Über das Spiel

Become the ultimate Dungeon Master as you bribe, entice and coax your heroes through their adventures on a quest to restore your guild to its ultimate glory!
Guild of Dungeoneering is a turn-based dungeon crawler with a twist: instead of controlling the hero you build the dungeon around him. Using cards drawn from your Guild decks, you lay down rooms, monsters, traps and of course loot! Meanwhile your hero is making his own decisions on where to go and what to fight. But will he be strong enough to take on the dungeon's overlord? In between dungeon runs you manage your Guild, building new rooms to attract new classes of adventurer and to expand your decks of cards with more powerful items and events.

Features
  • Restore your guild to its former glory as Dungeon Master by taking control of your fledgling group of heroes and leading them to victory! (after admitting to a few defeats of course)
  • Entice, coax and bribe your heroes to clear the dungeons you build by strategically placing rooms, monsters and loot from the cards you are dealt
  • Get to know each of your hero’s personality and traits, upgrade your existing heroes, and add new heroes while you try out new strategies to keep from sending them to their doom!
  • Manage your guild well and spend your hard earned ‘glory’ wisely to level up and unlock more rooms and equipment. Improving your guild means you’ll have a better chance at beating the harder dungeons as you progress and take down the ultimate dungeon overlord.

The game is very charming, with a fun concept and excellent art style. However, all that polish rubs off after a few hours to reveal an endless, thankless grind with no reward. The fact that you are able to turn off the initially charming narrator due to his repetitive taunting is a good symbol of what makes this game awful. Its not just irritating, its a terrible troll designed to engage the player past the opportunity to request a refund, then abandon the player in the middle of an open field at the first available chance. Do not buy this if you place any value on your time. As one last example, a level two upgrade costs 750. A successful quest, which is three separate dungeons, earns you about 300. Each dungeon is very much rng, making a successful run take between 10 to 15 attempts. So, to progress to a tier two upgrade can take over 100 runs. Each run makes you click through a number of screens to waste your time, one laughably giving you the chance to customize the next adventurer for the meat grinder. I know thats the joke, but after 11 hours and 2 tier two upgrades, its starts to feel like the joke is on the player. A failed run earns between 2 and 15, btw. Only worth mentioning as a footnote.

Fun game, nice vibe and mechanics seems fair and decently balanced. My only real critique would be pacing issues related to how long it takes to unlocking new content. The devs have responded letting me know there are options to increase that in the settings. I will give this some more playtime.

The concept of the game is great and i like it a lot, however it is a grind now. You need 750 gold to progress to level two items, however you can only earn 15 gold max per dungeon run , not counting quests bonus.

I expected to dislike the visual style, but it's well done and I enjoyed it. Kudos to the designers there.

There are a lot of classes and they all play differently, so that's good.

I think I didn't like this game because RNG had too much influence on the outcomes of battles, and there was simply too few ways to mitigate bad luck. Way too many battles consisted of the enemy and me taking turns hitting each other for 1 hp, back and forth. When the enemy goes first and often starts with more hp, that turns into a really boring race. I lost way too many battles because I simply never drew a 2 damage card or 2 block card to change the tempo.

Which leads me to my second big dislike of the game: unlocking more equipment puts them into the reward pool for _every class_, even those that don't want that type of equipment. So you're getting Slice weapons when you play a magic class, Fire spells when you're playing a Bruiser, etc. Now, I'm no opposed to that in principle, but in this specific game you really want to stack equipment of the same type because that gives you stronger cards. I'm of the opinion that unlocking something should never be a negative (or if it is, that there should be a way to disable the unlock like Roguebook does!). This disincentivization to unlock things is an anti-pattern.

The tile placement mechanic to build the dungeon is a great idea, but again dominated by RNG. You simply don't see enough options for tiles to place on each turn to mitigate bad draws. There's no way to redraw or refresh the tiles you have available or influence the tile deck you're drawing from.

I spent way too long on this one.

The tile placing mechanic looked appealing, in practice it makes almost no difference.

You only play one character at a time, so there's no synergy or interaction to be had there. Furthermore, none of the cards seemed to affect one another.

While some new mechanics were added as I played, they were few and far between. Each level felt like the kind of incremental variation you'd see in a Candy Crush or other mindless mobile game where level 3000 looks barely different than level 3999.

Even turning on some of the options included with the 'Ultimate Edition' meant that it took painfully long to collect enough gold to unlock something new for my guild. Don't get too excited about placing your new unlock, though, because where it goes matters even less than the tiles you use to build dungeons (i.e. it doesn't matter at all).

