It's a silly simple game that feels like it was designed in the 80's before people really had a chance to see good video game design.
Literally bark at people and get the food they drop... really? And you have to grind each level for a few boring minutes until you get a crumb of a new mechanic like another dog that competes with you?!
If it was cheap and you're into a time-waster then I would recommend it, but the price makes it atrocious.

Like the best games, easy to get into but hard to master. Some of the later levels can be pure chaos full of your barking(or meowing) at humans and competing with other dogs for the neverending food that those humans are constantly dropping. But beware! The bears and elks are out to get you and the babushkas will knock you out with their fish. Fitting soundtrack and cute pixelized animation.

tldr: fun gameplay, even if you have 5 minutes to spare

I love this game, it is fantastic. Fun, intense, original. It could have been made by HAL Laboratory as it is an entirely polished experience, is gorgeous to look at, has a great simple gameplay and a nice thought scoring system. I got nothing bad to say about it, no cons. Levels are nicely built with a lot of variety, difficulty is progressive, there are secondary objectives in each levels that makes you think and play differently, you can play all kinds of animals and being in the subway has never been funnier. Really, I lack words but it does a lot of things right, as a scoring, arcade game. Excellent !

Underrated af. RSD is that mysterious and enticing cabinet you discover in a coin-op arcade and can't help but feed 10+ dollars worth of quarters into, just having a blast. Concept is hilarious and gameplay is tight and pleasantly chaotic. Both the campaign and endless mode are great. It'll get your tail wagging! And make you wanna murder poodles.

Fun and fast paced arcade fun, really entertaining and great colours/backgrounds too. The soundtrack is awesome soundtrack! The tasks vary enough to keep you interested and as you play you get more characters to choose from. Gamepad recommended.

I saw this game at PAX East twice and it really piqued my interest which says a lot considering how many games you see at PAX and only several games really stand out to me each year. Finally bought the game on sale for $7 but honestly I would have been happy to pay the full price of $14 as I had loads of fun.

It's based on true stories of dogs roaming Russian subways if I remember correctly talking to the devs there. Although I'm sure there aren't bears with fire claws in Russian subways, but if they exist my gosh this game will help you.

You play as a pup, cat, or worm featured from several different indie titles like Lovers in Dangerous Space, Nidhog, and VA-11 Hall-A trying to juggle things in the air in hopes of eating tasty food while being guided by a Russian dictator cat and diabolical kittens.

The game first introduces you to the concept of scaring a Russian to drop vodka up in the air and you can bark at it to bop it to have it drop at another Russian to cook the food he's holding. It's a simple mechanic that gets expanded upon through the game with other things you have to carefully juggle like hot sauces and caffeine that can affect you or the creatures in the game. Each level has a minimum of passing grade you need to achieve but you can get additional bones by fulling the level specific challenges which help you learn new ways to cook food.

You get introduced to different enemies and learn how they can benefit you or be a disadvantage to how you get your food to help stay alive for the level. It definitely doesn't shy away from being ridiculous with bears getting hot sauce and suddenly becoming a bear with fire claws with longer range or elks charging you faster with caffeine. You can also eat hot sauce to shot fire balls at enemies and at people to barbeque their food.

The writing is kind of humorous with puns laid through with the kittens talking about the different foods or challenges you'll come across.

It can be challenging to get most of the bones needed to get to the last level but I didn't find it to be super frustrating for the most part and figured out you can do multiple runs of a level to focus on certain challenge bones.

If you're looking for a ridiculous game with cute dogs/cats and other random creatures, I highly recommend this game.

A cute little game where you're a dog trying to get food for your pack's kittens on the subway. :)

Bark to make people drop what they're holding (food for points and refilling the energy bar or vodka that explodes).
The energy bar goes down if you bark too much and it depletes over time, so you need to refill it by eating.
Vodka can damage you, but only other animals looking to get the food you've made people drop.
Your feline comrade gives you tips and instructions.

You bark with X, jump with Z (I'll remap it to Y, so it's easier to press) and move with the arrow keys.

