This is one of my favorite games of all time. Yes the platforming can be very annoying until you get the hang of it.

Bought this game on ps vita prior to this and I'm a huge fan of it. Love it for real. I'm a big fan of the lore, the way the knight remarks on how a few areas are bastardized renditions of famous places in the lands, the notes on boss creatures in the beastiary , even the notes left by other players are important. Check bottles left by players, they often let you know where secret areas are or what a boss is weak to or what you need to buff your immunity to. You should definitely pick this up, even if it's not on sale. I've been a big fan of Ska Studios and the team run by their cats since Charlie Murder. So much so I bought the soundtrack to that game on bandcamp and on vinyl. I will forever be fan of their works and how they combine gothic art with amazing gameplay. Keep it up guys.

I'll start this off by saying I am colorblind, so if you are too, then you'll probably want to avoid this game.

I was having an absolute blast with the first area. The combat is fun, varied, and deep. However, the problems come in the second place the game takes you. It's greyish-green backgrounds, with greyish-green platforms, greyish-green enemies, and traps which are, as you can guess, also greyish-green (or possibly red, I am unsure). If you step slowly and cautiously, the game won't let you walk off the platforms. Doing anything at speed or while engaged in combat however becomes extremely frustrating, turning an otherwise fun game into pure trial and error guesswork.

The good news is that after this, the game gets better, just be warned that if you are colorblind, this probably isn't the title for you.

2D Souls game. The only thing I remember not liking was that there was no map. I think I'm better at remembering world layout in 3D than in 2D. As a fix for this, I downloaded an image of the map and put a black layer over it in an image editor and as I explored, I would erase the black layer like a sort of manual fog of war.

IF YOU LIKE SOULS LIKE AND METROIDVANIA GAMES THEN YOU WILL LOVE THIS!!! Challenging, rewarding, just everything you love from those genres. AMAZING. Didnt really get it in description of the game but after playing it I understand. Another game that is close to this is HollowKnight. One of my favs of all time!! But all in all i would recommend this to EVERYONE. Its a must play if you like these genres!!!!

The strange art-style put me off at first.. And for it was one of best examples of 'Dont judge a book...'
The game play is super slick and near perfect in every way. From the animations of the character and the dozens of weapons, to the dynamics of strength having a physical aspect as well as statistics benefits. i.e. when you get stronger you can batter an enemy across the screen.
The map layout takes a bit to get used to as ... I dont think is a map.. and the game is huge so a lot to remember.
I would go as far as to say this is a metroidvania.. I am always hungry for another SOTN and although this game is very different the amount of collectables, weapon variation and beautiful hand-draw art make this a classic in its own right.

It's not hard like dark souls but it's a nice experience for the 5 dollars I paid for it and the 36 hours of playtime I got from my first go of it is quite good compared to the other things 5 dollars will get you. I can't say if it's worth full price but maybe depending on your personal enjoyment.

Pros

+Great combat system
+A variety of weapons to choose from, accompanied by a skill tree that lets you customize your build
+Unlocking shortcuts between previously visited areas makes the world feel more connected
+A decent amount of bosses to fight against
+Several different creeds that you can join, each offering different equipment you can buy and alters the main healing item in some way
+Good amount of replayability with new game plus and build variety

Cons

-Platforming can be finicky and your character sometimes does not grab ledges when they should be able to
-The game could benefit from having a map, especially since areas are large and it can be easy to get lost because areas within the same region can look similar
-A few of the enemies and bosses can be annoying to fight against

Comments
Salt and Sanctuary is a good souls-like metroidvania game that offers a great combat system that has you fighting against a variety of enemies and bosses. While the world is interconnected and it is interesting to find shortcuts to previously visited areas, I think the game could have benefited greatly from having a world map. There were many times when I got lost and I ended up needing to look up a map on a website. This is my biggest complaint with Salt and Sanctuary since areas within the same region sometimes look similar. I still had fun playing the game, but I think I would have enjoyed the game more if there was an in-game world map. Overall, I still recommend taking a look at Salt and Sanctuary if you are into souls-like and metroidvania games.

