The cooperation aspects are really neat and interesting, I had some fun with my friends around that. But holy moly are the actual mechanics menial and boring. Also, I personally find the controls inconsistent and annoying, e.g., placing and picking up stuff are on opposite buttons for pickaxe and hammer, hence I often break my house while building. It seems like it has very few advantages over modded minecraft, while being (slightly) more expensive and less versatile.

After nearly 150 hours playtime, 80 hours of it as admin on my own server i can say, buy the game and enjoy it. Its not yet a masterpiece but it can be in the future. You need to take your time and dont rush things here, play together with other people and archieve something great.
Its overwhelming and complicated in the beginning but the more you play the easier it gets.
The community is okayish if you think that most games these days focus on selfishness and solo play instead of playing together.

Some infos about the game, its now 4 years old and receive frequently new updates which seems rare for indie games these days. No trading cards yet and only 1 achievment.
The graphics are beautiful and the performance is good.
The daily player peak is around 2500 players online and its increasing.

Overall i would give this game in the current state solid 7 out of 10 Stars :)

Bin gespannt ob und was in in neuen Updates kommt.

1.) Grafik
2.) Sounds
3.) Steuerung
4.) Spielprinzip
5.) Aufbau des UI

1. Grafik
========

2. Sounds
=========

3. Steuerung
=========

4. Spielprinzip
=========

=========

It's not a very casual game and will generally require a fair amount of time playing to contribute much. The main goal of most servers is to shoot down the space rock and not destroy the planet in the process. Most servers do however die out after the first few days, and end game objectives are lacking.

Eco is a unique experience. It's hard to describe the game with a list of genres because it skirts them all. It's sort like a town/civilization simulation game from the perspective of each citizen. The goal of the game is to cooperate other players to shoot down a meteor before it destroys your planet while avoiding ecological disaster. Each player starts with only the most basic skills, to mine rocks, chop down trees, a forage for food. You have to build workshops, stores, roads, homes, and research new professions to inch your way to the end of the tech tree where you can build lasers to shoot down the meteor.

The game features extensive systems for creating a very real economy and government. The rules of each server are a bit a different but generally players will each setup a store and sell goods that only their profession can make. The logger will sell wood they've cut and processed, the miner will sell ore and rocks they've mine, a cook will sell food they've made, etc. It sounds silly but nearly every aspect of a functioning society is present, has a purpose, and is critical to your survival. For example, food is not just used to replenish stamina or heal, it's used to gain a multiplier to your experience gain which help you unlock more professions faster.

There is much more to detail about Eco as it's a massive game with lots of intricate systems but suffice to say it's not just complexity for complexity sake. The game is not perfect certainly, it's rough around the edges but it's core mechanics are well designed.

The thing is, this game seems to be slow. Seems to be impossible alone. Except the thing is, no matter how you want to play you have world settings to assist you in catering the experience.

I would highly recommend for those who want to learn and play the game alone, that you play on a server. Playing on a server may seem daunting at first but you will come to realise servers like slow progression servers - that may be slow. Allow you to chose a single role and allow you to explore that role within the civilisation that is being built.

You can reset you skill points on most servers by contacting the moderators within reason, so you can explore if you are really new but I would highly recommend playing thru the first specialisation that seems interesting to you, no matter what hurdle you hit.

This will allow you to learn how interaction between specialisations and jobs work. Rome wasn't built in a day, nor was it raised by a single human or job title.

Lovely game, something I would suggest playing with friends and loved ones. It is a great game for learning about economics and politics but most importantly resource pooling and management amongst a community. If done correctly, the sheer feeling of success alone makes the experience worth it. The things you learn along the way translate across to real life. So please, take your time and play to learn not to gain.

I despise this game. It systems are not fun at all and make little sense. You must progress through a nonstop grind. If you play alone you will be stuck in and endless loop of doing the most menial tasks. If you play with friends you'll progress fast but then you'll have to wait for days on end for progress rather than do tasks to progress which will either kill your desire to play or will fulfill a psychological desire to play the game by forcing you to pace yourself the way the game desires for you to. Its designed to be addicting without giving quality gameplay that would make it addicting.

Its like microtransactions without hitting your wallet over and over.

ECO is a great game that is still in development. That is to say, while it is great, it isn't without flaws. There are bugs, and updates frequently break servers. However, you can easily spend countless hours chasing down the next skill, the next objective, or your next big project.

I want to state as plainly and clearly as possible; this game is not meant for solo play, it's not even meant for small groups of people. To really get any sort of enjoyment you need several players working together in harmony to get anything out of this experience. It's beyond grindy, it's beyond repetitive, and it's beyond anything I've ever played before. It's essentially like having a job but YOU'RE the one paying.

Would recommend if you are looking for a deeeeep dive into survival needs/mechanics. Personally, I do not have the patience for that kind of gaming, but I knew what I bought. Just cause I don't like the game doesn't mean I can't appreciate the work that went into it. It is beautiful and without cheesy music. :)

I'm more a solo player, and ECO is tailored for co-op.

Eco is an otherwise great and fun game, and very unique in its approach to gameplay.

However the game still has many glaring bugs and flaws, many of which can make the game INCREDIBLY frustrating to play. Theres also a memory leak which has been present since 2018, which doesnt seem to have been addressed either. Frequent lag spikes and frame drops are also common for no real apparent reason, the game is playable but it becomes very very annoying.

For example if you are turning a vehicle as the server lags you'll proceed to steer off the road and into the ocean, bushes, river, etc. and you'll be left having to take out everything, run it back to town, and then pick up the vehicle as well (assuming you have enough inventory space)

Occasionally items you place such as carts, tractors, etc. will just despawn without a trace. This can be devastating in a game centred around time sensitive progression, especially if you're playing on a server you dont have admin rights to, you'll essentially have to convince an admin to spawn back in your stuff. Not a good look.

The game is VERY grindy, whether you find that to be a good or bad thing is largely personal preference but progression does feel rewarding (assuming it doesnt just despawn lmao).

Eco has so much potential and is very fun, educational, and informative. A great place to meet other gamers and form solid communities.

However with so many glaring bugs and issues not being addressed as further content is added, and pie in the sky content such as Eco Infinite is being announced is a red flag for me personally. When game breaking bugs such as vehicle despawning are present, and seemingly ground level implementations such as smooth animal movement are not yet fleshed out; it sends a warning message about developer priority.

