Komaru Naegi, little sister to Makoto Naegi, has been imprisoned inside a mysterious apartment for over a year. One day, she is rescued by Byakuya Togami of Future Foundation, but the rescue is derailed by a sudden attack of hundreds of Monokumas. Komarusoon discovers that the city has been taken over by a group of children calling themselves the Warriors of Hope. Their leader, Monaca, declares that the city will be the site of a “children's paradise,” and to accomplish this, all the adults will be exterminated. Komaru teams up with Toko Fukawa to try to survive the rampaging Monokumas, escape the crafty Monokuma Kids, and uncover the secrets of the city.

Komaru and Toko's interactions with each other is so fun to watch~ I really love that this game stars those two! We get to see a new side of Toko that hopefully many of us were waiting for~
Also to get to attack Monokuma as Genocide Jack is so much fun and using the Hacking Gun is a lot of fun too~
Those jumpscares got me but when I got scared I also blasted the Monokuma's away XD

Okay.... this one was hard, because I liked a lot about this game. The gameplay was simple and the controls were good for it (I'm bad at 3rd person shooters so a plus for me), the warriors of hope were actually 3 dimensional with reasoning for their actions (except for 1 who was a real disappointment), liked the new characters that came on briefly, I liked Toko and komaru as the main characters (even if they did become annoying at times) and their dynamic especially at the end, and I liked the plot in general.

But I seriously could not get behind the oversexualisation of children. One is a SA victim yet is being sexualised for comedy in another part. There is a mini game that involves being gropped, one of the male characters spouting pedophilic garbage, and also a character having their clothes cut up when injured. It was just too much. The other Danganronpa games did sexualised things but not really the way this game did. This game really just should have been a short novel or a short anime really.

Danganronpa fans would more likely enjoy this. It just got me the wrong way even though I did enjoy most of it and couldn't look past it.

This game is fucking despicable and disgusting and if you defend it you need to seriously reevaluate your fucking relationship to media and the way you consume it because this game is awful on nearly every front. The multiple cutscene art styles clash like going between a budget anime to a high school fan MMD project, to low resolution classic stylistic animatics.

The gameplay is abyssmal, enemy AI is a fucking joke, the bullets are practically meaningless because you'll rarely run out of bullets / batteries, the puzzles for the most part are either pretty decent to laughably awful and rushed. The controls are fucked, the whole port is a disaster with visual settings just not existing, subtitles not existing.

Then there's the story, fucking hell. Some others explain it better in their reviews but the game starts out shakey already, then nosedives and flatlines at chapter 3 and never recovers. The writers think they're juggling the tones perfectly and handling the heavy topics of abuse and child molestation well but they're really fucking not.

Do not buy this game, even if you like Danganronpa, just look at the wiki instead. Fuck this game.

I'll be honest, i wish there were more Another Episode's like this. It grows the series' world in a way the killing games cant quite do since they're more about Hope vs Despair and uncovering the truth.
The monokuman machines got repetitive after a while but i still enjoyed UDG for what it was. Toko got great development that Trigger Happy Havoc couldn't give her since she wasnt a main character then

Not Spike's greatest game.. Story drags on and includes a lot of disgusting sexual content centered around children. Sometimes the jokes go too far. Komaru and Toko carries the game. gameplay is simple but it's alright ig. includes a few good puzzles and character moments. the only thing that is redeeming is the amazing music. Not missing much if you skip it.

I'd only recommend this one if you reeeally liked 1 and 2, for it still having a nice soundtrack, interesting new characters, some well-deserved development for certain returning characters, same style and overall humor.
I think it's relevant to say that I'm only giving this game a positive review because I love playing it, but it is an objectively clunky third-person shooter experience, since it launched on PSVita of all things, meaning that the port transition didn't go so smoothly for its PC version, many of my friends that played this one didn't like it, understandably.
Despite really wishing there was a sequel for this one, I feel like the change to the usual visual novel to an action shooter worked greatly with the dark theme of the series, I'm all for inovation, I wish they kept trying new things/genres with the series.
tl;dr get this if you liked 1 and 2.

