I recently discovered this game, Mars: War Logs, and the developer, Spiders, after playing (and being blown away by) Greedfall.

Greedfall was such an amazing game that I was suddenly interested in playing all RPGs developed by Spiders. I found 3 additional RPGs made by Spiders (Bound By Flame, Mars: War Logs, and The Technomancer) and I sat down and played all of them.

I played on the hardest difficulty (Extreme) and the combat is PUNISHING on that difficulty.

The voice acting for this game was so atrocious when it first came out that they released a free patch which re-did all the voice acting. I played the game with the free patch installed and did not find the voice acting to be bad at all.

I enjoyed the combat system and story. The combat is basically hack and slash, but there is an interesting crafting system, you can set traps and throw bombs, and you also have a nailgun.

Overall, I enjoyed this game, but it is the later Spiders RPGs (The Technomancer and Greedfall) where Spiders really hit their stride and managed to create true masterpieces.

Mars: War Logs is a completely okay game. Sometimes is fine to have something that's just fine. If you can put expectations aside and approach this game as a type of B grade cult style game. You may be able to enjoy it. The combat is a slow blend of melee, a nail gun, and some techno.. tecro..? some kind of mancy. The quests are pretty repetitive but offered me enough of a story to press through the few hours it takes to finish the game. There was nothing particularly awful about the game to me. Nothing stood too much either. I mean shit it's 5 bucks now so if it goes on sale it'll be like 2 or something. Like I said, we all have our different tolerances. I could see why some people wouldn't like this game. I've just always had a way of finding what little good things have in them. I played it once and that was plenty for me. I'd say it's worth a go.

Truly a game that boggles the mind the more you try to understand how it was made, why it was made, and the decisions made with the scale and budget it has. I paid less than a dollar for this and I still think I made a bad choice. One can do better with their choice of questionable EuroJank RPGs.

If you've never played a Spiders game, you have to go in knowing that they're not a AAA developer with a huge budget. I personally love them and find their games have a kind of charm. They're pretty low budget, but I think they do a pretty good job with coming up with fun gameplay, having choices that change things, and a decent original story.

Mars: War Logs is just that. Gameplay that I find fun, simple inventory and crafting systems, original story that gets the job done, and makes you make choices that take you down different paths and do change the ultimate ending. I really enjoy what they're able to do with what I imagine is a pretty limited budget.

Ok, i got both Mars War logs and Technomancer in sale. I played Tehcnomancer first and all QoL stuff is better there (except for backtracking, that is way worse in Technomancer).

When i continued with Mars, i first felt like in a stone age (the game IS older) - combat felt terribly clunky, animations were bad, crafting terrible and mostly not really needed....

But somehow, i liked Mars better, so here is my thumbs up.

A very late review but better late than never. This was probably one of the very first Steam games I did finish. It was quite good. Like a little gem in the great ocean of shovelwares on Steam. The gameplay might be a little bit clunky (but not a problem at all if you grew up playing the far more clunkier games of the 90's and early 00's) but not an issue. However, the story is really good and since it's set on Mars.. anyone who loves planet Mars would love it. Also, it doesn't cost much so it's kinda worth the money, especially if you grab it on a sale.

Difficult to recommend, but interesting.

Narration and story is good, but last part feels rushed.

Gameplay (combat) is clunky, until you get used to rythm. It's kinda responsive, but gamepad controls overlap each other, resulting in actions you don't want to make. Enemies ripost instantly and they can overwhelm even on normal difficulty.

You get ~50 skill points during the game. 36sp to max out tree, but aside achievement it's difficult and annoying to play with all points invested into 1 tree.

Story/Pacing/Features:
.Set on the planet of Mars and playing as Roy, a former Technomancer on the run.
.The game has some characters that crossover from a different game of similar lore 'The Technomancer'
.Features a sidekick companion helpful with fights and possible romance options
.Game dialogue is old school rpg fun pulling no punches
.Multiple possible endings depending on in game choices

Gameplay/Controls:
.The combat feels like a cross of the Witcher and the Risen series (relying on flow, timing, rhythm instead of button mash)
.Melee, ranged guns/magic, and gadgets traps provide a bit of variety and tactical gameplay

Similar games played:
.Risen, The Witcher, The Technomancer, Bound By Flame.

