Über das Spiel

Explore the dark alleys of Harbor Prime and a host of diverse locations in both physical reality and the wild reaches of cyberspace. Discover the truth behind an enigmatic AI striving to reach the Singularity, a theoretical “event horizon” in which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence and all bets about the future will be off. How will you play your part in the story?

Features:
 • Rare melding of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions meld with hand-drawn characters, animations, and locations, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
 • Multiple solutions to problems: Operate in cyberspace or normal reality. Overcome obstacles using skills, weapons, special equipment…
 • Meaningful character progression choices: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
 • Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
 • Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
 • Rich game world and mindful level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
 • Full voice acting: Interactive dialogues using hand-drawn sprite animations, fully voice-acted by professional actors.

I like the concept of this game so much: Basically a 2D side scrolling cyberpunk RPG - at first glance simple but still story rich with a variety of options and ways about how to solve quests and proceed in the game (e.g. fight, sneak, hack your way... ).

What I like most is the gameplay: There is just nothing complicated or complex you have to deal with. It's designed in a way that the game is just fun: very easy to play so you can focus on the story.

Very very nice - definitely recommended!

Game sees I am using an X-Box One controller. Controller setup says it is working properly and all buttons are good. In game the buttons are all mixed up and one button (Y) is not working at all. Button prompts always read the wrong button no matter how you try to configure it.
If you like playing a platformer with keyboard and mouse play this. If you want to actually be able to control your character, play something else.
I also tried an X-Box 360 and my old PS2 controller. Similar problems for one, non-functional for the other.

This game came out 7 years ago. There is no excuse for beta level gameplay.

This game looks super cool and I may end up liking it if I could be bothered to fist fight these early game thugs.

The controls for melee combat are a struggle. And while it's not that hard why bother?

Download the demo to see what I mean. Start punching a dude, then do a dodge roll.. Suddenly you are disoriented and punching in the wrong direction.

Kill a guy who is shooting at you? The loot they drop is not going to be anything handy LIKE THEIR GUN.

I am well aware that it's an RPG and I have to level up my guys but I played for a half hour and the entire time it was the exact kind of challenge I am not seeking. Fighting controls.

Dodge roll is supposed to put you at an advantage not make you vulnerable, facing away from your opponent.

Looks like a cool game with a rich RPG system but it has a beginning that is a total turn off.

This is probably the best 2D rpg I have ever played to date (it definitely helps that I am a huge Cyberpunk fan and love the hacker aesthetic). The combat, while not revolutionary by any means, is not nearly as difficult as people make it seem. In fact, by making smart level-up choices (and especially by utilizing the DLC outfits), the combat is not very difficult at all. I think many people are just used to playing rediculously-easy games and get angry when they can't just brute force their way through challenges and are forced to actually think before mashing buttons.

Anyways, this game is not about the combat or the graphics -- I know...shocker.... The narrative, worldbuilding, characters, side quests, platforming, puzzles, and bullet-hell hacking are what make this game amazing. Although the gist of the primary narrative of this game has been seen in other games/movies/books before, I thought Dex took a great spin on it - the dialogue really is top notch in this game in terms of making you really weigh out your options before making a decision - particularly at the end.

To anyone who is looking for a good cyberpunk narrative that has incredible writing and thought-provoking philosophical implications regarding the direction humanity seems to be going in in real life, definitely give this game a shot; it was worth every penny.

To the devs:

Great job - it seems these days that the status quo in games is to sacrifice story, characters, writing... pretty much everything... in order to focus 90% of the development effort on graphics, and (just like in our school systems) to dumb down everything so that EVERYONE can feel like a winner.... I applaud you for making a game that does the complete opposite of this. This game made me think about my choices before making them, had a few great puzzles that actually required critical thought (CRASH puzzle was the best), and best of all, the narrative was actually MEANINGFUL. Most games (in my opinion) coming out these days are just mindless button-pushing simulators with pretty graphics and little-to-know meaningful dialogue. This is the first game I have played in a while where literally every sidequest had great dialogue that I enjoyed completing. Bravo for showcasing the superiority of games that focus on the actual content instead of just how it looks. As an aspiring indie game dev myself, this game has been a huge inspiration for me. I look forward to anything else you put out in the future.

I attempted to run this game twice, the first time depleting my resources early game and finding myself stuck. However, my second run went smoothly, I knew which perks worked for me, etc and the game was fun and over quickly. It's a good enough game that I'm considering getting a copy on Switch to play while homeless.

I don't know what the rest of the game looks like, because I can't get past some early game hoodlums due to the atrocious combat controls. Can't think of a reason to recommend something like this. Shame, because it looks nice.

This game is for you if you want:
- a visual novel with plenty of fantastic voice acting
- thoughtful story telling
- a gritty, cyber-punk atmosphere
- a decent hacking minigame

This game is not for you if you want:
- fluid combat
- fast paced anything (besides taking damage)
- intuitive hitboxes
- functional stealth tactics

To be clear, Dex is a gorgeous game in terms of visuals, character writing, atmosphere, and voice acting.

But those strong points do very little to prevent your forehead from becoming better acquainted with the nearest wall or table after your second combat encounter. In most situations, enemies outnumber and outgun you. Your offensive options are stiff and clunky. Your defensive options are dodge roll or block; you can be shot for full damage during either of these actions. Your limited ammo per magazine means you can drop a ranged enemy before they drop you, but the second and third guys will rush up to hit you while you reload. Your weapon and melee damage is pitiful until mid-game upgrades and most enemies will bulldoze through the combo stun from your punches. The most effective strategy seems to involve abusing the takedown mechanic or jump kicking to stun-lock the enemies who are immune to takedowns (you can also stun-lock with a low sweep kick, but that does no damage). Every fight is best fought one by agonizing one.

There are some simple platforming elements that are reasonably well done, but once you buy
the high-jump,
the platforming becomes irrelevant save for a few ledges you couldn't reach before. There are also some puzzles scattered around, which I had fun solving.

The story, if you persevere through the combat, is pretty good. I've seen the same ideas told better, but I've seen them told much worse as well. The characters are believable and well suited to the world they inhabit. The voice acting is again wonderful. The lines are occasionally delivered inorganically slowly, but I didn't find this to be a negative until nearly the end of the game. The reading material found throughout the game does a great job of filling in the world - building a cohesive series of world events outside and within the scope of the game.

Lastly, the hacking is described well enough in the positive reviews. It could be its own standalone $5 game in my estimation. The only problem here is that the rest of the gameplay isn't better than the hacking.

I recommend watching someone else play this game, but play the video at 2x speed outside of text boxes.

