So meine Lieben,

This is a great game! I absolutely love Blackguards, actually liked the first game better but I'll take as many Blackguards as they put out there. I wish there were more of them. The story line is well done, the characters have very distinctive traits and personalities, the voicing is excellent. The strategy is challenging, trying to figure out what skills will benefit me in the long run is a bit difficult but certainly doable. There are many to choose from. Only problem I really had was trying to obtain sufficient gold to purchase all the items I wanted, haven't figured out how to do that yet. I highly recommend Blackguards 1,2 and the dlc. and you can grab the whole franchise for less than 3 bucks on sale. Can't beat this.

Either focus on the gameplay or the story but don't deliver a game that is weak in both. The turn-based combat is below average and the decisions in the game are mostly meaningless as the ending is determined by random chance instead of actual consequences of the player's choices.
Even wating for a few years to see some patches did nothing as those just didn't arrive. Don't buy it.

This is a hell of a lot better than the first one. I ignored this until recently because I hated how the first one played out in such a limited fashion. This is better than it in all ways. Too bad this isnt what the general consensus of the players wanted and we'll prob never see a 3. Its worth a pick up if if you like srpgs, and a lot better than the first.

I was a bit on the fence about this but I guess it deserves a thumbs up.
I'd say it's a shaky 7/10.

The game has a pretty good, if mostly, straight forward story.
The combat is fun with a lot of different abilities to choose from, (although a couple of them are pretty powerful and you really need them) but half of the time I was a bit confused about the objectives in each battle.
They should really have put a lot more time in to explaining what you were supposed to do (and why) in each battle. This led to me having to restart a lot of fights (which luckily you can do quite easily) after a couple of rounds, because I suddenly had a light bulb moment or it turned out that what I thought I was supposed to do was completely wrong.
Also, you can only view the battlefield from up above or from a fixed angle (you can zoom, though), which was really annoying at first and a little bit less annoying later on.

In between the combat you find yourself in camp or in towns.
There you can talk to your companions and you will be presented with a lot of choices about people that you really never got enough information about. A standard dilemma could go like this:
-Should I kill this one?
-He is pretty evil.
-But if i kill him, will I be evil?
All the while I was thinking to myself; well I don't even know the bugger. What has he done apart from throwing fireballs at me from a platform? Hmm ... he looks and sounds pretty much like a villain ... I guess it's thumbs down for you, whoever you are.
So, pretty much like a real ruler, I guess.

There are a lot of weapons and armor in this game and a complete set will give you bonuses. I may very well be wrong here, but it seems it's impossible to complete a lot of the sets. Seeing as they are really expensive, thats just plain evil. In the end, I just saved my money and played with the ones I got, which was fine playing on normal, but kind of made that part of the game pointless. (it may very well be that the drops are random though, so another playthrough could have seen me getting different armors, in which case I guess it's OK)

In the end I would say a lot of the game is like this; you press one thing, expecting one of two outcomes and end up thinking; what? Why? Oh well ...

The voice acting is good, the music atmospheric and the art is top notch in my opinion.

All in all, I think it deserves a thumbs up and I would buy a sequel.
It just seems to me that it could have been a lot better with just a few minor, (and probably inexpensive) tweeks.

Now that was something unexpected. I don't want to write any spoilers, but compared to Blackguards 1 this game is much more evil, more more cruel and for me this all felt much more personal.

On the other hand there are less locations to travel, no different teachers in different locations

music, graphics and so on is similar to first part and i don't have anyb objections. I had some troubles with user interface in first part, here it was mostly changed to better. And during whole gameplay i had experience only two-three bugs i noticed, twice I had to restart fight which was stucked somehow and one was with dwarf in camp, after one point he was just repeating same thing and I wasn't able to go to other dialog options anymore - but who knows, maybe this was intended.

all together, i am very satisifed. Huge progress from (quite good) first part

Its not fun.
Blackguards had charm and it was difficult at the start then got easier when you got certain abilities but had me scanning the internet for a walkthrough to get me through certain battles that you could only win with rng. I had fun and completed the game.
Blackguards 2 is not an improvement on the original. Got so far then had to restart as the build I was building did not work. I float through some fights then the difficulty spikes so hard I can not progress. I think mage and cheese is the only way to go.

