TOP FUN THINGS TO DO:
⭐️Plenty of weapons to find/use.
⭐️Kicking enemies off the map.

THE UNIQUES:
????Death metal while slaughtering enemies.

PLAYER GAMING REQUIREMENTS:
????Dark Fantasy.
????Souls-like.
????Action.

VERDICT:
I'll get the biggest issue out the way first.... it's soooo freaking short, I completed the whole story in 4.4 hours and that was with some short breaks. I didn't exactly rush this and I haven't done new+ and I probably won't due to seeing everything the game has to offer.

Now to the positives! The gameplay is very enjoyable, from kicking beasts into spikes all the way to swinging a mace in a skeletons face. The game pretty much keeps you engrossed for the entirety of the game, leaving you wanting more. This is no Dark Souls but it has everything to BE Dark Souls. The bosses are pretty fun but have the same pattern as each other so the same tactics does the trick.

The price is honest, you're getting what you paid for. Maybe a bit more, because you know.... Death metal.
Total Score = 77/100

CRASH! SMASH! TWANG! That's pretty much this game from start to finish. Think Dark Souls on speed, meets Serious Sam, with Vermintide Combat. It seems deceptively simple at first, but that same strategy that serves you well in DS will carry you through the day here.

Each of the varied enemies have a different technique that requires you to adapt accordingly. Enemy bosses are challenging. Graphics are simple and stylized, but effective. Think Valhaim style. It runs butter smooth.

Some back tracking needed as it’s sometimes hard to find that last key. After many hours of trying to find the key to the Blue Tower in act 3 I resorted to a hint online. -sometimes the order of operation or layout in the maps are confusing. Overall enjoyed my 12 hours of initial playthrough. It's fun enough to try going through the extra difficulty modes [including Iron Man] and trying to get those last achievements.

+Rockin' soundtrack
+Souls Like
+Variety of enemies
+Short and sweet
+Challenging but not impossible
+Cool melee weapons
-Female voice actor a little... meh. [Think Jim Carrey as 'Vera De-Milo' circa 'In Living Color' days. ;P
-Not very deep RPG-wise -leveling system pretty basic
-Ending is a little abrupt [like, whut? who was that? what's going on? Oh, its over?]

Had fun.

Metal AF.
Brilliant game
Takes a while to get used to the parry timings, as it's not always as predictable as you'd like and some moves are not all that telegraphed, but 99% of deaths are a skill issue. One of the most interesting games I've played.
Absolutely recommend at any price

Unrestrained meh

Elderborn is a first person action title which allows the player to embody ungodly ripped arms of a barbarian warrior on a quest to a forbidden city of tribal legends. Striding to deliver the sensation of a fast paced action, the game uses the first person perspective despite having exclusively melee combat. Run, dodge, parry and strike down hordes of enemies who had the misfortune of standing in your path. All of the above plays out to the tune of heavy metal soundtrack with a middle-eastern spin to it. Sounds good? Too bad, since the game is buried under layer of janky thick enough to contain a fossilised dinosaur. Admittedly, Elderborn does an okay job at delivering its own premise. However, the moment you start paying closer attention, it becomes apparent that every aspect of the game suffers from the general lack of polish. It only gets worse the longer you look.

History channel’s finest
Elderborn’s story opens with a simple notion of a tribal warrior’s journey to an ancient city in a quest to obtain eternal youth for the tribe’s elders. Fair enough, you don’t exactly play the pointy stick simulator expecting heights of narrative prowess. Unfortunately, after straightforward simplicity of the first chapter, the game just drops the ball in the second one – with introduction of whispering souls of the dead. Followed by an attempt at smoking the shattered remains of said ball, during the third chapter, delivering an ending that warrants a later separate mention.

Blunt force trauma
Beyond a shadow of a doubt, this title is all about the combat and while relatively basic, it is the most solid aspect of the game. Duo of light and strong attack, a block, a kick and a dash make for plain yet functional set of tools, allowing the player to cut down all that may stand in their way. Over the course of the game the barbarian finds a substantial arsenal of 10 weapons, divided into 5 categories. The game encourages the player to consistently switch held equipment as to employ the tool best fitting to the situation at hand. Elderborn’s fast-paced combat really can work, once the music kicks in and you slaughter dozen enemies in a blink of an eye. The game is able to deliver a satisfying sensation of being an unstoppable force. Sadly, this impression quickly fades, as the cracks start to appear.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2780121769
On paper, every single weapon in the game has a unique set of moves. In practice, the difference between an old blade and ceramic kopesh is that one can block and the other can parry. Namely, trim the numbers down to 5 as weapons within single category are too similar to truly affect the gameplay. Furthermore, Elderborn essentially leaves it up to the player to keep the combat diverse, as vast majority of the enemies don’t require any specific approach to combat. Every new weapon comes with an assigned challenge and it is highly recommended to play with their completion in mind. New game+ mode which allows the player to retain all their progress and equipment, quickly proved that with challenges done and the arsenal already familiar, fighting gets dull awfully fast. In the game all about fighting.

[strike]Bonfire lit[/strike] Fountain activated
To keep things a bit more varied, Elderborn has a simple levelling system, allowing the player to increase the barbarian’s damage, health and movement speed. With enough points spent into a single category, one may unlock a new skill such as an ability to tear off an enemy’s head and use it as a projectile or a second wind, giving the player a brief opportunity to avoid fatal damage. This title’s character progression is also what earned the game its Souls-like tag. Enemies, collectibles and breakable pots reward the player with essence, that may be spent at the water fountains. All unspent essence is dropped on the character’s death and may be retrieved from the spot of their untimely demise. However, once the player respawns or heals at the fountain, so do all the enemies on the map. Thus, one may grind to their heart’s content, patience is the limit.

Downward spiral
By now, you might’ve noticed an emerging pattern of how each respective aspect of Elderborn works. Namely, it makes a decent initial impression that gradually fades away the more time you spend with the game. The only exception from this rule would be the enemy design, as most of the enemies within the first chapter look downright miserable. The primary occupants of the catacombs are emaciated undead husks, covered with vibrantly-colored pustules. It may just be me, however killing them felt more like bullying than proper combat. Furthermore, their models are straight-up ugly, creating a poor initial impression of the game’s graphics. Frankly, Elderborn isn’t breathtaking at any point, however its aesthetic mix of middle-east and high-tech does have its moments further down the line. So does the enemy roster, as the second chapter introduces better equipped and much more formidable foes, given the player hasn’t refunded the game yet.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2780121619
To make matters worse, the game is consistently plagued by minor bugs throughout its roughly 5 hour runtime. The in-game physics being the primary offender in that regard. In Elderborn enemy corpses are composed primarily of gelatine, thus their bodies bend into the most awkward poses as they fall or worse, get stuck into the ceiling. Sadly, the only detachable part of the enemy is the head, as such every fight comes with full spectacle of weirdly dangling bodies. Truth be told, this all-encompassing jankiness has a certain charm, should you have a taste for such an experience. However, the above characteristics make a football-sized dent in Elderborn’s demeanour of being fast and brutal game. The latter gives way to a humorous angle that just doesn’t seem to be a part of the agenda.

