Über das Spiel

It was foretold that during Ragnarok, the gods would fall and the nine realms would be consumed by frost and fire… but it is not what happened. The gods did not perish. Instead, for seven terrible years, giants, beasts, and the undead have ravaged the realms while the gods inexplicably withheld their protection. Immersed in darkness and chaos, mankind’s own world of Midgard lies captive in the cruel grasp of maniacal Loki.

As a hardened Viking warrior, Rune players will align with their chosen god as they pillage villages for powerful weapons and armor, complete quests for their deity and receive blessings of strength and magic. Your quest is simple – destroy Loki, but you needn’t do it alone. Team up with your Viking allies to gain the benefits of shared experience and the strength that only comes in numbers.

Time is against you. Loki will reset Ragnarok keeping Midgard in an endless apocalypse. Rise, Warrior! Save yourself and all of mankind from the Norse apocalypse.

This game needs a LOT of work to be truly enjoyable. The voice acting is not too bad, and they kept as much as they could from the OG Rune.

But it plays too wonky at this point that i wouldnt recommend it.

- Villagers get one-shotted in defence missions. They are just cannon fodder and of no help whatsoever. Even the towers that you can build do nothing (I mean they shoot, but do miniscule damage). Let us arm the villagers and bowmen with real equipment that they can actually help.
- Surtblood warriors bounce back on charge, if parried? and have instant windup on spells.
- Items spew out all over the place.
- Can't sort items in crafting, which makes it annoying to constantly go through items.
- Using spells like Ball Lightning and Hammer Throw is only half good at best, as you cannot see where the spell will travel. You have to figure it out yourself.
- Summon Boar is not a good spell, as the boar also will get instagibbed and do no damage. At least you can respec as much as you want.
- Quest makers do not update correctly sometimes.
- Player recovery from staggering is too slow. Even if you take no damage from, lets say fire, you still are staggered for 3 seconds or so.

Like, all in all, this game needs a bit of serious support if it wants to be a great game.

Ok,the Game seems to be abandoned now,so here is my Review.
Waited a while because i always thought that maybe something happens with it.

The Game looks and Sounds nice. Also the Fighting Feels good.
But thats it,maybe Fun for 10 to 15 Hours.

The Game is filled too much with Things of wich the Devs probably thought it could hook Players but nothing is well thought out.
Like a Frankensteins Monster thats put together way Worse.
Forget the Crafting, and building Stuff. Also the Defense Missions, everything is Buggy and sometimes Unbalanced.

So basicly the only Thing about it that is Good is something that came over from the First Rune.
And for Sure the Artstyle,Trolls in the Game and the Chars look good, you get pretty Athmospheric Stuff there.

If the Game is on Sale, and the Theme is yours, maybe grab it.But dont expect much.
You get a good Viking Fighting Game for around 10 Hours, the Rest is pure Buggy Filler in Alpha State.

Otherwise avoid this Game and to Hel with it.
Absolutely cant Recommend it.

I've only returned 1 other game before. I don't even remember what it was now. I hope I forget this game too. Rune was the first game I ever finished and I still remember crossing the rainbow bridge. I dreamed of a sequel since the original and this was just.. painful. I feel bad for everyone who worked hard on this and I hope whoever is still working on this is able to finally complete this game. Maybe I'll give it another chance if they do.

I was excited for this game. I loved the first Rune and was honestly expecting more of the same.

But this, I have no idea what this is. This is a bizarre viking game that seems to have no idea what it wants to be.
It has an Open world that doesn't really serve any purpose at all for being open world.
You collect resources like it is a survival construction game, but you don't get to do anything interesting with them.
The buildables are all in preset locations, you basically just repair existing structures for basically little or no reason.
Enemies respawn like you're playing an MMORPG.
Enemies scale in level with you, making new powers and gear feel exactly the same as your old gear and levels.

This really genuinely feels like the result of a team with absolutely no vision for what they are making. I cannot see how this game could ever be patched into something enjoyable.