Beat the game.

+Great builds through the diverse skill tree
+Love the all the bosses
+Loved not having a map in this huge world. Enjoyed having to continually explore and take mental notes while playing to come back once I learned unlocked a new skill.

I enjoyed this game as much as Hollow Knight.

The only souls-like I've played that has captured the same feeling of playing fromsoft games. Salt and Sanctuary is a near perfect metroidvania with souls like combat and incredible platforming. The art style admittedly is not for everyone but I cannot see the game working in any other aesthetic, the enemy design is downright disgusting and sets the tone for many of the areas which are also expertly designed and provoke exploration with interesting rewards and shortcuts opening up upon going off the beaten path.

My only issue with the game is although the platforming is refreshing, smart and fun, having a parkour path from a sanctuary to a boss gets incredibly tedious as you have to play an entire level of Mario in order to get from A to B, only to die at B and have to play it all over again.

Seriously though, if you enjoy fromsoft games, give this game a try.

This game is an absolute Soul's-like treasure. The atmosphere and the lore of the game is deep and compelling as the fighting is difficult and rewarding. I actually bought Salt and Sanctuary because I want to play the sequel after watching a first impressions video but felt compelled to play the this game first. I am very pleasantly surprised by how much I have fallen in love with this game.

I recommend this game as I have enjoyed it very much.

I have played Salt and Sanctuary extensively with my 9 year old daughter Ariadne, as well as casually with my 7 year old son Calchas, braving the monstrous bosses, reviving (spell) my children's characters when falling in battle and laughing about it when victorious at last. I have also played the game with my siblings, on and off, who also enjoy it; fighting together in Salt and Sanctuary is a real pleasure.

I thought it would be just another souls clone but I was pleasantly surprised. It translates the feel of Dark Souls into 2D very well while having some mechanics of its own that I really liked. It has its quirks and it's not perfect, but no major issues.

Recommended.

Great souls-like. Took me about 17 hours to beat for the first time, and it feels like a good length, especially with New game+ and different character classesarchetypes available for replayability.
The artstyle is quite unique, and the bosses are pretty creepy. The combat system might be a little on the simple side in my opinion, but the game felt challenging and not incredibly unfair.
Try if you like the genre or just want to give it a try.

I felt flushed when the Witch of the Lake whipped out her skeleton-clad pincer appendage and spider legs.

Salt and Sanctuary is, despite all of its flaws, a fun and challenging game that combines the genres of Soulslike and Metroidvania. The game is frustrating at points, but never so much that it feels like you've hit a wall.

The soundtrack could have used a little bit more variety. Pretty much every boss uses the same theme and hearing the same guitar riff over and over gets boring really quick.

The character design makes this game feel like a really well done Newgrounds flash game. If this puts you off or makes you feel nostalgic depends on your personal preferences I guess.

Sometimes this game confuses difficulty with being plain annoying, bosses often relay in wide area attacks on the small side scrolling arenas they are given, and the rest are multiple bosses in the same fight which just spam attacks like dumbasses until you are dead. Controls aren´t the best for sure, BUT the graphics are nice, there world feels good to be explored, you´ll often find yourself lost and be invited to keep exploring as you find more abilities to unlock new places. For your first souls-like game this can be a bit frustrating but if you have experience in other souls-like or dark souls itself, most likely you will be coming back just to prove the game wrong that it can defeat you. Stupid game why do I even come back every time?

When a difficult, action RPG (dRPG/souls like) and a Metroidvania love each other very much, sometimes they close their eyes and make a wish - if they're lucky, a Salt and Sanctuary is born.

This game is neither as tightly balanced as a good dRPG, nor as fun to progress through as a Metroidvania. However, the combination of the two genres is enjoyable overall.

