on your second playthroughs, this does make the harder difficulties considerably easier.

There are a much larger variety of enemies in AW: American Nightmare, enemies are not all weak to light some multiply when hit. Other enemies are stronger, requiring far more damage. This change really makes the action moments more challenging, you need to react to each enemy differently and managing fights has a higher difficulty. You can no longer just lead enemies with the light.

Effectively the story of AW:American Nightmare, is that you are trapped in a loop until you are capable of fulfilling the writings on the page and changing reality to get rid of Mr Scratch. Each loop that you go through the story gives you more parts of the page to tell you how to trigger the event. While there are interactions with the characters in the game, they are limited with the only interesting part is they can also remember each loop like Alan and make changes to the game each time he returns.

The maps are very limited in AW: American Nightmare, there are only three maps you will be playing through and all are fairly small, and you will be playing through each one three times throughout the game. While each of the run throughs have variations, it is more that they are streamlined with each time Alan returns to the location, there is less the player has to complete before they can move on.

Overall the combat in AW: American Nightmare is an improvement and a lot more fun, with the waves of enemies offering a varied challenge. The bonus combat modes are fun to playthrough, and did offer a bit more out of the game. But, I would not recommend the game to someone who wants more of the story, this game is really for combat and those who really loved the first Alan Wake game.

If you want more Alan Wake, then make sure to go and play Control and the AWE dlc. Control is a lot more active combat, but the DLC really expands the narrative of Alan Wake and is really worth playing through.

Shorter, more action-oriented followup to Alan Wake. There's a bit of a tonal shift, but American Nightmare takes place a few years after the first game, and while some folks have complained about it, I see it as character growth.

This whole thing feels like it should've been DLC, and is priced accordingly.

It would've been better and popular if the arcade levels had an online Co-OP feature, otherwise those single player arcade levels are just wastage, and pointlessly Remedy focused on.
Overall good story line, recommended playing this after playing the original game 'Alan Wake', this stand alone 'American Nightmare' version is better off if sold as a DLC with in the original game.
And that's all, I'm not going to spoil the short story line and maps.

I'm a huge Alan Wake fan, and in anticipation of Alan Wake 2 coming out in 2023, I decided to play through the first game and this one. From the look of the reviews, it is clearly very divisive among players and one would expect that the game itself would reflect that. However, after playing the game myself I believe that this is a bit of an unappreciated gem in the Alan Wake franchise. After all, this game was originally released as an Xbox Live Arcade game.

I'll admit that I may have a biased view on this game since I played the first game and know a lot about the games lore which may impact how I view the game. Regardless, it does interesting things with the main Alan Wake formula and expands a bit on it.
Firstly, the story would have to be its weakest element. The most basic premise is that you are trapped in a time loop and are trying to break free from it. While that may turn off some players, the game does explain why it is in that case. If you were to collect the manuscript pages scattered throughout each level, it mentions that the entire setting and story is adapted from an episode of the in universe show Night Springs that Alan worked on. The pages also help flesh out how The Dark Place works exactly as Alan tries to use his story to escape from it. It might get a bit tedious having to do the same things over and over again but the game does its best to cut down on it (and whether it succeeds is entirely up to you. I think it does).
Secondly, the game play. As I mentioned, the game takes an interesting spin on the Alan Wake formula and I think it's highlighted the most here. To start, instead of straightforward, linear levels, each area acts as a mini sandbox with different points of interests to explore. Everything is close together and, while there might not be much to do apart from fight enemies, look for manuscript pages, listen to radio and tv broadcasts, and do the quest items, they serve their purpose well enough.
And speaking of enemies, the enemy roster brings its own spin. In the first game, you primarily deal with enemies that strut straight towards you with the occasional flock of birds in between encounters. While the Taken in the first game are a fine enough enemy on their own, the types of Taken there are range from the standard 3; Regular, heavy brute, and weak flanker (and there's also the possessed objects, the speedy phantoms and the afformentioned birds). While they were fine enemies, it was a real small roster that only differed from one another in small ways. In this game, however, enemies are more varied.
While you still have the standard three, you also have four more enemies that specialize greatly; Splitters can divide into two weaker enemies if you were to shine bright lights on them and are able to split up to 8 enemies in total, grenadiers can toss bombs at you and force you to not stay in one spot, Birds make a comeback but can form into a single enemy that can transform back into a flock if you shine a light at them, and giants are by far the most tanky and damaging. There's also spiders, but they aren't worth mentioning. Enemies like this give the game a better feeling of tension between encounters as you have to juggle between different strategies between the standard enemies and the specialized ones.

