Über das Spiel

"Hand of Fate" erweckt Kartendecks zum Leben!

Not my game :D

Excellent game! Very original... yet very simple and basic at the same time. I was not a big fan at first, but then I actually enjoyed the flow of it, if you accept the concept and its simplicity. A rogue like, with a puzzle adventure story!
Basically a Choose your own adventure type of game, like an old school gamebook, in 2 separate modes: the adventure/story mode is made with cards (tarot like) placed on the table, and you move your figurine on them to reveal each scene, like an old fashioned board game! very pleasant, and very rich. The second mode is the combat/action mode, in third person view, where you control your character in real time in Batman Arkham styled combats (the very basic side of it) or through mazes of traps. If the combats are simple but pleasant, yet very repetitive and basic, the adventures through cards get actually quite complex and enthralling because of their writing in sub structures: if you succeed in the adventure of card X, that gives you card X2 for the next try, which is the continuation of that little scene. If you succeed again in X2, you access X3 and so on, and the pleasure is to discover each little story this way. Also, most stories have luck tests / skill checks which are simple 3 Cards Tricks / Shell Games / whatever you call this old street game of gambling, but with 4 cards. Some will hate, some will love, I was in between (sometimes it can be unfair and stressful, sometimes pleasant).
The feeling of progression comes with beating each level and bosses, and also carefully crafting your deck (deck building feature like in living card games!).
All in all, a very simple yet neat, not pretentious game, and I am glad I did not give up trying it! I look forward to playing the sequel, although I am sad to learn the devs stopped their activity :( And it was an Australian studio, a rare thing! good little game anyway.

I played Hand of fate 2 before and decided to play its predecessor.
The story as well as the interaction with the dealer is still onpoint.
there is an array of unlockables and each items have it's use.
With the free DLC, you unlock new encounters and items to add to your set.
As a player of both, I really appreciate the dev listening to its player base and for its 2nd game and addressed most remarques concerning encounters, introducing new gambling like the pendulum and dice as well as much more.
in my opinion there are 2 things (fixed in 2) aspects that I didnt really like:
- THe combats feels cluncky, you dont know wether a ennemy is attacking or not and some maps are so tight it doesnt feel fair.
-The DLC while midly interresting feels like a chore to grind each fate to unlock all cards. by the Time your finished with 1 or 2 you probably finished the game.
If you loved this game, I highly encourage you to play the 2nd!

Entertaining mix between dungeons and dragons, rouge card game and some hack and slash. The narration is beautifully on point allowing great immersive experience. As you progress in the game you get more and more side stories to play though and it is very world building.

On the side note its battles are a bit more basic. There is some detail to items you get in the game and some terrain changes you watch for like traps or fire but the combat is swing and dodge with the indicators shown.

Overall the game is very good at keeping it all immersive. I think the combat may be simple but it allows you to keep the game entertaining without being overly difficult at times.

A rare example of style winning over substance. Hand of Fate is very flashy and pleasant to look at. The mysterious dealer provides excellent narration and his flying cards are a great opening to the game backed by an excellent opening track. HoF makes good use of sound effects as well, especially when drawing cards or failing events. Gameplay itself is very simple. You explore a dungeon crafted by cards, each card brings something new, earn new cards by defeating bosses and completing challenges.

Combat is even simpler than that, just spamming attack near an enemy will guide you right into their path so you can beat them up. Hit your counter button when the green symbol shows up and roll out of the way when the red one does. The only real movement you'll be doing is rolling all over the place like it were a Dark Souls game. Because combat is easy to master the game itself tends to be quite easy as well save for some of the boss fights. Wildcards and difficulty modes help add to the challenge though and include additional unlockables to help you on your way.

Aside from easy and overly simplistic combat the only real issue with HoF is the floaty controls which can be unresponsive on a keyboard and mouse set up.

The game itself is great. However the end game boss design is abysmal, the RNG odds are so extremely stacked against you that even after 20 tries you may still lose, it doesn't help either that the combat design is clunky and its difficult to avoid getting hit by waves of ranged or melee spam attacks that aim lock onto you.

Well, I suppose this game could be fun for a few hours, but the bland nature of the combat takes away from the other elements. It is essentially a rinse and repeat, but one that does have an excellent narrator, the dealer. Very impressive voice work!

Bad game. Mechanics are horrible. Card draws are rigged and not even accurate, says it draws two but ends up three. Lazy design...instead of making things harder it just gimps you...I've had floors where every encounter was that same card. Mindlessly repetitive and boring. Takes five minutes to get the gist then you just end up clicking through all of the dialogue...10 minutes in you're already frustrated by the sluggish pace.

