En Avant! Napoleon: Total War (NTW) ist der sechste Teil der rundenbasierten Strategieserie Total War mit echtzeitbasierten Taktikschlachten der 2010 erschien. Technisch wurde NTW wie bereits der Vorgänger Empire: Total War auf der 32-bit Warscape-Engine entwickelt. Zeitlich ist NTW vor dem Hintergrund des Aufstiegs Frankreichs zur europäischen Hegemonialmacht unter Napoleon Bonaparte, der Zeit der Koalitionskriege angesiedelt. Verschiedene spielbare Fraktionen stehen zur Verfügung & richten sich nach den Kriegsschauplätzen, also den zur Verfügung stehenden & abgeschlossenen Kampagnen. Die drei Kampagnen in NTW umfassen Napoleons Italienfeldzug, den Ägyptenfeldzug & einen großen Europafeldzug. Die Feldzüge spielen in der Zeit der Koalitionskriege von 1792 bis 1815. Zusätzlich spielt das Tutorial in der Zeit der französischen Revolution & behandelt den Aufstieg Napoleons Bonaparte.
Die NTW-Definitive-Edition enthält neben der Standard-Version vier NTW-Erweiterungen (DLC). Die DLC enthalten neben vielen weiteren verschiedenen Einheiten die Peninsular-Kampagne, die als Schwerpunkt den spanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg behandelt.
Grafisch ist NTW trotz des Alters gut aufgestellt. Die jüngeren Titel aus der Total War-Reihe wirken zwar technisch moderner & in der Bedienung freundlicher. Aber wie bereits beim Vorgänger Empire: Total War ist auch NTW in der Komplexität & historischen Genauigkeit sehr lobenswert aufgestellt.
Wer Interesse an einer wichtigen Epoche der Geschichte hat, dem sei NTW ans Herz gelegt. NTW im Sale erwerben & Strategie-Enthusiasten & Total War-Fans haben alles richtig gemacht.

Ich finde Napoleon Total War ist eine akkurate Simulation der Napoleonischen Ära.
Ich kann dieses Spiel wirklich jedem Liebhaber empfehlen.
Jedoch regulären Spielern könnte dieser Teil ein wenig Probleme bereiten, da er wie Empire etwas andere ist.
Trotzdem bin ich sehr Zufrieden mit diesem Teil.

Für mich ist Napoleon Total War aus der CA-Serie eines der besten Titel. Für mich vlt. sogar mein Lieblings-Setting. Ich habe fast alle Spiele dieser Serie gespielt, seit Shogun 1, ME, Rome, Rome II, ME II, Shogun 2 und diverse Add Ons. Und das, obwohl Napoleon TW bereits 10 Jahre alt ist.

Warum? Vlt. weil ich auf diese Epoche stehe ? Möglicherweise. Aber kein einziges TW fesselte mich so lange und so häufig wie Napoleon TW. Keines habe ich häufiger installiert. Dies liegt an der meines Erachtens wirklich spürbaren Diplomatie-Funktion, und der ebenso, rein mein Gefühl, gut ausbalancierten Gegner-KI, sowohl auf der Strategie/Taktik-Karte, als auch auf dem Schlachtfeld. Ich spiele meistens die Preußen oder die Engländer, ganz selten die Russen. Das Startsetting der Franzosen fesselt mich einfach nicht, für meinen Geschmack zu einfach, da zu stark, aber so war es einfach damals um 1805.

Aber wenn Du aus der schwächeren Position heraus musst, schon am Start in der Defensive bist, quasi vor dem geschichtlichen und damals politischen Hintergrund, welcher im Spiel ständig spürbar ist und einigermaßen authentisch dargestellt wird, dann muss man bei NTW schon recht ordentlich ackern und vor allem den Überblick über alle Stellschrauben bewahren. Das fordert Dich als Spieler, macht aber, wenn Du ein Fan dieser Reihe bist, richtig Fun.

