If you played Shenmue 1 & 2, you know what you are getting into. Even after 18 years, it still has clunky dialogue and still plays like the original games. It somehow has charm in that sense, they've added new mini games some good some bad. The ways to make money are enjoyable. Even after two decades, they didn't try to reinvent the characters or change the themes. You're still a young kid with a single goal; you're not a flashy hero changing the world. You're a kid working a job, finding time to train, talk to people, do good deeds, have a bland personality, and it's within a little world that feels real in a way.
For a Shenmue game it's good. If you want more action and side quests, I suggest Yakuza series; I enjoy that game too.

The feeling of doing chores, the stamina system, picking up items. It’s honestly tedious. It’s sad since there were good aspects and parts of the game.

Since I played the previous games, I had the patience to complete this game.

Shenmue 3: how to squander two decades of goodwill in one colossal disappointment.

I really loved Shenmue 1. There's no doubt it's a product of its time, but the game hooked me immediately. The story got straight to the point: dead father, murder mystery, vengeance, go. Along the way, main character and gacha enthusiast Ryo Hazuki befriended a lot of people and was constantly reminded that the path of revenge is not a road on which he can backpedal. The theme was tight, the fighting was fun, and the final battles were thoroughly enjoyable.

Shenmue 2 had a lot more of the same, but it did feel like the rudder was adrift. While there was more fighting, there were also more QTEs and a lot more wandering around, doing nothing. For a concept that started off as a Virtua Fighter RPG, Shenmue already felt like it was getting caught up in all of its sidequests by the sequel.

Shenmue 3, long awaited after almost 20 years since Shenmue 2, is astonishingly bad for one single reason: it is boring. S3 is full of extraneous junk to keep you occupied, but the game never feels like it's getting off the ground. Making it to Bailu Village at the end of S2 was this momentous occasion. S3 starts off with Ryo faffing around in Bailu for nearly 20 hours before he moves on to Niaowu to spend another 20 hours faffing around there. The game wants you to be engaged with all of the things to do, but all of this is entirely optional mini-game garbage that only serves to waste your time. The main game is agonizingly torturous in its pace because, if it didn't throw plot roadblocks at you, you could clear the whole game in well under ten hours.

At this point, Ryo Hazuki is supposed to be an unstoppable force of nature, kickboxing his way through everything and everyone. However, he repeatedly gets his butt handed to him because the plot wants to slow you down so you can take the time to appreciate the pretty skyboxes. He also has to jump through hoops for the world's rudest senior citizens, who are fond of subjecting him to fetch quests in another effort to drag out the story. There's not enough game in the game, and it shows because the game is more padded than a hockey goalie. By the time you make it to the second main area of the game, you have to wonder if you're even getting close to your objective, and since it's never quite clear what you're working toward anyway, the whole endeavor feels like a complete waste of time.

Even more bewildering than the story is the fighting. The first two games had a complex but tight system of arcade-style controls. You could mash buttons and get by, but advanced players were able to chain aggressive combos to put the hurt on enemies. Shenmue 3 does away with all of that in favor of actual button mashing. The game just kind of shrugs and tells you to hope for the best while hitting buttons. You can train Ryo to build up his attack and defense, but bizarrely, Ryo never gains any experience in his stats when engaged in an actual fight. That means the game expects you to waste more time training Ryo so you can survive the scripted fights, and you will spend literal hours training Ryo to improve his stats. All of this happens so that you can get to an end boss battle that concludes with the game admitting it is a filler episode that did nothing to advance the plot, which is just criminal.

It was after I had picked my sixty-ninth plant in Niaowu that I realized I was losing my mind because this simply was not fun. In fact, the game had not been fun for a very long time, possibly ever., and I could not bring myself to finish it. There are plenty of callbacks to familiar characters and places, but it feels like gratuitous wink-and-nod fanservice for the series veterans who wanted something more after waiting nearly two decades for this game. Other games do what S3 does far, far better. The only QTE you need to do for this game is quickly forget about it.

DONT BUY THIS GAME TO PLAY ON THE DECK.

I got this game a while now and i decided to try it, for some reason the game crashed ( 1st time it happened on my deck) and when trying to boot it,it told me the files where corrupted, when i tried to patch it, it screwed my deck up and did not allow me to do anything, even trying to reset froze the deck. Even while uninstalling i had to shut down twice, because it would not uninstall.
Dont say its verified if it does not work

This isn't a game it's a chore.. And I'm saying that as someone who liked the first 2 games. The QTE are back and worse than ever. The environment looks like default Unreal Engine and actually not that good. There characters looks cartoony and I kinda like that.