Very original and interesting game.

Hand of Fate is a board game for the most part, featuring deckbuilding and aventure game elements. However, when it comes to combat, it functions on the same mechanics than the Batman Arkham series. It also has some RPG elements to it, with a small ammount of character imrovement and equipment gathering.

Overal is a very good and unique game that will keep you playing for hours and hours.

Quite an adventure actually. At first you think the game is easy and you can beat it in an hour. But after you pass like 8 9 stages it becomes d&d and hard af. It is really fun and easy to understand 9/10 because of the weirdness of the combat system.

Even though this game is from 2015, it brings a refreshing take on the roguelike genre. It uses clever deckbuilding tricks and a good amount of RNG to put you in D&D-like dungeons where you have to fight the enemies the dealers summons for you. Controls are somewhat cluncky with keyboard and mouse, I'd recommend using a controller. Atmosphere is awesome and replayability is huge as we expect with any good roguelike game. If you like cardgames, a fantasy setting and some minor hack and slash work, this game is for you. Recommended!

It tries to be an adventure game with some action but it turns out to be mediocre on both aspects.. Fighting with monsters is very frustrating because the fixed camera view and the limited movement of the hero (late-game enemies have fast attack that barely gives little area for attack..). The encounter cards are repetitive.. I hope V2 is better.

This might be one of the worse rougelikes that i've ever played. The concept of the game is incredibly fun...and you can have a lot of fun playing this game. However, once you begin to get to the proper game you start to notice issues. Combat becomes slow and clunky as enemies become stronger and faster and they spawn more groups of them without giving you meaningful progression in power. The more cards you unlock in the game, the harder the game actually becomes. You make it harder to get reliably good cards such as the maiden or twisted canyon which makes it harder to get gear that allows you to feel as though you can make progress.

The main issue with this game is the combat mechanics. You're constantly being locked into animations that prevent you from dodging attacks of other enemies, therefore forcing you to take damage. Boss fights essentially boil down to attacking them two to three times, running away and repeating. However, with other enemies thrown into that loop you often find yourself being hit by the boss or an enemy and that often times puts you into a stunlock.

Clunky, but Fun

What I Liked

Really unusual way to do a game like this. Build your own deck, which in turns builds out the game for you. The combat, while clunky, was fun. I liked how the cards drawn affected the combat directly.

What I Did Not Like

Not much, except that the combat was clunky.

Why I Stopped Playing

I got bored after awhile, mostly because it was the same thing over and over, just with new cards being added during each level.

Disclaimer

I have been a gamer for over 30 years. I tend to play mostly PC games. I also bounce around between games A LOT. I may purchase a $60 game and play it for 2 hours or spend $10 on a game and spend 50 hours on it. Even if I played a game a short time, it does not mean it is bad. It just means another game caught my attention. I also complain about flaws in games a lot, even about the littlest of things. Keep that in mind when reading my reviews. If I do not have a complaint, then the game must be special!

The main thing that got me to stop playing was the game is so easy and I was first trying everything until the final boss. He spawns with 4 enemies and I can't even kill one of them. I have restarted and tried many times but it is just too broken. If it wasn't for this boss fight I would have recommended the game. It was so unsatisfying rage quitting the game and not finishing it. I found out it's not the final boss.

The animations are too slow. I ended up clicking furiously trying to skip boring animations that show up too often.

Dance with RNGesus in this card-based adventure!

+The narrator is amazing and is very reactive to your choices, deckbuilding and combat prowess
+Most cards are evocative and charming
+Presentation is amazing
+Lots of content to spice up the dungeons

-Combat is basically lackluster arkham
-Hard mode (warlord fate) has weird difficulty spikes

Hand of Fate is beloved by the community, but I couldn't get into it.

This is basically a procedural game, the procedural part being mainly what cards you get. Sounds fun, but it's boring. Especially the combat part; it's like playing a game from 15-20 years ago. Awful, blunt controls, with literally no depth. Attack button, move button. Parry button. And roll button. Simplistic beyond belief once you see a gameplay or play it.

The game revolves around luck more than anything. There are impossible games, and not so impossible games, depending on if you're favored or not by the god of luck. Your gear, food, gold, etc, is reset at the start of each run, but the enemies get stronger and harder. The graphics are really bad, and the story / lore tries to be deep and act like you're in kind of an afterlife, where winning makes you keep living, but it's not deep, there's no story hidden in this game. It's just random words.

Total meh.