Man muss die Politik und die Züge der anderen (auch Verbündeten) mehr überblicken als bei anderen TW-Titeln, Ministerien richtig bzw. passend besetzen, den Handel justieren, die Häfen ausbauen, die Routen freihalten, fiese Entscheidungen in punkto der Bündnisse richtig treffen, Konsequenzen beachten, wen brauchst Du die kommenden Jahre mehr, wen weniger. Was erforscht Du jetzt, was morgen (Technologie-Baum-Prinzip), in „was“ investierst Du Deine ständig limitierte Kohle, welches Land eroberst Du jetzt, morgen, übermorgen, welche Provinz tauscht Du sogar für eine andere mit einem Verbündeten ein, wann ist ein Protektorat besser als das pure Einverleiben der Provinz.

Die Franzosen, sofern Dein Gegner, setzen Dich in einer Tour unter Druck. Jede ungesicherte Lücke Deiner Grenzen wird ausgenutzt, wann immer möglich versuchen Gegner in Deinem Rücken aufzutauchen, Dich vom Grenzland ins Landesinnere (in Dein eigenes !) zu locken, damit Du die Verfolgung mit Deinen Truppen aufnimmst, damit eine größere Kluft an der Landesgrenze entsteht. Du musst aber mitziehen, denn Raubzüge des Gegners sind teilweise extrem teuer. Ständig herrscht Druck und Anspannung. Und zack...brennt es an anderer Stelle.

Auf dem Schlachtfeld sind zumindest die Franzosen beinhart. Klar, die KI marschiert drauf los, greift Dich an, und sobald Du den Bogen raus hast wirst Du die Gefechte irgendwann auch gewinnen. Sicher ist dies allerdings nie, da viele Gegner ihre Kavallerie hin und wieder geschickt einsetzen, unberechenbar Dich an einer Stelle überraschen, welche Du nur für einen kurzen Moment außer Acht gelassen hast. Sobald Du angreifst, sieht die Sache wieder anders aus. Dann zählt jeder Hügel, jede Geländesenke, jedes Wäldchen, einfach alles auf der taktischen Schlachtkarte. Warum ? Da Du dann der Initiativ-Part bist und der Gegner abwartet. Deine Artillerie und deren Wirkungskreis im Verbund mit Deinen Fußtruppen will dann einfach sorgsam überdacht werden, vorher. Diese vor der eigentlichen Schlacht ablaufenden Artillerie-Gefechte, nicht selten über das gesamte Gelände hinweg, je nach Kaliber, sind oft schon ein Vorgeschmack darauf, was anschließend im Truppenkampf passiert bzw. passieren könnte. Der entsprechende Einsatz Deiner diversen Truppenteile (Infanterie-Diversität), finde ich, kommt in keinem anderen TW-Titel derart zur Geltung wie hier zur Zeit der Napoleonischen Kriege. Brutal, echt, taktisch ein absoluter Leckerbissen. Immer wieder muss etwas geopfert werden, damit Du etwas anderes erreichen kannst. Es gibt einfach nichts und wieder nichts im NTW für Umme. Es kam nicht selten vor, dass ich eine Schlacht mit den letzten 30 Mann (von anfangs 1.300), und am seidenen Faden hängend, dann doch noch irgendwie für mich entschied, einfach durch einen letzten guten Zug direkt „im“ Gefecht, quasi als letzter Ausweg, um doch nicht als Verlierer vom Feld zu gehen.

Es ist das Jahr 2021 und ich spiele es gerade wieder. Installiert und los geht’s ????.

Als letztes Contra gilt es noch zu sagen, dass das Spiel immer noch teil-verbugt ist. Es läuft stabil. Aber es sind ein paar diverse kleine völlig idiotische Bugs drinnen, die man sicherlich zur Zeit des Verkaufs hätte beheben können. Aber CA war noch nie, auch nicht Anfang der 2000er als sie begannen, bekannt für einen außerordentlich sehenswerten Spieler-Support. Insofern, ich lebe damit.

Also man könnte sagen ich habe dieses, sogenannte spiel schon das ein oder andere, mal gezockt und bin doch ziemlich positive überrascht. Besitze es nun schon seit 10 Jahren und ich dachte jetzt wäre mal der richtige Zeitpunkt für meine lang ersehnte Review. Nun da ich so am Tippen bin dachte ich mir man könnte sich ja heute auf einen Sonntag noch einen entspannten gediegenen Jay gönn.

