Soweit, so RPG-Style.

Pretty decent puzzle platformer with JRPG combat. There are a couple quirks that make it stand out. For one thing, all the equippable items are gems that you either get from killing monsters or opening chests. All your consumables are found in chests. There is no currency and no shops. If you're the kind of person that holds on to limited items and never uses them, this could be a bit of a hassle.

There are a wide range of party members, but you can only have two in play at a time. They all get xp whether or they're not in a given fight, which is nice. Every time a character levels, it gets a flat stat bonus, in addition to a talent point you can fiddle with. Each character only has one gimmick that they focus on more or less, so you have to get used to juggling party members. Need healing? Swap in the healer. Need tanking? Swap in the tank. It's pretty painless, but takes a little getting used to.

One of the main gimmicks is that you get a fairy that moves on the screen independent of your character, either using the mouse or the right thumbstick. Using fairy juice, you can either slow enemies or regenerate health for allies, and most of the puzzles in platforming center around activating things with the fairy.

There's a world map with fast travel, but I really would have liked area maps as well, as there's a lot of stuff to collect and you can easily miss things if you don't explore thoroughly.

I enjoyed the graphics of the game, which were all beautifully hand painted watercolors. Also, all the dialogue is in rhyming verse.

All told, worth buying, but you might want to wait for a sale. It's only about 10 hours long.

Maybe it's my fault, maybe I should read the fine print on the store page, maybe then I wouldn't be writing this. Instead, I made the silly assumption that a game that I bought on Steam would be playable on Steam without much issue. Thus, I didn't check for any fine print, and I bought this beautiful RPG that had miles of positive reviews, one that had been set on wishlist for ages. Apparently, I should have bought it years ago.

Congratulations Uplay, you've made it that I cannot play this lovely looking adventure because I refuse to make an account for another game platform, especially not one that loses save files left and right and stops the Steam Cloud from fulfilling it's function. Hell, even if I did want to make an account, U-Cannot-Play has done little more than crash half the time on start-up, making it effectively useless.

Sadly, I cannot properly review the game otherwise - Ubisoft has ensured that my copy of Child of Light is all but bricked.

If you don't mind glitchy, crashing, third party launchers that may or may not destroy your save files or... function, do be my guest, but else wise? Be warned.

Child of Light is an amazing game: beautiful artwork, heart felt story, and great game-play mechanics. The world and characters come to life and captive you from very start. Each battle will have you on the edge of seat... especially the boss fights. If you have a tiny gamer who's interested in magical princesses of light and their adorable firefly companion... or perhaps you yourself are a fan of such heroes and stories, this game will be well worth every penny. Personally I have played through this game with my nieces more times than I can count on console... or at least 20+ times if memory serves me correctly since counting passed 20 is extremely difficult ;)

Well done Ubisoft Montreal, this is a masterpiece of art, sound, and design!

Basicaly a nice combination of platforming and round based and real time combats where a timelime indicates who attacks next, you can use boosts and debuffs and even interrupt casting times, so far so good,
...well the problem starts later when enemies decide to become marathon runners on the timeline or even decide to skip the casting time, wich results in you getting non-stop hits and just trying to survive until you find a small window where YOU can attack for once... and that kinda ruins the fun...

P.s: Be ware that the game comes with an Additional launcher which means you have to create an extra account, 'cause it's cool to need an additional launcher and account for something you bought on STEAM.

Child of light is a beautiful game that follows the story of Aurora from a young girl as she grows into her destiny as a young woman. I bought this game for my daughter when she was about 10yo as I wanted something suitable for her level of gaming. This game turned out to be an amazingly good choice for her.

Child of Light has elements of other games - making decisions about where to allocate skill points to level up through skill trees, crafting recipes, different types of damage, increasingly hard enemies - but with turn-based combat that lets a younger gamer proceed at her own pace. To pass through the levels you have to solve puzzles and combat enemies to get to the final battle and your destiny. Aurora is accompanied by a firefly who lights her way and guides her. Along the way she gathers other companions that will help in her quests and battles.

The art style is incredibly gorgeous and the story is well crafted and touching - it's like you are playing through a beautiful fairy tale storybook. The musical score as well is wonderful.

It is a testament to Child of Light that my daughter has played it through several times and now she is 18 she has returned to play through the story once more while she waits for university to start.

Child of Light is a timeless work of art. Recommended, especially for younger gamers.

In 2014 Ubisoft published 5 AAA games, which led to the humorous article 'Ubisoft Game: The Review' written by Tim Colwill. In short the article pokes fun at Ubisoft and these 5 AAA games for despite being from different franchises are all very similar in terms of characters, story, game play mechanics etc.

In the same year however, Ubisoft also published two indie titles, Valiant Hearts: The Great War and this one Child of Light. Despite both being both short, cheap indie games, I would take these two over any copy paste AAA title the company publishes.

