Leider echt kein gutes Rennspiel.

TOP GAME... End of Message !

Rollcage nostalgia at its finest.
Best fast paced race game on the market.
Only downside is its low popularity and a fairlly weak single play campaign.
(Wish there was some sort of story and more upgradeable stuff)

The racing experience is miles ahead of other arcade racers tho.

VR, Oculus Quest. i9 9900K, 32GB RAM, ROG Strix RTX 2080 Advanced

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2081912951

Too Fast to Handle

Two things to know about GRIP:
1) Average speed is 1k per hour.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1929666011
This is semi-truth, because all racing tracks are so long, that your speed kinda feels around 100miles. However, once you reach higher velocity - you can drive walls and ceiling!

2) Carcour mode is hardcore.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1970287514
There’s a collection-stunt mode in multiple difficulty.
Easy – you drive on flat surfaces.
Hard - twisted lines and wall driving appears.
Impossibru?! Oof… maintain specific speed, turn in precise angle, jump over gaps and continue ceiling steering w/o seeing the exit and then you may collect 1 of 2 orbs. Slowdown too much... your car falls off a wall and hello restart. ><

3) Ok, ok, one more thing. GRIP also has weapons pickups, you can annihilate others at lightspeed!

As a linear campaign game where you try to win races one after another this game falls short and would be worth instantly a negative due to stiff competition on steam in this heavily competed genre providing this kind of fun elsewhere in a more refined form. The devs have though considered their options well and added many modes of gameplay including carkour, multiplayer and arena bot matches making this a relatively packed racing game. Tons of different vehicles and skin DLCs on top of that. Some of them free.

I personally find the deathmatch and carkour levels most to my taste but there is something for everyone here which is it's main strength.

Not quite worth full price but easily worth it on a sale.

Hidden gem here. Solid, smooth, balanced, and optimized Combat-Racing Game without bugs or online latency issues.

Grip has lots of potential but a small player base; So grab a few friends, put on your favorite synthwave station, and race full-speed on all the walls.

Pros:
+ Tons of content for single-player and online.
+ Splitscreen multiplayer with Steam Remote-play.
+ Speed caps to increase difficulty.
+ Multiple game modes [Battle mode, Carkour, and 4 variants of Racing].
+ 30 Wheeled and/or Hover vehicles all with varying stats.
+ Lots of aesthetic customization on vehicles.
+ 29 tracks to race on that all look stunningly beautiful.

Cons:
- Low player base.
- No mines or any rear-firing type weapons at all.

I decided to pick this up after having it sitting on my wishlist for years and I gotta say I am not terribly impressed. After clearing nearly all of campaign and getting a better feel for the game I think I have to say I'd rank this somewhere at the bottom of item racers I've played.

There's virtually no way to interact with cars behind you with any items, defense when in the lead mostly comes down to brake-parrying missiles and sitting on shield pick-ups, but because of range limitations any distant leader is virtually untouchable and mostly immune from even being targeted.

Compared to a game like redout you have next to no air control and the game seems designed around frustrating your ability to even keep your tires on the track long enough to steer. In weaponless events you will be mobbed by AI that are virtually impossible to outspeed by any significant margin due to the AI rubberbanding. During long events you will have to routinely deal with as many as 8 opponents haphazardly boosting into your car, completely disabling your ability to steer, and often times launching you wildly off course into the distant scenery. It seems like the reset feature was made in anticipation of just how easily you can be launched or lose steering but even that is borderline useless if you get derailed because it loves to set you back as much as a quarter of the entire track. Narrowly miss a long boost jump where you've been in the air for nearly 6 seconds? Sorry pal, you're getting sent all the way back. Even in the low and normal difficulty events you are often times better off just restarting the entire race rather than respawning at all if derailed.

All in all, it adds up to a fun but frustrating racing game ruined by what feels like a disregard for player agency. Whether or not you dominate a race or have to spend 3 laps fighting at every turn for 6th feels overly determined by the random starting position, the excessive item respawn times, and whether or not the AI simply decides to nudge you 1/16th of an inch off course sending you spiraling into the skybox for what feels like an eternity. Also boost gain being determined by placement and no drift boost mechanic feels like a huge mistake. Just play redout or skydrift or sonic allstars or mario kart.

I was a huge fan of Roll Cage back in day was willing this game to rekindle the atmosphere of the original.
Sadly, at 2 hours in, I've found it lacking so far...

I excitedly played the first hour, willed myself through the 2nd hour so figure out if I was missing something, and came to the realisation that I'm just not enjoying it. Hard to put my finger on it, but the soul isn't there.

I'm not a fan of the track designs, many of which are not particularly accessible to first timers.. you often have no indication which way you are supposed to until you fly off the edge of a track and realise... uh, not that way. If you persevere and get to know the tracks, you have a better chance, suddenly coming 1st instead of last, and never really in between. However, I found I spent a great deal of time feeling like a pinball more than a racer and obstacles plonked bang in the middle of track were not conducive to a feeling of relentless speed.

I also found the sound design to be underwhelming. At default audio levels you can barely hear the music, just the tinny drums. A post in the forums suggested upping the music volume and lowering the effects. This revealed a soundtrack that clearly paid homage to the original. Try this and make up your own mind... I wasn't a fan, but you can swap this out for music of your choice.

It's not a terrible game, but its not an amazing one either. It brings together many of the Rollcage components, but for me, failed to capture the spirit or atmosphere of the original and I can't unfortunately force myself to like it (as much as I did want to)

If I play more and learn to enjoy the game more, I will come back and update but its not a game I would actively recommend.

Ask yourself a question.

Do you like to go fast?

Did you enjoy F-Zero? Xtreme-G? Wipeout?

This game is for you then.

It's difficult, maybe a little unfair at times.
Has it's moments, some of the tracks could probably have less small obstacles to get stuck on, perhaps a little more air control would be nice.

