Good Old Wild West

Überhaupt agieren die unterschiedlichen Gegnertypen in Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood stets selbstständig.

Wanted: Dead or Alive

Alles in allem 9/10

GRAPHICS - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
Graphic is good. The world with his western style looks really nice while stiff Face-Animations and Details popping up downgrading the experience.
But it sure looks good enough to be enjoyable.

MUSIC - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Really gorgeous western typed Orchestral Soundtrack.
I don't remember a special song but I was really hyped and pumped at some songs. It really fits the atmosphere.

STORY - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
A Tale of 2 Brothers searching for Aztec Gold while contend for the love of a wife. Full of masculinity, badass One-Liner, Gunslinger and Insults. It's a very entertaining Western-Story which is very entertaining and in some moments just silly & amusing. For an Ego-Shooters it's a very engaging story.

GAMEPLAY - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Bound in Blood is an ''Corridor-Shooter''. The Levels are very linear and it's kind of Slow-Paced. You'll need to dodge behind Objects and use the ''Cover-Shooting-Mechanic'' which allows you to attack and defend yourself at the same time. It takes getting used to but makes a lot of fun when you got the hang out of it. Also choosing one of two brothers with different abilities (Shotgun or Rifle, TNT or Lasso?) is a very nice addition. In conclusion it's not the finest shooter gameplay but got enough to make it stand-out.
(And the Gunslinger-Showdowns are really cool!)

WORTH BUYING - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Yes! When you like Western-Storys, Ego-Shooter, John Marston or Clint Eastwood you should take a look at ''Call of Juarez - Bound in Blood''.
Maybe it's not the most polished game but I sure had a lot of fun!

While it's an old game, it's still fun. Some great gunfight settings in Wild West township settings. Gameplay is pretty clunky at times, though, and the regular 1 on 1 duels are annoying. Best to check out the many tips on YouTube for these. In porting the game from console, it's seems the optimisation for PC failed in these duels. As the game is just a couple of quid now, it's worth a shot (pun intended).

They took the first Call of Juarez, removed the stupid parts like fistfights or stealth, and focused on the shooting. And I like it! The story is surprisingly good – a well-written prequel. There are some stupid decisions, like spoiling the ending right at the start, but the shooting is the primary focus anyway.

The only thing I despise is the westers-style duels. They are too fast for me, and I died on almost every duel like 15 times until I racked up the sensitivity to max before every duel. When you click the shoot, a crosshair comes from the bottom right between your opponents' legs, and since you need to start shooting as fast as possible, you always end up shooting them in the d*ck. I find that hilarious.

This game has aged very poorly.

Pros:
- Surprisingly decent story
- Good graphics for late 2000s
- Immersive setting

Cons:
- Really bad FOV, with no option to change it
- Clunky movement
- Underwhelming gun mechanics
- Duels are a real let down

You are better off playing CoJ: Gunslinger, a much better executed game.

Good story that is badly executed. Annoying start and end of the game. Rest of it is allright and it is a Western FPS (pretty rare thing). So overall it is allright, worth my time and three bucks I got it for.

Such a classic game back in my childhood and sadly forgotten because this game is really fucking good and the story and characters are amazing too...Bound in Blood is a Prequel to the first Call of Juarez game so anyone can hop in to this game and not need to worry about past events since after Bound in Blood the first Call of Juarez will pick up...what I like was the OST and it was the same guy who did the OST for The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 and the menu theme to me is iconic and for the gameplay it may be dated and feels off at times it's still enjoyable but the gun duels aren't great since it is super dated for today and gotta have the best reaction time or you can be stuck in those battles for 10 minutes like I did...the story is all about family, lust and gold with some decent twists and turns not gonna say much to avoid spoilers...if you like Red Dead games you will love this game and the series.

Although this game has a decent single player campaign as well, the real reason I bought it - and a copy of it for my friends - is the multiplayer mode with its really cool maps and game modes. You must try it - all you need is a VPN client to get it working and see your locally hosted multiplayer servers. (Tip for my fellow gamer bros: Tried it with ZeroTier or Tailscale too, but until now Hamachi was the only one which worked.)

Yesterday, we were a family.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is a Western-themed first-person shooter and prequel to Call of Juarez, chronicling the adventures of the McCall brothers in the wake of the American Civil War. Its gameplay is significantly more action-oriented, with greatly decreased instances of clunky stealth and platforming.

I think all that practice is starting to pay off!

One of the first things to be noticed about the presentation is a permanent coffee filter. Coming around the time when the artistic direction trend was “more brown, more real,” hues of orange and blue are accentuated, while greens and reds are muddled. I suppose it’s intended to emulate an antique film of some kind. A bit of a shame, since the visuals are largely improved over its predecessor, despite running only on DirectX 9: textures now have much-needed, if exaggerated depth and wrinkles, and animation across the board approaches what one would expect from human beings. Facial animations still remain mediocre at best, and several visual effects such as screen-shake and blur are highly intrusive sometimes.

I recommend forcing v-sync on via external means, as the game doesn’t have the option natively. Its field of view is also quite narrow, requiring external modification to change. I’ve encountered one errant crash in the middle of a loading screen, halfway through the game, but other than that it ran smoothly and with no hitches or stuttering on my Ryzen 9 3900X, 64GB RAM, 1070 Ti, Windows 10 Pro system, at 1440p 60hz.