I'd say Eco at the moment is worth maybe $20 but not much more. Get it on Sale and try it out but be prepared for some bullshit.

This game is NOT yet worth its full asking price. Sorry StrangeLoop. I love what you've created thus far, but there are many glaring issues which need addressing before an asking price of $42 is justifiable.

Bluntly, this game is tuned for 30+ players. It needs to be on all the time, and if you're playing with about 5 friends, you are going to have to use the cheat console to make this game playable. The research costs are just too high for anything else. I feel like this game is a chore, not an enjoyable way to relax, which is downright amazing when nothing can kill you.

At least 20 of my ~100 hours are just digging a pit to put the toxic waste from my friends' iron mining and processing... which they have collectively spent 50 hours on. This game just isn't tuned for anything except massive groups, which is frustrating. At least I got to watch Star Trek on Netflix.

A cute and fun game. My husband and I played it through to victory. With only 2 of us playing, the pollution aspect of the game was minimal (mostly the wet tailings and water/air quality during metal processing). We enjoyed building our industry areas, farm lands, luxury houses, and commercial areas. We also built an awesome capitol building. With the 2 of us, most of the buildings were just for looks - not really needed, but we had fun being creative. My complaint is too few decorative objects. For example, I built a restaurant, and other than tables and chairs, there wasn't much to show off the dining area. Also, a hotel - I'd love to have things to decorate a lobby other than a couple potted plants and couches. Maybe a reception desk, paintings for the walls, etc. Different size tables. Items to put on tables. Being able to put items on top of rugs (an option to make different colored rugs/carpets of the various types). Just little things that would add to the decor of rooms.
The grind is real. Everything you build takes a ton of harvesting. We actually enjoyed that, and I really loved the logistics of finding places for everything and putting raw materials in the various needed locations to be processed. We ended up building massive amounts of the large lumber stockpiles and often had them filled to the brim. We actually also liked that there were so many different pieces that were needed to make each item. Definitely an interactive game that takes a ton of thought about all of the moving parts.
If you don't mind grinding, if you like logistics and analysis, and if you enjoy building games, you will probably enjoy playing Eco. My husband and I did.

I like this game as you can see I have 400+ hours in it. However, I would NOT recommend paying money for this game because it runs like trash. This isn't an issue with my PC. It's generally an issue with ECO. Not only do they have tons of performance issues, but also constant bugs that are game breaking.

I just tried picking up this game again after a few years and tried playing on official ECO server as to hope to get good performance and no bugs. I was getting a bug where every sand block I picked up turned to dirt, good thing I wasn't actually needing the sand and just wanted to move the block cause that would have been hell. While mining, its so slow and laggy that rocks will appears seconds after you hit the block and sometimes will glitch into the ground and such. I had one rock that wouldn't break at all so I left the server to rejoin it to hopefully fix the unbreakable rock but now I'm getting an error preventing me from joining the server I was just in (an official ECO server).

After many hours on this game in it's early development, I'm sad to say this game still feels like a poorly assembled alpha game.

It's okay. I like the art style and I'm fine with the collecting mechanics. This game definitely needs some work, it's playable as-is but there are a lot of aspects that aren't intuitive or user-friendly. The research being among the most notable. I also don't like that there isn't an NPC option. I realize the goal of the game is to work together with friends to be able to prevent the end of the world and what not, but that's not always a feasible. It's pretty lonely and pointless to play without any other individuals and as a big loner myself, sometimes I just want a game to chill with a game by myself. It's also a very time-consuming game that would require everyone to be on in order to get the full experience of the game, and that is also not really feasible beyond an hour or two every day. I've seen some comments that say that NPCs would ruin the game, but other open world survival craft games use NPCs and they're fine. Most notably Minecraft. I think you could have them around and just have them use resources or man the store units or benches so that you as an individual aren't running everything on your own. This game looks like it has a lot of potential, but I do think the developers could explore a bit more with the mechanics and hopefully consider NPCs. Not sure I'd recommend for the price at this stage, but it's decent.

Become a carpenter. Start a wood based currency. My friends get tired of my monetary monopoly so they start producing wood products on their own. I ramp up production in response. So do they. Production war ensues. Massive inflation. Economy ruined, old growth forests obliterated. Progress? none. 11/10 would deforest a planet in the name of maintaining my monopoly again.

I was hesitant to buy Eco because I don't like multiplayer games and some people say that this game is impossible to play solo. Not the case. It was also a nice surprise to be able to disable the meteor in game as opposed to cheating or using mods. Now I have a super good building game with no time-crunch and no bothersome children/tweens calling me racist names.

The game is great but.. What ruins it is the politics, people arguing over the politics, people making corporations, hoarding money and become monopolies and destroying the economy by doing so. This game really shows the greed most people have inside of them, and it's not even real money. It is so very painful when your hard work goes to waste by these types of people.

At this moment, I can't recommend, just because of the amount of abuse I've received by other players, its absolutely destroyed my mental health. I don't know what the solution is, but the devs need to come up with some solution to monopolies, and corporations because in-game laws trying to govern these things, in my experience, always end up with the abuse of other players. If you don't have friends to play with to start a monopoly, you're basically fucked.

I've seen at least 4 communities that I've played with that divide because of player abuse so it's not just me. The game is already dead in OCE and it will continue to die if the playerbase continues to stay toxic.

Eco is a good game. I would recommend playing it with at least 2 other people since the majority of game mechanics are set up to managing a village full of people. I can't see this game being any fun in single player.

A great idea, with far too broad a scope resulting in painfully slow and boring game play. Even with a group of 8 it can take days to get anything meaningful done. It might be better with a very large group of closer to 50 players, but the fact the devs even suggest playing in single player mode is a joke, and I say this as someone who loves sinking weeks into slow crafting survival games like Minecraft, Factorio, and Subnautica.