Wie eigentlich alle Spiele der Total War-Reihe ist auch Total War: Napoleon ein sehr gutes Spiel und ohne Einschränkungen weiter zu empfehlen. Besonders der Kampf mit Kanonen und Musketen auf Entfernung bietet eine neue taktische Herausforderung.
Allerdings würde ich mir trotzdem vor den Kauf gut überlegen, ob ihr euch nicht lieber Empire Total War kauft, da das im Prinzip den gleichen Content liefert aber vom Umfang bedeutend größer ist. Zum Bsp. bietet Empire mehr Fraktionen, die ganze Welt als Karte und mehr Forschungsmöglichkeiten als Napoleon.

Only real complaint/suggestion is that historical unit tactics being enforced would be useful. For example, the French attacked in column; light troops could form square, so being elite troops, limiting how many could be recruited rather than removing abilities would be a better idea. Love this game.

Total War: Napoleon is essentially a much smaller scale stand-alone version of Total War: Empire but with better technical stability and game balance.

Napoleon features multiple campaigns to take part in. Starting with Napoleon's campaigns, we follow Napoleon on his campaigns in Italy, Egypt and finally in Europe. There is also a campaign of the Coalition, where the player can choose from a rather limited set of nations (Austria, Great Britain, Prussia and Russia) to fight against the French. The Peninsular Campaign takes place on a zoomed in version of the Spanish Peninsular, again with a limited set of nations (Spain, Great Britain or France) but with some unique considerations for this particular campaign that makes it worth playing through.

Due to the limited nations available to play and with the smaller strategic map it is fair to say replay-ability is not as high when compared to Total War: Empire. It is worth noting that there are various fan-made modifications for Napoleon and a few of them do help with replay-ability by unlocking the ability to play as other nations or even by changing the setting entirely.

Napoleon iterates and improves almost every aspect of the game-play in comparison to Total War: Empire. Napoleon introduces the concept of attrition due to negative effects such as desert/winter. The campaign and battle AI for Napoleon sucks a little less but still relies on significant cheats to be a challenge. Some of the issues with game stability were improved. There is a little bit of extra Quality of Life changes such as units in your own territory can replenish over time instead of needing to manually replenish at the cost of gold. The multiplayer campaign beta which never got released for Empire is here in Napoleon, offering the ability for 2 players to play a campaign game together in multiplayer. There is a lot more positive minor changes but listing every change would be a bit much.

It's far from being a perfect game. Despite the various improvements it still inherits some of the negative aspects of Total War: Empire (bugs/instability and especially the bad AI come to mind). The Total War series has certainly come a long way since the release of Napoleon in 2010 (as of now that's almost 12 years ago). Yet it still holds up as a fun game. The graphics have aged well in my opinion as-well as the Audio (although there are some annoying audio glitches in the game engine which make it clip and beep sometimes).

Overall I would recommend this game if it has a good discount from the base-price or in a cheap bundle.

Ahh Napoleon Total War, great mustaches and the old guard destroying everything. No better combo to make my day better.

When younger I never got much into Napoleon, growing up Julius Caesar was always my favorite general/emperor. That all changed when I first played this game and was blown away by the opening trailer and title theme and discovered my own family history.

I remember when I first played as Russia and conquered the whole map. Without NATO to stop me it wasn’t so hard.

My fourth time great grandfather fought in Napoleon’s Grande Armée. He was 20 when he survived the Russian invasion and retreat. He also fought at the battles of Leipzig and Waterloo. He was captured by the Prussians at Waterloo so I think he might’ve been in Grouchy’s 30,000 who were sent to pursue the Prussians to prevent then from consolidating with Wellington and the British, and spent 6 months at a POW camp in Danzig. Since he was an ethnic German from Alsace Lorraine I would bet that he was a translator between the German speaking Prussians and his French comrades. If I ever have a son, his middle name will be Nikolaus in his honor. So you can understand why I love this game so much.