If for whatever reason you would like to experience the Elderborn’s story for yourself, please avoid the spoiler-tagged section below. Otherwise, it’s time to address the vile cream of the rotten crop – the game’s ending.
Despite appearing to have three chapters, this title truly ends after the second bossfight. The final chapter is roughly 15-minutes long, literally drug-induced vision, which takes the player through a couple of small arenas populated by previously seen enemies. The increasingly random sequence concludes in the retrieval of a glowing mace. With this ultimate weapon in hand, the barbarian runs towards the light, batting away all the enemies with a single strike, only to reach a central chamber which reveals a large entity and the game just ends. What follows is a voice-over accompanied by the game’s credits, making a half-hearted attempt at explaining the nonsense that just took place on the screen. It could be summarised with beneficent aliens and easily makes for one of the most anticlimactic conclusions to a game I’ve seen in a while.
Fire and forget
Despite all the criticism I have for Elderborn I don’t regret the time I’ve spent with it. To me, this title’s jank spells guilty pleasure and I occasionally like to indulge. Should you happen to be looking for a smaller, simpler game to breeze through in a spare evening and never look back, Elderborn just may be the one. That said, the game in general suffers from a crippling lack of fine-tuning, butchering any potential its premise could possibly have. Instead Elderborn offers a humble price and doesn’t really bother hiding its true nature. However, the game not being terrible doesn’t make for a title worth recommending.

Elderborn is a fast-paced first person hack and slash.
It offers minimalistic exp based progression, many melee weapon types and a bunch of metal music.
It reminds me of games like Painkiller, Quake and Doom (from the old times) with a tiny pinch of “Souls-like”.
At first, I did not know if I like it or not, but it has grown on me and I just love slicing my way through the well-designed levels.

Visuals and Audio

To be honest, it neither looks beautiful nor ugly. It’s atmospheric for the most part.
Low resolution textures and some wonky animations make the game less attractive at times. The overall visual quality it alright, but lacks refinement.
But that's the biggest problem with the game. From here on out, everything is great.
Music is really fitting the gameplay. Fast-paced metal while fighting, chill mysterious/dark music while exploring. Some tracks are hella awesome and motivate to play the game full offense.

Gameplay

Elderborn starts to teach you the basics with efficiency. It tells you what to do, you do it once and done. No long introduction.

Choose a weapon type. Big and slow, tiny and fast, or something in between? You will find a big arsenal of melee weapons. Always keep your eyes open, you can miss some of them. Each has their own challenge attached, which teaches you the weapon and gives you an exp bonus after completing.
Some let you block others let you parry. In my mind parries is just the best thing you can pick. Enemy attacks can easily been learned within 2-6 kills. It’s a bit risky, but very rewarding.

Got enough exp to level up? You can decide between Might, Speed and Resilience.
The more you invest in one of these stats, you unlock up to 3 skills which amplify you gameplay further. Charge into your enemies, strike one down, rip their head off and throw it to the ranged enemy while parrying their projectile to deflect it in to the nearest enemy and die to a random trap on the ground you couldn’t know it was there. But dying is no penalty in this game. Respawn points (bonfires) are everywhere. Just try again. And if you suck too hard at it, you can always grind some exp to upgrade your resilience, for which I had no need yet.

Level design

Any stage in the game offers a somewhat big map with many secrets to find. Some parts are linear, some offer the possibility to climb wherever you want. If you invested enough points into Speed, you can even dash in midair. Go and explore how to sneak up your enemy.
You often need to find keys or sometimes special weapons to progress further. While looking for the next lever, you might step into a trap or find a wall to burst through with your sword to find some treasure. It won’t get boring.

TL;DR

Gud game. 8.5/10
Now leave me alone, I need to detach some heads.

Pretty fun, and pretty short. I played it on the hardest difficulty, beat everything pretty easily (just getting used to game mechanics). Not sure I'd want to do NG+, not like there is much exploration or anything other than killing to be done, maybe some little secrets. Fun for what it is.

I like first person games but there aren't many of them with good melee combat. This game gives player kick from Dark Messiah and allows to parry/dodge enemy attacks. Quite basic stuff but it works well combined with diverse enemy patterns and fun bosses (second one is great reference to dark souls). There are many (~12) different weapons to support different play styles (weapons have different animation and timings, extra effects, enemies have weaknesses to different kinds of damage, heavy weapons can throw enemies mid-flight while light weapons mostly allow parrying). I liked how game world is mostly seamless, second location was pretty big and game still was running smooth. Game uses old metal style with barbarians/alien machines/brutal apocalyptic world and I quite liked it. Nowadays it feels somewhat fresh in gaming. Unfortunately story is not engaging and lore is not very interesting. That is not very important as game is quite short (took me 3.5 hours on normal to finish) and gameplay carries you to the end and leaves wanting more.

There aren't many first-person melee games out there. Fewer yet are any good. ELDERBORN is one of the few that works really well. It's somewhere between Elder Scrolls and Vermintide. Meaning that most fights are much like Elder Scrolls with few opponents at any given time, but with polished controls of Vermintide. Including a small dash/dodge which is more useful that the little distance it covers.

The setting is very much show don't tell with a healthy dose of Grimdark and a pinch of sci-fi in an otherwise fantasy setting. I personally can't get enough of this kind of thing. But even non-fans, aren't going to get overwhelmed with it. Exploring the world is a nicety but far from needed.

My biggest issues are the boss fights aren't especially engaging much of the time. Which is fine, I am glad that ELDERBORN didn't go the Dark Souls route of skill/patience checks with them. For the most part, the weapon challenges aren't especially difficult, however; some so take to some work/luck. My favorite weapon is the hammer, and at the time of this writing, I still have completed it. Compared to a number of other weapons I don't even like I accomplished mostly by playing the game. Finally, the game does have a few bugs. My first death was after somehow clipping through a wall unable to get back. Another time happened 3 times, fighting the lightning wizard tower boss honorably (i.e. not just kicking him) where he teleported himself into a wall where he wasn't dead, but I couldn't attack him either.

If you like first-person melee type games that don't get overly complicated, ELDERBORN is definitely recommended.

I adore this game and now that its over the only thing I feel is a crippling depression taking its place. I never wanted it to end but end it did and my only major criticism is that the 3rd chapter felt hella rushed and ends somewhat abruptly.

The soundtrack is sick! find me someone who cant vibe to The call of Jurmum while dashing around the catacombs and kicking the undead in to oblivion.

Pretty good game. If you like older FPS games like doom, but don't mind a melee approach and less of a labyrinthian design then I think you'll enjoy this one.

