Pros:
Completely and utterly unique
Has that classic early 2000's charm and wit
So much raw, powerful style
Greatly improved gameplay depth and variety over the first
Weapons and throwables are perfectly balanced and incredibly varied
Is just a fucking blast to play

Cons:
Garbage final boss
Only lets you play on the easiest difficulty until you beat it once
Sometimes the level design is perfect, sometimes its on the confusing side
Hard crashes ever once in a while (like only way to fix it is to turn off your pc hard)

9/10, You should play it at least once

Buy this game before its gone.

To anyone that is interested in buying max payne 2 or 1 I recommend doing it now before the remake is published. When gta definitive edition launched rockstar removed san andreas, vice city, and 3 from steam forcing you to buy the $60 remaster on the rockstar launcher. That remaster was an absolute disaster and you can't even get the original games anymore. Rockstar has shown that they don't care about fans and only care about money so you should expect 1 and 2 to be pulled from steam soon.

Pros
1. Story, setting, presentation and characters are compelling once again.
2. Background music
3. Gameplay seems more fluent and with minor additions

Cons
1. Graphics, although better than the first one

Summary
Everything that the first game did, this game almost did it again but with a bit smoother gameplay and a little better graphics. It had a bad moment in which I got lost and I wouldn't mind some guidance in terms of where I was supposed to go, but other than that the gameplay was ok for a simple 3rd person shooter with the main goal being to intrigue someone with its presentation and keep them in their toes with its mostly fast paced action.
If you liked the first one, you will like this one too.

Setting and presentation => 10/10
Story => 8/10
Gameplay => 6.5/10

Max Payne 2 is an excellent sequel that evolves from the classic and stimulates the senses and emotions more strongly than before.

It's sadly quite short and easy unless on a proper difficulty, but Max Payne 2 is just a joy to experience (and replay with mods that are still available) , boasting outstanding writing and voice acting, satisfying gun play and an amazing soundtrack, gut punching you from start to finish.

I love this game. Some of the best writing I've ever heard; perfect tongue-in-cheek noir. Its hilarious yet still gripping. This one can be a little bit silly but its easy to overlook, especially for the benefits it brings. The voice acting is also really good. Probably not as much attention to detail as the first game but its still very good. The TV shows in particular are amazing (featuring the original Max Payne guy). The graphics are great and the physics and lighting are great for the time.

The level design and AI can be awkward sometimes so that I don't feel I can pull off all the cool shit I want to, and it would be impossible without quicksaving, but it is supposed to be tough going. There were times the AI burst through doors or turned corners and instantly shot me without a chance to react (even with bullet-time). The levels are long however so theres plenty of opportunities to pull off awesome stunts, and health and ammo are really well distributed. The AI responds to player actions and the environment. The levels themselves are great, with plenty of variety while wholly maintaining the core gameplay. The core gameplay is basically The Matrix.

The game is incredibly well put together and is a near-perfect sequel to Max Payne. There isn't an experience quite like these games.

Being a sequel to one of the greatest shooters ever released usually means that it won't be as held in high regard as its predecessor, but I'd argue that Max Payne 2 is just as great, if not better than the first game in a lot of aspects, namely in graphics, presentation, storytelling and even gameplay, Remedy have done an outstanding job improving on what was, and still is, an excellent game for its sequel, I might even dare say that it is more fun than its predecessor! (not to discredit the first game of course.)

Unlike the first game, it's mostly playable out of the box. The only issue is the widescreen resolutions still stretch the game. Again, this is easy to fix, just follow the FixItAll guide in Steam's community hub.

For me, the entire Max Payne trilogy is a must play for every shooter fan, whether playing for the first time or going through them again out of nostalgia like I am, I simply can not recommend them enough.

This game was a huge improvement compared to Max Payne 1, which was a huge bug fest. The story is great, graphics are decent, weapons are crisp. For an old game, this is definitely underrated and still enjoyable at this age. The atmosphere was perfectly done which allows the player to enjoy the game even more. Definitely recommended.