I wish so badly they would make another Empire or Napoleon. The grandness, the scope, it could be so good with a fresh new set of game mechanics and everything modernity has to offer.

Although if they’d make Napoleon TW now, Napoleon would probably be a single hero unit wielding two giant blunderbusses so who knows.

Am I as great a commander as Napoleon? Are you? Only time will tell. Try a campaign and find out.

This is a great expac for E:TW. All jokes aside, if you liked Empire, you'll probably kinda like this, but also be a little disappointed. It can be summed up as a dumbed down, nicer looking, and smoother running Empire. The biggest things hampering it are the rather unimpressive technological development, the lack of any meaningful need for navies, and the fact that the map is smaller, and that you have fewer factions to play as, and that the campaigns are often quite linear and have you racing the clock in such a way that you're not really gonna have time to get the most out of said campaign.

fire game. Recently, I got into researching the Napoleonic wars, and also read a biography about the man himself. And let me tell you, this game is IMMERSIVE. Sure, it might not be the best total war out there, but it for sure gets the job done. Very cool that they got Napoleon's actual field marshals in the game. Awesome experience, solid 8.5/10.

This game is absolutely incredible and the mods just make it absolutely better. You really feel like you're commanding an actual army and the satisfaction of winning a long, difficult battle is just amazing.

It is a dated game, which I hope is remastered soon, but despite that it is still relevant and worthy of playing.

OK Let's talk about Napoleon TW. Fantastic game, a very interesting era full of heroes and gentlemen.The soundtrack is amazing and really captivates the feeling.Land,siege and naval battles are really nice.The musket fire,the cannons roar,bayonet charges ,fifers doing their thing (wtf man you go to war with a fife xD) Great campaigns with Napoleon and in general his whole story arc. I would for sure reccomend this to anyone interest in this era ( EMPIRE TW too is amazing ) and you can find the game in an extremely reasonable and low prices.What this game lacks are the following and it truly would be a masterpiece if it had some these. More complex siege mechanics (trenches,being able to build mines towards your enemies fort,defences for both the attacker and defender) sort of a siege escalation mechanic.NO general speeches before combat! (why CA why u do dis ) Lack of variaton in terms of marching music. These are some of my thoughts on the game.As i mentioned before it a very solid game and you will have tons of fun playing it.Be sure to get DARTH MOD you will LOVE it even more then.The makers of the mod added stuff that CA should have done and please CA and SEGA what makes the TW series the greatest strategy games to exist are their features. Little things that make differences ,we need immersion,we need cinematics ,we need animations ,we need marching music (one unit that will only play music on the battlefield and wont take space in you 20 unit stack ) we need blood ,we need the brutality of the war. Every TW player knows that with the right inspiration and dedication the TW can achieve greatness and an unparallel immersion in the era it is placed. Bring this to us and we will pay for it. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY NEED !
Also a personal request xD Give us greeks the chance to play the Hellenic Revolution with greek voice actors etc etc !
Have fun my fellow TW companions and always give constructive criticism to our favorite strategy.Be harsh where it needs and be thankfull where it must!

Well well, what can I say? This review might be a bit biased because this is the game that made me get into PC gaming almost 10 years ago. Back then I was playing on my crappy family laptop and now I play it (admittedly, sparingly) on my own tower. NTW is a classic Total War game and I consider it and Shogun 2 to be the LAST 2 real MASTERPIECES of creative assembly. By 'classic' total war, I mean a game where maneuvering units takes time (and therefore requires planning), battles don't end up in moshpits that end in less than 10 minutes, and there are no single-entity units. I also think the morale system in this installment of TW is the best it has ever been. I never played much campaign and preferred online battles, although I have slowly been getting into all the various campaigns. As others have pointed out, it's the same the world map as Empire but focuses only on Europe sadly. Anyways, this game nails the Napoleonic era. If you are a fan of this historical period, THIS is the definitive game for it.

Great Game

It really captures the Napoleonic era, and I often find myself immersed in this dynamic time period. The uniforms and soldiers are very well-made, and the maps are quite accurate and test your adaptiveness as a general. The highlight of the game for me are the battles, especially the online ones. I would definitely recommend this game to any enthusiast of the Napoleonic era.