The game has had a year and a half of patches and updates before I even touched it.
I wish i could like this game, but there is nothing here to enjoy.

Dead Island: Viking Edition

For anyone thinking of getting this game and being able to relive the glory days of Rune, forget it. This game is just a slightly prettier version of Valheim. That's not to say this is a bad game, but it will disappoint if you were hoping for a true successor to Rune. I would personally recommend Valheim over this, as that game shows more creativity and spirit than this game does.

Before I begin let me state that while I do not currently recommend the game (2021-02-20) this decision is due solely to numerous game-breaking bugs. This game has a LOT of potential, but too many things prevent it from living up to said potential. I feel that a player who would normally enjoy the game would likely be raging right after his two hour return window was up the bugs drove him crazy.

First, combat is bad. Not overall. Combat is bad due to bugs. My biggest issue is when you use a power-attack or skill to knock an NPC down. Half of the time (more frequently if it is an elite NPC) the NPC falls down and then his state resets to standing. If this is an elite NPC not only is the NPC teleported to the standing position, but it is also already in a power-attack which cannot be dodged. This can kill you if you are low on life when instead you should have a chance to attack the NPC while it is getting up.

Archers are bad in this game. Not their aim, how they cheat. If you fire an arrow at a wall, rock, or part of the terrain, it collides. If an NPC fires at you THROUGH A WALL OR MOUNTAIN, the arrow sails through the void and hits you. I have literally been killed by an NPC who was on the other side of a wooden wall from me due to this. In other words, if you see an archer, charge him FAST.

I have screenshots of various NPCs buried to their heads in the terrain. This is not on purpose, the NPCs fell through the terrain or were sloppily placed by a dev! Once they see you they can shoot you from under the terrain but you cannot always hit them! If the NPC is a melee one, you WILL be hit by his weapon when you run up to attempt to attack his head, which makes them pop out of the ground.

The voice-acting is great for a few characters, but a LOT of others sound like they were recorded in a barrel or on a cheap microphone. This is not a game-breaker but it does NOT sound top-quality. Heck, Ark does a better job here, and Wildcard is an indie developer.

My game is installed on an M.2 2280 NVME drive. Not a SATA SSD or HDD. Why then, does the game completely freeze randomly, mainly during combat, and then warp around as something is loaded or unloaded? I have 128GB of RAM and the game is 64bit so it can use that RAM. The RAM is coupled to an i7-6950X and an RTX 2080 Ti. There is no excuse for this random loading, especially during combat! My drive tests and between 3,400MB/s and 3,500MB/s so if the game needs more than that it is less optimized than Ark!

There is also a carry-over bug when creating a new character. I created one yesterday to try a different skillset. Being familiar with the numerous bugs I managed to not die a single time. While in my inventory I glance over and it says this guy died EIGHT TIMES. Wrong, that was the first character, which was deleted. Upon going into my save folder to see if I could reset this somehow, I also notice that when I deleted my first character it did NOT remove the map data (areas I had seen and unlocked) from the save folder! I now have a character with no deaths that claims to have died eight times. I quit playing and have no drive to return now.

With all of that said, I will say that the graphics are great. The story is good thus far, and the world seems large enough to warrant plenty of exploration. That is, if you can deal with the bugs while doing so.

It's hard for me to give a thumbs down to Rune 2 because the devs really put in the effort to give this game a big, dumb, grinning heart of fun, but too many important parts of the game are unpleasant or just don't work.