Combat is very much subject to RNG. There were several early battles in which I kept track of the cards dealt to myself and to my enemy, and I could come up with no winning combination. Battles are simple card plays with damage (and blocking) split between broad magical and physical damage, with the only modifiers being speed of attack and whether said attack was blockable.

This felt very much like a severely dumbed-down single character Darkest Dungeon, with a similarly long grind attached to it. Playing on the default setting, where you're limited to 15 gold a run, makes getting to the 750 gold required to buy even a tier 2 upgrade excruciating. Even turning on the x5 multiplier option in the menu meant numerous runs to buy anything past the first tier.

To put things into perspective as to the longevity of this game, only 3.8% of players made it to the 3rd round of dungeons, with the first dungeon being merely the tutorial! I'm obviously not alone in finding the game dull and repetitive.

Though the art style is pencil sketchy and not to my taste, I understand the aesthetic choice. The whole thing is meant to play out like pen and paper D&D on graph paper. However, I cannot recall such a soulless dungeon in any D&D I played past the age of twelve. You place monsters and treasure and there are fountains that might curse or bless you: that's it.

To make matters worse, this game embraces the anti-roguelite mechanic of making character loss crippling to advancement. I wound up restarting the whole thing (the only way I got past 3 hours of this grind of a game) because all of my replacement characters couldn't stand up to the heavy does of RNG the developers elected to include instead of meaningful player choice.

At least in an X-Com or a Darkest Dungeon or a Wildermyth, other members of your team might be able to close gaps left by the death of a crucial character, but Guild of Dungeoneering is entirely a solo character experience, despite all the classes available for unlock.

There are attempts at humor, all of it meant as parody or silliness. None of it goes far enough into absurdity to make it particularly funny to me. Instead, the paper-thin sketches of jokes feels like an attempt at an homage that, like most parody, is presented in place of any invention, imagination, or real story.

In summary, this feels like a grindy, mobile game beset by RNG that I wish I'd spent less time playing. Hopefully, you can do better at that last bit than I did by looking elsewhere for entertainment

I've played quite a bit of this game since it first came out. It's a constant revisit for me because it's just so much fun! Strategy plays a part, along with a little luck! It's a rogue-like, and you'll lose Dungeoneers you rather fancy, but it doesn't matter because the journey is so enjoyable.

For the new players, you'll have a character you select for each run and that character has a starting deck of attacks and blocks. As you adventure you'll earn equipment that will add cards to the deck. You'll keep going until you finish that objective, then it starts all over and you'll start a new level at 1 and build a new deck. LOTS of replayability and combinations are possible.

Great music and humor. Quirky and fun. HIGHLY recommend for card builder fans, strategy fans, D&D players (the fantasy nods are fun), and even those Munchkin players who are looking for a little something single player and similar.

Even with the ultimate edition upgrade, the game still has issues with its progression system. Mainly that it punishes the player for unlocking things, and if you're not ruthlessly min-maxing, you're going to have a bad time. If you fill your item pool with items you don't need, you'll have to routinely click through loot screens that give you stuff that is not optimal and therefore worthless. The pinnacle of this problem is that the objectively best tier 1 character's special ability is that he gains a bonus if he doesn't equip weapons. Best character - because she forgoes the itemization aspect of the game.

In the end, the game is lovingly crafted (though you'll quickly loathe those parts and put the animation speed to x5 to reduce the game time wasted by animations) and fun for a few games until you realize that you'll have to memorize every aspect of the game to progress beyond tier 1 (and the game mechanics are not interesting enough to be worth memorizing in this detail to me) or just pray to RNGsus - all the while being mocked by the game's bard about how much you suck.

I think it speaks volumes about the game's progression system that the simplest achievements are only held by less than 5% of the player base.

Check my stats. I LOVE this game. It is quirky and entertaining. It can be easy one turn and very challenging the next. The replayability is endless.

The only con is that sometimes you can get really unlucky with the draws from the tiles and die because there's a turn limit on some Dungeons. But this happens very rarely. You can also get unlucky with a draw from your deck and lose even though you were fighting a weaker monster, again, this happens rarely.

I've played for hundreds of hours and with the new update, I'm sure I'll be close to 500 before I'm done. And The devs are super cool and very receptive to feedback and suggestions. Their other games are just as creative and unique while still being familiar and fun to play.

Super classy move to offer the update for free to those who already owned the game. I would have happily paid for the improvements/complete overhaul of the game.