You will be frustrated with some poorly balanced bosses, builds, enemies, and areas. If you suck at the game like I do, you won't get your first metroidvania-traversal skill until about 5-6 hours into your first playthrough (or about 4-5 bosses in). You might find the game extremely ugly (like me). BUT If you have fond memories of the first time you played Castlevania: SotN and Darksouls, you'll love 95% of your time spent here.

Originally I got this game in a bundle mostly for the game Dead Cells (the bundle no longer exists on steam unfortunately). This game stayed in my library untouched for a bit until I was looking for something new to play, dived into the game with low expectations

The game was so much better than I had expected. While the grim visual style and asthetic isnt for everyone, I thought it really fit the game and was a pretty cool theme. The game was resonably difficult without being unfair, except for 1 boss near the end of the game which was the worst experience of my life. Enough upgrade/build options to allow multiple different playthroughs. There is also an ascension system after beating the game, but I haven't touched it so can't say much about it.

If the game is on sale and your'e looking at it, give it a try. I feel like this is one of those games where you easily tell if you will like the game or not within the first hour of the game, so should be able to figure out within the steam refund period. 8/10

Salt and Sanctuary is a really really good and challenging game
If you love Soulsborne genre, this game definitely satisfies you as it is just a 2D version of Dark souls, and it does its job pretty well
y'all probably know the drill...I'm just gonna give one quick note:
I played a New Game and an NG+, and tbf the New Game was not a pain in the ass for me...did get stuck on 2-3 bosses and had to retry 'em a few times (definitely talkin about Witch of the lake lol) but other than that bosses were solid for me and not super hard or anything(At least for me)...I still had a lot of fun tho
NG+ tho is a different story and it was harder than i expected
I suggest anybody who picks this game up to play an NG+ run just for the more challenging gameplay it gives compared to New Game
I really recommend this game to everybody and i'm sure if you're patient enough even if you're not that great in these type of games, you will have fun and enjoy playin it

tight controls, combat feels good, parry is very satisfying. i followed a walkthrough to not miss anything. I've never done a strength build in a souls-like but it works extremely well in this game. feels very good to one-shot most enemies with my giant hammer while still having good mobility.

Its a really nice game, co-op is a little odd at times but is very enjoyable, I didn't get to play with others often as it has local co-op and apart from steams odd system of streaming the game for one of your friends to play its hard to get someone to join you if they don't already know and enjoy the game. The visuals are amazing and the music is very fitting. NG+ is a thing and seems to be really encouraged by the game with its massive skill tree. Take your time and enjoy this lovely creation!

This game is such a great value! This is basically Dark Souls in 2D. The combat, enemies, boss fights, skill trees, weapons, classes, everything feels just like Dark Souls. Same kind of messaging system, covenants, magic, armor, weapons, npcs, quests, etc. Instead of bonfires you visit Sanctuaries and instead of getting souls you get salt. This is not a bad thing. They took everything that makes Dark Souls amazing and made it 2D with its own identity. For the price of this game if you enjoy Souls-like games you will absolutely love this game. I have beat it twice and am on my 3rd play through. There is New Game+, so many areas and bosses, parries, tons of diff movesets and weapons, you can duel-wield, cast magic, miracles, fire and lighting, use crossbows and bows, pistols, its amazing. I enjoyed it so much I also purchased it on Nintendo Switch so I can play it on the go. If you enjoy souls like games or games like Deaths Gambit, Hollow Knight, etc definitely buy this game ASAP. Thank me later. I wish they would hurry up and make a Salt & Sanctuary 2 already. I would pre-order that so fast. Come on devs.

So a lot of people compare this to dark souls, and I will have to agree with them a bit. If you played any souls games, you will feel right at home, but the game still brings some original ideas to the table.

Lets start with the presentation. As you can see, the game has this handdrawn artstyle and everything looks bleak and depressing. It fits the game pretty well, but games like these usually have some bright areas for the contrast. This game has none of that, so after a few hours,you realize that everything in the game looks a bit too bland. The models are also a mixed bag, some creatures look really good, but some look ugly as hell. Some also look like they dont belong in the game. This also applies to the bosses. So as far as graphics go, I would say that the game is a mixed bag with some 10/10 art and some 0/10 looking things. The music really surprised me at first, and I will have to say, that the soundtrack is much better than I expeted. It is nowhere near hollow knight level but still really good for an indie game. A lot of the tracks have eletric guitar as the main instrument, which really doesnt fit some locations, but I dont really mind that.