Dex is a love letter to the Shadowrun series, pulling numerous terms and concepts from the Sixth World and bringing it life with a fully voice acted game with simplistic mechanics and straightforward challenges. While the gameplay itself is nothing deep, and minorly repetitive, it's satisfying enough to kick people's asses with the karate skills you learn. The story is where this game succeeds largely, as the experience is highly immersive thanks to the great voice acting and good writing.

My tip to you is, if you choose to buy this game, fully upgrade your hacking skill. You will be hacking a lot, especially near the end of the game.

Awesome platformer adventure. Not too long, not too short. The beginning of the game is kind of a chore, before you get your combat enhancing augments, but it gets really intense and good in the end. Good story, good characters, overall 5/5

Took a chance on this based on reviews (and a steep discount sale). Was not disappointed.

Pretty decent as cyberpunk-themed games go, I think. Reminded me nicely of the old Shadowrun games, though everyone is human, here. Also gave me some Gunpoint vibes (a plus). The game does have a metroidvania tag, but I think it only just barely fits that, being more of a platformer.

Speaking of the old Shadowrun games, I think the Genesis Shadowrun did the best cyberspace hacking I've seen anywhere. This does it as a top-down maze shooter, which, while not as good/fun as the aforementioned Shadowrun game, is still better than many hacking games I've played since then. That being said, I played with keyboard/mouse, while I've read many complaints in the discussions about how difficult hacking is via gamepad (perhaps using the d-pad would work better than the sticks? I dunno).

While cyberspace exploration/combat was pretty natural for me (though it took awhile to realize RMB fired off the 2ndary weapons/software), it took a long time to get even halfway decent in realspace combat. Fortunately, you can use the menu to pause combat and use healing items. The stealth suit from the free DLC and the auto-regen implant cut my use of healing items to almost zero, however, since I could both easily choose my fights, and wait to heal to full once in a safe spot.

For the achieve-hunters: a fair chunk of the achieves are guide-dang-its, and so, unfortunately, easily missed if you don't know exactly what to do, or that there even is an achieve for it.

a super fun and engaging experience! tried n true cyberpunk dystopia fun. picked this up some steam sale or other a while back and finally played through it. a decent length and difficulty, rewarding leveling, cool powers to unlock, cool mechanics for combat and or stealth, fun funny and engaging characters that you love to love or love to hate. absolutely beautiful art and animation as well! (especially loved the skeleton animation near the end of the game)

one note though, as i struggled with this a lot before fiddling with the settings: if you are planning on playing on pc, for the use of the horizontal long jump change the control settings to W for moving AND jumping otherwise you may not be able to get it to work. only use it when you need to do a long jump section though and revert to default settings after!

Overall, it's a great little game.

The controls are a little cumbersome, the voice acting is a little silly, and the grandiosity of the main story made me roll my eyes a little, but these are all forgivable. The core gameplay is solid, the visuals are great, and the little world is crafted with a lot of love.

In 12 hours I finished all the side quests I found, beat the game, and unlocked 78% of achievements. It's not a gigantic game, but if you're looking for a few evenings of solid cyberpunk, this should do the trick.

I can see the appeal of Dex, the main problem with the game that turns me off from in are the quest lines. The game lacks any form of guides, this alone is fine, but the quests tend to progress in strange ways which can make figuring out what to do draining.

I restarted this game 3 times because I kept losing my saved data (my fault), so I haven't gotten very far, but at the moment I'm absolutely loving it! Graphics and ambiance, amazing. Controls and game mechanics, reasonably smooth and intuitive. Story, very captivating so far. I love how the game pulls you in from the very start with some fast paced action before delving into long dialogue scenes, these writers know what they're doing.

This is a 2D real time action RPG set in a cyberpunk open world with a while bunch of genuinely interesting side quests and main objectives.

There's a pretty solid hand-to-hand combat system along with guns and upgradable skills. The range of upgrades feel limited and uninteresting but essential to character growth nonetheless.

I'll update this review once I finish the game but as of right now, I'm loving it and strongly recommend it.

Dang, the other reviewers were right... I don't know why I sat on this title so long without playing it, but I'm so glad I finally did. The beginning was a little rough for me because the combat felt weird, but I stuck with it and it quickly paid off. I really enjoyed the game, the story, the characters, the hacking - everything! 2D sidescrolling RPG, kind of like if Deus Ex was made on the SNES. Wonderful art direction and story. Melee combat is satisfying but full of exploitable tricks. Very light Metroidvania elements with areas blocked away requiring you to purchase augments to reach. As such your choice of implants (and also your build) is going to need to have this under consideration (and it also seems lockpicking is a requirement as well?). Kind of limits the freedom but I also expected to need those skills going in so not a major complaint. Hacking is a kind of roaming Shoot-em-up style. Not too hard, you can do it without ever investing in the Hacking skill, but points into the skill are still worthwhile anyway.

One minor complaint is that the default controller configuration doesn't work right. For some reason I couldn't fire a gun with a trigger button and had to remap that to a bumper instead. Still a minor quibble as I ended up eschewing gunplay entirely once I got the regeneration mod.

Overall, recommended, especially for fans of cyberpunk.

One of the coolest metroidvania games I have played in a while. The game is quite atypical in the genre. Not only because of the Cyberpunk theme, but because it features a lot of non-hostile areas, with a focus on elements like conversations, investigation, sidequests and exploration.

I love the cyberpunk genre, I'm always craving more of it...
And I really wanted to like this game...
It's visually enjoyable...
And goddamn it, you can tell they put love into it...
But the poorly polished gameplay, irritatingly conceived platforming, and badly planned out traps mean that it's just not fun to play.

Maybe I'll come back again later and give it another go... but thus far, I really can't recommend it.

As someone who played Comix Zone as a kid, thank you. Thank you very, very much. I didn't realize how much fun I was having until I stopped thinking about it.

Dex is, at it's core, a 2D side scrolling action RPG platformer. The three genres together are blended incredibly well. The game is challenging in the best ways, offering beat'em up combat but at the player's pace. As the story goes on and players complete quests and find loot, they can customize Dex to their play style. There are quite a few side quests that are optional, and the main storyline delivers a decent plot, albeit covered in cheese. My interest in the game kept me going and as it turns out, what I found annoying at first ended up giving a better impression. Dex is a sci-fi comic series turned into a video game, and I definitely recommend.

Oh, wait, it's another 2d platformer? More Metroid?.. That was my initial stopper. You see, I'm eager for all things cyberpunk, so I bought Dex without even looking into details. And when I got Dex and saw the intro scene, I dropped it instantly. For several years. My bad.

Actually, despite some visual misfortunes - and I'm talking not only about the 2-dimensional view, which is looking odd in many ways, but also about the detalization of it. Like the look of the main character, for example. I mean, there are some gross elements in the background, here and there, but it is obvious that Dex was underfunded and underdeveloped. What's even worse, you can see it right in the initial sequence. However...