Overall:
.Rough around the edges but a fun and enjoyable game. Game Length feels just right and no need for padding.

Like: Story pacing, interesting characters, desolate world setting, and funny dialogue options
Dislike: lack of boss fights, enemy variety, stealth option mechanic is lacking, weapons/armor minor improvements differences

It's had a lot of updates and fixes since the initial release which is great from the developers - especially given the small team. It's not perfect, the stealth is a little slow and it is not a really viable strategy by itself, the voice acting can be good or hammy. The main thing is that the gameplay is good, challenging but not overly so and otherwise satisfying with the skills you gain actually proving useful.

The story is interesting but not particularly special - enough to keep you interested, which is the main thing. There is also a basic reputation system, you can pretty much ignore it if you wish as it doesn't seem to make a big difference to the story.

Overall: A solid and interesting game, slightly generic but good for at least one play through.

A very simple, charming RPG with a surprisingly good setting and background. The plot and story are interesting and solidly written, the dialogue is not very good but is often bad funny. The voice acting is all over the place, the MC is quite good and convincing whereas other characters range from strange to absolutely terrible. It's probably one of the more enjoyable aspects of the game. There's also a surprsing amount of quality animations and cinnamon for it's obviously low budget. This is low budget done right. There is some notable issues around the gameplay such as the crafting, combat and upgrades but it's...quaint and works for what it is.

I feel like Technomancer really missed why this game worked. The ambition here is compact. Instead of wide open areas, everything is tightly controlled, the pacing works with the succinct story in each part. Techmancer really did the opposite and it suffered for it. This is still an enjoyable experience that I recommend heartily to any eurojank aficionado.

Quite an enjoyable game! Saw the trailer back in the days which had a beautiful song, so now i gave the game a shot.

Pro:
- interesting setting, colony on mars, human aftermath, technomancers, mutants etc.
- quite nice voice acting (pretty much all quests are voiced over)
- interesting mix of combat, magic and other weaponry
- good pace of the story and some nice character devlopment
- several pathes to chose (that probably would play different in some missions I assume)

contra:
- much stuff to loot but not really to use (at least on medium, and i was searching for it a little bit, easy to find)
- graphic style good, but also a bit repetitive (same NPC models, enemy models etc)
- a bit static world, but ok game is from 2013
- LOT TO WALK AND RUN!!! no quick travel, go back to NPC A, go then to Area B again etc. Easily 2hours in the 20hours just for that.

Else I would say, play it. its around 15-20 hours good story, interesting story, proper fighting and leveling. fun game i am happy to finally have played.

It is very mediocre. Story is OK. It didn't crash. Mechanics simple but effective. Combat could be a little better. Although a 2013 game it feels older. Enjoyable if bought really cheap. Not worth the current price of £8.99. A bit if entertainment to fill in time.

Yes, for the millionth time, Steam needs a neutral/meh option. I'm going to give this one a pass, only because its world is so compelling and makes up for its myriad of shortcomings. Get it if it's cheap. A 55/100 effort.

The good

Interesting world, well thought out, especially the class division things, virtue names etc
Story is nothing too shabby either
Animations and models are pretty good
So the's music
Combat can be challenging
Reasonable skill trees

The bad

All that backtracking. No fast travel at all - sometimes you need to travel 4-5 zones away for a quest, and run back 4-5 zones to hand it in
Washed out world, everything's an orange-tinted red or brown
Crafting is next to useless
Poor upgrade options for your weapons and armour
A science fiction game and the best they can do is a homemade gun that fires nails...really?
Stealth mechanics are unbalanced
Some variable voice acting

Mars: War Logs is a 3rd person, ARPG where you have to break out of a POW camp on Mars and avoid the authorities trying to recapture you. Think of it as a mix of Total Recall, Dune and Tank Girl, without the AAA budget to fix the gameplay issues. If you like a decent story and don’t mind less than perfect combat then this game is worth a look. If steam offered neutral reviews I would have selected that.

