this is probably my favourite blackwell game, because the story and writing just keeps getting better. the fourth game has a lot of emotional gut punches and there were a couple times some of the characters and their motivations were hitting too close to home that i had to turn the game off. based on what i've heard, the art changes in this one were a little controversial but they appear to have been changed when i played it back to the style of the previous games, so don't let that scare you off. visually, this game is a massive improvement in terms of lighting and shadow, which looks incredible. if you care about game length, this game is a little bit longer then the previous ones and is a little more fleshed out without feeling bloated.

Wow, I'm amazed by the fact that this is the fourth installment but the quality of the franchise does not seem to have dropped at all since the first game. If anything it's even better, with even more interesting plot twists that really engross the player.

Blackwell Deception is the sequel to Blackwell Convergence and fourth game in the series. The game deals with the same concept as the previous entries did however I felt that the tone is darker in this part. Earlier entries, kept things a little light with Joey being the comic relief but I believe Joey was given more depth over here hence the developer had to tone down its comic relief element.

It's a great addition to the series and personally I enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the game. In this part, they start to tell the players that something is wrong and using all the knowledge from past games they build that into it.

Just to note that, you need to play previous three games in the series to properly understand what is going on.

The Blackwell Deception is the fourth game in the Blackwell series. In this game, Rosa and Joey have to help an old friend of Rosa's investigate a couple of strange deaths related to a mysterious scam artist.

After putting the spirit of a haunted boat to rest in a mission that quickly goes awry, Rosa receives a call from Jeremy Sams, an old friend from her time with the newspaper, who needs her help finishing up a story he was working on. Quickly discovering a supernatural element to the case, Rosa takes over, following a trail of lives turned upside down due to the influence of a mysterious fake psychic.

The puzzles in this game are pretty similar to those in the rest of the Blackwell series: inventory object and dialogue puzzles. The difficulty was pretty much on par with the other games in the series: a couple of the puzzles were very tricky, but for the most part they were challenging but fair.

Rosa's development in this game is pretty interesting. She seems to have mostly turned away from her attempts at a writing career and has now leaned in to being a full-time medium for hire. While there are a number of times when she doubts herself, she ultimately feels that what she does is worth it. We also get a little bit of information about Joey's mysterious life, and a little bit of lore about how Rosa and Joey's connection works.

The story in this game stood out for me compared to the story in the previous games, although those were good as well. The ghosts seemed very thematically tied together, and a sense of missed potential and regret for what could have been follows all of them. The game's villain was also great, and I really loved the slight cliffhanger at the end of the game.

Overall, The Blackwell Deception was a really great game and probably my favorite in the Blackwell series overall. The story and gameplay were really intriguing, I loved the game's atmosphere and tone, and it was all-around a really solid entry in the series that left me very excited for the next game. If you've been playing and liking the series so far, you'll probably like this one. 9/10

[Reviewed by my wife] There is a feel of nostalgia hovering over this Blackwell. While Rosa is more assertive and confident, we also come across missed opportunities and discarded paths. This point and click stands apart from the other 3 by starting on a new overall mystery and sets Rosa in a world where there might be other true mediums. Only one thing nagged at me, I kept hoping the opening sequence would be wound back into the plot… but it never was and that just felt a little strange. But once again the ability to change between Joey with his ghostly powers and Rosa who can interact with the environment was very well done.

The fourth game of the series and the longest one so far. Roseangela has made her service to the public, anyone who think they are dealing with supernatural being can contact her and she'll head to that area to investigate, this means we are going to have many cases to solve but of course, they'll somehow be linked. I enjoyed this story so much and loved the character's portrait, they keep making them look better and better.

The artwork is really good, as well as the soundtracks. Rosa now can use her phone to look up information and read emails, she also keeps notes which she can combine to get a new clue. The map is like the previous games and the voice over is still as good as before.

The puzzles are logical, some of them are difficult, and if you are after achievements you need to do things in a certain way to get them. I have to mention that in this game we get some background story about Joey which is pretty interesting, I'd love to learn more about his life, I hope they will reveal more about him in the fifth game.

Pros:
+Very good story.
+Beautiful soundtracks.
+Well-done voice over.
+Beautiful and detailed pixel art +Nice characters portrait
+Fast travel map.
+Manual + Automatic save files.
+Hinting system (Asking Joey what to do next)
+Steam achievements.

Cons:
- When you Alt+Tab the game crashes, it happened to me multiple times that I even had to restart my PC.

This game felt just right and the ending of it really good, I wonder what will happen in the next and final game of the series. Highly recommended.

As an avid player and lover of the point and click genre as a whole, I can easily say that this game is one of the best. The Blackwell series as a whole is extremely well done, with an ongoing story line that is well thought out and genuinely engaging, and characters that are fleshed out and multi-dimensional. The whole series is worth playing, but this particular game is, in my opinion, the best. A lot of the actual mechanics of the gameplay have been perfected, where as in previous games there were annoying little aspects that would slow you down. That being said, starting with this game before playing the others is a mistake, and it is entirely worth playing as a whole series. Wait for a good sale, and give the story the respect it deserves by playing it through in order.

The fourth game in the Blackwell series is a good one and comes close to being just as good as the finale.

If you've come this far in the series, you're likely invested in Rosa and Joey's journey. Deception continues to develop the relationship between Rosa, Joey and their connection to the spirit world.

The art and I would say even the gameplay are even better than the previous game. It appears the portraits were updated at some point because the current pictures on Steam are the old ones.

