Positiv: Grafik, Soundkulisse, Design, Effekte, Gameplay

Michael Bay's idea of Alien brought to life. If it's not exploding, it's thinking about exploding, or has already exploded, and is trying to explode again. Everything explodes in this game. The machinery explodes, the computers explode, the walls explode, the floor explodes, the monsters explode, hell, even space explodes at times.

8/10, not enough explosions -Michael Bay

Serious, now, the game is classic Top-down shooter, Very Alien inspired, and short and sweet. The gunplay is fun enough, but the overall game is held back by lacking weapon variety and dragging task work that is blatant padding to the thickest degree.

For guns, you have assault rifle, pistol, which is basically assault rifle but weaker with infinite ammo, flamethrower, which is basically assault rifle but short range and wider spread, and laser gun, which is just assail rifle but with ricocheting bullets.

The only outlier weapons are the shotgun and 'ionspike (basically railgun), which operate as the high damage single shots, but that's about it.

And as for exploration, go here, interact with thing, go there, interact with thing, go back to first thing, interact with it again, go to another thing, interact with it, now go to three more places and interact with things A, B, and C to open door to get to things X, Y, and Z. That's literally the whole game structure, going through corridors to get to computer consoles to open doors while shooting enemies along the way.

But, overall, it's a solid, if grey and repetitive and basic shooter. Get it at a discount though, 50% at least, since the game is also incredibly short despite it's padding.

--Score: 58/100 Fun in short bursts, kinda mindless. Get it on sale (and its two sequels if you like it).
--Graphics: 16/20 Better than I expected. Lots of transparencies, nice touches like the planet you're orbiting visible at the edge of the ship, and your flashlight shining through windows to the outside. Nice starfields. Generic aliens so far, but the MC looks good. You will be surprised by it, considering its age and obscurity.
--Story: (9/20) I dunno, not far enough yet but it seems predictable and bland (although the character biographies are much more extensive than most games). The logs (if you bother to read them) are interesting and have character.
--Difficulty: (11/20) Needs a little balancing, I think. The game is moderate to high difficulty, depending on settings. It's not souls-like difficult, more resident evil unavoidable damage-ish.
--Game play: (11/20) Objectives are varied and organic. The battles are fun but repetitive. Twin-stick, ammo scarce (depending on setting), little bit of rpg equipment upgrading, fast enemies in packs (so far). good equipment variety that you will actually need because of ammo limitations. Lots of environmental things like explosions, fires, malfunctioning suppressor gas.
--Multiplayer: (11/20) Coop works fine but feels off somehow (I can't explain it). It feels like Halo coop if Halo were a top down twin stick shooter.

Alien Breed: Impact could have been a solid shooter but there are some flaws that make the game much less fun than it could be.

- too much backtracking and it is often unclear where to go mixed with a snail's pace movement speed
- menu has annoying flashing effects
- constant loud explosions with screen-shaking effects

This game, now about 10 years old of the time of this review, still holds up. Good 3D engine (UnReal), good background ambient audio and voice over, and nice level design that adds to the overall tense atmosphere of being aboard a failing ship called the Leopold. It slowly introduces the new alien types and along with hidden logs throughout the levels. You can pick up credits to upgrade gear, purchase items, or save your game at accompanying terminals. Good ARPG with an rotating isometric view which takes a little to get use to but is worth it. Recommended with or without a friend to play with.

★★☆☆☆ Okay!

Action

This game could have been very decent, but it suffers from a mountain of gameplay issues that all add up to a frustrating experience. Moving freely is inhibiting, as you easily get caught on corners of objects that are often in the dark, not to mention that your movement speed can be charitably described as trundling at best. You can sprint, but you have to hold down a button, and your limit (which isn't represented by any sort of stamina bar) is far too short.