I couldn't be bothered to finish this game. It just feels like a chore whenever I start it.

This is probably the game I have waited for the longest in my life. I knew for the lack of funds it would be underwhelming, I knew it would be ''throwback kinda gameplay''.

This game would have been awesome if it came out more than 15 years ago like it should have.

I feel sad now. Oh Well, Thank you Yu. Nice try.

A very poor follow-up to 2 masterpieces of video gaming. If Shenmue 4 is ever made i hope Yu Suzuki has no influence other than the story. This game is boring, gameplay is not rewarding, combat is terrible and it barely advances the story at all.

I played the original game on Dreamcast when it came out. It's still one of my favourite games of all time. Although Shenmue III is quite a pleasant visual experience, I didn't like the locations very much. The first location, which is a village, feels like it belongs in a Zelda game and the second one doesn't feel like a real town. More like a tourist resort. It has this unreal, Disney-esque feeling to it. There are no normal apartment buildings or streets. All the houses look like temples or pavillions. The fighting system is pretty OK, but I wish the controls felt more snappy.

If you played the original days back in the day, you'll probably have a good time with this, but don't expect to get blown away like you probably were by Shenmue I back in the day. I hope that we will be able to visit Dobuita or other locations in Japan in the sequel. Let's hope we don't have to wait 20 years for it.

This is the video game equivalent of season 8 of Game Of Thrones. How to destroy decades of goodwill from fans in one game.

There are no dialogue options, the combat system is now stats based rather than skill based and there are no throws, the story seems to have been forgotten, it's tedious, and expect literal HOURS of grinding by pressing one button... over and over and over.

The firs two games are dated but still hold up. This one does not.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. THOROUGHLY. I do genuinely hope that Shenmue 4 will be a reality but I still have to post this as a negative review due to a few key factors. Firstly, this was a chance for Yu Suzuki to modernize the Shenmue slice of life formula and build newer systems into the game engine. Instead they chose to go for a retro style game with modern graphics.

The upside to that is lovers of the old games get a sense of nostalgia as it feels like playing Shenmue 2 remade for the new age but with clunky old systems and the jank that we all know and love. The downside is that there overall ethos of development has left the franchise is a state of stagnation, stuck in 1998.

Secondly, the timed exclusive deals with Epic game store crippled the reception of the game just like other titles that choose to go the Epic games route

Thirdly, the old formula meant that there was a lot of busy work and tedium baked into the story beats. Locking out progress in areas due to not having X amount of money or X item without prior warning plus requiring a long grind to obtain said money or item means that the game had areas in which it grinded to a hault and forced you to do things you didn't really want to do to continue. Such soft locks are present in many games as ways to pad out play time and I hate it.

Shenmue 4 please. Make Shenmue great again.

It's rather unplayable without some sort of nostalgic commitment.

- The dialogs and voice acting are terible,
- graphics and models are 2000's
- the mechanics are counter intuitive and unpolished

I didn't dwell deep into the story so I can't tell much about it, but my initial feeling is that it doesn't make up for the rest of the experience.

Highly recommend this game. However!!! You need a game controller like an xbox controller, to play this game without problems on a windows or hp laptop. The game is very fiddly if you play via keyboard only, and difficult to get high scores for martial arts matches if you just use computer keyboard keys.

Pros:
- lovingly detailed art animation

- magnificent music

- excellent voice acting (most of them aren't from Shenmue 1 and 2, but they are highly skilled)

- open world, interesting and fun side quests, plenty to explore

- likeable and interesting characters that are realistic and well written.

- a deeply moving and engaging storyline.

Cons:

- not many cons, but you are virtually stuck without a game controller if you play on a laptop. Not just for fights, but for buying food and collecting herbs. I can't make Ryou buy food or collect herbs without a game controller.

- To avoid getting stuck at the beginning where Ryou has to see the Flower, wind, bird and moon bookie in Bailu village, buy the tokens first when you speak to the bookies there in the morning, before finding the flower, wind, bird and moon bookie at night. Otherwise, you'll be stuck.

- you need to make sure Ryou constantly eats and constantly works so he doesn't faint from fatigue, and make sure he doesn't run out of money. I prefer the game play in Shenmue 1 and 2 where he doesn't have to worry about eating all the time or running out of money.

- an instant travel option to important destinations and instant save option (no matter where Ryou is) would be nice.

Warmly recommend playing this game. 4 and a half stars out of five!