Child of Light mixes a traditional turn based RPG battle system with a side scrolling exploration including platforming and puzzle solving.

When it comes to turn based battle systems, I feel like I am in the minority of people who still enjoy this style of combat. With many mainstream RPG's favouring more action based combat. However, I feel turn based combat can still be enjoyable as long as there is at least some attempt at innovation. Child of Lights innovation on the combat revolves around the ability to actively slow down enemies and speed up allies both before and during actions. This slow down speed up mechanic is further utilised by the fact that certain spells and abilities can be interrupted. This applies to both enemies and allies, so sometimes you will want to speed up ally to get their spell off quicker, other times you will want to slow down an enemy casting so you can get a perfectly timed interrupt.

Other than the combat the game boasts fantastic, music, beautiful art work on both the back drops and characters and a general feeling that passion went into its entire design, something which has become synonymous with great indie titles of which this is one.

The story takes around 12 hours to complete, adding a few more if you want collect everything. In that time you will not have to climb towers, do any stealth missions with instant failure states or look at mini map with 1000 busy work markers on it.

This is my first negative review, absolutely love this game on switch and was excited to play on PC - but it crashes every time I try to play due to Uplay/Ubisoft connect. Child of Light is lovely fairy tale with RPG elements and intuitive turn-based combat. Story is pretty decent, narrator's voice is lovely and all dialogues rhyme. All of these makes the game really unique... almost like a good fairy tale that parents used to read before bed time :) Turn-based combat is intuitive... fights are pretty easy for most of the time but there are some tougher encounters (final boss was really tough!). Child of Light was great for first ten hours but later it became a little repetitive... I felt like there was too much fighting at the end. Graphics looks great, the game has it's unique style. Child of Light is a real gem - stunning visuals, good story with fantastic narrotion - you should definitely give it a try!

A beautiful game in every way. I have only one regret: not playing it sooner.

[+]⠀What's not to love? It's got a stunning visual style, a simple but beautiful story about uniting to defeat evil and the controls are great. The combat system is original and perfectly implemented and the rhyming dialogue lines was a very good idea since the game is a fairytale at heart. I also really enjoyed the side quests, the extensive exploration (which you can continue post-game) and the delicate music. This game is a work of love and considering the year we've had, it's very heart-warming.

[-]⠀Nothing. Really.

#BEATEN - Around 10 Hours - VITA

A really well made and beautiful RPG that has the look of a watercolor painting. ALl the dialogue is in prose. A pretty unique and cool game worth a play.

Pros:
- Beautiful art style
- Characters all have unique and useful skills
- Lots of locations
- An interesting story
- Unique systems. Namely you also control a little sprite that can slow down enemy turns and manipulate specific parts of the environment.

Cons:
- A few of the bosses can be difficult, but not overly so. I only had to replay bosses a max of three times I think.

An easy recommendation.

This game is insanely good, i'm surprised it's a ubisoft game, it feels more like something you'd see from an indie publisher. This is a pretty unique platforming adventure game, which throws a major mechanic at you early on in the game, in a similar way to other platformers, but you get it for the rest of the game, and it feels amazing to play! This game is definitely worth checking out, it's a shame you have to go through the uplay launcher to play it, so no achievements on steam unfortunately yet!

Played that game with my 7 year old daughter on PC. It was cool to play it together. She controlled the princess and I the little Firefly. The fights were in rounds so we could think together which move we would do next.
The story was a little a basic fairytale. Which is beautiful illustrated,

Simply amazing!

Visual, history, gameplay, soundtrack, pick your criteria, it is going to be superb!
There's only one problem here, the Uplay app, seriously, you have no idea how I hate that awkward thing.
The combat was the star of the show hands down. At first glance seemed too simple and even unnecessary, just a generic queue for atk order, but in fact, it's so much more. This system take the strategy to a whole other level, defending is not only useful to reduce incoming damage, but also to change the characters order and avoid interruptions. Exploiting the weaknesses is crucial to succeed even against regular enemies, boss battles were a show apart, every single one of them were a delight.
Great way to spend your time and money.

Very beautiful watercolour artwork, but the story is pretty boring and the gamepley is repetitive. Child of Light is a beautiful and poetic game, with a unique fairy-tale feel to it.

Visuals & Soundtracks
This game looks so cute! The artwork looks like illustrations out of a fairy tale book. The music is so beautiful, and really conveys the sadness and melancholy of the story. Paired together, music & visuals really give you that unique vibe the game is going for.