Production quality has seen an increase on the musical front too. An awesome guitar and strings leitmotif is present throughout most of the tracks, which now also present improved progression and transition. For sound effects, a majority are lifted from the predecessor, which already had a sweet soundbank. And lastly, dialog and voice mixing were improved modestly: the playable characters are the highlight, but the antagonists and side characters have less convincing delivery of their lines.

After the war, we’ll come back here, and this’ll be our home again.

August, 1864. On the tail end of the American Civil War, Ray and Thomas McCall defect from the Confederacy, defying direct orders from their superiors, and attempt to save their homestead. They arrive too late to keep it from falling apart, but thankfully rescue William, their youngest brother and a trainee preacher. The trio thus drift throughout the southern United States’ border towns, promising to themselves that they will rebuild their home. Drawn to the allure of love and riches, the brothers’ relationships become strained and slowly turns hostile. They also get involved in a subplot of Native-Americans, preparing to go to war with the outside world, and at the same time offering the key to acquire the accursed Gold of Juarez. Highly intriguing on the merits of the McCall trio, and despite William being far too self-righteous for his own good, this is a story that deserves to be experienced.

-They’re not too good with their guns, are they?
-Nope, but they’re damn good at dying.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood ramps up the action from the word “go” in every conceivable fashion, while smoothing out many of the less positively received elements of the first installment. Combat and movement are faster and more responsive, though I do miss the weapons firing projectiles instead of hitscan. Enemy combat maneuvers and reactions see a welcome increase in variety, even if their AI is mostly limited to rushing the player with little regard for cover. And speaking of that, a unique dynamic cover system is introduced, allowing players to progressively expose themselves without explicitly sticking to objects or terrain. Usually it works well, though it might result in you seemingly anchored to a crate or pole and spinning around it into enemy fire; this can be turned off in favor of standard strafing to and from cover, if desired.

Ray and Thomas, the playable brothers, each have specific perks to their gameplay. Ray is the tough gunslinger: wearing a brass cuirass to deflect half of incoming gunfire, he can dual-wield and proficiently reload revolvers, throw and use dynamite to blow up enemy clusters, and even lug around the awesome yet impractical gatling gun. On the other hand, Thomas is the agile sharpshooter, with improved rifle handling, a set of throwing knives, a lasso for climbing to higher places, and the option to use a lethal bow. Both feel great to play as, with the added benefit that each brother sometimes provides a different experience throughout the levels.

-Nice trick. When did you have time to practice?
-While you were getting old.

The differences between playable characters extend to their Concentration Modes. Thomas automatically snaps to targets and shoots them dead while fanning his revolver, while Ray sweeps a crosshair over enemies to paint reticules – his flavour being a little less practical. Concentration Mode needs to be charged up by scoring kills… but once fully charged, the player only has a minute to engage it before the charge is lost and needs to be built up again. It means you seldom get to use it on more than three enemies at a time; in all my playtime, I got exactly three proper shootouts where five or six dudes lined up to be brought down.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2695186246
Ditching the slightly obtuse weapon degradation of yore, this installment has a much more straightforward weapon progression. You start with rusty, slow-firing and slow-loading firearms. Enemies you shoot dead drop sums of money, which go towards purchasing higher grade guns at various vendors. That these guns have sweet silver or gold finishes is just a bonus.

The quintessential duels return. Their format is much more cinematic, but everything about their gameplay suffers. While strafing to keep the opponent in view, you must continuously move your mouse to control the hand, keeping it close to your holster without reaching early for it, lest your character resets its position. Easy way to miss the signal and get popped.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2693594030
For the most part, levels are linear corridor-like affairs. Some give only the illusion of a larger world – deviating from the path will fail you unceremoniously. A couple of them really are larger worlds, massive yet mostly barren sandboxes with the option to engage in quests for cash.

-You talk too much.
-Yeah, well, you talk too little…

Cooperation with your AI controlled buddies is encouraged; they’re competent and may even save your behind on multiple occasions… which begs the question of why there is no actual Co-Op play in this title. It might be since some chapters force a character choice, but it’s still a huge missed opportunity.

A first playthrough may take between six to eight hours to complete. Every level has a set of collectible scrolls hidden around; these unlock cool artwork and funny commentary from the protagonists. It’s worthwhile to replay the game as each brother and explore their different dialog, gameplay styles and routes.

My faith is my shield.

A significant improvement over the predecessor, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood offers a riveting western story, memorable characters and excellent gunslinging action. Shame about the poor duels.

Hey brother
There's an endless road to rediscover
Hey sister
Know that water's sweet but blood is thicker
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do

Do you still believe in one another?
Hey sister
Do you still believe in love? I wonder
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do
What if I'm far from home?
Oh brother, I will hear you call
What if I lose it all?
Oh sister, I will help you out
Oh, if the sky comes falling down
For you
There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do

The game is good. But a little bit outdated. Shot control are also not really good. And your brother is not really waiting for you, he kill everything if you take your time to explore. That mean, most of the time, you arrive when the party is finish. And the secret are not really well made.

Played Call of Juarez Bound in Blood after played Call of Juarez Gunslinger. Still a fun game with ok graphics. DX10 is fine with everything set to high still now. Different style of graphics to cell shaded Gunslinger graphics. Also tried original Call of Juarez that is dated now. Not just in graphics but in gameplay too. Fine at the time but doesn't play well now. Kind of like the difference between Witcher > Witcher 2 > Witcher 3. Witcher 2 is still ok and Witcher 3 is great but Witcher graphics and gameplay are far behind Witcher 2 and 3. Same with this too.