Even though the game is narrated by Innocence (a young adult conscripted to fight), you play as Roy, a solider (now POW) who saves Innocence’s from being abused in in prison and puts his escape plan into action with Innocence’s help. While the story and character development is lacking in the beginning, it fills out once you get to the second chapter, and by the third chapter you have 2 different story paths you can follow, which will change available missions, companions and romance options.

Gameplay is fairly similar to most ARPG’s, with combat being limited to set areas and experience being gained by completing quests. All quests are shown on the map, and hidden items are left around all the stages. The game does a great jobs of making you scrounge for items and cash, as the only way to reliably get money is to extract water from downed enemies (which gives you a bad reputation and affects morality bonuses you receive- think tank girl). The perk system contains 3 upgrade paths, which can focus you either more on stealth & ranged combat, straight up brawling damage or techomancy (your electrical superpowers- think force lightning). You would be much better served by dabbling a bit in each (as bonuses stack, however if you are chasing achievements then need to focus on one, which will only become full by the end of the second chapter). Stealth is an option and can allow you to take out 1 or 2 enemies before real combat begins.

Combat can be janky and it feels like it needs a bit more polish. On easier difficulties combat is a total cakewalk. On harder difficulties it can feel almost impossible (it feels a lot like Bound by Flame), where you spend most of your time blocking or evading, and counting when possible. Your selected upgrades can really help here, as many of the first tier make combat much more survivable if you select a few before dumping points into the higher tier perks. Enemies will swarm you and strike from behind, where the camera doesn’t allow you to see the attack coming. Your starting companion is useless, with the rest only marginally better until you max your reputation to the highest level which allows them to actually help in a fight. The companion AI isn’t the best so there is a good chance of them taking you with AOE attacks if they have them. The late game companions are much better, but you only have them for a little while before the game ends.

Stage design and layout wasn’t too bad. Each area looks like how it should - a dystopian slum looks run down with people laying on the ground, prisons look bleak, everything is covered in red sand. Everyone looks like they live in abject poverty. While the stages aren’t linear you are mostly funnelled to where you need to go for main story quests and combat, with the differences being which mix of enemies (and amount you will fight). You don’t have the option of exploring multiple tiers (there no jumping) so you are exploring a flat path the environment does a good job of making it feel alive.

The game isn’t without flaws however. A lot of character assets are reused, and this is really noticeable in the first areas and cutscenes (it gets better once you hit the second chapter). If the brightness is set too high, it really highlights the blandness/chunkiness of characters’ models and texture of the environment (the game was released in 2013). Character animation sometimes looks like it hasn’t been rendered correctly (hands at wrong angles). Movement can be slightly janky, as you can get caught on invisible object and prevented from moving, though this does affect the AI as well. I’ve had the camera lose where I am (sits above the character instead of behind) which usually ends in death during combat. The hit detection in combat could be tightened, as sometime you get hit when you are nowhere near enemies, or miss when you are close. Sometimes the vocal tracks are placed too close to each other, so the natural pause between finishing a sentence and the start of the next one is non-existent, wrecking otherwise good voice acting. None of the above are game stopping, but detract from the game.

If you are chasing 100% achievements then it’s possible, but requires at least one play through on extreme difficulty, and requires a save from the end of character 2 so you can choose the other faction to side with. Everything else will come naturally though normal gameplay. I recommended playing on a harder difficulty, otherwise you will likely finish the game quite quickly.

Janky af, terrible voice acting, awkward gameplay.

Despite these shortcomings, the lore of this world is really great and the atmosphere gives off the same vibes as a sci-fi B-Movie like Riddick or Priest.

There is a strong charm to all aspects of the game because you can really see that the developers cared about creating a fun world for us to play in. Unfortunately, due to budgetary restrictions, their vision falls quite a bit short.

This game is still worth your time, especially if you like bioware style games and fleshed out worlds.

