I was a teenager when the game was released. LOVED it and was probably of of my favorite of all times.
I guess when you're a certain age and with all the walkthroughs available a fingerclick away, you dont have the patience anymore for all the weird puzzles. I remember DOTT was easy. Almost 30 years later, i had no patience for this.
It is still a great game and a marvelous remake but i guess my fond memories were better than playing it today.
I recommend it and its an important game to teach all gamer generations but today i enjoy other adventure games more:
Sam & Max, Gabriel Knight 1,2, and the Dig.

A Lucasarts Point and click classic adventure. Got this game when it was released because I knew it was a sequel to maniac mansion. Bernard the nerd makes his return followed by new characters Hoagie a heavy metal roadie and Laverne a wacky medical student. The mansion and Crazy Dr. Ed and co. also are in the game of course. The three kids are stuck in different time periods and it’s up to you (and Dr. Ed) to help them stop an evil purple tentacle from taking over the world. Brings back a ton of memories of playing DOS games, definitely a classic.

....It's ok. Better than Full Throttle's remaster for sure. MOST of everything is here, plays well, no clicks pops or breaks in any of the music so great on that. However, as someone who still has a working win95 machine I can tell you exactly the bits that are missing and don't work properly, THANKFULLY it isn't many.

The intro's and by extension, the time warp swirl do not play right on new aged systems. My guess is due to refresh rates on monitors but it barely looks like it swirls anymore, numerous sound effects and areas COMPLETELY missing reverb and echo, once again the time warp sequence is a BIG example of this... there is no spacey echo on ANY of the characters voices anymore, even Edna's laugh is supposed to have an un-nerving echo to it as she disappears down the screen.

The remastered soundtrack is extremely hit and miss, as well as the new remastered sounds (the tentacles sucker sound is ATROCIOUS compared to the original, there is nothing to it, barely sounds like they are moving atall), while the older music is using a modified MT-32 soundtrack, I know it's modified because I have 2 different MT-32 synths and they both have differing soundbanks compared to this release).

I guess this one is more worth the money for sure, but as usual no time has been spent remastering it's sound and getting THAT working properly, but it isn't enough to ruin the experience entirely.

I first played this game back in the 90s as part of one of the famously great LucasArts packs (it also came with a demo of Full Throttle, and Sam and Max Hit the Road). This game is the pinnacle of point-and-click games. If you ever played Maniac Mansion, it follows some of the same mechanics (using all three characters to accomplish the task). The difficulty isn't what it was in Maniac Mansion - a first-run playthrough might take you six hours before you get the all the puzzles solved (there are some tricky dialog puzzles, like any LucasArts point-and-click). I was impressed after twenty-five years that some of the humor still holds up, and even more surprised at how much I remembered from my first attempts to beat the game at ten or eleven years old.

Added bonus, this game comes with a full playable version of Maniac Mansion as a game within the game (just go to Ed's room and use his computer).

Great game. I'm not a fan of the character design or art style, but the game still won me over. Day of the Tentacle has an interesting game mechanic that pushes it beyond the first game, Maniac Mansion. DotT is worth the money and it fits right in with the rest of this era of Lucas Arts adventure games.

Taking place about five years after the events of Maniac Mansion (1987), Day of the Tentacle has the evil Purple Tentacle trying to take over the world following an incident with toxic waste that altered him. Dr. Fred Edison, a mad scientist, plans to stop him by killing him and the good guy Green Tentacle. But Green decides to recruit help from a trio of housemates: Bernard, a stereotypical nerd, Hoagie, a roadie, and Laverne, an unhinged medical student. When Purple escapes, Dr. Fred figures the only way to stop Purple is to send the trio back in time before Purple had a chance to consume the toxic waste. However, a problem with the time machine results in Hoagie being sent 200 years into the past to early America, Laverne being sent 200 years into the future where the world is under the domination of the tentacles, and Bernard being stuck in the present. From there, they must figure out how to stop Purple's evil plans while returning Hoagie and Laverne to the present.

This game is a classic point-and-click adventure game and a sequel to 1987's Maniac Mansion. Originally released in 1993 and often hailed as one of the greatest adventure games of all time, this specific Steam release is an updated and remastered version featuring improved graphics that was released in 2016. For the purposes of this review, I played the game with the remastered graphics, though an option does exist to play it with the original, early 1990s-era pixel graphics.