This is a great game no matter who you play. It is well suited for multiplayer, of single player alike. It is a lot like the real situation during the period; England must rely on controlling trade routes at sea for money and France must keep expanding on land or collapse until the weight of paying for it's own military. Plus the chances of France actually controlling the seas are non-existent, not to mention it has to fight Germany, Russia, Austria and England. I taught history and Napoleon is actually one of my heroes lol so I am admittedly biased but the game is great fun and challenging.

this is my favorite total war game i replayed it like 10 times already . The combat is fun, combat music could be better but its ok . i hate that there is no priests in the game because when you take territory some are not your religion and i cant change that so the people are less happy because of religious unrest

Positives about Napoleon: Total War
- Greatly Improves upon the AI at which Empire: Total War failed.
- Graphics which still hold up to date for a 11 year old game
- Quality of life UI for battles
- Immersive Campaigns
- Great Battle map designs

Negatives about Napoleon: Total War
- Copy/Paste units for Russians, Prussians, and British (mainly light infantry, and light cavalry)
- Doesn't expand on the minor faction's units; bland
- Naval battles are generic (however given this is the second time they implemented naval battles I would be more lenient )

Overall this game is amazing, I've played it for 168 hours because of the addicting Grand Campaign and Custom battles. Each faction has it's own unique unit whether it would be with artillery or line infantry. I am upset however, because the map shrank from it's more expanded counterpart in Empire. (Personal opinion: I believe that this game should have been an expansion/improvement on Empire and not it's own game). Lastly, the game gets better late game with improvements in Technology. I don't know what else to say than to recommend you this game.

Really good game, even after 12 years and on a low end pc the game performs well and looks absolutely stunning. The main problem is the amount of content the game has, which is only a few major powers and a few campaigns. Multiplayer in this game is the best, as melee infantry cavalry and much more can be utilized. The game overall is 8/10, but with mods like NTW3 and Darthmod it becomes probably the best game in my opinion in all respects. ????????

This is my favourite Total War game and one of my favourite strategy games of all time. I have spent countless hours playing this game back in my school days. I still remember installing it from the CD and skipping past games for windows to finally load up the game for the first time. This game will always be held in high regard for me however having returned to it now after so long, the game's age is clearly visible. While the graphics are not terrible, they do show their age especially as modern PCs/laptops might encounter random bugs. The biggest offenders in this regard are certainly the unit/character animations. The soundtrack remains enjoyable and does hold up really well. Overall the AI is not as good as the more recent Total War titles and the unit balancing is askew. I will still recommend this game, but am doing so hoping you understand that this is a pretty old game and it does have it's issues the newer Total War titles don't have.

- This is basically an expansion for TW: Empire. It plays completely the same. Land and naval battles both.

- It concentrates purely on Napoleon's wars. You will get two campaigns in detailed Italy and Egypt, whre you can only play as France and Europe campaing. Where you can sadly play only as France, after you beat the Egypt cmpgn. and the coalition nations. The map is more detailed, yet there are some illogical decisions made with the cities. Like Moscow being the capital of Russia, while at that time it was still St. Petersburg. Or Budapest being the centre of Hungary, while Presburg is not even on the map.

- Some things were improved, like the fact that you no longer have to manually replenish units after battle. They will automatically replenish as long as you are in owned or allied territory. Yet some things were taken out, like religion (no converting or monk agents) or fort building. You can only build forts in towns now. Also towns no longer need population to emerge. As soon as you have enough money to build something, you can. I think it makes sense, since the game takes place after TWE, where you raise all those towns.

- Religion mechanic and and fort building kind of return in the Peninsular campaign, which also offers playable Spain.

The whole game has great atmosphere that beatifully captures the period. And it has amazing background music for the campaigns.