Game has solid gameplay mechanics and a good story, but the reason I can't recommend it is simply, there are many missions where the objective after winning the battle is too escape, but the game gives no indication at all as to where you actually need to take your units for it to count as escaping, had to re-do or take forever rotating all my surviving units to every corner of a map just to try to find with part of it counts as the escape zone.

I really enjoyed the first Blackguards. I'm giving up on this one.

Too many secret triggers, like when you have to move to stop the infinite flow of enemies. Some all-or-nothing moments where you need to have just the right build. The first one had a few things like this, but this one is worse. The battles tend to be bigger and take longer, which is great, except for the part where it's hard to tell which hexes are poison and which aren't... so you can totally screw yourself near the end of a really long battle when you step in something you didn't see.

It's not terrible. If it were the only game in my Steam backlog I might keep beating my head against it, but I reached my frustration limit and am moving on.

There is nothing left, but the skills of DSA (read: The Dark Eye) - all the good stuff...gone!

It's now a diablo-clone in terms of character-building, where you click them blindly and will get the best out of it; heck your party doesn't even matter anymore....thanks to cannonfodder.
Story-trigger progress nicely, thanks to certain areas, that need to be conquered and one false step and you might end up in a terrific battle, that is not meant to be triggered yet :>
Good ol' bugs are back in town - I have both games' boxed edition as well and thought, that at some day it will get patched.

BG1 was way more enjoyable....as is Drakensang and even Battle Isle:Phase IV Incubation (brutal game!)

...and then I saw a console gameplay and everything became obvious.

If you expect something near DSA roleplaying...you shall not!

Blackguards 2 is a turn-based, party-based game. The main character (Cassia) is joined by the three remaining members from BG1. The skill system from BG1 is mostly still in place, though it has been simplified quite a bit. The major changes from BG1 include the existence of a larger army to command (beyond the four members in your primary party) and the existence of defensive battles.

Pros:
  • I enjoyed most of the hand-crafted battles. They provided a nice diversity of objectives, beyond just killing everything. Boss fights were suitably challenging and diverse.
  • As with BG1, I enjoyed the level-up system.
  • Story was OK.
  • Lots of reviewers complained about the difficulty, though perhaps these comments were made under an old patch or something. I played on normal and found the difficulty perfect. Challenging enough to warrant a retry on a few boards without becoming tedious. It is noted that I did do some light recon prior to my playthrough and trained Takate as an archer, which made a great many levels much easier than they would have been otherwise.
  • You can easily get this on sale for $2.

YMMV:
  • The addition of troops beyond your primary party is a bit of mixed-bag. The unique troops were cool and diverse. The general troops (swordsman, archer, pikeman) were OK too. However, the presence of these meatbags and the abundance of ranged/spell options rendered melee/tank heroes somewhat useless. This was a major shift from BG1 and went a bit far IMO.
  • Items were a bit underwhelming and didn't really drive any interesting decisions.
  • I always love the ability to choose which I fight I need do next in many game genres. This game appears to have that in play, in choosing which city to conquer next. Each city also includes which bonus your army will receive upon victory. In practice however, it rarely makes sense to do anything but attack the next easiest battle.
  • As compared to BG1, spells always hit now. Though it was kind of frustrating to miss a spell in BG1, I appreciated the ROI I got from leveling up spell. This change certainly makes spells stronger in this game.

Cons:
  • After a set number of offensive fights (I think every three), you must defend one of the cities you have captured. These battles were typically very easy, very lengthy, and resulted in no experience or items for your main party. These were kinda sorta neat idea in concept, but by the end I dreaded triggering these. Game would be better off w/o these I think.
  • Freeze spell is OP. I intentionally restricted myself in only giving this spell to one of my mages, as many fights could otherwise be won in two turns by simply nuking everything on the board four times.
  • The decisions required post-boss victory are weird and don't fit with the rest of the game. This is a minor con of course as the game is essentially already over at that point, but still.. weird.