Now about the gameplay. The combat loop is the standart (souls like) hit, roll, wait, repeat, only now in 2d. This presents a number of problems, since now you cant go around someone, or dodge to the side. The game tries to fix this by allowing you to roll through your enemies, but you will notice that it still limits the enemy enounters, so most enemies are just standing in a straight line, waiting for you. The game tries to bring something new to the combat by adding fatique to the game. As you take dmg, your max health will go down. This seems like a fun mehanic, but the game doesnt expand on it, and after earlygame you can just ignore it. The combat isnt anything new, but the main mechanics are pretty solid so as far as that goes, it is pretty good. The real problem the game has is with enemy variety and player scaling. Most enemies have just 1 or 2 attacks. This wouldnt be such a problem with trash enemies, but the bosses arent much better and mostly just have 3 attack they spam over and over. This really hurts the bossfights and most of them are really dull and boring. I killed all boses except for one optional and I seriously cant think of one fight that was engaging. Some were OK and most were just boring. The other problem combat has is the player getting much stronger than the enemies. I played as a mage, and everything just melted before me. There are 5 tiers to every weapon and 4 tiers of magic. I only had a tier 2 staff and a tier 3 spell and the endgame was just really eazy, so I cant even imagine how would it look like if I was geared up. This was so bad, that I basically 2 shot one of the bosses (he was weak to fire magic but still). This is a big problem, since you will probably go through the whole game with some early game weapon with no need to get or try something new. The weapon variaty is also really lacking. There is 1 weapon with 5 tiers for every weapon type, and the difference between tiers is just a stat upgrade.

And for the ending, lets talk about level design. Most loations connect to each other, and you unlock shortcuts between them, which I really like. What I dont like hovewer it the fact that about 1/3 of the game, I had no idea where am I supposed to go, and had to look it up. Some way to guide the players would help a lot, since you can skip whole areas by going down the wrong path, only to realize that you need an item from there to progress. This gets worse as you play, and in the last big area in the game, I had literally no idea where the hell am I supposed to go or what to do. This is also the reason that I skiped one boss, becaused I couldnt find it.

There game also has this creed system, but it doesnt actually affect the game by much so I dont really have anything to say about it. There is also some kind of multiplayer, that I didnt try, since my friends dont play lidl games. The game is also really short and it took my like 9 - 10 hours to beat.

So this is all I have to say. Even tho the review might seem a bit negative, I actually enjoyed most of my time with the game. It just isnt some hidden gem, and has many flaws in design. I wouldnt recommend getting it for full price, but in sale it goes down to about 5 euros, which I think is a fair price for a game like this.

If you enjoy Souls like games then go right ahead. This is a pretty good 2D Souls game that is the right amount of hard.
(+) The world map and levels are amazing. I love how the entire world is connected.
(+) Combat is satisfying and there are many ways to play.
{+} The atmosphere is spooooky and creepy as hell.
(+) Music is nice.
(+) LOTS of bosses and enemies so get ready.
(-) The platforming in this game is an absolute mess. I hated it so much. You WILL die more to gravity than any other boss.
(-) The game punishes you in many ways for just playing the game.
(-) Final boss was glitchy.
Final Score= 8/10.