Positive points:
+ Good story
+ Many of cutscenes are interesting
+ Acceptable variety of weapons
+ Has 2 playable characters: Ray and Thomas (my favorite character)
+ Each character has their own weapon and ability:
for example. Ray is good at using pistols and can use dynamite.
Thomas is a master of rifles and can use bows and throwing knives.
+ You can select a character before the start of each season
+ The secrets are located in different parts of the seasons, and the game, by finding them, gives you information about the story and sometimes the real pictures of the US Army at that time, which is interesting.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cons:
- Duplicate environments
- Low variety of enemies
- Bosses in duels do not have a special feature and they are all the same

------------------------------------------
my score for this game: 6/10
If you like games with fast Gameplay like Call of Duty, this game is not for you.
But if you games with Western theme and you have no problem with the negative points of the game. You will definitely enjoy it .

TEST : Call of Juarez : Bound in Blood

Conclusion :

Prix d’achat : 2.49€ (Call of Juarez : Bound in Blood – 25/11/2018)

YANOGA REVIEW

LENGTH : ~7 Hours for Story

BUGS : Minor

PRICE : Paid 3€

DIFFICULTY : Medium

81 / 100

▶️Introduction

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is a first-person shooter set in a western set in the year 1864. It is the successor of Call of Juarez, yet it still is the first game narratively. It offers both single and multiplayer.

Pros ???? and Cons ????

????Positive aspects ????Negative aspects
Decent visuals for its age. Online is dead and there is actually no way of making it work.
Runs on Low-End devices. The game is a little bit too easy.
Lots of playstyles are explored in this game.
Memorable characters.

This review contains no spoilers.

Remember when it was Ray McCall before John Marston? Old times…

????Gameplay

This certainly is an FPS game, but it is not one of the traditional Run & Gun games. This one truly is a corridor-shooter. The norm “corridor-shooter” is meant for slow paced shooters that play within narrow, or enclosed linear levels.

The shooting mechanics are plain iffy and weird at first. Aiming is slow but overly accurate, shifting your crosshair and shooting all together is a bad thing to do because your accuracy will suffer by doing that. The best way to approach this is by using the cover system, which helps a lot with faster aiming while being protected during the same time. Some unbalanced mechanics are the following ones: While playing with Ray and using his Dual-Revolver mode. You get free Aim-Assist which is just absurd for a game that focuses on precise aiming. The other broken ability is Thomas version of super draw, which allows you to press the fire button as many times as possible, while Thomas auto aims for headshots.

https://youtu.be/Rz3wFtSgpuE

Speaking of super draw, this is the ultimate ability that both characters have. How do you unlock this ability? It is very uncomplicated! The more you kill with headshots, the faster the revolver cylinder fills up. When the cylinder is loaded, the super draw will be available for use! Other than the different ultimate masteries, you will get different passive skills. Ray is pretty much a heavy build, he is a lot more difficult to kill due to his superior armour, but he still can use Dynamite and Dual-Revolvers, on the other hand, Thomas is a much more precise shooter. That is obvious as he uses snipers, and while targeting he can zoom in a lot more. He is a lot more agile & stealthy as well, which allows you to climb over obstacles using your lasso. He got access to a bow and knives, although I am unsure if stealth is an effective way of playing in this title.

As mentioned, the maps are pretty narrow, excluding the mission levels where you get the chance to ride a horse on an open world type of setting, and not much exploration is available to the player. The little expedition that someone can do is through locating money bags and some secret maps or documents hidden in some areas inside of chests. You can use other random weapons that are sometimes available around the maps, for example, the Gatling gun, chairs, lamps, and water buckets, yes!

????Story

It's a pretty straightforward story, to be honest. It is the usual clash between comrades and brothers in one or another way, and foreseeing certain events that are going to happen is easy. Still, it was a pretty entertaining western story with all the badass cliches and macho characters. All of the characters were surprisingly memorable, as I still do remember all of them and their stories after four months of not playing Bound in Blood. Overall I would give the story a thumbs up!

????Graphics / Audio

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood uses Techland’s Chrome Engine 4.

  • Graphics
  • The game was released back in 2009, which means that visuals can't be photorealistic.
The characters do look cartoony by now. Some muddy textures and wonky animations show the age too in cutscenes. The lighting, and the first-person view, make the game look a lot newer than it is. That is a rare phenomenon, as cutscenes look better than in-game moments usually. The map design is simplistic yet good enough at the same time as it matches the setting and story just fine.

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2484837969

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2463483233

  • Audio / Soundtrack
  • Gun sounds are the usual ones. You do not feel any punch while shooting a gun which is a bummer. Environmental sounds are pretty and surprisingly detailed as I was able to distinguish every sound and its location. The voice acting isn’t the best. The voices do sound clear yet the ambience is just missing which makes the voice lines sound pretty staged and not in the supposed western environment.

The soundtrack consists of some Country, and Rock musical loops, which is always a plus!
⚙️Performance

    In Game

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, 32GB Ram, Nvidia RTX 2070S:

  • I was running the game on Maxed out settings at 1080p at around 200fps.

  • In detail

  • Average framerate:214.1 FPS

    Minimum framerate: 95.8 FPS

    Maximum framerate:362.4 FPS

  • Bugs / Glitches / Crashes
  • In 11 hours of trying to shoot these damn cowboys, I experienced no bugs, glitches or crashes at all. Be sure to write your password down after creating your log-in account because issues will occur.
⚖️Conclusion

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood was the Red Dead Redemption before Red Dead Redemption! It was the main triple-A western game back in the early and late 2000s! The game still offers a decent story for 7 hours, with memorable characters, solid visuals, and amazing performance! I definetely recommend this game, even at full price.