Gameplay
The gameplay is really good, the battle system in particular is surprisingly tactical. It starts off as a classic JRPG's ATB, with characters waiting for their turn to play, and the ability to swap your teammates in-battle (think Final Fantasy 10 for those who've played it).
But to that you add the possibility of interrupting enemies before they can perform their actions, and being able to delay the ATB bar of a chosen enemy in real-time. That means you always have something to do, even when waiting for your turn to play.
Each character has a unique set of abilities that makes them better suited to dealing with a certain kind of enemy, or a certain situation, which means you'll have to use each of your teammates at the right moment to win.

Story
This is a sort of fairy tale, and the story goes hand-in-hand with the visuals and the music. All the characters speak in rhymes, which is delightful. It carries some nice themes, like what it means to grow up, and what defines a home. However, I think the story is maybe a bit too simplistic at times, especially at the end which by the way feels a little rushed. It's not a deal-breaker, more of a missed opportunity, I think.

All in all, I really recommend it! This game is something special and unique that will speak to your inner child.

This was a great starter game for the girlfriend. Its essentially a 1-player game and the 2-player just babysits and handholds.
We were able to get to the final boss after dodging and working around most of the combat. We finished all quests and sidequests but were still unable to defeat the final boss for the sole reason we were just severely underleveled. Backtracking and doing all the combats possible to level up was extremely annoying and honestly ruined this game for me.
All hope is not lost however!
I still would recommend this game even with its clunky, monotone combat system.
Child of Light delivers on its aesthetics, absolutely beautiful world building. The story is very emotional and powerful, with an outstanding script for all the characters and their worldy interactions. It is worth the buy!

When I first heard about Child of Light, it sparked my curiosity and I researched a little bit about it before purchasing the game and after defeating it once and now playing it a second time, I'm amazed. I should mention that the first time I played the game, it was on my friend's Xbox (since he wanted to try the game after I completed it) and this time I'm playing it on PC (still playing it).

The amount of care that Ubisoft had for this game shows with its breathtaking watercolor inspired backgrounds and characters, the soundtrack that sets the mood whenever you venture through a different region or going to face a boss and the story that appears so simple, but has a deceivingly deeper undertone of seriousness to it.

When exploring the world that Aurora wakes up to, it has numerous platforms and various secret hiding spots for the gamer who loves to explore every uncharted nook. The battle mechanics of the game are relatively simple to understand with its wait and plan of attack with the option to either slow down your opponents, heal your party or switching out your party members to what best suits the situation. When in crafting mode, it is easy to strengthen or mix different Occuli (the item used to add extra stats to your characters such as fire resistance, extra mana, etc.) and equip it on the characters you want to play.

I enjoyed the diverse cast of characters who joined you, the challenges you have when facing certain opponents along the way and the option to select the path which character's strengths suit your gameplay the most. Beautiful game for anyone who wants something that isn't impossible to beat and likes to explore the world around them and create materials that will aid you on your journey.

Beautiful game with a well-balanced cast of unique playable characters. If you like turn based/real time combat you'll enjoy this.

My only complaint is that you need a Uplay account to play this. It kinda makes the Steam port pointless, especially since there are no achievements or trading cards on here.

If you can get past that, this game is worth trying out at least once.

Child of Light is full of heart. The combat system is one of the most innovative turn-based combat systems I've played. The characters are lovable, the music is stellar, and the art is beautiful. 10/10 would sun-blast my enemies again

Excellent game for me to play with my four year old. She could control the little firefly and not have to worry about damage or any technical parts and just help me out and follow my directions. We played through it all together and it's our first game we've been able to beat together. Going to try Marvel Legos now!

Loved the combat and art style. Enemies can turn a little repetitive after a while, but they presented some challenge in the hardest difficulty. Story it was okay, but nothing special. Recommended for a 10hs experience (wait for sale tho)

No point of having in Steam. You still need to connect and deal with Ubisofts buggy DRM/Uplay junk to play a single player game.

Even if its a good game avoid for this horrible practice.

Super sweet story and overall good game.

A really interesting turn-based game, with incredible art and beautiful music. It's particular poetic narrative style is intriguing, I thought I'd get bored of it at some point, but I never did. It's a very fairy-tale, child-like narrative, very simple but really sweet.

I don't own any of the DLCs so I don't know how much they add to the story.

I have been a gamer from 20+ years now.
This game must NEVER be forgotten. It is a masterpiece through and through.
The music is exceptional. 10/10.
The design is if you like the style, amazing. 9/10.
The characters are very unique and each share a bit of their story loved most of them 9/10.
The story while not spectacular is very well made, it kept me interested from start to finish and made my heart melt 9/10.
The gameplay kept the core mechanic of other rpgs and added its own original way of interaction. 10/10
Challenging if you want it to be, and still somewhat of a challenge on normal. Very well balanced game.

Overall, 10/10
One of the best game I have ever had the chance to play. Truly fell in love with it.