It's a shorter game at around 4 hours on normal and trying to collect all of the chests. It probably takes another couple hours on a harder difficulty as I imagine you'll die more or have to damage enemies more to progress.

This game is pretty good for backtracking. You won't be locked into an area so if you missed something in a previous area, you can always walk back unlike other games of this type.

A real gem which is providing an outstanding visual experience, super smooth gameplay and fantastic enemy types & animations. The heavy soundtrack is fitting perfectly. The only downer for me is the low health indicator which is triggering much too early (~60% life), is looking terrible (bloodstain which is massively obscuring the view) and cannot be disabled. One has to get used to die often in order to progress, the difficulty level is tough. The melee only gameplay is demanding, but it got me hooked from the beginning. This game cannot be compared to any other, it's unique and much recommended.

Ok, so you have been playing Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and now you are trying to find similar game and fill that void inside of you.
I have bad news for you - THIS IS NOT IT!
Enemies are dumb as rock ( sees you and comes closer to attack), combat it self is booring and it is not satisfying at all.
I tried to play normal for first 5min and after realizing that combat is bad I just started dashing through and kicked everyone off the cliff. Made through level 3 (I guess), kicked some more spiders and I was done.
I do not recommend this game. Overall this is 5/10 game.
Note to others: This game might give motion sickness.

TLDR : Short but sweet FPS - where the S stands for Slasher. This should happen more often. Metal AF Brienne/Conan Simulator - Slice, Dice, Repeat. Recommended.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Pros & Cons :
+ Moment-to-moment gameplay is truckloads of fun
+ Level design is pretty good, so is the replayability
+ Ironman mode, multiple difficulties, very well balanced
+ Excellent chivvo list / one of my most enjoyable 100%
= Damn good Metal OST / but almost exclusively Metal
- Only two proper (long) levels, 3rd one is very short
- Only two proper boss fights, gimme MOAR
- Optimization is poor (fresh patch does help, still stingy on frames)
- Lacks basic QOL like map or markers or radar
--------------------------------------------------
Personal Verdict : 8/10 excellent fun for 10 - 20 hours tops
Could have been so much more, well worth price tag nonetheless

I enjoyed this game. Was like a weird marriage of a soulslike and an old school dungeon crawler with a fresh coat of paint. With some kick ass music and tons of weapons to collect, i recommend this to anyone willing to try a new FPS experience.

If you need your Dark Messiah of Might and Magic fix while enjoying some good ass metal and DOOM references then go on ahead.

After parrying a dude with some sickles, killing them in slow-mo, ripping off their head from their corpse and stunning their friend with it while going on to parry a thrown spear and reflecting it into the thrower killing them and then heavy attack finishing the stunned dude I knew this game was amazing, and then there were even more dudes to absolutely demolish left in the room, what a delight.

ELDERBORN isn't outright bad, but I didn't feel compelled to see this one through. It doesn't really do anything special here, even with the melee system. I've had more fun using melee systems from other games (Chivalry, MORDHAU, Condemned: Criminal Origins). Not this one, though.

Never gets old

While the game is kind of short (once you figure out the layout of the levels) and the weapons and skills variety is a bit lacking, it's the gameplay loop that carry this game. The rhythm of combat, the honing of our reflexes and the awesome slowmo decapitations, it's all so addicting. Top notch game!

Off to a good start, packed with action. Suddenly you enter a city and it becomes an empty walking simulator. It was such a crass contrast that I got severely bored and disappointed after 1 hour (from that point on) with barely any enemies.
I mean, the game is centered entirely around non-stop action, what gives, guys?

I'll be honest with you folks , i dont really understand what is all the fuss about here.

Now, dont get me wrong, i'm not trying to say that ELDERBORN is just a bad game , but frankly it is way more blown out of proportion by some people and reviewers than it actually is then you play it yourself.

One can admit that whole DOOM reboot meets Dark Souls is a very compelling and 'sellable' premise on paper but both have a very shallow impact on the end product. Dark souls are solely represented by it's weakest aspects like 'UH IT'S HARD' and 'UH LET'S MAKE ALL ENEMIES RESPAWN AFTER YOU DIE AND MAKE SOME VARIANT OF BONFIRE' , both of which aren't what made Soulsborne games so good anyway. DOOM is represented mostly by attempt to imitate Mick Gordon's soundtrack and fast paced, brutal combat which again is not bad , but in the end feels like just a marketing tick box rather than a true inspiration.

It's also important to mention that game is really short ( 3 hours short actually ) and has next to none replay value outside just bumping up the difficulty which , at least for me , again , is not what made Soulborne series to replayable.

There's also distinct lack of ... anything really. Even in those 3 hours you pretty much fight same few types of enemies with few same weapons ( yes there actually are plenty of weapons in this game but they can be easily sorted into few categories and each weapon in same category is pretty much just a reskin of one another ) and last level , minor spoiler alert, is just series of arenas there you are swarmed by the same enemies you have been fighting last 3 hours. Super dull and uninspiring. And yeah, this game has most blatant Ornstein and Smough copycats i have ever seen.

On the positive side game is quite fun for a brief amount of time it lasts. Combat is quite responsive and fast paced. Performance is also decent outside few areas in a second chapter there FPS just tanks down for no appearant reason.

All in all , it's not a BAD bad game , it's just hardly as good as a lot of people will make you believe. If you can get it for ~5$ it's a decent fun for couple of hours but it's mediocracy sadly shines through every single gap.

Great gameplay, I had a lot of fun for 10+ hours. You need precision to fight with mobs, you need tactics to fight most of enemies, its not easy but also not too hard at the same time (tried hard mode),
There is about 10-11 weapons, few similar to each other (same fighting style but weapons have different perks) but overall the diversity was enough for the time ive spent playing the game but when considering long term playing the it'd be boring.
There are only 3 chapters. Good players can finish them all in 10+ hours. NG+ only increases mobs stats so they hit harder and have more health. Nothing exciting there. If you get the tactics to fight mobs in the first playthrough then its the same second time. it isnt as fun anymore. Additionally some mobs have a buff (violet-aura). New empowered violet monsters are a joke. 1 hit and you are dead (doesnt matter how much hp you have. you always will be 1-hitted to death. just for testing purposes, before stopping playing I cheated my lvl to a very high, most probably impossible to achieve value and I was still dying with 1 hit). So basically if you dont get achievements related to finishing a specific chapter without dying in a first try then most probably it wont happen in ng+.

My rating for this game is 3,5/5. Get it with discount, have fun for few hours (which is worth it considering how cheap the game is with discount) and forget about it afterwards.

I had quite a bit of fun with my first play through of this. Finished in about 6 hours, with a bit of extra exploring and backtracking thrown in. It can be difficult but mostly is fair. The timing on enemy attack patterns takes some getting used to, every single one (including enemies with similar attacks like leap-strikes) are different.

