Mouse and Keyboard controls don't work in fullscreen, and it's difficult to play windowed on a 4k display. Only get if you have a controller. This may be an issue with the game not being designed for 4k displays.

A brilliant game but a poor experience.

Apparently this has been an issue for ages and has never been fixed.

Very nice puzzle action platformer. I enjoyed it very much for the first 90%. To bad the last level was so incredibly frustrating that it spoiled the entire game for me. I hate leaving a game unfinished when I'm so close to the end, but this final level is atrocious. No checkpoints and a new mechanic that forces a veeery different playstyle.

Trust me, if you ever get frustrated while playing this, it's not always gonna be your fault. The game is overall pretty good, but darn it, the movement can get jank. I mean full on, there have been times the game shows me that I'll grab onto a safe spot but then have me slip off of it. There's just points where it seems impossible, but you'll make it. I had a blast my first play through, but after playing it again, I realize how unfair things can get. It feels like a lot of problems are solved by brute forcing it over and over again. I both love and hate this game.

The biggest problem with this game is that it's frustrating without being rewarding. The final level is an especially egregious offender of this, where you must fight through 7 rooms of enemies with no checkpoints between, and you must do it all without getting hit in order to achieve the good ending.
Which I did. And was subsequently awarded for it with nothing but a wasted hour and a credits scene.

The story barely exists, the jump is often inaccurate (sometimes moving you an inch forward on a platform, rather than jumping off it like you wanted - resulting in your death), the grapple hook throw doesn't always register, the menu screens are incredibly unpolished (continue/skills/options/etc screen's background is off centre, in the skills menu it doesn't always highlight the skill you're hovering over), and the attack, skill and interact buttons swap frequently. Resulting in you killing civilians instead of getting into elevators, zipping away on your grapple hook instead of killing the dude you were swinging into, and frequently confusing skills during combat.

I had fun on the first few levels, but at a point the charm fades away and leaves only frustration.

I started out liking this game a lot but got frustrated.
The idea is really neat but I feel that movement during combat is too limited and that most upgrades have too little impact. The late levels ramp up difficulty by giving you fewer checkpoints so you have to repeat the tedious parts before you can retry the challenging parts, and that is, well, tedious.

Ronin is a very imagination indie action game. However, it could be improve, too. But for a Indie game with not so much publicity, it is really good.
The Ronin could use the rope to make a quick transfer. This action game is impressive cause while you engage with the enemy, this game will turned into a turn-based game, maybe bullet time for the game player, too. Never heard of it, right?
However, the game is too short. And the operation of this game really need to be improved. I spend a lot of time to get used to how to control the character. There are also some bugs and unreasonable stage design. The turn-based make you don't have a refreshing sense of feedback while killing the enemy, that's a shame.
This game definitely worth you play. It is not expensive, too. There is no doubt that this game worth us support.

When I had first started this game I found myself really enjoying the premise. A turn based side scrolling stealth game is such a unique idea and sounded really interesting and learning that the creator of this game also worked on games like Immortal Planet and the artist of this game worked on Helltaker, all signs were pointing to beat the game. Ronin itself has simple story that perhaps could have been fleshed out more but works for what it is. It has a unique control scheme that takes some getting used to but is super rewarding to learn. You'll find yourself replaying the same level over and over again at some points and honestly that was the biggest downside at points. The difficulty ramps up very early and having to restart an entire area because you are bombarded by enemies or the lock down counter hit zero or simply because of a glitch on the game (I cannot count how many times I grappled and was sucked under the map) was tedious to say the least. However I'd like to say the wash of pride and feeling of reward you get after wiping out all the enemies and making your way to your motorcycle is worth it. Not to mention the soundtrack at points is super fun especially on your way to kill the second boss. Good game glad I spent the time to 100% it : )

You're a ninja girl. Probably, but pretty flat. It's all for aerodynamics anyway. You will jump, you will kill and you will die. A lot. Most fights are little puzzles and you unlock perks as you go on. When you finally figure out a difficult level, it feels pretty good. I didn't get very far, because it's pretty challenging for a small brain, just look at my profile picture. The story is pretty good, the controls and mechanics sometimes rusty but only when you really just want to do weird stuff.

*whoosh* you've seen nothing *slash slash*

In hindsight, I should've asked for a refund before hitting the two hour mark. It's not a horrible game, but it's not a good one either. First, there's seemingly no plot. Or rather, it's as if there's a plot in the heads of the programmers that didn't quite make it onto the screen. Or maybe it's in there but I never saw it because the controls are so fussy — which brings me to the next qualm. The controls aren't reliable nor intuitive. Perhaps it's an issue with the UI, but there are often times I try to use the grappling hook and can clearly see the UI indicate it should connect, but it does not. This is impacted further by a single poor control scheme choice — once you have moved the right stick, you MUST use the grappling hook. If you've changed your mind, you will have to hold the stick in whatever direction you thought might work out while you push another button. If it re-centers, you'll end up trying to launch instead of doing something else. If you try to rotate back but your hand slips, you'll probably end up missing the shot that way too. Finally, the save points take too long to load, and many just don't make sense. Sometimes they're right at the beginning of a combat. Other times, they're down the hall. In any case, this is the type of game that demands constant reloading. Were it an instant action without load times, that would be fine. However, this is not the case. It grates on the nerves when you have to redo the same single room and it takes as long to load as your last failed attempt.

That said, the game could've been pretty awesome without these frustrations.