Once you'll invest about half of an hour into the game, learn to adapt its gawky battle system (which again shows its worst initially, but gets better sometime later) - you'll finally get into the story, into cyberspace, into the city hub... And there you'll realize it's not a platformer. It's a proper-themed cyberpunk role-playing game, with meaningful choices on every quest, and it is up to you how to develop, how to pick the fights, how to resolve the situations you're bound to get into. At that point - and almost all the way to the end of the game - Dex is quite good. It will show some underdevelopment in the very end - with some loose ends and logical gaps in the story - but at that time, it will be not that relevant. Plus, it's not all that long anyway - you can beat the whole game in a day or two.

As of summary, I really suggest you play Dex - especially if you, like me, are into the cyberpunk theme. But... yeah, you have to deal with some awkwardness on the way. Visual part, the battle system - works, but you really need to make an effort to get used to it. Then, there can be some bugs with the quest triggers, making you unable to finish some of them without returning to the previous saves. However, there's nothing too serious. You don't need to look for solutions somewhere, just re-play some sections, and hopefully, it will be ok.

Mark is 7/10. A solid cyberpunk game, with a lively story. Glad that I have it, and glad that I played it, despite my initial disappointment with the first scenes.

The Story seems mostly generic for a game in Cyberpunk-Setting, but on the other hand it points with an small original 2-D OpenWorld, good soundtack and nice atmosphere.

Premise: Taking place in a familiar, vaguely dystopian cyberpunk city called “Harbor Prime”, you'll play as a character named Dex. Who Dex specifically is remians a bit of a mystery going in — however, the general introduction is such that you're being chased by what appears to be some sort of authority and then a hacker, named 'Raycast', intercedes and tells you to run away after helping you jam the door. Shortly later in the introduction —
upon arriving at 'Fixer's Hope'. You'll meet Decker, a man that Raycast trusts. It's then revealed that the people chasing you are named 'The Complex'. They want you dead. Raycast's explanation for interceding is that you, Dex, are a “seed” of Kether — Kether is an AI that oversees the entire network throughout Harbor Prime.
Beyond this, the game leaves you to explore.

On its face, Dex is an SNES styled 2D, beat 'em up with RPG elements with some twin stick shooter aspects. Namely in the hacking mini-game or if you level in ranged combat. But it's got a fair bit going on behind the scenes.

Arriving at Fixer's Hope.

Getting to Fixer's Hope acts as the prologue as well as the tutorial. I've had this game in my backlog for some time and that's largely because I had heard reports about undue difficulty and saving problems. The combat can be brutal. And if I recall correctly, the game didn't allow manual saving, only auto-saving between screens — and because the combat can be down right brutal at times, it makes sense why people were pushed away. Thankfully, that is no longer the case and you can save at any time outside of active combat.

”I never asked for this.” — Adam Jensen

The process of getting to Fixer's Hope attempts to set up the mechanics in how you'll play the rest of the game. It has you face a gate that impedes the main objective, which again, is to get to “Fixer's Hope” — through exploration you'll find you can either pick the lock, beat up or convince the guy who has the key [through dialogue] to give it to you or you could complete a quest for him involving some C4 and a bridge to win his favor. It all depends on how you level, how much you explore and how you want to play.

As the game is very open-ended and doesn't tell you where you need to go — it's got an “old school” quest system. There are no way points. You'll need to actually read the log to figure out where to go. But you can fast travel at any time.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2445443983

Leveling into melee for example allows you to increase the number of hits in your combo as well as perform other moves like a leg sweep, handy for knocking people over when charging power strikes. I played it with a gamepad given the nature of the game. You're able to roll with the right analog stick to avoid unblockable strikes as well. Otherwise the gunplay acts how you'd expect a 2D, side scrolling twin stick shooter to behave.

Hacking in C-space controls as a twin-stick shooter. You can activate it anytime, though outside of a computer it's technically Augmented Reality. Which levels separately from hacking. It can be used as scouting tool, but primarily used to hack things in the environment such as cameras and turrets.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2445439706

Dying in C-space won't kill Dex. However, you'll suffer 50HP from “Brain Damage”. You can then recover a small amount of focus (which is health inside of C-space) before jacking back in. I found this knowledge made me less fearful for trying to “brute force” a lot hacks. Any damage done to nodes will persist as well. Neurostims can be used to heal focus.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2445439675

There are a few focus refilling machines throughout the game as well. Later on, once you've got your Neuroweave, you can buy and use augments. This is a cyberpunk game after all — often these will be used to supplement things you haven't leveled into naturally with XP. There's even a re-breather like Deus Ex.

Replayability?

It has some. There are certainly some side quests that are missable without a guide if you're only going to play through once. There are also multiple endings but...
the cut-scenes are relatively short and provide no real epilogue or denouement. They're a bit unfulfilling compared to the rest of the game.
The Gist:

Dex may have fared better had it not have had a poor initial reception, at least to my memory. Many of those issues are gone now. It's quite a well-told story with a lot of interesting side quests and variation. Though I do find the introduction a tad on the non-welcoming side. All of the dialogue is voice acted and is done pretty well in most cases. I believe the studio is in Prague.

I like the art-style and the world that's built. Many of the characters and side quests are quite interesting. The main quest is kind of traditional for the most part but the supporting cast mixed with the different ways to accomplish tasks make for a great time.

Zitat:

Plus it runs essentially on a potato. Which I really like. My PC is no slouch, I just feel like it lends a certain magic to a game — makes it feel like a tiny pocket-dimension on top of making it available for more people to play.

This might be one of the best cyberpunk indie games I've played, unfortunately it's let down a bit by the combat not being very good.

The game looks nice, areas are easily recognisable, it does a good job of world building and the story stuck with me even after I finished the game.

The game being short works well in its favour due to the less then stellar combat, meaning you spend more time with the story and less time in awkward combat encounters.

This is a game that's well worth checking out.

If you are looking for something entertaining and different give this game a look its well made visually as well as the music sound and content its a story that surrounds a world AI.

Like the matrix movie which we have all seen, Dex can jack into cyber space but she doesn't have a jack she is a child of the AI which cast its self into her body adopting her as a child after a virus was released to subdue the world AI by some unknown government group Dex steps in after meeting what she would deem as crazy people the story is just opening up so a updated review will come later.

Well worth the price tag.

Outstanding game! I didn't think I'll enjoy it as much as I thought based on the screenshots. The visual style turned me off a bit. Fortunately I was completely wrong.

The game plays really well. Has great visual style and very satisfying quests. The world is somewhat small but very packed with great stories to discover.