Really fun game and love the story. You should at least try one of the Danganronpa games and see if they are your speed. Also If they make more games id love to see this stile of game mixed with V3 in a way.

Danganronpa Another Episode : Ultra Despair Girl is basically focus on side story of what happening in Makoto's sister, Kamoru Naegi. You can play this game after finish 1st and 2nd Danganronpa series but not the third.

The game developer have his own idea try different mechanic of Danganronpa game franchises. The game is not the same as previous two title but it's more to third person shooter game but no debate court. They did managed to do it to make it a good game but fans are arguing that this one is completely off from the Danganronpa Franchise and give less attention to fans to try it.

My own review, the game is okay and still have the same feels as Danganronpa games just different mechanic that all. I really recommend you guys to try this one because it's not that bad. I did played this faster compare to previous two Danganronpa (took 28 hours to finish it and my playtime mostly in offline mode and not depend on my review time since onlt 7 hours which is ridiculous).

7/10. It's good and I love UDG lore either.

ONLY bad thing in this game is when i'm fighting with last boss the camera always lock on the boss that make it so hard to dodge attack

I got out of my danganronpa phase pretty quickly, and the main three games really don’t hold my interest anymore. This game is actually a lot of fun, and it’s the only one I would consider replaying anytime soon. I would recommend playing with a controller though.

Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls feels like one step forward and two steps backwards. Let me elaborate.

I'll start off with the good.
First, Kodaka and his writing team really came into their own in UDG. The dialogue is a marked improvement from the first game. It turns both leads into likable characters that are easy to root for.
Along these lines, the story isn't great, but the ending is certainly a change of pace for the series.
The animated scenes are also fantastic, and ooze with style.

As far as the cons go...
The gunplay is monotonous and not very fun. You basically walk around and shoot monokumas.... and that's pretty much it. The puzzles are also a chore to get through, and not very satisfying.
Since the game is a PS Vita port, the graphics are also pretty bland, and generally stylistically inconsistent.
And the plot is honestly kinda stupid, even for Danganronpa standards.
My biggest gripe though is the moments is literal fucking pedophilia. Devs, wtf? Why were these necessary in any way?

Overall, UDG wasn't terrible, but fell short of the high standard set by the rest of the series. If you've already played DR1 & 2, this game is worth a play for its contributions to the story. But just don't expect too much.

This game is highly recommendend
-Features:
°Very well anime cutscenes
°Two female protagonists that during the story will develop a bond or friendship and yuri
°Continue the ending of the first game/anime (recommend that you either watch the anime or play the first game) thankfully this game protagonist is unaware of the events of the first game so it's good for new players to enter the Danganronpa universe with this game.
°Ball monokumas, along a different settings of enemies that will requiere the player to use shooter strategy.
-Key mechanics that will affect every player ratting of this game:
°Shooter Combat is like Resident Evil 2 or Silent Hill in terms of Shooting while the melle segments will remind you the Devil May Cry, thankfully you can upgrate your two protagonists and get better combat feature for your characters.
°The game follows the cruel Danganronpa universe and the bosses and NPCs will make you question your choises, jokes and humor can affect you unless you are ok with dark and grimm humor and lot of hearthbreaking back stories for most of the characters in this game.
°Yuri tension between the protagonists, so keep an open mind.
°The investigation of the original game is back but more on the exploration feature, no trials here but a lot of hidden story that if you miss it you will not get the intel and dialogues.
°This game will how new players the events of the first game but can potentially spoil it at the same time.
-Duration of the game:
°Game has 1 prologue, 5 chapters and 1 epilogue, along extra contents and novels that will flesh the Danganronpa universe
-World and save points:
°This game reminds a lot to the dead rising maps and saving points, the game let you explore and is recommended that you take your time and don't rush directly to the main bosses, especially if you are a new player, you will need to gather all the intel posible so you can tune it with the story
-Partner mechanic:
°You will take control of two characters and each one has strong points and weak points, so is highly recommended that you upgrate them both.
°One character is from the original game/anime so having that in your team flesh the world for new players since the other character is unaware of what happened, the relationship they bond is very especial and finding all the backstory of how the events of the first game/anime took place, conect the dots and this game will have strong ties for the danganronpa 2 and V3.
°Each character will be very usefull but you need to use them carefully as resources for each one are very scattered and scavege mechanics will be requeired, as long as upgrates.
-Bosses:
°They are good, more like Puzzle, but there are other bosses thay will be more like DMC bosses, this game really put an effort trying different boss mechanics.
°The lore and motives of the bosses reminds a lot to the Far Cry main bosses where you will feel like siding with them but at the same time feeling sick for this bosses.
°The dark humor, back story and dialogues can affect sensitive players so be aware.