There's an endless mode for score beating and a campaign mode that can have Normal and Tourist modes with the Tourist one being shorter and easier.

More variety in opponents and character skins probably appears later, but I've only completed the first level in Tourist mode.

Nothing grand, but I like the concept, animals, music and graphics (very well done for pixel art ), so I recommend it. :)

If there is hope, it lies in the Proletaricat.

Russian Subway Dogs is an arcade, score-attack game where you play as a dog trying to feed itself in the subway. You’ll have to balance combos, food thieves and other requirements in what can be quite a hectic race against time to keep yourself fed.

Positives:
  • The pixel art is just fantastic, really high quality stuff that’s very consistent and really fits the overall feel of the game. The levels themselves are also really well designed.
  • The gameplay is really tight. The controls are super simple, you move, bark and jump. That’s it. But everything is really responsive and precise, so you’ll never feel cheated or anything. It works really well and that’s what you expect from a high-quality arcade game.
  • The core gameplay is fairly simple, but there’s actually a fair amount of depth to the game, especially as you progress. You bark at commuters to get them to drop whatever they’re holding (either food, vodka or a pickup). Eating food is how you earn most of your points. You can cook food by dropping a bottle of vodka on a commuter (this makes the food worth more points). The pickups are hot sauce and coffee which either let you breathe fire (hot sauce) or slow down time (coffee), they’re really handy.
  • There’s two main ways to increase the point value of the food your eating. The first is to build up an air combo by catching your food mid-air. This builds up really quickly and multiplies your food points by the number of your combo, you can rack up loads of points really quickly if you can be consistent in grabbing food mid-air. You can also juggle vodka (up to ten times I believe) by barking it at to keep it in the air which then acts as a multiplier for the food you drop it on. Focusing on one or the other can be effective but you’ll see the best results if you can use them both to your advantage. You can also complete missions given to you by The Proletaricat for some extra points in Endless mode (in campaign they earn bones which are used to unlock new levels).
  • There is a fair amount of food variety ranging from shawarmas (the most basic item) to fish that need to be cooked before eating. There are also bears and elk in the subway stations that you can eat by cooking them.
  • Your main ‘opponent’ is really your health meter, if it drops to zero you lose, you gain it back by eating and the more points you get the hungrier you are (i.e. the faster the bar decreases). You start at zero hunger in endless, it varies for the campaign missions. Barking and jumping cause a slight jump in the bar, worth remembering. There are also some animals that will try and nick your food; Dobermans will hurry towards anything dropped on the floor, poodles will fling themselves into the air to steal your food and pigeons will pluck things right out of the sky. Bears and elk will also eat your food but this can actually be used to your advantage in the case of bears.
  • It definitely has that ‘one more turn/try’ kind of feeling to it. I often found it really frustrating while I was playing it (as you would find any arcade game you’re not very good at) but I still felt compelled to try and try again to beat the level I was stuck on. The campaign levels are only a minute or two long, but I spent fifteen to twenty minutes on some of them.
  • The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and it fits really well with the game.

Neutral:
  • The amount of mileage you get out of this game really depends on how much you like arcade or score-attack games. I like them but I’m also not their biggest fan, so it hasn’t really kept me engaged as much after the first twenty or so levels as it did during those levels. This isn’t really a bad thing, just something I wanted to mention.
  • The game is made with the expectation that you’ll finish the campaign before you touch the endless mode which isn’t great since some of the things you’ll see, quite early in endless even, don’t show up until quite late in the campaign levels so you’ll have certain things show up and you won’t really know what to do with them. A little visual guide as an option which tells you what everything is would be quite helpful, but you can figure it out for yourself pretty quickly
  • There are characters from a few other indie games such as VA-11 HALL-A and Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time. I love VA-11 HALL-A so I really liked being able to play as a character from it but it’s also not the kind of thing that’ll sway your opinion on the game, it’s just a nifty little extra. Worth mentioning though.

