Sometimes a game or movie takes time to build momentum and become a classic. Unfortunately, this was the fate of the Dead Synchronicity duology (technically a trilogy).

The first part was funded in a kickstarter campaign and a lot of the same critics who glorified it ended up turning on the final release. Why? Simply because they hadn't expected the ending that should have been obvious. As a result, Daedalic refused to publish a sequel and the project was shelved indefinitely. A text adventure prequel had also been planned but was likewise shelved.

But that doesn't mean you should avoid this game by any means. It's an excellent point-and-click adventure which has one path with a little space for deviation (but nothing that affects the story itself). The world you wake up in is brutal, with the grass always seeming to be greener (or at least less brown) on the other side. There's a lot of mystery involved, the music is good, the story is great, and there's a lot of classic frustration in how to use items (that thankfully aren't too difficult to figure out).

One point that must be brought up: The gate screen and main city screen both scroll horizontally. If you don't know this, you might find yourself stuck for hours trying to figure out where to go next. But a most scenes will either fit on the screen or tile up like the frames in a comic book or photo album.

The artwork may be off-putting to people who didn't grow up in the Great Days of Lucas Arts, and some of the voice acting is intentionally hokey. But these are things us old adventure gamers really appreciate and honour the days when adventure was king (before Myst nearly destroyed the genre). There's a lot to live, and getting the achievements can be fun because it they require you to think outside the box and make mistakes.

It's sad that we may never get the rest of the story, but perhaps one day some of the original Devs will bring out Part 2 on their own dime, especially now that games are almost exclusively digital releases. The more people who give this game a go, the better our chances of stopping the franchise's own Dead Synchronicity. And even if that sequel never happens, this is a game well worth your time.

Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today

Dead Synchronicity is a point-click adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic future.

The first episode, Tomorrow Comes Today, is set in chaos, where there is an epidemic that threatens humanity, all energy sources depleted, and all communication destroyed.

In the game, we control a character named Michael, who opens his eyes in a world on the verge of extinction and remembers nothing but meaningless words that circulate in his mind.

We dive into a challenging adventure with our character and try to solve the events that led to the threshold of extinction.

Dead Synchronicity creates a highly original visuality with an expressionist style. Also, it deserves praise for its art design.

The game combines a balanced integration with adventure game mechanics and places the classic adventure game experience in a dark theme.

And so it stands out from the old-fashioned adventure games.

Dead Synchronicity is a game that is above specific standards and worth playing.

Anyone who likes adventure games should try it.

In terms of pure gameplay, Dead Synchronicity is a perfectly standard point-and-click adventure elevated to something more by its unrelentingly bleak setting of a post-apocalyptic hellscape in which a mysterious phenomenon has led to technological and societal collapse, and yet portends something somehow worse. The creators' passion shines throughout, with the story being perfectly supported by the expressionistic art style and dark, moody soundtrack, which ranges from somber to jarring, as appropriate. Voice acting features a peculiar mishmash of disparate accents, a strange choice but the disorienting effect ultimately works to the game's advantage. The achievement names pay homage to a number of the developers' inspirations, and you can certainly feel those influences here and there, but impressively, Dead Synchronicity never feels overly derivative. While it's unfortunate that this intended series may never see a conclusion due to sales underperforming, and the game does end on one doozy of a cliffhanger, I'm quite grateful to have had at least taken this brief but memorable jaunt through the brothers' Oliván brutal New World.

There's a few things wrong with this game. How many times at the beginning of the game does developer think I need to experience the time-warp animation, including the same dialogue? That got old very quickly, although it was in my case certainly worsened by aimlessly wandering about trying to get out of the camp due to having missed the fact that I could go up to the house on the mound. Which, though, was then the second worst thing at that point: another area being available being non-obvious at multiple points in the game.

Yet I quite recommend this game to (mature) point & click fans, even if not at current full price; latter would have needed a more rounded end rather than this being more or less explicitly a mere first season. The game has a for videogame-standards surprisingly mature and interesting storyline; is quite original in that sense and has good, fitting graphics as well as sound and music. Will certainly be playing the sequel if/when it comes out.

The Neverending Story

This game seemed to have everything I needed for enjoying it: A point&click adventure, published by Daedalic Entertainment, with nice art in a dystopian world! And developed by a Spanish studio!

The best:
- The Achivement’s names!
- The music was unexpectedly good!
-Cards!

The good:
- The story was quite interesting and well developed.
- I must admit that even if I don’t personally like the style, the graphics are nice.
- English voices were good.

The bad:
- Simplicity. Most of the time you take an object and use it right after. There are almost no object combinations. Not many clue hiding dialogs.

