I played the original just about 20 years ago and instantly fell in love with the story, the puzzles, the art and the characters.
I was abit confused when I first started playing as I didn't recognize the beginning of the story, the original started with George in the cafe, so the added materiel was a very plesant surprise for me..
I can't wait to jump in to the second game and the fifth one, as those 3 are my personal favourites in the series..
Nostalgia value and it's been long enough that I don't quite remember all the solutions to the puzzles so it's well worth a revisit.

Full disclosure: I have not played the original version of the game. This was my first time playing it, with no expectations outside of good Steam reviews. I completed 75% of the game but couldn't go on anymore.

The game starts with Nico (dark haired girl photojournalist) and I LOVED playing her. She was interesting, cynical, and sharp. Then the game switches to George Stobbart and he turns out to be the main character. Nico just sits in her apartment the rest of the game, in wide eyed wonder as he brings her new evidence. George is your typical bland, blonde American. He's kind of unassuming, people let him get away with things, and he makes dad jokes.

The puzzles are kind of meh. They are few and far between, and not very difficult. The point and click aspect of Broken Sword is pretty typical. There are some objects that have no reasonable explanation, but George just shrugs it away.

This game was made in the mid-90s so there are some icky racism/outdated jokes when George goes to Syria. It's not super awful but it hasn't aged well.

Apparently a lot of the story was cut out for the Director's Cut, which is a shame. The game jumps all over. I felt like the map didn't flow very well, for progressing the story, with lots of backtracking, and options left open that should've been closed (fo rlack of available objects/convo options). The story was interesting, dealing with the Templars and Illuminati type conspiracy theories. But it drags on because of George's blandness, the lack of good puzzles, and repetitive scenery.

I'd recommend Grim Fandango or Ben There, Dan That for some more quirky and fast paced point and clicking.

Great plot, characters, okay puzzles, interesting cinematic outlook on this classical point & click adventure. It elegantly navigates between the comical and the serious traditions in its approach, telling a serious conspiracy story with lots of humour and immaculate comical character design. One of the best elements here is without a doubt the dialogue system: It's fun to exhaust all and any dialogue options, even the seemingly absurd, as the resulting dialogue is always witty, sometimes hilarious. Particularly the German voices are without a doubt best in class.

Director's Cut:
Scaling up is quite okay for a windowed playthrough. Either my memory of first playing Broken Sword is faulty, or the director's cut has some additional minigame puzzles, of varying quality, but the new Nico scenes are a welcome addition to shed light on her side of the story. The new puzzle puzzles are generally fine, even though the game now also includes the worst ever chess puzzle - it isn't even about chess, it's just using chess pieces for a needlessly stupid memory / trial and error game with wonky controls.

Highly recommended for a trip down memory lane - or as a first adventure for anyone who enjoyed reading Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum or anything by his American cousin, Duane Henderson Brown.

Don't remember how many time I've played this, the game is that good. If you buy it through here, you get both the original and director's cut. Forget the director's cut, the original is much better. They might add stuff to the director's cut but they also take out a lot.

Found this series as a recommendation because I enjoyed the Monkey Island series and the old school point and click games.
The game was fun and I enjoyed the artwork, story line and the voice acting. I will be playing the other games in this series.

Would definitely recommend to anyone that likes the genre

This is how an adventure game should be made.

You enter the game as George Stobbart, who is happily taking an autumn vacation in Paris, France. While enjoying the morning outside a small unassuming bistro, George is witness (and victim) of a violent bomb attack that leaves quite a few shaken and one man dead. By trying to gather a little more information on the explosive start to his day, the clues take George deeper and deeper into a thick and ancient mystery. This simple explosion will send George gallivanting through many countries in pursuit of a mystery hidden behind centuries of conspiracy.

Broken Sword: The Shadows of the Templars is a third-person cartoon style game. This may put some of you photorealisim aficionados off, but don't let it fool you. This game is definitely not for young kids. The deep and mysterious plot is designed to be thought provoking and highly entertaining at the same time. Many games utilizing this style of animation have been comedic romps, but Broken Sword is a serious game that contains plenty of intrigue and bundles of historical references. There are only enough jokes to add comic relief, and they are very witty.

As said before, this is a cartoon style game. The animation is extremely colorful and well executed. Three cheers for Broken Sword's art team, for they have taken this style of animation and really made an elegant, mature game with it. The screens are detailed and inviting. The voice-over acting is also of supreme quality, and it seems like this game never runs out of delightful dialogue.