No matter what, it's still amazing to get to play Shenmue again over 15 years later. Happy I was among the backers, just for the story of the game itself. I love Shenmue I & II so much that I own several Dreamcasts of different regions just to play these games. Although, now it's more convenient to play on PC than Dreamcast! Shenmue III is definitely a must for any fan nostalgic of the first 2 games of the series. New players might enjoy it too, even though the open world/detective/martial arts type of game might not be to everyone's taste.
Still a big fan, still hoping for more. #ShenmueLives

Momentarily kneeless child simulator.

Martial arts expert, but;
- Can't jump
- Can't climb
- Ladders aren't part of his vocabulary
- Can't swim
- Can't walk on rocks
- Can't cross fences
- Never sits
- Goes to bed at 9pm
- Sleeps with his shoes on
- Waits for a permission to venture through a new area.

Hmmmm... I see.

Still smarter than Cyberpunk's AI.

It is a huge NO from me.

From the horrible visuals to the terrible mechanics, i cant stand this game, it is basically a walking simulator with 2007 graphics and 2005 gameplay. Every 1 min of walking there is a cutscene, there are no markers in the mini-map, so you're constantly lost in the world and the combat? oh lord it is so unpolished and boring, dont bother trying shenmue, play Yakuza instead.

And the tutorials? Oh lord, they throw you all the mechanics at once at you that is impossible to follow it, even the interface is dated and the key mapping is even worse. Dont bother buying this game at all, a huge PASS.

Even connoisseurs of the first two parts will be a bit sober after taking off their pink glasses. The story is by far not as good as it seemed back then and the gameplay is completely outdated. The fact that Shenmue 3 doesn't come to a conclusion is unforgivable after the long waiting time and the (financial) support of the fans. Players who approach the title without a nostalgia bonus will be annoyed anyway. The grind is pretty hard, the wandering around and the bad dialogues are even harder, but the fact that the game keeps stopping you on purpose is just incredibly frustrating. Hardcore fans can add something to the rating, everyone else can even pull something off.

Such a waste Sega didn't help with Shenmue 3, hype was there when kickstarter was announced, should have gone all in. What's there is a damn miracle considering budget, setting up new studio and learning tools all in 4 years. In many areas rough game, but also great groundwork for a proper sequel, hope all the best for the series (upcoming anime included).

This game had its ups and downs like any other games, but unlike other games the ups where really high and the lows where really low. For the low lows I cannot recommend this game unless you are a Shenmue fan and want to see where the story goes. I can't even recommend Shenmue as a series right now because then the person would eventually get to this game. This game is not so bad that it kills any enjoyment for the franchise. I'm hoping that the fourth one will be so good that I am amble to recommend the series and that the third one will be the black sheep of the family.

I wouldn't really recommend it. It is a maybe if you are a big fan of the past Shenmue games, but compared to other action, adventure, or martial arts games it just doesn't hold up well.

+Environments and music are great
+Recap for story from past Shenmue
+Fully voiced dialogue
+Story potential

-Subpar character models/animations
-Awkward controls, no remapping
-Very slow movement speed
-Running costs HP
-Very slow story pacing
-Frequent invisible walls
-Outdated and finicky save system
-Clunky battles
-Unclear direction

Feels like the old games with a new coat of paint. Same shitty writing and voice acting that I was willing to excuse in earlier titles because of it's age and the fact it was made in japan, but there's absolutely 0 excuse for it to be this bad in 2020.
The game looks like shit. It feels like shit. It is shit.

Really simple graphics nothing fancy. Okay-ish OST true to the original. Gameplay is terribly outdated. It has even missing features in comparison to the original 2 games. Play it if you're Shenmue series fan. Otherwise, I have difficulties recommending this to you in general.

It only took them, what, two decades to make Shenmue III, the intentionally slow middle act in the multi-part poorly-written, poorly-translated epic kung fu quest. It's such a weird game. It's admirable how close it sticks to the original games' design, and while I appreciate that, it also hurts the game quite a bit.

I'm happy the game plays just like Shenmue I + II -- I think that was the right route to take. Where I think this fails is simply down to pacing. Shenmue I and II, despite feeling like archaic products of their time today, were *epic* in design. The settings, the scope, were massive and detailed; the story's peaks and valleys were, while not, you know, technically good, at least diverse and unfathomably ambitious.

It has one major change from previous entries: Combat has been completely redesigned. Most folks are hating on it, but I actually loved the changes. No longer am I just using the same two or three moves over and over to win every fight. Enemies getting familiar with your tactics means you have to learn -- really memorize -- new moves and plan your fights dynamically. Those skills being weak without training means you have to go to the dojos and train. It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction.