It's a big, open world, hack and slash action RPG. Emphasis on the action, most of your time is just running through the open world environment, slicing and smashing people, collecting loot and mats (The only currencies in the game) to complete quests running back and forth across this world. It's quick to play and heavy on the murder. Your moveset is the typical Dark Souls stuff. Block, parry, roll. Enemy light attacks are hard countered by parrying, while their heavy attacks ignore parries and are hard countered by rolling. Unfortunately, all this just feels terrible. The art style is so blurry it looks like each model is smeared with vaseline. All these great viking enemy designs are just wasted and unreadable. The physics feels like you're swimming underwater. Sometimes your mighty hammer will send an enemy flying but sometimes you'll just barely nick them and their body will vaporize in a red mist. Enemy attack tracking, hitboxes, timing, all feels completely random. The first boss feels like he's trolling you by purposefully attacking you with a combo that can never and will never hit you on its first swing just to mess with your parry timing. Everything feels off, everything feels unsatisfying in a game that really needs to be big, dumb, satisfying fun. It tries, it really does, to give you some enemy variety and some video gamey enemy abilities like area effects and a charge attack you must parry, but it really takes better telegraphing, player control, and art style to convey and really make that stuff work. Rune 2 doesn't have it, so it feels like a game where a bunch of dumb stuff happens and you munch healing potions and keep slashing things.

Everything else in the game fits the b-tier jank you'd expect. The quests are dumb with hammy voice acting but it's all with a great wink and a nod smile that you can't hate it. Almost nobody wants you to collect 30 things. The crafting is almost pointless as you almost always are showered with loot appropriate to your level tier just from your daily slaughter. Just running through the open world and killing things is fun except for the killing part.

Alot needs to be done with optimization for this game. My build is well beyond the rec reqs and performance has never really improved after patches; just fixes that you wouldn't really notice unless it directly affects you.

If you want to support the devs, buy the game. But, expect a very Early Access experience. :)

Do not waste your lifetime with this game!
This game plays and feels like an unfinished product.

Below are the most prominent bad points about the game.

1. Story & Quest´s feels like they are made for an MMO but even in an MMO this is done way better.
2. Boring and clunky combat.
3. Bad and unneccesary crafting system (Never needed to craft anything because it was allways worse then what i found on random mobs).
4. Building villages is just repairing pre defined buildings.
5. Glitches everywhere! Your avatar and enemies can get stuck in the enviroment so you can´t proceed with a quest and have to restart fom the last attuned gate.

Hello Everyone,

First of all, I want to thank the developers that they decided to make a sequel.
Now about the bad in the game. Well, everything is bad here except for the combat system, it turned out well and somewhat resembles the classic Rune. Everything else such as graphics, gameplay, the narrative is very bad, unfortunately.

And I will not take into account glitches and freezes in the game, maybe my PC is a bit weak (geforce rtx 2080 ti and i9)...

I strongly recommend not to buy this glitching thing and better play the classic Rune.
About multiplayer. Well, for those who want to try multiplayer, you should know that he is dead in the game. There are 5-8 active people in the discord community.

The game looks as if it was collected from purchased assets for a couple of months by several students, but I'm sure that even students make better games than this one.

A cursed game with a very troubled development cycle...

What happened Human Head Studios did a closed beta back in 2018 on steam to gain interest from players then they went silent for 4-6 months.
At that time we gotta remember they were also selling backers/supporters edition on their website during the beta but what's sad is that they ended up pulling a last minute epic store exclusive stunt move.
After launching on epic and screwing their early backers they shut down the studio, abandoned the game and left it unfinished.
Another scummy tactic from a bunch of sellouts, i almost backed the game and oh boy am i glad i didn't.

Now here we are almost two years after the initial planned steam release...
Well Studio 369 i appreciate you guys are at least trying to improve and fix the game on what must be a messy code base.
The game in itself isn't completely bad, it's just nothing special.
RUNE II is a very straight forward action/rpg with basic crafting/loot elements.
You won't find deep characters development or rich story here.

If you decide to play this, thrust me it won't take you too long to realize that it's average at best.
From the blurry graphics (the generic blurry UE4 look), the unstable performances to the clunky combat system, everything feels under developed and rushed.
To the game's defense i will say some environments looks better than the others, nothing groundbreaking but still few well designed areas.
Atmosphere is alright, overall it's kinda faithful to what we can imagine from the vikings fantasy times.
In the end RUNE II still can be fun to play if you like vikings games and can tolerate the clunky combat, the annoying janky UI and few bugs here and there.

