Grand Ages: Rome

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1477427020

Pro:
- Gute Spielmechanik
- Große Variation an Truppen
- Anspruchsvoll
Contra:
- Anfängern wird im Tutorial nicht alles erklärt
- Multiplayer funzt nicht mehr richtig

Fazit:

Irgendwie alles was man an Geschäften braucht bekommt genau 1 passendes Haus.

Seems to work fine on modern systems (Windows 11) and even supports ultra-wide (3440x1440).
Multiplayer servers are down however, so you can't create an account to play even LAN or DirectIP.

Great game a decade ago, would love a sequel.

INTRODUCTION:

I'm sorry to say that i'm done with this game.

I've GAoR almost since release and I've been playing it almost since launch through the years for a couple of hundred hours since I had a pirate and an off steam version before until a friend of mine gift me this game.

But you can see by the amount of hours i have that this hasn't been a pleasent experience.

ABOUT THE GAME:

Grand Ages of Rome is the last entry on the Imperium Civitas saga and it promised to be the modern and graphically enhancement version of the saga while introducing new maps and campaings with a bigger focus on militar expansion while keeping the urban balance system of classes and needs.

It's graphically pleasent for a game of its age, the attention to detail in the models is reallly impressive for a game that doesn't relly on being historically accurate. The models of the bouildings are fine, maby a little lacking of variety since most of them are just reskins of Imperium Civitas II and the ones that have more than one model (i can only think of the Insulae right now) are pretty similar and doesn't stand out.

As for the maps even though its true there are more and different maps with different layout ideas as for past entries the reality is that they feel (like the building models) lacking of innovation and after a couple of missions not only they start to be reused but also the new or different ones just feel repetitive and similar.

And I can't talk of the maps without touching in the elefant in the room, the layout and building placement is horrible, even for the Kalypso standars this game makes you wanna commit suicide by drinking bleach every time you have (more like *want* because there's little to no reason to it) to palce roads, align buildings or place wonders or any big building, the relief and the general topocraphy of the maps is overly complicated for a city building and belongs more into a militar RTS type of game and it's another proof of the intentions of this game that end up not reaching and fely like they were trying to chew more than the developer or its resources ideas could. There are plenty of rocks and decorations that for some reason are preety much obstacles since there is no way of deleting them. Bizarree.

The combat system has received little to no improvement/changes other than some new animations and units, it's refreshing but not innovative and it really is one of the things that seems oddly and it gave me mix emotions since there are lots of thins that were clearly aimed to improve and give this entry a more rts and combat strategy focus like the map layout, the exclusive militar missions and objetives and the addition of more military units and buildings. I know they have only 1 year to make this game but it feels so underperformed in that regard since it's so CLEAR thath they intended to make a Roman Military Sim in so many aspects but they all came short.

As for the campaings I didn't want to talk much about it since I couldn't finish neither of them both for the problems detailed next. But I can say it is ambient in the late Roman republic an it follows the history of the climax of the Republic Era and the early Imerium (yeah kinda weird taking into account the game's names). The DLC campaing puts you into perspective of the Roman conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar while original one only focus in his return to rome, the Triunvirate and 86 b.C Roman Civil War. In summary i can say it has a good balance of historical fidelity and writers' freedom, if you're a Roman History crackhead as I am you will find some things that really triggers you and borders ridiculousness but it really is on the aceptable end.

PERFORMANCE:

And here we are, the real reason i can't recommend this game. It's because it's litterally unplayable.
As I've already said i played this game throughout many years , many systems and many hardwares. I have a I7 11th gen and a GTX3060 right now and this game literrally performs as bad as my first DualCore and GeForce 9. I really don't know what's the problem with the optimization of this game and how they broke the engine so bad in only one year, because Imperium Romanum (Civitas 2) worked and works perfectly.

I'm not getting into details of the many many bugs and graphical errors and incompatibilities this game has, but I'm detailing the ones that make it unplayable as for today.

First of all, as most of you may imagine this game has a lot of conflicts with 64bits systems, the difference it has with any other game before 2010, is that for some reason there is not any way to solve it as far as I'm aware, I tried limiting the graphical memory of my system both phisically and virtually (both things that have worked with other games with similar problems) and any compatibility and executable fix I can think of.

It really doesn't like to run over 60Hz and even at 60Hz it has already problems refreshing light water and loading graphics in general. Up from 120Hz (i tried playing at 300Hz) the game stops loading UI elements such as area of effect, building, men and even units sometimes.

The game is impossible to run over 1920x1080 and for some reason it doesn't recocgnize your windows and system native resolution, so it's preset in a very low resolution with makes it impossible to open and change it because if that resolution (i think its 1024x768) isn't compatible or multiple of yours you literally get black screened and or a direct launch crash. So for anyone who has 2k or higher resolution i advice you to set it from Windows to either 1920x1080 or 1260x720.

V-Sync doesn't work and it never did so it only lowers your real FPS count and produce stuttering, I'm convinced that posprocessing causes the same problem but i couldn't prove it.

Light reflexion, bloom, antialiasing, water (sometimes, i cannot figure what causes it either because it seems completely random) night and day cycle and shadows don't work properly eirther or doesn't work at all.

The game seems to stop working properly or at least loading stuff past 80 houses so in big maps or even campaing missions it's impossible to win because the game goes form 100+ FPS to 8 though time, it also seems to be increased by the saving and loading game so it's always better to play missions in one try without saving nor loading (yeah i know, preety shitty for a game that likes to randomly crash for no apparent reason).

And worst of all, there's and unispecified game crash that happens almost always along ~15 minutes into a save game.

CONCLUSION:

Surprisingly by now, I have to say... this is a good game, i don't find any other way to explain as how i played it so many times and spent so many hours into it since it's as self destructive as being addicted to coke.