Man, where do I start with this masterpiece? I was 12 years old in 2014 and had just seen 1970 ‘Waterloo’ with Christopher Plummer and was reeling from the sheer scale of epicness of Napoleonic warfare, I desperately wanted to know and see more of the period.
Then I found a series called ‘total war’ on the internet and was really impressed (bare in mind this was 2014/13 and I hadn’t really ever seen a PC game before) I found NTW eventually and saved £20 to convince my mum to buy it for me on ‘Steam’ whatever the hell that was, I waited for like a solid week for it to install because my internet was so bad but then it finally finished, I clicked play and was greeted for the first of hundreds of times by the iconic ‘my enemies are many, my equals are none’ 12 year old me was convulsing due to overdose of epicness at this point, then I saw the menu.
‘Pffft who cares about this campaign wtf does that mean anyway?’ I clicked custom battle, got steamrolled by the ai because I literally would spend hours looking at the bayonet animation. The first 200 hours (a whole summer) I spent playing as Britain pretending to be Wellington and fighting ai France on ‘Italian Grassland’ and ‘Galician Rea’ in the ‘peninsular’ I turned into a real nerd, buying all the books I could about the Napoleonic British troops, spending all my money on miniature lead redcoats and later French for them to kill.
Then I found out about the ‘Peninsular campaign ‘ dlc, through the epic trailer on YouTube, well in short, another 2 solid years liberating Spain, (not very well as it took me ages to teach myself how to play campaign) I renamed all the generic foot regiments to the ones from the books I read and the ‘Sharpe’ series, spent ages researching names of all of Nelson’s ships, making the Trafalgar Fleet to destroy the poor French yet again. I skipped revising for my GCSES to defend Gibraltar from hoards of glitchy French militia, you get the picture.
Fast foreword a couple of years, I hear about the NTW3 mod, and so aged 18, I am once again playing my tenth Peninsula Campaign, at the same time as preparing myself for joining the army next year (entirely inspired by this absolute masterpiece) Best game ever created in the History of the world (fact)

Best Total Game ever. I only wished they revamped it for 2021 and Empire because, as soon as you install mod's like Darthmod or NTW3 (Btw enhance the game significantly) the game begins to decombust, because it can't run armies of about 8 youthousand or more, and it's not becauser computers slow. It's just because the game can't run it. But a 2021 remake, enhancing the graphics, systems and more playable nations would definately be a huge improvement as well as a remodeling of the UI. I totally recommend this game, for anyone who wants a accurate depiction of the Napoleonic Wars, and mods (If your on PC) would improve your experience.

Unlike the newer total wars, it isnt a feat of 'I bought praetorians so I will never lose' or 'send your hero or general out to dance while your archer spam kills 3000 men in 10 mins.' This is actually very fun and enjoyable with friends, you can have a legit battle, and strategy is involved rather than clumping 3000 men in an unbreakable pike formation at the corner of the map. A good healthy roster of cavalry, artillery and infantry makes battles legitimately less gamey and more enjoyable with friends and even harder ai

If you want a total war game with gunpowder units (Set in history, or atleast the CA approximation for gameplay and other concerns) napolean is your bet. Compared to empire. Still bitter about empire (on launch atleast.) Anyways, i actually kind of found the more narrative take on the franchise refreshing with this one. It should be pretty cheap these days and mods are a blast for it. Go for it. Or don't, im not the king of france or whatever.

This game is rather unique, in the Total War series, since it's content is all based around Napoleon's biography.

From the story-driven tutorial onward, you are playing Napoleon and command his troops throughout the game, which is divided into 'Chapters'. You will make your way from Egypt to Russia and play all the key campaigns and battles of Napoleon's real world wars.

It's structure makes this Total War game very accessible to new Total War players. It has all the turn-based and (naval/land) real time tactical battles of other TW games, but the story is guiding you through all the content in digestible chunks, instead of dropping you into a 'big campaign' and leaving you alone with it all.

Highly recommend it to new TW players.

Amazing game with an amazing modding community... I would strongly recommend getting some mods. NTW3, LME4 or darthmod are amazing overhauls. And these mods allow you to play as all nations.

The game is great by itself but it becomes a masterpiece when combined with mods.