Call of juarez: Bound in Blood a great fps game although having a campaign of 6-7 hrs the game feels really awesome and you easily get attached with the character in the game. Well this game is also based on the wild-west and it tells us the story of 3 brothers. This game teaches us that the path of peace and truth leads to a great and peaceful life rather than living the path of blood and lust. That's all this game is really great l suggest all fps lover to play this game anyways before starting Red dead redemption 2 l thought l should get familiar with wild west and also with the life of a outlaw so l gave a shot to this game. And it really crossed the limit of my expectation.

First of all, this game is better than firs one in every single way possible. Second, it is one of the best first person shooters, with outstanding story. Overall, this game is very very good. But there is few game-breaking bugs witch are old as the game itself. Developers never did anything to fix them. It is a roulette witch one of the bugs you will face. A damn shame, for such a good game.

In this sequel to the 2007 gem Call of Juarez, we get to play as the (in)famous McCall brothers Ray and Thomas, each with their own set of skills, specialties, and paths taken throughout the story (which don't diverge by much, but hey - let's not nitpick here). Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood improves upon the original game in every way imaginable: there are multiple playstyles (2 completely different approaches to gun-fighting), better graphics, better animations, smoother movement, killer soundtrack & sound, and an epic story that serves as a prequel to the original.

There are also plenty of secrets to discover that are not just tongue-in-cheek wanted posters featuring devs/testers, but art pieces (with friendly banter between the McCall prothers, adding to their relationship) as well as archive photos from the Civil War, which made me look reeealllyy hard to find most of them during my playthrough and enriched my overall experience for it.

If you want to experience the game that was hailed as the king of Wild West before Red Dead Redemption came and shoot its head clean off, then look no furtrher than Bound in Blood.

Second game in a series, story wise it's a prequel to Call of Juarez. Game follows the same formula as its predecessor with refined and improved gameplay. Can recommend it if you like the first game or old westerns.

    Pros:
    - Decent visuals;
    - Two playable characters with different strengths and weaknesses;
    - Wild West setting;
    - Fun gunplay;
    - Good voice acting and soundtrack;
    - Great (but a little bit cliche) story;
    - Cool arsenal;
    - Memorable characters;

    Cons:
    - Short campaign;
    - No co-op;
    - Some visual bugs;

Compared to the first game, Bound in Blood benefits from its new focus on action. There's still a share of janky mechanics, online is dead, the partner AI can softlock progress, the dueling controls suck, and the nauseatingly narrow field of view requires mods to be tolerable. Outside of that, it's a reasonably competent mid-budget shooter of a type that is rare to see today, in a setting that video games still don't explore enough. I still prefer Gunslinger though.

This would be such an overwhelmingly great game if it wasn't for it's only flaw: THE TOTALLY MESSED UP CONTROLS IN DUELING... The majority of the game you feel like a total BADA$$ and get sucked in by the overall atmosphere, only to feel like a little Chicken Sh!t when it comes down to dueling... When it is time to draw your gun in a duel, you’d better have half a meter of spare place around your mouse and no valuables around that you could knock down, or else prepare to die and lose a lot in dueling which can be pretty frustrating, because it cannot be fixed by adjusting your mouse sensivity ingame... Clearly this game was made for consoles and the duels play much better with a controller... But nevertheless I still think that this is a damn good game which you should totally pickup, at least when it is on sale, if you like the western setting even the slightest little bit... 8 out of 10!

Well lets say how its is
Gameplay from Call of Juarez is much better.
    They upgraded their engine drasticly.
The story of Three Brothers McCall that were mentioned in the 1st game. How Ray becamed badass preacher.
But how he was diffrent at his younger times.
story telling in shooter is rare thing
it goes at 8 out of 10 for me
i dropped 2 points for bugs
some bugs are very game breaking
if you leave the game you will be forced to restart the last chapter from scrach or you will get a broken duel where you will always loose.

This game is really fun I started off this series as a kid, continued it later in life, and it still gives me the same feeling as when I played it before. The story is worth getting in to, and I was grateful to finally be able to figure parts out of it in the other games. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants an FPS western shooter.

This game is decent but problematic.
The biggest problem is the story, or lack of interactivity with it rather. Since the game is completely linear (almost a on rails shooter) with cutscenes between you can imagine that since the developers probably needs the game to be a certain length and they are unable to give open world or interactive elements what do they do?
Fill it with a astonishing amount of boring long drawn out segments with miles of filler and padding in the form of billions of henchmen of course.

Also the gunfights where you and a opponent draw against each other is among the worst bulls*th this game has to offer. Who in their right mind would find this entertaining or even tolerable. The mechanic is awful and unresponsive.

This game has some quite nice moments but they are obscured by hours of repeated fighting against thousands of cloned enemies. So I would not recommend this game.

So I'm playing this series backwards by accident. I bought Gunslinger first and had a blast. I decided I wanted to see what the rest of the series was, and while I love old games, the original call of juarez looked a little to clunky and I heard this was a prequel so I played it instead. The gameplay is fantastic, and while not as good looking or fun as Gunslinger, it is still one of the best western games ever. In addition, as a lover of the western genre as a whole, I really enjoyed the story, which while simple and sometimes cartoonish, I still really enjoyed and connected with. I am now going to play the original because I have to find out what happens after this in the story. Amazing game, would recommend to anyone with functioning eyes a brain, and electricity.