It has deck building elements and plays like DnD in a way as there's the Dealer laying out scenarios for you. But I felt difficult to continue beyond a certain point of time because it started feeling stale, especially the combat.

All in all, would not recommend although I don't think it's bad either. This is one of those games that make me wish there was an option for a neutral review on Steam.

'Hand of Fate' offers one of the most original gameplay I've seen in a while. The story is attractive, the bestiary is varied, so are the equipments. There are some interesting mechanics like benedictions, curses and artifacts. I wouldn't call this game beautiful but it certainly has something attractive and pleasant to watch and play. The idea to constantly switch between a card game and a RPG-style is brilliant and there are only few things to reproach it for.
Firstly, I would say its repetitiveness: once you discovered the main cards, you will find it in every new game. This breaks the immersion because you eventually manage to learn how to avoid bad events and how to 'create' beneficial ones. You no longer bother to read the description of the cards or their staging. Extension and some special events do bring some novelty but still requiers a lot of resources and/or chance.
I saw they put some effort in translation beacause now it's more decent than before (I used to play it in french). But only the text is translated, not the Dealer's voice. Well, I guess it is good enough.
The fight gameplay quickly becomes boring when you realize it's all about left-clicking again and again. Plus the camera angles are awful: when you have no shield, you can't counter distant attacks and when you don't see the enemy you just don't know when he attacks. So you lose a lot of health for game design...
I have nothing against high difficulty in video games but this one has pissed me off several times for its cruelty. A few random cards can simply ruin your play by deleting all of your stamina, gold or health! This game feels so unbalanced. In the fight parts, you can be alone versus eight of nine enemies and still the game will put traps on the map, like it wasn't enough. In this game, you can die while dodging an opponent's stroke... This level of RNG is crazy and useless.
The game pace is a mess: there are facts and card-drawing moments you just can't pass. And it's really boring to see the Dealer take all his time while you are starving. Plus going from reading to fighting on and on also breaks the pace in most awful way.
Anyway, be prepared to die a lot and so to hear a lot of the Dealers' mocking ('Again, death is on your way', 'Have you learned ? Nothing'). Please, let me retry quickly rather than taunt me over and over again, jeez!
Yeah, I really don't know why I do recommend this game ^^'

A roguelike deckbuilding dungeon crawl with a (less refined) Batmanesque combat system. Too easy on normal difficulty and pretty grindy on hard as you will run out of food and die often or run into enemies early game with the starter weapon and certain enemies take a while to kill with that weapon. But you'll generally advance some of the cards you've put in the deck or at least had a shot to. Enjoyable even with its issues.

Hand of Fate feels like a pick your adventure book in card form. the game has a murder hobo jumping from card to card and each will have a text story part that can lead into a choice, card pick game, or a fight. there are a few game boards to pick from and each has a different way of setting up the cards also each has pre-set card set up with a few empty spaces that you can add card you have unlocked. what you add can make it easier or harder as you go through the levels. some cards have a medal attacked to them that give other cards after completing some conditions. combat is something like the batman games with the enemies telegraphing attack fairly well. one downside is as you clear levels things are placed in every deck after said unlock to make it harder and you can not remove these so waiting on getting some metals can come back on you.

though some cards can get repetitive if they come up a lot i still really enjoyed this game.

Amazing concept and presentation.

but super dull gameplay. The combat is literally just spamming the X button and pressing the parry button when it tells you too. And everything outside of the combat is just RNG events that give you equipment or affect your health for future dull combat. I didn't play for too long but within the 1 hour I played there was zero challenge whatsoever and the 1 time I died at the end before I decided to quit was because due to complete RNG I just ran out of food and died, there was literally nothing I could have done to avoid it.

The combat is so easy that not only did I never die in combat, I only got hit during combat like 2-3 times TOTAL in the entire hour I played and Im not joking. Maybe for a completely casual player this might be interesting combat, but if you are at all experienced with anything close to this you will find it insanely trivial.

This game makes me kinda sad.
Such an incredibly cool and stunningly presented premise bogged down by horrible combat. I still recommend this game for the novelty of experiencing this fantastical card game with a mysterious dealer narrating your tabletop adventure, but be wary of the sluggish and dreadfully bland segments where you actually have to play out the combat encounters.

It's just so slow. Glacial, drawn-out interactions plus extra UI steps to pretty much anything you try to do. It drags as much as it possibly can, which does nothing to help tolerate the poor action phases that try to pass as game play nor the tediously basic and flat card pretense in what passes for the management side.

There's no area that doesn't need serious refinement.

While the random roguelike element makes it fun. Aspects such as bad camera view + badly designed map layout, clunky combat(arkham combat game style strike/block) makes this game more frustrating than fun.