First the obvious - this game looks like Gunpoint. Unfortunately it's nothing like it - not just in game mechanics but in actual polish as well. The story is throwaway, but whatever. The combat if it works as it should would actually be interesting & that brings me to my point - almost every system in this game (that I managed to encounter before refunding) is utterly broken. So first off the jump - you have very limited angles at which you can jump & even if you find a good one it's a dice toss whether the character actually jumps that angle or jumps forward 2cm. Yes, really - quite regularly too. Same story with the grapple - dice toss whether it actually connects at all & even if it does you can't predict the angle you'll swing so you don't know whether you will swing away from danger or into it. Also in combat you can only move by jumping.. This includes trying to get through a window opening. Outside of combat you can simply climb through but not in combat - and you may need to move through one - which can take 5 turns sometimes to get the jump and grapple just right. And you frequently have to deal with the threat of alarm. Now this is not a stealth game (as the game constantly interrupts to tell you) but that isn't really true, you die in a single hit & most importantly one of the 3 optional objectives each mission is for no alarm to be raised so if you want to do that you can't allow that to happen. I can go on and on. Also when you don't move the character moves incredibly sluggishly which is just weird. There's a core of a really good idea here - if it was polished to the degree Gunpoint was it would probably have been pretty good - but it isn't. I can go on but you get the point.

It's beautiful!! The game encourages you to play it in the best way possible, so you'll definitely replay a bunch of levels in order to get them just right. As a guy who rarely feels motivated to replay games or even parts of them, I was really surprised when I just couldn't play a level until I'd completed all of the previous one's objectives. I think that says a lot about how much I loved Ronin!!!
Absolutely recommended!!!

A maddeningly frustrating game that appears to be turn-based strategy, but instead relies on arcade-style real-time control of your character to pull off the most interesting moves. Just when you think you understand how the game works, it introduces new mechanics (with no warning) that throw you for another loop. If you like games with no tolerance for error, where you are guaranteed to die multiple times in order to learn how to predict the future behavior of enemies, that require you to play a near-perfect game in order to advance, you'll probably quite like this one: the graphics are clean and simple and effective, and the sound is nice. As for me, I finished the last level – after learning a completely new character death mechanic and having all semblance of useful checkpoints taken away from me – with an overwhelming sense of FINALLY THIS GAME IS OVER, rather than any sense of accomplishment.

Pros:
+ the fighting mechanic is really dynamic and immerse yourself in the action
+ the story is fairly simple, but it lets you imagine the reasons of this vendetta
+ the graphics are in phase with the ambiance, the facilities and the rain reflect, with good balance, the dark atmosphere
+ the progression in your competences with the skills tree is well balanced and it forces you to not just go on a rampage, and sometimes, the best option is to analyze the level and be stealthy

Cons:
- some checkpoints are not very well placed and force you to walk 5 to 10 seconds to rejoin the fight after each death
- on the platform which you can jump through, sometimes the jump arc indicates you that the next jump is going to pass through the platform, but in fact you stay on it, which resulted in some unexpected deaths, but hey “the jump arc is a lie” :)

Ronin is a solid game with a unique fight style, and which can be quite challenging. I strongly recommend it (even full price).

Nice game with great thought through turn-based fighting system.
I want to warn you about some fact about game (not spoilers).
Though it called ronin - it's not a game about ninja: there is little to no stealth. Usually you need to kill all the enemies and avoid civilian casualties.
There is not a lot of story in this game. Story is plain and simple and motivation of the antagonist is clear from the beginning.

This game is about finding your way in a room with a lot of enemies without fast-paced gameplay. You have your time to think you next step. All this with satisfying visuals and nice music.

If you are looking for moderate game with a sword killing to chill without mashing buttons on your keyboard, this is one to look upon.

You'll find yourself trying to jump to where the jump arc indicates but instead you'll just jump 1 mm away from where you were and end up getting shot.
You won't be able to properly pause and execute moves quite often.

Ronin is an interesting turn-based stealth game that feels like a combination of Mark of the Ninja and Gunpoint. It does the most it can do with it's various mechanics and level design and then it ends with little fuss not outstaying it's welcome.
The near constant rain and looming cityscape do a good job of setting the mood for this tale of revenge but the story is very bare bones and while it clearly isn't the focus, some more information on the targets and some closure at the end would have been nice.
My favorite part of Ronin is how good the game feels when you're the whirlwind of death it's stop time mechanic lets you be. Killing several guards in a matter of seconds and pushing the last one out of a window never stopped being satisfying. And that's good because you'll be repeating things over and over again until you get good enough to master the mechanics. The challenges you have to complete to unlock skill points aid in this mastery by serving as a measurement of your skill.
Everything largely works as intended with some small hiccups here and there. The jump arc sometimes gets snagged on the environment causing a death which can be a little frustrating. And the arc itself doesn't indicate how certain things will effect your jump like when you jump into someone.
But these are small issues. When you realize they are there you can usually account for them.
Overall Ronin is a great little gem to pick up on sale when you want something to mess around with for 8ish hours.
It doesn't outshine it's inspirations but it does a great job giving it's own spin on things.

This game is just the fight scene from the end of Kill Bill Volume 1, but if it were stealthier. I love it so much. One playthrough is about 3-4 hours, but you'll want to play it again and again. It feels like the developers cut everything inessential and what's left is a tiny morsel of perfection.

Honestly, this game is MOSTLY enjoyable. But there's one problem that, for me anyway, puts it over the edge to 'pointlessly frustrating' instead of 'difficult but fun'

The RNG.

Now, this game doesn't APPEAR to have RNG. And yet, in the later levels, you'll execute the same plan multiple times, trying to just change one part of the end.

And you'll start to notice the inconsistencies.

That guard you kill in the darkness right at the start? Sometimes the guard across from him sees you during the kill animation. Sometimes his red laser eye doesn't reach the body until you have safely jumped away.

Redoing the same segments in the same manner and occasionally restarting because, for no apparent reason, a guard decided to look directly at you this time, is just frustrating, not fun.