To start with the artwork, I found it to be excellent in this release. The developers who updated the graphics for the modern gamer did a great job of enhancing everything while retaining its iconic colorful and cartoony appearance, much of which takes inspiration from classic American cartoons. The graphics even contribute to the game's zany premise and comedy with many sight gags.

The sound design is another excellent aspect as well. There are plenty of musical tracks to listen to during the course of the game and all of it sounds great. I was impressed with the variety such as how some of the tracks from the early America segment of the game evoke traditional American songs. In addition to the music, this game is also fully-voiced. The voice acting all around is superb. The voice actors did a great job imbuing the various characters with unique personalities from Dr. Fred's mannerisms as a stereotypical mad scientist to Laverne's bizarre speech patterns as part of her strange personality.

If the above mentioned aspects were not good enough, where this game truly shines is in the story and writing. Befitting its rather cartoony presentation, this game's writing focuses on comedy with a healthy dose of slapstick and absurdity. It is pretty obvious playing through this that the developers really tried their best to cram in as much humor as possible and I found that it worked well in this game. The game never takes itself too seriously and it contributed to my enjoyment of it. I found myself wanting to continue playing when I should have been doing something else if only to discover the next sight gags or hilarious lines of dialogue. It often makes it worth it to talk to every character and exhaust every possible option to discover more of the humor.

As a point-and-click adventure game, most of the actual gaming is puzzle solving. This includes collecting items and figuring out how to use them. Unlike some other adventure games of the era, including Maniac Mansion itself, there are no dead ends nor bad ends here. Therefore, the player can try any number of things to get through puzzles without fear of creating a no-win scenario. I did find that some trial-and-error was involved in solving puzzles as some solutions are rather unclear or obtuse. Still, I did not find any puzzle in the game to be unreasonably difficult.

Day of the Tentacle is an undeniably classic video game and a seminal work of the adventure game genre. Even if you are like me and have never played Maniac Mansion (though that game is included with Day of the Tentacle as a bonus), people that like adventure and puzzle-solving games will be sure to enjoy this with its excellent, remastered graphics, great sound design, and hilarious writing.

Day of the Tentacle is a nostalgic adventure game whose humor holds up reasonably well with time. You'll want to have played Maniac Mansion before this one, which you can do from inside this game after a few minutes. It's much less stressful than its prequel in that nothing permanently bad can happen to you, though you'll probably want to look up the random sequence of steps required in a few spots rather than be frustrated for long stretches. With that in mind, it doesn't overstay its welcome.

I have been playing Day of the Tentacle for so long now, that I can't imagine having a gaming collection without it. I originally played the game when it came out and have played it through various means over the years, this remaster easily being the best of the bunch.

Day of the Tentacle has been superbly remastered with fresh looking high definition graphics and lots of remastered audio, including voice acting and music. There has also been a change in the way the game controls. Some may think that the old way is a bit old fashioned and there for there is a new control system. It's a nice new inventory system for those young kids who can't handle things without menu's and controller support. It works very well, but isn't any better than the original. For those who liked that original design, you can still use it and with the original graphics too. All you need to do is hit F1 in the menu.

As a game, it's not the easiest of point and click games but easily one of the more amusing. The story results in three different characters being stuck in three different times in history and you're tasked with guiding them back to their original point in time. It's an interesting idea and works very well for the most part. It certainly helps that all three characters have very contrasting personalities. You've got a nerd, a oddly passive female and the third being a most excellent and chilled roadie. It's the usual pick things up and find out where they go sort of puzzles. But the twist here is that you can sent certain items over to the other characters. It can make things a bit confusing, especially for first time players. But it's quite unique and still holds up well today.

The dialogue is a highlight of the game. Each character has a very distinct personality and it really comes out in the script and voice actors work. They've been very well written and the jokes surrounding each character is very funny. I personally love playing Laverne. She comes across as quite harmless, until she comes out with certain hilarious lines. There's a darker side to her, that's for sure. The music and use of sound effects are also quite strong but it's very clearly from years gone by as no one uses audio like this in games anymore. It does sound date but doesn't reduce the overall quality, thanks to the great remastering.