FINAL REVIEW
Is an excellent game that is different from the used Danganronpa mystery trial games of investigation, this game is more a shooter survival type like Resident evil, Silent Hill, Dead rising, with a melee combat reminicent of Devil May Cry.
Even so is a good game and explores more the world universe of Danranronpa and all the loses ties of the first game, a perfect sequel that will help players to understand the next events of the Danganronpa 2 and V3, so is a very recommended game, enjoy.

This is completely different to the mainline Danganronpa Games as it is a 3rd person shooter but I recommend it if you are interested in the lore of the world. I thought it was fun to play, not the best game I have ever played, but not bad either. I really liked how they fleshed out one of the Danganronpa 1 characters. I really liked both of the playable characters in this and their interactions with each other.

If you ever had any abusive experiences as a child though just be wary when going into this. I've had a positive childhood but some of the experiences mentioned in the game even made me a bit uncomfortable. While some of the experiences mentioned appear somewhat surreal I still think it's worth bringing attention to, as people who have suffered traumatic experiences as a child might want to research the themes a bit first before diving in. I might be being overly cautious but I thought I should mention it.

(SPOILERS ARE IN THIS REVIEW) This game is much better than I expected. I am a big fan of the overall darker tone this game has. This game also takes Toko Fukawa (a character that I didn't like very much) and turned her into a very endearing and entertaining character. The personal growth that Komaru goes through is also fantastic. The only gripe I have is the kinda regressive writing. I understand that Japan is a much more socially conservative country but some of the lines are pretty gross and sexist. I'm also not a big fan of the sexualization of Kotoko. I understand that the reason she sexualizes herself is due to her abuse but it still felt pretty creepy and gross. The puzzles in this game are super fun to solve and the solutions make sense ( Except for that one birthday puzzle in chapter 4, that one sucks). Overall, very good game, and even with the existence of V3, I would still love to see a squeal to the events of this game.

I just finished this game a while ago and i reaally liked it, as expected of spike chunsoft! Even though it was smaller than the former danganronpa games it was way harder (I played all the games in normal difficulty) which in my opinion made the entire experience very unique! It generally was different than the others games, having to survive in Towa City rather than being stuck inside school grounds. After dr1 I was left with many questions that got an answer after playing this game and i found that pretty awesome, since we ourselves get to experience the terrifying world after ''The biggest, most awful, most tragic event in human history''!

Toko/Genocide Jack also got important and really amazing character development, making me love her even more now<3 Big thanks goes to Komaru for that love u girls

As expected of Spike Chunsoft the game itself is excellent, the children in this game are on a whole different level of creepy though. They make you feel uncomfortable even when you play the game. It's a great spinoff game of Danganronpa and it tells of Makato Naegi's younger sister whom you briefly see in the first danganronpa game.

Only if you reaaally want more Danganronpa. I did, so I kinda enjoyed it.
I would only recommend it to people who have played the main series and want more of the lore.

The gameplay is drastically different and even for those that might like it there are more exciting options.
You can only adjust the aim speed through abilities, but most will be accustomed to games that allow you to freely adjust this from the control options.
If you're looking for a good 3rd person shooter game I will suggest Gears of War or Vanquish.