It is fun though, very fun. A racing game that appeals to that inner speed, the need to go faster.
The itch that you more than likely have because you're looking at it now.

Take it for a ride, it will not disappoint you.

Go fast.

the visuals, sense of speed & soundtrack ain't half bad, but the rest lets it down pretty hard, imo.

physics feel oddly stiff AND floaty at the same time.
the maps have a lot of odd geometry, that will send you flying all over.
Which, in combination, makes the vehicles feel like tanks, but hit one bumb or wrong angle & you'll be flying around like a pinball. Given that the vehicles can & will stick & drive on any surface it's really easy to get launched into & bogged down in the environment, halfway up some wall. Having to reset your vehicle often isn't fun...

the engine noise & drift screeching is ear-burrowingly monotone.
you'll hate or tune it out after the first 2 minutes, max.

the 'ultimate race' gamemode is a joke.
It's not a combat mode, it's not a race mode - it's a combination that doesn neither well.
you get feedback on scoring points for weapon hits, but nothing else.
Does leading the race win points? Not mentioned.
You might be leading first for the entire race, but come 3rd because the AI pounded more missiles into each other.
It doesn't feel right to hold back racing for easier weapon hits, if there is no actual take-down or health mechanics like in WipeOut's 'Elimination' gamemode.

multiplayer in EU is basically dead - you need dedicated channels / friends with the game to match up.

If you just want to go fast, RedOut is the better game.
If you want more WipeOut (or RedOut with weapons), try BallisticNG or Pacer.

if you're after more RollCage... make your own judgement I guess?

This game is fantastic. 9/ 10 is a very good score for a new racing game. This is what I would consider to be the true spiritual successor to F-ZERO on the SNES. You can remove the weapons and item slots from any race if you want to focus on your driving skills. You can change the designs, paints, decals, tires, appearance of your vehicle and you gain access to a multitude of them as you keep progressing in the tournaments and races. The music is simply awesome, the visuals and graphics are TOTALLY INSANE. The gameplay is marvelous and full of adrenaline. However - beware of the difficulty level. Even the tracks described as ''easy'' still have a few tricks to disturb your nice driving skills. The tracks identified as hard actually make me rage. Got it on summer sale and I don't regret it.

i did not play rollcage back in the day but I did play megarace and this definitively has those vibes but it needs the creep chessy announcer guy for full effect/. It has some touchy controls at times so I might have to dig out a controller to really enjoy this game. Its very quick and the power up is fun. Its pretty easy to get turned around this so you might be resetting your car a lot at first. As far as multiplayer I've only seen a few available games but i'm sure you can play with friends

This review is for the old folks, nobody under thirty is allowed to read this review.

Now that it's just those of us who learned how to do the Macarena the way God intended, from the 6pm local news, I can review this in a way we'll all understand: GRIP is Extreme G. They did it, the mad lads did it, they brought Extreme G into the future. The speed, the power ups, the controls, the feel of the vehicles, even the maps are similar (Though I haven't gone through an upside down farm yet, but maybe that's coming), it all feels like it takes a page out of the Extreme G playbook. (Back before the series got so fast that you had to snorp a rail of Adderall to not be playing a ping pong ball simulator.)

It is really, really fun, just the first few levels had me grinning like a 14 year old again, the graphics are better than anything we had back in the day, and right now, July 28th 2021, the cost to buy GRIP is $5.39 and the federal minimum wage is $7.25, there is way more than an hour's worth of fun to be had here.

On a scale of Mario Kart to Redout, I'd put it about in the middle, which is a really great spot for me. Easy to recommend.

Really fun game.
A spiritual successor to Rollcage Stage games, as you know - flippy cars, weapons and all.
Primarily a DnB OST, it's pretty nice.
A solid 90% of the tracks are really good, the 10% are generic but eh, playable.
I -really- enjoy it, and it's a shame the online is just non-existent.
That's why I suggest getting at least 3 other friends, enabling bots, starting a lobby.
It effectively has no online playerbase but you can usually get some backfill for the (maximum of) 10 players lobbies and have some serious fun.
Managed to get 5 other friends into the game and we play it monthly, go through all the maps, have some fun, pick it up the next month again.
Take it, it's usually dirt cheap on sales for what a good game it is.

It has some janky UI stuff but that's because of the whole no playerbase thing where they kind of stopped caring.
But it's really good, it's one of the rare complaints I have.

Great fast-paced fun with sleek modern aesthetics, solid controls, varied environments and a good chunk of vehicle customisation for the cherry on top. When you get the hang of it, jumping and flipping your vehicle from roof to floor (or the other way around) adds another dimension to a race that when used tactically, gives you clear advantage. I found myself playing GRIP with family members that enjoy racing games, this one was no exception!

Oh and by the way, things can get pretty fast

This game has potential, but it's completely ruined by the track design. The tracks are full of tiny bumps that will yeet you off, or obstacles that will stop you dead. This game doesn't have any air control, and it badly needs it, so all you can do is pray when you jump. The biggest challenge is actually driving on level ground. The number of tracks is also really small considering how short the tracks are.

Edit: After nearly finishing the campaign (placed 2nd instead of 1st, which you need to unlock the final race, cant be arsed) i can say that there is a very interesting game beneath the flaws, which is apparent in the few tracks that are actually interesting, and the handling that is good when the physics behave. Can't recommend to the average player, unless you are fine messing with it for a bit and dropping it, or masochists i guess. Beware that the ai is extremely annoying in the later stages, focusing all its aggression on you, so you can go from first to last just as you are about to cross the finish.

What can I say?

Played Rollcage and Stage 2 back in the day - and this is way more than a spiritual successor.

The soundtrack is full of absolute bangers, the sense of speed is SCARY especially at the higher engine tiers, and the weapons are more than just simple 'kart' clones, with the ability to consume them to buff their effects adding an extra level of tactical decision making during the carnage!

The vehicle customisation is fantastic, and the airblades give those good wipeout feels and an interesting dynamic between the wheels and antigravs!