I love Day of the Tentacle. It's a very unique game in the point and click genre. It has a very distinct look and style that should appeal to fans of the genre. I couldn't recommend it more, especially for the fairly low asking price. It's a classic.

A 90’s cult classic returns in remastered glory for modern enjoyment

This review contains no spoilers.

Overview

Day of the Tentacle – Remastered (DotT) is the enhanced edition of an old-school point-and-click adventure game from LucasArts. This studio is no stranger to the genre and had produced classics such as The Secret of Monkey Island. LucasArts had maintained their well-respected reputation with the release of DotT a few years later. In this game, three friends must stop an evil sentient tentacle. Just a typical normal day, right?

Story and Characters

The player controls three characters: Bernard, Laverne and Hoagie. Bernard is a stereotypical nerd, especially as portrayed by media in the nineties. Laverne is a crazy-eyed goofy girl with a heart of gold. Hoagie is a total bro and probably my favorite. Dude is totally chill and quite fond of addressing anyone and everyone as “dude”. While they may seem like a group of misfits, they’re all lovable, quirky and clearly care for each other. Each character has their own unique dialog in which their personalities shine through. Hoagie is especially hilarious with his casual demeanor toward the highly unusual, as if everything happening is no big deal. Bernard surprises me with his dialog options. He is more than just a stereotypical nerd; you can play him as a total clown if you want to. Laverne tends to think outside the box, even for a point-and-click game. She has a very memorable and silly puzzle which really exercises her imagination as she makes use of the most odd combination of items. I also like that she has a soft spot for animals.

As for the story – the characters must all come together to defeat a sentient tentacle who is appropriately named Purple Tentacle. It’s totally a silly premise and the game knows it. But damn, does it own it and make it work. I mean, it is called Day of the Tentacle. You got to expect some tentacles and other zaniness, right? What a crazy day the protagonists get themselves into – it is just full of surprises.

Gameplay

The player only controls one of the three friends at a time. They click around the screen on any object they can discover. Otherwise, they may click on the ground to maneuver the currently controlled character or progress to the next screen. They may then send any of the items they claimed to either of their companions not currently controlled. It is up to the player to pick up on hints through dialog and visual cues and piece together what must be done to progress. Really, the entire game is a collection of interconnecting puzzles.

All of the characters have challenges to overcome and some of the puzzles can really exercise the player’s brain. Many are also rather humorous in nature, which is a plus, especially anything centered around Hoagie’s interactions with other characters. Most of the puzzles require transferring items from one playable character to another in order to produce a desired result. For example, Hoagie may find an item but the player may determine he has no use for it. Instead the player can have him send it to Laverne to utilize. It sounds tedious, but item transfer is actually rather quick. Thankfully, it is as simple as dragging items over a portrait of a character rather than walking all the way back to any specific drop-off location.

There are more than just objects to interact with. Plenty of colorful characters are scattered throughout the game for all three playable characters to converse with. Such non-playable characters (NPCs) are often the key to producing new objects to interact with. Otherwise, they may also assist in progression through an event or new scene. There is also plenty of humorous fluff giving a lot of life into the game. Dialog is hands down the best part of this game. Even though the jokes are from 1993, they still hold up today and do not heavily rely on pop cultural references of the time. Anyways, when the player interacts with another character they are given a menu of responses or questions to select from. Once chosen, the character delivers the selected line and the NPC then responds in kind. Often, the character provides humorous commentary or berates the player for asking something stupid and trivial. It’s pretty funny. Only certain conversations and options are required to complete the game. Really, it’s quite fun to purposefully choose incorrect options or just irritate NPCs with a barrage of questions until they refuse to talk to you anymore. I swear I don’t do that in real life.

Presentation

Smooth cartoon graphics replace the original’s pixelated artwork. The style works seamlessly with the zany atmosphere of the game and the comical tone throughout the narrative. All sorts of weird objects are scattered about each screen. Everything is drawn super clear – I never once questioned what an object was supposed to be.

Every piece of dialog is voice acted along with optional subtitles. As someone with hearing difficulties, I always greatly appreciate the closed captions. Though, the voice work was well done and I did not always need the subtitles to follow along. Each character sounds quite distinct and the audio is crystal clear. The standout in my opinion is Hoagie and his excellent sarcastic mannerisms.