The worst:
- THE END? Or the lack of it. I hated it when it happened in Syberia I, also with Runaway II. A story needs a beginning, development and an ENDING. If not, it is a scam. Period. And this game, like the previously mentioned ones, it gives the feeling of unplanned ending (“let’s cut here and we will see...”). It is not mentioned anywhere that this is Chapter1 of a collection. Several years later, there is no second part. Can I recommend it? No.

I got the game in a really good offer and I cannot complain of the value. But it doesn’t worth it’s “normal” price.

Information / Review English

Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today is an adventure game developed by Fictiorama Studios.

Gameplay / Story

Protagonist Michael has no idea who he is when he wakes up in a musty trailer. A guy named Rod explains to us that the world as we know it no longer exists and he saved us. In return, he asks us to find a medicine for his sick son. Outside, we first have to find our way in the harsh reality. Because of course the drug is not ready in the next best bucket. On our journey we trudge through a littered refugee camp, a destroyed city and other diverse and interesting locations that shouldn't be spoiled.

On his journey through the wasteland I meet many tortured souls. Among them are a discouraged nurse, a traumatized prostitute who has fled into an infantile fantasy world or a scientist who is trying to track down the phenomenon behind the disaster. The latter has to work covertly among all the power-obsessed security forces and sends Michael on a mission as well. Of course, some experiences also relate to the protagonist's old life.

Pro

+ unspent surreal apocalyptic scenario
+ depressing atmosphere is captured well
+ interesting characters
+ some really good puzzles
+ matching music
+ Achievements and trading cards

Contra

- angular and low-detail figures
- minimalistic animations

Conclusion

Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today offers you a surreal and merciless end times adventure with many dangers.

Information / Review Deutsch

Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today ist ein Abenteuerspiel, welches von Fictiorama Studios entwickelt wurde.

Gameplay / Geschichte

Almost an hour in, and so uninterested I don't know if I will go back in.
Not really a game as much as a story. The few times there appeared to be options, it was an illusion. Nothing you do seems to change anything, maybe that changes deeper in, but I feel a game needs to make a good firs impression, this one failed.
The art is interesting, the story less so. You have amnesia, shocker, you wake up to find you are now in a post-apocalyptic world, that you may have had some part in creating. There is some mysterious disease. Pretty standard fare.
The complete lack of agency in the part of the player ruins it for me though. If you want a graphic story of sorts, this might be a good one, if you want a game, avoid, even on sale.

Story is good, art is good, voice acting could be better. Overall not bad for a point n click. BUT IT HAS NO ENDING. Imagine reading a good book, sure, not a masterpiece, but when you're nearly done you notice someone torn the last 50~100 pages. That's how this game felt.

Short and straightforward United States in 2020 simulator. You awaken in a concentration camp, witness numerous acts of police brutality and there is a deadly pandemic going on. The voice acting is lacking in spots, but the unique artwork and music make up for it. This is also the best example of clever achievements in a point and click I have ever seen. It is really easy to get tired of how truly bleak, dark, depressing and hopeless the setting is - the game is gloomy and does not have a silver lining anywhere, but the game conveys that bleakness perfectly.
The game cuts off abruptly and there is currently no chance for a sequel, but what is there is thought through and well written.

this game has a good story (but story unfinished), nice character with nice voice actor but puzzles are senseless. i mean without a guide you can never imagine some of them (maybe you can find randomly but not with logic). because senseless. also achievement's not senseless but you can't either imagine most of them. you need a guide again. i encountered a few bugs but it's okay. i played point-click games. this one have some gameplay problems.

Yes, with a but, don't expect to have any resolution to the story since there is not a second game. I enjoyed this game, but make no mistake it is very dark especially in the current climate. The puzzles are pretty logical and the voice acting is ok, I wouldn't say great, but def. not bad. The art style is beautiful and fits with the atmosphere and overall mood of the game. I would suggest getting on sale, but not a bad way to spend a day.

An interesting adventure game with an interesting story. I've had some issues with access to some places not being obvious (for e.g. I couldn't get to the roof top, read the walk through and noticed that I've just missed the location where the icon changes to a door...) and towards the end there are some situations where you get the feeling that puzzles don't make sense and are built in a way for you to randomly try until you click the right thing... But overall I really enjoyed the story, the graphics and the overall experience so I highly recommend this game to everyone who likes dystopian stories and enjoys playing games for the sake of the story.

I'd give this a 3/5.
Something made me disappointed with the ending. It seemd so long and as if this was a good ending for a different game. Maybe, it just wasn't what I expected, and that's because I have mixed feelings but it is what it is.
I enjoyed the characters, the artstyle and the story, tho.