The puzzle design is perfectly integrated into the environment and gaming world. Most of the puzzles are inventory based, but most of the definitely make sense, and makes you think.

The score is also ambitious and beautiful. It adds a very cinematic feel to the whole experience.

This is a true masterpiece and adventure gaming at its absolute finest. No adventurer should let this one pass by. If you haven't experienced Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars, drop whatever it is you are playing, and immediately push this one to the top of your list!

How can an American's vacation in Paris go wrong? especially when all he planned on doing is visiting the Eiffel tower, buying a small figurine of it, and stopping at the first cafe he spots that have an attractive waitress working in it??
well, not if the whole cafe gets blown up and he miraculously survives the explosive just to find out that he always wanted to play detective... and here is his chance!

a wannabe detective and a Journalist meet one another by pure luck or a twist of fate not knowing what they are dealing with whatsoever or that they are going to look behind the curtains which no one is supposed to look behind. and one could argue that it's the best part of the game, how things evolve from nothing to a multi-layers complex narrative that starts with a clown's red nose and ends in the Syrian desert or at the end of the world, West.
There are historical facts and references, religious ones also, events that happened in the past in different spots of the world, many of which were real but nevertheless, I tend to think that there is not much point in talking about the story without you exploring it for yourself.
You met Nico (the french journalist) after you survived a deadly bombing and start working with her on finding out who would want to kill you, but little did you, Nico, or I know that it's more than that, way more than we could imagine and that the game is afoot!

The game-play is just like any point and click game but I would like to compliment the puzzles in this game, they are always logical and carry the theme of real-life events/things you would/might do which I found quite nice and helps solving the puzzles and besides that, the characters themselves interact nicely and give slight hints on what's need to be done without spoiling it completely... which takes me to my next point, characters:

First of all, Nico and George, the only two playable characters. those two and every person you talk to in the game feel like they are ordinary people that you might meet on the streets or at your workplace, they talk/reply and interact naturally and I think this is the greatest selling point of this game, it's writing that made everything enjoyable and genuine and natural.

The writing is great, its humorous, witty, and entertaining, pretty much always. whether its the main characters or regular NPCs or heck, even characters that have only a few lines in the entire game, you get that french accent mixed with our American Georgy or perhaps, some Arabic banter? or from somewhere else... such quality work and dedication I admire greatly which takes us to my final point. animations and attention to details:

Given how old it is and how simple it is being just a point and a click game, there is a beautiful approach towards animations and how the characters move and interact with items which I have noticed throughout my playtime and I was surprised by it and the small cut-scenes, fully animated ones (Yes, a point and click game has all that and more). what I was also surprised by is the amount of playtime this game has to offer, the amount of content, game-play, places to visit, and countries and characters, all of which have their own identity and way of acting/talking and furthermore, each country you visit has its own theme of dialects, accents, and atmosphere that shows its people and in how it looks and feels which was really impressive.

I enjoyed this game greatly, it starts very slow and when you finish the game and look back at where and how you started, it almost looks like a completely different game, I enjoyed exhausting all dialogues and clicking everywhere possible :)

Broken Sword: The Shadow Of The Templars is a true classic point & click adventure game.

The game was created over 20 years ago, so graphically it may not be appealing to others looking for a visually modern game.

The puzzles are not too hard or too easy but are very well implemented within the game, complementing the story writing, rather than taking away from it or making the advancing too tedious. And if you are here, then you are most certainly looking for a great story and everything else is just a bonus :)

The hint system is in the form of a diary - it won't give you much, but rather help you better think how to advance through the next puzzle.

The humour, the character development, and the puzzles are wrapped in an amazing murder mystery, involving the ancient order of the templars.

For new to the classic genre or the ones who already love it - this one is a great example of excellent story writing.

I just started playing Broken Sword for the first time last week, and I've already played it for around 5 hours now and there's still so much to do! It is beyond fun, and I'm having the best time.

I love classic, retro games and this ticks all the right boxes for me. It's funny, with lovable characters, and has a fantastic mixture of easy and difficult puzzles.

I've just started a playthrough on my youtube channel if you'd like to check it out!

WARNING: The game is awesome but try to play the original (which you can get as a free DLC of the Director's Cut)

A classic and epic point and click adventure around the Knights Templar theme. It has really high production value, with some good 10 hours or so of great puzzles, narrative and beautiful visual art. I felt really really engaged and immersed on its story, and almost had no problem advancing through it besides just a particular bunch of infamous puzzles.