The camera issues are no better, as every time your mouse touches the edge of the screen your perspective rotates, making navigating and gunplay supremely dissatisfying. You're zoomed in too far on your character, which means you can't see what's going on around you, even in the same room. And even if the mechanics of battle worked well, shooting the aliens gives little feedback to the player. Bullets travel over the aliens heads until they seemingly die randomly of heart attacks.

All in all, this game could have been much better, but pretty much every programming decision that went into creating it ended up failing!

Not sure why this game gets the hate it does. I certainly didn't play this for the 15+ hours it shows on Steam but probably at least half that. The controls work well on controller, it's honestly a rather great control scheme for controllers and it makes sense, this is a TWIN STICK SHOOTER. Not a M+KB shooter. I play FPS and TPS games with a mouser and keyboard but I play anything like this with a controller. People also complaining that the game is difficult or the enemies are cheap. I played on the hardest difficulty and it was a BREEZE, I didn't die a single time. Make better use of your items and learn to scavenge if you're having a hard time.

Game looks great with a couple of tweaks. Remove the FPS cap and turn off motion blur in the config files and super sample it. Sure it's from 2010 and it's top down shooter that was never meant to look like a AAA release but it actually looks really good when maxed out with super sampling enabled, blur and FPS cap turned off.

The game can be a little clunky, you'll get stuck on objects here and there but it didn't happen much and there was only one time I got stuck for longer than a couple seconds.

The only bad things I can say about this game are:

No story co-op, massive missed opportunity. The assault mode is cool but I would have preferred if story was co-op instead.

There should have been options in-game for removing the awful and down right sickening motion blur and to uncap the FPS but AT LEAST being UE3 it was possible to remove via the config files.

And thirdly, the upgrade system is stupid. You can only choose ONE upgrade and they don't explain this to you. I wasted so many credits thinking I could have all the upgrades unlocked on all weapons. And it's only worth having the damage upgrade on every weapon as ammo can be scarce if you don't buy it from the checkpoint vendors where as double damage means double ammo essentially.

No ragdolls kinda annoys me. I hate static death animations with a passion.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and was looking for something to scratch that Shadowgrounds itch, I've yet to play the other two, they've just been sitting in my library for literally 10 years and I figured it was time to give them a try. I'm going to assume they're just more of the same and that's fine since this game is relatively short.

Pretty solid Alien shooter game. Controls are bit odd due how you turn camera and aim, but it's easy to learn and works well enough with two first difficulties. Didn't play this one on elite so can't say for sure about that, but in second game it wasn't too good for it.

Levels and atmosphere were pretty solid in first game and found it enjoyable experience with pair of boss fights and good enough enemy variety. Story was interesting and cartoon strip style cutscenes were nice to watch. Story starts Leopold (their ship) surfing in space on a mission while Mia (synth) comes to Conrad rooms and boom bang ding ow, we got a contact with ghost shop filled with Aliens, so time to pick trusty side arm and give em hell.

Alien Breed has save stations along with autosaves based on reaching certain points in level. This works well enough so won't lose much progress in case if happen to overrun by enemy hordes which can spawn all around the main protagonist Conrad while he goes around fixing things and solving issues to get their ship out of ghost ship and potentially destroying alien hordes inside ghost ship and ship along with them.

Good variety of weapons from assault rifles and shot cannon (shotgun?) to flamethrower and hyper blaster (minigun), Conrad has good ways to wreak havok on them alien forces. Though explosives tend to be finicky and can cause more of selfharm than on enemies.

Solid around 10 hours of alien blasting with basic enough story with likable presentation along with neat enough level design and atmosphere.

It's not necessarily a bad game, it's just really aged poorly in terms of gameplay and mechanics. As top-down corridor 3d scifi shooters go, there are better options, like Shadowgrounds and Alien Swarm.

This game is nowadays pretty clunky. Enemies spawn behind you, that dumb mechanic that games in the early 2000s loved to do. Scavenging is a drag because you need to stand your character just in the right spot, and then hold down the interact key.