Fun game its kinda like a dungeon and dragons with some Dark souls like aspects. The combat isn't the best do it feels a bit wonky sometimes. But it's definitely fun to play. If you like lore and reading while also having a bit of gameplay and decision making to balance out the reading and lore I would definitely recommend it. Also, I don't think it's that much of a deck builder game cause its not the biggest part of what the game is about. It's more about taking chances to better your gear ect.

Ugh, this is hard to say because I love a lot of things about this game. I love the way your adventure is created out of cards you unlock, as well as your gear set. I love the way the event outcomes are actually skill based, giving you the player some agency because if you can track the shuffling of the cards you can pick the successful outcomes. I love the way the story reveals itself in layers, as each card you unlock tells you more about the protagonist's past and deeds. I also love the Arkham-style combat, and the fact that it's not as smooth as Arkham's is forgivable given in the difference in the size of the developer. My biggest complaint, though, is the massive difficulty spike that happens at the end of the game. Without getting too spoilery, let me just say it's the most absurd difficulty increase that I have ever seen in a game in terms of the difficulty and quantity of enemies, and the difficulty of the card game/adventure layer on top of it. You're also introduced to some challenges where the greatest antagonist is the camera perspective forcing you to run blind through damaging traps because the camera does not show you what you're stepping into. Overcoming the game's final challenge was when I really felt like I was at the mercy of RNG, where previously the item drops could ease the difficulty of a hard but doable fight, in the final boss battle it felt like you needed to find specific items to even stand a chance. It felt too punishing to the point of being unfair, and while I know there are people out there who have done it, for me my interest in playing the game any further just evaporated after multiple runs failed to the point where I felt like further attempts were futile.

Charming rogue-like/ choose-your-own-adventure/ card-game / board-game hybrid with some flaws.

Pros:
-Interesting transition between card-based rogue-lite board game and brawler
-Adjustable difficulty by choosing certain modifiers for your playthrough
-Awesome evil/charming card dealer that narrates all your steps
-Large amount of encounters, items, curses, blessings and equipment to unlock and choose for your next game
-Story mode where you progress through more and more difficult bosses and encounters while also unlocking buffs and stronger items for yourself.
-Tight controls in combat

Neutral:
-Expect to die just because of bad luck (mainly running out of food). This can be frustrating and I understand if people do not like this game because of that.

Cons:
-Very simple combat-mechanics (attack, counter, dodge, item)
-Very random difficulty spikes at the beginning before you unlock the shield as a start item (to block and counter)
-Enemies do not defeat you using interesting attack or mechanics but usually just by their large number and random traps on the map. One can dodge/counter basically all attacks with good timing though.
-Takes almost a minute to restart a run (end of run screen + menu + start of run animations). Some runs are just doomed from the very beginning. This is fine for a rogue-like but the time required to restart is just annoying.
-Controls during the card/board-game phase are a bit unprecise.

Interesting setting, but RNG gets in the way too much in later challenges. By too much I mean possibly enough to make you stop playing for a while.

Worth on sale.

Its a good game if you are interested in card games and choice. The story can be completed in 10 hours. Getting all the card unlocks and events maybe another additional 10 hours. With endless mode, it can be a fun super stacked run, but of course once you have all the events the game drops off. Luckyily for use the made a sequel. So if you enjoy this one, you should pick up the second (here or on the switch).

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#111 out of 555)... it's time for Hand of Fate.

Hand of Fate is a really interesting synthesis of the ARPG, CCG and roguelike genres. Unfortunately it's also very unpolished (combat in particular feels clumsy) and is the lesser game in every sense of the term compared to Hand of Fate 2. Still, if you're interested in Hand of Fate 2 and for whatever reason want to try out the first game, erm, first, it'll give you a good idea of what to expect. Otherwise there's no reason to play Hand of Fate, as there really isn't any kind of over-arcing story between games that you need to worry about.

Huge recommend to fans of a good adventure, card games, RPGs, and action. A good deal at full price, a steal at less.

+Great visuals
+Excellent variety of cards, monsters/bosses, equipment
+Amazing voice acting by The Dealer
+Story is well done
+Good replayability
+Tons of cards with different effects and choices

-Combat can be a bit awkward at times
-Lacking hero customization
-Can get repetitive if you get stuck at a level

A game that we may never see the likes of again. With a story that is enriching, an Atmosphere that is downright untouchable, and great voice work by The Dealer, it is a legendary game.

Sadly, the main issue with Hand of Fate, is that its combat can be a little bit mediocre.