Only the very end was somewhat disappointing and a bit flat. Otherwise I really loved playing the game.

Hi,

First 35 mins felt like a never ending boring 4 hours. Classic you start the game, they are after you, you get help from someone anonymous, you start running under the help from some voice... Bunch of usual moments that we get on most games. After all of these boring moments you reach the people that helped you and the game starts to become fun-enjoyable.

-The story is told in an eloquent way, where it is quit enjoyable.(Still not amazing)
-The combat is simple but not in the way of boring. You have plenty of atack options. Combine them with couple techs you have; once you get a hang on it. it flows like water.
-The Gunplay is unimportant and useless. I only shot my guns to see what they do. I'm serious never used them.
-The map design is well made, it is truly an open world. You have access to the whole map with all what it offers from the get go. Every section of the map looks great, The only complain I have is once you enter an area there is no minimap to guide, so you have get familiar with the areas which you will visit bunch of times.
-Upgrade systems: Suit upgrades, Tech upgrades, Robotic upgrades are putted excellent to fit in with the theme and story. There are usefull logical upgrades on the other hand the level upgrades are your usual nonsense upgrades. Spent a point you get increased damage, HP etc.
-Most missions have a stealth option if you want to go stealthy otherwise just kick and punch it is fun.
-I wish there was a difficulty option because the game was way too easy.
-When the game ended there was nothing else to do, so it is a one time go game. There is nothing new to experience after the first play.

DEX is definitely one of my favorite game that I played. I would love to see more from this title or from the developer.

Definitely one of the most interesting action games I've recently played. This is such a game that does everything pleasingly well for me. I enjoyed the setting and level designs; I had fun all along the combat, hacking, exploring and social interaction sequences, soundtrack was alright and such. Of course Dex has some roughnesses but it's a great game nevertheless and I'm fully satisfied with .50$ I've spent on this game. Buy it on sale and enjoy!

Great little cyberpunk game. Very atmospheric.
Unfortunately, gameplay isn't great, and the story is not all that deep either (but still good).
However, characters are interesting, progression feels rewarding, and the world is well-made.
It lends itself well to min-maxing if you're into that sort of thing.

D[strike]eus[/strike] Ex

Have you ever drank one of those knock-off sodas? Most of you probably have. The knock-off sodas are usually pretty good in taste and have an affordable price compared to the brand sodas. Sometimes they could even be mistaken for the real thing but upon further investigation you notice something is missing. Sometimes it is the small nuances in the taste, maybe it isn't as bubbly as the premium product or maybe everything is just a bit lacking all around. Dex is like a good knock-off soda that just barely misses its mark.

I'm not saying Dex is a knock-off of any existing game per se but it feels like it is a textbook example of a cyberpunk game. I'm torn with this game as it does many things right and many things wrong.

Dex is a 2D metroidvania action game with RPG elements. The basic elements of the game revolve around you chatting with different people and completing quests, defeating enemies and exploring the city to find loot and other hidden things. The world is simple and effective with enough variation to keep you interested in the quite drab city design. While the game world isn't the biggest, there are plenty of side quests for you to discover. Some of the quests are simple and some of them are longer and give you more information about the lore of the game. There also are upgrades you can purchase either by augmenting yourself or by leveling up and spending skill points to different types of combat and non-combat skills like Endurance, Guns, Melee and Hacking. These enhance your capabilities in different situations.

While everything works from a design standpoint there are a lot of things in Dex that are just downright awful in my opinion. The main combat mechanics in Dex are reminiscent of older 2D brawler games but presents you the option to use guns aswell. I really liked the old-school approach to the combat and movement in the game but it still felt really clunky. Melee combat is slow and extremely punishing. You either tank enemies by using healing items or wait out and give the enemies a punch or two when you have the chance. It is better to block most of the melee attacks you take as enemies can stun lock you with ease. Some augments can increase your damage output and some can increase your survivability. Outside of melee combat you also have hacking, which technically is just another form of combat. Hacking takes place in the Cyberspace and puts you in a twin-stick-shooter scenarios. Hacking can be used to hack different types of enemies and machines, like security cameras and turrets.

However, skills and augments make some forms of combat trivial. Hacking is powerful throughout the whole game and guns feel useless most of the time. Melee combat is clunky and never really becomes useful even with full skill upgrades and augments. This can be further seen in the strange difficulty spikes in Dex.

Dex has this weird design choice of making the player extremely weak in the early game and extremely powerful, if leveled right, in the end game. Some enemies will be tough even with full upgrades but most smaller enemies can be taken down with a single stealth takedown which can be initiated at any point through the method of hacking and stunning them. This makes the combat easy if you combine if with a health regeneration augment which negates the need for healing items completely. The early game was challenging and frustrating but the end game was dull and easy.

Dex also has a good storyline filled with great characters and scenarios but has a lot of cyberpunk cliches in it. The cliches don't make the story bad but if you've played at least a few different cyberpunk games you know what the story has stored in it. However there is one saving grace in the story and that is the voice acting. Dex has one of the best voice acting in any game in my opinion. It's quite baffling that Dex has more believable characters than most AAA-games. If there's something other games should try to beat in Dex it is the voice acting.

Overall, Dex is a fine game with pleasant graphics, frustrating combat design and overall an okay plot. In the end I still do think Dex is worth playing. While it is not the most polished game on the market it still deserves its spot. Dex doesn't necessarily bring anything new to the table but offers just enough fun to be recommended.

Shadow Run Metroidvania style. fun combat, interesting story, full voice over done well, 32bit style graphics, beautiful 2D landscapes, and the music fits the game well. You get a skill tree its a bit bare but it's better than none. I just wish there were more guns or even melee weapons. all and all I highly recommend it!

I was hoping for more with this game. I played it to the end to see where the story went and because I kept hoping the mechanics would improve as I progressed. The platforming mostly works, though I did encounter a couple of areas with invisible obstacles. Combat is somewhat broken, particularly if you put points into your AR abilities. You can literally freeze time and disable enemies temporarily, allowing you to pummel them, shoot them, or run past them. The artwork stands out in this game and sprite animations are fairly fluid. The art combines with the soundtrack really well to give off that dystopian vibe cyberpunk games are known for (when it comes to the sprites in the Aphrodite, ignore everything I just praised about sprites.)

To summarize, the story, artwork, and music are enjoyable, but I feel other aspects of the game such as combat (both game world and cyber world) as well as the platforming are clunky and unpolished. Buy this game during a Steam sale.

Disclaimer: I backed this on Kickstarter so I'm probably biased towards wanting to enjoy this.

So the short version is that I really enjoyed this game. Despite a bit of jank, it had a lot of that small budget charm. The game is not for everyone - you have to be able to handle some rough edges, but if you're that kind of person, or especially if you just love a cyberpunk setting, then I would definitely recommend checking this out.