The gameplay loop is tedious: You need to activate a console / acquire a key to unlock something. Over and over. Corridors are too samey and the minimap is no help.

Story is presented in tiny comic-book segments, with pretty nice art and voice acting.

Controls are probably the worst aspect of the game. I highly recommend you use the alternate controls using this guide https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=663505110

All in all I did play it for several hours, but realised in the end that it was a bit of a bore. I think I'll install Shadowgrounds instead.

If it's at 2.5$, it may be worth getting.

This isn't a bad game, per se, but it's just kind of... there. I've tried to get into this game twice, and both times I've come away disappointed.

It has solid graphics and pretty good controls, but it doesn't help the repetitive aspects of this game. The first mission is shutting down a reactor, and despite you being the chief(?) engineer and needing to avoid a core overload, you can't do it without visiting like 4 other rooms, getting other peoples' keycards, and apparently one door only opens if you have a flashlight. The design of this ship is so poor that it deserves to explode.

Meanwhile, most of it seems to be a top-down walking simulator, with enemies occasionally popping up, leading from the engine room to somewhere else back to the engine room back to somewhere else back to the engine room and back to somewhere else, etc.

The point of the beginning of a game is that it should be able to grab your attention, introduce you to the plot, and do something exciting enough to keep you playing. Halo: CE has you dodging fire as you run towards the bridge, getting instructions, and then fighting off boarders on your way back down, with small diversions like crawling through access tunnels or joining up with allies to keep it fresh. My Friend Pedro has you immediately fighting for your freedom through an inner city gang. Skryim has you almost beheaded, flee from a dragon, and then fight your way through a mini-dungeon of enemy soldiers, giant spiders, and a bear. This game has you literally spend about 1 hour shutting down a single reactor, with virtually no plot, dialogue, or anything else to help flesh out the initial comic-strip-like plot dump in the first minute.

Truth to be told, I downloaded this almost a year or two back and tried. However, I stopped playing immediately because of the controls. I was using a Keyboard/mouse combination and had a terrible experience. I was never used to playing with a controller and it seemed this was suitable only for controllers.

However, a week back I tried googling about the issue and presto! found a way to fix and the experience was way much better. I liked the story line and it was pretty short. The only boss fight in the game was at the final point. The ending was a cliffhanger though.

I couldn't get a lot of upgrades but had a ton of ammo. You really wouldn't run out it in normal play. I played it solo btw and hadn't tried co-op mode. The gameplay was smooth and the visuals are good enough. Do remember this game out way back. It would have been good to have the light banter between Conrad and Mia voalized in the game too rather than just the cutscenes alone. Oh, and I loved the comic panel type cutscene playing out. You don't really need video to narrate a story.

I'd say this is definitely playable at least once.

All of this applies to the whole trilogy, I've been testing the others too:

TL;DR It's good enough if you get it cheap, fix the controls, and are out of good twinsticks.

The screen in this game is like my knees near Alicia Vikander - it won't fucking stop shaking.

Whoever designed the menu is an a$$hole, it shakes and flickers so hard I felt like it would leave the screen and not come back. But all it did was give me a literal panic attack.

The cutscenes are like LOTR endings - there are way too many of them, mostly for things we didn't need to see, and after you get the point they just KEEP GOING. But unlike LOTR endings, they're unskippable.

You move the camera with Q & E in 45° increments or by scrolling on the edge of the screen. If I had 3 wishes, one of them would be that whoever made this decision gets the wheels of every car they ever own turned into oblongs.

There's an option in the menu for alternate mouse controls, which just turns off the mouse. Clearly this game is some kind of modern art experiment that's going over my head.

I found a fix in the forums that makes it control like Shadowgrounds, by editing a config file, but then the camera is super floaty and sprinting ignores the mouse.

So they actually knew what controls the game was supposed to have, made them, hid them, and made them slightly shit just in case you find them. I'm speechless.

The shooting is fine, but weapon variety is a joke.