Shenmue III still plays and 'feels' the same, but it doesn't share the prequels' ambitions. Reviews that bring up the lack of progression aren't kidding. Despite the game being just as long (or longer) than Shenmue II, there are only three regions to explore, and the quality is all over the place.

Bailu Village, the opening chapter, is my favorite, and it felt like the perfect continuation of Shenmue II's ending. The quests, the look, the pacing, are all exactly what I wanted from a sequel. (This makes sense, as apparently Shenmue II's ending was meant to be the opening of Shenmue III.)

Niaowu, the second chapter, is beautiful to explore and full of *so much detail* it's awe-inspiring. The environmental detail surpasses any of the previous games, and it's still a comfort to end every day talking to Shenhua -- but: The quests take a dramatic dip in quality here. Everything is transparently a fetch quest, and you just spend every day jogging to the same 5 or so locations throughout the city, which highlights how poorly designed the city is at the coarsest scale (i.e., just large corridors connecting to one another).

And the castle. The closing chapter is incomplete. It's a single linear corridor that slams a bunch of story twists at you which otherwise feel disconnected from the Bailu village and Biaowu story progression (or lackthereof). It has the most awkward, bewildering fetch quest squished into the start of it.

It's great seeing Shenhua and Ren again in HD. It's great hearing Ryo's wooden voice-acting hammering out the hammiest lines again. It's great to explore a relic of 2000-era game design, even if it doesn't quite live up to the past. Still, I can easily recommend this to fans and still hope we see a Shenmue 4 some day soon. :)

This game did not get a fair shake upon release. This is a worthy sequel to the first two games, but some design choices don't hold up so well. Once you get past the first few hours of this game, it really does open up into the series many of us know and love. I'm not really a fan of how the combat is revamped, it seems gimped in comparison to the first two games. I'd say overall this game isn't quite as good as shenmue 2 but it has a lot of necessary world building to this series that couldn't be missed. I think this game gets dogged on so much because of how long it took to come out. Had it come out a few years after two. I think reception would have been much better. I just hope Shenmue IV doesn't take another 20 years to come out. So yes, I recommend this.

A Marital Arts focused game with no grappling or throws... Shenmue 1/2 had no issues with this, Devs have blamed it on engine limitations which is utter bs seeing how it's on the Unreal Engine....

Now fighting in Shenmue III boils down to button mashing compared to the previous games which used the Virtua Fighter system.

Shenmue III unfortunately fails to even match it's predecessor despite modern game development practices and technology.

I don't see the point of playing any more than an hour of this game if it can't even get the most basic of it's core themes such as it's fighting system to be fun.

I'm a little late to the party on the PC version, I did finish the console version though along with the DLC.
I also wasn't affected by the EGS 12 months exclusivity deal (I backed a physical PS4 copy) and I bought it on EGS at release and I bought it on here too.
I am a huge Shenmue fan and have been since the original release on Dreamcast, which I still own along with both 1 & 2.
It is easy to recommend this game to a die hard like myself that was just looking for more Shenmue, however it is not without fault.

The good...

Everything you expect from Shenmue is here, good looking locations, great soundtrack and tons of things to do.
The training system is really good and feels like more than just an after thought like in the first, you will find fighting gets easier the more you train. There is loads of moves to learn and collect and there is plenty of opportunity to use them unlike the first two games (I loved em but there wasn't too many fights in em) so there is a reason to collect them and see what works best for you.
There are plenty of mini games like fishing and arcade games to keep you busy, just like there has been in the originals.
All characters and npc's have that Shenmue quirky look to them, all the interaction we know an love is still here and the game is stunning to look at.
Pretty much a love letter to the 90's and Shenmue from the modern era.

The bad...

The story is just flat out pointless.
The plot moved about an inch in a game I waited 18 years for, and it all feels very rinse and repeat. The first two broke up
the grind with story but this one can not because the story wasn't there to do so...
The story DLC feels like it was stripped to be sold back to us, mostly because it plays like it was.
The dialogue is honestly worse than the first game, broken replies that make no sense and the pronunciation is really annoying (Chi is Che...)
The combat is just a mess, input lag on all moves and combos. The block system is broken and no counters, throws or parrying of any kind.
For anyone with an ultrawide monitor, there is no support for ultrawide of any kind. You will need a mod to do so and you will also only be able to run at borderless windowed mode when the mod is used.