That's a very light recommendation from me, only buy it on a very very deep sale.
Since we won't be getting AC Valhalla on steam i guess that's one of the only few options we got for recent viking themed games.
Oh btw fuck Chris Rhinehart.
Rating 5.5/10.

This game doesn't get the credit it deserves - specifically, the most recent update.

Here is the thing - can things get tighter? Sure. Could we see more content? Sure. Are there some problems? Yea.

But the thing is - if you want a game that has a gritty viking rpg, some old school rpg vibes and design...This has it.

I would love to see a better ui, and all the other things but the main thing I wanted to say is that this is a good game. Period. It's a good game with a ton of potential. Cool character design. Good loot and armor designs. Cool weapon system. Lots of options. It's a big open world. I haven't seen mounts yet - maybe its not there. but you know what? It's decent.

Worth a shot. Worth the support.

This game is … bad.

-Overview-

There's trouble in RUNE II's past, and it has hit the Steam store with terrible optimisation, a generic plot and “okay” gameplay. I received my review copy of this game a few days prior to release, but waited until now to review it, as I wanted to give the developers more time to polish it, and, to be honest, I just didn't want to play it more in the state it was in. Now though, it has come time to write this review, and, unfortunately, after playing only five hours, I've had enough. Most of the issues can be found in the “Performance” section of this review.

Honestly, while the store page claims RUNE II is a game for players who “don't take themselves too seriously” and “like a game that's self-aware”, it is, in reality, just a game that isn't good enough to be taken seriously. There's nothing goofy or “self-aware” about it, unless the occasional piece of terrible dialogue from side-characters was made for that purpose.
????????Mouse/keyboard and controller both work fine with this game.????????
-Gameplay-

Basics:

In traditional open-world fashion, RUNE II features side-quests, loot and a crafting system. While said side-quests, unfortunately, consist largely of fetch-quests, the loot and crafting systems aren't too bad, though the loot can come in pretty fast, making inventory management a chore on occasion. Players can also construct buildings in predetermined locations, in order to gain access to various services such as advanced crafting.

Speaking of inventory management, the U.I., while not awful, isn't the best. All weapons and consumables live in a gear wheel, which is tiny on the inventory screen, and awkward to use in combat. An ordinary, numbered hotkey bar would be preferable.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2312290043

Combat:

Gaining some points back, here, RUNE II employs a somewhat souls-like combat system, with light and heavy attacks, parry, block and dodge. In addition, one has access to a number of deity-inspired abilities and a nice variety of weaponry, including short and long swords, hammers, axes and bows. This is all good stuff, and the combat itself really isn't too bad, though it's let down by the game's terrible performance and visual issues, which I'll explain later.

A.I. is a mixed bag. While enemies seem to dodge, block and use powerful attacks at appropriate moments, they seem to be very basic in other ways. For example, enemies seem to be triggered not upon seeing the player, but by proximity; I've heard enemies start shouting at me from the other side of a thick, rock wall as I walked past. Bosses, meanwhile, are essentially bigger, tankier enemies that are resistant to knockdown. Standard stuff.

More “unusual” enemy behaviour can also be witnessed from time to time, such as said enemies running into the deep and disappearing forever, if there's water between them and the player. Very odd. Archers also tend to spam arrows at quite a ridiculous rate, but to very little effect. It's a sight, to say the least. Oh, and enemies get stuck sometimes.

World Design:

Expectedly, as a game set firmly in Norse mythology, RUNE II features lots of snowy hills and green forest. The world features some interesting landmarks and is relatively easy to navigate, though I found myself swimming quite a lot in order to get places. The game teaches players how to build a raft in the tutorial, but with objectives frequently set on the other side of a lake, I found swimming to be easier than constantly building new rafts or finding my old one. The dungeon-crawling experience isn't bad, offering something different to the rest of the game.