Doesn't waste a single moment, not in the gameplay and not in storytelling. The grim atmosphere and plot absorbs you in right from the start until the very end. The gameplay is simple and straightforward but doesn't get stale at any point. Can be played through all in one breath.

Max Payne is back for the second time and this time he is even more aggressive.

+Graphics(the graphics are well maintained)
+Gameplay
+Story(excellent story as good as the first part)
+Action Noir

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne offers a new terrifying and dark story experience from Max's life, plus a lot of action and a lot of suspense.

Even though the game is beautiful at the age of 18, it is still well maintained.

Max Payne 2 was the best out of the three games in the trilogy in my opinion. It kept the same noir style that 1 had but 3 didn't, and was better made than one with a better story. I found myself using bullet time more often because the shooting mechanics in this game were much better than 1's awful shooting which wasn't hitting anything. I also think the story in this game was better written than 1's, it really emphasized on what Max was going through throughout the game and I think they did that much better than 1.

Max Payne 2 is a masterpiece, and one of the greatest stories to ever come from a video game. Sam Lake's improved writing is immediately apparent, with Max often spewing some of the most quotable lines in any game, ever. While it's gunplay isn't as polished as Max Payne 3, bullet time is still a really enjoyable mechanic and lends to some excellent shooting sections.

I hope a spiritual successor will one day tackle Max Payne's gritty aesthetic and setting at the same level of quality.

Upgrade from the first game in nearly every way mechanically. Definitely a much shorter experience and the story I felt was better in some aspects within the first game, but it doesn't take away from the fact that this game somehow managed to improve upon so many things that already made its predecessor so great.

Bullet time is a lot more fluid and easy to use now, enemies die easier depending on where you shoot them (first game was similar but they were way more sponge-y), enemy placement is also a lot better and feels less cheap (I don't recall any enemies hiding behind a corner and one-shotting me in this game), and the environment was a lot more immersive too.

There were also no sound issues in this game, which is definitely a welcome change, since I don't need to go out of my way to look for another fix.

If there is one thing I wish were better though, it would be the nightmare sequences. I felt genuinely unsettled by them in the first game, and it added a lot to the experience, especially since there were only two, and they were pretty few and far between.

This game's nightmare sequences appear more frequently and are way more trippy/psychedelic than just purely scary or unsettling. It's a small nitpick though, which doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Pick this game up now. Pure masterpiece.

The story of Max Payne 2 is honestly one of my favorites in gaming. The many twists and turns you go through during the course of the game will keep you entertained for hours. The gunplay is improved from the first game, and the added effects of bullet time makes every battle fresh and engaging as you blow your enemies away in style.

Just as good as the original, if not better. In my opinion the writing is much improved with more interesting plot threads, despite being seemingly a cliche noir story. The cello rendition of the main theme is still one of my favorite video game themes of all time. The gameplay is much more polished and easier, which is for the better:
You are much more resistant to damage than in MP1 (you can take 2,5 pump action shotgun shots, instead of being one shot), plus enemies are a bit less bullet spongy. You receive a lightning quick reload in Bullet Time, no matter the weapon, which makes shotguns more powerful (shotguns sucked in the first game). Additionally, Bullet Time slowly regenerates, and it slows time down even further, the more people you kill in a single BT activation (up to 3 times). There are also plenty of Quality of Life fixes e.g. being able to stay down after a dive, and continue shooting.
This makes the game much easier however, despite all of this, you still have to be rather careful, shotguns are still outclassed by automatic weapons, and painkillers are fewer while enemies are more numerous.

MP2 is my favorite Max Payne game and well worth the try.

Depressing but deeply touching games. These games makes you want to take pain killers and drink alcohol to sooth the pain of living everyday life. It also shows a good representation of how a man can be a failure even when trying to fix things the right way but he still keeps on screwing it up. Some people are meant for happiness others are meant for misery in life. Max Payne is in the middle trying to find his place among the living. There is definitely a good dark noir themed setting and story within these two games something you see rarely in more modern games. I also had a hard time exiting the game. I'm sorry about that. I got distracted by the pink flamingos on the TV screens.