I don't know exactly what it is I like so much about Guild of Dungeoneering. It's easy to play, sure. It's got a charming visual design, sure. It's got good music and kinda funny poetry, sure. There's an almost constant sense of progress even in an unsuccessful run, sure. But no one of those things is good enough for a positive review.

All of them together, though? Sure.

It's not expensive, it looks good, and it plays well. What else could you ask for? Well, it's charming, too boot, so I guess that's one thing.

After the Ultimate Edition update, I can finally say with confidence that this game is a relatively well-balanced, well-thought out distilled experience for card game lovers. The rock-paper-scissor gameplay is enjoyable enough, and different classes play very differently. Monsters are not extremely numerous (given the simplicity of the mechanics), but they are well-designed and distinct. Random loots (& card choices) are relatively okay, although I sometimes wish for slightly more agency on the player's part. Graphics is charming, and the narrative (the Bard) is very catchy & appealing.

The only underdeveloped aspects of the game include:
- The dungeon tile-placement - although there are monsters that react to the dungeon's pattern (Nightowl, Loner?), they are few and far in between. Often how you place dungeon tiles has little impact.
- Synergy between cards. Right now there are only synergies between traits and cards. For a card game, some synergies between cards are very welcomed.

This is a wonderful casual game. Like most things involving cards, sometimes you get what you need, and other times you fight for it, but a blend of different characters and tactics keeps the game fun. Also, it comes with its own bard to sing of your success and failure.

I've played 37 hours of this game. I thought maybe the upcoming Ultimate Edition would fix the fundamental problem, but I don't see that happening after playing the free trial. The problem is that you spend time leveling up a dungeoneer so they have better starting stats and can solve harder dungeons. Then that dungeoneer dies, and you start with a new level 1 character. The problem is that all the dungeons solved by that first character are still solved, so you reach a point where your new characters cannot ever level up because all the available dungeons are too intense for a new character. There are ways of triaging this by building up the guild house, but it really isn't the same. Death is meant to be commonplace among dungeoneers with the *guild* continuously leveling up, but the guild level isn't really sufficient to keep up with the dungeon difficulty.

It looks cool and the sound track is all kinds of chill, but it's darkest dungeons with a cutesy art style.
With the no win situations and rng heavy reliance (on item drops and card draw) in order to get anywhere that the comparison would involve.
It's super grindy.
--
I don't like it, it's not for me, but the skinner box mechanics have kept me playing past the refund period so i'll probably pile another couple of dozen hours into it in order to feel like i've at least got my money's worth.
--
Played another hour, and quite frankly, it can get fucked.
--
Response to Dev:
I know the ultimate edition was pushed out to everyone who had bought the game.
I played it and the coin cap makes the grind /significantly/ greater, with no real change to the base rng heavy gameplay.
I can understand why the change was made, to ensure that progression was as you had intended, but it removes agency and just pads out the game rather than make it more enjoyable.

Guild of Dungeoneering (2015)

Guild of Dungeoneering is a dungeon crawl game with card elements. You place the dungeon rooms yourself and you can place loot or gear in rooms to lure your adventurers to those rooms. Fighting is pretty cool, physical and magical attacks with some mechanics like fast hitting attacks or attacks that does damage and block damage at the same time. If your character dies its off to the graveyard with them, but a few matches later a new recruit of that class will wait at the guild, ready to die- err I mean crawl some dungeons for loot. Each class has a different playstyle, try them all and find the one you like best. Fight bosses and complete quests. Great dungeon crawler game, probably my favourite in the genre.

Not really a roguelike. You don't gain any power between runs. It's more horizontal progression. You unlock characters that have different starting decks. The closest to increased power, is unlocking new sets of items that give you the potential to become more powerful. A lot of the items come with negative effects that just make you weaker as well though.

You go into a dungeon and you always start out with the character's starting cards. You get gear after winning a fight. Head, Armor, Weapon, and Off-Hand are the gear slots. The gear gives health and/or cards. There's no way to remove the starting cards and you don't keep any of the gear between dungeons.

There's not much else to the game.

SUCKS
Enemies are manifesting the exact card they need at the 'magically' perfect time instead of working with a randomly assigned hand like the player, this cheating takes place 90% of the time so you're forced to grind for better features

Good luck playing your 100 + games to grind up coins for second tier loot
The first tier loot and characters are useless after you clear the first dungeon.
If your tier one cat burglar maxes at five hitpoints and the end enemy in the dungeon level always pulls out a
six-hit card, that can't be blocked, then you're only playing the dungeons for marginal gold acquisition knowing the end enemy will always have the perfect unstoppable card that the A.I. will manifest at that time to counter your situation.