Spiders was known for being one of the contenders for king of Eurojank during the 2010's and Mars: War Logs is one of the reasons why. In many ways this game reminds me of Witcher 1 and 2. The dialogue and plot are honestly kind of a mess like in the Witcher 1. The combat is a mess like the combat in the Witcher 2. But despite that, like the early days of CD Projekt RED, i think what Spiders accomplished here, past all the very obvious budget limitations, is actually quite impressive given their very limited resources at the time. The actual world of Mars: War Logs is incredibly interesting and unique among scifi if you can get past the bad presentation (and the fact that it doesn't really make sense how humans are able to breath just fine and Mars' gravity seems to be the exact same as Earth's). And most importantly for any video game, I somehow enjoyed my time with this game when on the surface it had no right to keep my interest. Past all the jank, there is still a fun game to be had here. The ending is rushed, but at least this game doesn't overstay its welcome. Here's to hoping that one day Spiders is able to revisit this cool world that they have created but with an actual budget and skills learned from years of making games that never quite got there in execution (something much better than the Technomancer).

Its a clunky, short but well written game. I got it after GreedFall to see what Spiders started out with.

The story is gritty and well written. The Cutscenes are well made. The Main Character is hard to get into and remains a bit of a mystery even when you finish the game. Likeable nonetheless.

Combat is nothing to write home about. Once you get into it its fairly easy.

Even though you might get frustrated sometimes with having to open a door/climb a wall every few steps, fighting the same enemies and sometimes getting stuck in terrain, its a fun game just to soak in the worldbuilding and story you are presented.

If youre planning on playing The Technomancer this game is absolutely a must play. After playing both games you get the whole picture on some happenings.

Otherwise its a hard pass even for 2€ on sale.

Just no.

It starts off very interesting then evolves into frustrating combat mechanics and rolling around the screen like a lunatic. lol. Im sure the story is good, but I couldnt stick with the silly and chaotic combat.

Im not even speaking in terms of difficulty, but its clunky, rolling around is your best defence, your companion is broken and does nothing, the targeting can be wonky, camera angles while targeted will get you killed.

Spiders took a step forwards in world building and atmosphere here but a huge leap backwards in terms of combat mechanics making it a chore rather than exciting.

The 'lock on' feature is truly abysmal, you also cannot remove it after you use it in each fight.
Maybe worth it if it's on sale for £3.
Can kill a day with it you don't have anything better to do.
Story is reasonable, writing is a bit pants in places.
Gameplay is pretty boring.
The running back and forth is annoying.
I would honestly give this a neutral rating, if not for the story being fairly interesting i would have just stopped and uninstalled it after a couple of hours.
The graphics are pretty good though.

TLDR: Though underfunded/rushed, a decent classic RPG. Very nice story and interesting characters, very satisfying and difficult combat. Not so satisfying animation and endings.

Mars war logs is in no way perfect, but you have to enter with an open mind knowing, it was made by like 5 people. Credits in the end of the game take about 2 minutes to finish, compare that with Mass Effect's 15 minutes and millions in budget.

You play as Roy, middle aged badass with heterochromia, who can spawn lightnings using his mind and a questionable fluid substance. He specializes in melee combat, which is fine since guns are apparently very scarce on Mars. You find yourself in the middle of a war, captured by the opposing forces. The story is surprisingly personal and non-bombastic which was very refreshing to me. You can only affect situations that are humanly possible, though you do occasionally fight giant monsters too.

Now your task is to find allies, fight your way through endless waves of respawning enemies, help the citizens of 3 neat hubs and maintain your reputation and relationships. You even get a token romance! You get lots of choices that can shift the story in a few ways, be the good or bad guy, be a patriot or an anarchist.

What can turn some people off is probably the lack of fast travel option. Though it's not as bad as in the successor game, it can really be annoying and make the whole experience tedious and boring. Another thing is the combat, especially in the beginning it's extremely difficult, even on the low difficulty settings. The only way to get through that is to grit your teeth and try your best. Once you start upgrading your character, it will get much easier. Very high risk and high reward, it is what makes it very satisfying later. You also get a simple crafting system to help you deal more damage.