Ok, so after beating this game I had to write a review about it.Honestly, one of the most fun and best games I've ever playedIt's a Soul Like/Platformer game and it does its job good the art style of this game is very climatic when I played this game I get a Lovecraftian vibe from the art style and bosses the animations are also excellent and fluent as for platforming it can get really
Frustrating, but you can get used to it also the game isn't really that hard to be honest
I mean at the beginning, it can be tough, but as you progress in the game, stuff gets easier I wish only the last boss was harder the soundtrack of this game is also climatic which is why I really like this game it nails everything that it does 5/5 best game I received as a gift

You strands into an island of hell, and there are all kinds of demonic creatures who wants to kill you. 22 bosses to kill and 25 unique regions to explore, full of traps and secrets awaits you. But they are the least of your concerns.
Falling to death will be your highest death rate. And the most fearsome, brutal and powerful enemy in the game is some horde of unicorns charging onto you. Yes, literal unicorns. You'll suffer PTSD of unicorns chasing you after you beat this game, mark my fucking words.

Though I haven't gotten around to actually beating this game, I had a great time playing remote play together with my brother. It's great to have him check ledges for me. I mean, I'M not going to check to see if we can make that jump.

Wonderful game. Captures the dark, foreboding setting of a Souls game with a sailor, drowned seaman twist. The plot is hidden in item descriptions and skill node stories, so if you want to know about it, read as you play or look up a Youtube video. The music is a selling point, simple guitar rifts that are atmospheric and reminiscent of Diablo soundtracks.

Made after Bloodborne and before Dark Souls III, you can expect classic knights and Victorian hunters as you progress through the Metroidvania-Soulslike made to my knowledge mostly by a husband and wife duo. Can't endorse enough.

At first I didn't quite like it, it felt weird and clunky and the art style is odd.
After a couple of hours you get the mindset for the rest of the game.
I love the skill tree, I guess they borrowed the idea from Final Fantasy and Path of Exile.
The combat is pretty simple but effective and the weapons/crafting is great.
The Dark Souls inspiration is clear and they got the right sense for it, doing their own thing,
I suck at platformers, but I managed to beat this game without much trouble. The hardest parts are not that hard if you stop a second to plan or think about it, which is good design.
The game has a ton of content that is easy to miss. You probably will need multiple characters to find out everything.

Hollow Knight is the most similar game to this that I have played. I like HK more, since it is a much more packed and longer game, but I truly hate that in HK you take damage if you get in physical contact with the enemies, which happens all the time. HK is also much more harder than SaS and has a ton o optional crazy hard content.
In short I like the characters, crafting, weapons, skill tree and secrets more in SaS but I like HK a bit more in everything else.
So my advice is to play both, best games of the genre for me.

Pretty good souls-like game, pretty much a combination of Castlevania and Dark Souls. A lot of build variety you can switch/play throughout the game. Hitbox and I-frames are a bit weird sometimes. Gameplay is a little bit slow pace, simply because transitioning between area is quite troublesome if you don't have fast travel NPC/set up fast travel NPC in the sanctuary(which is bonfire in this game).

Greatweapons are pretty busted in NG, which makes every enemy a joke. Take greathammer as an example(which is the strongest hitting weapon class in the game), you can kill most enemies in 1-2 hits, and you can kill bosses around 3 hit with proper buffs(assuming the boss isn't resistance to strike damage).

Recommended if you like souls games and platformer. Also F**K those unicorns.

If you like platformers in the line of castlevania with the atmosphere of dark souls then this game is great. Very replayable. Literally beat this game in one sitting, with minor breaks, I was that hooked. You'll probably die more to the platforming tho so be aware of that.

Pros:
-Prepare to die somewhat
-Rewarding and fun AFTER you learn the game
-Satisfying when you kill an enemy
-Hitting an enemy feels good and meaty(ish?)
-I blazed through 6 hours and didn't even realize it
-The game loves you and shows it by abusing you. You learn to abuse the enemies it throws at you instead
-You can parry. It's exquisite.
-Recognizes xbox/ps4/pc controls(switch visuals of the inputs) and allows you to rebind them
-It has a sense of humor
-It's not EA
-It's 20$, I got it on sale for 5$
Cons:
-Story is bland, but that's the whole point, and it works. So it's really a pro to some and a con to others
-Fun pimp slimes that coat you after jumping the border and a half, poisoning and trapping you in a vicious cycle. Unless you like that kind of thing...
-I’m running out of cons
-You will hate this game in the first 30 minutes. You will love this game after the first hour. Hope you learn fast kid...