The voice acting was definitely a highlight, and a surprise given the limited budget for this title and just how many voiced lines there are. Everything is voiced except for your main character - who is actually voiced, but only in select cutscenes. No performances were bland, they all felt very appropriate for their character and the setting, and they really helped bring the setting to life. Flavorful voices without being too over-the-top. The art direction also brings a lot to the game, it has great detail in the backgrounds that is so necessary to establish the tone of cyberpunk. I don't want to spoil any of the story, so I'll keep this part general. For people familiar with cyberpunk stories, I can't say there will be anything earth shattering in here, you've probably seen most of the main story elements before, but there might be a few interesting twists to the usual formula. This is probably to be expected for fans of the genre, a lot of cyberpunk stories are just twists or reinterpretations of the same core themes.

The other highlight for me was definitely the exploration - the game really rewards those who explore every nook and highrise ledge. Combat is good enough to drive the game forward without being frustrating, but it's not anything special. There are a number of ways to approach combat encounters, and while none of them are fully fleshed out, there is variety given the ability to focus your efforts into one or more of: hand-to-hand, guns, stealth (indirectly), and augmented reality, which adds a nice 2D space/cyber shooter mini-game that lets you hack people to stun them, or disable turrets/cameras. This hacking mini-game is more fleshed out when you hack a terminal rather than augmented reality, and there are quite a few opportunities to hack in the game (hint, worth putting points into hacking).

A completionist first time run took me just over 20 hours (I'm usually on the long end of completion times on HLTB, fyi), which was really a perfect length for the game. You could rush through much faster, but you would miss much of what makes the game great. It ended leaving me wanting more, but still satisfied with how things wrapped up. I would definitely see myself giving this a second playthrough in the future.

This is one of those games that seemed right up my alley. Cyberpunk, RPG, 2d sidescrolling.

Unfortunately it's also way less than the sum of it's parts. The story is derivative but acceptable, but the combat is very basic with terrible animations, the hacking minigame is an annoying geometry wars clone (and I usually like these kind of games), and the level design a bit uninspired and in a big need of a map.

Overall, it's a decent effort but ultimately found it boring.

Dex to me isn't good enough to be reccommended and I'll cover why here as well as the good aspects of course.

So the setting is your standard cyberpunk fare and tries to tick as many boxes as possible. You got these evil megacorporations and life in the city is dark and dirty. Theres drugs and gangs and violence and stuff and theres 1337 haxors fighting the good fight against the evil corporations via cyberspace. Cyber everything really, want to make it futuristic just add a cyber prefix. Of course augmenting yourself and hacking minigames gets checked as well.
The spirit of Cyberpunk is kind of more the struggles of the common man in these worlds but you are a chosen one narrative from the getgo. Many games do this though so whatever.
The story works perfectly fine to set up locations but isnt anything you havent seen somewhere else before and there isnt really a whole lot of standout characters or anything.
Dialogue choiches are also pretty damn limited but you do get to make decisions sometimes at least.

There is a whole bunch of sidequests which is nice since the game actively motivates you to try to upgrade your skilltree and afford decent equipment so you will probably find yourself doing them.

So why the hate? Well heres how things fall apart:
Hand to hand combat is ass. It tries to have this complex system of timings and poses but the moment more than one guy comes along it crumbles and even just one guy just isnt particularly fun. Most enemies are too beefy you can feel like you are being stunlocked a lot. By the time you max out your melee you can alternatively just afford the ultimate melee counter: guns.
So whats the issue with guns? Again enenmies are way too god damn beefy. You can empty an entire magazine into someone with nothing but a tshirt and they will just tank it. Guns are also counterbalanced by your having high recoil poor accuracy long reload times and ammo costing quite a decent chunk comparative to the cash you have for most of the game.
Well why fight then? I wish you had the option to go full stealth, the game obviously wants this with you hacking security cameras and many air vents and similar stuff leading around enemies. The thing is though enemies give xp. And a lot of it too. Not killing everything you come across isnt really an option if you want to max out that skilltree so instead of stealthing you go in guns blazing.
Then there is a skill that allows you to hack people and thats when combat just gets removed from the game entirely. Just having the first few upgrades for hacking already makes the hacking minigame for enemies almost impossible to lose or even get damaged at. And while you are hacking you freeze time and you have no cooldown in between so you can just stunlock the entire area if you want, the moment their stun wears off boom hacked and permastunned again.
And its just a whole lot of that.

Hacking gets broken by the fact that one of your attacks pierces walls and just lets you kill stuff without any danger. Add to this the fact that enemies dont respawn and really just throwing yourself at the same stuff a bunch of times is bound to always let you succeed.
You can upgrade attacks but i havent felt the difference once. It feels like you max out at +5% damage or something.

Then the bossfights are complete garbage as well. Im obviously not going to go into details but both the final fight as well as the last chunks of story are complete ass and just pretty dissapointing.

There is also a fair bit of platforming but your jumping controls about as well as your punching. There is many instant death cliffs and the automated saves are wonky so you will find yourself manually saving before jumping over anything.

So yeah the main gameplay of combat and movement in my opinion is executed really poorly and the story isnt good enough to save it.

Lets be nice for one paragraph before finishing this. This game is a real proper game with lots of love put into it most likely. Some or multiple developers dedicated a long time to this and that makes me feel kind of bad about hating on it so hard. unlike the swarms of asset flips that flood the marketplace this is a full title, worldbuilding story many gameplay ideas, various locations and lots of assets drawn to fit them etc. etc.
And there is even a Demo. No idea how long it goes but hey thats something developers should still be doing thats a great practice that has mostly died out. If this looks even moderately interesting to you screw my negativity go try it for free.

That being said, thats nice and all but still not a very good game in my opinion. So would not reccommend.

Since a lot of reviews already covered tehnical aspects, I decided to write a short text to describe the psychological immersion that this game provides. If you love System Shock and Deus Ex, or you generally like cyberpunk dystopias with exciting storylines, you absolutely must have a go at this. The story, characters and the soundrack perfectly blend together into a mix of a beautifully dark, but strangely intimate futuristic world. The 2D scrolling retro graphics with artistic backgrounds are a great choice for this game because more is left to the player's own imagination. That's how this game becomes so immersive and exciting. The soundtrack perfectly colors the atmosphere, giving it a sinister, hi-tech, yet emotional tone. The game locations feel very different because of a well built soundtrack. The characters feel alive and true, you can really believe they are real. The choices left to the player are all hard and morally questionable in their own way. They perfectly portray an imperfect, broken reality. All of this, if you can muster it from this wonderful little masterpiece, will keep you nailed to your seat until you finish the game. The ending truly makes an impact.