If like me you are a big Shenmue fan, get the third one. There is enough good to out weigh the bad but get the DLC story pack because that was definitely meant to be part of the main story...
And for newcomers, there is a story recap for those that haven't played the first two games.
But If I was new to the series I would wait on a sale if you are unsure.
For a game that was always big on story to sell it, this one just doesn't progress enough to recommend newcomers at full price.

Ok..Im halfway tru ..Now in Niaowu...
So Better than 1 and 2....is the graphic and some interesting minigames...and all the characters in bailu have proper chinese names...
The rests are basically way below par.
1) Story way to plan and dragging....all you do in bailu is just try to find shenhua father and fight 2 thugs...which take a very hugh turn to do so.
2) Why? force us to run a long long long way and faces all kind of blockage to go to Bailu...skip there and on with the story.
3) No Sense...Bailu is a remote village, yet you have all kind of shop and games, better than langhuishan. When raining, everyone just act normal. 2 people stand guard at the bridge try to protect the village while they do nothing to do thugs that are messing inside the village, No one care about the thugs harming the villagers...and even reluctant to help Ryo in defeating the thugs,,,
4) No real urgency? When something serious happen and its pass 7pm...Ryo well just head home and attend the matter very next day.
5) Shenhua is AI? Alien? or Evil? basically motionless...abit of cruel and having kind of secret dark side...Every morning and nite with her is kind of like Dejavu..Ryo, its morning, ryo take care, see you later, you have a good rest???? bla bla bla...Trust me....there is seriously something wrong with this Shenhua compare to the Shenmue 2. Shenhua in 2 very passionate in saving the deer, and this one is cold, calm and .........dark....
5) oh ya...forget to mention the control...where you cant change the key binding...and porting to PC...you dont know what button to press...at some points...make me very very very annoying, angry and stressful...almost quit halfway...

I believe this will be the end of the series....dont worry,,,,go for yakuza...
more fun......
way more fun...

as for this ...still ok to pass time...
not ok to waste a lot of time...

I've only played 2hrs so far. And I get it, it wasn't as mind blowing graphics as in 1999, but that's not what this is about. This is about the feel, the feel of shenmue. Even the american voice acting is just as crummy as it was in 99', the basics of the game are the same. . . But here's the thing - it's Shenmue. It really is Shenmue. The story is back, the attitude, the overall mechanics of how it was for Shenmue 1 and 2 (on Dreamcast. Both of them).

I have waited 20 years. I did not back this game on Kickstarter because I didnt believe it to be real, just another pipe dream - but it came out, it wasn't AAA, but it was Shenmue - and it's the best they could do for the fans with the finance they had. And that's amazing.

If Yu Suzuki wants to upgrade the fan base from new players, do a remake (not a re-master) but a remake of Shenmue 1. If it sells well, use the profits for a remake of Shenmue 2.

Thank you Yu Suzuki. I have waited a very long time to finally play this. I was one of the original people who bought Shenmue 1 on Dreamcast. Thank you so much. I am not even far into the game, but everything is as it should be. Please commence work on the next instalment. Visually, the game is beautiful. A stark contrast to the city of Shenmue 1. I think you have created a nice balance between the playable areas between Shenmue 1 and 2. Shenmue 2 felt to large for a balanced progress. The addition of shuttin off areas when you have no business to move too far away from a current objective was a very smart move. I hope someone sees this review and informs you of the success you have achieved with this. Justice has been served in the legacy of the Shenmue story with this game. I am taking my time slowly through the game to ensure I enjoy it to its full potential. Bravo Sir.

It pains me... Really. As a big fan from the Dreamcast era, it pains me to give this game a thumbs down.
Where to begin ?

The goods: Visuals and music, everything else is fecal matter, period.

This game has his gameplay mechanics stuck in the past and the one that was good was removed : Combat. They manage to make it worse by adding some elements burdening the game even more : Hunger.

This game is for you If you like :

- Opening at a slow pace a lot of drawers and cup boards
- FedEx quest
- Boring minigames
- Wonky dialogues
- Uninteresting combat system.

3 hours, I gave three hours and it was all that it took for this game to spurts all of his weaknesses and make me quit the game. No more nostalgia, just utter boredom stirred with a lot of disappointment.

And what about the story ? I watched a story recap on youtube. It was fecal matter, no progression on the story.

Fuck this world, Shenmue is dead.

This game is currently in the Humble Bundle for April 2021. If you are interested in the game and it's before May 4th, 2021, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

After an playing an hour to review for the Humble Choice April 2021 Bundle:

I don’t like what I’ve seen of Shenmue 3. Whether it’s cutscenes that have entirely too many cuts in the middle of them, a story that feels elongated, such as coming up with reasons to fight, rather than just fighting thugs or combat that is almost a button masher.