Napoleon is one of the greatest Total Wars ever released by Creative assembly. The mixture of geopolitics, technology, tactics, strategy, and units (mostly for multiplayer and modded campaigns) is easily one of the most replayable total war games to exist alongside Rome II, Shogun II, and Empire. If you have a friend who is interested in the Napoleonic Wars, I highly recommend doing multiplayer campaigns against one another (Co-Op detracts from the game). Fighting against players is the most rewarding experience for a game like this simply because of the context of the era. Being a good commander works! and it is rewarding. Strategic blunders, economic hardships, rebellions, and defeats can all be non existent in this total war. That is the glory of it. Be swift, be cunning, be imaginative! Europe is at the hands of one of the would be greatest conquerors! You!

I've just started playing this game and so far I am fairly happy with it. I should warn you that you'll need a pretty hefty computer to run it due to the graphical demands. This curve ball aside, the game is a masterpiece.

So, what's all the fuss about? Where to begin?

For fans of Empire Total War like me the anticipation of Empire was too much, but the product was panned by hundreds of loyal fans and I steered clear of it. NAPOLEON: Total War was given more praise and my real reason for purchasing it was, a) I love this period and b) naval combat. I've become a bit of a nerd for the love 18th and 19th century fighting ships and the chance to wield one of these beasts in combat was all too alluring. If you understand naval combat of the period, the game doesn't disappoint, although true sailors might be frustrated a little by a lack of data on hand. But, that does fit the era of seamanship in this period and reinforces the skill level of the captains and admirals in charge.

Graphically, the sea battles are fantastic. The ships lumber towards each other and you have options to fire broad-sides or different types of shot to cripple ships and or board the enemy. The distortion effects from cannon fire are particularly impressive. Bits of wood and splinters fly off the vessels and sails are shot away leaving you languishing for control. I managed to Dis-mast an enemy recently, which was cool to watch.

Now, I must stress I've only had a few hours of game play and am still getting to grips with land battles and the ins and outs of naval combat, but my early impressions have been positive.

The first thing you notice is the campaign map which is just freaking awesome. I love the reduced time component, so that each turn is two weeks which provides a feeling of more control over events. The campaign map's color scheme changes more subtly to suit the change in seasons and late autumn early winter is breathtaking.

The complexity of the build and research trees have changed a little and you can set what technologies you want to research with the help of the self-spawning gentlemen who pop up. You also have more control over your government and can sack ministers, recruit generals and admirals, and thus have more input into the structure and composition of your society.

I'm still mucking about with the English right now, again, because of their inherent sea power in this era, so there is much to explore yet.

If there is a fly in the ointment, it's the odd crashes I have experienced. Sometimes during turns, sometimes mid battle. The cause is a mystery and could be my system, but I get the black screen, which is better than the blue screen of death. Aside from this hassle, I really love it and make sure i save it more regularly...I've not had this experience with Empire Total War, alas alack. Still, in terms of the total experience, in terms of government, settlement experience etc, and battles, the game provides a riveting experience and hopefully hours of game play which fans of the franchise should enjoy...

Story's nothing special; just your Mary Sue/Gary Sue protagonist from humble beginnings and his rise to power. There's a running gag that the guy is short, but honestly it's exaggerated and played more for humor than anything.

A few story arcs stand out, such as the guy's love affair with artillery to the point where his entire army is just Howitzers and 8-lb Foot artillery. The filler arc with the hot air balloon was freaking hilarious, especially when it kept getting deployed in the middle of the battlefields. Personally, I found the Russian Winter Attrition arc a bit overrated. There's nothing wrong with it but this story has been told several times over. For that alone I prefer the Egyptian arc more, even if it's essentially the same but hot deserts instead of snow. The Spanish story arc is curious since the protagonist never actually appears but at least he's acknowledged often. As for the Waterloo finale... man, that canon ending is heartbreaking.

All in all, it's pretty great and incredibly underrated, if a bit short. It's quite the shame it gets buried under the higher profile series like Rome and Medieval.

Pros- Its a good game I guess

There are many features I would like to see, however it's a 10 year old game that I spent many a day and night playing. This game brought so many memories and I pray we'll see an ETW2 or NTW2

Great game for online play and campaign play. The multiple campaigns stretches the European countries during the Napoleonic era. The most important nations are playable. You can play a campaign with 2 people or singleplayer. If you are really into campaign play there are good free mods available where more nations are included and playable.