The different weapons are pretty fun, although don't seem super balanced. Parry weapons seems incredibly better than block weapons even though block prevents all damage. Some of the challenges are kind of grindy or not fun to complete but most of them you can do naturally or with a little extra work.

The biggest single complaint I would have, is there are achievements for looting every chest and killing every enemy in a level, but there is absolutely 0 way to help you track down some secluded (or not secluded) one of those you missed. This could conceivably add hours to your playtime just circling a level over and over again if you want to 100% it without a guide. I HIGHLY recommend one of the guides for chest locations especially if you want to do it, there are ones I legitimately never would have found on my own I don't think. Similarly with the enemy one - I circled a level multiple times, and even an extra time following a chest guide, trying to find what enemies I didn't kill to finish that stages' achievement but never got it. Maybe it was bugged out of the arena or maybe I just super duper missed it somehow but with no way to ever know I just had to give up on it with 1-2 kills between me and that achievement.

So, the combat is fun, the level design is quite excellent overall, the setting is interesting, the progression is a little slow at times but nice overall. But I think unless you LOVE, love grinding hours for extra loops, I wouldn't recommend it for completionists, as it has trouble in that area.

A very shallow game with embellished marketing materials. This is definitely not souls-like in the slightest and it barely has any RPG progression (add meaningless points to increase damage or attack speed by tiny percentages). I guess they did rip off the Ornstein and Smough boss fight so points for that I guess?

The game is disappointingly short, clocking in at a whopping 4 hours and only contains a whole 2 maps / levels. Yes that is right, two. It technically has a third but its basically just a quick 10 minute sandbox mode.
The story is awful and pure filler, the voice acting is terrible, cutscenes are just cheaply animated story boards leaving just the gameplay...which was fairly repetitive and uninteresting. The music is fairly good but doesn't have a lot of variety to it.

Summary: Very short, not like dark souls in the slightest, melee only combat is meh, level design can make your head spin, there is no overhead map, story is throw away, only two whole levels, boring enemy design, just spam level click to win, and not really metal AF. Go play Doom instead.

A 2 out of 10.

This is not a horrible game, however I would not recommend it to my friends.

PRO:
- fulfills 'Conan' fantasy
- it is short and not artificial prolonged like many games these days (took me about 5 hours total)
- different weapons are good against different enemies

CON:
- voice overs are cringeworthy
- story is generic and boring, even if you can stand not skipping the short cutscenes
- loot just consists of essence (=souls) and pre-placed weapons, there are no other items
- there is a bossfight which is a 1:1 copy of Ornstein & Smough from Dark Souls 1, but it lacks everything which makes the fight so great in DS1. As a DS fan, this one felt almost insulting.
- last chapter (end of game) feels like it was thrown together, very bad quality

I also want to mention that the game ran very bad for me, but I did play it on Linux using Proton, so that might be the cause and thus I don't put it in the CON list.

You should play ELDERBORN because it has a kick button. All games with kick buttons are excellent, and ELDERBORN has one of the most satisfying kicks since Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, the patron saint of kicking.

If kicks alone aren't enough and you need more to go on—weirdo—you should also play ELDERBORN because it's pretty damn great. The developers compare it to (takes a shot) Dark Souls, but it's really more like an Elder Scrolls game by way of DOOM—2016 DOOM in particular. Did you love stomping around Oblivion gates and crushing scamps with the heaviest stick possible to watch them hilariously ragdoll down the cliffs? That's ELDERBORN, basically.

Though to be clear, the combat is waaaay more compelling than anything Todd's ever given us. There's around 5 basic weapon types with variants of each (like DOOM and many clones) and each one a) feels good and b) has its place. Fast little jerks? Knock them silly with a well timed mace. Shielded cowards? Parry them with the spear and then open them up with the counterattack. Slow dumb idiots? Dart in and out with katar flurries. Hail of bullets? Block them all with your absurd buster sword, or parry them back with the right upgrade to really feel like the coolest fing person alive.

I did get a little turned around at times in the massive and nested levels. Unfortunately, like Oblivion gates and the mazier DOOM episodes, it's real easy to get lost, forget which keys go where, miss switches and what have you. It evens out a bit once you pass the caves—I started picking up on a lot of clever environmental clues in the more open spaces—but retracing your steps does dampen the feeling of being an bloody unstoppable blood juggernaut of blood.

Like Valfaris before it, I can't say the heavy metal aesthetic is quite my thing. But ELDERBORN is so ridiculously over the top that I could appreciate the feeling of hacking through the cover of a symphonic metal album. I'm always down for more games that play like undisputed classic Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and ELDERBORN pretty perfectly fills that niche.

Super short (3.5 hours on Normal, then the same on Elderborn) but very sweet. Dark Messiah combat meets Dark Souls-inspired bonfires and level design (sometimes). The first half of the game in the Caves is alright, but the second half in the City is where Elderborn explodes open and really hits its stride. Total fast paced fun with no major fumbles apart from some very annoying projectile-based enemies and some truly awful voice acting.

Unfortunately Elderborn is over in the blink of the eye, and I imagine that's why I don't see it discussed or recommended more often. Without unlocks there's really not much reason to keep returning to the same 3.5 hours of content again and again. I'd have loved more bosses and a third area as expansive as the City.

Definitely recommend, but wait for a good sale unless you intend to be playing it several times to get your value from it.

Melee combat hasn't been this good since Dark Messiah, and even then, Elderborn has enough distinctively designed mechanics that keep the flow of combat fresh between the myriad encounters. Enemy variation opens right up in the second chapter and the composition of the encounters ensures that you are always on the edge of your seat.

This was not a game I expected to lose my entire weekend to, but I don't regret it one bit. This is the style of combat that has been missing from medieval RPG's for years.

A good first person hack'n'slash. Skill based combat with Metal soundtrack, and a bunch of challenges and upgrades.
Only real downside is the short campaign, but the new game + gives replay value.

Hope they make a 2nd part, the lore, atmosphere and gameplay are a solid foundation.

This is another one of the cases where I wish ''maybe'' was an option.

Let's start with the game's biggest positive in my opinion: The art direction. It could be my own personal bias, but I love the way the game presents itself. It goes from slashing your way through crypts to a sort of sci-fi-ish grimdark theme, and I'm all here for it. The regular enemies are nothing too unique, but they fit the aesthetic and are varied enough to keep you on your toes, especially on harder difficulties. The weapons all look awesome and there's a lot more of them than I initially expected, which helps with offsetting the repetitive nature of the game. Plus, you can kick enemies off ledges, which is awesome.