Less a survival-craft game and more about making new friends and working well with others. The core of the game revolves around resource gathering - chopping trees, mining stone, picking veggies etc. Where it all comes together is in the interactions with other players. Everyone has their own agenda but at the same time everyone must cooperate to face larger challenges. Not recommended to play in single player as the game just simply won't work. Nor is it necessary to have a close knit group of friends to play with. I find part of the fun is logging on to an active server day 1 and meeting new people and figuring out how to make a place for myself among them. Seeing what players build, seeing the world change and civilization grow is a lot of fun. I find I am competing less with others for resources and more with myself, trying to improve my efficiency each game, or create a more successful business enterprise. All in all a very fun, often relaxing game that is social in the best ways. Highly recommended.

THIS IS NOT A SINGLE PLAYER GAME

It's going to be a great game some day. However, right now this game does not work unless you have 4-5 players. You slowly grind your way towards level 7 and then realize the game caps you there and there is no way forward. You're stuck at 20-30% of game content. This is not a single player game, just as an MMORPG isn't a single player game. Not everyone enjoys playing in a crowd. Please remove the misleading tag and specify the minimum number of players on the Steam store page.

Continue reading below for more issues we found.

Are you looking to play this game right now? Then I can't recommend it. Are you looking to help a game with a great potential to develop? Then yes.

There are several issue we discovered. Thankfully, the developers are incredibly responsive on GitHub responding to issues, even if the resolution is sometimes not what you'd want. We got answers between a few minute to a few days after reporting them. Below are the issues we discovered as of version 0.9.3.6 beta release-235:

[strike]Single player[/strike]

TL;DR: Single player is a lie, you need at least 4-5 players to be able to progress through the game without console commands.

Despite being advertised as single player, this game is most definitely not single player. You can not progress in this game beyond a certain point. The game caps you at level 7, meaning that you can, at most, have 8 out of 30 possible professions. In other words, you'll not be able to create only ~20-30% of the possible building blocks. The only way around this is using a the (undocumented) console command /skills givepointsto to give you 30 stars, disabling the stars system altogether. (This makes the game a lot more enjoyable, too.)

The game also won't even load if Steam is offline.

The developers would do well to remove the single player tag from this game. Right now, it is a bit of false advertising.

Glitches

Pulling a cart over uneven terrain underground? Find your cart suddenly entering an infinite loop between the ceiling and floor. Clipped into the wall? Suddenly you're on the surface and have to walk back underground again. (Better than clipping into the wall permanently, but still.)

These are not too annoying, sometimes even funny, but can be frustrating. More importantly, they can cause server crashes (see below).

Frequent crashes

Every hour or so the server will crash due to being unable to process some glitch that's happening in the game. Right now it seems that the developers don't have it nailed down why this is happening, see the user issue number 22499 we reported on GitHub.

Confusing storage linking

Storages (stockpiles, chests, etc) can be linked to crafting stations in order to make them use resources automatically. However, by design each player needs to link the stockpiles separately. While the design rationale is understandable due to the permission system, it can be incredibly frustrating to see that a crafting hasn't progressed because the player who started it hasn't linked the storage properly.

It is also worth mentioning that there is no separate setting for input and output on the crafting tables, meaning that the crafting tables will dump the produce in the first best linked storage that has space. You'll be left, at least early game, creating separate stockpiles for each crafting type.

Strong dependency between professions

Eco's ecosystem is a pipeline of obtaining raw materials and then processing them into something useful. In order to create lumber needed for tier 2 buildings you need to get wood (Logging profession), then create hewn logs (Carpenter profession). You also need to get Iron ore (Mining profession), the iron ore needs to be crushed, concentrated, smelted (Smelting profession). The smelted iron then needs to be processed into nails. Finally, the hewn logs and nails can be processed into lumber (Again, carpentry.)

If these professions happen not to be in your possession, you'll end up waiting for the other person doing their job. It can be made to work, probably works best in well-populated servers where you can buy raw materials, but it's very, very tedious in low player count servers and completely impossible below 5 players (see Single Player above). Do yourself a favor and give everyone 30 stars using console commands (/skills givepointsto) and enjoy the game a lot more.

Annoying tooltips

Tooltips are incredibly annoying on default settings. However, using the Hold 'Ctrl' to select sub-tooltips option makes them much more bearable.

Missing messages

A minor gripe, but not all error messages have a text. Enjoy an empty error popping up when you try to add blocks to a chest.

Eco is a strange case for singleplayer people like myself.
I'm aware this game was made specifically for multiplayer and the interplay between people and the environment, which makes this quick review rather invalid for the overall game.

I'm a simple person. I see a survival game with a USP, I look into it, I get it if I like it. Eco seemed very promising, and the screenshots make it look beautiful. However, upon getting inside, it's a bureaucratic nightmare of UI and menus on menus, which is actually the point and I can respect that.

I'll come back to eco every once and a while to try to enjoy the survival mechanics, but I'm not the crowd it's aiming for, and that's ok. I'm not asking it to change for me, I just wish I could change to enjoy it.

Eco effectively simulates the real world and also doubles your computer into a Radiator. I honestly enjoyed the game play, it's enjoyable for the few hours of gameplay I got even if the crafting is tedious. However I can't ignore the crashing every 15 minutes even with the lowest settings and under-clocking. I've got a decent PC that can run most games at ultra settings, reaching similar temperatures that Eco reaches with the lowest settings. God forbid I even touch the medium settings, my computer would literally explode.

I can't get a refund as I decided to wait and thought it might just be a few off crashes, but no, it's just how the game runs.

Eco is more like a social/economical sandbox than a survival. It's much better to play in a server with either your friends or random people because many features rely on running a society with a government, laws and a market to trade with. That is, it feels much more rewarding to work towards a goal in this game than any other sandbox games. If you are even remotely interested in politics and economics, this is a wonderful sandbox to play.

Another thing that differentiate Eco from other sandbox games is how important it is to build and furnish buildings. Many games offer furniture but it's honestly just a waste of space. In Eco, having an increasingly fancy home and building to house your work tools is important because it helps you gain skills faster. Specially if you play with the meteor on, you need to balance the society's growth and quality of life with the environment.

For some people, the lack of violence outside of hunting for animals will turn them away. There are also a few UI and UX kinks that needs to be worked out. Apart from those points, this is a truly unique game and the developers has a roadmap on their website. Updates are slow to come out but each of them are meaningful.
This game is clearly my favorite sandbox game by far.