It's pretty racist, pretty sexist, and pretty crap. The writing's awful, like it was written by a room full of guys who never had any siblings. The shooting is clunky at best, and the graphics - even for a game over a decade old - are ugly as sin.

0/5 stars. I got it in a bundle with Assassin's Creed and still feel like I wasted my money.

Call of Juarez 2 improves on every aspect of its predecessor. Gone are the hard to predict stealth and hard to control platforming levels. Graphics are improved. Environments and scenery is much improved. Voice acting is superb. The overall narrative aspects are just an overall great effort. Perfectly captures the feel of many western movies.

The gameplay premise has been slightly tweaked for the better. You still have two different characters you're able to play but the game lets you choose instead of forcing you to play both. Whereas in CoJ 1, one was forced to navigate the awfulness of Billy missions, CoJ 2 lets you play as either one of the brothers, each having different styles of play.

A tale of brothers, pining for the same girl and of course, having 2 completely different play styles. It honestly was one of the best western cowboy slinging games I've played. The game plays off in a western setting, fighting outlaws and indjuns, chasing the girl, heisting, doing train robberies and the amount of explosions, gun play and gun slinging skills make this game an absolute gem. Highly recommend this game as it really had put in a lot of effort in the gameplay, mechanics and the story made it absolutely intriguing. The tale is about trust, betrayal, redemption and revenge. Who doesn't love a good ol' western shootout? AMAZING game!!

After the highly enjoyable first game in the series, I was VERY disappointed in this entry. We go from the open story-telling of the first game to some very on rails action which largely (not entirely, but mostly) revolves around set pieces that give you very little room for deviation from not only where you have to go, but also how you have to go about doing it. This is made all the more noticeable when some of the levels from the final half of the game return to the more open expanses, giving you different ways to approach a situation and a choice of regions to explore.

There is almost no point in having the stealth weapons of knife and bow, because the enemy ends up on red alert almost immediately, and nine times out of ten there is no way to sneak into a situation anyway because of how the levels and objectives/set-pieces are designed.

There are SO many great scenes where the story and the environments are clicking on all cylinders and then you'll get thrust right back into some on rails action sequence, where if you try to go too far away from another character to explore another way of solving the problem via a back path or some such, the game enters a fail-state and makes you restart the mission.

And the worst, the absolute WORST are the duels. Now, in the first Call of Juarez, the duels were annoying, no doubt, but here not only are they worse in terms of the pickiness and timing required to succeed, they are damn near ubiquitous with almost every single chapter and almost every single side mission in the two open world levels ending in a bloody duel. And even following the tricks and methods discussed in the fora and online, it will sometimes still take nine or ten or more (sometimes many more....) attempts before you will finally shoot your opponent before he perforates you. Sometimes you are doing everything right (or so you think) and you will get shot a dozen times and then on the thirteenth attempt (even though you're doing the exact same things as previously) you just get lucky and heave a breath of relief that you can continue on with the game.

I'll be honest, I didn't 100% finish the game; I got up to the final duel with Barnsby, and after 14 or 15 attempts I just went online and watched the two or three minutes of cut-scene that play after you kill him so I could at least see how the game had ended.

The music is what you'd expect from a gritty western, and while it won't blow you away, it's still decent. The graphics are dated, but still pretty good, and the scenery/environments can be beautiful when you're actually given the opportunity to explore the vistas of the southwest. The dialogue and voice acting is....well, it's adequate, and its never out and out bad, but it does get pretty cliche from time to time. And ultimately the action and gameplay when you're not being railroaded is damned fun indeed.

But there is just so much choice taken away from the player in terms of actions and approaches and level design and for so many chapters of the game too, and then to put the rancid cherry on the faecal sundae, virtually very chapter grinds to a halt for a tooth-grindingly frustrating, game-flow destroying duel.

The game is just so incredibly disappointing after the pleasure of playing the first one.

    Not recommended.

You play as two cowboy brothers who are on the run from the law until you come across a prostitute. You then spend the remainder of the game arguing about who gets sloppy seconds once her actual boyfriend kicks the bucket. The loser of the fight gets blue balled and the winner gets to father someone else's child. Fun game, get it on sale

Played through the first level and it seems like more of the first game which is good. The problem is there's no FOV slider and the default FOV is incredibly low to the point where it makes me sick so I couldn't continue. There appears to be a mod to fix this but I couldn't get it to work and it would crash my game. I'm writing this review as a warning. The game itself plays fine but there's not much in the way of options to the point where I couldn't get very far into the game.

There is not much to say about this game. It's a shooter in the wild west with some fun levels (given it's year of release) and some horrible, frustating mechanics. I enjoyed CoJ Gunslinger for what it was, but the quality of this one unfortunately does not get near.

But given the humor between the two brothers it can be quite fun sometimes. Get it on a sale (like 85% to 90% sale, nothing less!).

An absolute gem of a game.
This game has aged remarkably well, especially compared to the first game, which is not a game I would recommend playing unless you really want the story.

Graphics, while technologically dated, still look pretty decent.

The gunplay feels good and has a nice variety of weapons. The game has a really innovative cover mechanic, allowing for intuitive peeking around and over objects. Cover system can be seen in action here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4EQFGd-Wq4
I'm very surprised I haven't seen that system being adopted in other games.
The only black mark on gameplay is the duels, which are horrible with keyboard and mouse controls.

The story is a surprising highlight; a classic story of greed, lust and redemption.

All-round great game, I highly recommend it.