And now we have the reasons why I don't think this game is worth your time. As a fan of hack-and-slashers, I know too well that games like these live and die by their melee mechanics, and I feel like Elderborn fails in that department. Unless you are using one of the heavier weapons, the combat feels floaty, unimpactful and boring. I started playing on hard and switched to normal for the sole reason of being able to almost exclusively use the maces, since the lighter weapons all feel incredibly lackluster. Its like if you take Skyrim's combat and strip away all the RPG elements that make it passable. I feel like this game could've really benefited from adding more visual impact and gore; maybe different ways of executing enemies or severing limbs if you are using a blade - something to make you feel like you aren't just whacking away at an asset with a rubber mallet regardless of what you are using, since it makes the aforementioned weapon variety kind of pointless. Sure, there are the decapitations, but I don't feel like that's enough, especially for a game that revolves around its melee.

I don't mind that Elderborn is short (took me around 8 hours to beat), but what I do mind is the ending - which I won't spoil but let's just say it's really abrupt - and the bosses. Normally I'd be disappointed, but in this case I was glad that there were only two boss encounters in the entire game, since both of them were lazily designed and ridiculously easy. They have virtually all same mechanics as a normal enemy and are dealt with in in pretty much the same way, only instead of bashing through hordes you are sloooowly chipping away at a wall of health and waiting for it to die. Imagine all the worst aspects of a Dark Souls boss and make it even more of a boring slog.

It sucks, since this game could've been something awesome. Its not a bad game though, so if you manage to get it on discount like I did, you might get some enjoyment out of it.

This game is a weird, janky mess. Right from the start I noticed sluggish movement and attack speed, weakling enemies with no health and even lower attack damage, a healing item that regenerates passively as you kill these enemies, and a complete lack of a desperately needed stamina system. Let's go into further detail one-by-one.

Slow Movement

As soon as you start the game up you are guided through a series of tunnels at a snails pace. The only way to increase this movement speed is in an incredibly incremental way that entirely discourages me from playing any further (1% at a time). But you trudge on anyway hoping that maybe the combat is better. You see the first enemy, and the game mentions The Kick™ (which we will return to) and then puts you in a 1v1 with a weak enemy to get you acquainted with the game's feel. As you take a swing, you realize it's gonna be one of *those* games. A Lords of The Fallen type, where all the attacks are way too slow. So already the combat is at the major disadvantage of being slow, which is made exponentially worse by the next issue, that being:

The Weak Enemies

The enemies of this game somehow manage to move and attack slower than you, deal miniscule amounts of damage (even on the second hardest difficulty) and are prone to be in large groups, the only place where they seem effective. So it's not only got the sluggish pace of LoTF, but the ganky and un-fun enemies of Dark Souls 2? Wow, what a joy, which is exactly what I'm feeling right now. To get back on track:

The Healing Vials

These are completely useless unless you just got out of a ganky area, and even then there's usually a well nearby anyway, this game's attempt at bonfires, but somehow even that simple concept got malformed in the heavy set hands of the devs. The vials heal basically all of your health in one go, can be cancelled out of with either an attack or dash (same goes for all the attacks btw), and regenerate upon killing enemies, so imagine if the Humanities in Dark Souls could be used significantly faster and with a greatly lowered chance of punishment. The ability to not only dash, but spam dashes while using them just utterly breaks the risk-reward element of healing in Soulslike games, which leads to:

The Lack of a Stamina System

This absolutely breaks the game, honestly. It is stupidly easy to spam kicks and dashes, and it's not fun either. Remember when I mentioned The Kick™ earlier? Well now is it's time to shine. The Kick™ comes out aggressively fast, has ridiculous range, is hitscan, and knocks enemies back farther as you go up in difficulty. I think that was a band-aid fix to The Combo™, which is where you just F+M1 spam until everything is dead and you never get hit once. Because enemies are knocked back farther it becomes more and more difficult to perform The Combo™, however because enemies almost exclusively exist in narrow corridors that either have pits or corners next to them, you can just knock them off or Combo™ them anyway. Now onto the dash, the dash is just there to clean up your mistakes and dodge spears. It doesn't go very far, is very easily spammed, and once again doesn't drain any kind of resource.
All in all, this game very much feels like a Unity Project, with buggy gameplay, exploits that just degrade the already easy combat, and an at-best strange design philosophy.
Tl;Dr: Game is slow, boring, and exploitable as hell.

I really wanted to like this game and the beginning seemed very promising and polished as I was looking for a Dark Messiah experience. Then it became stale and less polished after the second act of the game. The level design of the first act was what made it intruiging. The caves, the exploration of new weapons and enemies, and the linear level design was perfect for the immersive sim I was looking for. If they had just focused on that for the full game it would've made me want to recommend it. Then the second act entered which tried to be something totally different and broke a lot of things for me (including the overall performance of the game). Third act felt really rushed to finish off this review. Really unfortunate.

The idea behind this game is cool, as there aren't all that many first person melee combat games out there.
Problem is, it's just too janky. The parrying never feels tight, the attacks don't have the right weight, every movement you make feels awkward, it's not clear when you're successfully hitting enemies.
Jus not tight enough for a recommendation.

Not on even close to Dark Messiah

This is one of those games where neither the thumb up or thump down really fits but since everyone else are so positive it comes to me to give a reality check.

This is a melee combat focused game where the melee combat is not very impressive. Enemies don't react believable to being hit and aren't very fun to fight against. It is not awful but it is not good either and i would expect more. Because of this is i grew bored quite quickly

Dark Messiah came out 15 (!!) years ago and sadly this is not on par with it. Perhaps i set my expectations too high but either way this game failed to keep my interest.

Excellent gameplay. It's a first person shooter, where you only have melee weapons.

Feels a bit like DMoM&M, without the bow, the magic or the RPG part. You do have the foot kick, though, and plenty of cliffs to kick enemy off. And a little fewer spike-studded planks conveniently laying around. Technically there's two ranged skills, one about reflecting enemy projectiles with a well-timed parry, the other about ripping fallen enemies heads and throwing them on others. But don't let this mention of skills fool you, while there's XP to gather and a skill tree, it's skeletal, as the focus isn't on fancy skills or leveling up.

It's all about the ten melee weapons that you'll gradually acquire through the game. Each have their peculiarities, their little perks and drawbacks, their subtleties to learn, making them suited to different situation, or letting you handle the same situation in varied ways, and I found myself naturally alternating between them without any feeling better than the others.

The first level is an unoriginal tomb/cave filled with undeads, but the second level, an open city with varied enemies, is much better. Sadly there's only those two levels and an epilogue. I still found myself replaying it a couple times, which is exceptional for me, because it felt so good.

I entered this game as a 14 year old, babyfaced virgin.
I swear to the Allfather Odin, 86mins later, all i see now is Beard and i'm pretty sure i own a chopper aswell.
I burned my Bosses house to the ground over an minor arguement and took his wife, as she is mine now.

If you want create souls-like game make sure u create world where a player feels fair treated if he die it will be because of him, not because devs put a fukton of annoying enemys near eachother where you literally have to dodge, parry, block, jump and use different weapons at the same time all in small area and a honorable mentioned wizard with aimbot laser. Its frustrating and triggering... but... but i like this game and even when im malding im back again in game.