I know there’s a strong fanbase for this series, and I’m sure this is the style of game that was made for the Dreamcast and Xbox, and if this is what you want, that’s ok. I get nostalgia, but for everyone else, I don’t think they’ll be able to see the charm as this game feels rough.

Add in rough English voice acting, frustrating controls, and a menu system that feels inadequate and you get a game that probably should have been released two decades ago if at all.

Pick this up if you want a sequel to Shenmue 1 and 2 that is very similar. But I also think if you want that, you probably already have it. I get why there’s a fandom for this game, but this is far rougher than I thought it could be.

As a fan of the first two games, this one is really disappointing
- bad battle system
- poor history
- the game itself is very short, but it keeps putting you in situations where you have to grind for money which makes it extremely boring and time consuming.

The only positive of this game is the graphics.

Spent a lot of time laughing my butt off at the broken dialogue and chopped up cut scenes

Having to eat now in order to have stamina is pretty dumb and makes this game a tedious experience.

Drawer opening simulator!!!!

Combat is boring and no longer fun. You have to train in these really lazy mini games in order to cheese your way through. Skills are meaningless. Just level up and you'll power through; once you've exhausted through the grind that is.

The story starts off good, but gets incredibly dull and boring once you get to Niaowu.... also the frustrating part of having to beat almost all the dojo masters to get one move that you're only gonna use in mission specific QTEs is ridiculous!
and whose bright idea was it to have a time limit ingame, to get a halfway decent ending? the game is so beautiful with tonnes of stuff to do, but the lingering feeling that you're gonna be screwed if you dont get to a certain point in the story before the time limit is what makes you ignore most of it.....
so, overall. SCREW THIS GAME and SCREW the Reverse Body Check!

This is a wonderful game, and one which we never thought we would see. It absolutely feels like Shenmue, completely immersing you in its environment, and the experience that Yu Suzuki and team were able to achieve on such a tight budget has far exceeded my own expectations.

The locations are gorgeous – so much so that you'll find yourself stopping just to stare at them. It's rare to see colours in games matching what we see in the nature around Bailu/Hakkason, and the beautiful architecture and lighting at every time of day in Niaowu/Chobo is a sight to behold. The choreography of the martial arts scenes and the main character models themselves are seriously impressive, taking Shenmue right into the modern era. The extent of the areas also goes beyond what I imagined – they're large in size, and every nook can be explored and examined just as in the original games.

With 20 years having passed since the originals, it's such a joy to spend time with the characters again and see the next chapter in the story. We get to know Shenhua and her history, see Ryo reach his next level in martial arts, and can even call friends from the original games from the hotel in Niaowu. There are a lot of funny, quirky moments, as well as some deeper ones, and many fun new characters. I would have loved to see the plot taken further, and the sub-stories developed more, but this was a game made on a shoestring. The fact that it exists at all is something of a wonder.

There are faults for sure – the combat system isn't as extensive as in the first games, and the food mechanic can be annoying (though casually browsing shops for gyoza, yaki-tori and steamed buns does bring a certain amount of happy nostalgia for anyone who has been to these kinds of street markets/yatai in real life!). The English dub is no doubt as hilariously (deliberately?) bad as the first games too, but it can easily be switched into soothing Japanese. As a whole the game tows a halfway line between the decades-old Dreamcast gameplay and modern-day expectations, and for me it strikes a good balance.

I think the game serves as a fantastic basis for Shenmue IV, should the developers be able to get the go-ahead. The foundation and engine are all there now, and if the story and depth can be taken to the level that Shenmue II reached after Shenmue I, we're going to be in for a real treat. I'm hopeful that the re-release of the first two games combined with the anime will provide the developers the audience to go all-out next time around, bringing out a release to appeal to a modern crowd, with the fan service not being so necessary in future instalments.

I'm perhaps something of a closet Shenmue mega-fan – it in no small part led to me learning Japanese, living in Japan for several years and even visiting all of the games' locations along the way, from Yokosuka to Dobuita, Wan Chai, Kowloon and Guilin too. Anybody who has spent time around Yangshuo will see how fantastically the southern Chinese countryside has been portrayed here in Shenmue III, and I just can't wait to see what Suzuki-san will do next.

For anyone unfamiliar with the series, I & II are out now as HD remasters, so there is no longer any excuse. Look at them through the lens of the year 2000 releases that they are, and it's easy to see how extraordinary they were for their time. I get that it's niche and obviously not for everyone, but in my opinion their open worlds and story still hold up today. For me there has been nothing like them since that comes close to their level of immersion, but Shenmue III goes quite some way to capturing that same feeling. As fans we should really support and encourage the teams to see the conclusion of this epic adventure.