To help with that, the weapon roster also has been expanded upon. Instead of 1 pistol, 2 kinds of shotguns, and a hunting rifle, you're given a much more varied arsenal. My personal favorites would have to be the SMG which can spray down enemies quickly as long as you have the ammo, the automatic and sawn off shotgun (the first being a quick firing powerhouse and the second being.... well, DOOM), and the crossbow which is able to piece through enemy shields and even instakill some of the heavier enemies at the cost of ammo capacity and fire rate. Each weapon is fun to use in its own way, especially the more niche weapons such as the crossbow or the classic Flare gun. combined with the more varied enemy roster, and you end up with encounters that are much more memorable and engaging.
And finally, this game also has a sort of horde mode where you're tasked to survive for 10 minutes, or until daybreak according to the game. You're faced with an increasingly difficult amount of waves and have to put your skills to the test if you want to survive while trying to receive the best score. While the 10 minute time limit might be a bit too short for a horde mode, its a nice addition to the game.
Which brings me to the point I want to make; It's a nice addition to the Alan Wake franchise. It may not be perfect but that's because it's not trying to be Alan Wake 2 (or at least way back in 2011). The game clocks at around 5 or so hours total and again that might be a turn off for some, but if you like Alan Wake as much as I do, i'm sure you'll find some kind of enjoyment from it. I know I did.

Alan Wake was one of the best unique gaming experiences I've had. It's one of my all time favorite games and will be for ages. The storyline left me speechless everytime, one of the best I've experienced.

This game is absolutely gorgeous! It has one of the best atmosphere I have seen. Outstanding forest environments, astounding lighting effects, smooth and fluid animations, amazing camera, perfect pacing, the attention to detail, the soundtracks, the acting and dialogues, the charachters development is all wonderfully done, and it all leaves you in an incredible cinematic experience.

The presentation creates a genuine survival/horror ambience that's hard to shake and I couldn't imagine there's any way to improve it.

Although the game might seem long and repetitive at some point, but with its gripping story and epic gameplay, you cannot help but want more. It is indeed a superb psychological action thriller that will keep you guessing the end. A brilliantly told ending that leaves you with questions more than answers.

I think everyone needs to experience Alan Wake!

I heartily recommend :)

Cool little game and a cool addition to the Alan Wakeverse i guess.
Works perfectly fine with the kind of TV show aesthetic that the first game was going for, but this time we get a different type of show with a different scenario and a way more action oriented adventure.

Plays pretty much the same as the original, but you get 3 small areas that you can explore as you complete different objectives rather than the sort of linear gameplay from the first game.
Storywise, the game takes place after the main game, but kinda doesn't. Can work as a spin-off or a continuation since so many things are up in the air with this series, which kinda works.

You are looking at a really small single player game, around the 4 to 5 hour mark if you dont rush things, can be a bit more if you are going for a completionist run.

Fun game, would recomend if you need more Alan Wake in your life. You get an an uzi and an assault rifle on this one. Also a nailgun.

A fun standalone DLC, shame that Remastered owners on current consoles can't play this DLC :/ I get more Twilight Zone vibes off this DLC. I don't recommend fully completing the achievements though, bit of a grind & pure luck. Well I've 100% the main game & standalone achievements! Bring on Alan Wake 2 in 2023! Really hope the PC version isn't an Epic Games store exclusive...

Especially now that the full franchise is available, CONTROL was equally fun, and a possible sequel bridging the two (CONTROL and WAKE) is coming? While it's definitely shoot-em-up focused and the enemies get exhausting, ultimately if you want a Twin Peaks game experience, start with Alan Wake, move on to Nightmare, shift to Control....and if you're still waiting for whatever the next Remedy release will be that ties them together, even give Quantum Break a shot too. Ultimately, Remedy has a game style they stick to, and the Wake/Control games in particular are pretty great.