Max Payne 2 is Very Good

Max Payne 2 the sequel to Max Payne improves a lot on the original mechanics of the first game and is a good continuation of the story of Max Payne showing his journey through New York and how he got to this point in his life. I would definitely recommend this game because its a clear Improvement to the first. I would also recommend it if you have played through the first Max Payne for the story.

The storytelling and the scenario itself reached a highter (and in my eyes even more mature) level than in the first game, the graphics were as good as they were possible back then (even current titles have a hard time creating as good character graphics as Max Payne 2 had) and the action itself is as exciting and cool as it can be. And also there are some nice bonusses such as the alternate ending on the highest difficulty and the Dead Man Walking mode, featuring a local high score table. In my eyes simply one of the best games ever. And for all those who oppose: What better third person shooters are there? What games feature a more intelligent and thrilling story? Seriously: I don't know any.

A textbook example of a sequel that improves upon every aspect of the prior game. While I personally don't enjoy coming back to Max Payne 2 nearly as much as the first game, and I think the darker and sombre story clashes with the over-the-top gameplay, its leap-and-bound improvements in graphics, polish and writing make it one of the best third-person shooters ever made. Arguably Remedy's best game to this day.

It's dark, gritty, gloomy and quite a headfuck at times. But it also teaches us that there is no problem in life that popping 8 bottles of pills in a row can't help

Small disclaimer: i do have a certain level of nostalgia for Max Payne as i fondly remember watching my dad play through them when i was younger, I decided to play them myself and i have to say i think they hold up really well today, especially 2.

The first game does feel like it has aged a little worse but i still think it's worth the time especially for a low price on sale, 2 feels better in just about every way. Shooting is snappy bullet time is fantastic as always and you can definitely feel the production value on this one is a step above.

Overall if you're in the mood for a gritty tale about a detective who probably should have seen a therapist about 5 years ago, enjoy some third person shooting and don't mind older games graphics then i'd very much recommend this classic that has aged as well as Max's favourite Whisky

Welcome to the sequal of Max Payne franchise.

The game continuation of Max Payne after average for his wife and daughter. It's more reveal more on the side characters if the previous game.

The game is surprisingly not that hard compare to previous one. The duration is almost the same with previous one too.

The game basically can run in any new pc without lag.

8/10 PAIN

Amazing game. Brought back a lot of childhood memories. The attention to detail and effects for a 2003 game are simply mindblowing. Back then, they really took care of a game.
Im really hoping for a remaster of all three games.

If you havent played this yet then wtf are you doing?

You're going to need a widescreen fix.

“A giant-headed Captain BaseballBat-Boy costume lay in the back seat.”

The extent to which you like Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne depends on your commitment to the first game’s so-gritty-it’s-silly shtick (it certainly doesn’t depend on the duff title). The franchise is a pretentious neo-noir with overwritten dialogue and indulgently dark storylines, but where Max Payne took itself very seriously the sequel is here to have fun—a lot of it.

Its newfound ability to wink at players makes Max Payne 2 the superior game, but it has plenty more going for it as well.

Two years after avenging the murder of his wife and newborn child in a bloody crusade, Max Payne is back as a detective on the NYPD. Responding to a shots fired leads him to the warehouse of an old ally, the Russian mobster Vladimir Lem, and pulls him into the orbit of a dark conspiracy primed to set the city ablaze. Max's only lead is a crew of killers operating in the guise of the ‘Squeaky Cleaning Company’, which throws him into the path of the ominous Mona Sax—a femme fatale Max falls—yeah—very much in love with it.

Max Payne 2 is pulp. It knows this and is not ashamed, flirting with the absurdity of its own premise in a series of entertaining and occasionally inventive levels. A trip through an on-the-nose, fake-television show themed fun-house springs to mind, which the game flips on its head more than once. There’s also a sequence involving the series’ Captain BaseballBat-Boy gag that is the right side of fun, which is invariably the side Max Payne 2 lands on.