I don’t quite remember all the music so it doesn’t stand out too much. However, I do distinctly remember at least two tracks. One is an extremely loud rock track – loud enough to shake the house. Literally. It’s totally headbanging. The other was a theme that played for a NPC that was just so fitting I could not help but grin from ear to ear.

Graphics and sound both still hold up very well in this remastered edition. The upgraded art is most definitely an upgrade from the original; it is so much cleaner.

Specs

The original game may be from 1993, but the remastered edition is relatively modern. The game shouldn’t be too demanding on a PC. It’s just an enhanced version of an old classic. That said, I do still run Windows 7 and can confirm the game works fine on the system.

Operating System: Windows 7
Processor (CPU): Intel Core i5-3570K CPU @3.40GHz
Graphics Card (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
Memory (RAM) 16 GB

Summary

DotT is a bit expensive at fifteen dollars for a three to six hour game, so I would suggest to wait for a sale. However, it’s a beloved cult classic for good reason. I have no real complaint about the game – the remaster does a great job bringing it into the modern age. The writing and jokes are timeless and do not date the game – it’s super funny and a good kind of weird. Puzzles seem appropriate for a general audience. They aren’t so impossible that only an adult could solve; but they are also not so simple that a young kid would fly through the game at record speed. There will be some brain teasing. Most importantly, there’s a ton of fun along the journey with tons of humor abound.

Recommended - but overall I would say it's not one of the best LucasArts point and click games. I was actually a bit disappointed after playing it. I admit my first foray into the genre was Grim Fandango (when first released) and Monkey Island 2 and felt this was weaker, but in terms of the story and humour. The puzzles are a bit more straight forward (for the most part) than the Monkey Island games and it is quite a bit shorter. It also removes the possibility of character deaths.

I did have this on Steam for years before playing due to all the technical issues when it was first released. I would definitely recommend this for fans of the genre but would suggest the Monkey Island games first, which some may think odd given that this was generally considered (at the time) as superior to Monkey Island 2.

Its truely one of the best classics ever. Even if only oldschool gamers know the worth of this masterpiece.

Good for Retro Gamers, Strange Game Lovers and Achievement Hunter/ Card Collectors.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is the re-release of the cult classic point and click adventure game from LucasArts.

Story:

Set 5 years after the events of Maniac Mansion, the purple tentacle drinks some sludge from a river next to Dr. Fred's Lab, grows arms, his intelligence increases and he plans on taking over the world. A group of friends Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne, get a call from green tentacle about his brothers plans and set out to stop his plan of world domination.

Day of the Tentacle plot is absurd, but it's also insanely hilarious and charming to say the least. the writing is top notch and every character you meet is weird, crazy and absolutely hilarious. You can definitely see the reason why when talking about the funniest games of all times, Day of the Tentacle always comes up. The writing is top notch and while there are jokes that don't land, there's always one that will come up soon that will land.

Graphics:

The remaster cleans up the original games low resolution art style and from a pixel-y look, it looks like a cartoon from the 90's and since I absolutely adore that style, I love the art style of Day of the Tentacle. It's such a good looking game, all the colors are bright and pop out at you, it's a really eye pleasing game. Each environment is good looking and it's fun to explore and look around, there's a ton of stuff to see and do.

The character designs are also really good, they are simplistic, but everyone has such a distinct look, which is something I really appreciate. For some this new art style might be a bit too much, but don't fear, you also have an option to revert to the classic look of the game, which awesome for someone like that never got to experience the original version.

Audio:

The audio is also cleaned up and sounds much clearer than the original. The original, had this very Lo-Fi sound which was common for the time, so the music and voice acting was cleaned up for the remaster. There's nothing wrong with the new one, but I really prefer the original version of the audio as it's really much more appealing to me, since I played a ton of 90's adventure games. But again if you prefer it, there is an option to turn the audio back to the original version by playing the classic version of the game.

The voice acting is great, everyone does a great job with their characters. They really nail the crazy characters, like a demented med student, boneheaded rock dude and stereotypical nerd. Even the side characters are voiced incredibly well so that was awesome to hear, since like most 90's adventure games, the voice acting does not stand the test of time.