The MC's defining characteristic is that she can hack things wirelessly using nanotech or something. And this ability lore-wise is supposed to be some great near-magical thing... but it feels underwhelming. After 2.5 hours I got stuck. Finished all the sidequests I could find, because the main quest was leading me to infiltrating a warehouse with tons of security systems and guards... that I was unable to beat. Feels like I was missing something. If that's my fault, then sorry for the negative review.

Dex is a great 2D cyberpunk indie RPG game with beautiful handpainted-like graphics.
The gameplay mainly consists of three parts:
- Talking with people and buying stuff. (All fully voice acted! Which is pretty impressive for a indie game)
- Combat, which includes melee and ranged.
- Hacking, which is split into two:
- An AR overlay for the real world where you can hack cameras, turrets and, with a special skill, enemies.
- Hacking computers and mainframes which is sort of like a top-down shooter minigame.

The story is interesting enough to keep you hooked with a plethora of sidequests to do and interesting characters to meet.
The character development is split between different skills like Endurance, Melee, Ranged, Hacking, etc. and acquiring different implants (this is a cyberpunk game afterall!) but you get enough skill points to max out nearly everything.
Visually it's really pretty. I'm no expert but it seems everything was hand-painted (digitally-assisted) which looks great.

So yeah if either cyberpunk, RPGs or 2D games are your cup of tea buy this, it's really cheap most of the time, or atleast try the demo. You will get around 20 hours of fun out of it!

Where do I even begin with this game? I am a HUGE fan of anything related to cyberpunk. I saw this game on sale a long time ago and just had to buy it. Lets talk about just my playtime, this is a 10 to 15 hour game. I have 52+hours into this game. So that means I have done 4 to 5 complete playthroughs of it. If you go and look at my time for my other games I own you will find that this is one of the highest hour counts. TLDR: 2.5 side scrolling open world cyberpunk action rpg. If any of those words or combination of words interest you get this game! Now onto the pros and cons

Pros:
- Graphics (I love the 16-bit Metroid inspiration)
- Aesthetic ( It nails the cyberpunk setting, and themes to a T)
- Atmosphere (The world has a dark dirty lived in feeling to it_
- Game treats the player as an adult (everything from themes, to character interactions, no go here waypoint system. They want you to explore the world.)
- Tons of sidequest to go along with the main quest
- Customization ( decide what mods to install on the MC, skill point investment, different play styles, etc.)
- Story presentation (done with a motion comic style flair)
- Music (If you took the music out of Bladerunner 2049 and replaced it with this soundtrack it would fit perfectly.)
- Voice acting- Well done and every character has a voice even the NPC’s
-Digital world can affect the game world (what you do in cyberspace parts can help or hinder you in the real world.)

Cons
- Tony (character and the voice actor can be a little grating for some)
- Combat ( a bit basic punch, kick, guns, basic take down and stealth)
- Cyberspace (if you dont like twin stick shooters this may not be the game for you as it plays a very big part in the story)
- Story (well done, but a bit cliche, but let's be honest when aren’t most cyberpunk games)

Overall this game is amazingly well done and worth it at full price (get the soundtrack as well its AMAZING) This is one of those examples, of a game that nails atmosphere, music, and rpg elements so well that they far outweigh most of the negatives. Go buy this game NOW!

Dex is a 2D RPG that borrows heavily from Deus Ex, both in its narrative structure and in how it allows the player to approach the game. Unlike Deus Ex, it fails to be interesting in either regard.

Set in a not-so-distant future, you take the role of Dex, a quick-witted chosen lady who immediately must escape her housing complex and elude an evil corporation that runs everything...in a menacing way. After doing so, and being given a small tutorial, you're rewarded with free reign to wander the city and help its inhabitants out with whatever small or large issues are plaguing them, ranging from selling antique junk to a collector all the way up to defeating yet another evil corporation (this one predominantly involved in the food industry). You could also progress the main story if side-quests aren't your thing.

All of these quests have multiple ending points, a welcome change from the en vogue binary choices of 'good' or 'bad' most often seen in games these days. As far as I can tell, the best option from a reward perspective is not always the moral one, nor is it the one that takes the most time - the game's intentional with how it feels as if it's a real city, whose inhabitants would get along with or without you.

And this, I'm afraid, is one of the only good things I can say for the game. Mechanically the game is unpolished - there are always multiple approaches to solving any particular problem within Dex. At a high level, you can usually hack, punch, shoot or sneak your way to a solution, and how you do the solving actually impacts the story and the outcome. The issue is that being able to hack, punch, shoot or sneak into any of these solutions is always rather simple to do...and you've no real reason to change your approach, ever. So specialization is not necessary, and diversification is not fun.

The story is textbook, all the way to the ending. It never progresses from the bare-bones explanation I gave above, never once deviating from every trope in the sci-fi canon. By the time you get to the first big narrative beat in the game, you can see the ending coming from a large distance and, sadly, it's not something that garners interest.

The game smacks of potential, and really does start out feeling like a successor to Deus Ex. I'm not saying that the game is bad, just that it never progresses past what you see within the first hour of gameplay. For me, that resulted in me losing steam about halfway through and ultimately in this review...but you might really enjoy it (though I'd [probably unfairly] suggest playing Deus Ex instead).

Dex is a 2D, side scrolling, action-oriented role playing game that takes many cues from Deus ex. It features a customizable character whose progression will dictate your play style (and vice versa); a cyberpunk setting with dialogue trees; and maps that reward exploration.

OVERVIEW

Dex is a side-scrolling action role-playing game where you navigate a cyberpunk world filled with tons of choices and their consequences. You play as Dex, a seemingly regular woman that suddenly becomes involved in a plot between a group of hackers and a secret corporate organization. You navigate through this world uncovering the conspiracy while helping the denizens of a city called Harbor Prime.

While rough in some aspects and never reach the depth that games preceding it offered, Dex still serves a more casual yet engaging cyberpunk role-playing experience. It is worth playing if you’re a fan of the cyberpunk or role-playing genre.

The Good

 • Good world filled with a decent amount of content, engaging quests and characters. It is also proportionally sized. Not too small, and not too big.
 • Mostly offer a pretty open ended gameplay and role-playing experience that offer different solutions with different outcomes
 • fantastic looking 2D character sprites and background art
 • The city of Harbor Prime captures that cyberpunk atmosphere well.

The Bad

 • Shallow combat and stealth system.
 • Voice acting is either mediocre or straight out bad.

Bugs and Performance

The game should run on anything. I experienced a bug where I cannot interact with any objects after reloading a save. Quitting the game and reloading again makes it work. Otherwise I did not experience any notable game-breaking bugs. The game autosaves every map transition, so even if something happens, I don’t really worry about losing too much progress.