The different endings are told, not shown, which is a shame but it makes sense in such a small project with limited resources. I'm still so glad I didn't let myself be turned away by the 1/3 of negative reviews. If you're a fan of classic RPG and can look past some very unpolished low budget symptoms, you will probably like this one.

I really wanted to like this game, but it was so painful to finish. It was just... boring. I finished it, but I was so done with it hours before I got to the end. And don't get me wrong, I adore RPGs (especially with narrative choices) and sci-fi/cyberpunk is awesome. But this game just didn't pull me in - and I really tried.

It had a lot of potential - the game plays pretty well and the concept seems intriguing...
But even though I played every quest available to me, I don't feel like I actually learned anything about the world or much about the characters.

All in all it took about 8 hours to finish. A lot of the quests require a lot of backtracking through the same areas, just now there's enemies again. So quests take a while but it doesn't feel like you've made much progress.

As a note: I learned more about the world through a Wikipedia page (or some other external online page) after finishing the game than I did actually playing the game. And the what was described made the world much more interesting... but the game never talked about these details. Clearly work was put into the world, but it wasn't relayed to the player.

This game starts so slow. I almost game up in the first two quests. The whole prison chapter is dull, with missions that feel like they don't add up to anything.
The following two chapters make it up though. They're dynamic, you have multiple companions and you learn about the place and it's people. There's also some choices that have consequences.
Overall It's not a great game. Graphics feel behind for it's time, most characters do not have depth, voice acting is relatively good, story is reasonable.
I would recommend it for the price (15$ at the time).

I have noticed this game a long time ago but decided to play after the experience of Greed by the same Spiders. Though I assume great progress from War Logs to Greed, I'd still recommend this early title to those who like good RPG and dream of the red planet. The Martian Chronicles by Bradbury? Ghosts of Mars by John Carpenter? Total recall? Red Faction game series? If you love all of this, here an interesting new journey awaits you.
I won’t list the flaws of the game for the story, RPG element, voice acting, and the main protagonist saved Mars: War Logs for me. I just say what was a really sad thing to me: what I like ends very soon. And it’s not because the game is so brilliant that I wished it never ends. No, the game is good, but what is definitely good in it could have been given to a player in a lager amount.
Well, let’s now see what The Technomancer has to offer.

Honest 5 minute Review, (From the mind of a simple critic) Industrial Gamers!

Storyline. Very Basic, not many options to make the story your own but is still quite a fun adventure on its own. Pretty repetitive side missions keep you busy while on the track through the main story.

Graphics. It's what you'd expect from a game made in 2013 but still quite beautiful. Open skies don't exist so expect metal to be mainly what you'd see.

Controls. This is where I have to be rude, it is not made for keyboards. To change between abilities gets frustrating because you can only use 1-10 on your keyboard to macro them. I'm not a person who uses 1-10 allot so it became difficult to me at some instances. The combat does get easy enough if you've played Dark Souls though.

Sound. World sound is great until you walk into a city. Most areas in the city you'd be by an alleyway with no-one in sight and still hear a crowd as if they're behind you..

How long to beat. Took me 8 hours to beat with the story-line and 12 with the side quest/gathering aspect of it.

Final Rating - I'd give this game a 6 out of 10. The story-line is what really sealed the deal for me. Combat was pretty lackluster in my opinion but hopefully the 2016's Technomancer solves most of the prequels problems. Look for that review soon!

I tried for several struggling hours to like this game and get to the end of it. I tried against my common sense and my sense of taste, because it had something to it and gave me hope it could still get better. It didn't, so after hours of walking back and forth mostly down the same alleys populated by the same random encounters, I give up and uninstall. It's a strange game, it has some nice things, a good if not overly original settings, good atmosphere too, but design wise it's too awkward.
It becomes a running (a terrible running animation moreover) simulator doing tasks for weirdly smoothly rendered people with the most awkward combat system ever. Fighting the Dogs for example makes some old PS1 games combat systems feel smooth and smart.
And I (and tons of people with me, according to the forums) didn't manage to use the controller because apparently the only way to do that is to first unplug keyboard and mouse and start the game (yes, i love the idea of bending behind my desk and reach for the USB ports every time i wanna play), and the time i did try that, it didn't recognize it anyway. And the mouse isn't locked on screen, so while fighting it does alt-tab as the mouse clicks outside of the display, and quite a few times it got stuck there.
The story is as flat as it could get, and while the characters are not terrible, the way they are put together unfortunately is
Once i had to shut down the computer completely due to a bug. IT's a pity cause it had something to it as I said, but too badly implemented and designed. Gets a 40/100 from me, I couldn't finish it.

