Der wahre Schrecken beginnt…

Zitat:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2042247170

Story

:') Penumbra overture, black plaque and Amneisa the dark descent, are the best horror games of all time, even tho i still prefer Penumbra a little bit over amnesia. Simple because Penumbra had a better story and better characters.

2020 Speedy Review Cleanup

Penumbra: Black Plague is an improvement upon the original. Creepier enemies, more psychological terror, and a more varied atmosphere.

There is an ever-present voice in the game that some people hate, but I liked it, especially when certain events occur. I think it made the story and pacing more interesting.

If you have played first chapter and know what is Penumbra Overture, than you will definitely like this one. Same atmosphere with more terrific monsters. The only downside is that there is no combat, it can improve suspense but I really liked Overture's choice - killing enemies or evading them, hoping you will never meet them in future.

This game is the continuation of the story in the first Penumbra game (Overture), and I think it is a massive improvement to the series. I have played through them both twice, and I still enjoyed this one more. It is definitely a step up from the first game, as it seemed like Frictional Games challenged themselves into making it more scary and innovative. I still do not think it is comparable to the scare factors of the other Frictional games, but, surprisingly, it actually comes close in my opinion.

Pros:
-Puzzles are still a great strength in this game.
-Story also maintains its good traction and may even seem improved on.
-It is way more scary than Overture. Monster sequences and chases are more plentiful, creative, and terrifying, and it introduces some new great horror elements.
-Soundtrack/sound design is better than the first game.
-It still plays surprisingly well for a 2007 indie game. It may be a bit janky, but nothing near game-breaking.
-Has the same inventory system as the first game. Still a good system.
-Voice acting is pretty good. Nothing outstanding, but not bad by any means.
-Not really a pro or a con, but something worth mentioning: There is no combat in this game, which is probably helpful in its scare factor.

Cons:
-Script writing is not the best.
-Some puzzles need a little more balancing, such as the snow puzzle.
-Graphics are the same as the first game, so they are nothing special, but definitely not an eyesore.

This game, in my opinion, is a great improvement to Overture. Don't expect it to be comparable to the best horror games out there, but do expect it to be a great experience and will give you some good scares, challenging puzzles, and an interesting story. Just like the first game, if you have the time and the money, definitely give it a try. If you have Overture, get Black Plague. It will leave you satisfied and impressed with how much it improves and capitalizes on what the first game did.

Black Plague builds on Overture pretty well, with more creepy enemies as well as some more involving and complex puzzles. The tricky combat from Overture has been removed, so your only options when faced with monsters are to use stealth to evade them, or run away and hide. I found Black Plague to be a bit more scary and tense than the first game, and the story is more interesting, taking the original's dash of Inuit mythology and creating a creepy narrative out of it. Read all the notes you can find to get a good idea of it; the game is not overloaded with monsters so you do have the time and space to follow the story in as much detail as you want. There were moments of genuine sadness and regret in Black Plague too. A recommended purchase for fans of survival horror.

Another great sequel to Penumbra Overture, this time without any spiders.

The game is now more about hiding and running, than to strike/kill enemies like in Overture. The story kept going flawlessly, revealing secrets that has been left unanswered in Overture with a few mix-up. Puzzles were in the same difficulty as in Overture that weren't done simple (but logical). Again, the game is more about puzzles than horror.

In the end, the game should've ended there because the ending fits and closes the series for good.

The first entry was pretty good, but this was just awesome - Everything has improved from the puzzles, to the enemy encounters and chase sequences. Whereas in the first game, you barely have enough time to react accordingly when being chased down and then getting annihilated at the first attempt; which to me, kills the immersion factor a bit.

The story I thought, was actually perfect for the game's overall mysterious underground layout and design. The characters were fairly decent, despite the lack of human NPCs and I thought the voice acting was one of the game's strongest points for me. The soundtrack had also improved and felt enchanting to listen to at times. And all of this was achieved by a small team of four, very talented people; which proves on how great and memorable a game can be despite the lacking number of staff working on said game.

The length of a single playthrough is somewhat shorter than the first one (well it felt that way to me at least) and there are collectables that may potentially promote some replayability value for Black Plague. The enemies are no longer killable, which is an improvement to the first title, since it made the encounters a lot more tense. However, even at hard mode, their AI hasn't improved all that much and their attacks are easily dodged if you're good at moving around, whilst being calm when using sprint. I just wish that the enemies are slightly faster, with far more ferocious and unforgiving attacks toward the player, in an effort to make the encounters more penalising, if a careless player were to get spotted. The puzzles are slightly more convoluted and they took me more time to solve, but to be honest, they are what made Penumbra a lot more memorable to me.