The puzzle rooms have poor difficulty scaling and there are too many of them. They will typically make up almost half of your gameplay time, so if you don't like these you're going to be annoyed. I liked them, but just felt it was too tedious. If there was maybe half as many of those rooms they would still be comically frequent, but not nearly as annoyingly repetitive.
If you're looking for a good puzzle game I will suggest Portal, Mighty Switch Force or Puyo Puyo Tetris.

It's quite edgy as would be expected, but perhaps more so than the main series. It's as sexual as it can be without showing any actual nudity. The story takes place during a massacre so bodies are actively being piled in the streets. Depending on if a regulatory board is asking, even kids are dying.
It's easily one of the more offensive titles I've played due to it's themes & story, not so much the visuals themselves. If you're easily offended, this game is definitely not for you.
If you're looking for something like this in gameplay or looks but without the mature themes, best I can recommend is Slime Rancher. Maybe that's what you want? The gameplay in Ultra Despair Girls is somewhat unique so unfortunately that's the best equivalent I can come up with.

I bothered to get all the achievements during my second playthrough. Back-tracking through the story by chapter to find all the scrap notes, Socki comics & hidden kids were annoying achievements to earn. The hidden kids would be fine if I could go back through a level once I realize I missed one. If I missed one then I have to start the whole chapter over again because it won't let me go back in many areas, even some exits look completely open to go back through, but won't let you. To get an A rank for the chapter you will need to avoid retrying a puzzle. That means having to reload from the last save. I think it should have been allowed to retry the puzzles without penalty. The rest of the achievements seemed appropriate.

I wonder who this game was made for. Danganronpa fans are used to playing a murder mystery game series. A 3rd person puzzle action game I don't feel has much cross-over appeal with that audience. Everyone outside that fanbase will be lost on many plot details.

Pros:
- A dark entertaining story with just enough humor without breaking the tension.
- More Danganronpa lore.
- Unique action-puzzle gameplay.
- Some of the puzzles are good.

Cons:
- Have to collect & equip an ability to change your aim speed.
- The puzzle rooms are required too often and don't scale up in difficulty quick enough.
- A couple achievements are annoying to earn.
- Shirokuma.

Like many other games, my recommendation depends, but this applies here more than ever. I can only recommend this to so few people and the bad parts really stick out for me so I'm going to say 'not recommended'. However I hope you read this review in full in case you might be interested as there is still some charm here. The game undoubtedly has a lot of flaws and a lot more polish could have made this a harder decision or even lean on recommending.

Danganronpa is a series that knows how to be weird, and that's what makes it special, however. This game is so weird, it makes all of danganronpa seem tame, and family friendly in comparison. And I love it!

this game itself is ok. it's a pretty barebones shooter with some decently fun puzzle solving elements. the story is barebones and isn't super special, but it tackles some really heavy subjects and handles them with so little tact that it's jarring as hell. if you play the game you'll understand within minutes of starting it. the only real positives here are that komaru and toko have a fun dynamic, the music is as good as always, and ball monokuma is a little funny. i'd really only recommend this if you're desperate for danganronpa lore for some reason

I ended up enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. :)

Before you go into it, here's some warnings

* This game tackles some seriously heavy subjects in a variety of different ways, from child abuse to self harm to p*dophilia. Lots and lots and lots of p*dophilia. The game does a solid job of portraying child abuse and different mechanisms victims of trauma develop to cope....But one could also argue that its role in the story just exists for shock value and to create more sympathatic villains. Either way, just know that it's there.

*Danganronpa is VERY anime game series, and that comes with a lot of fanservice. UDG takes all that fanservice and cranks it up to 11. There are scenes in this game that are just straight up soft-core porn. There are more sexual references in this game than the first two combined, and it shows. You're going to be seeing the protag's underwear a lot.

If you can manage to look past those things, there really is a great game here. The art style, voice acting, and music are the best they've ever been. The two leads are awesome, their bond feels real and authentic, and their character development is just *chefs kiss*. Monaca is a more interesting and enthralling Junko, and her voice performance might be my new favorite out of all four games. The gameplay is a little slow and clunky, but it's still fun and does a good job breaking up the lengthy story. The puzzles are VERY simple but can still be fun to work through. The level design is also surprisingly really good, and every location feels unique and detailed.