Gameplay

Dex’s strongest suite is how open ended it is. After around a 30 minutes to 1 hour prologue, you are thrown into the world and allowed to immediately free-roam the map of Harbor Prime. Like most RPG you’re given a main story objective and tons of side quests you get through exploring and talking to NPCs. My biggest surprise is finding a dead body in a very hard to reach area and later found out that it is involved in many side quests storylines.

Because you can explore almost everything in the beginning, most of the contents are open to you immediately and sometimes you will stumble across items or characters before you even know you need them later, and the game reacts properly if you found an objective before you’re supposed to. The main story itself is mostly linear and some of the sidequests need to be unlocked by prerequisite quests before. The sidequests vary from regular fetch quests, to multi-stages, big conspiracies that involve a lot of characters.

Character System

Dex uses a character system similar to the original Deus Ex. You have some main skills like melee, guns, hacking, lock picking, persuasion and more that you upgrade with skill points. You also have augmentations you can buy that have different effects. You have limited augmentation slots and skill points, so overall, the system offers a good choice of what you want to play as.

In this game you mostly solve your problem by 4 main ways: Combat/stealth, Talking, Exploring and hacking. I will elaborate each part of the game in detail.

Combat and Stealth

Melee combat is done like beat 'em up side-scrollers. You can block and dodge, you also unlock different moves and combos by increasing your melee skills. The game gives you a decent variety of guns, from pistols, to shotgun and SMG. Ranged combat works by equipping a gun, pressing the aim button and reticle will appear and it mostly works like side scrolling shoot ‘em ups albeit slower.

For stealth, you can crouch to make less noise and make enemies notice you harder. When you enter an enemy’s line of sight, they will start noticing and walk towards your position, when you are in their aggro range, they will start attacking. You can stealth takedown some enemies from behind. There are “heavy” class of enemies that you cannot takedown so if you are playing a stealth character, the only way is to evade them or run if you get noticed. You also can find different routes like air ducts, elevator shafts to evade your enemies.

In my opinion stealth is a lot worse than combat. While combat is repetitive it works most of the time. Stealth system is clunkier, for example enemies can suddenly detect you if you change area from a door and are unfortunate enough to have the enemy walking right in front of the door.the AI is also pretty dumb because sometimes they forget your existence if you transfer to other area. Overall both combat and stealth aren’t too well-done but they get the job done.

Dialogue

Like most RPG, Dex offers you dialogue choices that you can use to your advantage. To win a dialogue check, you have to analyze the opponent’s characters and respond with the most persuasive and proper choice. You also can invest in persuasion skills to unlock new options that are likely to persuade them better. The game don’t tell which option is the “special” dialogue option, so even with the skill obtained, you still have to pay attention to the conversation and use logic to debate your opponents.

Exploration

Most of the hidden places are usually blocked off by locks that can be opened with lockpicking skill, height, poison or other hazards. You have to rely on augmentations to allow you to bypass these hazards. These places usually offer alternative quest solutions, or loot to increase your wealth. There are decent numbers of secrets in the map and going back to unreachable places after you unlocked new augmentations can be rewarding. Exploration in this game is pretty good overall.

Hacking

Hacking is done through a shoot ‘em up minigame. You control a little tank and shoot different obstacles that also shoot at you. I find the minigame quite annoying, but hacking rewards you in a lot of ways from bonus money to information you can use to solve quests that it is basically a mandatory skill to have. Thankfully with the right skills and items you can purchase, this minigame can be made trivially easy.

Story

You play as a woman called Dex who is suddenly attacked in her apartment by a mysterious group of soldiers. Along the game you learned the reason why she was targeted and became involved in a grander scheme.

The story isn’t bad, there are some likeable characters and good lore to be found in the game. It is nothing revolutionary or ground-breaking and the dialogues are serviceable. While it won’t blow your mind and make you feel emotional, it does its job propelling the game forward.

Graphic and Sound

Dex has a fantastic 2D art. The background looks great and there are quite a lot of scenes and they are all pretty well drawn and pleasant to look at. The high resolution pixel art animation for the characters looks pretty good too.

The soundtrack is good. It isn’t fantastic, but it helps with the game’s atmosphere. The soundtrack mostly stays in the background. The worst part of the game’s sound is the voice acting. It ranges from just ok to bad. Some of the characters have some obviously fake accents that I find really annoying to listen to, otherwise what isn't straight out bad are completely flat or a bit cheesy.

Conclusion

Dex offers a pretty good cyberpunk role-playing experience. While it has some weak aspects that hold it back, it won’t stop you from immersing yourself in its world and enjoying the game’s many contents.

Even after playing for 18 hours, beating the game and every single sidequest held therein, I couldn't get enough Dex. The gameplay, music, art, writing, voice acting and everything else about this game is great. If you're a fan of the cyberpunk genre and RPGs then this is definitely worth every penny!

Underrated cyberpunk indi game. For your first playthrough go for lockpicking, and then abilities that let you sneak around and do silent takedowns from behind more easily and combat won't be much of a problem past the first hour in the game. The world building, characters, and story is well worth it. The voice acting and writing goes above and beyond and is exactly what is needed to turn a 2d side scrolling game into an immersive and believable cyberpunk world.

The game has beautiful art and though the combat gameplay is somewhat simplistic, the main storyline and subquests are all fun and immerse you into the Cyberpunk atmosphere. It is one of my favorite games to play!

Fun game but frustrating mechanics. The storyline is SUPER interesting tho and definitely makes you care about the characters. Worth a play through or two! And the art is also quite enjoyable :)

Very cool 2D action RPG with a beautiful and faithful cyberpunk aesthetic. Think run-down noodle shops, cyber-augmentations, hacking, and all that. Combat takes some getting used to but it's good enough for this kind of game, especially as you see your character progression play out. On that note, the character progression is a highlight of this game, it's satisfying to see Dex's abilities improve. The main combat in this game might prove enjoyable for fans of games like Smash Bros. to be honest, it was fun to treat it like that anyway. Meanwhile, the hacking is a well-done Geometry Wars-like minigame. The story is good enough to get invested in, not one of the absolute-best cyberpunk stories I've seen in a game, but definitely good and well-written. Also gotta note, there are a couple of bugs, notably one that happens too frequently while climbing ladders.

This game has a LOT of nostalgic charm that I appreciated. The retro graphics and cheesy voice acting reminded me of point-and-click adventure games I played all the time in my childhood. The cutscenes are also done in a beautiful art style.

Fans of the aesthetics and worlds of the Shadowrun RPG games will find a lot to appreciate here, though those games definitely had better characters and stories IMO. This cast still had flavor to it though.