The best part is that it wasn't made to pander towards horror let's players from Youtube at the time, which is good because for some games, it could possibly diminish their quality at times, but I was also quite gutted that I missed out on such great indie games back then and I wish to relive that time again.

Very atmospheric but short and easy-to-beat classic. Less formulaic than Overture and more realistic than Amnesia. One can notice themes that would be developed further into what became SOMA, the masterpiece Frictional game.

So from the story I think this one is better than Overture.

Combat is now completly missing, which is good, because it sucked in Overture. But that also means that you will constantly have enemies in your way which you can't deal with. A bit annoying, especially cause you have to backtrack a lot.

Though the gameplay, especially the puzzles are way worse than in Overture in my opinion. Most of the puzzles in this game are stupid, the solutions are far-fetched. I had to look up way more solutions than in Overture. Additionally if I did that in Overture I usually thought that the solution actually made sense. But not the puzzles in Black Plague.

From the horror aspect I think this one is a bit more creepy than Overture but still not very much.

I really liked the character Clarence and his humor. The game is actually funny sometimes.

It is maybe a little bit shorter than Overture but I don't think that's a problem.

Overall, I think I still prefer Overture to this one but it's probably really just a matter of taste which one you prefer.

PC Steam

Duration: 4 hours

Walkthrough used: About half a dozen times.

Penumbra is a relatively simple FPS horror adventure. There are very few items to interact with, so most puzzles are quite simple to figure out. The first puzzle I found the most irritating as using the vice was not simple (although actually soling the puzzle was). Otherwise, the physics based control scheme works quite adequately.

After playing Penumbra, I thought it dated quite poorly for a 90s game. I was shocked to see it was made in 2008! Compared to other games made around then, the graphics etc are absolute crap.

Nevertheless, the game was still a fine diversion from reality and not a bad way to spend 4 hours.

As a complete aside: Clarence's voice kept reminding me of Styx every time he spoke.

The game is better than the previous but still lacking. I had a lot of fun playing through the game for both the story and the puzzles. There were some humor in this one too which I enjoyed (Clarence best boi). The horror elements were sometimes too overdone but it felt alright overall. The problem is though that multiple times you will find yourself stuck in places where you are supposed to do something which you had no idea which you could do or something that you missed (had to look up walkthroughs 4 times to find things like breaking a random locker with nearby debree, that always spawns, to progress!). Rating: 6/10.

Penumbra: Black Plague is basically more of what you played in Overture (finish Overture first), so if you liked that, you'll like this. The game isn't long, maybe 8 hours of real time depending on how much you struggle with solutions or reload after deaths. There are more ways to die than just monsters, and you should really be avoiding the monsters anyway. You can choose the threat level of the monsters, but the stealth mechanics aren't fun enough for me to see any reason to crank them up to hard. The physics engine can be very satisfying about 75% of the time and frustrating for the rest. Sometimes you feel really clever, and other times you feel like you're playing Surgeon Simulator and your hands don't work.

The atmosphere in the game is really effective, although the terror I felt in Overture wore off by the time I saw similar challenges in this game. Many games set you up to be alone, but this is one that earns the right to keep you from ever directly interacting with the other people in the facility. In typical video game fashion, as the story becomes clearer you find few-to-no allies, knowing they will probably suffer some awful fate and that your own won't be sunshine and rainbows either. I commend this game for making me feel the grime, solitude, and despair that it was going for. Having also finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I knew what I was getting and it still worked.

So even though the graphics are dated (I had one glitch at the end that confused the heck out of me), the physics are occasionally clumsy, the run time is short, and the challenges can feel unfair, I still found those components to work together to give me an experience overcoming fear and trials in a mix that's a bit magical, considering how few developers really pull it off this well.

The follow-up to Penumbra: Overture.

In short: Its better and scarier.

Although you won't have any weapons to defend yourself against the enemies unlike Penumbra: Overture.