Gameplay:

Day of the Tentacle is pretty stock standard Point and Click adventure game. Walk around environments, pick up items, talk to characters and solve puzzles. I absolutely adore the genre, it's easily in my top three of favorite genres, however I always had a bone to pick with 90's adventure games, simply for the cryptic puzzles most of them have and sadly Day of the Tentacle is no exception.

A lot of the puzzles are incredibly fun to solve, albeit they are without a doubt leaning on the crazier side, it almost requires to adapt to the games crazy type of thinking to be able to solve the puzzles and I'll admit a lot of them are easy given the context of the story at that particular moment, however a lot of the time the puzzles are really cryptic, considering there's three timelines for you to go through. Each character is stuck in three different points in time and have to send items to each other to help solve puzzles, which immediately makes it much more complex to figure out who needs what, so it requires you to go around the environments and think who might need what from your inventory.

One thing that I have to mention is that this game is a package that includes multiple games for you to play. It includes Maniac Mansion, the original version of Day of the Tentacle and the remastered version of the game. I really liked the fact that I had the ability to play the original version as well as the new one to experience the game like it was in the 90's with the massive HUD that was common to the genre and not to mention play Maniac Mansion.

Verdict:

Day of the Tentacle is a great adventure game, that I have no trouble recommending to anyone that is even remotely a fan of the genre, this game is simply amazing. It's hilarious, tons of fun and a really cheerful game, that I had a blast going through. Even if you don't like the genre, I still suggest checking out Day of the Tentacle.

Final Rating:
9/10

Pros:
+ Hilarious story and writing
+ Great art style
+ Includes original version of the game for those that don't like the remastered version
+ Some fun puzzles....

Cons:
- ....But quite a few cryptic ones too

Just as good as I remembered from 1993. I was 14 back then :-). Loads of disks to install it from on my dad's 486. Most of the puzzles are really clever and funny (maybe one or two were a bit frustrating). One of LucasArts' best.

Day of the Tentacle a classic from what I consider the golden age of adventure games, and this gussied up remaster is probably the best way to experience it. Just keep in mind that, as is typical of adventure games of that era, some of the puzzles operate on bizarre moon-logic that you'd never guess in a million years without a walkthrough, so expect to need to consult a guide.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is a classic old-school LucasArts adventure game that is a must play of all adventure game fans! You'll be playing as 3 different characters in the Past, Present and in the Future to stop the Evil Purple Tentacle! This game is a bit more difficult than other LucasArts adventure games with lots of items, different options and some obscure puzzles. The game has a good story, awesome music, sound and gameplay, highly recommended! I love the nostalgic feeling and the Remastered version retains all of it. Plus, Maniac Mansion is included within the game!

Presentation
Day of the Tentacle Remastered is an overhaul of 1993's LucasArts classic, bringing this almost 3 decades old game to modern hardware with graphical and control improvements while still keeping the appeal and humor of the original untouched, something that is still worth experiencing today. If you've never played or heard of Day of the Tentacle, the original game itself is a sequel to 1987's Maniac Mansion which follows Bernard Bernoulli and his friends Hoagie and Laverne as they attempt to stop the world from being taken over by an evil tentacle. As the tentacle has already set his world domination plans in motion the trio decides to help Dr. Fred Edison, a scientist responsible for the creation of the tentacles, by going back in time to the day before it happens in order to stop it. As that being a success wouldn't set off the premise for an interesting plot spanning more than 5 minutes, the time machine malfunctions sending each character 200 years apart in time from one another, leaving Hoagie stuck in the past during the time of the US' founding fathers and sending Laverne 200 years into the future in a world where tentacles have become the dominant species and humans have been downgraded to being their pets, while leaving Bernard in the present.

By doing this the game spans three different timelines all of which take place in the same location, Dr Fred's mansion, which as you will find out is used for various things in the past and future depending on who inhabited it, but as it is the same location doing different things in one timeline will affect the outcome in another and based on that the game creates intriguing puzzles that require you to send items back and forth in time. Once you get past the introduction you will be able to switch between characters at will and while each timeline has puzzles of its own, many of them require you to pass items between characters using the Chron-o-Johns, which are toilets with the ability to transport items between timelines, allowing Bernard to send items to Hoagie or Laverne and the same thing in reverse for those characters. Each character has a quirky personality that fits the humorous tone of the game perfectly and sets up the stage for many jokes and references which are still funny and relevant today despite the game's age. There is a little bit of humor infused into every part of this game starting with dialogue that even though doesn't influence the outcome of conversations in any way, allows you to respond in various ways and ask other side characters outrageous questions that often lead to funny punchlines.