26 days owned, 244 hours played, I'll let you figure out if the game is fun or not. Honestly though the game has enough width and depth to keep you entertained and I haven't even completed a scenario yet to down the meteor. I would recommend playing solo for the first 20 hours or so trying out the different professions and getting a handle on how the game works before jumping into multi player. You can go into multiplayer right off the bat and still have a great experience because the community is the complete opposite of toxic.

Game was fine in its earlier years. But as updates hit the game became more of what an Economics Instructor would use as a class project for class interacting. Heavily geared to laws and government and taxes more than any type of survival game. If you want a game that deals with economics and not so much survival--go for it. Otherwise this game is basically a waste if not playing with at least 5 or more.

Looking back at the sheer amount of time spent on this game, it's fair to say many an hour was spent, whether it was hosting a game world, administrating, being a Farmer, Butcher, Mason, Carpenter, Smith, Engineer or a combination of the previous few.

To say that I'll gladly keep on coming back for more is an understatement, but it has to be said. Though to be honest, it's not always a given that experiences are as pleasant as they have been, are, and continue to be for me. Back in late 2018 when I first started, I happen to have made the right call in starting up a server of my own, one where a high degree of organization, collaboration and well thought-out government and economic systems are in place.

In addition, through the vastly expanded build system which came to be in September of 2020, there was another big boom in creating megabuilds, one of which is featured on the Store page you're reading this very review on. For the Spanish out there - it was modeled after the Palacio de Liria in Madrid.

To circle back to my original point - the game truly blooms when played co-operatively, figuring out the best way of doing things with other people, and having remarkable experiences along the way. While I hope that whoever is reading this finds what they are looking for, know that the door's open should you wish to experience all that Eco has to offer while playing alongside veterans who'll happily teach you all there is to the game!

I've played Eco for 725 hours over the past few years, so I think it's about time I reviewed it. Eco is a Minecraft-style game where you work together to destroy an asteroid due to impact in 30 (real) days, but all your activities (like cutting down trees, building factories, hunting for food) generate pollution, cause animals to go extinct and raise sea levels. The small, dedicated community is extremely passionate, and joining one of the official servers is a must, if only to experience what the developers intended the game to be (large communities with laws, elections, roles, economic competition and districts). I can still vividly remember the towns built on servers long dead, and the players who spent every waking minute building them.

That being said, I think what I am in love with is what the game COULD be. It has grand ambitions, and has already delivered a few of those ideas, but it still falls short. It COULD be this great cooperative experience of working together to advance, but not destroy the planet in the process. It COULD be a great societal simulator where laws and elections are satisfying and meaningful. It COULD be a challenging balance where it's easy to permanently disrupt the ecosystem to a point of no return.

However, there's a few things holding the game back from really being a success outside it's small, dedicated player base. Firstly, it needs lots of balancing - the asteroid is FAR too easy to destroy (usually destroyed at about 10-11 days into a server), making it a complete non-threat. The game also HEAVILY favours players who join in the first few hours of a new server and dominate a particular skill tree by playing for 14+ hours a day in the first week. And the pollution caused by industry activities is so localised, and weak, that in all my time in this game over the past few years I've NEVER seen the sea levels rise (and that's meant to be one of the worse consequences).

Secondly, the UI is still difficult to learn, despite many improvements over the past few releases (including tutorials), particularly the whole laws/elections/voting interface. This has the effect of most players (except for a dedicated few) not getting too involved in debating or writing laws, or voting in elections (in a server of around 100 active players, it would be typical for less than a dozen to be ACTIVELY involved in debating or writing laws).

Finally, maybe due to the above issues or maybe just life, most players will play heavily for the first few days of a new server and then never log on again. For a game built around depending on each other and cooperating, this can be incredibly frustrating when a player who makes something you need disappears. It creates a cycle of:

  • Search for and join a server less than 1 day old
  • Play like crazy for a few days, have loads of fun
  • Can't move to the next skill ladder into player X makes something
  • Player X hasn't logged on for a couple of days
  • Only log on to keep your store updated and/or projects going, while waiting for player X
  • Log on to a completely dead server, decide it's not going to happen
  • Search for and join a server less than 1 day old

All in all, the game has SO MUCH potential, and I look forward to future releases if these things are addressed. In summary, I would recommend this game if it was on sale, and you had a group of friends to play with who were equally patient or forgiving of the balancing issues I mention above.

OOF it's like minecraft multiplayer, but without PVP/PVE, greifing, dying etc. which is really nice for those who seek satisfaction from building and progression. Don't be discouraged from the steep learning curve in the beginning, just ask questions in the chat as majority of ECO players are friendly and helpful.

Don't mind what the others are saying about progression being grindy. Yes there's some grind involved if you play on standard values (i.e. just no collab mode) but you can adjust any server values and just multiply experience tons, or if you're playing solo, you can just sleep through days to get new spec stars. So, solo play is also viable (I've played only solo so far). Though the real fun must be with the online play. I'm not going to bother reviewing that part since I've seen how it looks on videos etc. but I'll play it :)

Played multiplayer and I don't know how, but they've managed to recreate the old feeling of WoW in this game. It's like you're all part of a big guild and you're trying not to screw up but failing miserably most of the time xD

With 44 hours in a few days, it's safe to say I like the game :D

Okay, 110+ hours don't even remember how much exactly now. Played on medium collab, which was fun but you get to do too many things and it becomes time consuming. Playing on a very high collab server now which seems more to my taste since you get to specialize and trade more. Will probably update later on :D

Wow, I've played 219 hours??? Yeah, this game sucks you in. I've mostly played alone, which is unfortunate because the economy system is amazing. But I can never seem to find a good server to join where people aren't idiots (why I'm mostly a single-player gamer). But even playing alone is a very rewarding experience. Like Minecraft but better. What you do affects the environment around you. Nice skill progression system. The gameplay is definitely a long-haul type of system. You will sink hours and hours into it to see it through but it doesn't feel all that tedious.

not recomended especially if u play by yourself just because one mechanic,
teammate, yeah let one settlement be used by more than 1 person so they can coordinate

because they can produce more efficient so soon they will control the market. single player try to sell their product just cant do much, no one will buy simply because the team always sell more with cheaper price. they will control the market price and every of their need can be fulfilled by their own team, when they can keep sell the remaining that they dont need. single player with no team will be beggar that ordered around by the team just to buy one thing from the team.

its experience after play more than 200 hours from 5 different server

The game has potential its a shame its just not a game id suggest people spend money on. Maybe some day in the future.
1000 hours it says i have in this game. Its a shame I have to change my review from positive for future potential to negative because there needs to be course correction, and the community needs to have the right to speak without fear.