It's like those RTS games where the A.I. will cheat and bi-pass production to dump in tons of insta-tanks and insta-troopers.

I like the music and overall style of the game, but the RNG is just killing it for me. Sending your guys in to die for 1g so you can slowly grind up and hope to afford some upgrades... ugh.

Unless you know what type of enemies are on a certain quest, and you have actually managed to buy the upgrade to have a class that might (RNG) get cards that are suitable for that particular quest.... you die. Over and over again.

There's no way to make your deck in advance of a quest, and I don't know what else I can possibly do to get a feeling that I am in control rather than the entire thing coming down to RNG.

GoD is a strategical card game, about build a guild house, send adventurers to crawl dungeons, with rogueLITE elements and point'n'click interface. I'm finding so much fun playing it and it's helping me to beat my ADD and apathy...

Game has some nice ideas, but fails to provide meaningful sense of progress. Your characters die a lot, but that is ok because there is no cost (except wasting your time) for failures.

Guild of Dungeoneering is a game that should be good but isn't. It has a great visual style, interesting turn based combat and some complexity and depth to the game. But ultimately any fun that could be had in the game is utterly ruined by the unforgiving and more importantly uninteresting difficulty. You build a couple of upgrades, send a person into a dungeon, get an unlucky hand draw (or the enemy gets a great hand draw) two or three monsters in, die, repeat ad infinitum.

Essentially you end up endlessly sending people to their deaths for 10-20 gold in the hopes of buying a better hero for a 10% increased chance not to get ruined by random card draws in the same dungeon. I haven't seen any real way to work around this system. Card Draw? Doesn't matter every deck starts with 5-10 unremovable terrible cards that you can get in a row and lose the dungeon. Damage? Eventually a monster will get 5 or so 2+ damage turns and kill you, Specialisation? Can't do, physical block works on only physical enemies, magical likewise. Get used to your warriors wielding spell books and your mages wielding shields and armour to make up for the glaring flaws in their base decks.

You'll enter the same dungeon many times waiting for a good set of gear to randomnly drop, a series of unlucky enemy card draws from every monster you fight and enough gold from the corpses of previous heroes to have appropriate upgrades in town to win. It ends up being insanely tedious. I swear I've played this game far longer than two hours, it felt endless monotony each time I played.

I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone, the balance and feel of the game is utterly ruined to the spammy, meaningless manner in which you throw away lives into dungeons and how overtuned the game feels to play. This fact is worsened by the meaningless, replaceable feeling of heroes, as you get a new one as soon as one dies and the complete lack of distinguishing features for a hero. They lack customised looks, RPG mechanics such as levels or talents, experience or power gain from surviving the horribly overtuned dungeons.

In the end because everyone and everything was so meaningless and replaceable in the game, the game itself became replaceable. Essentially, whilst it has all the style and aesthetics of a cool, fun game it ultimately lacks a soul or any reason to keep playing it.

Fairly simple, very enjoyable game. Like a sillier, easier Slay the Spire, where you only invest 10 minutes into a run and the consequences aren't that bad. You get complete information during fights, a deck to play from, and some upgrade choices every time you win a battle. Also more consequential upgrades to make to your guild. Though not all that hard, I died quite a bit until I got the hang of it, and not just from RNG. :)

The Guild of Dungeoneering was a game I bought on sale but after playing it.. It's worth the full price and more. The graphics will put some people off but for me it's part of what makes the game. The entire game feels like a DnD game. Like you're DMing a DnD game as the game is happening.

The gameplay is all about building your guild of dungeoneering with upgrades, and readying your chosen adventurer for dungeons. Once inside you explore the dungeon in two parts. Part one you pick a piece to add to the dungeon, and part two sees your little guy moving around and getting into fights. Your goal is to build the dungeon in such a way as to have your little adventurer prepare themselves for the final battle of the dungeon, and loot enough gold to make the journey worth it.

It's easy to grind in the background while watching videos, since that's the only way I could bother myself to complete it. The humor runs out quickly, while the RNG keeps up the issues. It's not terrible, just not remarkable enough to recommend.

It's way more like video poker than an RPG. There is really no tactics or skill to anything. You might as well flip a coin before you launch the game to decide if you should play or not. You really aren't given any meaningful decisions to make. You just wait to see how the dice roll and then go oh well.

I really wanted to like this, but the game stays unsatisfying. The dungeon building is a gimmick with little depth, it is all about the card fights. If you want a similar game which is more fun with more variety, look into Slay the Spire or Dicey Dungeons.

Extremely simple rogue-like that's extremely luck based. Its quirkiness wears out quick.