One warning: THIS title in particular was built on and around a timeloop mechanic, so a very light spoiler unless you're brand new to video games: It was designed as a spin-off DLC, not a full sequel and it's tiny compared to Alan Wake. There are 3 main areas you essentially revisit 3 times each. While some expand out for certain parts of the game, you'll feel the repetition of the areas pretty quickly. It works within the story context though.

An intriguing entry in the series that intentionally accomplishes nothing in the on screen narrative. However, the implications of how Alan constructs his power are fascinating. They lay a foundation that is worth learning for the next entries in this universe. Further explored in Quantum Break and Control.

Definitely worth the price. Read the pages. They know magic ✨

American Nightmare is like a book with a few short stories. While it couldn't compete with the depth of the original game, especially with the long story and large maps, I actually could enjoy this more than the original. The game mechanics are more complex here and it doesn't repeat itself so much as the original. I was expecting a true sequel to Alan Wake after playing this, with a great story again and the new game mechanics of American Nightmare, but unfortunately it was canceled or something.
Anyway, I recommend this game to anybody who did like the original Alan Wake but got bored a bit by it's mechanics, American Nightmare shows what Alan Wake could be.

The story is nowhere near the original. This is just 3 missions you have to play over and over. I stopped on the 3rd time because I'm sick of doing the exact same thing. I know it's not a full game, but an uninteresting story you have to play over and over is just really bad game design. 2/5

This is a big step down in quality from the original Alan Wake game. It takes away everything that made the first game good — story, setting, atmosphere — and turns it into an arcade shooter. The combat was the least interesting aspect of the first game, and this game is nothing but combat (there is a story mode but it is short, repetitive, and boring). If you want to play an Alan Wake game, stick with the original.

I won this game through Steamgifts.

I didnt really enjoy playing this game. The graphics were really bad, even on highest settings, as an example, the grass textures were just a block that was slightly transparent. I didnt enjoy the fact that the most interesting cutscenes were acted out by real life actors and the other cutscenes looked bad because of the graphics.

I would say the only pros of this game were the soundtrack, many of the songs were fantastic, and the fact that Mr. Scratch was hot in the black suit (the real life actor one).

I really wanted to like this game, but it just doesn't do it for me. Alan Wake deserves a much better followup than this. Going back and forth between the same locations and subpar dialogue are hardly reminiscent of the game this is a spin off from.

Arcade mode is fun though.

As a sequel, American Nightmare is so-so. The story looks cheap and gameplay monotonous. 3 levels that you need to complete 3 times. Best ever gamedesigner's decision.
This is more DLC than standalone title.

It is both a departure from the previous game's tone, and a logical contuniation.

The first game starts slow, almost subtle. Throughout the story, it ups the antics with Alan first stumbling through that nightmarish scape, taking more initiative as the game progresses.

The shift in tone is dramatic! Here, the paranatural shit hits the fan with Alan playing the hero role, the champion of the light. Can't say I dislike it, because I do! It's rather different, there's more action, more guns & ammo right off the bat but it oozes a similarly dense well-crafted horror movie-atmoshpere (or rather a horror serial atmosphere, i.e. Night Springs).

Alan's pieces on how exactly to rewrite reality on the other hand, got quite the philosophical quality to them.

Trapped in a nightmarescape (and a deliciously fine crafted one, I might add), but it feels like you're taking control of it. Fighting it, which, coincidentally, the writing is about. I do love me games where writing & how it feels to play complement each other.

If you can manage your expectations and don't expect more of the same, instead expecting more of the same horror quality, you won't be disappointed.

The worst sin this game commits is that it's boring. Alan Wake was a really cool game and this just feels like it does almost nothing with what made the original great. Like, I could go for an hour talking about how much I don't like it.
Like, if you want to get this because you want to get caught up for the Control DLC. I will tell you right now, it's not important to that at all. Save your money and, more importantly, your time.

