https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1541504683

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1541502839

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1541506701

The game is ok. It's not bad, it's fun. But it's also kind of boring.
The setting and the story are nice, and it keeps you engaged at times. Main problem for me was the same thing other reviewers have pointed out: traveling is slow, repetitive and annoying. A simple thing like fast travel would make the whole experience so much better.
Old school point and click gamers will probably enjoy it.
For me, there's something missing.

This game would have been waaaaaay better with fast travel. The problem is that it takes a couple of minutes to go from location to location due to having to go through the dialogue options to get where you want to go and the slow walking from one end of the screen to the ticket booth, not including the map mini-game which I actually enjoyed. For a point and click game that requires you to go back and forth between cities constantly, it will drive you crazy and unfuns the game.

Most of the game is dialogue puzzles; doing the right conversation topics. The conversations require you to drag a button onto the character even though you are talking to that character. That's just bad UI. The puzzles go from 0 to 100 real quick.

The game is easy generally, but does require some pixel hunting which is another big thumbs down IMO.

The voice acting is cardboard, especially the main character.

I did enjoy the atmosphere and story, but bad gameplay mechanics, bad voice acting, and tedious travel make this a big thumbs down. Add in fast travel and easier to navigate dialogue UI (why try to reinvent the wheel with tile/button dragging, all you created was a square) and the game would improve immensely.

This is an avarage game... the story of Mata makes it a liitle bit fun to play but other than that you would need special motivation. During the game to travel around the cities you have visit the train station again and again and it makes things even more boring. A map or quick travel would be great. Puzzles are few and easy... There are also some bugs and game stucks without you realizing which would end up you travelling back and forth without an outcome. Naaah

I play a lot of point n click games, and even in the roughst ones (Mystery of the Druids, Art of Murder, Murders on Tehran, My Boyfriend the Space Tyrant...) there is something that still pushes me to go forward and see where it goes. Mata Hari is about one of the most fascinating historical figures of the 20th century, with a great work on graphics and pretty much streamlined. It is unbearable. It is boring. It is irritating. It is probably the worst adventure I played in many years. I don't know what the ex Lucasarts guys Hal Barwood (also behind the script of one of the top fantasy 80s movies, Dragonslayer) and Noah Falstein were doing in there, what ideas they had, but it is clear that Cranberry were very green and there were a lot of conflicts in developing Mata Hari.Everything is disjointed, badly written, amateurish. The minigames are boring. There is some effort with the speed of walking and double clicking and that is the best I can say about it. Honestly, one of the worst games of any kind in my library.

Mata Hari is a point and click adventure game centered around WWI espionage. The plot is based on a real person, but the writing is generally pretty bad. The dialogue for nearly every character is awkward and unnatural. Gameplay is tedious and doesn't make you want to keep playing. It is certainly a unique game, but it usually fails to hold your attention. Not an awful game, but would need a lot of work to be good.

THE CASE FOR
Based on the real historical figure, you play as the famous exotic dancer/courtesan/spy. You engage with the game world not by shooting and punching but by dancing, seducing, investigating, solving puzzles and avoiding the law and enemy agents, the kind of variety and originality that mainstream games still struggle to even get close to more than 10 years later.

THE CASE AGAINST
It's shocking that with such a fascinating premise, they still managed to make a surprisingly dull game. Maybe they assumed that by using real life people they wouldn't have to put any work into making them interesting, because the game does not make the most basic efforts to introduce, let alone make us want to get to know any of its characters. Mata herself is completely one-note throughout the whole game, and the supporting characters are virtually indistinguishable from one another. The events that unfold throughout the story are supposed to be a big deal, but everything happens off screen and nothing seems to affect the protagonist at all. Neither her victories nor her failures seem to have any impact, and the consequences of her actions are barely mentioned in passing in consistently dispassionate dialogue. The game skips ahead several years in between episodes, and you're left wondering why they even bothered, because the only thing that seems to change in the game world is the color of Mata's dress. Even the settings, which are probably the best realized aspect of the game, are not affected in the least. The story is supposed to expand all throughout Europe, but the game ends up feeling pretty claustrophobic, as there's very little to explore, you get to see all of its locations pretty early on, and you end up spending most of the time jumping between the same four locations anyway.

THE VERDICT
For all its flaws, I'm not recommending against playing it. It's pretty short and it's worth at least going through it once, but it's best to go in with very, very low expectations.

Solid point & click adventure, I enjoyed it. Puzzles are not hard, it's more like story driven adventure. All dialogues have voice overs, nice soundtrack and art. Some historical references - your main character is Mata Hari - real person, there are other historical figures you know from school history class. I'm not sure if this game is 100% historically accurate but it's fun to play.

Played on Debain 10, Nvidia drivers, Proton 4.2 - worked out of the box.

Like some other reviewers I find it difficult to give this game a pure thumbs up or down. It does have a charm to it--where else can one drug a man to sleep and steal his secrets while dressed in a nightie and high heels? The problem lies not in the story but in the game play. First, there is A LOT of traveling between countires and while the attempt to turn this into a minigame might have meant well it quickly becomes tedious. Second, I thought the the difficulty of the minigames ramped up quickly, espeically the dance one. I know you don't have to be a dancer to finish the game but I hate it when not having great twitch reflexes gets in the way of playing the game how I want to play it--frustration is not equal to fun. Some people are going to love this game but I didn't. The story and the setting simply couldn't overcome what I experienced as poor game play.

Its an average game, the story doesn't really get engaging until towards the end.

The puzzles are decent, the graphics are meh, but not atrocious. The voice acting is done very well and makes up for any lack of polish the game may have.

The main character seems a bit out of touch with reality in some cases.

It would make a good stocking stuffer for anyone who enjoys point and click adventures.

Really enjoyed this adventure game!! It's different than the average point-and-click adventure game in that the decisions made by the player will change how the story unfolds. Which, in turn, affects your scoring at games end. You play as Mata Hari and are recruited as a spy. As story progresses, you end up becoming a double agent. As with point-and-click adventure games, it is somewhat linear. However ... the key is to strategize. You're a spy. Stop and think. Even though some characters may suggest you go to one country, try going a different route via a different country first. There are side 'missions' that are at play while completing primary missions at hand. With my first playthrough, I pretty much did what I thought I was 'supposed' to do per the character interactions to get what I needed to further the story. My score was pretty sad at games end and I didn't understand why. On my second playthrough, I took more time, chose different routes than suggested by characters, tried to avoid interaction with certain characters until necessary, and was delightfully surprised that I could do much more than I thought. Any adventure gamer will really enjoy this game!!!!
(I would love to see achievements and cards added to this game!!!!)