Gameplay
The interaction system has various options depending on the item you click on, as you can close and open doors, pull or push objects or more basic options like looking and using which are available on most items, but despite the many options you have when clicking on an object that is actually not the part that makes Day of the Tentacles' puzzles confusing because they often make sense from an approach perspective, instead the problem comes from the large variety of items that you can gather in each character's inventory and have to find a use for later on, but remember that you can send items between characters, so picking up an item with one character in one timeline doesn't necessarily mean you will use it there, so you never quite know what is supposed to be used where especially because just like any other early LucasArts games item interactions are often illogical. This is once again not a problem for people who have played the game previously or enjoy this constant exploration aspect for your next movement that clicks, but it will likely be a problem for players who aren't used to this methodology in game design and the remaster doesn't do anything to address that issue, which could've been fixed with a hint system. Even if you are generally good at puzzle games you will most likely end up looking up a guide at some point because the interactions required to progress forward are always something you wouldn't normally think of and the fact that you never know which timeline has to make the next move expands on that problem with more options than you might have the patience to try out.

Unlike some other games in the LucasArts portfolio, Day of the Tentacle never really had camera issues because despite using the same technique and camera system as some of the other titles, the scenes in this game are small in scale, with each room in the mansion being a different scene that you will transition to when you walk through a door, so the action feels smooth and fluid and passing items between characters is easily done using a single menu that opens up your entire inventory which has replaced the chaotic text based system of the original, allowing you to drag and drop items to the other character's icons to the right of the menu in order to send them.

Graphics
The graphics have been drastically improved, showcasing the true artistic direction the game was originally going for, but was limited by the early 90s hardware and if you want to compare there's also an option to switch between the remastered version and the original, which gives you a nice perspective on how modern non-pixelated design has such a big impact on the look of the game without omitting anything from what made the original so unique. While the characters and scenery have been reworked into something incredible the effects have received a somehow superficial overhaul with smoke effects for example looking better than the original, but still a bit off compared to the standard in modern visual effects.

Audio
All of the original actors are still here with Denny Delk taking on the roles of Hoagie, the tentacles and George Washington, while Jane Jacobs takes on the role of Laverne and Richard Sanders plays the role of Bernard and even though they haven't rerecorded their lines for the remaster, the work Double Fine has done on the audio side is enough to bring their voice work up to modern standards, but don't expect anything fancy like Dolby Digital or spatial audio. The soundtrack still hits the same highs it did back in '93, but just like everything else the tunes have been reworked to come as close as possible to modern standards; on the other side the effects range in quality, some seem to have been replaced or reworked while others seem neglected, but it's always something minor like the sound of a drawer opening.

Extras
If you knew what you were doing from top to bottom you could finish this game in less than 4 hours, but if you've never played this before and want to go through it without a guide you could spend much more than that just trying different item combinations in order to move forward and even with that in mind you might still give up at some point and look up a walkthrough regardless. There are some extras included with the remaster such as concept art and developer commentary, but those are mostly for fans of the original game who want to find out more about the game's development.

Verdict
Day of the Tentacle Remaster is an amazing redesign of the 1993 classic which still stands tall today in terms of jokes and character design, but has been completely obliterated by the passage of time in terms of gameplay as players nowadays are used to always knowing what the objective is, something that may come as hurdle for anyone looking to get into this game now, but if you don't mind using a guide or spending many hours looking around trying different combinations, this game is still worth it for the humor and characters alone.

I guess I'm getting old. I picked up the remastered version of Day Of The Tentacle during the summer sales and realised it's been 27 years since I bought the original version of this game. It's at least 25 years ago since I last played the original but when I launched the game I still remembered all the intro dialogues. The game is even funnier than I remembered, mostly because I didn't get all the jokes and historical references back in the day.