I wanted to like this game. I really did.

I'm a huge Shenmue fan, from way back in the days of Dreamcast and Xbox. When they remastered 1&2, I played the hell out of them.

When I had to wait a year before Shenmue 3 to launch on PC, I didn't mind. I had waited 18 years, I could wait one more.

But I cannot recommend Shenmue 3 to anyone, fans of the series or not.

The world is fine, and the combat is decent enough, but these things alone are not worth playing the game for. The story is. Well, the Story is about 30 minuets long, stretched over 18-20 hours. There is exactly 1 big reveal in the entire game. Nothing else really happens. It's phoned in, badly written, and poorly executed.

The ending was an utter disappointment. I had no preconceived notions of what I wanted to occur, only hopes of what I was walking into. What I got, was laughable. 20 or so enemies that go down with a single hit, a few easy fights, and a QTE to cap it all off. The ending was utter nonsense, and served no purpose then to stretch the 30 seconds of story into an entire event.

This was the biggest waste of time I've ever put into a game.

2/5. Watch it on Youtube.

Shenmue 3 is a long awaited sequel to a Dreamcast classic. The original games pioneered the open world genre and were ahead of anything else at the time. Many game creators today speak of the influence Shenmue had on their careers.

If you were a fan of the original games then I think you will need to temper your expectations. This game is not a big budget sequel but an indie title made on a limited budget so a lot of compromises had to be made.

To me personally, the Shenmue games were some of the most influencial games of all time but I'm going to say up front that this game or series is not for everyone.

The game is very slow-paced compared to the last one. The overall story doesn't progress much and the story cut scenes are very scarce compared to previous entries.

You can still find and work jobs to earn money. You can improve your martial arts through sparring or training. There are minigames that you can play to win prizes. You can now pick and collect herbs. Collecting full sets of herbs or capsules can be traded in the pawn shops. Gambling to make money faster is again possible.

Some of the new gameplay mechanics like fishing really fit that Shenmue feel. Menial, repetitive tasks that you have to do daily to earn money. Or practicing your martial arts to level up to beat a strong opponent. Being able to change your clothes to customise how you look is also a welcome change.

You will still have to play detective by opening numerous drawers and cupboards and searching rooms. Arcade machines are still present although don't expect to be playing any Sega classics as they've been replaced with original works.

One new mechanic that really should not have been introduced was the energy drain mechanic. You health will deplete gradually and even quicker if you run so you will have to purchase food to replenish it. Basically a survival game mechanic that really just breaks the flow here and had no place being in the game. Fortunately there is a mod available to disable it.

Other issues I have are the technical issues the game has. There are stutters and pop-in sprinkled regularly throughout the game which hampers enjoyment. Framerate also jumps around a lot but will rarely drop below 60 fps if you have a decent rig. Characters can appear and disappear even when they are next to you.

With all the grinding and repetitive tasks that you'll be performing the thing that I find missing from this game is the payoff. In the previous entries there would be lots of repetition too as it's a Shenmue staple but there would always be plenty of payoff from scripted story sequences to QTEs but here it is just lacking. I'm guessing the budget attributed to the lack of cut scenes and set pieces here which is unfortunate.

There are side missions thrown in throughout the game which gives you something extra to do and forces a bit more exploration which is nice.

Visually I think with the budget that they had that they've done a good job. Character models are hit and miss. Some look good whilst others look just strange. Facial animation could use improvement too. Environments are a different story. Some areas do actually look beautiful. Amazing colours and scenery that you sometimes will stop just to look at.

I did my first playthrough on hard and the QTEs were extremely fast and difficult to react to. So I can't imagine what they will be like on the hardest setting.

The music also feels neutered here. Nothing had that epic feel anymore. A lot of tracks are just remixed from older tracks which makes me wonder why they couldn't just use some of the older orchestrated tracks. It's not bad by any means but it did disappoint.

The combat has also taken a step back in this game. Firstly throw moves have been removed completely. Secondly it has been simplified as well. Once you get used to it then it's still enjoyable and as in previous entries one of the highlights of the game but it's a shame that they went backwards here.

Overall I still enjoyed the game despite my many grievances with it. To live up to the expectations set by the other games with the limitations set upon the team with the limited budget would be impossible. I really hope that we get to see the Shenmue series finished someday as it's always deserved more fanfare than it ever received.