Good:
- It is supposed to teach about environmental impact
- It has a robust government system
- It has many professions to play
- many of the people playing this are social and friendly.

Bad:
- Environmental Impact is 0 it would take more players than are actively playing generally on most servers to see any environmental impact. It is for this reason the whole principle of the game is pointless currently.
- minimal character customization
- No end goals really to drive you.
- Game play lasts as long as you go through the basic classes, and then all mods developed.
- The development team/moderation staff (aggressive and ban/threat happy they used to support people hosting servers now if your post has a # wrong you can be threatened to be banned and your post removed.) This is the way you go from a mostly postive/positive review early on to a negative review.

Call me arrogant, cynical or even pessimist but this game is an absolute mess. Sure it's an early access but the developers had the audacity to charge you 30$ for an atrocious early access, if you played the game you would know that the gameplay, the crafting mechanics, the UI is so tedious and such a pain in the a*s that you don't even have the courage and strength to continue playing this game. And you know what makes this even better, I am not even joking, THE GAME IS 4 YEARS OLD! AND ITS STILL NOT FINISHED! FOR 30$!

I was under the assumption this game could be played as single-player. What they fail to tell you is they require an internet connection to play the game regardless. This was and is unclear to me and while that might be my fault it still is crap.

While I understand the game is intended to play as multiplayer it was misleading and it implied it could be played as single player and internet should not be a requirement.

Shame on me for not noticing the sneaky crap with this title. Got me this time. Won't happen again I can assure you. Just another crap EA game using shady practices. Should be accustom to this on Steam these days.

This is not just a sandbox, even though it does the sandbox job really well. This is also a simulation game. It throws a bunch of different people in a world that is in danger, forcing them to cooperate to save it, without destroying it themselves.

The game goes very deep in some details, specially related to the environment and politics. Player actions and exploration of the ecosystem have consequences and must be properly managed to prevent the destruction of the world. Players can create a constitution and establish a government, creating laws that rule the world. Economy is present as well, in the forms of banks and currencies the players create and manage themselves - which could lead to a thriving or unsuccessful economy, depending on how well they can manage it.

Overall, it is an amazing experience, but it may vary depending on the server and the people you play with. It is fun to play with some friends in a private server to learn the game, but it truly shines when playing in an open server with a larger quantity of players, also being a very good environment for role playing.

I am loving the game and would recommend it to anyone, but I must also list a few downsides:
- Not many official servers, so you might struggle to find a local server with lots of people to play with.
- Non-official servers are ruled by whoever puts them up, so they get the final say on some discussions, as well as deciding when and for how long the server will be up.
- It relies on cooperation, you cannot do everything alone (unless in a server configured to be extremely easy or using admin privileges, but even then, it requires time to do stuff). If no one is cooperating with you, you might get stuck in time.

All in all, it is worth the try, if you like the sandbox idea. Try and find some friends to play with, or a welcoming online community for the best chances on having an awesome experience.

The depth of this game is incredible. I never thought a public server could run so smooth but playing with the folks on the Sea Otter public official server has been a blast! One of my neighbors I quickly made friends with who is doing farming, and I myself doing Masonry.

Every job/talent in this game requires you to work with other professions in order to get items you need, making trade very important and the creation of roads crucial. There is so much planning that goes into everything you do, but if you like a game of grind and economy, this game is just great to grind away at.

The world evolves right before your eyes. In just a few days I have a steam powered truck, money in the bank, and have just extended my business into bricks, but on the side I sell heaps of fruit from a tropical claim of mine.

Alligators went extinct day 1, but we are managing to balance the rest of the animal populations, bison were down to 3 and now back to a healthy 80~. The ecosystem is so fragile, but can also be quickly saved with the efforts of the government and citizens alike.

We are just starting to reach industrial levels and I am very excited to see where we go from here.

This game is a must buy for fans of games that have economy, trading, bartering, environmental impacts, massive multiplayer collaboration, and even for the solo businessman.

This isn't a game for someone expecting great combat, a game like ARK / Atlas or anything of that genre. This is much more like MCMMO plug in for Minecraft with FAR greater detail.

I love the community i have found through Eco. the server CanadianEh is full of helpful people who like to play collaboratively and will be more than willing to help other players out. the owner works hard to run the server, and i appreciate their hard work. some members at the beginning were causing drama and being hateful/bitter because they didn't get their way, but since their removal the server is very pleasant. if you are looking for a server i would recommend this one. the game overall has some kinks that need working out,i haven't even scratch the surface of what is available skill wise yet, but as a open ended game that allows for multiple play styles it is great.

How much I love this game. I can't recommend it. Only play this game if you're with a bunch of friends or want to play solo player. If you're alone and you play on an online server, you probaly won't have a good time. Either you're going to be so far behind on other players because they all work together without trading with others, or you need to settle with selling lowkey to nothing. If you have friends to play with then its a lot more of fun, since you can co up together. After a few playthroughs you have seen everything and its kind of repetiteve. Also be ready to invest all your free time once you start in a server, because if you miss one day, you're going to be so far behind with the others. A good game during a lockdown, but once society is back up, there is nothing to do here anymore.

This game is clunk personified. Controls are clunky, menus are SUPER clunky, the movement is clunky. Everything about it is pure, unfiltered, in-the-design-docs Clunk.

I'm still having fun. I don't know why. The game is atrocious, but I enjoy it.

Dogshit game. It used to be interesting, but now it's literally unplayable if you just want to have a private server with your buddies. Now you have to be part of a huge server, you get a role, you do it and there's nothing but a huge focus on 'government' to keep you from having fun.

Man, really sucks, game used to be way more fun a while ago, but now the devs are just pushing their agenda hard, you go to their discord and try to try to get the files for the old server back, and you get nothing but their players freaking out you 'don't care about their community', no thanks man. I just want to play a videogame and build cool shit.