Day Of The Tentacle is a classic point and click adventure game with a great story, wacky humour and lots of time travel. When they try to stop a megalomaniac tentacle that is trying to take over the world, three friends are separated in time by a malfunctioning time machine. One character is sent back 200 years in the past, one remains in the present while the third one ends up 200 years in the future. The puzzles are very cleverly designed and quite a few of them rely on the whole time travel aspect of the story.

This is actually a sequel to 1987's Maniac Mansion but apart from a couple of microwave and hamster jokes, you don't really need to know what happened in the first game in order to enjoy this sequel. However, if you are eager to learn what did happen, you can always play Maniac Mansion as a game-within-a-game. Being able to play the first game on a computer that you find somewhere in the sequel to that game is exactly the kind of thing that set this game apart from the competition more than two and a half decades ago.

I really enjoyed playing this game again after all this time. The graphics were state of the art back then but have been completely redrawn for this remastered version. As with most (if not all) remastered LucasArts games, you can switch between the original and remastered graphics, which is a nice bonus.

If you've never played this game but you enjoy point and click adventures, go buy this game. You won't regret it.
If you did play the original game but you haven't played the remastered version yet, go buy it as well. You won't regret it either.

A classic point-and-click advenure remastered to look great on today's hardware. Great humor and lots of funny references to the real world. You get to play three different characters who are operating in three different time periods--an interesting twist--and have very different personalities. You can even find the original Maniac Mansion to play for a nostalgia bonus within this game. Great story and interesting puzzles. Overall, a must-have whether you played it back in the day or not...Recommended 9/10.

Day of the Tentacle is among my favourite P&C adventures from Lucasarts. I love the art style, I love the whacky protagonists (especially Laverne, she's a treasure) and I love the idea of having 3 different timelines to play with.

The puzzles aren't something impossible to figure out, but I wouldn't say that they're obvious. They're a good, balanced challenge.

What we get in this remastered version is higher quality sound and 16:9 cartoon-y art, instead of the original pixelated 4:3. The original was already stellar, so this remaster is nice, but not revolutionary.

It's a game I'd recommend to anyone, especially to those who like P&C adventure games.

[h1]Thanks to the timeless quality of the writing, Day of the Tentacle remains as enjoyable today as it was when first released over twenty years ago. Faithfulness to the original art design is reflected in every lovingly-drawn line and hue of the gorgeous graphical presentation, and the zany humor is consistently spot-on.

New players should be aware that the leaps in logic can make a few of the puzzles very difficult, but the witty wisecracks keep the search for solutions tremendously entertaining.

A nice sequel from Maniac Mansion, the tentacles and the slightly deranged doctor are in this game, and some new characters as well. The mansion is now a hotel with some peculiar guests that only LucasArts can make. The story is entertaining from beginning to the very end, a prime example of what a good script should be.

Graphics can be turned into pixel mode, but the modernized art on this game just made it suit better with the crazy plot and characters. There some details with some easter eggs along the game, so pay attention to some pictures on the wall, it was fun to see some references from other games and movies.

Music got a better remaster version, and the sound effects follow the same ones from the original game, which I liked, it gave me the nostalgia feel. NPCs voice acting are very good, the sarcasm of some characters and the dead-pan humour was well played.

It is one the best games of point-and-click adventure from LucasArts, I highly recommend buying it and take your time to see all the details and have fun with the great writing of the story.

TL;DR - One of the best (and funniest) point 'n click adventure games from the most productive era of Lucas Arts.

At Length - This is a true classic in the point 'n click adventure game canon right next to the Secret of Monkey Island. A sequel to the OG Maniac Mansion done in the updated style of the 90s and one of the main reasons Tim Schafer, and now Double Fine is even a thing. This port works really well at bringing the experience to modern PCs with updated visuals for higher resolution monitors and some achievements to help push your playthrough into some interesting directions you might not have realized existed.

All in all, it's a simple package. But there's good value since Day of the Tentacle is downright hilarious, the puzzles are pretty forgiving but still engaging, and if you press into the game a bit, you also get the OG Maniac Mansion as a bonus, just like you always did. Hard not to recommend to anyone who likes humor.

Which, is . . . everyone? I hope.