I was in the minority in liking BG1. My rating for BG2 is somewhat similar. Some things are changed this time around, some for the better, some for the worse; but it is a definitely a different game, which on the whole is a good thing. Some parts of this game drag a bit, and not everything is done perfectly, but if you liked BG1 or like party-based, turn-based games then you should give this a try (for $2 you have very little to lose).

Overall: 8.5/10

Pros:
Mercenaries make battles way easier even with more enemies than original
Magic makes battles easier
Lots of cool stuff you can do

Cons:
Puzzle missions can be pretty annoying, no way to remember win conditions if you forgot (they sometimes say in dailog),
Fourth mission (Dwarf running) can be a headache.
If not using a magic, battles will be harder.
Unclear why interrogations fail sometimes

If you are looking for turn based, party building, RPG gameplay then you will not be dissapointed at this price point. Is it perfect? no. The graphics are nothing to write home about, the characters are lovable and their commentary is well written but there is very little of it overall. If you are more into the gameplay than the fluff this game will serve you well for what it costs today. Want something new and shiny? look elsewhere.

Distinct improvement on the first. Characters are more likable, main character is better developed, story is better written, and leveling is streamlined. Combat is still fun and increased fight brevity keeps it from going stale.

That said, magic is overpowered as fuck and the bugs are real. 100% achievements is only possible by falling through the right bug hole, and multiple battles can only be finished if you can kill things offscreen (get level 4 ice spell or get ready to slam that try again button) or completely prevent the enemy from casting certain spells.

The first 3 hours of this game is a scripted walk through. Once you get past that, the map opens up offering alternate paths. The battle maps are isometric with little room to maneuver. Some scenarios require recon by replay. Weapon and armour stats are a little cryptic and require research. I thought the game had 360 degree camera rotation. The video I watched looked like it did. But no, its isometric with some pitch control. My bad for not researching it more. I would have never got this game if I knew that. However, in fairness I give a thumbs up. The game does good things with party management, and story continuity. Voice acting is BBC quality.
It took me 36 hours to complete. Some people play it again just to configure their party differently with the equipment, and choose different options for the branching dialogues.
You are given four characters, a fighter, a dwarf, a Mage, and your protagonist who is chaotic. You get to direct her as good or evil. The battles are pretty much scripted but you can choose which location to attack. Its not an iron man game, you need to save. Replays, or possibly going back to an earlier save is par for the course. Its easy to paint yourself in a corner. But in reality I never had to go back past my last save, although the possibility was there. The battles are scripted well. Some require you to activate levers, and traps to open doors or drop bridges. Its very obvious what you have to do. Only one battle had a situation where I had to activate a rope pulley 3 times to expose an enemy inside of a cage, while battling flying insects etc. Tactics depend on positioning for ranged weapons and attributes of-course for all (melee) in turn based initiative on a hex field.
I got this game cheap so I'm glad I stuck it out. Its a good deal.

The strugglebus rides again!

Corrupt saves, crashes, and broken mechanics ruin this game. The plot and play would be awesome as Pen & Paper, but sadly does not translate well to the digital format.

Oh ... and I finished this game in the time played. Just under three hours.

Compared to Blackguards 1, on hard difficulty it is much more easier and if battle seems unwinnable you can only blame your tactics instead of RNG like in Blackguards 1. Story could be more detailed but at least it allows you to make choices which will affect endgame. Cons of Blackguards 2 is less options with character customizations than in Blackguards 1 and some quests bug which might prevent you from getting Saint achievment.

Less RPG, more strategic and tactical gameplay.

Often it's trying to survive and fullfill tasks, to proceed.

And it gets quite fast monotonous, the same 12 playable classes over and over again, etc.

The good thing, the story, but i would rather like to read this as a book, honestly.

5/10