This is a pretty good Metroidvania sidescroller RPG. Explore the concrete jungle of Harbor Prime and try to figure out what these military goons want with you! And for that matter, this hacker...

Harbor Prime's a pretty big place and while a lot of it is closed off to start, you're given EXP from killing dudes and completing quests to either make Dex a better fighter or a better hacker or so on, and then you receive skill points from hitting EXP thresholds or using certain rare items. Augmentations can open more doors so to speak, but they're fairly pricey and they're permanent once installed. One of the loading hints says that you'll never have enough slots to hold every augment, so it doesn't hurt to check out the shop once it opens and plan ahead. I personally ended up going for an exploration build on augs and a focus on hacking/lockpicking/dialog for skill points. The world was my oyster and I cracked it open. I ended up getting info and items for quests I hadn't come close to starting, but thankfully that wasn't a problem.

For me, most of my combat was done in melee since I ignored guns most of the time. When you close to melee, you're able to use a one-two punch combo (upgradeable), and you can block your opponent's attacks. Combat then was really just waiting for the enemy to attack and then getting in a couple of strikes before blocking again. Enemies have an unblockable attack signaled with a red (!), so either roll out of the way or knock them over to stop it! You're able to instant-kill most enemies by coming up behind them and doing a quick sleeper hold, but it doesn't work on big enemies or ones with armor. It's always worth waiting to engage an enemy when their back is turned just to exploit that since your footsteps seem to be silent anyway. Guns are a little awkward to use because you have a somewhat lengthy draw animation, and you can't do anything but move slowly while it's drawn. They're very strong and even the worst weapon can outdamage your fists unless you invest heavily into them. There's no way to damage an enemy when you knock them down with melee unless you're on stairs, but you have a moment to draw your gun and get a few dirty shots...

Hacking is done with twin-stick shooter gameplay. In the overworld, activating AR mode will display icons of things (and with an upgrade, people) you can hack. You have to stay within the circle until the progress maxes out, though it'll only decay if you leave instead of reset. Viruses and protection programs will come after you, so fire back! There are consumable subweapons and permanent secondary weapons for this mode you can find/buy, too. Hack vending machines for free money! Hack people to stun them for a few moments (or until they take damage)! When hacking computers, Cyberspace is also presented in the twin-stick format, but now there are walls and other hazards you won't find when activating AR. Focus is your hacking healthbar and hitting zero on that smacks you with 50HP of damage in the real world, so cancel AR/leave Cyberspace if things get hairy. AR is worth activating on entering a new room just to scout ahead for enemies, since your avatar thing ignores gravity and real-world walls.

There's a fast travel feature using the Map from the menu, and most areas you visit get fast travel nodes on the map. It's worth doing some exploring at the start to populate the map to make travel easier later. You can fast travel to Tony's for a free Focus refill, and go to the Chinese Quarter and see Dr. Niles for a 50 credit full-heal. Enemies don't respawn in the overworld and in Cyberspace, so you can largely brute-force the game if things go that badly for you.

On the whole, I found the game really easy, even keeping it on Classic combat difficulty. Hacking people turned most of them into instant takedown targets, even if they were previously alerted and even facing me. A horrendous gamebreaker. A focus on exploration got me lots of nice goodies and things I could sell, and skill points in Bartering meant I had a lot of cash to throw down on EXP chips and skill point cubes, making me even more ridiculous. Even with intentionally holding back by using only melee and no augments to bolster that, I had more trouble with some of the jumps than I did any of the combat. Not to say this was a bad thing, since I still greatly enjoyed the game.

What Worked For Me

Every single line of dialog is voiced. Shame that Dex only speaks in the scant cutscenes. The portraits even move their mouths while talking too, and that kind of reminded me of the old Fallout talking heads in a way. The voice acting isn't the best and the portraits sometimes stop moving before the dialog finishes, but it's nice that there was just so much to listen to.

There are quite a lot of sidequests and some of them even have different outcomes depending on what you do. One I reloaded on had the subject kill the quest giver because I screwed up the dialog choices, but the outcome I went with wasn't even the best one possible, apparently. There are three endings too, though your choice in the next-to-last mission determines which two you can pick from.

There are a lot of background characters in the city, so it actually feels alive. You can't interact with most of them, but a nice touch was them hitting the deck when they heard gunfire.

I felt rewarded exploring. A game like this not rewarding that would be stupid, but opening a locked container always gave me something useful, even if it was a junk item to turn into money, or actual money. I even found a sidequest giver in a room that I would've otherwise skipped if I wasn't so adamant about going everywhere I could.

What I Didn't Like

The game needed a little bit more polish. The portraits not keeping up with the dialog was jarring enough, but I often had cutscenes break. I'd hear audio, I'd see subtitles, but I'd have a black screen otherwise. And this included the ending one too, but it worked without a hitch when I set the graphics options to default. I didn't have any bugs at least.

I didn't like that there were no melee weapons. One enemy type will come after you with a chain, so I felt a little envious of that! There aren't but five or six whole types of gun in the game either, but the usual small arms types are covered.

There was one mandatory safe puzzle whose hint was too obtuse to understand without looking it up, and I never would've thought to use the method someone on the Steam hub mentioned. Someone else thought it was a hint for binary even!

Verdict

Ever wanted to play Deus Ex as a 2D sidescroller? This is pretty close. No nonlethal options, but the game doesn't care if you kill people. There are a few options for building your character and there's some replay value in different quest outcome branches, or just different dialog options too. It's a decently long game and while the simplistic melee combat might turn some people off, they could pick up a gun where I didn't. There's a demo, give it a try!

I'll get this out of the way: I'm a sucker for cyberpunk stuff. Legit, near-future corporate distopia stuff.

Also, I'm a sucker for metroidvania gameplay and cinematic games like Flashback and Another World.

Pretty sure they made this game specifically for me.

Also, the voice acting is great.

Also also, there's a twin-stick shooter style hacking minigame.

Interesting setting. Well drawn, although the animation can be a bit jarring due to the number of frames, but you get used to it. Combat a bit clunky, but serviceable.

Really likable or at least memorable game in the way of its art style where the 2D-sidescrolling action takes the foreground wherein essence the story is secondary but I really like the aesthetics of the game which sort of take priority because they together with the aforementioned elements produce a quite unique kind of part technological part dystopian atmosphere where you're trying to explore the world and puzzle out story elements together.

This game is kind of like a pixelart 2D (action)adventure game in which case we get to control the character in real time opposed to issuing commands around indirectly which I think is really a good alternative if you're into adventure games but don't necessarily like or prefer that way of control in which case, this 2D game feels more responsive and direct and in a way is what I like to perceive as a colorful joy to the senses.

In this way this game is very special I think.