The tracks are a good mix of closed tight nit racing prioritising precise racelines and good speed control, and wider destruction filled arenas, with more often than not multiple ways to navigate each course and still stay in the race!

And finally, the amount of post launch support from the developers has been fantastic, frequent big NOTABLE additions to the game (Literally added VR for free, and sure it might not be a full fat implementation, but it WORKS way better than it has any right, and i never tire of nerding out over my vehicle in VR garage mode) - and with all the additional modes in online, time trials, carkour, arena combat - theres plenty to seek your teeth into,

A perfect weekend session with beers and the gang type of game

not a bad game at all. however, there are some basic flaws that make it not really worth the time/money:

-tracks don't fit the driving style completely. basically the gist of the game is that the car can run upside down, so you should constantly switching between floor, ceiling and walls.the problem is that 60% of the time neither of that is available (the track is just on the ground) so the wall riding feature feels more like a novelty than core gameplay. other times the tracks are so bendy and the speed is so high that you can't really process where you should go to make the best time and just go with the flow hoping for the best. another problem is that the tracks are filled with little obstacles that can throw you flying, which can't be processed in time to avoid them and the speed the car are going. it feels like these obstacles where just put there to make the game harder.
-the cars all feel the same despite of different statistic
-weapons are basic and in general difficult to use, also there's little countermeasure, and now weapons to be thrown behind you (again to make the game harder imho). a couple of weapons I still don't get what they do.

in general is an above average game, but not one that you'll remember.

I’ve always enjoyed playing arcade racing games more than realistic driving simulators. The fact that Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge and the Mario Kart series are my favourites, and that I have nothing but positive things to say about Burnout Paradise should be indicative of how I like my racing games. I’d casually play an arcade racer once in a while for a change from what I usually play. Satiating my need for speed this time is GRIP: Combat Racing.

GRIP is the spiritual successor to Rollcage, which I haven’t played before. I found out that the developers added hovercrafts and space-themed racing tracks in an update after the game was released. Consequently, the version of GRIP I’m reviewing looks very much like a fusion of Rollcage and Wipeout, the latter of which I also haven’t played. Given my lack of experience with both classic games, you can say I went into GRIP with fresh eyes.

I like GRIP. The racing action is fast and exciting. I like the idea of racing vehicles that can be driven on their top or bottom, so you can continue to race even if they have flipped over. Having superfast vehicles that can drive on walls and ceilings also allows for really creative track designs. Some tracks with extreme banked curves, loops, and ramps reminded me of classic stunt racing games like Stunt Driver.

It also helps that GRIP is a beautiful game. The environment renders quickly and smoothly, allowing the details be admired even racing at high speed. Some landscapes are so stunning that I couldn’t help but slow down to take a split-second longer look, or take the “scenic” route. Many tracks really make great use of the verticality that is made possible with the type of vehicles that you drive. Some tracks have alternate routes that you can take for safer, faster, thrilling, or rewarding detours.

On the surface, GRIP truly delivers arcade racing fun. Yet the more I played, the more obvious its several weaknesses became. These are by no means major, game-breaking, or avoid-playing kind of flaws, but they’re hard to ignore. For one, the vehicle designs are unremarkable for the most part. With exception to the Nyvoss series of vehicles, many look very similar. You can customize your vehicle with paintjobs, decals, tires, and rims, but they’re all cosmetic. The latter two don’t change the vehicle’s performance at all.

While I like the variety of curves, loops, ramps, alternate routes, and locales of the tracks, the tracks themselves don’t seem fully optimized. Inviting ramps may send you sky high, but result in you crashing into barriers and obstacles. Given the speed of the game, and sometimes poor lighting and definition of the tracks, you may not realize where the track boundaries are. Instances like these can easily set you back.

The most annoying part of GRIP, however, is where the game resets your vehicle after falling off the sides. Sometimes it places you close to where you fell off, sometimes much farther away. With some track sections require you to have high speed in order to pass through, and where you’re being reset to may not allow you to gather enough speed, you’ll just end up plummeting off the track again…and again…and again. Sometimes restarting the race is just easier and less vexing.

It’s not long after I started playing GRIP that I realized it’s a grittier, more frantic interpretation of Mario Kart. There are analogous boosts and weapons (e.g., rear shield, missile that homes in on the first-place racer), as well as tracks reminiscent of Maple Treeway, Wario’s Gold Mine and Rainbow Road. The similarity between the two games isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it’s only an issue if you don’t like the gameplay in Mario Kart. The rubber band AI that Mario Kart is (in)famous for is also present in GRIP, and it may aggravate some players. While there are cute, whimsical characters and settings in Mario Kart to balance out the sometimes aggravating rubber band AI and gameplay, there isn’t any in GRIP.

Aside from racing, GRIP also has Arena and Carkour modes. Arena has you destroying opponents in combat arenas. I didn’t find this mode particularly exciting as it lacks truly strong “oomph” and big “boom!” for a game that’s subtitled, “Combat Racing”. Carkour is a single-player challenge mode, in which you traverse obstacle and stunt courses. This mode is interesting, but since the vehicles aren’t particularly nimble, they don’t seem fit for the stunt driving required. Consequently, I spent most of my time playing Race mode.

For a casual arcade racing gamer like I, GRIP delivers the hi-octane thrill and challenge I temporarily craved. Was I good at it? Certainly not, but it didn’t make the game any less enjoyable. I wanted a high-speed racing game, and GRIP fits the bill. Its similarity to Mario Kart is merely a distraction for me, as I’m a fan of the Nintendo game series. It’s the game’s lack of polish in some aspects of track designs, few distinct vehicle models, and inconsistent AI that keep me from spending more time with it. GRIP is a game worth checking out when it goes on sale

I wanted to like this game so much and gave it multiple chances, but it just has massive issues that completely ruin it. The handling is just off. For a game called Grip, you barely have any control. There are some cars that are better and you do get somewhat accustomed to the handling, but it never feels right, you never feel truly in control. Then there's the track design. I have absolutely no idea what they were thinking. You'll spin out of control going over minor bumps, fly off the track into space, fly and spin in the air, smash into a pillar or rock placed in the dumbest of places. And these moments are so inexplicably long that there is virtually no way of coming back into the race at higher difficulties. It's absolutely terrible and soul-crushing.