The bullet-time is much improved, benefiting from the developers’ implementation of the Havok physics engine. The Cleaners are blown away in suitably ludicrous fashion, collapsing through the now (relatively speaking) dynamic environments and tumbling down stairs and over balconies. It’s such a boon to the combat which, like the first game, is really all there is to the gameplay.

Fortunately Max Payne 2 is short, and, unlike the first, it ends before becoming too much of a slog. Some folks consider this a strike against it, but there’s nothing wrong with a game that concludes exactly when it needs to (providing you aren’t paying full price for it, I suppose!).

“It was Vlad’s excuse—fate.”

The very fact a Max Payne game needs to be short so as to avoid tedium suggests there’s an inbuilt flaw. I think there is—it’s a shooting gallery that struggles to innovate with its central conceit, although this sequel tries its damnedest to pull free of that self-defeating flaw. There’s more here than in Max Payne which makes its repetitive gameplay more palatable, even if it’s an essentially shorter game.

Repetition still becomes a problem, though. There are multiple escapes from exploding buildings, none of which feel any different from the last. It’s so lazy, but the designers can’t help but fall back on it time and again.

Somehow, even this early, Max Payne was already running out of steam—little wonder it took so long to see a sequel (which I haven’t played!). It's more interested in telling a story than creating absorbing gameplay, which I don't think is a place you want to be in. It means you more-or-less live or die on the strength of that story, and if you're a Max Payne game that's a tricky prospect.

It’s never a good start, for instance, when a story kicks off with a portentous flash to later action, signalling little more than “stuff is going to happen”. There’s a way to do it effectively—to give it purpose—but neither Max Payne nor Max Payne 2 can be said to do so. Its worthlessness is highlighted by the fact that the narrative is able to survive the blunder. Tighter and more focused than the original, Max Payne 2 is hugely compelling, aided and abetted by its marshalling of genre clichés to see it through.

“Love hurts,” drones Max, in the thrall of the game’s best character, one Mona Sax. Sure it does, especially if you’re locked in a near-parodic hard-boiled detective novel. Max is half-convinced he is, and this time the game was happy to let me know it. So it winked.

And I winked back, enjoying the ride.

Bang, you're dead, Max Payne.

Max Payne 2 is a great action game, even fun today. The graphics were next gen back in the day and still look decent today. The slow-motion gameplay gimmick is super unrealistic and so much fun. There's nothing more satisfying than diving into a room slow motion and taking down a room full of thugs before hitting the ground. It's just too good. The rag-doll affects too just add to the fun. Even replaying a scene gives you vastly different reactions to the hits from your bullets.

Bullets are real too. You can see them moving through air in slow-mo. Not many games actually have bullet physics, and not to say this is true physics, but it adds a bit of realism to an already out of this world situation.

The storyline is not super memorable, but it keeps you going. It's the constant action that keeps your interest and in my opinion this is a classic that needs to be played at least once. It just unfortunate that it only lasts 7 hours of gametime to complete the story and there's not much replay value.

This has to be one of the saddest games I've ever played! I played the first years ago but don't remember it, but it's taken me many years to get around to finally playing the sequel.

In 2020 obviously the game is dated but it holds up surprisingly well. It's short but extremely story rich and the way the cut scenes are done is very good - extremely stylish and top notch voice acting all the way through.

I did find that the gameplay itself was lacking in some places though. Some of the levels were very clever but others were rather generic with just seemingly endless corridors and doors. The action is non-stop and enemies are blasting away at you from all directions! At my age now I didn't have a hope of playing it normally (even on the easiest difficulty lol) so I used cheat codes to help me through it so I could simply enjoy the story.

All in all, a fabulous Rockstar production but I did feel very sad at the end! The story is extremely dark indeed. You might want to play something a bit more cheery afterwards!!

Story: Gritty, Tragic with a sarcastic cynical tone.

Verdict: Remedy took the great formula of Max Payne 1 and cranked the fun all the way up and made a great sequel.
it's a shame Rockstar pulled the plug on this series.
9/10 would definitely play it again whenever i need to scratch that bullettime itch.