Alt+F4 doesn't work, how do you fuck that up? Did the art director with a shaking fetish shake the engine designer during programming?

If anything else of note comes up I'll mention it below.

Oh and the menu has load times, which is just brilliant.

Killing bugs in a spaceship is total bliss. Good gun options and a nice save system, with a console never being too far away to save and or buy more ammo or medkits. It tells the story through a comic style system with voice actors. It can also get challenging if you up the difficulty or you can just chill and take it easy. Overall in my opinion its even better than Destiny 2. (and it seems more like a finished product lol)

The gameplay, story, and sound design are all surprisingly well done despite a couple of minor hiccups.

The top-down, isometric perspective is actually a really neat perspective on the sci-fi horror genre, but arguably by the end of the game it does turn into a generic space shooter. The game does a great job of building in a crescendo with tense atmospheres before deflating near the end; a deliberate measure by the developers to promote Alien Breed 2: Assault. While I enjoyed what I was experiencing, it did come off as a cash grab in many ways. I felt the game should have had its own ending while leaving a sequel open to possibility, not having the game literally feel like it went unfinished intentionally for the sake of pumping out a sequel.

The camera takes a little getting used to but by the end of the first level I found it second nature. Everything else falls into the tried and testing shooter tropes (find health packs, ammo, etc.).

In my opinion, the weakest part of the game came from its lackluster voice acting. I felt like what we were fed was an effort to make Conrad sound like a bad ass but it just comes off as forced. Don't even get me started on Mia.

Despite coming out in 2010, the graphics still hold up fairly well a decade later. The aliens look great as do the environments, when you can see them in between constant camera shaking explosions. There are also a surprising variety of both to keep things fresh as the game progresses.

All in all, Alien Breed: Impact is a fun ode to the sci-fi genre as a whole and its influences are obvious. It is a love letter to the genre and a great introduction to the Alien Breed franchise for new fans.

So, Alien Breed Impact. How would I describe it... It's kinda like Aliens meets Dead Space 1 meets Rambo meets a twin stick shooter. It's a great game and definitely worth the price on sale. I paid under $3 for the entire trilogy of games so honestly, in terms of value it's a 10/10. However, it does have some downsides to it that make the game a chore to complete.

The game itself is about 5-6 hours long, but my 10 hour played time is because I left the game running while I went and did other stuff.

Pros:
-The shotgun is the most OP weapon in the game! Why is this a pro? The shotgun should be the most OP weapon in EVERY game!
-Graphics are amazing for the time and the art style still holds up strongly today.
-You can hold more than 2 weapons, which is awesome.
-Some of the voice overs are horrible, but I love them because they're hilarious.
-The soundtrack and sound effects are pretty decent overall.
-While the game isn't long, it's a decent enough length.

Cons
-The mission structure is terribly boring. Basically, every mission has you go to computer stations to activate something, but EVERY SINGLE TIME you do that something else goes wrong, so you have to go turn on a fire suppression system or reboot a system or re-initiate 4 cores or... it's all the same, every. damn. time. and it gets so boring and frustrating by the end.
-There is an upgrade system for weapons, but it is so damn stupid. The way it works is that every gun has the same 3 upgrades (power, reload time, rate of fire). Great, right? WRONG! Upgrades are very expensive in the game, but here's the stupid part. Let's say you upgrade the shotgun to have faster reload and then upgrade it to get more damage. You'd think they'd stack, right? NOPE! You lose the faster reload speed and ONLY get the increased damage, but you know the worst part? You can't just switch back and forth now. YOU NEED TO REPURCHASE THE RELOAD UPGRADE AGAIN IF YOU WANT IT AGAIN! WTF?? So be VERY careful which upgrade you get, because it'll cost you way too much to undo your mistake if you don't like it.
-Did I mention how stupid the weapon upgrade system is?? It's so bad it deserves 2 cons!
-Initially the game introduces enemy types at a steady pace, but then about halfway through the game you've seen them all and they never introduce another one.
-There's only 1 boss fight in the entire game and it's at the very end.
-The game ends on a cliffhanger, so if you want to see the entire story through you need to buy the other 2 games.
-The grenades are absolutely worthless. I'd say they only actually did what they're supposed to do 20% of the time. The rest of the time they don't do anything to enemies even if the frag goes off right beside them.