Very addicting and time consuming. If you don't have the time to play this often or you're not a very committed person I would not suggest buying this. However, if you're looking for a way to scratch your creative building itch then this is definitely the game for you. Creating not only your own buildings, but your own government with laws as well as your own economy. Keep in mind that this is a team essential game meaning that working by yourself on a public server and not cooperating with others will make things infuriatingly more difficult for others (but thankfully not impossible).

At the time of this review, I have 124 hours. 114 of those are spent in a server me and my friends started in October. No other game has captivated me like this one has, and i owned it long before this world we made. This game, even when playing only with a couple friends, really takes time and requires teamwork. Of course you can change all the settings to your favor for a singleplayer playthrough, but the vanilla experience is what we have been doing. There is no automation, your work requires either your hard labor or those of other players. We started as 4 strong but now it only seems to be me working so progress has kinda come to a snail's pace. Luckily you can sleep to pass ingame time. You start off with simple tools and a tiny tent, but eventually you will build up to having a whole city with buildings that have each unique use. At the moment, I have built up to basic industry. You will eventually have to worry about pollution and such, but for now I am not too worried. The meteor is definitely a motivator, but I feel all my work is fruitless since I have none of the other people online. I fear that all my time will have gone to waste. But it would still be worth it. Prepare to sink days in to this game, but if you don't have a whole team also get some music or videos ready. This game is no play for an hour kind of game, it's usually a few hour sessions to get stuff done.

Love the ambition, loathe the execution.

For a game like Eco to work as intended, you need a large group of players locked into the same small world. That's part of the reality of ecology: we all have to live here. We all have to share resources, make a living, think about our own needs and those of our children. But this game? I couldn't even play on a multiplayer server without my computer freezing or the game straight up kicking me out because my connection wasn't good enough.

Instead, I spent a few painful hours poking around solo just to see if there was any fun to be had. There wasn't. The resource-gathering loop of the game is horrendously tedious. The building is slow. The skill progression is grindy. The interface is unintuitive and unattractive. All the actual gameplay pillars that should be enjoyable to interact with have been treated as secondary concerns. This leaves the only avenue of interest to be the potential sociological implications behind the intended multi-player experience. But again, unless you're already deeply committed to the premise, even that isn't super appealing.

As I said, I love the ambition on display here. To even attempt to simulate something this complicated is pretty mind-blowing, and I salute the vision of the designers (in theory).

There's a lot I could say here about how these devs approached a very big, largely unexplored technical challenge. For the purposes of a Steam review, I don't think my opinions have too much value in this regard. I'm not a professional game developer. I can barely spell 58008 on a pocket calculator, much less could I have pulled off something as cohesive as what the creators of ECO have come up with.

All that being said, I just can't recommend spending money on this title as a games consumer. It's an interesting project. I hope more concepts of this kind are eventually made by others, who can perhaps analyze ECO more effectively than I can anyway.

After 4 different servers and 148 hours of game-play I have to say that I don't see playing this game online again. No one works together or cooperates. As soon as you get rolling a group will come in and blackball you plum out of trade. Looking at it's long history and slew of issues, I really cant see a reason to either play it solo or even keep it installed and wait for a patch. I think a private group of maybe 12 people with the same playing times could have a really great game, but that's the only way this game really works well. Coop games only work with people you know. Lock your server and keep it to a controlled few and it's a great game to play.

Fantastic game, ever since the game came out I kept recommending it to my friends to buy, great for creativity and pretty much relax and have a friendly game play with a chance to make a great community for everyone with different roles in the game to help balance it all out on the eco system and advancing technology. The only down side all my hours i put in are mostly me playing by my self that gets boring real fast, it's so much more fun with more people as every sandbox survival game, bonus is it's not a silly zombie game where everything attacks you. 100% recommended

I'm not going to lie, getting into Eco has been a real challenge. It's clunky, slow, it's hard to find a community that is welcoming to newbies, and is challenging to learn. This is disappointing because the game sounded so promising! I'll try again but if I can't get it soon, don't think it will be worth my time to figure out and find a good community. I also don't have hours a day to put into a game and it sounds like I have to log in everyday in order to progress. Maybe if I didn't have a job or life I could do that, but that isn't reality. All in all, I'm disappointed as this game sounded promising.

In a few short words, this game is one giant grind fest. I mean every possible way you could make progress slow and grindy, the developers have thought of it. It is like they are super geniuses of grindy mechanics and have woven this brilliant tapestry with many layers fabricated from pure grind. Its not any one thing, but a bunch of mechanics woven together. It is truly epic.

Let me put it this way. In minecraft you chop down a tree and get some blocks of wood. 1 wood turns into 4 planks which in turn turns into 4 sticks. So from 1 wood, you get 16 sticks. This game takes the opposite approach. Let me give you an example. You would think an iron ingot would not be too hard to acquire, but you would be dead wrong.

First off there is a large tech tree of items you need for privilege of actually making said ingot, but lets talk about resources assuming you have all these machines made just so you can make an iron ingot and upgrade from stone tools. First you need iron ore to turn into crushed iron ore. You need 12 iron ore, to make a single crushed iron ore. You then need to wash this crushed ore to turn it into cleaned (concentrated) ore. It takes 5 crushed ore to make one cleaned ore. So now we are up to 60 ore needed so far. But then to smelt it, you need 2 cleaned ore, now you are up to 120 ore needed. Now to be fair, this yields 3 ingots which is 40 ore per ingot, which is quite ridiculous. Now to make that iron axe or whatever tool you want, you need 5 ingots.

Doing the math, now lets see, you need 200 ore for ONE very basic iron tool. Also, you will need to repair it with multiple iron ingots.

This is just one example of grind, resource grinds.

Then there is the fact that the play can't carry very many items. Things like dirt you can only carry ONE of. Wood and iron ore, you can carry 20 of. You also can't carry more than one type of these bulk items. IE: You have some dirt, you can't pick up a rock. Or you have some rocks, but you can't pick up any wood.

There is a cart, which you can drag around which you can store multiple types of things in. Its not too hard to get, but even that is super limited because the cart can't go up hill. You need to build roads and ramps if you want to go up hill. This game doesn't have any real flat terrain. Everything is either up hill or down hill with the exception of small patches of ground that are on the same level.