Negatives:
  • My main issue with the game is that the difficulty of the campaign missions feels inconsistent. Several times throughout the campaign I got stumped on a level for quite a while and then the next level after that I’d be able to beat in one try. I found this inconsistently really frustrating and it made the game seem less satisfying to me.

Verdict:

Russian Subway Dogs is a good arcade game that looks beautiful and has tight gameplay, its just let down a little bit by a couple of issues. I wasn’t quite as smitten with this game as other players/reviewers have been but if you’re a fan of this style of game then it’s well worth grabbing at full price. Anyone more on the fence should wait for it to go on sale.

Russian Subway Dogs is really silly but the gameplay works. I can tell how much love went into making this game. There's some really interesting mechanics with bears showing up and a crazy hot sauce guy that allows you to shoot fire! The campaign is all about completing tasks that sometimes go against gaining score which is a little weird but not bad. You'll be able to go through a level multiple times to work on the tasks and you need to score above an F for it to count. So expect to replay levels.

There's an endless mode where all the mechanics meet and it has online leaderboards. Which can extend the life of the game.

I've thoroughly enjoyed playing through the game and highly recommend it. It's quirky and fun!

Russian Subway Dogs is a really fun game!

You play as a dog (or as one of the other characters) in the russian Subway and you have to eat food in order to survive. By Barking you scare the people in the subway who then drop their food. As you try to eat food, you also have to make sure that other dogs wont steal your food.

The Game is really fast paced and a lot of fun once you get your head around it! There is tons of different combinations of items that can occur at a time, that make each playthrough unique, despite it always being the same set up. One day you'll find yourself surrounded by fire pooping pidgeons, the other day by poodles that drank coffee. There is so much stuff you can do, to get a better score, that the more you play, you really gain more and more skill.

Next to the endless mode, there is also a really nice Campaign. Each level has different goals that teach you the ins and outs of everything that can happen in the game. Some of these levels are absolutely fun crazy and are so worth to try out!

I can definitely recommend this game. The only downside to this game is that the campaign is a little hard to beat, but the developers are already working on a solution to that. So really, try this game out, you can't go wrong!

Like any other game, Russian Subway Dogs has a balance of positive and negative elements.

Pros
-Success requires mastering a technique known as ‘vodka juggling’.
-Eating hot sauce and drinking coffee give you super powers, just like in real life!
-Miniature poodles are more dangerous than dobermans.
-Elk cannibalism.
-Puns.
-I’m often so busy trying to get new high scores that I forget to eat and starve to death. And in the game!
-Heckin' adorable.

Cons
-Bonus points for eating all your vegetables. What are you, my mom?
-Violence against animals. Also against humans, but no one cares about that.

Seriously, this is my favorite arcade game. Can't stop playing it.

Oh c'mon this is a fantastic arcade game with a ton of charm and meat-on-the-bone. Yeah, the price is off-putting at first, but I assure you this is top quality stuff. There is a solid campaign mode that helps you learn the ropes in steps. There is an endless mode complete with Steam Leaderboards. And lots of awesome unlockable characters that are largely cameos from other indie games. It's surprising how much great diversity they crammed in here. Finally, the pixel art and music couldn't be better.

Essentially, this is an arcade score chaser with a strong-yet-clear set of game mechanics. You are a dog in a Russian subway and you are hungry. You need to steal food to survive. Obviously you can cook said food with explosive vodka that about half the population is carrying around openly. The scoring system just expands from there. Jump to catch food? Extra points. Juggle vodka before cooking? Multiplier. Things like this. And each level in the campaign just keeps adding layers of complexity with characters hanging out in the subway.

Pros:
+The arcade mechanics are well thought out and super fun
+The pixel art and music is fantastic
+The animal cameos from a ton of indie games are oh-so fun
+Very addicting
+Campaign and Endless modes are great

Cons:
-Seems a little pricey for a score chaser, but the quality is absolutely here
-I'd love to have an editor to build my own avatar dog or cat (I know I know this isn't really a 'con', but I can dream)

Well worth full price. You could really get into this one.