-Story-

Starring a resurrected mortal as the player-character, RUNE II sees its hero battle against the hordes of the god Loki and free the land. The protagonist is guided by Heimdall, Watchman of the Gods, who tasks them with defeating evil entities, and … walking back and forth a lot. RUNE II takes its plot and main characters completely seriously, and not in a “self-aware” way. There isn't really anything particularly bad about said plot or characters; they just aren't that interesting.

Unlike said main characters, however, certain side characters have some quite ridiculous dialogue, with comically bad voice acting to match. Some of this is, undoubtedly, intentional goofiness, but I'm not convinced it's a case of the game being designed with self-awareness in mind.

-Technical-
This game was played with the following PC specs:
Intel i5-4440 3.10 GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER 4GB
1680x1050 resolution
Windows 10
Game installed on HDD
Visuals:

Certain images on the store page may look nice, but everything from the shading to the models and textures of RUNE II are pretty dated, though the U.I. looks quite nice, at least. There are a few oddities, such as arrows just hovering in the air near the player, and a few rather annoying features such as vast, blinding particle effects from one of the enemies I ran into. Good luck fighting when you can't even see your own character.

Performance:

Killing any enjoyment I could have had from RUNE II's combat, was the markedly poor performance. Using the specs listed above, I could manage 60fps at times, but it was usually dropping below that, even on the lowest settings (which make the game look like playdough). The game also hangs frequently, making combat troublesome.

Sometimes, even with the game paused, my CPU, GPU and RAM usage would all be over 95%. This is absolutely ridiculous for a game that looks this bad. For reference, I can run Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey at 60fps without issues like this.

Audio:

Besides the mixed-quality voice acting, RUNE II's audio is decent; the soundtrack, while not particularly remarkable, is nice enough, and the sound effects are adequate.

Issues:

Only adding the considerable performance issues, the game has a couple more technical issues to contend with; namely, long loading screens, flickering water and hovering objects. The game also failed to respawn me at one point, forcing me to Alt-F4 and reload it.

-Summary-

It's not very good, mmkay?

Does the game need a lot of bug fixes, yes.
Does the game need a lot of polish, yes.
Do they deserve my money, yes.
Anyone company that can come back from that kind of betrayal and still produce a playable game deserves my $29.99. Regardless of all the shortcomings, it's still a fun game and I enjoy playing it.

After seeing regular content updates and updates that match the roadmap, I can say I have high hopes for this title in the forseeable future. I am still experiencing FPS drops and stuttering, but they have mentioned that they are continually working on performance and optimization improvments.

I am really enjoying this game, and can’t wait to see the finished product. After all it has been completely re done. I praise the new dev team for all their work.

You ever watch 'so bad its good' movies?

This is the videogame equivalent. And I don't mean in the sense of The Room, more like Demolition Man. Competent yet lolfest

Combat is fast, frenetic and basically a joy to rip through groups of admittedly dumb AI. Loot and level ups come thick and fast. Voice acting ranges from superb to 'did this person just switch through 7 colloquial UK accents... SHE'S IRISH NOW??' Music is wonderful, full of feeling and depth rather than standard 'excitement number 4 song'

The bugs, although they exist, haven't been game breaking (there was one quest in which I had to destroy a statue but couldn't put any damage on the statue so I had to bait a group of bandits to follow me in to one of my villages and get them to do it, which seemed like a much more fun endeavour) The developers have a road map of things they wish to add and fixes they want to push so I feel confident that they will be supporting this game in the future

From what I have been told this is nothing like the original Rune, also crafting seems pointless?

I cannot recommend this game enough, from start to finish this puts a big smile on my face. The juxtaposition of serious and ridiculous is quite frankly perfect and this game will always be put on to clear the drudgery of the day. I just wish we had more games like it that are actually fun and not just here to win a writing award.

Big axe, hordes of enemies, giant smile. Let's go.

Gave it a honest try, It was fun... but this game is an EARLY ACCESS / ALPHA, I can't imagine why they released this. I would give this game a thumbs up in EARLY ACCESS, but not a full release