If you played the first 2 then hellz yeah, play this one to keep that story rolling.

If you didn't play the first 2, then don't bother.
(Honestly, only a lunatic would jump straight to #3 anyway)

The game doesn't live up to expectations, but it is not as nearly as bad as the detractors claim. There are some flaws with the game, but overall this is a good game.

Super eyepatch wolf did a attack video on the game, that in fact had mistakes in it, so therefore was misinfomation.

A huge disappointment

I was a fan of the original Shenmue games all those years ago. I owned both games on DC and even bought an Xbox to play Shenmue 2 on it. Bought some merchandise and signed up to the ShenmueDojo, etc, etc.

I enjoyed the, at the time, revolutionary world that Yu Suzuki and his team crafted - and while the game wasn't perfect, it was groundbreaking and memorable (in a good way). The story (of both games), well let's just say it wasn't one of the games' strong-points, but it was enjoyable if you didn't overthink it.

Fast-forward nearly 2 decades, to this.

Let me be clear, Shenmue 3 is not a terrible game in itself - it's simply mediocre.

But it's a bewildering disappointment, it's crazy to think that in the near two decades since Shemue 2 was released on Xbox that this Shenmue 3 would be the result. A game delayed 3 times due to development issues and delayed on Steam due to the publishers having so little confidence in the game to sell in sufficient quantity (on PC) that they took a money-hat from Epic rather than sell it on the biggest PC gaming platform.

The good (in no particular order):

It's Shenmue 3 - the game does feel like a Shenmue game (strange that, right?) - but those games were released decades ago and the world has moved on since then.
The world itself - though this has to be qualified, the environments are quality and the game, if you don't focus on the npcs, can look good - but the details, of Shenmue 1 & 2's worlds are missing.
The audio - though plenty of the music is reused.
Fishing - is not a bad addition to the mini-games.
The nostalgia - and a few surprise returns.
Forklifts - enough said.

The bad (in no particular order):

The story/plot - more on that below.
The grind - much (maybe even most) of the time you spend playing Shenmue 3 will be grinding.
The stamina system - whoever dreamt it up needs firing and banning from having any creative input in any game for all eternity - in a game that already moves at a snail's pace, Ryo even has to grind for food to even be able to run.
The combat system - because who wants throws, right? Combat is a massive step back.
The inconsistency of the art direction - from realistic cartoony muscle men to more realistic looking NPCs - it's a stretch to believe that Shenmue 3 had an actual art director, and if they did, that person also needs banning.
The lack of diversity in the mini-games - though tbf, this was presumably due to licensing issues.
The ending - yes, I know I mentioned story/plot but the ending really is terrible.
The wafer-thin characters - yes, Shenmue has never had the greatest character development - but wow, the new characters in Shenmue 3 are so instantly forgettable that you'll pine for characters like Yuan, Tom or Goro.
The cuts - of course, these were presumably beyond the control of YS Net, but in the last act the cut content becomes fairly obvious as you're tasked with a completely incongruous side-mission that makes little sense right before for the final battle.
Yeah, dude let me run your errand - Lan Di can wait.
The lack of set-pieces - yes there are QTEs but they are fewer and less memorable.
The broken dialogue/terrible localisation - crap translations might have been hilarious and forgivable 20 years ago, they're less so now.

So back to the story/plot.

Wow, it's a mess. There's really no other way to describe it. It's as if Shenmue 3 was written by someone who had only a passing knowledge of Shenmue 1 & 2 - perhaps they'd read the synopsis on Wikipedia. As a result, lore is forgotten about, retconned, or simply ignored (even within the same game).

If you exclude the final act, the game can be summed up as simply the quest to learn a move and its reverse form. No joke.

This slog, which will entail you playing countless minigames with unskippable animations, is even thrown right back at you too. Because you know how enjoyable it is to have hours and hours of boring gridning rewarded by being slapped in the face metaphorically.

I don't want to go into too much depth, because of spoilers and I risk boring myself, let alone anyone else. But the game's one big plot twist is meh (and that's kind), and Ryo - wow, this game just destroys him as a character.

The writers must truly hate Ryo. Anything he might have learned about the Wude, and from the many people who helped him along the way in Shenmue 1 & 2, is just completely disregarded in one of the most unintentionally hilarious climaxes I can remember - you'll find yourself laughing AT Ryo, not empathising with him.

EDIT: wow, check out those achievements - imagine the hours of graft that went into those 3 - yes THREE - icons used repeatedly for all 64 achievements.

In a way, it's fitting, for Shenmue 3, that such little effort was put into the achievements.