Great game, very fun - makes me want to try other first person melee games.

Neat enemy design, variety and placement. Cool weapons (though some are a bit copy/paste). Interesting challenges. Mostly useful skills to unlock via leveling.

While I don't mind the short-ish length of the first play through, I do wish it was longer with another area and more bosses.

Fun game worth on a sale. The combat feels great when you start to understand it and the exploration is nice.

The biggest flaw is how short it is. I finished in 4 hours and I had 70% completion.

There are 2(or 1 not sure) major bugs I found.
After finishing the second chapter I had a shield that was crossed out in the middle of the screen and couldn't look anywhere but in front.
The second one (I think it's a bug) in NG+ the Diehard perk wasn't working anymore.

I'd say this is a very good game with a few flaws that keep it from achieving greatness. It's got great core gameplay and great music. The game takes around 5-6 hours for a typical run-through. Melee combat is very satisfying. I wish there were more games like this one. I hope this developer takes lessons learned from this game and makes another like it - I'd gladly buy it again at the current price point, and would take a chance on a more expensive sequel if it looked promising.

Nitpicks:
The visual direction is good, but incomplete in some places, and some of the environments are a little lackluster or suffer from repeated assets. Sometimes enemy placement feels a little unpolished. There was one particular fight on the blue tower that was borderline sadistic (at least, on the hard difficulty). Some enemies don't seem to telegraph attacks super well - which is manageable on the regular game, but on new game+ they can deal an enormous amount of damage. I also missed a couple of the weapons on my first run of the game (the katars and the Golden Spear).

TLDR: I'm 3 hours in so far. Definitely worth full price, a steal at $10. Feels and sounds amazing. It has some of those same 'flow' moments I remember from DOOM where you're intensely focused, the music hits just right and the feeling is nearly orgasmic. Cool atmosphere, interesting variety of enemies that require different approaches and some of the tightest combat I've played. Also, if the first hour feels terrible, give it a chance, the combat takes some getting used to.

Before buying this I saw a quote saying it was like DOOM meets Might and Magic. I can say now, that is a somewhat appropriate comparison. I'd say it's closer to DOOM with swords and kicking, and I mean that as a compliment. This game really captures the fast frenetic pace of classic FPS's and to my surprise, the first person sword play feels great. Combat feels weighty yet fast, aided by really solid sound design and animations. I've only gotten a small taste of the sound track so far, but I've been very impressed with what I've heard. It's not afraid to have quiet moments with subtle ambiance and then explode into something brain melting.

Fairly early on, you get 4 weapons and each feels distinct and useful in different scenarios. They all affect movement speed differently, you can parry with some and block with others, and enemy variety mean's you'll be quick swapping between them often, which feels great.

There's a progression system that feels tacked on, but doesn't detract. You could look at it as a way of slowly introducing new tools.

As for story, I have no idea. There are inscriptions to find and an opening cut scene...which I skipped, not because it was bad, but because I wanted to get into the game that badly. You'll have to check a different review for notes on story.

Minor complaints:

These don't detract from the game, but there are a few mechanics thrown in that feel like they don't belong and were added to invite comparison. For example, it has the same 'pick up lost souls' mechanic from Dark Souls, I found myself quickly ignoring them because there are no items to buy and levels seem to come quickly and effortlessly anyway. Some of the borrowed mechanics are great, for example the 'rally' system from bloodborne where you restore lost health by dealing damage, it works great and is a great addition. But at the same time it has a master system, where you master a weapon once you've used it enough, but the reward is a 5% damage increase...completely insignificant. Similarly the upgrade system is shallow and feels like a weird addition. It doesn't add anything and the level ups are incremental increases to speed, health and damage, which are also not noticable. I find myself leveling as quickly as possible at health fountains to get back into the game. It doesn't feel like you're building a character, for example there isn't room to build a speedy glass cannon as opposed to a tank because there are no other RPG elements.
My biggest wish for the future of this game is that is isn't afraid to take risks and be it's self, because it does frantic first person melee combat so well already.

Maybe I had my expectations set too high from all the positive reviews but the whole experience is just kinda meh. Maybe barely worth it on a sale for some mindless hacking while listening to a podcast, but this is nothing to write home about.

Level design is very linear and allows for virtually no exploration. Very little sense of wonder is evoked. Character development is shallow and gives you very little to look forward to. Combat is just passable, repetitive and doesn't give you that visceral feel that can be so fun from first person melee combat done right. Graphics are below par. Enemies and weapons are uninteresting and uninspired.

Elderborn has 4 difficulty levels and it defaults to the 3rd. It says that you can change the difficulty at any time with no downsides. So, I jumped in on the difficulty they gave me, and started killing dudes. After a thrilling 2 hours of playtime, I had enjoyed killing hundreds of enemies while plundering the dungeon; cutting them down 3 at a time, and booting them off cliffs. Finally, they put me against a boss, which took me a couple of tries to defeat. At which point, I saw the first loading screen since the game began, and the second map of the game loaded.

I repeat. After 2 hours, I had reached stage 2.

Damn.

it is Doom with melee weapons only:

short 7-15 hours campaign

amazing graphics and AMAZING mechanics. lots of different weapons and really well designed enemies. The Difficulty is totally adjustable like the whole key configuration.

i bought it on full price, because the price is also a feature like the whole game. i wish this game would last 30+ hours, but there is also a NG+ mode that comes with marked enemies who can one shot you.

an absolutely legit videogame product. Keep an eye on those developers and on the guy who did the soundtrack!

Please save yourself the money even if this is on discount, the game is three levels and you get 4 different weapons with reskins. On top of that the game is mechanically flawed in the sense that parries don't trigger during their full window of the blip coming up on the hud, same with blocking. Enemies give no xp so you can maybe get one tree in a full playthrough but also a full tree is having THREE SKILLS, therefore progression is pathetic. All in all this sounded like the game would be right up my alley but in actual practice this is barely a functional video game even after all the updates they've put into it.

Most of the game is pretty fun. I would absolutely be giving this a positive review, if it weren't for two things: The general bugs - braindead enemy AI that can't pathfind to save its life, lag as soon as combat of any kind starts, etc.

And.

In the second segment of the game, there are two kinds of 'boss' enemies on the top of the three towers you need to climb. Their encounters are all absolutely awful. The least offensive is the Lightning-type boss, whose attacks are so pitifully slow that it's almost amusing. Naturally, he has the most cover in his arena, which is where it's needed the least. I consider this an awful encounter because it's so incredibly easy compared to the others that it emphasises how broken they are.
The other boss, the fire-type, is far, far more frustrating to deal with. You fight that type twice, and both times the arena is wide open, with no opportunity to reliably avoid damage from his nigh-instakill attacks. While you fight the various enemies scattered around his arena, which are generally no walk in the park either (but at least a fair challenge, if it weren't for the lag... Seriously, the CPU and GPU requirements for this game are far below what they should be), you need to dodge his attacks... Which are instant, and impossible to predict.
If you've played the game, you might comment that each attack is highly telegraphed - a red laserbeam tracks your every move around the arena, after all. Unfortunately, because it is constantly tracking you, it's basically useless. A big improvement to the fight mechanics would to simply only start showing the laser for a second before the attack actually begins. As it is, you have to try and track a small red laser through the chaos on screen, notice when it stops moving, then consider what direction you've been moving in and dodge out of the way of the actual attack - which sweeps in a line between where it starts and where you were when it started, dealing an insane amount of damage.