There is nothing I dislike, so far, other than there is no way to save, you have to rely on auto saves. The artwork is beautiful and the game has a feel somewhere between a side scrolling adventure and an old school single character RPG with some fairy tale thrown in for good measure. Just what I was looking for.

Atmospheric, enlightened, sweet-to-play game. One of the most marvelous games I've ever played.
I would certainly buy a Child of Light 2. I really love metroidvania style, especially when the game is so well desingned, drawn and of course with a great sound track like that...
The music takes my breath out.

Great game overall, great characters and story, great soundtrack and great combat, but Child of Light doesn't have much replay value, at least to me. This is most likely due to the game having a fixed plot.

9/10 Would recommend.

/// This is the first review I've ever written, and i feel very excited and proud because i wrote it about a game that got me in almost everything ///

Personally i love with all my being the turn-based RPG games that keep the things simple and get more focused in the story or the art, Child of Light is one of them, with a fairy tales-theme and an amazing soundtrack (more intense in the bosses fight), the game feels very natural, there's no need to waste hours and hours grinding (problem in many others RPG´S) for level or items because the difficulty of the game doesn't requires it. Now, the game obviously isn't perfect, i bought it at the autumn sale, and honestly worth every single dollar, the DLC's in general are pretty useless, except for the golem and the Aurora´s skins ones, those are pretty decent, the other just give some gems that give you an early handicap. The game can be completed for the first time in 15 hrs maximum, i spent 38 hrs wich i used to complete the first run, the new game+ (both in expert mode), reseting several times to experiment some builds and team comps and obviously to enjoy it more, now i let you now the pros and cons:

+ The art is simply charming, with all the watercolor vibes and the smooth palette you got an unique experience
+ The sprites in general are good created, every one has an unique vibe and unique desings (The capillis for example)
- Not all the sprites are drawn in the same way and that bothers (for example Aurora is like 3d drawn, her teamates are drawn in a 2d complex way, and the other characters are like copy pasted there in 2d)
- Some sprites has minor glitch in their animation (Cordelia beast form or Aurora´s final form for example)

+ The interfaces and the game in general are simple without unnecessary information or complex mechanics
+ The game has an ability tree mechanic that spread in 3 (and short) different ways for every single character
+ Also has a power up like mechanic called oculli that consist in combine certain types of gems to upgrape an especific attribute (there's 9 differents gems so isn't difficult to understand it)

+ Has an in-game colectionables that give to the game some extra to do
- Remember this is an Ubisoft game so obviously there´s bugs: the counter of the chests in the map is very fragile, if you open a chest an inmediatly open another, the second one doesn´t enter in the chest counter and if you are a perfectionist you'll have to reset the entire game
- Same for stardust counter

= Doesn't have steam achievements
- The Uplay reward thing is buged AF so even if you complete the achievement and redeem your price or appear randomly in your game after 20 hrs or doesn´t appear

+ Has a very casual gameplay
= The difficulty isn't challenging even in expert mode is pretty soft, if you die, you apear right before the battle

+ The soundtrack is magic

I mentioned the things that i considered important, honestly the game has very cool things that it will be better if you explore yourself, so if you like the casual and simple turn-based RPG, i highly recommend this one, i hope you give it a try and let this game amaze you like it did it with me, see ya. <3

Beautiful artwork but shallow gameplay

I enjoyed my time with the game but did feel the gameplay mechanics were a little light in depth. I was expecting something along the lines of a traditional JRPG but found it was very mild in complexity. The characters are fun and the writing is great. I'd also recommend checking out the children's book they published using this artwork.

Beautiful game with a story which reminds me of fairy tales of old. Basically, it's the story of a princess which is emprisoned in her dreams and tries to escape from it. During her journey, she's granted different magical powers like Fairy wings.

The battle are pretty strategic, because good timing can lead the enemy not even being able to attack. There's also a gem crafting mechanic which allows you to buff your stats in certain regards, like stronger resistance to Earth attacks. By the way, while we are talking about elemental attacks, there is some kind of counter-system which is similar to Pokémon but not as fleshed out.

For the price which is asked, the game length is pretty good in my opinion. There's some replayability if you want to catch all achievements which are on some side quests. Sadly, an announced sequel of this game was cancelled for a reason which remains unknown as far as I know.

I would love to see more games of this kind, but apparently the market for it is kinda small I assume due to Ubisoft decision to cancel a sequel. The DLCs are not really worth it, they just give early game buffs and a different skin to the character. The other DLCs which grants you gems is not worth it all. They're just consumables you get automatically in the game, it just speeds up the experience which kinda destroys the purpose of this game, namely admiring the beautiful scenery with fun but not very difficult combats, at least on the normal difficulty.

The soundtrack is pretty good too with some calm piano and orchestral scores.

Finally, I would say that if you like casual RPG games and excellent art design, I would recommend this to you, especially on sale.