☑ Beautiful (For a 2009 game, the graphics holds up very well)
    ☐ Average
    ☐ Outdated

    Gameplay

    ☐ Very Fun
☑ Average (Though fun at times, it lacks what the 1st had to offer)
    ☐ Repetitive

    Audio

    ☐ Average
☑ Repetitive (The music is pretty mediocre, 1st COJ had better)

    Difficulty

    ☐ Very Hard
    ☑ Average (You auto-heal too quickly, it's not a challenge until end-game)
    ☐ Too Easy

    Story

    ☐ Amazing
☑ Average (it's less atmospheric over COJ 1, more set-pieces though)
    ☐ Low quality

    Bugs

    ☐ None
☑ A Couple (Heat haze is very buggy around asset edges)
    ☐ Gamebreaking Bugs

    Pros

+ Upgraded Graphics engine over the original COJ
+ Cinematics are quite nice, together with character designs.
+ Good selection of classic revolvers, rifles and other weapons of the time.
+ First person body render returns from the original, details matter.
    + 21:9 fully supported, very surprising for a 2009 title, Hud + Cut-scenes.
+ Some open world sections, offering side quests, in between linear chapters.

    Cons

    - Loss of gritty scruffy style gameplay from the original.
    - Difficulty seems far easier and mainstream.
    - Objectives are more clear over the original. i preferred the lack of exact markers of the original.
    - Running Animation feels off.
    - Voice Audio is of poor quality, sounds even more dated than the previous entry from 2005.
    - Game locks your vision to face people that are talking to you taking away control from the player, highly annoying.
    - Concentration mode is more like dead-eye, a linear step down from the original slow motion which played better.
    - Health auto-Regens, this is far too easy over the first game, which required the player pick up elixers.
    - The game feels like it can't decide whether it wants to be open world or linear. A little confusing.

    Summery

Call Of Juarez Bound In Blood is a prequel to the first game, which then had a little bit of information explained as well.
First of all, the graphics engine has been upgraded, and still looks passable for a game from 2009, to this day.
As for the gameplay, unfortunately it has lost it's charm from that of the 1st game, which i think they nailed.
(That rustic, shabby and otherwise gritty gunplay which worked wonders to set the atmosphere).
Bound in blood, definitely has that pre-2013 gunplay fps vibe to it. The generic action/set piece shooter of the time.
While not neseserrily bad at the time, it doesn't bode well by modern standard, as it's been done to death.

-Realism Mod Comes recommended --> https://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-juarez-bound-in-blood-realism-mod

Overall, it does quite a few good things over the original, but in the process of modernising and becoming more open to the console market, some of the mechanics specifically PC, loses that classic charm found only in the
original. As long as you expect a console port going in, I can still comes recommended it, as COJ bound in blood still has fun moments. Sale recommended.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood - it is incredible first-person action game. with high-quality shootouts, nice graphics and an incredible story. This is probably the best part in the series for me. Yes, this is a corridor shooter, with boring shootouts closer to the end, but if you are patient and immerse yourself in the plot, then this game will leave only positive emotions after passing.

This part tells about the McCall brothers: William, Ray and Thomas. About their difficult adventure and equally difficult choices. During the passage of the game, the player will be given the choice of a character: Ray or Thomas. Each character has his own abilities and his own charisma. William acts as a non-playable character. who tells the whole story.

This game is undoubtedly one of the best in its genre: shootouts, taverns, shriffs, duels are all very nicely implemented here. There is a fairly large selection of weapons of that time: shotguns, long-range rifles, revolvers, bows, machine guns and more.

Of course, in this game I would also like to have a cooperative, this would add life to the game, but the developers decided not to add it.

Many players liked this game not for its graphics or gameplay, but for its very touching and soulful story. Although it cannot be said that the game has bad audio or graphics. At the expense of bugs, I can say that there are a minimum of them, and even if they appear, they will not cause any discomfort.

    11/10 spirits of gray coyote.

Bound In Blood serves as a prequel to the original Call of Juarez which uses an updated version of the Chrome engine and is lovely to play. This time around you're not alone - there are two controllable protagonists who always fight side by side against whatever foes come their way. It's a nice change of both pace and setting, and I think more characters meant they had a chance to develop the story from a few different angles which yielded an amazing result. As the brothers go on their adventures, the strong brothership has to endure difficult challenges and the way their gradually shifting virtues and personalities are displayed speaks lengths about how greed and lust can ruin a person. It's a serious storyline that contains quite a few great twists, plus it also explains or adds to many events which happened during the first installment.

The gameplay itself felt great - depending on whether you play as Ray or Thomas, you can do different things and use different weapons. Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood introduced a new satisfying mechanic called 'team entry' (I think), where you blast through the door together and pop some heads in slow motion. The duels are also somehow easier to pull off, and I thank for that since there were so many of them that I sometimes wondered why they didn't just put those duel-bound angry hombres down from the start, especially since they pretty much all asked for it. Must be some kinda outlaw honor or something.

All in all, if Call of Juarez 1 appealed to you, this will too. Even if you didn't like Call of Juarez 1, Bound In Blood is a different beast which should play and feel a lot nicer and more polished. Give it a go sometime.

8.5/10 At least from my memories of this game I can say it has a story worth telling and game play that remains enjoyable throughout the entirety of your time, but unfortunately I never was able to fix the inversion glitch on PC when I was interested in replaying this. So from my time with it on the 360 I can say it's worthwhile if you can get it working properly, but I'll have to not recommend it it on the whole for what was a less than impressive game-breaking glitch.