It's fun, it has enough depth to it as to easily throw a couple of hours in one single mission/map, it has some replayability and it's difficult enough to be somewhat challenging to be catching.

But even though I have to say, it's not playable and it doesn't deserve to be purchased not even on sale, you'll have way more fun and a better time with Imperium Romanum. Most of the directive vagueness it really shows how they really didn't have a clear or common vision or end as most of it's problems aren't tolerable for today standars much much less to 2009 standars. Kalypso really missed and fucked it up in here, they literally killed the saga with the IP scandals and with this entry they put the last knife into the fans heart.

It's a pity to me that i write this review as i uninstall for the last time this game never to be played again, it only comes to wait the day they decide to revive the saga with a remaster (and even remastered the core problems of this game are so deep that i don't think even a remaster could make it playable) or a new entry. There's a current fan made revival for this game but I'm not sure how real it is and if it would ever see the light of day.

Thanks for reading me.

Awesome in 2021.

Running it on Windows 10 using Aorus RTX 3090 Xtreme had some random lag because fps drops. Issues with fps dropping can be resolved by finding Rome.exe and setting compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)

So, you are playing as one of the major families of Rome, vying for power, and hoping to become a high-ranking official. Perhaps even the next Emperor. But first you need to build the settlements you are assigned. And defend them from the barbarian. Perhaps even expand into weaker cultures territories and subjugate them for the Empire. Write your own epic tale. Recommend for those who are into such encompassing games.

You know, this is a pretty solid Rome-based city builder. Graphically decent for a game of its age, and with some solid city building elements. I would say this game is worth it in the under 20 dollar range, and for those who enjoyed the caesar line of games. I enjoyed this Caesar 3 type game for around 16 hours before finding the missions tedious.
Word of warning, the way commodities are measured is based on the balance of goods. I.e, goods do not accumulate based on time. This is somewhat odd for those used to real time strategy games.

MY CHILDHOOD GAME

This game is obviously old and even at its time it was not the best on the market, but I grew up playing this game and it was fantastic! I probably spent more than 500h or 1000h (to be honest I don't know the exact number) with its Italian physical release: Imperium Civitas III. So glad to know there is a Steam version!

Recommended at very low price.

I really wanted to like this game since I like Rome 2 but the building in the game was boring for me.The small radius of buildings was a big thumbs down.

I love the concept I just would remove the radius thing or make it way larger at least.

I would love to see a new upgraded version of this game though.

A fun and fairly simple city builder/RTS. It was the game that got me into city builders many years ago. It is not as expansive as City Skylines and its age is starting to show. But it does provide many hours of fun because its not just a city builder, but the RTS elements make the game engaging

How do you make a city builder 3 years after Caesar IV and NOT have the option to build while zoomed out? How do you make a city builder in general that doesn't have good camera options?
Not recommended for clunky controls, worse visuals than Caesar IV, and the inability to zoom out. Impossible to see city layout as I'm building. Not fun at all, and not worth $10.

Go play Caesar IV instead if you're looking for a relaxing city building experience.

the whole idea of game focuses on constructing a town with fairly enough contents and don't forget pass through tutorial first, it's quite easy to be learnt (takes just 30 minutes). by the way, military unites are deployed just for clearing trade routes from local residents ( mainly barbarians) therefore don't expect a large scale battle. the only glitch that evidently has been spotted by many players , the game crashes after a few minutes when your city gets too vast (at a point where a few small land left for building facilities) . you will find various solutions in the community hub ,however, none of them didn't work out for me. I hope you enjoy =)

This is a great city management/RTS game. Lots of stages, different ways to play it, and different achievements. Only downsides I have found is that the saved games are saved locally and not to Steam, and some of the multiplayer maps are bugged. Other than that this game is phenomenal. For a game from 2009 this is still worth playing.

If you like strategic city builders with some fighting based in the Roman times then this game is great for you. It is similar to the Caesar series in that regard. The resource management isn't about stocking things in a warehouse or granary but a free flow of what you have. Having the different skill trees is a very good idea and it allows to the player to receive bonus's for their play style. The last thing I like about the game is the graphics are nice without being over bearing on the computer. The only downside is I haven't quite figured out how to use some of the talents very well as some seem to have been rushed or poorly implemented but that is only a few and someone else might really like them.

This was originally going to be Imperium Romanum 2 but, it became this from what I have read. This is basically a simplified version of the original with much faster game play. I can't even say the graphics are better. Basically Imperium Romanum for people with short attention spans.

Some ok UI improvements but, that's about it. The graphics are pretty much the same too.

Buildings build and resources are gathered pretty much instantly. No resources are actually moved or carried. Stuff is just magically transferred between buildings no matter how far apart. Roads and city layout have no real meaning. You just spam a few buildings wherever and call it a day.

I recommend this game for the price, but it does have its drawbacks. Grand Ages Rome is a city building, resource management, and real-time strategy hybrid. It does the first two things very well and can provide hours of entertainment in building a city and managing an economy. The warfare in this game is subpar, however. The variety of units is nice, but the path finding, controls, and camera are all really bad, making warfare a frustrating experience that feels more like a chore than anything else.

The addictive mission-based campaigns and free build mode more than make up for the frustrating combat system. The missions are all based on real history and can be very fun to play. I also love the character progression system, which feels highly rewarding. Despite the drawbacks, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of historical strategy, resource management, and city builder games.

I bought this game because years ago I was a fan of the Impressions Games city-building series, particularly Caesar and Pharoah. This game builds on the same premise, with the building of cities in Rome while raising armies to attack and defend. Like Pharoah, it is a blend of city-building simulation and RTS except there is a stronger implementation of the RTS elements here.

Visually, the game looks pretty good. Not the best graphics by modern standards, but bounds above the old Impressions games.