It's must play for any Danganronpa fan, and definitely worth your time and money....IF you can get past the fanservice and dark themes

As an over-the-shoulder shooter, this game is subpar.
But I don't play Danganronpa games for the gameplay. I play them for the story.
In that department, this game is an excellent spin-off. The character development is touching and the expanded lore for the base series was exactly what I was hoping for.

Please note that this game should be played after Danganronpa 1 and 2

Even though Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a third person shooter and has completely different gameplay from the previous games, the developers still manage to create an innovative shooter with an amazing story.

I would definitely recommend this game to danganronpa fans and people looking for a third person shooter that breaks the mold.

I really like the Danganronpa series, and I really like the characters involved, and this includes many of the characters in this particular game. I also really enjoy the artstyle, music and atmosphere the series brings.

But I hate the gameplay of this game, it's awful. The plot however, is tolerable, and it's probably the entire reason you're interested in playing this game. In my opinion, you're better off just watching a YouTube run of this game so you can go ahead and watch the Danganronpa 3 anime with a complete picture. That's why you're here anyway right?

And it goes without saying, but if you do decide to play this game, make sure you've played the first two games before doing so, as it will spoil them otherwise. The next step after this is to watch the anime content.

It doesn't help that the price on this one is somehow about the same price as buying Danganronpa 1 and 2 together in a bundle, considering I got less than a quarter playtime out of it in comparison and I enjoyed it far less. I sincerely hope that they don't make another game like this, and that is an extremely rare thing for me to say. Avoid this at all costs, it's a cheap low-effort game with some high points but mostly a whole lot of boredom. The best thing it does is worldbuild.

I would only recommend this if you enjoy Danganronpa and want more of the story. The shooting controls like a janky RE4, but the combat isn't particularly challenging so it's not terrible. Takes place between Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, I would recommend playing this after you finish both of those.

This one one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. The controls are just downright bad, and it feels like the game play is interrupted every 5 minutes for a cutscene. The camera controls are super wonky and were the reason I died so many times in boss battles. There's also just some down right bizarre fanservice scenes that feel really uncomfortable in a game dealing with elementary school kids. Other wise the story and characters were interesting, but I'm not sure I can justify playing the game for that alone. If you're a hardcore Danganronpa fan you might feel like it's worth your 10-15 hours of time, but otherwise just go watch someone else play it on youtube if you just want to see the story.

I never thought I'd enjoy this game as much as I did. I'm glad I gave it a fair chance. As a mix between visual novel *and* third person shooter genres, (It's basically Resident Evil gameplay x Danganronpa) and it's great! In this game we get a new protagonist: Komaru Naegi, sister of Makoto Naegi from Trigger Happy Havoc. And Toko Fukawa as a support character throughout the game, being able to play as her other personality, Genocide Jack. Shoot your way through several Monokuma's in Towa City, a more open-seeming map than the numbered DR games. While still very much linear has plenty of optional routes to take as far as exploration to find plenty of missable goods! Story as usual is an excitement trip. Twists and turns that will keep you wanting to find out what happens next.

If you like the Danganronpa series and its characters, then this will be a nice addition. The story is pretty fun, although at times it does feel rather slow and not quite as compelling as the main series. The 2d graphics are quite good, but the 3d cgi is definitely not why I bought and played this game. Aside from that, I really liked the background music they played. It was very catchy indeed.

Gives an interesting insight into Toko's character! I really am starting to like her and her alter more and more as I play. I like how I can see both similarities and differences between Komaru and her brother. Also, there's more backstory about both the first and second games :)
And shooting Monokumas is always therapeutic...lol ;)

This game should be played after playing SDR2 and ideally before watching the Danganronpa 3 anime. Overall, this game was quite fun to play but isn't a necessity to the franchise. It is nothing like the main games as it does not follow the same structure. Yes, it is in the same universe but it highlights the world outside the game. Overall, if you are a fan of the Danganronpa franchise, it is worth playing - keep in mind though that the gameplay is completely different from the main games.