I really enjoyed the first game. I liked both the playable characters, they weren't perfect people, but at the end of the day, neither of them were awful people. And it had, by the end of the game, one of the most emotional and tear-jerking things I've ever experienced in games. It was a speech by Ray during one of the final loading screens.
The emotional gut punch of him saying why he is who he is, actually got me to cry.

This game not only undercuts that gut punch, it mocks it. What should be a quiet moment, is interrupted by a boss fight, with a character who should have already been dead.

Words honestly cannot describe how much I hate how the ending was handled. It should have been somber. William shouldn't have made it seem like he was going to shoot Ray. It should have come off as an honest mistake on Ray's part. A tragic, sad mistake.

I wish I'd never played this, and not spoiled the memory of that speech from the first game.

Well before I say anything else it's important to remember that the online for this game really doesn't work anymore so please don't buy it for that. Yeah some people have had luck with GameRanger and other things but it'll never be the same as it was.

Looking at this game's single player, I can recommend it as a buy. The game lets you choose between the two brothers in almost every mission, so there's something in there for those that like to get all up close and personal with Ray or who like to take a slower and more long range approach with Thomas. Generally the graphics have held up reasonably well too and the game has a surprisingly diverse range of environments that you will find yourself in across its 15 chapters. It also has a very unique art style in how the game draws the various cutscenes... there's a roughness to the whole graphical presentation really so I highly recommend this for fans of the western style.

The characters can seem pretty one dimensional at times, with some fairly cheesy story elements, but honestly I think it's a good campaign and a game that you're going to want to continue playing. The shooting mechanics are quite slick and the concentration mode can save you from some really dastardly moments. This game took me about 7.5 hours to complete on 'Hard' difficulty and I died a fair few times on some chapters, so take that as a yardstick for how long this game is.

The duels are also something that is quite nice and mastering them requires a different skill to mastering the very fast paced gunplay of the main game. Additionally there are some chapters which provide a bit more of a free roam experience, allowing you to complete extra missions for money which you can use to buy upgraded guns. This game is usually cheap, so why not go out and buy it? However, buy it for the single player because you're not getting a multiplayer experience from this one anymore. I would say it was worth buying for the single player alone as I really did enjoy it.

Flawed? For sure. But if you can look past this games age than there's a really fun western shooter hidden underneath a multitude of issues. Personally I loved the gun choices and the ability to swap between the characters, both of which had their unique quirks that made them worth playing.

In a market deprived of good westerns, for 10 dollars this one keeps me satisfied! 7/10

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood serves as a prequel to the first Call of Juarez game. This game tells the backstory of the three McCall brothers before they settled down - from the Civil War, through to their activities as outlaws/bounty hunters. It does a good job of filling in some of the blanks and answering questions,

For the majority of the levels, you can choose between either Ray McCall, or his brother Thomas. Their strengths and weaknesses are similar to the first game, i.e. Ray is the pistol man and demolition expert, and Thomas is better with rifles and is more agile, able to pull himself up and make jumps which his brother is not able to do. By and large, it makes little difference which you choose: it is largely personal preference based on your playstyle (although I did find the strong aim assist on Ray's duel wielded pistols to be very strong indeed).

The biggest change for me was the removal of the weapon durability - in the first game, if you picked up a rusty variant, you would not get much use out of it before the gun broke and you would need to find a new one. That feature, which I found to be unique and interesting, has been removed from this game; now, you still get different quality weapons (rusty, superb, etc), but they no longer break - the differences now are down to stats such as power, reload speed, etc. I personally wish they had made durability one of those stats, but overall I can understand the tradeoff, even if I do not like it all that much.

While I do not think it is as good as its predecessor, it is nonetheless an enjoyable journey. If you enjoyed the first game and/or the setting, you should have a good time with this.

Played on Windows 10 Pro x64 without any issues.

A good B-tier western-style arcade game, COJ: Bound in Blood will keep you entertained with its story. In all honestly though, it's not really worth playing through more than once. The combat takes some getting used to, but overall, it's aged pretty well. The characters are interesting and their development is an underrated element to the story. However, the level design feels a little repetitive at times, and the dueling system feels a little flawed, which is unfortunate considering how many duels there are in the game. Not sure if it was a result of my mouse sensitivity or my settings, but it felt like the camera would bounce all over the place. And the later levels have some serious lag issues, which can cause the experience to be a little ruined. All in all, though, this is a solid game. It's a nice addition if you're a fan of the series or western-style arcade games.

Bound in Blood is the prequel of the first Call of Juarez, talking about the youth time story of one of the protagonists of the first game. Similar to the first one, the game has duel characters who have different unique skills. With improvements on gameplay and mechanics, the game still does pretty well in narratives as before, largely extending the character established in the first Call of Juarez as a nice supplement, but it doesn’t require knowing previous story. In the FPS genre, there is no game like Bound in Blood that offers both great FPS experience and a good old Wild West story, hence my recommendation.

Releasing three years after its debut predecessor, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is the second entry in the western shooter anthology by Techland. Chronologically a prequel that takes place in 1864, this title delves into the roots of the infamous McCall brothers, Thomas, Ray, and William. The story itself is a whole mess of family drama, and you'll almost need a chart to keep track of it all. Those who played the first game to completion will remember that Ray, then mostly known as the Preacher, stumbled upon the bodies of his dead brother Thomas and his wife Marisa. Filling his soul full of rage, Ray had set off to kill his step-nephew, Billy Candle, who he thought had murdered them.