Sadly it's just not possible to recommend this game when it forces you into encounters like this. There is nothing more frustrating than having to climb up the spiral ramp for the dozenth time, knowing full well that you'll probably go down to another cheap shot in just a few moments. I suppose if you don't want to go through the story and would rather just grind mindlessly against the enemies in the areas around the towers, it'd be worth playing - after all, the core combat and gameplay loops are pretty damn fun.

OK, so this has come as a complete surprise to me. I saw an offer, I bought it and played 3 hours straight on Elderborn difficulty.
Despite being challenging at first once I got used to the controls I was slashing right through the levels. This is great for stress relief. I guess I would like to hear stronger metal playing or it playing more often but it's still a great damn game.

10/10 I actually wrote a review.

At first this looks like an awesome mix between doom and dark souls but it fails on the most important aspect of these games and that's the combat . The weapons are supposed to be balanced but they really are not. The hammer is the strongest weapon since it can destroy the shield dudes. The tradeoff is supposed to be that it is slow, but if you start charging a strike and dash in to the enemy exactly when the blow lands and dash out then the enemies can't do anything about it. It also deal a lot of damage. So, now you get an incredibly mobile fast striking weapon with no downsides. There is no limit on how much you can dash. You can dash all the time and the enemies can't handle it. If you figure this out, then the combat becomes an annoying chore.

The other aspect of the game is the exploration and level design which suck. You have to collect four mcguffins in a relatively large level to progress. There is no map or any indicator on where you should go. So somewhere I missed a breakable wall or something like that and now I have to go through everything again to find the fourth mcguffin. Problem is my sense of orientation is not worth shit and the bigger problem is that I don't like the combat enough to be willing to run around checking every corner.

The graphics are not that great either so i stopped playing. If I could I would refund this but I got it gifted a long time ago.

TLDR: The combat is broken. Don't buy this.

Only buy under heavy discount - game is only 2.5 hours long. just enough to get it out of the refund range...

+ Combat itself if very enjoyable, i think devs made a fantastic job making a first person souls-like combat. Fights are fast paced, there's no stamina bar nor cooldown on dash (dodge). It's quite easy to loose yourself in a violent loop of fucking shit up!

- Severe lack of content. Game only has 3 levels. While first two might take you an hour or so to beat, last one is laughably short, consisting of handful of arenas and semi scripted sequence where you are given an OP mace, one-shotting everything. You would expect an epic boss fight to follow, but no - you just activate a switch and the game just ends.

Speaking of bosses, there are only 2 in the entire game...and one of them is just a ornstein and smough ripoff lol. But I must say that the fights themselves are pretty fun and provide adequate challenge (I completed the game on Elderborn difficulty and recommend you do the same).

I don't know what people who say there's nice weapon variety are smoking. There are basically 3 types of weapons in game (Heavy swords and maces/ jack of all trades sword/ fast daggers). Yes you find a handful of weapons during the game, but they are just re-skins with increased DPS. There's literally 0 reason to use previous weapon of the same type once you found an upgrade.

Game has an OK enemy variety, but I dont like the fact that almost all enemies from first level are reskinned for level 2 and level 3 doesnt have ANY unique enemies at all!

Overall a very short, be it a pleasant experience. Once again, only buy this if you know what you are getting yourself into or....just refund after 2 hours of play, its not like you are missing out on much. I hope devs will be able to make a sequel to this thing which would have ACTUAL content - as gameplay basis is here and it is strong.

Game is too short, has serious level design and performance problems in the second chapter (out of 3, third one is really short too).
Skill system is pretty lackluster, being mostly stat upgrades and abilities that are not that practical in combat (such as throwing enemy heads).
Feels more like a melee-only shadow warrior than Dark Messiah, even if there is a kick function.
Combat is solid anyways so maybe its worth if on sale and if you are willing to tolerate some amounts of bullshit.

Not gonna downvote this game at all. That said I did refund it. I myself looked at the videos and read other people saying how it played like Dark Messiah of M&M(not the chocolate covered peanuts).

It's way more arcadey then that and it's a fine game just not what I was looking for and something else that somehow just doesn't come through in the vids is that the graphics are a really simple really basic type. I am not a graphics snob at all but I like my dirty dungeons dark and damp and just...more detailed. Couldn't get into it but I know many will like it.

As described, Doom meets Souls meets Conan. The gameplay is frenetic and crazy fun. Lots of strategy, figuring out the timings for blocking and parrying, using the right weapons for the right situation. Great music, unique setting and look.

I do wish they'd redo the voiceovers though; sounds like they were recorded in someone's bedroom.

Based on the first 4 hours of play, I can certainly recommend this game in it's current state. I've read a few reviews of previous iterations, and I can see that the developers are continuing to improve on it, so I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Gameplay: 10/10 Dark Messiah Souls is a very apt description. Combat is deliberate more than twitchy, flows well, punishes mistakes, but is ultimately fair.
Level design for the first level is decent, with enough variety to keep it from being dull. There are plenty of places to kick people to their doom to keep it interesting without being the go to option, as there are many more where you're frantically working your way through tunnels and halls trying to find a decent spot to deal with all these monsters trying to rip you apart.
The weapons feel fairly distinct, and so far I've found situations for most of them where one is clearly a better option.
The levelling and customization are decent. Choices definitely make an impact on gameplay. I am looking forward to playing through with different builds. My first was a speedy build, and I really felt that I was faster as I leveled up.
Story: 7/10 Very very reminiscent of Robert E Howard and the Conan genre. You are a mighty barbarian sent to destroy eldritch powers with just your sword (and hammer, and spear, and sicles). Props on a female as well as male option.
Voice acting for the female is good. I feel like there could have been a bit more sound tweaking though. She sounds very enthusiastic and confident, but something about the sound quality put me in mind of an actor reading lines rather than a barbarian narrator.
The ambient music is top of the line, very thematic for a brutal metal dungeon.
Graphics: 8/10: I'm playing on a laptop, and had to turn things down a bit to keep things running smoothly. That said, the design is nice, and immersion is easy.
Value: 10/10: I picked this up with a small discount, and would happily pay the full price their asking.

Conan by way of Dark Messiah and Mick Gordon worship. Vestigially Soulslike in all the right ways. Letdown mostly by the lameness of the Unity engine and lack of a larger budget to really polish everything to perfection.