So, while I do recommend this game, I am doing so with some caveats.

If you are a danganronpa fan, play this for the story more than anything. It is an amazing story set briefly after the first game that adds a lot of backstory to the characters. It introduces you to all of the families(through cards about them mostly) and does so in ways that both make you chuckle and that break your heart. While it does feature one of the most insufferable characters from the first game constantly, Toko actually has some good development in this which surprised me an awful lot. It takes a while, but watching her open up more throughout the game made dealing with her at the beginning worth it.

~Editing to add this bit in because I feel it's important: The best part of the story is how it twists how you think. Without going into spoiler territory the game heavily throws at you why the kid masterminds are doing what they are doing, and it makes it very hard to feel like they're actually evil. This tearing between if they're evil for their actions, or if they're justified in them for their past came out of left field from a seemingly basic story. It was extremely well done and I applaud the writers for doing it this way. Okay edit over~

As for gameplay...it's passable. The controls can be pretty wonky at times(make sure autoaim is never on it makes things way harder) and there are a few 'Protection' sections that are very annoying, but everything else is enjoyable. The megaphone weapon is weird but it works pretty well, and the collecting feels fun albeit isn't the most rewarding thing in the world.

Artistically I enjoy it. The actual anime cutscenes are amazing, they looks just like the anime itself, and the 3D scenes while weird are still nice. My absolute biggest complaint is there is no volume option for the cutscenes. Everything else can be changed except for that, which can be offputting when you're like me and play it on quiet. Other than that its a good design, even if it is drastically different than the other games. This may be offputting to diehard fans of the gameplay/looks of the normal games , and that's understandable, but on its own this does a good job of being its own thing well.

All in all be wary that this is not a normal danganronpa game, but it's not a bad game either. I enjoyed it for expanding the universe and giving me entertainment for as long as it did.

This game is lots of fun and an obvious choice for anyone who love the Danganronpa Franchise.
It refreshing to have a game like this which is not just text based but also has 3d graphics and gameplay.
I recommend playing this after danganronpa 2 and not before.

I love this series, and this is a change of pace compared to the first 2 games which largely followed the same sort of premise--which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing--and while the story here is still pretty solid, the one thing I can not get past is the way it is controlled... it is truly awful. I am still playing through it, but it is getting tedious... having to hold down shift and W for almost the entire game just to move is NOT fun. And for some reason there seems to be an over arching lag. Unfortunately, those couple of things significantly impact the enjoyability for me, and I could not recommend this for those reasons.

Tl;dr: Only play the game if you want more lore for the Hope's peak arc, there isn't much else to play it for.

This game is what I would say is the black sheep of the Danganronpa family. This is supposed to connect the first two games together, and It does that quite well. On the other hand, there isn't much else. The main antagonists annoyed me to no end, to a point where I skipped all cutscenes with them. The main character is basically a female Makoto, which makes sense, but she barely has any other defining traits. The gameplay consists of shooting a couple slow moving monokumas, switching to genocide jack to clean up, and then moving on. There were a couple of neat mechanics that were under used as well. Bosses consist of firing at the weak point a couple times and then switching to genocide jack to beat it. My point is that the game is merely used to connect the first and second games and to give some further backstory to some characters from both games. Do not play it for the gameplay and the story, play it for the lore.

This game is what you should play if you need a break from the standard Danganronpa series. It's definitely not as... mentally taxing as the main series games. It's mainly just a fun shooter with some puzzle game elements in there. The story is great, as in all the Danganronpa games I have played, and expands on Toko and Genocide Jack if you want to know more about them. It's not as good as the main series games, but it's still pretty good and worth playing.

Criminally underrated game in the Danganronpa franchise. One of my all time favourite games in the series. Its a shame it gets so overlooked. Amazing characters, confusing asf puzzles that hurt my brain, and a fantastic storyline. Definitely worth checking out!

As much as I love Danganronpa, and as much as I love shooters, the two simply do not mix well.