So we now have one kind of logistical grind, the in ability to transport and carry items you need LOTS of.

Now you want to use a cart, you will need ramps. Early ramps are made out of dirt. You need to fill some stockpiles full of dirt to craft ramps. Normally you can put 20 rocks/wood/ore or whatever in each slot in a stock pile. But dirt, for some reason can only have 5 per slot. You need a lot of dirt to make a lot of ramps. More grind for no good reason.

Lets not forget to talk about trees. I have been playing this game for 17 hours are the time of this review and not a single tree has re-grown. Yes I have planted them into the ground. The reason is that they do not grow for like 4 REAL days. Not game days, but 4 actual server up-time real-world days. I have been playing single player so with 17 hours of play time, not a full game day has passed yet, let alone 4 of them.

Then there are skills you need to unlock. I am not talking about talent points which enable you to use the skills, but I am talking about the ability to unlock a skill so that you have the privilege of spending a talent point. It has some crazy tech research tree you need to do for every skill, which generally includes a lot of resources, adding to the grind.

Oh, to make matters even worse, many machines need to be in a room, like an anvil, or a kiln, or whatever. These things do not work outside. This means you need to build a house which uses a HUGE amount of resources considering how many logs need to be chopped then turned into hewen logs which then are turned into walls, floors and ceilings. You also can't pack these machines into a single house unless its huge because they also have some kind of space requirement which is much bigger than the actual model. So you may place a few machines in your house and they all stop working because some mystical machine volume of space was violated.

Then there is your xp rate which gives you talent points so you can like mine stuff or grow food. This is based on a balanced diet and how big and how nice your house is. You earn this xp every real-world game day.

Anyway, I hope I have given you a taste on the truly insane grind of this game. If there was a nobel prize for making grindy games, I am sure the devs would have easily won.

There is so much more grind I didn't even touch on. Its a shame because the world is very nice to look at, and the premise of the game is really cool. The game design has been poisoned by tapestry of grind. Maybe one day the devs will pull their heads out from their asses, and will re-work the game design. Currently, only hard-core players need to apply. This game will never be a main-stream game and will always cater to a very tiny market of players.

This game is a labor of love for it's devs and they have a very specific view for what they want their game to be. They don't cave in to the whims of every community member. They stay true to what they want to release as a game.

This is as much an educational awareness sim as it is a game. Very rare can you have both without sacrificing the other. They found the balance here.

Here you will find a community that works together. Partly because they have no choice but also because it becomes enjoyable and truly brings out the best that this game has to offer. Miners interracting with wood cutters, engineers with mechanics etc etc. It's all a twisted chain of reliance on others. Players setup shops and sell what they have created to others for their own currency and soon enough you'll see a main currency emerge that everyone uses. It truly is unique in this aspect and no other game has a player formed economy quite like this. It's just pure bartering for the most part and theres something to be said about working with a shop owner and scratching each others backs.

Basically real world Minecraft, where harvesting, farming, foraging and making things have a direct impact on the world. Cutting down trees and leaving the fallen items from the trees has consequences. Making things causes trash and pollution. It is recommended to play in a community, but it can also be played solo. (I play solo because none of my friends like these types of games -.-) And the game is still fun. The game can suck you into it though and you may lose hours without realizing it.

Kind of like Minecraft, for adults. Great game! Only thing I wish there was more options for, and settings that are tweakable when setting up a new game, is single player. I know that this game isn't really meant to be played alone or single player, but it would still be nice to have the ability to tweak different settings to make playing solo a little more challenging or fun, besides just doing creative.
I know you can use admin commands and/or modify different files in the game to change pretty much anything you want, but it would be nice to have a bunch of different settings that effect different things in the game when setting up a new world, with a list of all of the different things you can modify. Then having a description of what each setting is for, how it effects the game, and having a slider or a input box with the current value and giving the option to change it. Kind of like Ark, Conan, etc., so that you can have more control over how the world flows when playing in it.
Besides that (which is more just a personal gripe), ECO is an amazing game that does a lot of different things not many other games have tried before. I can't wait to see what other things might come from this in the future, as it's already evolved a great deal from when I first started playing, when it got released on Steam.

-9/10

It has some interesting concepts such as the way the economy works, the laws, and requiring people to specialize. Unfortunately, there is just too much tedium for me to enjoy the game in its current state. The gameplay does not evolve much from the first few hours you are playing. You'll start the game chopping down trees and hauling them away in small wagons. You'll end the game chopping down trees the exact same way with a slightly better axe and hauling them away in slightly larger wagons (or vehicles).

This same formula is used for nearly every skill in the game. Miners will pick rocks slightly more efficiently. Gatherers get small percentage increases to their yields, and crafters will earn progressively larger discounts to their crafted items. This is a problem because since the skills you gain are gated via real world days, you're forced to continue doing the same types of tasks over and over which is not particularly compelling.

The game desperately needs to switch up the gameplay to be more interesting beyond the first day or two of a fresh server, including new challenges and things to threaten the players (and the planet). Since players cannot die and the environmental impacts of your choices on the planet are currently minimal, you never really feel like your changes are making a significant impact in the game. Certainly, you'll see little settlements pop up all over the world (and get promptly abandoned as people get bored and never log on again), but the actual environmental impacts are virtually non-existent.

Cautiously optimistic for the future after more years of development, but I cannot recommend this game at the present time unless you are a fan of the tedious parts of Minecraft and are okay with crafting the same 5 items on repeat for everyone on the server or enjoy mining thousands of blocks of stone at a time since it's the only thing you're good at.

You have to sink hours and hours into this game to get any progress, you have to leave your server up 24/7 and even then you don't have much to do each day. If you invest an early skill point into the wrong thing, you have to wait 20+ hours for a new one. It's very punishing and not friendly to players who aren't committed to learning how to do their jobs. It has great potential to be really fun for groups, but in its current state I can't recommend it as it's just too slow and not engaging.

Amazing! Fair few glitches and bugs, but still in beta etc etc so easily forgiven. Majority of the time 95% its not buggy.

In all honesty this game has me absolutely hooked! I Have played 20 hours since yesterday when I paid for it.
Its a really beautiful world even more so with the size of the game, whilst only a small download feels like it still contains a lot of features and still very good graphics.