Incredible speeds, poor handling and trash track design are a recipe for endless frustration, most of the time completely out of your control. In Grip you're never really racing against your opponents, you never have that sense of accomplishment by doing a good lap. All of that is taken away from you as you're just fighting against the controls and track design. All you're left with after completing a race is utter exasperation and bewilderment.

There was yet another patch just last week that addresses some difficulty and track design issues. It's commendable that the developers are still committed to this game, but after a lengthy Early Access period and over two years after coming out of Early Access, it's also a testament to how the design is just broken.

As an old Rollcage fan, this is just a massive disappointment especially seeing as how the game is a true spiritual successor in many ways - the speed, the cars, the brilliantly intense drum and bass soundtrack. Sadly, the fundamentals just aren't there.

I don't understand the amount of vitriol for this game i see in the reviews. Some folks just come on to leave their 'not recommended' rating after playing 20 minutes and completely dumping the game forever; these people have not come here to play GRIP. Without getting too conspiratorial, the game was 82% off at the time of writing this review, so a cheap bad review would be plausible. I appreciate the negative reviews that actually have something to say, because GRIP has some issues, but nothing that makes it a poor future racer. My goodness is this game fun.

I'm coming from a long history of futuristic racers, starting with Killer Loop on the PS1, to most recently Redout, which are great games with great soundtracks (historically, future racers I've played have always had bangin' soundtracks, because without them, you simply lose that feeling of speed). GRIP is no exception to either of these qualities. Imagine my surprise when I saw that GRIP supports a custom jukebox!

Game play in GRIP is all about mastering the PLETHORA of courses available, each with their own aesthetic, lore (Yes! Check the game info page on the main menu), and shortcuts. However that's just where the game gets started. GRIP comes with multiple game modes that will challenge how you drive on the circuits. Some modes are specific to pure racing, others are based on raw carnage. Aside from racing, there is a deathmatch mode that plays like it sounds, and a parkour mode called 'Carkour' -- it's essentially a time based obstacle course, quite fun!

Full multiplayer support allows for even more game modes including team racing. Custom tournaments are especially fun if you have a core group you play games with often. Matchmaking in 2021 is not too bad, to get matched with at least one other person, but luckily, you can roll with bots online for as long as you want at any difficulty you're comfortable with while you wait for others to join.

I do recommend playing through the campaign and leveling up a bit to unlock all the extra goodies GRIP has to offer.

Car selection is pretty variable in design, with subtle differences in driving stats to suit your play style. Customization of your vehicle works much like in Rocket League -- personalize your favorite ride and get racing!

I fully recommend GRIP, especially if it is at all on sale. There is lots of fun to be had solo or with friends/strangers. I also recommend, if you do get it, read the guide, learn the tricks, and play some single player matches before really diving in.

There's so much more to this game I haven't even talked about. I don't want to ruin it for anyone just getting started. Get the game and give it a chance!

Grip Combat Racing

Introduction

Grip: Combat racing feels so much like the “Racing” version of Rocket League’s Rumble Game Mode. You are in vehicles that have the ability to defy gravity due to traveling at high speeds and you can pick up power-ups on the way that allows you to attack enemies, defend against them or give you a speed advantage over them. In simpler terms, it’s a high-speed, gravity-defying combat racing game.

Information about this Game

Base Concept

This game has no storyline, whatsoever. As I mentioned above, this game is really similar to the Rumble game mode in Rocket League. This is basically Mario Kart with cars that break the laws of physics due to overwhelming speeds. There are several game modes to play, and each of them has its own objectives. Some of the modes require survival while others solely rely on speed.

Gamplay Mechanics

At the first glance, one would think this is just like any other car racing game with weapons. But once you play it, you will see its uniqueness. Of course, there are several combat racing games like Twisted Metal, Gas Guzzlers, etc. But none of them have cars that can drive on walls or even ceilings. Wherever the car can go is a track, despite their direction as long as they drive fast enough. You can never topple your car as the car can be driven on both sides, which is crazy. I don’t think this is possible in real life, but it is still a cool concept. For a very fast-paced game, everything is surprisingly smooth. From drifting around sharp corners to jumping onto the track above you, everything is as smooth as a knife through butter.

However, the combat aspect is a bit weird as you can’t aim properly due to moving at such high speeds. Apart from the homing missile, other weapons are kinda hard to aim at your targets and hit them unless you are really close to them.

At first, I did not comprehend the utility of the Grip pads. Then I realized that they are actually boost pads with a different name, as speed gives grip in this game. So driving over these pads can act as a catalyst to aid you in covering up more area than other racers.

Visual Graphics and Audios

The roar of engines is always music to a Racing Lover’s ears. This game has hot engine roars, which are pleasant to the ears of a car fanatic. The game is also loaded with a beautiful collection of songs that allows the player to vibe while racing all these perilous races. A mode of escapism from the violent gameplay filled with bullets and explosions.

For a game where you travel at a speed of almost over 500 Kph, the vehicles and tracks are really detailed. The motion blur applied is on point and gives the player the feeling of driving at that speed. The Cars really look cool and futuristic. The dust effects on sandy tracks were a sight to see. Plus the appearance of the cars is fully customizable. I mean, you can customize the colors of the car, the decal, the tires, etc. So the vehicles can suit the players’ likings. The most important part of the visuals is that the respawn animation looks really cool!

Gamemodes

The game has a main Campaign Mode which is known as the “Grip League”. It comprises of 11 Tiers, and each tier has a certain set of races of varying difficulties and differences in the number of opponents. The types of races will be mentioned next.