- Decent, interesting story.
- Lots of quests.
- Choices.
- Graphics aren't bad for a game from 2013, though they don't matter much to me anyway.
- Combat can be a little janky at times, but it didn't really bother me.
- Companions are a little lacklustre. Not terrible, but not particularly appealing story or personality wise.

Had to go back and play this because it's been 7 years since I last played it and I didn't remember much of it. It's a good game, which I'm starting to see is a Spiders specialty. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but a game that keeps my interest until the end, is a game I'm going to recommend.

I love the setting to this game. Most other aspects are decent but unremarkable - fairly typical western RPG gameplay, acceptable graphics but nothing to write home about, interesting character concepts but not very fleshed out. But the struggles between different groups on a future colonised Mars make for a great backdrop.

The sequel (The Technomancer) came out in 2016 and is a major improvement in most ways. I'd probably recommend playing that first even though it does make a bunch of references to this game. But if you enjoy that one and want more from the same setting, the original is an enjoyable follow-up.

Overlooked gem. I really like Spiders. I like Bound By Flame's apocalyptic fantasy setting a little more, but the scifi dystopic future Mars setting is amazing. The combat is a little slower, more defensive and clunky, but honestly like Bound By Flame I like it (although I like Bound By Flame's a bit better). Looking forwards to playing the Technomancer.

Play on a easier setting unless you're ready to staple enemies with the staple gun though. Extreme is...Extreme.

A messy, shallow, repetitive experience on a purely mechanical level, but inside there is a heart and soul that honestly touches on a couple of strings here and there. A bigger budget and it would've been really decent, but even now it has this pull that makes one come back and enjoy it, despite grinning at its silliness half of the time. Good effort, well worth playing <3.

Maybe I'm not the target audience but I have played repetitive games where you alternate between fighting and fetching stuff while upgrading yourself, like the Mad Max and Rage games. But this one could have benefited from more visual variety and there are so many unpolished parts that were let downs when set against the amazing lore. An okay game I suppose.

The game is a prequel + side story (2013) to The Technomancer (2016).

An okay budget RPG adventure game from Spider. It has it's flaws.
-The areas are small
-Combat is very simple
-Stealth is clumsy
-Camera can be a pain in combat
-Characters besides Roy don’t get much screen time or story
-Graphics are okay 2005.

The story is not a big epic adventure to save the world. It’s a story about Roy on Mars where things ain’t exactly flowers and sun shine. Which is fine.

The game was made by a small team with limited time and money. But if you find it on sale, give it a chance.

3/5 Stars

Very short game. Played on Hard at first and switched to Medium (Hard was very doable, but it gets tedious)

Early verdict: 6/10 Recommend to buy on Deep Sale

Gameplay 6/10
Very repetitive, not much of enemy variety. Got crafting and upgrading (equipment and skills), but all too shallow to make it memorable. Although it does help to dish out extra damage.
Very few equipment to choose from.
Sooo many back-and-forth, and semi-re-spawning enemies which is more than a nuisance than a challenge (hence the lowering difficulty)

Story 7/10:
Not bad actually. Despite how short the game is, it explains quite a lot on the world and the dynamics between factions.

Graphics 6/10:
For a 2013 game I expected better, but then again, it's a small Spider game.
And very few variety for location, but then again, see above.
Industrial is industrial, a crap ton of brownish dusty areas, and some copy pasted tunnels/dungeon.
Overall gloomy atmosphere (not a minus, fits the theme of the game)

Voice acting 7/10:
Surprisingly solid. Yes there are some less than good ones here and there, but overall, I liked it.
Props to most of the VAs.