Trying to improve upon Max Payne was a monumental task but I think Remedy managed to do it. The story is just as well done. The characters are as good as ever. The voice acting was a delight. The graphics have been improved over the original. The clothing detail; hair; gun detail; object detail and ground detail were all noticeably better than the original. They added a few new guns like the MP5 and the AK-47 both of which are fun to use. They did nerf the sniper rifle for some reason. It takes multiple shots to kill an enemy compared to it mainly being a one hit kill weapon in the original. You get to take control of Mona Sax for a few chapters which was a nice change. My only gripe about that was that while I was controlling her Max would not use any pain meds to heal damage even though he had some when I was last in control of him. Speaking of that one other part I didn’t like was that you have to keep an eye on Max and Vinny at different points in what are basically an escort mission where if they die it’s game over. Not my favorite type of mission for sure.

I played Max Payne 2 on Linux using Valve’s Proton. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs. The performance was fantastic, which was to be expected with the game’s age. Aside from one short dip to 82 FPS the game was always over 100 FPS. The game has 3 AA options; 3 AF options; and 15 other graphics options. You can manually save whenever you want and there are 10 slots for it. There are also 3 slots for auto saves which the game uses periodically if you prefer that. Alt-Tab works. You can choose from a variety of crosshair options. You can pause and skip cut scenes.

Game Engine: Renderware
Save System: Manual (at any time) and Auto
Settings Used: All Highest; 8x AA; AF; 1920x1080

Disk Space Used: 1590 MB
VRAM Usage: 714-851 MB
CPU Usage: 10-18 %
RAM Usage: 2.4-3.0 GB
Frame Rate: 82-144 FPS

Like the original, Max Payne 2 rates as an all time classic for me. It has a fantastic story which builds and improves upon the original. The characters are all worth caring about and fleshed out. The graphics got an overhaul. The voice acting remains superb. The music was wonderful. I finished the game on detective difficulty in 6 hours. That’s a tad shorter than the original but it in no way feels rushed. If you enjoy third person shooters at all or games with a strong story you owe it to yourself to try this out. I paid $2.55 CAD for the game on Steam as well as having bought the physical copy back in the day. This game is worth whatever they want to charge, well above the $10.99 CAD it currently retails for.

My Score: 9.5/10

Max Payne 2 is a third-person shooter from 2003 developed by Remedy and sequel to Max Payne (2001).
The game takes place 2 years after the events of the first game. You are Max Payne, reinstated after the events of the previous game, you reunites with Mona Sax, set out to resolve a conspiracy of death and betrayal.
Like in the first game Graphic novel panels are used as narration.
The Max Payne games are one of the best games from the early 2000s and Max Payne 1 was one of the first games to feature the bullet-time effect.
It is still fun to play nowadays, if you like classic third-person shooter games and can handle dated graphics you should try Max Payne 2 and its predecessor.

Sounds 6/10
Graphics 4/10
Gameplay 8/10
Atmosphere 9/10

There are no choices. Nothing but a straight line. The Illusion comes afterwards, when you ask 'Why me?' and 'What if?' A masterpiece of sequels. Remedy knows that he has upset the world of third-person shooters, expertly relaunches a second chapter containing another crazyly mature noir story, full of action and passion, keeping the solid gameplay of the previous one with a few extra treats. The first remains an unforgettable masterpiece but this sequel in my opinion surpasses it even if only a little. 9/10

Max Payne 2: The fall of Max Payne is the Max Payne game where he kisses a girl.

You play as Max Payne again, but this time his face is different and he looks uncomfortably real. Max has quit the DEA and joined with the homicide division. Its funny because he causes all the homicides.
Max finds himself answering a call to a disturbance in a warehouse which leads him down yet another dark branch of mystery and conspiracy across New York.
Also he shoots everyone.

Okay plot explained, game play time.