You get past the visuals pretty quickly. It's a great game. If you're used to dark souls, it's VERY similar.

Note: You die a LOT easier in this game (1-4 hits max) and gravity kills you quickly so don't worry too much about dying a lot. Also: play without armour :)

This game checks all the boxes for a Souls-like game. Dark atmosphere, a difficulty curve, unbalanced weapons, and glitches.

If you avoid the temptations of using glitches to speedrun the game, it has a nice even pace to it that makes you feel like you are actually progressing. Two-handed weapons are the best weapons in the game, and not a lot of other weapons can really compare. While there is no PvP, the enemy variety is stellar and each area of the game has a unique feel, and usually gimmick, that spices up the gameplay.

Come along Stranger, let me share you my take of wisdom on this game.

If you came here from Dark Souls, for certain you may find this game to be exactly what you're looking for.
If you arrived here by mere coincidence and fate, then perhaps this will prove to be quite the perilous journey for you I'm afraid.

For you Dark Souls players, you may find this game to be right up your alley if you are a fan of the first game.
This will provide you plenty of places to explore, lore, environments, and gameplay.
There are many foes to fight in this game, and all of them respawn. Aside from the bosses, of course.
It has some of the basic functions of every Dark Souls game like Rolling, Parrying, and pile driving your sword or melee weapon right into the skull of your enemy.

I've only played this game for two hours and keep getting my ass handed to me constantly ever since I reached the Woods portion below the Village.
I'm probably going to stop playing this for awhile until the day I grow angry enough to push further into the story which might be sooner than you may think.

Apologies for torturing you with a cringy review on this game, hopefully you can decipher my essay with some mild understanding.

An awesome distillation of Dark Souls in two dimensions with its own distinct athmosphere, mechanics and lore that at times can even superseded its inspiration especially if you're a fan of mertroidvanias.

Heavily recommended to anyone that doesn't mind the challenge of exploring and mastering an island in the grip of darkness.

A game with fun combat and cool bosses that had potential but is sadly overshadowed by poor level design and fall death mechanics. A good example of this poor design is when you transition into a different screen you can't see what awaits you. But, in one particular area of the game, you transition and if you take one step, you fall to your death. This is an unavoidable death the first time you encounter this zone. It has no bearing on player skill and is NOT a fun mechanic. Yet, somehow these are the typical types of deaths you'll experience in this game. For your first play through you can expect approximately 80% of your deaths to come from falls. This game is not for Dark Souls fans as it is primarily a poorly designed platformer. If you like that sort of thing, then this game may be worth buying.

This game is an instant classic. The controls are tight and smooth, graphics are good, gameplay is awesome, and music is on point. Being a huge Dark Souls fan and Metroidvania fan this game had huge appeal to me. The amount of progression means you can either spend time farming to level up or just play straight through. I really can not say enough good things about this game.

As someone who likes souls-like games, and absolutely loves platformers and metroidvanias, I gotta tell you that this game is just unplayable because of inconsistent mechanics. There are random times that you cannot dodge roll through enemies for some reason -and get hit-, and also times that your dodge-roll just simply won't work. The mechanics are inconsistent and far from complete. Other than these issues, the game has quite the potential, but to me, its simply unplayable.

Very cool idea. Unfortunately, it lacks balance in almost every facet of gameplay, from weapons to bosses, etc. For an egregious example, the final boss can glitch you into a wall so you can't move, and commonly enough that it happened to me twice in a row.

This game is frustrating as hell, and if you're bad at souls-like games as am I, you will be drawn deep into this game.

I sat for 5 hours playing, 2.5 of these were spent fighting the first boss. This was my first day: die, die, die, shout obscenities at my monitor, die again, close the game, 20 mins pass, game back on, die again. But my god once i started improving, the next boss fight happens, then its all over again. 6.8/10