The reason why Danganronpa 1 and 2 work so well is because it's a first-person visual novel. Turning Danganronpa into a third-person shooter disconnects the player from the story, and removes all sense of helplessness. Having a gun and defeating dozens, if not hundreds of Monokumas makes you feel practically invincible, which is the complete opposite of what the first 2 games aimed for. Just one Monokuma posed an immense threat in Trigger Happy Havoc, and not being equipped with any weapons or means of self defense made you feel like you are forced to ride this crazy, horrifying ride.

Plus the third-person camera makes it feel like most of the games ups and downs are happening to someone else rather than yourself. It feels more like I'm watching Komaru's story rather than experiencing it for myself, again, the opposite of the first 2 games.

The lack of body discoveries and class trials also make this game a real awkward entry into the Danganronpa franchise. Every time you would find a murder victim in the previous games it would fill you with a sense of fear, tension, and adrenaline. Excluding that from this game causes this game to lose all weight in it's narrative. And class trials would also bring similar emotions. You would go into a class trial not knowing at all who the murderer is, for you can't bring yourself to imagine any of them being guilty. But as the trial progresses you piece together the puzzle, and once again that grief sets in as you narrow down in the murderer.

These are essential parts of the Danganronpa games. They are parts that make this franchise unique, memorable and ever-so popular. So to remove them is like making a DOOM spin-off that's a Pinball Machine. It's ridiculous to change the fundamentals of a game franchise that the fanbase has already accepted as the norm.

And the cherry on top, the overall story and new characters introduced in this game are both forgettable and bland compared to previous entries. The main story is really stupid, and the main antagonists are annoying, lack depth, and are generally boring.

But hey, at least it made me fall in love with Toko... again.

I give Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls;

If you played the first 2 Danganronpas and enjoyed them, but are only interested in the gameplay, skip this and play Danganronpa V3, instead. Really you should only play this game if you are really invested into the story of Danganronpa.

Well, off to watch the Danganronpa 3 Anime, I guess.

I would only recommend this game if you are a fan of the Danganronpa series. There are some cool parts of the story and puzzles are fun, but nothing else is actually that great in the game. I would say not even Danganronpa fans should play this if it didn't have some cool parts that expand on world building.

I guess my biggest complaint about the game though has to do with some of the themes of child abuse and how they are portrayed. It really seemed the devs tried to portray it in Danganronpa's super over exaggerated style but ended up failing in some concerning ways. Instead of making the player feel bad or understand a character's motives, it felt not very serious or even goofy. In fact I would say abuse was even fetishized in some parts which made for some extremely uncomfortable scenes. I even considered just dropping the whole game just because of how poorly this was all executed.

With all this being said I would like to say that if you have not played a Danganronpa game, go back and play 1 & 2. Though they are visual novels they mix game play in without disturbing the story. The story is great and explores some dark themes, but actually good. Really kind of confuses me though how the devs did dark themes so well in 1 & 2 but failed miserably in Ultra Despair Girls.

Tl;dr : Game play and story are lack luster and should only be played if you are a fan of Danganronpa. Dark themes such as child abuse are executed poorly. If you haven't played a Danganronpa game go play 1 & 2 because this is not an accurate representation of the series.

I was not expecting to love this game as much as I did. From what I've heard the gameplay was alright/bad but the story was great, but my opinion was that the gameplay was great and the story is my favourite of any game at this point in time.

Just as a warning, this game is not for the faint of heart, even if you've played the other Danganronpa games this game is extremely dark. There are some intensely dark themes such as child abuse explored in this game and it's really uncomfortable to watch.

The shooter gameplay I can understand not really appealing to a lot of people, especially since the rest of the series is visual novels, which is a completely different genre, I can say that it's worth playing for the story alone. I truly mean it when I say the story and characters are the best part of the game and it's the best story I've experienced in a game thus far. Plus as of now, this is my favourite game, no matter how divisive other people's opinions on it are.

Do not play this before finishing the first two games. A canon side-story in the Danganronpa universe starring the sister of the first game's lead character. Third person shooter with JRPG mechanics. Soundtrack on par with the others.