Its amazing what you can do in two years. Graphically, MP2 is a big improvement over MP1. Weird box people are game in favor of characters that actually look like people. There was also a big, BIG focus on rag dolls and physics this time around, making sure you notice all the boxes that get pushed over and the tables flipping with people falling into them.
Say goodbye to your 32mb graphics card, fucko.

Shooting feels a lot more natural and fun in MP2, with enemies reacting more to being shot by Maxy than in the last game, this mixed with the rather fun rag doll physics leads to really cool shoot outs where you send bodies flying in all directions.

There are some new weapons to use, with some being replaced from MP1. The Jackhammer is gone in favor of the Striker and now you have TWO assault rifles to play with, the M1 Carbine and the Kalashnikov. Throwables are now also a selectable tertiary, replacing your melee with the ability to use a Molotov to commit a war crime.

Max can still do bullet-time, because that’s why you bought the first one when you were eleven years old. You can either bullet time by dodging, or just turn it on and use it when you need it. While in the last game it helped you manage several enemies at the same time, Max is straight up just a super hero in MP2.

Not only is bulle-time even more useful, its actually pretty much mandatory in certain areas and difficulty. Max is capable of clearing out an entire room before his bullet casings even hit the ground in this game, considering the bad guys probably just see a middle-aged alcoholic moving at blinding-inhuman speeds before they die.
They must be being paid a lot, honestly, considering how many bodies Max stacks.

Unlike MP1, I didn’t really have to do anything to get MP2 working on my PC, except for a resolution patch so Max doesn’t look like a wide-boy.
Also, you get to see one boob with widescreen, just the one though.

Some people prefer the first game to the second, but I honestly see MP2 as a major improvement to MP1, in gameplay, graphics, and even story. The motion comic panels return for plot details, only now they don’t just put interns in costumes and tell them to pose.
Mona doesn’t look like she could be my sister anymore.

As cheesy and lame as Max Payne’s stories can get, the series is still a blast to play, and the gameplay makes up for any short-comings you could find with the series. I got one more to go, but you’re crazy if you think I’m paying 21 Canadian rainbow fun dollars for a game I’ve owned since 2012.

Barter with me, Rockstar.
Do it, you cowards.

Max Payne 2: The slip of Max Payne gets 9 renamed guns because of copyright laws out of 10.

The one of the best story based games I've ever played, definitely recommended.

Everything changed in Max's life; some false things became true, some true things became false for him. Max falls in love with a woman that comes from past. And in this way a crime - love story starts.

Love, pain, betrayal and death, everything happens in this game. But there's no pain left of the psychotic cases from the previous game like the baby's death, the wife's death.

* Movements are actually almost same as Max Payne but better than.
* Graphics are better according to Max Payne.
* Max's face is not same.
* Same way cinematics, but I think they are more effective in this game.
* The end of the game is changing according to difficulty. I won't give you spoiler but know that.
* There is not enough psychodramatical scenes (like Max's looking for the baby and hearing the sounds) according to Max Payne.

An excellent story is expecting you.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, if you notice the subtitle “a film noir love story”, you know what the story is about. Instead of the revenge story of the first game, the second game feels a bit lighter, I mean, who don’t like mysterious hot female killer lol. Even the Devs have put some funny stuff to light up the mood. But ultimately, as the name of the series suggests, it is meant to be sad and depressing. The game loosely follows the ending of the first game that Max Payne tries to recover from his previous tragedy, once again has been swallowed by sorrow. I am honestly quite touched by the ending. We all love happy endings, but it is imperfection that usually make a story beautiful and meaningful.

Speaking of the plot, it is in fact a bit genetic, but the script writers managed to make the story deep and beautiful, along with many well-written lines. The game mainly narrates in the form of comics as the first game to create a cinematic experience, with a few cutscenes as introductions. I am glad it did so because the technology at that time could not make cutscenes that are immersive and not awkward while using comics is much more elegant even in today. It also does a much better job than Max Payne 1, probably because the contents are easier to understand and the way the pictures played out is changed.