Not as good as the main game, but good enough if you finished the first one and want some more gameplay. There is a survival mode which is really good and enjoyed it a lot. Recommended

Excellent addition to the Alan Wake universe and a nice self-contained game and story the new weapons and taken enemy types really help to make the action fresh and the fight till dawn mode is loads of fun.
Gameplay became more dynamic, but the feeling of fear was lost, nevertheless, the storyline is good, Mr. Scratch is a perfectly written character.
Overall Alan Wake's American Nightmare is an improvement on the original game.
I do feel, however, that Remedy will have to come up with a stronger storyline to keep the player’s interest for a full-length campaign in Alan Wake 2.

As a fan of original Alan Wake game, I really liked this spin-off. However, I didn't rly like the fact that they used the same level 3 times. Yes, the levels are a little different + at different levels we have different enemies, but I would change the levels a bit more.

Wow. After finally playing Alan Wake I was pretty disappointed in it. I had lots of problems with it, but it still felt like an honest effort with some good content and I could understand why people liked it.

I can’t say the same about this follow-up game. It just felt cheap and lazy from one end to the other. Just cashing in on the popularity of Alan Wake. I’m not sure if they felt embarrassed by it, but I sure felt embarrassed for them.

I don't get the hate honestly.

Yes, it only has three areas that it uses in a loop, yes it doesn't offer a satisfying conclusion to the first game, yes it doesn't even feel like a full fledged game sometimes, yes Mr. Scratch bits can feel a bit overacted -in my opinion it was all intentionally done anyway- and FMV cutscenes can feel a bit cheap but the core gameplay is still there and it's as fun as ever, it has a great soundtrack -always a delight to hear more OGoA songs and it uses Club Foot rather nicely- and it features ample enemy variety. On top of that -though I've tried only one level of it- the arcade mode seems fun if you are interested -if you like the core gameplay of the game you'll definitely enjoy it- too.

It seems as Remedy were just testing to waters for the possibility of a future game for the franchise and released this because they had a cool little gimmicky idea in their hands and remember, this game was released as an Xbox Live Arcade game so if you treat it as such and wait for it get on sale (I got the game under a %75 discount) you'll have fun I bet.

+ Graphics improvement
+ Lot of new weapons
+ Badass sountracks

- The plot story are meh, far below when compared to the first Alan Wake
- Only 3 level on the game and we have to replay it also for 3 times ??!! WTF thats just lazy from developer sides
- No flashlight upgrade
- Enemy AI are far too easy
- Short gameplay time, I finished the game in 7 hours with all collectibles and weapons unlocked. Comparing to 14 hours playtime I got from the first game.

I ONLY can recommend this game when its on heavy discount (bought it on 75% discount sale) just for the sake of closure ending (If you can called it true ending anyhow)

Got into Alan Wake due to it being related to control, and I liked this, even though its short, the weapons in here are awsome, I hope these will be seen in Alan Wake 2. I found the entire storyline of Alan Wake beyond interesting,m and not hard to follow, if one can figure out Evil Within's plotline, this series is easy.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a spin-off and continuation of the first Alan Wake game.

The story is ok, but compared to its predecessor a little bit lackluster. Due to it being more combat focused (more ammo and a wider variety of weapons), it somehow looses a lot of the atmosphere which made the first game really enjoyable.

The game is not bad, but different!

Every aspect of the gameplay is an improvement over Alan Wake. The shooting is more fun, plenty of ammo dumps, more guns, you can run for more than 3 seconds. The graphics are also crisper. But all the atmosphere has gone. And some people might not like the repetitive plot device. I enjoyed it. 7/10

Soo this game is basically action oriented Alan Wake, less horror & resources is more common

The control is wayy more fluid and fun than original alan wake

The story is nothing special, its there, but the usage of time loop was interesting.

If you like Alan Wake but with more gun blazing, then this game is for you

Just like the first game, Alan Wake's American Nightmare is a great game from start to finish. Atmosphere is haunting and fighting with Taken feels great. Graphics look nice. The story is well written, I liked the time loop concept. Gameplay is solid. My only problem with this game is that it is too short. You can finish it in one sitting. Other than that it is an amazing horror game.