A few suggestions that could help the game improve:

1. Fix the bugs/glitches and memory leaks
2. Give the leader of the world the ability to appoint Ministers that look after each type of profession.
3. Be able to create towns with mayors etc. so world leader then the mayors for each town.
4. This might be hard to do, but add a way of escaping the meteor by Rocket to a new planet. Just as an option. And on that planet they would have to start again.
5. Add Nuclear Power Plants. To be able to make one of these would be amazing (Hard, but awesome). Players would be able to build it to help prevent global warming. Plus gives them something extra to think about (Nuclear Waste)

For all you players/people thinking about buying this game, Please DO. It is amazing and well worth the money!

Overview
The survival genre provides some of the most fun multiplayer experiences that we have in gaming – don’t @ me. Thanks to this, their grind can be highly addictive and often results in a huge amount of playtime for the price. I’ve dumped more hours than I can count into the likes of ARK: Survival Evolved and Conan Exiles, and I’ve had my eye on Rust for a while after hearing great things about. After accidentally losing a weekend to Eco, I’m confident that if it fulfils the promises that it currently makes, it’s likely to end up on the same lists as these fantastic titles.

Minecraft Without Monsters
Eco takes its inspiration from several sources in its genre. The world is made of blocks (dirt, stone, etc.), though it looks particularly nice overall. These ‘blocks’ aren’t easily identified just by looking at them as they blend into each other far more seamlessly than the clear boundaries of something like Minecraft. Even more outside of the norm, Eco doesn’t have any hostile threats that you have to face regularly, at least at its current stage of development, though there’s mention of some animals becoming more aggressive in the future. You also don’t need to eat or drink to stay alive, though you’re encouraged to have a balanced diet of fat, carbs, protein, and vitamins to maximize the modifier on your experience gain.

So what exactly are you surviving against then? Short answer, the clock, long answer, a giant meteor going to destroy the world if you don’t manage to do it first. As is hinted by its name, Eco puts a significant focus on the ecosystem. Though your world may be either the default or randomly-generated, plant and animal life, and resources tend to be finite. Animals can go extinct if they die off faster than they can reproduce and entire areas can be deforested if an effort isn’t made to maintain them. If a balance between progression and respect for the environment isn’t made, the world itself is likely to die off before the technology needed to survive the incoming meteor exists.

Community Is Everything
Community is often very important in survival games but I’ve never seen it implemented with the same level of depth as Eco. Players need to communicate often about the direction of the world and a robust system of government has (mostly) been implemented. Public officials can be elected and laws can be drafted and passed that change the experience significantly from one run to the next. Land can be claimed and owned privately or it can be public and shared by all residents of the world. Private land can have its authorizations changed to allow selected other players to be able to interact with it, such as using workbenches, opening doors, or chopping down trees. As society progresses, deeds to such lands can be offered for sale by the player-run government.

In addition to this government, an economy is likely to form with even a few residents. Specializing in skills, such as hewing or farming, is extremely important as it offers massive benefits. Hewing, for example, immediately reduces the resource consumption and processing time required to turn logs into hewn logs, an important resource used in many wood-based recipes including construction materials. As the skill is levelled, these bonuses only improve further, resulting in a resident having a profession that other players will want to take advantage of. This makes such talents useful not only for convenience but also for protecting the ecosystem as far as fewer natural resources need to be consumed in the process.

As more specialties are unlocked and pursued by residents, shops can be opened and set to both purchase from, and sell to, other players, at first with credit and later with an official manufactured currency. I took on the role of my world’s carpenter and received bonuses to housing and processing wood. I soon opened a shop of my own that sold assorted construction materials and furniture while purchasing any logs that other residents had collected.

Final Thoughts
At its current stage of Early Access, Eco is already a blast to play even if there’s still plenty of room for improvement. I played with four others and established a pleasant little village where each of us had our own land and role. There was a strong sense of community in a relatively low-stress setting, though I could see it being a bit more complicated initially if you’re playing with strangers or if a world ends up having a corrupt government. The features surrounding governance still seem to be a work-in-progress, or at least I hope they are as they require opening a browser separate from the game. I could see this feature being problematic for more casual players who are playing on less powerful machines. That said, the experience feels fresh and exciting and if development continues in the right direction at a steady clip, Eco could end up being a fantastic cooperative survival with innovative elements that only improve with each new resident that joins your world.

On paper this game is totally unique. It rewards co-operation and punishes competition. No one person 'wins'. Either everyone wins, or no one does. The problem is, no one plays it that way. People fight over specialisms, and end up competing with others in the same role. Everyone wants to mine, everyone wants to smelt. No one wants to farm. In a game based around the threat of global warming, everyone wants to destroy, no one wants to grow. No one talks about the central goal. They gets distracted by being the richest, or being the most successful. Maybe you could argue this game is a little too realistic.

Addicting minecraft for adults. Can spend an actual 40h of gameplay (not leaving it up and walking away) and still not be in the mid-game crafting tree.

This game is great, but it needs some serious tweaking for progression. I have a full day of gameplay and its easy to see the progression becomes exponetial o the point where all your time is spent pretty much mining. Thats if you have friends supplying you food all the while. I played with five friends and even though we worked together it is incredibly grindy. There has to be a better way to gather resources than picking up only up to 20 chunks of rock at a time. This is not single player friendly in the slightest and I would recommend playing with no less than 7-10 people.

From the 54 hours I've put into this game at the time of writing this review, I can't do anything but recommend this game. Eco is like if you too Minecraft and added some crack cocaine in the mix. Every decision you make matters. Every animal you kill affects the ecosystem. Even the furniture you have in your house is crucial to progression. If you want a game that you have to put time and effort in to progress, Eco is your game.

Really makes you think about what youre going to do and how youre going to do it because every action takes time and might have consequences but also the game leaves you with an immense amount of freedom throughout the progression of technologies

Bought this game on sale and it's proven to be a fun adventure worth the money. I liked the building, map, and ideas as well as tier progression. I think it has a lot potential to improve on many concepts and items not yet in the game. Better explanation/tutorial for certain buildings and how to hook up power, pipes and etc is needed. The grind is real, especially for iron ore. This gets a bit boring when playing solo, so I'd recommend joining a community or playing with friends.