Bullet time today has become quite common, but back in the early 2000s I can imagine it was quite mind-blowing like the Matrix. Even in today the mechanic is quite solid but of course, it is not perfect. There are some issues like the aim is a tiny white dot that you often lose its track during fight or it is completely blocked by the character’s body. The control and aiming are wobbly, especially when using sniper rifle the aim wobbles severely. The game also has some level design issues, though are improved than the first game, you still might experience sudden death many times and have to go all over again unless you save the game whenever you can. On the positive side, the game is around 6 hours and shorter than the first one to avoid being repetitive as near the end of the first game. Overall, I don’t think it is fair to do more nitpicking to an old game due to and this game should be considered to age quite well.

This game is specially for nostalgic players and those who want to take a look at the noir story.

Max Payne 2 is Max Payne 1 on steroids, with bigger budget and improved mechanics. The game still holds up till this today and the unique story-telling through graphic panel is unique in video games

Max Payne's journey into the night continues in Max Payne 2. Set several years after the first game, Max's name has been cleared, and he's returned to his job as a detective in the NYPD. However, good things don't last; after meeting again with Mona Sax, the femme fatale he thought dead, things take a dark turn and once again he finds himself fighting the criminal underworld of New York.

The story keeps the great film-noir style of its predecessor, including the graphic novel cutscenes that further the plot. I found the story really good, as it continues exploring Max's attempts to deal with his own personal hell, over the guilt he feels for the death of his wife and baby, and the conflicted feelings that appear when he meets Mona again.

The gameplay is just as it was in the first game; a third person shooter with a fantastic bullet time mechanic. I must say I found the Bullet Time to be more forgiving in this game, as it seems to recharge faster, and Shootdodge doesn't seem to spend the Bullet Time charge. While the game feels fairly easy at the start, as it progresses, enemies get tougher, and start appearing in larger number. However, you can find a few allies through the game, though they might not last much; besides Mona, who'll join you for a good portion of the game, and is a pretty nice shot.

The overall aesthetic and level design is pretty good for a game from the early 2000s. It seems to be running in the same engine as the original game, but character models and such are fairly upgraded. Don't expect nothing spectacular, as, again, it's an early 2000s game we're talking about, but it's pleasant to look at. The soundtrack is also very good, and I found the short TV shows you can watch during the game to be amusing, even if they were pretty much radio shows with still images; just some fun details that add life to the world.

Personally, I had a lot of fun with this game. It remains challenging, but not to the point of becoming too punishing, which is something that slightly annoyed me from the first game. I can easily recommend it.

I was quite happy just to boot up this game and have it working without installing fixes thankfully, so whilst the first technically aged like Milk, everything about this aged like fine wine. The writing is still great, the gameplay is as fun as ever, the sound is good, the characters are memorable and Max got the true ending he deserved.

I can't believe this game is from 2003, it's so fun for a game this old. The gritty noir story, ragdoll physics, great dialogue and gunplay are what make this game. It's honestly one of my favorite games, besides max payne 3.

A classic , the graphics and the gameplay were great for 2003.
Out of the trilogy , this is my most favorite one.
It's one of those nostalgic games that you keep wanting to go back to every few years and fortunately it runs well on the modern systems haha.
Personally this game brings so much memories back for me and i love all those slow motion kills , extremely satisfying.
Good story as well.
If you haven't played this game you're either too young or you're new to gaming , highly recommend it.

If someone were to ask me if I were a fan of Max Payne, I'd say yes. Now that I think about it, I'm a fairly unconventional fan of Max Payne. I say that because until today, the only Max Payne game I ever played was the first one. It was the only MP game I had ever played, but it made a huge impression on me.

When I was 10 or 11, it was one of the few games a friend and I constantly played whenever I went over to his house. Seeing as how he owned a PS2 and I didn't, I tried to be there as often as possible. Back then (2001/2002) it was difficult to own a wide variety of games, so what you did own, you kept playing, even if you had already beaten it numerous times. Honestly, we didn't care about that at all. Max Payne was a great game and even if the story most likely went over our heads when we were that age, we still kept at it. Eventually, I was somehow able to get MP 1 for my PC, but since my PC wasn't a powerhouse, the game was practically unplayable. From what I remember, it ran at single digit FPS, but I was still able to manage getting through a great deal of the game.