Alan Wake is back in this short story from Arizona plains where he fights against the Darkness and its herald, evil Mr. Scratch (he is perfect!). Captured in his twisted reality you have to try your best to outsmart this insane fellow. There are three different locations, in each you have to save / protect a lady in distress and with their help you will be able to move on. Story is simple, but there is a fun twist to it. ;)

Gameplay wise it's still Alan Wake. You have your faithful flashlight and variety of weapons at your disposal to protect yourself against the old and new enemies. Fights were good, the bigger ones offered even a challenge. You will rarely run out of munition as there are stashes that replenish over time - I would love to have this in the main game, there you are always low on batteries and bullets. You also have a mini map which shows your goal and even those stashes and collectibles, which was great! Not only do these collectibles help to shape the story, they open better weapons in the challenges. After completing the main story you can try your survival skills in the Arcade levels, where you need to fight off the enemies till the dawn. After a few tries I was able to get even the hardest achievements on the Nightmare mode, so in the end it wasn't that hard. ;)

Even though this is a standalone game, I think you will enjoy it more if you have played the original game first as you will be familiar with the controls, enemies and the story so far. It was fun, easier than the main game, but I take it as a savory before the big anticipated sequel!! Yes, I am still hoping. ;)

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

Overview

Light outshines Darkness. This game revolved around the fierce battle against Light and Darkness. The Yin-Yang plot of Light and Darkness. You play as Alan Wake, the champion of Light, whose only goal is to end the plots of his evil and dark double who calls himself “Mr. Scratch”. The whole journey is potrayed as a stand-alone episode of a Twilight Zone-esque Television Show called “Night Springs”.

Storyline

The game has a very unique and interesting storyline. It’s not worth spoiling and I highly recommend playing the game to find out what happens. The spoiler free version of the storyline is as follows:

You take on the role of a renowned author and the chosen champion of Light, Alan Wake, who’s on a pursuit of tracking down and erasing the existence of his evil double who aims to eradicate Alan Wake and replace him, claiming all his properties from his identity to his wife while destroying the waves of darkness consumed monsters known as “The Taken” sent by Mr. Scratch. He faces a lot of challenges during this extermination pilgrimage. Will Alan Wake bring back light into the word, or be swallowed by Darkness? Play the game to find out!

In my opinion, despite being a horror game, it isn’t that scary. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad. I love the narrative aspect of the game and the nerve wrecking anxiety we feel when waiting for darkness consumed monsters to suddenly spawn out of nowhere who have the sole objective to end you.

Gameplay

The way this game works is pretty different from other third person shooters. The camera is not positionedexactly behind the character, but slighty to one side. Pressing Tab would move the camera’s position from left to right and vice versa, enabling you to set the camera’s position according to the situation.

The gun mechanics is very simple and on point. They do have a decent collection of weapons from a pistol, Flare gun and SMGs to Assault Rifles, shotguns and Nail Guns. Your main weapon is your torchlight as without removing the darkness out of your enemies, bullets will deal no damage to them. There are also throwables like a flash bang, flare etc that prove to be useful whenever you get cornered. You start with a basic pistol, and you can unlock weapons by collecting Manuscript pages and unlocking chests using those.

Movement in the game is pretty smooth. I love how your dodges go in Slo-Mo whenever you successfully manage to dodge an attack. There isn’t much movement apart from the basic walking, sprinting, dodging and jumping. I had no problems in this field of the game as everything was smooth and perfect.

There are different varients in the enemies you face. Some are normal humans who are consumed by darkness, some are very fast and will try to flank, some split into two weaker versions of itself whe exposed to light, there are huge ones that carry some kind of spinning saw blade and there are spiders too! There is a lot of varients in the Taken you face, apart from the ones I mentioned too. In the beginning, you face the weak ones, but as you progress, the enemies increase in power and number. The ones I hate the most are the splitting one and the one that is a black mist that can possess an object and throws it at you which usually deals a lot of damage. The only way you can regain health is by walking into the Street Light’s lighting radius.

According to me, the game can be re-played as it has a very good storyline and also has collectibles. But I am sure not everyone would agree with me as the main story is kind of repetitive by itself. (You will understand why when you play the game.)