Online battles are the reason i keep playing this game for 6 years. Strategic deployment and fast micromanagement makes the difference in online battles, where you can enjoy intense 4v4 battles. Teamplay is very important and you keep learning new skills. All the nations have different qualities to use. Nice and many multiplayer maps, battle music and special effects. The online community is funny and helpfull and keeps very active, its still no problem to find a quick match. Big difference with Empire Total War: morale of your troops and your general is very important, and you have unique napoleonic units.

Many hours of joy from this game. I know it's dumb, but this game has helped me through some rough times. Something I don't usually hear praise for is the soundtrack. I think the soundtrack really helps set the mood for the game. Good stuff all around.

Napoleon is a more refined Empire, focusing on the Napoleonic wars with unique units. Great campaign, made better with DarthMod and other overhaul mods.

+ Prematurely unifying the Prussians always a fun challenge especially when the whole world turns against you.
+ Refined combat, with the role of artillery becoming relevant as it should.
+ Somewhat competent AI on higher difficulties.
+ Napoleon's Campaigns are excellent introductions to the time period. Historical Battles are also great additions to the time period. Reliving Waterloo as the British was a nice experience.
- Unit variety is worse than Empire, especially in naval units.

Very good, the combat and strategy are difficult to master since, unlike other games it is not a rock-paper-scissor 'tactics' instead it is all about positioning; skirmishing with light infantry and skirmishers, bombarding elite enemy forces with artillery, gunning down enemy cavalry with mounted rifles, using light cavalry to take down undefended artillery or skirmishers out of position, heavy cavalry to take dong stronger units and so on. The forces in the game work together to weaken the enemy instead of single units countering each other. The game may take time to learn and you probably need a guide if you're starting out like, mass charging infantry is usually a bad idea (unless you're Russia) instead, when there is a weakness in the enemy formation charge a few units to break those and flank the rest of the enemy. Overall, the game is mainly about positioning (as it should for the time period). The main downside is that the AI is sometimes a bit dumb and may end up being easy to dispatch even in very hard in which the AI has some decent buffs. The AI isn't completely oblivious but it isn't brilliant either. The strategy part of the campain is pretty good even if it isn't the most flushed out. However the main downside is the AI being just decent or bad. In a 1 on 1 war it does pretty well but when you have allies that take months to start mobilizing it can be a bit frustrating. Now if you try to backstab on an ally in a war things can get ugly. First, that nation will probably focus its units on you despite being in a war. Secondly, the nation you were at war with before may just ignore your former ally's undefended land and naval invade you with a massive army (this is from experience).

Overall, the game functions nicely and despite the AI being quirky at times it does it's job and makes for fun and interesting campains.

I am Napoleon I need cannons for my bunghole.

A little old and clunky, Total War has been a lot worse and little better than this. Good tactical gameplay a good amount of detail has been put into historical accuracy of units. Campaign map focusing on towns and cities is good and there's a nice nod towards the military necessity of industrialisation upsetting the populace.

Clunks: Deploying people behind walls and into buildings is a good idea which is implemented very badly and fighting in streets is generally a nightmare. Cannon can be deployed with a tiny hill right in front of them that you couldn't see preventing them from hitting anything (and they cannot alter trajectory up.) Cavalry run into opponents' deployed spikes preferentially and when chasing enemies down in a rout. Ranged cavalry stay in melee and all die if one horse gets caught even when skirmishing (which happens a lot.)

Naval clunks: Somehow ships can turn on a tuppenny without any wind in their sails (especially weird with square-rigged ships of the line.) The square of the battle map means you can get ships caught in a corner and unable to turn (when graphically surrounded by open sea.) You cannot rolling fire into a ship's stern as you pass it. When you press the broadside button for the first time you do not get a ranging shot but unleash your broadside straight into the water (therefore it is best to press before engaging.)

In addition I hope your favourite features of total war are your reinforcing armies taking detours through enemy territory and the grand army being stopped from crossing a bridge by an allied unit of militia for the entire campaign, because they are very much present in this game.