Penumbra: Black Plague is a pretty good sequel to Penumbra Overture. Black Plague ditches Overture's clunky combat in favor of a more psychological horror experience, where enemies are less frequent but easier to avoid than they were in Overture. However, I feel that Black Plage does a lot of things better than Overture overall. The story is better, and the characters are intriguing and well written. The environments, albeit different from Overture, are unique, and the puzzles are genuinely challenging but satisfying to solve. Overall, Penumbra: Black Plague is a pretty good sequel to Penumbra Overture, but both games are good in and of themselves.

Reviewing games I played a long time ago:

It perfected and developed the ideias from the original Penumbra, to a point that it's an even better experience. It's the true mold of the run and hide subgenre popularized by Amnesia, with the way it designed the enemy encounters which were more or less absent from the previous Penumbra that had a rudimentary combat system.

The puzzles are often confusing enough to require a walkthrough and the suspense is gone about 5 minutes after you encounter the first enemy

Still worthy of a recommendation. The Penumbra games are still lots of fun because it's not a dumbed down survival horror game but a game where you actually have to use your brain and try out possibilities to find a solution. I find this kind of game gaming experience quite challenging and rewarding once it works and you're getting one step further. The dense atmosphere also adds up a LOT to the creepiness.

And for Linux gamer this game is a must have anyway.

Have you ever played Amnesia? Machine for Pigs? Then this is the game for you.
I bought this game in a bundle.
It took me about the same time Outlast and RE2 Remake did to beat one way through, getting mostly everything.
It's mechanics are old, as is the game.
You will feel a system shock element to it with the menu and combining things.
I used stealth. This game is a horror narrative as much as it is a stealth game.
I did not need to fight one single time, though I made the attempt to attack the enemies with boxes. I could and danced around one with great joy, which was near the end and removed the element of fear from me.
I just started finding the best way to memorize the map and run to wherever I needed to.
You will feel debilitated and weak. It is purposeful. You are not running and gunning.
That is not this game.
Solve puzzles.
Play this game. It is good. It is simple. You will get a good 6 hrs of fun out of it. Play the other games too. They are good.

An amazing game, and a hidden gem of Frictional Games, which wasn't picked up by as many people as the hugely popular Amnesia.
The game is a continuation of Overture, and here the game takes on more of the horror aspect compared to the prequel, and ditches combat mechanics completly. The use of the physics engine for puzzles is frequent, and it is often necessary to look up solutions to certain puzzles. The story takes on a more paranormal aspect compared to Overture
The protagonist now has a voice in his head, which is connected to the main antagonist in this game
. The location, an abandoned research station, is unique with its varied layout, and there are sections where you must head outside. I found the section in the dog kennels to be incredibly atmospheric, with sound of growling dogs around a corner, only to reveal that nothing is there. The glowstick and flashlight remain in the game, however I found the flashlight to be obsolete, since the flashlight needs batteries and the light from the glowstick is enough to get around easily. This game is fairly short, but the price is fair.
I would certainly recommend that anyone who is considering buying this game to do so.

If fate frowns, we all perish.

Penumbra Overture, and its sequel, Black Plague are two horror adventures videogames developed by Frictional Games,
taken from the story of the same name by Lovecraft, in these two chapters we will play the role of Philip Buchanon, who after the death of his mother will receive a mysterious letter from his father who believed he was dead even before he was born, then he will undertake this journey where the freezing cold Greenland will force him to go into a mine, where the adventure of our protagonist will begin.

The two videogames have a lot in common with Lovecraft's tales, such as looking at an enemy for too long and losing reason, panicking, or the underground alien creatures long forgotten somewhere in the Arctic, the Tuurngait.

Penumbra Overture unlike Black Plague gives us the opportunity to defend ourselves with the pickaxe, even killing enemies, the most common are infected dogs, while in its second chapter we should keep a low profile and avoid any contact with these creatures.

These two Penumbra also have some rather trivial puzzle moments and it won't be long before we reach the final solution to the riddle, however the game focuses heavily on the psychological horror factor. The complex story behind Penumbra will also be re-proposed in SOMA, a videogame always developed by Frictional Games. Despite the poor duration of the video games, both played in a row and calculating both the duration is a little more than 7 hours, both video games have truly memorable and rather frightening moments, especially Black Plague, where you can walk through the claustrophobic corridors infested by Tuurngait that patrol with the torches will turn out to be really scary and we should sneak around. I would have nothing more to say about Penumbra, if not that they should be tried, above all because they don't cost much now.