The game has an arcade mode where you can test your survival skills against waves of The Taken and using the weapons you unlocked in the story mode. The arcade mode is extremely challenging as beating your own score would be harder in the span of 10 minutes. If you play this mode in Normal difficulty, you would face waves of enemies that progressively become tougher. If you play it in Nightmare difficulty, the waves would be endless.

Graphics

This game was released in 2012, so it’s really old. To be honest, the graphics are way ahead of its time. The game’s overall mood is dark as you are obviously fighting against the darkness. This setting hides the detailing, which proves to be an advantage to the game. One cannot really make out the exact details in the assets in the playable area. Hence, the game is visually appealing.

There is one thing in this game that blew my mind, most of the cut-scenes are not animated, but instead utilise real actors and shot the scene. It’s like watching a movie! It has been very well made and hats off to the devs for coming up with this idea. I had a hard time telling whether the cutscenes were detailed animations or real, but the climax of the game answered that question. I just loved this aspect of the game.

Pros

 • Immersive Gameplay with an interesting storyline filled with suspense and plot twists.
 • Graphics are pretty good and way ahead of its time.
 • Fighting is challenging and requires fast reflexes.
 • Game has a replayability factor due to the precense of Collectibles and the very interesting story line.
 • Narration is very well done. The overall audio/music used in the game is actually useful during combat as it notifies you when the enemies are spawning or if there are any enemies left.
 • Gunplay is unique as you aim using the torch on your other hand. Funnily enough, your torch is the most important “weapon” you possess.
 • Arcade mode is fun and has a high replayability factor.

Cons

 • The game is pretty short. I finished the game in around 3.5 hours.
 • The game has some bugs. Enemies literally disappeared in front of me sometimes. I am sure this was not intentional as I have neither shot at them nor was there a source of light nearby.

Tips to New player

Never use the Nail Gun. The bullet drop is high and the weapon itself is pretty weak. Find enough Manuscripts to unlock the UZI as that gun is the best in the starting. I finished the game with the UZI and Shotgun only. Always watch your back. Enemies will spawn or creep up behind you, so you need to watch your back. Don’t try to be a hero and try fighting the Taken in close range, you would most probably meet your demise. There are several ways to kill the Taken apart from wasting bullets, so find other ways to get rid of them like shooting explosive barrels etc. Conserve ammo.

Verdict

This was a unique experience I had. I really enjoyed the game that I finished it in under one day in 2 sittings. I really enjoyed the cut-scenes and the story. I highly recommend this game. Do not miss out on this must-play game!

This game is one of the best third-person shooter experiences I've ever had. I've played it before on Xbox, and the PC version looks (and feels) even better.
Sure, it's not as good as Alan Wake; don't expect to be playing Uncharted or Tomb Raider either.

The combat is pretty solid, the exploration is decent, the atmosphere is incredible (not even close to the OG's, however). The story is nothing to write home about, though...
But where this game truly shines is the Arcade Mode - it adds an incredible amount of replayability to a game that you would otherwise complete once or twice and uninstall.

8/10, not enough Sonic

P.S. Remedy, give us Alan Wake 2 please.

Improved gameplay, better visuals, and more weapon variety; but all at the risk of have a recycled map. Serisouly, this game makes improvements from the first game, but doesn't feel like it has much variety or anything of value to add, so it recycles locations to stretch run time and make it count for a separate game when in reality it feels like it should have been tacked on DLC. With that said I'd still recommend it. It has an interesting story, and some of the TV and radio stuff is funny or entertaining. Especially at the current sale price of $2 you'd be a fool not to grab it. It's about 4 hours of playtime and is a decent way to kill an afternoon.

This likely would fare better were it simply regular DLC for the main game.

I'm not entirely sure I understand the thought process behind making things like this standalone. Presumably to allow people to buy it who do not have or are not interested in the main game. But then, looking at a semi-niche product like this, those people aren't gonna buy this either.

So first and foremost, this is ostensibly DLC for the main game.
Gameplay tweaks:
 • There are more guns. And the gunplay is improved.
 • The minimap displays more information.
 • Ammo and batteries refill at stations.
 • New enemy types.
Not recommend if you have severe arachnophobia.
• The entire game, aside from the arcade mode, takes place on 3 open maps.
 • There are weapon chests that contain heavy weapons that you can only open after collecting a certain amount of manuscript pages. However, they are totally unnecessary. There is plenty of firepower elsewhere. Most of them open with just a few pages that you'll run into along the way anyways.