I don't exactly remember when I bought MP 2 for PC, but I'm sure it was around 5 years ago. For some reason, I wasn't able to start up this game at all. Maybe it's because this game wasn't made with modern PCs in mind, but no matter how many times I installed it, deleted it, and reinstalled it, it wouldn't start up at all. I could've just bought a PS2 copy on eBay or emulated it, but I figured I'd eventually get around to playing it. Since I already had enough games in my backlog and even if MP 1 meant a lot to me, I wasn't in a rush to start playing it.

After quite some time, I decided to reinstall it and give it another try. Recently I've been trying to get through as much of my backlog as possible, so I've been trying out games that are less than 10 hours long and MP 2 fits into that category. I'm really not sure what I expected to get out of this game, but all I knew was that MP 1 was a great game, so chances were it'd be the same for MP 2. Having just finished playing it, I'd say that MP 2 is good, but not great. MP 2 is more of what MP 1 delivered, but it still felt like an underwhelming sequel. Don't get me wrong, this game isn't horrible, but I expected much more than what I got.

By this point you should already know what to expect from a MP game, chaotic gunfights with bullet time added to make things more interesting. Despite that being the case, I rarely used bullet time throughout my playthrough. I knew it was there ready to use, but I got through the game fairly easily without feeling the need to use it. If anything, using the jump that's really close to activating bullet time was much more useful. It wasn't exactly the same as turning on bullet time, but it was close enough and it was helpful when it came to cautiously wanting to go around corners, scope an area out, or just ensuring that you'd be safer using it rather than just walking around in real time.

The few times that I did use bullet time, it didn't feel the same as it did when I played through MP 1. Chances are that MP 1's bullet time is the same, but in that game, it felt much more useful than it does in MP 2. Being that bullet time can be considered this game/franchise's special feature, you'd expect it to be practically mandatory, but you can easily get through this game without ever really activating it. Maybe it's more necessary when you're playing this game at higher difficulty levels, but I'm not really sure about that and I don't feel the need to replay this game to find that out.

Besides bullet time not being as useful as it was in MP 1, I frequently found myself getting annoyed due to constantly being interrupted by cutscenes. Don't get me wrong, the graphic novel panels look great and they're a large part of what makes this game neo noir, but it was incredibly annoying how often these cutscenes would start up. It's not as if they were lengthy, much like some of the cutscenes found in MGS games, but it was still annoying constantly being interrupted by them.

In MP 1 I never felt bothered by long cutscenes and I feel that it would've been more appropriate to have these cutscenes only occur during the start/ending of a new chapter, or not having so many of them spread out over the entire game. It really bothered me because at times it felt as if I was experiencing an interactive movie rather than a video game. I understand that's one of the qualities to be expected in MP games, but it felt as if there was an imbalance when it came to actual gameplay versus watching cutscenes. It's possible that some people will prefer that, but to me, MP is all about the gunfights. A better balance of cutscenes and gameplay would've made this a much more enjoyable game.

It's really not that big of a deal, but I thought it was strange that they changed Max Payne's appearance. Chances are it's because they were better able to utilize the PS2's visual capabilities by the time that this game was being made/released, but having gotten used to Max Payne's signature sneer from MP 1, it was a bit disappointing that this game didn't feature that. There were some instances during the cutscenes in which the original actor from MP 1 was present, but it comes off as if they used more than one person to depict Max Payne both in the cutscenes and the gameplay itself.

Overall, MP 2 isn't a terrible game. I wouldn't say it's as iconic as MP 1, but it's still worth playing, even if just to know what's up before you play MP 3. When it comes to recommending this game, I'd say I do, but only if you're really into the MP franchise as a whole. If you’re not a big MP fan, I’d say you could be fine with reading a summary of the game or watching a let’s play of it on YouTube.