Apart from the campaign mode, the game has a Single-Player mode, which is commonly known as the Quick Race modes in other racing games where the player can choose any type of race and configure the settings of the race, from the map to the number of opponents, to their liking. There are three main categories in Single-player Races:

  • Race: This category consists of the normal races. They include: - Classic Race: A traditional old-school race where speed is everything. The participants race and fight for the first place. - Ultimate Race: A race where speed and strength are vital. The more trigger-happy you are to destroy your opponents, literally, the more points you accumulate! - Elimination Race: Your only goal is to not be the last racer as the last racer gets eliminated after a fixed amount of time. - Speed Demon: In comparison to the other modes, you don’t have any weapons here. All that matters is letting out the speed demon inside you and conquering the track before your opponents manage to finish the race.
  • Arena: This category has only one game mode named Deathmatch, where the last car surviving wins. You need to literally crush your enemies and be the last vehicle driving. The winner takes all!
  • Carkour: This is a mode that deviates you from the competition and violence in the other game modes. Test your precision driving skills on these parkour tracks made for cars. Collectibles collected give bonus points.

The game also has a multiplayer mode where you can host or join other lobbies. The multiplayer mode only consists of two categories, namely Race and Arena. They have all the game modes that fall under these two categories. It also has a 4-player Split-Screen mode for local multiplayer!

Pros

  • Outstanding Visuals and soundtracks.
  • A huge collection of vehicles to choose from. These cars are customizable too!
  • Has a lot of grinding elements that are needed to unlock new vehicles.
  • Fun-to-play Multiplayer, although its multiplayer base is near dead.
  • Smooth controls accompanied by a unique concept. A really interesting twist to normal combat racing.
  • Great Split-Screen Support.
  • Destructible Vehicles. It also has a leveling system. You can also view your fully detailed career stats!

Cons

  • Multiplayer Base is Dead. Would have been really fun if it was actually alive.
  • The tutorial should give an introduction on how to use every weapon/powerup there is as they give instructions on how to use some of them. It took a while for me to get a hang of how to use certain powerups.

Conclusion

Racing games are always fun but combat racing amp up the fun factor by a ton. Grip Combat Racing may not be a perfect combat racer, but it still is a masterpiece. It’s really fun to play and one can invest hours into it without noticing time pass by or feeling bored. I recommend getting this game on a sale although it’s worth the base price!

I recommend this game to anyone who can appreciate arcade racing. The double sided driving aspect of it is quite unique in this genre and is treated as essential to playing this game, not just a gimmick.

Here is what you need to know:
+Single player campaign is a solid challenge with a variety of groups of predefined courses and race modes to tackle, many of which are followed by 1 on 1 rival races to advance to the next tier.
+Tons of vehicle visual customization options, including locations of decals, as well as a wide variety of vehicles with different stats that get unlocked as you progress.
?Sound track is the most elaborate collection of independent drum n bass music I've heard. I can't say I loved most of the tracks, but many of them do fit the gritty feel of GRIP
+Power up variety and balancing what people get given race position is all fairly balanced.
+Great visuals, though HDR support is wonky since it relies on # of nits for your display and it only supports a 1000 Nits minimum which exceeds lots of low to mid end HDR10 monitors. Possibly something that can be tweaked in a config file.
+AI is decent, not overly smart or stupid for each campaign tier.

I really wanted to love this game. I was a huge fan of the Rollcage series and was eagerly awaiting a sequel. Cars are awesome, music is awesome, graphics are awesome, but the tracks are terrible! I can't count the number of times I've followed the racing line into a wall, or a bridge, or a post, or a building, or into space. Even the finish line they decided (more often than not) to put in a box with square corners that brings your car to an immediate halt if you hit it. I'm fine with hairpin turns, chicanes, jumps, and even the odd obstacle, but no race track should be littered with this many concrete pillars. More often that not, if you hit one your race is over -- you'll never catch up to the pack.

The result is that a fun, surreal racing experience is replaced with an exercise in frustration, endless restarts, and ultimately deciding your time would be better spent on a different game. It's not that the tracks are hard (hard is fun), is that they aren't really tracks at all.

I just love it. It's an action-packed arcade racer with weapons. What more would you need? Is it realistic? No! Is it fair? Hell no! Is it fun? Definitely! Okay, the rockets miss more than they hit, some weapons are just useless and some of the tracks are crazy hard. Still I'd say, GRIP is the long-awaited sequel to ROLLCAGE. If you liked that, you'll like GRIP, and that's a promise. Just make sure you have a decent GFX card.

PS: oh and: you can add your own MP3s to the game and listen to them instead of the game-music. Is that cool or what?

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

“No” says GRIP.

Whether you win or lose can change in an instant, regardless of your efforts. You can race the race of your life, hugging the apexes and getting all the boosts, but still lose to a shot from the rear or the opponents race past you like nothing because of rubber-banding. Other times you can race like an idiot and still win. It just feels completely random.

Also I don’t think there is much skill you can develop in the game. Racing games are inherently skill based. You must master handling, cornering, the racing line etc. Here you can go through tracks without ever braking. The tracks are so wide, that things like cornering doesn’t really matter. What I’m trying to say is, that it doesn’t feel like one can get better at the game. It doesn’t help that most weapons are lock-on too.

I also think the tracks are poorly designed and very unimaginative for a future style racing game. Most tracks look like your racing in a Mars canyon with metal pipes going around.

I wouldn’t recommend it.

(PS. Still have great memories of playing Rollcage on my Voodoo 3.)

not gonna lie I really got this game primarily for vr. Overall my experience with this game on vr is its a blast to play the rush and everything you feel was pretty cool and not expected definetly took some getting used to as well. this is right now my favorite racer for vr. I didnt like the see through feel of the very close up view but the view where im real close up and can see the tires running pretty much the closest cockpit view to me i like. Overall the combat style with pick ups and traversing up walls and stuff id say its a overall solid game. id reccomend it for vr for sure.