Honestly, I'm sure there are more cons but I'm tired of writing about this game. As it is, and for the price, it's very fun with a lot of flaws. But if you know about the flaws ahead of time you can enjoy the game more than I did.

PROS
1, Graphic: quite nice.
2. Difficulty: the pace is very slow, so you can take your time.

CONS
1. Control: not intuitive and a bit confusing. You don't know if you're aiming your gun to those aliens or just empty space. I'm sure my hit rate on this game is less than 30%.
2. Map: unavailable on in-game scree. You have to enter your character menu, then adjust the map only to figure out where you should move. No shortcut either.
3. View: it's a third person perspective game, top-view. Supposed to be fine IF: the system just lock the camera angle, allowing players to rotate is really unnecessary. Moreover when you can't even see where you are and where you're heading on the map. When the camera angle is locked, players can just focus on the game, not on adjusting the view.
4. Gameplay: I expected some actions on this game. But it turns out, it's just a puzzle game with some aspects of explosion and uninteresting aliens coming at you without doing any major damage. Sometimes.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
1. Lock the camera angle. Seriously. We don't need to be busier than shooting those aliens while finding a way out of the destroyed ship.

OR

Make the camera follow the character. Do not make the round wheel square. Please.

2. Show the map on the gameplay screen instead of just clueless radar. I need to see the walls and where the doors are WHILE MOVING. Not coming back and forth only to see the map only to find out that I'm already lost somewhere on the ship's corridors.

3. MORE ACTIONS. I don't feel the thrill while shooting those aliens. Currently it feels more like... nevermind.

I'm enjoying this game in single player. For some reason I thought this series had a cooperative mode (which I define as two or more players sitting around the same computer and screen) like Trine or Badlands. But it doesn't :(. If you wouldn't purchase the game without co-op as I define it you may feel cheated (as I did).

BUT as I said I'm enjoying single player. My concern is that it will get repetitive. Because it was cheap when I bought it I'm happy enough.

Works fine in Proton, at least in Single player.

You're in a spaceship, killing aliens... for me that's enough to like it.

I loved Alien Swarm, this game reminds me that one with the top view camera type of game.

Try it. :)

Bad optimization and really bad gameplay while playing in coop mode. Not worth wasting time if you are looking for a twin-stick shooter to play with a friend. Try Helldivers instead.

Not a bad game but way too much filler.

Playing the first story mode mission, it felt like it dragged on way longer than it should IMO. Not a game where you can pick up and run a few missions quickly.

The ships overall 'design' is hilariously inefficient with important panels being incredibly far away from where they should be, wasting a lot of travel time for 'filler' reasons. It's alright sometimes but they bored me out of the game right on the first mission because it just... wouldn't... end. Not a good sign - that just leads me to not bother with the rest of the game unless I get really really bored and run out of things to play.

However, my steam backlog pretty much ensures that won't happen. So off the drive it goes.

To it's credit: it was somewhat fun though until it got to that point. Grab it on a dollar sale if you're interested but would def not pay full price.

It's ok, fairly polished considered it's from 2010 but I find a few things really offputting, namely the linearity and generic feeling of it all and the camera changing rotation every so often that makes it really annoying.

Also it feels like it's abusing the minimap way too much, there's no attention to level design to lead you through spaces and to objectives, you could probably play more than half the time by just looking at the minimap

Probably still a good title if you're into the genre

You're an engineer. With a gun. Chatting with a chick. Who's a cyborg. On a spaceship. Shooting aliens.

great feeling of a spooky spacecraft on the brink of destruction/1o