It’s 2010, a little more than three years after Rosa suggested she and Joey take their spiritual work professional. She and Joey have developed a smooth and comfortable working relationship, when she gets a call from a former colleague. Jeremy Sams’ name has popped up in Blackwell Legacy and Blackwell Convergence, and now we get to finally put a face to the name. We also get to finally meet Sam Durkin, who was only a voice on the phone and still a college student in Blackwell Unbound.

Rosa has now even more fully entered the Digital Age and has a mobile phone! This is great because you can check email and search ‘Oogle’ without needing to return home every time. Along with this, her notes have transferred to being kept in her phone, and the combining/linking clues to move forward the plotline is back (apparently, according to the game commentaries, due to backlash over its removal in the previous game). Joey’s ‘wind’ ability and tie are now part of his inventory, which is awesome for allowing more player control in furthering the story. There are many puzzles Rosangela and Joey have to work together to solve, using their unique abilities and helping the other overcome limitations.

On my first playthrough, I did experience some frustration with getting stuck. After playing through again with the commentary, the problems with flow are probably mostly due to the major script changes that occurred during development. For example, there is one puzzle in particular that is easy to screw up the first time, and although it’s not a case of Dead Man Walking, the way to reset is so unclear that I wasn’t sure of that at first. I also get incredibly weirded out by the 8-month-old walking baby.

The jazzy sax soundtrack always sets the tone for the noir detective vibe, and it is clear from the commentary how much care, purpose, and deliberation went into the retro art style. Despite its flaws and the foreshadowing that ends up not coming to pass in the next game, I still find it a thoroughly enjoyable game that is higher in quality than many of its peers and a worthy installment in the Blackwell series.

Blackwell Deception, is a 2-D point and click adventure game.

Pros:
>Interesting Characters
>Pretty Decent Story
>Voice Acting is good
>Gameplay is simple and so is the the interface
>Graphics look great for 8bit

Cons:
>Short

Overall it is a pretty good point and click game but do not expect to much from it. If your looking for a quick and easy game to enter the point and click genre this is probally a good choice. Not most exciting point and click but good enough 5/10

The Blackwell Deception is the fourth installment of Blackwell series, and it continues to reveal more about the world beyond, alongside Rosa's possibly substantial role of guiding spirits to the next world. We have a case, a mystery and a villain. All is set to pursue the next chapter of the Legacy! The game serves as the triumphant raise of suspense for Rosa's future and a vague epilogue for Joey's ominous background. So far, this is the best game of the whole Blackwell series.

Following the events of the Blackwell Convergence, Rosa and Joey keep doing what they do best; now in a professional context. Our little girl has business cards and all: Rosangela Blackwell, Spiritual Consultant. They do not pace the streets of New York in hopes of finding a case anymore. The case comes and finds them, alongside the trouble attached, of course. Following their recent fiasco - and a particularly unlucky trip to New Jersey - Rosa receives a phone call from an old colleague she had, - back from when she was working for The Village Eye - Jeremy Sams. Apparently, Jeremy now works for The City Post as a reporter and needs Rosa's assistance to either make or break the case he's been working on. Unbeknownst to her, Rosa shall uncover a truth so grim, nothing will ever be the same. Not for her, not for Joey... not anymore.

I recall describing the previous games with certain genres in my review for the Blackwell Convergence. I'd like to keep my tradition and describe the Blackwell Deception as the season finale for your favorite TV series. It drives you to the point that you bite on your fingers, expecting for the grand climax you are about to face, then... you realize that there shall be a next season for your questions to be answered, so you are left high and dry, craving for more! The aspects of Rosa's ability, the so-far carefully shrouded past of Joey, their omnipresent yet mysterious bond, the subtext of Madeleine's intentions, the nature of our former villain, the Countess' madness, the presence of a cult tangled with supernatural forces: they are all scattered as bird crumbs for you to follow!

Our already familiar characters now completed their evolution and possess full-fledged personalities. Rosa is strong, real and persistent. She takes shots, makes calls and chases leads just like old Lauren Blackwell did. As a completely differentiating factor, she never dismisses the contents of her own heart. Nothing would make Miss Blackwell a people's person, but Rosa is still a humanitarian. When someone she cares is hurt, it gets personal. Joey, on the other hand, seems more than an omnipresent source of sarcasm and displeasure now. He cares not only for Rosa, but for many others and tries to suppress the haunting voice of his own consciousness to take the next step ahead. He gets involved in Rosa's life aside from their business, more than ever.

As far as gameplay goes, this game is the combination of all others so far. Combining clues interface is back - with Rosa's phone becoming handier - and puzzles get a bit more item oriented. With some attention to environment and some key words that people keep mentioning, you'll flow through the game. Dialogue puzzles are my favorites to tell the truth, making the people that they work on lively, real and deep. This is also the game that you use Joey to his full potential, more interactively alongside Rosa. Commentary and bloopers are joyful options that we anticipate now. Graphics are also at their best display possible for the given art style. The art used for the Void between worlds keeps getting more beautiful in each game, I wonder what Dave Gilbert's team will come up with for the last installment.

Am I creating suspense, or not? Well, this is the whole idea. This whole game is present to create the suspense needed for the last chapter of the series. Countless mysteries are coming to explanation with only the biggest of questions persist, to prepare you to the last big step: the Blackwell Epiphany, the last installment of the remarkable Blackwell series.