The Director's Cut edition I think is... kinda ok, but in the end maybe degrades the experience as a whole. I played both versions side to side (advancing first on the original, and then replaying in the new version). The graphics for the new content playing as Nicole look good for themselves, but feel kind of out of place comparing to the original parts. The original parts looks UGLY. I just don't know what they did, but there are lots of graphical glitches, and the cinematics (which were excellent) look subparly encoded. They removed LOTS of interactions and dialogue, which I think in the original gave life to the world and personality to its character. They added a bunch of first person (single screen) puzzles, but most of them feel really out of place, badly designed, artificial, or all at the same time.

In short, if you really like adventure games, play the original. If you are really enthusiast about adventure games or this game in particular, play also the Director's Cut. If you are not used to this kind of games, and don't have much time to play, play the Director's Cut version.

8/10 I played the original release back in '96 and for this release they not only updated the graphics but they re-wrote, coded, and voice acted a completely new intro.

There is is a in-game help system which was not in the original game, not sure where I stand on that but my kids find it useful, and I've wound up having to use it as well. The other big change from the original version is the cursor will change when you hover over an item that has something to do with the problem/puzzle you are on.

The puzzles in the game will make you think, and more often than not have you use the hint system which is clever in design by spoon feeding hints until finally it tells you what to do. I always feel like a dummy after the checking the 1st hint and realizing I was already on the right track but doing the task in the wrong, but logically correct order.

I have played a fraction of the game and have not even started to get into the meat of the story with 5 hours. That said, the price is reasonable for the length of game play and if you like story/adventure games or have played later entries in the series and want to see where it all began then get the game. It also comes with the original 96 title as well which is unforgiving it is play style.

I have read that some people (I did as well) have issues with it launching from WIn10 for the first time, There is a simple fix for that if you check the forums. Once that is done the game runs fine. I agree that it shouldn't be there but...I am not going to leave a negative review for the only issue the game has.

True classic, aged like good wine

A true classic, the game which started this amazing series.

If you never played this then don't be afraid of its age. The graphics are hand drawn and still look pretty damn good even today after all these years and gameplay? Gameplay wasn't affected by its age.
The story, the pacing, the ATMOSPHERE is something exceptional. You'll be sucked into the game from the very first scene. Just about everything in this game is a work of art, it's a masterpiece.

A bunch of beautifully drawn locations to explore and people to talk to. The dialogues never get boring, it's a real pleasure to listen to them. And the voice acting is excellent. It's never enough hearing Gergie and Nico speaking.
There are funny moments, sad moments, dangerous moments, just everything you'd want. And it's served just in right doses. You won't get bored playing this game.

Some puzzles might be challenging, but they're logical most of the time and you just need to try everything to solve them. Collect every item, inspect every corner you can, speak to everyone you can and you'll be good.

This an enhanced version with some new art, but in my opinion it wasn't needed and it feels out of place. The new art feels worse somehow.
Just add cards and achievements for this game to breath a second life into it and make some buck.

As i mentioned graphically the game looks really good. There has been so much works put into this game, i wish someone would start making game like this again. I know i know, these games are short and have no replayability value are pretty niche and developers should probably make them out of passion rather than hoping to become millionaires. The areas feel so nice. The animations are hand drawn and look better than modern point&click games. The only downside is that the whole game is kind of low res, but you can't really blame anyone for that. A game of this age? Look at other games released in the same year, they're just as ugly as me without clothes.

Another great thing about this classic game is sound design. The music is outstanding. Everytime you hear it you feel completely immersed. And you what the best part is? You hear right when you start the game and you feel at home, your body just fills with that feeling i can't explain.

If you're a fan of point&click games and still for some unknown unexplainable weird strange reason missed this game, this is a mistake of your life. This is simply a masterpiece and a must have for every fan of the genre.

Pros
  • Beautiful hand drawn graphics and aimations
  • Outstanding sound design
  • Good variety of puzzles
  • Beatiful locations
  • Great story

Cons
  • I'm not sure if enhancements were needed

Very fun point and click adventure, with excellent animations, voice acting, and a compelling story. Six hours of great gameplay, and I am only halfway through the content.

Contrary to many reviewer's complaints about the original being better, this game includes the original as a no-cost DLC. Played on ubuntu linux with radeon mesa graphic drivers, and I have had no technical problems.