It's not super interesting that there are only 3 open maps that are not really worth exploring a great deal. This is exacerbated by the fact that the story, involving Mr. Scratch, puts Alan in a time loop and repeatedly has to come back to these places and perform the same tasks.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2271595823
The time loop only occurs 3 times and different events happen each time. The characters aid Alan in the more tedious tasks setup by the first time loop.
Just what is going on here?

You might be thinking to yourself, why on Earth hasn't Alan written himself out of these horrible stories where everyone is dying. After all, it's his fault. They're his stories. Well, Mr. Scratch is the main problem. What this character is could easily be argued depending on what you believe is going on in the universe. There is a canon. However, I believe that canon has an amount of ambiguity that needs explanation. —
Alan posits that he cannot alter the story in his favor. He says this because there are rules of drama that need to be followed. As in, what you imply has more significance than the actual words you use. Because there are things out there that will use your words against you. What I think is going on here is that what people infer from non-explicit text or otherwise is simply out of your control. Or rather, out of Alan's control in this context. But don't read into that. ;)

As LeVar Burton would say: “You don't have to take my word for it.”

THE GIST:
It's not a great game. It's not really even a good game. But it's FAR from being bad. It's only a few hours long and arcade mode theoretically lasts forever until you get bored with it. I think it's appropriately priced for what it is.

At first I was impressed by the improvements in the graphics and the gameplay compared to those of Alan Wake but then the game began to reuse its levels again and again.
What's fun in running through the entirety of each location 3 times to get the collectibles containing more of the story? Unlike the optional Nightmare difficulty in the original, these extra playthroughs are forced in American Nightmare.

Do yourself a favor and either avoid this game and catch up on the TV, radio and manuscript pieces online or get it and run straight to each of the objectives to experience about 3 hours of action.

I hate games that dont tell you an action will end a chapter, especially when there are collectables to be collecting. I had one page left to find in the first area and after I found that I was going to be able to upgrade a weapon but NOPE!

I guess the devs think this is adding in some kind replay value. It isn't. It's adding in no-more-play value.

The game isn't very good, but I was enjoying it for what it was, but this completely ruined the experience. Too bad.

A sequel to an amazing game. It drowned the original amazing and wonderfully dark premise under shooter mechanics, mob spam and overall, it felt like and was the same four chapters over and over again. The first effect I felt of this was that I stopped reading the pages, stopped caring at all about the story and stopped being invested at all in any of the characters. The repetition and difficulty in making progress utterly smothered my enthusiasm and ultimately, smothered any fun I was trying to have. It felt lazily written and created. Why a story about a loop in time? Why make it so that you had to get pages for upgrades? Why just throw mobs and mobs and mobs at every turn? I gave up. I stopped believing there was any end to it all. I found myself counting the seconds to being utterly overrun by endless mob spam and returned to whatever save point I had shambled over to. Final Score: 3/10. They introduced a small handful of new characters that never developed and never felt like anything other than talking cardboard. It ground my love of the series into fine paste.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare is a short story, but deep within its manuscripts new truths are revealed that widen the universe that was originally created. With the introduction of new characters, I found that the plot of being stuck in a time loop actually helped me get to know them more as they attempted to come to grips with what was happening. The performance of Mr. Scratch through the television and cutscenes really contributed to making this a memorable presentation. While the gameplay can be hindered by inconsistent mouse sensitivity that is likely related to small changes in framerates, I was able to adjust my settings to keep the feeling of aiming balanced. There are new enemies that take on interesting forms, as well as a greater variety of weapons that are very refreshing. Beyond the story, the arcade mode is a solid addition where the real challenge begins. This may not be the full sequel that fans are waiting for, but it is an adventure that sets up a lot for what ultimately could come. If you are just as excited about that as I am, then remember to stay in the light. Game on.