This game (and Maniac Mansion) has been somewhat of an obsession for me since I was old enough to play computer games in the mid-90s. My neighbors had the copy of Maniac Mansion before we even had a computer (my parents were weird), and even if we did have one I doubt they would've bought the game. Eventually as I grew up, my brother supplied me with a plethora of games, including Day of the Tentacle. Which I'm sure most know actually has the full Maniac Mansion game as an Easter egg inside of Day of the Tentacle. That said, I've probably played Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle more than any other computer game I've ever owned.

Maniac Mansion came out in 1987, and Day of the Tentacle came out in 1993, but was later remastered (this version). With that being said, the game play is a little more challenging than today's puzzle type computer games because there was not necessarily several ways to progress through the game, and you had to do specific things in a specific order sometimes. However, that doesn't mean these days you can't get a little help from a walkthrough ;-)

The sense of humor in the game is somewhat...rare, but hysterical. The art style is fantastic, but that may be in the eye of the beholder. It definitely appeals to me. It may be my bias talking, from said obsession since I was a kid, but I genuinely do love this game and I would recommend it to anyone who likes The Cave or Thimbleweed Park, etc. because they are incredibly similar and fun games to play.

Explanation to a couple of topic reviews.
1. Graphics - I rated as high as I did due to comparing it to the original dos game, the remastered version offers way more beautiful vibrant colors and shading then the original.
2. Game time - Flash games in general do not really last excessively long but everything can be done in this game including All achievements in under 10 hours.

When I was a kid, my uncle bought me a LucasArts game pack. It was an incredible gift with a plethora of games, one of them was this one. It had me fully immersed, attempting to figure out the puzzles this wacky and bizarre game had to offer. I had never played Maniac Mansion, but that didn't prevent me from being fully engrossed in the story and characters.

I'd spend hours trying to figure out how to progress and there was no guides online, and the game steers away from common sense with it's hilarious and strange puzzles. It was one of the most satisfying feelings eventually figuring out something and I got to experience it multiple times.

I can't comment on what it would feel like for someone brand new coming in to play this game, as I knew how to do everything from memory. But it's High Definition rendition made me feel nostalgic, to the point where I called my parents to see if they'd kept it in my old stuff.

10/10 Would have paid double.

A true relic from the past, one of the funniest game ever. Great story, hilarious characters, nice artwork, perfect voice acting, very original and creative in many ways. It's a must-play for comedy and adventure lovers. Some puzzles are hard though, I had to use the walkthrough for the second half of the game.

This game should not be missing in any serious collection!

DOTT happens to be the first video game I ever played back in 1993 when I was just 9 years old! I remember how fascinated I was about the fact that I was able to interact with the characters for the first time and by doing so proceeding the story step by step. This was a whole new world to me. I also recall myself laughing sitting infront of the screen of my fathers first personal computer that was running on Windows 3.1 with 8MB of RAM and a hard drive with 200MB capacity. Don't get me wrong here, I was not laughing about the system specs, because this system was the bomb back in the days! I was laughing because of how funny and entertaining the story was and how rediculously funny the puzzles where which I was able to solve by giving absurd commands to the characters.

When I saw that the game was remastered I was sceptical at first, because the game was pretty amazing already when it first came out and the visual style is still beautiful until this day. But when I saw how respectful the developers proceeded to preserve the essence of the game by just transforming it to be a little bit more polished without changing the spirit of the game, I had so much fun again today and I got a bit nostalgic when I started to remember some of the combinations one has to find out to proceed in the game. This game is not only beautiful, funny and surprisingly intelligent but very well executed and was way ahead of its time as it is a timeless master piece today! I am looking forward to share this wonderful game with my son some day so he can hopefully have the same experience when he gets old enough to play.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in the making of the orignal game and all the developers regarding the remake of it.

Day of the Tentacle; a great traditional point & click adventure with a couple of fun jokes to boot.

This remaster improves on all tech levels whilst still retaining the charm of the original. Great Cartoon Style Graphics, Improved sound quality and overall better quality of life enchancements (e.g. U.I & Character Action Menu).

The story of the game is unaltered with the nice addition of developers commentary. The story is about Purple tentacle drinking radiated slug which gives him enhanced intelligence, arms and desire to rule the world. It's up to Bernard, Laverne & Hoagie to all work together throughout different time periods to prevent Purple from achieving world domination.

I Highly recommend this game to anyone who likes story heavy games, point & click adventures or anything Luca-Arts or Double Fine Studios makes.