At 15 bucks it's an absolute steal though. Recommended for anyone who loves muscles, muscle women and muscular combat full of pinpoint dodging and big fucking slams.

Overview

A small indie studio, Hyperstrange, managed to create an enjoyable experience for the most part. ELDERBORN is a brutal action first-person melee game with a few Souls-like mechanics. The game inspires its stylization by the Conan universe, written by Robert Ervin Howard. For its price of 12.49€, I can easily recommend this game despite its several shortcomings.

Pros & Cons

Pros
 • The fast-paced combat system is enjoyable and requires a decent amount of skill on higher difficulty settings.
 • For its length, the game offers enough weapon types. Weapons also have challenges, that increase their effectiveness once completed.
 • Locations in the first two chapters are well made, and they have several secrets and collectibles.
 • Enemy variety is done well for the most part, and the game does not get boring, as the enemy types are well placed and combined differently in each section.
 • The unlockable skills, such as ripping and throwing heads from bodies, are enjoyable to use.

Cons
 • The last chapter of the game, along with its ending, absolutely drops down in the quality. It is way too short, unoriginal, and even without a proper boss or conclusion.
 • There are two boss fights and both of them very simple, as you can parry most of their attacks.
 • Performance decreases in the second and third chapters, as there are unoptimized special effects that annoyingly drop your framerate.
 • Balance issues with weapons are present, as some you get way too late to level them up without grinding, or they are simply not as good.
 • You also cannot teleport between locations or chapters. Due to that, you are stuck in the third act and have to start a new game.

In-Depth analysis

Story

At the start of the game, one must choose between a male and a female. This choice is purely cosmetic and does not offer anything more, as the story is still the same. As a current champion, you are the chosen one who tries to find the secrets of the city of Jurmun. And that is all you need to know. There are, of course, lore codexes that explain a background a little but do not expect a full story. Unfortunately, the ending is very disappointing, and it does not provide a proper conclusion.

Gameplay

The game offers four difficulty settings from Normal to Metal AF, which is maybe a way too hard, but it provides the challenge you might want.

Combat
The combat sustains of standard light/heavy attack moves. You can also throw enemies out of balance by kicking them, which is very useful, especially if they have shields. There is no stamina, so you can attack as much as you like. Each weapon also has a block or parry option, depending on the weapon type. As for the movement, you can dash away, which is very useful, and at least from my own experience, it makes a block option rather useless. The game lets you know when the attack can be parried or not via icons. This system works great, but it lessens the difficulty a bit as you exactly know what you can expect. So, the player does not need to learn attack patterns of enemies as much as he/she could learn, because the game always shows them via icons.

Although there is a decent amount of weapons, all of them are only for melee. There are several challenges that increase your weapons’ attack power or give you a large amount of XP. As for the ranged weapons, there are none. The bow would not fit there, but if you could throw your spear and reclaim it, it would make combat more interesting. The only thing you can throw are heads of dead enemies if you unlock the skill for it, but the damage is quite low.
The game fails to balance the weapons properly, as some of them are found towards the end, or they are not as powerful as their predecessors.

Character management
There are fountains that work as bonfires in a Dark Souls series. If you die, you respawn at the last visited fountain. The enemies respawn, as well. At the fountain, you spent essence for leveling up three different paths: health, damage, or speed. There are a few skills for each of these paths. Some of the skills, like rush, have a cooldown. As mentioned before, you can throw heads of fallen foes, but it is not an efficient weapon.

Environment
The first chapter is quite linear without any sideways. However, the second chapter provides a different approach, where you can slightly choose where you go first. As you can jump and climb up on the ledges, you can freely climb up on a building and surprise your enemies.

There are several enemy types with different weapons and abilities. Our hero fights against skeletons, scorpions, mages, and other filth. Enemies are not the only problem there, as traps are present, as well. They are not that deadly, though, as you can quickly avoid them. For me, falling off the map is deadlier, because the enemies can throw you away, as well.

Unfortunately, one of the problems are bland and uninteresting boss fights. There are two, and both are quite easy as their attack pattern repeats itself without any twist. It just seems like a very low-effort Dark Souls fights without any thought given to them.

Audiovisuals

The game runs on the Unity engine, and it looks pretty good for most parts. You can dismember enemies’ bodies to pieces, and the roll physic adds an amusing element, where you throw off several enemies of ledges.

The soundtrack is satisfying and fits the game’s brutal nature. However, there are not very memorable compositions.

Performance

The game was tested with an i5 8300H, GTX 1060 6GB, and 16GB RAM, running at high settings with the resolution set at 1920x1080. The first chapter runs smoothly without any noticeable frame drops at 60 frames per second. However, during the second chapter, there are very noticeable frame drops that go as low as 30-40 frames. This chapter is poorly optimized, and it is annoying. On the other hand, the game never crashed for me, and I did not have any other problems.

Conclusion

ELDERBORN offers enjoyable gameplay and unique experience due to the first-person view. Although it has its problems, it is still an enjoyable game that should not be overlooked by hack & slash fans. It is also a good option for Souls-like fans.

Just played it a little bit and already had a lot of fun. It's very souls like but also reminds me of classic shooters with references to them.

Holy shit this game kicked ass.

It's DOOM meets Dark Messiah via Vermitide-esque melee combat (plus KICK).

Anyone who wants an intense and challenging melee combat experience, fans of sword and sorcery, or anyone curious about a first-person Soulish (kinda sorta not really) game should check this out ASAP.

The input queueing is ridiculous when animations last upwards of 3 to 4 seconds, and being mobbed by 7 dead guys 5 minutes into the game isn't really fun, it's just frustrating, especially when there's spear chuckers that you have to backtrack to kill from the checkpoint or else they toss spears into the ring and once you're in there there isn't squat you can do to them.

Thematic, atmospheric and boasting a kick-ass soundtrack, ELDERBORN is a treat for any fan of pulpy fantasy and first person slashing... or it would be for anybody if not for the difficulty level, which - even on the lowest setting - is still too steep for me to beat the boss fight at the end of the game's second chapter ;) Up to that point the game offered a mostly fair - if tough - challenge even for a less hardcore player like myself.

The enemy variety is there, as is an arsenal of interesting and somewhat varied weapons, so on that front the game delivers an experience that feels fresh even after a good few hours. There are challenges to earn additional experience from if you want to experiment with the weapons, and a level up system which, while I thought it could be better, gets the job done and offers some entertaining and useful additional skills that you can unlock.

So if you don't mind being challenged, and you dig the game's presentation, I'd say it should be an obvious purchase for you. If you expect the game to make you feel like a badass, cutting enemies left and right with reckless abandon though... it's going to be painful for a while, and then expect the minibosses and boss fights to kind of ruin your day.

Still, a very metal-feeling game, so props for that! m/