Remember rollcage? I do. Blazing fast, racing upside-down guns blazing with up to 3 three friends on tracks laid out in space or alien wastelands looping and swirling in a chaotic manner with jumps and shortcuts... well that's its only wrapped in a much more modern candy wrapper so it looks dope as hell.
Its a campaign of sorts that's relatively long but ultimately just a series of races to unlock some vehicles and parts/paint but the bulk of the fun is had with playing with a friend(s) split-screen or online.

It looks great, it feels great. I think is an awesome reincarnation of one of the wildest racers out there and is well worth the asking price.

Grip is one of the most awesome, and best racing games I've ever played.
The amazing soundtrack fits well with the high speeds, pick-ups, loops, explosions and futurisic cars.
The maps are well made, and I love the fact that you can drive on pretty much everything - even the ceiling.
The graphics are stunning too, and looks SO good.
I really had a fun time playing it with a friend, and I love pretty much everything about it.

This game really brought memories back from my childhood. Played a game called Mega Race on my father's PC back in the 90's and then my friend got me into the first Wipeout game I played.....good times, but really love how this game just takes me back and its so beautiful. Worth the price especially when its on sale, and the DeLorean DLC is pretty cool.

If your a F-Zero / Wipeout / Mega Race fan then this game is for you!

4.5 / 5 (only because a lot of the vanity packs are not free)

OVERALL: 8/10

Honestly really fun and satifying care free arcade racing game.

GAMEPLAY: 8/10

Great gameplay ! Its like test driving a 1 to 1 scale of those crazy RC cars always landing on their wheels. It's fast, responsive, the control scheme also works well. Mix of race and combat nicely executed!

LEVEL DESIGN: 9/10

Different branching paths, crazy jumps, loopings, different terrains, half pipes... They did their job ;p

VISUAL & ART: 7/10

It looks good, nothing out of this world of course but you can't complain about it.

SOUND & MUSIC: 6/10

Average at best.

REPLAYABILITY: 7/10

I doubt most players would spend more than 15 hours on this game. By all standards it is decent.

This is my favourite racing game to play in VR. Driving on walls, ceilings, and through crazy tracks, at break neck speeds. You can even reach mach 1 in the right scenario. This games shines in multiplayer, playing with your friends, shooting weapons at them and trash talking each other. :-) There is also a deathmatch mode which is sort of like twisted metal. This game is worth full price but you can find it on sale on several websites.

this game is so much fun, played back at PAX EAST 20...15 i think? but its like death race mixed with that tyco RC car back in the late 90's that flips over and keeps racing. Amazing game, worth the buy. If you like to race and high speed boosters n guns, then this is your game. If your tired of racing, they got a mode called arena where its nothing but carnage and destruction!

This game is just a bland mix of various genres that excel in nothing and deliver nothing.
The races are just sad.
AI is just sad. You move from 1st to 4th back to 1st in an instant.
Combat is just sad.
Powerups are just not suited to this sci-fi settings that, should underlie, some kind of believability.
This is just a glorified Mario Kart.
Really uninspiring.

Wow. I thoroughly hate this game.

It has all the cheap AI mechanics of Mario Kart with the style of Wipeout yet none of the redeeming factors of either. AI will unload all their power ups on you as you turn the corner for the finish line, the brakes are almost nonexistent yet portions of the track clearly want you to use them and if you dare to use the e-brake your vehicles backend takes way too long to recover.

Parts of the track send you flying into the air and even at one point it kept telling me I was going the wrong way for a solid 10 seconds when I wasn’t.

The default weapon controls are cumbersome, requiring you to hold the right trigger and somehow fire your secondary weapon using RB which, of course, causes you to lose speed. Random obstacles on the side of the road take your vehicle to a complete dead stop and having to hold the B button to reset your vehicle means it takes about 2 seconds before it actually registers the reset request and another 2 seconds before you're actually back on the track and having to accelerate from almost zero while seeing all the AI go flying past you. Instead of reset it should be labeled “take me back to last place.”

It’s like the people who like this game like it because its ironically bad and “hardcore” or they have nostalgia for when these types of games used to be popular among a small subset of gamers for a brief moment in history.

Its just a shame that this genre has showed almost no signs of refinement over the last 20 years.

GRIP: Combat Racing is a high speed racing game with combat power ups.

The racing is chaotic in a good way. There's driving on the walls and ceiling. Flipping your car upside down isn't a big deal since you can keep on driving. Landing on 2 wheels to keep driving until you recover. Crazy level design where at one moment you are driving on the floor, next on the ceiling or a side wall or going inside a tube. And if that wasn't enough, you have power ups that can speed you up or disrupt the other racers. You get to enjoy all of this to drum and bass music.

There are 2 types of progression. One is the 11 tier campaign that unlocks power ups and the ability to charge them (after completing tier 7). The other type is general experience and levels that grant access to other cars and customization like decals and wheels. A hyper speed option can be unlocked and toggled after you hit Mach 1 once in any race.

Each car comes in 2 variations, ground that have better handling and air that have better speed. To suit any playstyle, there's a selection of 30 cars with different stats for handling (grip) or top speed. With high speed and crazy turns I found the cars with the highest grip to be the best. Mirage was my choice.

Other than the classic races, you can have a pure race with only you and the speed power up or arena deathmatch where the goal is to inflict damage or blow other racers. The bots will give you a challenge at the races while you may find them underwheling in the arena deathmatch. The campaign does a good job at mixing them for good variety with a 1v1 duel at the end of the tiers (starting from tier 3). For the challenge seekers there's a carkour (car parkour) course that includes trick jumps or endurance tracks.

While you can learn the boost and power up placements to get a better lap time, there's always an RNG element with which power up you get and sometimes a well timed rocket can steal your victory.