The game starts out during the Civil War, where two of the three McCall brothers are stationed, working for the Confederacy. After honorably defending the frontline and driving back the Yankees, Ray and Thomas decide to abandon their duty so that they can return home and safeguard their land and family; prompting the outrage of their commanding officer, Colonel Barnsby, and cementing themselves as traitorous deserters. Upon arriving at their homestead in Georgia, Ray and Thomas find their mother dead and little else to live for. Swearing to rebuild what they once had, they gather their third and youngest brother, Reverend William, and set out for Mexico to claim the Lost Gold of Juarez so that they can afford to make a new life. Along the way, characters from the first game will be met, new friends and enemies will be made, and an overall cheesy western tale filled with love, hate, and family drama will be spun.

If one thing can be said about Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, it's that it feels a lot more solid and polished compared to its forerunner. In the original game, Techland lobbed all kinds of unrefined mechanics into the gameplay in an attempt to see what would stick. The ones that stuck have found themselves shined up, and the excess waste was completely done away with. Thankfully, stealth is mostly a thing of the past and this release focuses primarily on run n' gunning, with a bit of cover-based shooting thrown in for diversity. Quickdraw fights have found their way back into the series, but are much more fun to engage in and actually feel like a real western standoff. Horseback riding also returns, and it feels very fluid; mostly thanks to the fact that the default key bindings are actually standard this time around. The shooting also feels a lot better, as the overall sensitivity has been decreased and an auto-aim system that makes the gameplay feel a little bit like an on-rails shooter has been implemented.

Just like in the initial game, this title allows players to choose who they want to play as most of the time; with the exception of 3-4 missions out of the 15 that are present. Who you pick to play is entirely dependent on your preferred play style. Ray remains the meaty bullet-fiend who likes to get up close and personal; he can't climb or do anything that special, but he can wield two guns at once and he has a generous arsenal at his disposal that also includes dynamite. On the other hand, Thomas plays a lot more like Billy; he can climb and help pull Ray up ledges, use a bow and arrow, and take down enemies quietly with his knives which also double as throwing weapons. There's also the returning Concentration Mode, a mechanic that has also seen a generous fine tuning. It allows Ray and Thomas to shoot down enemies in slow-motion, but each brother has a different version of the mode to further expand on the unique gameplay feel for each one of them.

With all of that said, at its heart, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is just a shooting gallery with fun pictures. As previously mentioned, there are 15 missions; each one of them feels substantially different from one another in terms of environment, but the most that you'll be doing is gunning down a buttload of enemies in every level. It almost has an arcade feel to it, just without the addicting score events and flashy bonuses. The campaign is a lot more linear this time around, which is good since level design wasn't exactly Techland's forte at the time of release, and the typical cheesy B-grade western story is a heavy focus. There area few new elements, such as a couple of free roam levels that let you do side missions for extra gold, which is used to buy new and better weapons for the brothers. The direction Techland chose is a good one, and their decision to refine and polish their mechanics, both new and old, has made a monumental difference in not only the game itself, but its inevitable ageing process.

Rating: 4.0/5.0 - Excellent, highly worth playing.

The jank (don't know if due to modern OS + hardware) and cheese are real, but the game is still good. Ever so slightly dated by 2009 (tho the PC port in 2013 has some nice visuals at times) and short.

this game include an amazing story between two or better said three brothers. i do recommend this game because the story really catched me. the only thing i have to talk negative about is the special 'quickdraw' move that allow you to do some series of shots on different targets one after the other in a combo. that was clearly made for the console and in the pc version it is really hard to handle. so hard it made me desperate all the time. there was not one situation that i got handled the way i wanted because the aiming with the two cursors was clearly made for dual controler and not for mouse. all in one i have complete story mode and it took me good 8 hours on the easiest mode. cant wait to replay it in the more difficult ones but this time i will try to play it on controler. hope thats possible.

    Not bad!

Took a little bit to get the hang of at the start of the game. I enjoyed the choice of playing either Ray or Thomas, both with their own abilities. I picked Ray for all the missions so I could leave my second play through for Thomas.

+ Enjoyed playing the back story of Ray and Thomas after completing CoJ 1.
    + Gun fights were fun.
+ Few little side missions to do that filled in some gaps.
    + Buying better guns.
+ Levels were fun to play.
    + Graphics for it's time.

    - Duel system was pretty horrible. Even after you get used to it a bit lol.
    - Few crashes after quick saving in Juarez' Alcazar.
    - Merchants were pointless except buying a few better weapons.
    - Not much incentive to collect secrets. I forgot they existed most of the time.

Overall, I liked it. Nice to have a story before the events of the first game and how it happened before then. I definitely recommend to play.

    My rating:

    6/10 Duels.

Good story, good shooting, the two playable characters are unlikable murderous assholes but that's all right as they're meant to be that way. It did feel kinda weird to be blowing away Union troops by the literal boatload in the first couple levels, but enemies changed after that.

My two major complaints are the duel mechanics - I hated them at least and most of the duels make no sense story-wise, and the fact that guns, ammo and cash dropped by enemies don't shine to make them easier to find. Now you might say this is realistic, and I might agree if it weren't for the fact that enemy corpses disappear within seconds. By the time a decently sized gun fight is over, most of the corpses are gone, and good luck looking in the sand or tall grass or whatnot for the loot.

I ended up liking Bound in Blood more the original Call of Juarez. Speaking of which, it kinda blew my mind when I realized at the end of this game that
this is a direct prequel, and one of the two playable murderous assholes is the younger version of the Preacher from the original
.

I still don't have a PC to play RDR2 with, but this is a great replacement.