It's Alan Wake with improved graphics, increased stamina, and endless combat. What's not to love? The story is MIA, the combat is a spaghetti shooter without ammo management, and the three areas that you experience on a repeating loop feel small after initial visits. American Nightmare is a sketch of Alan Wake reduced down to an arcade facsimile. It's best avoided. Replay the original Alan Wake instead.

This was a first time playthrough with America Nightmare and played directly after finishing Alan Wake. My initial reaction was “WOW what an improvement from the 2010 port!” The game feels like it was made for PC with crisp controls, optimized visuals and enhanced gunplay. The live action cutscenes do not look fuzzy (how a console to PC port normally looks). I like how it feels like a spinoff or a dream and the story is not nearly as complicated as the first game. Also the length is much shorter and can probably finished in under 3 hours.

American Nightmare has moved the environment from a forest area to the middle of the desert. The game has three major areas to explore, A Hotel / Rest stop, an Observatory and a drive-in movie theater all feel wildly more open and spacious rather than the confined pathway of the first story. This makes the gameplay much more action oriented rather than horror and Alan will even wield some automatic weapons and an automatic nail gun. So, there is many more enemies to dispatch and much more ammo needed. There’s never a dull moment in this game.

The main problem with American Nightmare is when finish the story, you realize this was minimum effort by Remedy Entertainment. Technical improvements aside, players are forced to revisit and replay the three areas, A Hotel / Rest stop, an Observatory and a drive-in movie theater, a total of three times each, because Alan Wake hasn’t completed the signal to get the “whole story”. And Alan needs to “whole story” to defeat his doppelganger boss dude in the final area. And each time you reach the final area, the player literally start from the beginning of the game and traverse through the same areas, talking to the same characters, playing a series of fetch quests. This makes the same super repetitive and frustrating. Sure, a new enemy is introduced in each of the three timelines, and if you have been paying attention and collecting the manuscripts, you can unlock new weapons as you play, but it’s not enough to hold interest. A 3-hour game is really 1 hour played three times.

Even after this major criticism, I still find the overall experience much better than the first game. The story is self-aware. It’s a quick romp. The number of cut scenes in between gameplay is limited (unlike it’s predecessor). It’s technically competent and can be finished in 2 play sessions. It does leave players wondering if we will ever see a true sequel to Alan Wake with modernized gameplay techniques.

A very good spin-off/sequel to first one. As the devs said themselves, this game is like a Quentin Tarantino movie where as the first one was a Stephen King novel. The game I think brings an apt closure to Alan's fight with the darkness and taken. Hopefully he's at peace now.

Fun little spin-off, not worth too much, wouldn't buy it at full price. But it's a fun little time killer and more time with Alan Wake.

American Nightmare is pretty good. You can clearly tell that they didn't have much time or money to develop something better, but with what's here they did a great job. This DLC only takes roughly 4 hours to get through, but it does it in quite a repetitive and cheap way. You will replay through the same 3 areas 3 times over to beat this. However every time you loop you thankfully aren't forced to carry out the same exact objectives. The NPC characters remember and will set things up so you don't have to do things over again. It keeps this from being a complete chore. Now with this you get a whole slew of new weapons to play with. New pistols, rifles and shotguns are yours to play around with. It's nice having an option between different weapons instead of just using the same revolver, rifle and 2 shotguns. There are new enemies that I would say are neat additions. They have unique abilities that challenge how you would normally deal with the Taken and I quite like that. This does include an arcade mode, but I have yet to give it a try. I would say this DLC is worth it's asking price of $9. The campaign is definitely not something I will be replaying anytime soon unlike the base game. However the arcade mode will be something nice to pick up, when I just want to kill some Taken.

I just don't like it. It's like the first, enemies are stupid, and the cryptic attempt at story telling is annoying.

Maybe you will like it, there's nothing wrong with the game play, graphics, or music. It's just that none of it works for me.

First half is interesting and a welcome change of scenery, but the repetitive structure makes it a chore to reach the end.

The story of the game is not as good as the original Alan Wake, but it has the same atmosphere.
Personally like to finish the original Alan Wake's version several times, but once was enough for this one!

Game devs: Yo Dawg! We have lack of fantasy, we made only 1 hour of story line.
Dawg: Just loop entire story three times, so that people play same shit few times in a row, and you're done!