For achievement hunters:
The hardest are the carkour courses, then the campaign. There's a grind for total laps and destroying opponents.

Quite simply the best arcade racer going. Going above and beyond what the original Rollcage series achieved.

This is the sort of game that you hop on to play for 20 minutes, and the sheer variety of maps and modes keeps you playing for 20 hours. The feel of the cars is addictive, being fast yet weighty, and the level design is top notch. Learning the twists and pitfalls of each track is deeply satisfying.

The soundtrack re-ignited my love for Drum & Bass, and my love for racing games at the same time.

Tip: increase the saturation in the options to get a more 90's Rollcage look. I love that they have included the option to modify things like that.

poor follow up of rollcage but still probably the best one there is.
gets boring quite fast. campaign mode is existing just for the sake of being there, not realy something to even mention.
poor support for controllers. remaping controls is a pain... half of the controller types arent picked up at all, the rest are not entirely remapable.
talking about control... its not even possible to navigate the menu with just a keyboard and you have to use mouse. very anoying.
summary: its like someone made a nice shiny copy of a car you always liked, drove it to your drive way and locked the keys inside. a good looking game with alot of potential but butchered by messed up or unfinished details that matter.

This game is Rollcage 3, it is made by the same core folks who behind the series.
This game has 28 banging tracks (and growing).
This game is fast and demands you know what is up, and what is down.
This game has very nice effects, including signal static 24/7 (which you can disable).
This game has a good campaign to ease you into the combat mechanics and tracks.
This game has rollers (wheel-based), and airblades (anti-grav) variants for each vehicle.
This game has a good vehicle livery/decal customization system.
This game has semi-destructible environments.
This game has both simple and ball busting tracks.
This game sates my appetite for combat-racing.
This game has a high skill ceiling.
This game made me have a splitting headache from Redlining so hard.
This game should be in your library, join their discord server to organize races with others and talk to the developers that made this fine game.
This game makes feel euphoric.

- The Campaign is boring.
- The Deathmatch gamemode is boring.
- Ultimate Race item pickup RNG can be absolutely horrible at times, even when you are in the middle of the pack trying to rack up points by damaging others with weapons.
- Item pickups can sometimes ignore lock-ons for seemingly no reason. Makes them feel like they have a mind of their own.
- The tutorial doesn't even tell you about all the item pickups, it only tells you about like 3 of them. Less than half.
- Tutorial doesn't teach you about charging items. Did not know you could do that for the longest time.
- The raptor machine gun is pretty reliable I guess. Rockets not so much.
- Track design needs way more attention.
- It's extremely easy to get turned around just by slightly hitting a piece of the track.
- In a game where you're constantly changing surfaces to race on, you would think there would be better aerial controls but no, they suck.
- In an game where you're going extremely fast, it is annoying to brake and kill most of your momentum.
- Mindbender is a horrible track.
- The Carkour courses don't have any indication if you've done them or not. You have to go into Game Info > Leaderboards just to see what ones you have/haven't done.
- Job Site is a terribly designed Carkour course. If you get stuck and need to reset say goodbye to all of your progress.
- One time I fell directly on the rear of my car on Job Site and the game decided to randomly start the course over, getting rid of all my progress.
- You can't jump in the Carkour course Job Site. This may be the case for the other Carkour courses but I do not want to play this game anymore.
- I still don't know the name of the slow down time item pickup. Maybe that's all it does but I don't know. Would love to be told exactly what all it does. Maybe the game tells you the name at the bottom of the screen but the item is rare and I don't really get it often. I don't feel like booting up the game just to try looking for the name.
- Some of the vehicles have better grip as their Airblade versions rather than their Classic versions (makes total sense).
- The soundtrack is alright I guess.
- Screw trying to 100% this game's achievements.
- I don't have a VR headset so fuck me I guess.
- Distance is cheaper by default. It actually has a somewhat interesting Campaign. You can make your own maps in it, too.
- Just buy Distance instead.

It's a great wipeout-like game, probably the best out there. Tons of contents in the form of different cars, tracks and modes. A good selection of weapons, randomly pickable in game, makes any race pretty varied.

It comes with a campaign and MP modes, with quite complete customisation features for the combat cars with unlockable parts (cosmetic only).

What seal the deal for me is the VR adaption. It is included in the base game, is quite polished and absolutely another experience from the flat version.

Experienced on the Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality. VR Review Only.

You can view my VR review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/tv4fp2NQZCg

I am only reviewing the VR experience. I haven't put enough time into the game to do a proper review for the full game. I am using my experience having played thousands of hours in VR to write this review. I think this review is only helpful to those interested solely in the VR experience and do not care about the pancake experience.

I do not think this is a good VR port. Compared to other VR racers of the same type, like Distance, Redout: Enhanced Edition, or BallisticNG, this VR experience is subpar. That's the main reason I cannot recommend it. It also happens to be the most expensive one out of the bunch.

What makes it worse than the other VR experiences? Well, it's multiple reasons. The UI is just freaking ugly in VR. It's like they strapped an LCD monitor to your head and then put some rather poor 2D drawings in the transitions from the menu into the game. From there you get to the VR visuals & sounds.

They are both underwhelming. The visuals are not the worst I have seen in VR for a racer, but it has this washed look. The best comparison I can make is to Borderlands where it has almost this cell-shaded look, but with muddy colors & textures and poor lighthing with just almost an invisible haze making everything seem dull. The 3D visuals do not pop in VR.

Then you have the poor camera view. You can either set the camera in front of the vehicle, on top of the hood, or to the top-rear of the vehicle. You almost have to pick the rear-view if you want a good look at the track with all the twists and turns involved. And while I don't get motion sickness, I could see some people getting it with the sudden drops, spins, and topsy-turvy views. I also think the speeds were rather slow when you're not boosting. The sense of speed is almost never there with the combination of that and the dull visuals.