Story 6/10:
Considering the constraints (short game, small world). I'm satisfied.
There are choices to be made that will probably change the journey and ending, but I can't be arsed to do another tedious playthrough just to see all of em.

It's an OK game, nothing to write home about. But enjoyable enough that you get your (discount price) money's worth.

Amateur of all trades, master of none.

Has action oriented, timing based combat, against healthboosted enemies that take way too many hits compared to the player.
Player dictated, dialouge driven NPC interactions. with bad voice-acting and under-animated models.
Level up system for combat skills and character progression that is completely unbalanced and can fool the player into leveling up something useless.

Not worth it's full price and only a worthy purchase for people who enjoy some of the finer details about its narrative.

Linear RPG, with fetch quests and close quarter combat. Poor world and story building, serviceable voice-acting. It wasn't for me.

More Details
The game loop consists of putting the player in a small'ish area and have them accomplish various fetch quests, before moving onto another area. Cut scenes develop the story, but not very well (more on this later). No self-made goals, we're on rails. Not necessarily a bad thing, but quest repetitiveness, cramped combat, and lack of world/story building didn't work for me.

The fetch quests felt random and denizens would have done at least a few themselves if the story was coherent. An example is the quest where
the protagonist finds a remedy for rabid dogs. Rabid dogs would have been a huge problem in the context of a understaffed prison
. A prisoner doing all this (simple) leg work on behalf of guards doesn't make sense. It's a well-threaded RPG trope that people will compensate the protagonist for the simplest tasks, but it didn't fly well in the context of a mature story line. It was immersion breaking and did nothing to establish the world, characters and factions as believable entities.

I'm not sure if the game builds on pre-existing IP, but I was confused at times. Without spoiling anything, the protagonist and henchman go back to their own faction at some point and are initially welcomed, but later attacked by guards. This is made more confusing by guards either attacking or asking the protagonist does (paid) work for them. Another big one is that
our protagonist is apparently an ex-technomancer, but without any of the physical scars other technomancers have throughout the game
. This is a big reveal at the end of act I, but one that fell flat for me as it should have been obvious. I also didn't understand the role technomancers played in the world. They seem to be a ruling aristocratic class, but are trained as warriors as well. It seemed to fit the Sith lords schema, with mentor and apprentice, but that wasn't explained. It was also anti-climactic to see a supposedly powerful technomancer and his retinue
being easily defeated by two ill-equipped and presumably underfed prisoners
. These things add up.

The voice acting was serviceable, but didn't quite work at key moments. Our henchmen is aptly called Innocence, but unfortunately not believable as a wild-eyed youngster not acquainted with the harshness of the world he grew up in. At some point there is a large
mutant rebellion
. This would presumably involve more than 3 people, but 3 people is all you see. Ambient sounds don't match what you see either. Loud cantina? You hear none of it. Overall, too much suspension of disbelief was required, it all felt like cardboard.

It's a shame really. The production value was almost there, with well-made environments. I'm sure the world could have been interesting as well, had it been developed more consistently.

For a -75% discount price it hits on Steam sales I recommend it to get for the time when you have no other RPG to play or just for one weekend at home.

It's average, but definitely playable. Has an interesting setting as well, but you don't get to find out much about it and the game is just 8 hours long.

+ interesting setting
+ gloomy and atmospheric music
+ somewhat intriguing story at times

= voice acting is meh, but you get used to it

- dialogues are often silly
- maps are just tiny corridors
- UI straight from a console
- short (8h long)

Extremely janky game, with clunky combat system, bad animations, issues with lighting and optimisation problems. I decided to buy it on sale because I finished its successor - Technomancer - and was wondering about the story in this one. Unfortunately, I am not able to play this and cannot recommend it to anybody. Running there and back in a small camp for almost two hours, talking and fighting was more exhausting than I anticipated and my curiosity wasn't strong enough to get through the beginning. While the Technomancer's combat system was pretty similar to this, it was still a few levels higher, in almost every aspect, than this. Fortunately the authors are getting better and better with each game and their last creation is already on my wishlist.