I also found the gameplay to be challenging, but also random. Sometimes I would be racing well and then I would get a hit by a missile from behind and suddenly I was finishing the race in last place. Other times I would be racing rather poorly and just get lucky with the pickups and lots of speed boosts and end up finishing first. There are lots of racing vehicles to unlock and many racing tracks. Plus different modes, like a demolition arena mode. You can also customize your vehicles with unlocks. However, I just wasn't having fun ... I have played better VR racers.

Rate 4.5/10. It's weird that they keep saying I came first. Kinda gross.

Didn't actually think this game was gonna be this fun. Of course games are going to be more fun with friends but GRIP really takes that above and beyond. It's one of those games that will make your neighbors hate you because of how loud you're yelling and laughing with your friends.

The fast paced action also has this weird effect where it makes you more responsive and snappier at other games. your reflexes will thank you! I completely recommend this game.

Feels like the DOOM of racing games. Fast paced action with great graphics.

Dieselpunk Mario Kart, but so fast you can outrun the blue shell at mach speeds. Really fun, really frustrating, but really fun.

~~ ( VR ) VIRTUAL REALITY USERS README: ~~

So i got this game before the big VR support update (never got around to playing it tho) and was pleasantly surprised when i saw that it made the big plunge; as i own a vive pro (w/ wireless). I have to admit ive only played it an hour and a half but ill certainly be coming back to it.

The only problem regarding VR: (and i didnt have a problem with it personally, but others might)
I would definitely get your VR legs first, or try the game normally without VR first. avoid if easily nausiated.
^*I want to emphasize that that's not anything for the developers to fix, it just is what it is (i wouldnt want them to take away the thrill of flying past things at blistering speeds obviously). All things considered they did a pretty good job at reducing this imo xD

Though i usually am a keyboard and mouse guy ive only tried this on controller, and as far as i can see it looks like its probably much better on a controller (PC compatable Xbox or PlayStation controller, or similar), especially if your strapped into a VR headset, though i'd probably still reccomend a controller even in normal gameplay over a keyboard and mouse; and thats usually my go-to.

I reccomend, especially to seasoned Virtual Reality users. It honestly feels like something that was made for VR and not something that was choppily thrown in to be flashy. It's not something you'd probably play all day long in long sessions but something you can all too easily come back to again and again, which i will be doing.

***If your reading this not long after my post keep in mind VR support was JUST implemented on this game. R8 my post so VR users can see :D!

While not anything groundbreaking or breathtaking, GRIP knows what it wants to be and does it very well. It's got enough content to keep you going for a long while;and the sense of speed and just fun is fantastic. A solid variety of vehicles and a good customization system with elaborate color editors means you could spend hours just playing around with that.
There are a few problems, of course. The main one being that the physics seem to be inconsistent and even glitchy at times. One track in particular has a tunnel with speed pads on the top; but when you jump to reach them, the game resets you as if you drove off the track. It creates unnecessary frustration more often than it should - but doesn't hinder the overall experience too much.
Another issue is that, while there's a good amount of lore presented in the game's manual, I was a bit disappointed by the fact that there are no character portraits of your enemies. There are long paragraphs of backstory and their vehicles are shown, but you never see the drivers themselves. However, that's just a really minor thing.
Overall, this game is definitely worth playing for anyone looking for some crazy, racing action.

Fun arcade racer. Campaign feels a little too long/repetitive. Getting into a multiplayer match is nearly impossible without using an external matchmaker (Discord).

Graphics are okay. The UI needs some work, especially in VR.
Sound is pretty good
Maps and cars are cool, has a fair bit of customization

Good to pick up for a few matches at a time, but I couldn't spend more than 30 minutes per session.

Like other racing games, make sure you have a controller.

I've feel I've given this game a fair chance, but the crappy steering at low speed (compared to something like Wipeout) and in the air makes it incredibly frustrating. Also, sometimes you're simply transitioning between 2 paths and you'll get picked up by the reset mechanism...

GRIP: combat Racing is an arcade racer with guns (tons of guns) and cranked up to hardcore difficulty and speed (basically Extreme-G with weapons). The game is truly hard, deadly, extremely fast and ultimately plain awesome.

A massive amount of tracks, the great soundtrack, lots of customisation and a brilliant game flow make this one of my most favourite arcade racing games released within the recent years.

Mainly it made me feel like I was playing a remake of POD Racing with weapons, which is one of the most awesomely nostalgic feelings I've got in quite a while.

GRIP is a game where on average you are driving at 400 KPH. You can drive on walls. You can attack your opponents with a variety of weapons. Sure seems like this arcade game rewards going fast and being aggressive! So why is it that hitting the smallest bump in the environment makes your experience more punishing then a racing simulator? You usually stop dead or float around in the air for a fair amount of time. It takes forever to get back any speed as does restarting your car position and of course the enemies are rubber banding because racing games can't seem to ever progress AI wise. And then there's all the random bits of maps where you go out of bounds for the slightest missed turn/too much speed. Dumb design for a crazy fast fantasy arcade game that should not be about constantly thinking how much you need to break on every tight turn but the game can be fun when you encounter an actually good map.

If you were a fan of the nutty hyperspeed epilepto-racers like Rollcage and Extreme-G and looking for some highly polished breakneck madness, this is something to give a serious look.

Tons of options, fov, frame limit, vsync, your own custom music folder to go along with the solid soundtrack. It feels like some pride and skill went into the UI/UX.

There's a load of cool vehicles, those with wheels and without and I have to say... some of the best looking and most manly tyres I've ever seen. You can mess around with paint, rims, decals and all that jazz all day as well.

This is what video games are for.

At first glanced it looked really cool, always liked combat racing, but when I got into the game I discovered bad unresponsive controls. Just this thing alone would make me stop playing it, but the racing is chaotic, not in a good way, the tracks are confusing, sometimes you have no idea where the tracks goes and what surfaces can be driven on.

This game is just not much fun. There's nothing very wrong with it, but there are much better games of this genre out there.
