Ich liebe Sniper. Das töten aus der Entfernung. Das abwarten, das auskundschaften und das Timing.

Wenn ihr wissen wollt, wie sich ein Sniper fühlt, dann ist es wahrscheinlich gelangweilt.

Wenn ihr aber genauso ein Fable für Scharfschützen wie ich habt, solltet ihr euch sowohl dieses Spiel, als auch den Nachfolger einmal genauer anschaun!

Fun game, and for its time, very good. Surprisingly very long campaign and very well thought out.

Has its bugs, but it is old. Would recommend on sale, but maybe not full price.

Responsible for what is now a major franchise these humble roots have not aged particularly well. Default controls are unintuitive combined with level design that are simplistic to modern standards.

After playing pretty much the entirety of Ice Skating Simulator, I can confidently say it's nothing special. Story wise it's a good play, but getting through the rough controls is almost too much to handle.

Sniper Elite and the following sequels are some of the most satisfying gunplay I have ever experienced. From brutal headshots to realistic approaches on how a sniper would handle being surrounded by enemies, there is a surprisingly wide variety of gunplay options in a game named after a sniper rifle.

Although I would very much recommend one of the later entries in the series where more quality of life improvements were made I think that Sniper Elite is a fine place to start if you are looking for the beginning of the series or if you just enjoy seeing where a popular series originated. Either way you can't go wrong but you can still have a lot of fun!

It is the first game in a series that you would never have thought that Rebellion would make a masterpiece while releasing it.

I know, the game is very old. But I am one of those who think that there are also old ones. I don't know why, these kinds of games make me feel more exciting under the umbrella of the effort given and the fact that they belong to that period.

I recommend you not to play the other games in the series without playing this game.

Very much enjoyed playing the game. Although there are some really annoying issues, like movement drift and some clumsy item cycling, and irritating physics when manoeuvering around obstacles, I still felt I got my money's worth.

This game is unplayably bad. I understand it's because of it's age, but wow it's bad. I don't care about the graphics, the game mechanics are really bad. This game was so terrible I didn't play the sequels for a very long time, but my friends started playing zombie army and that changed my mind. Kudos to the studio for fixing this game because I love rifles and sniping so the later games are pure bliss to play. I recommend skipping number one and just playing the rest of the franchise.

Any money you're thinking of spending on Sniper Elite 1 (SE1) is better spent on later sequels. The story is always good enough to compliment the focus on sniper rifle mechanics that always seem to improve. Because the genre lives and dies on its mechanics, story or setting are just not enough to encourage people to play it. SE1 is now considered a frustrating mess of a shooter that only exists to display the elements of potential that this game displays in hard to notice ways. AI is great. Story is unique. I even like the throwback to the level design - very much reminiscent of the heyday of older Medal of Honor games. At best, this is what the game is - nostalgia bait for people wondering how they got to where they are now from life at around the time of that game's release.

Shooting mechanics and combat are woefully limited to the tech of the time, and felt a little too repetitive throughout its 8+ hour campaign. The repetition wears down on the player when they have to consider how awkward movement can be. They based the movement on 30fps (which is a low standard on any modern PC in the last 10 years), so it feels like you're skating through levels. Enemy AI is responsive and sporadic in its combat tactics. Pretty cool for 2005, but not so cool when they know exactly where you are even after firing a shot from hundreds of metres away. Stealth and stealth kills are only ever mentioned by close range silenced pistol kills and slowly proning around guestimates of the enemy's vision cone.

Aside from that, it's a challenging and repetitive slog that shouldn't have to be endured in 2021. You can respect where the game has come from to where it is today (as well as the countless games it has influenced), but there are some good reasons as to why Rebellion opted to remaster the second game instead of the first - it is simply too far gone from where it is to be worth playing today.

DIsclaimer: This is gonna be a fairly long review, so anyone who's not interested in reading a wall of text can just skip it

Another game I got into fairly recently because I thought the premise of being a sniper and having realistic ballistics in a game would be an interesting twist in comparison with most games I've played in my life. Now, I've put 44 hours so far into this game and I've seen all of its good and bad sides. I will recommend it, but I'm also gonna mention some fatal flaws that are plaguing this game.

Like most older games, the movement is pretty janky. Sprinting feels fine, but turning while sprinting feels very odd. It's like the character slips on ice for a second or two when you're changing direction. I guess they wanted to make the running realistic as well, but they kinda messed up. Another huge flaw with sprinting is if you touch any sort of solid object, you'll get 'superglued' to it temporarily, so the best strategy is to run and slow down while turning to avoid those moments. They can be more painful than you'd expect. Crouching and crawling is fine, although your character will sometimes start teabagging aggressively while crouched and pressed up against a car or wall or something else. Crawling is the best way to avoid some enemy fire.

As far as environments go, they are pretty repetitive, The thing I liked about them is that there's a decent amount of derelict buildings that you can enter and use as vantage or recon points or simply to lure some enemies into a few tripwire grenades. Besides the generic streets, you'll visit a subway station, a camp, a heavy water plant and so on. Nothing spectacular, but there's enough variation.

Guns feel fine. You'll use 3 different types of sniper rifles throughout the game which unfortunately don't have much difference between one another, the biggest being having a better scope which allows you to aim farther. In fact, I don't even know if there is any other major difference between them. Some smaller changes include the scope being either circular or rectangular and your stamina gauge changing place. The best part of using the snipers is of course the kill cam. I dunno how to explain it, but those slo-mo shots and blood splatters still feel satisfying to watch after you've successfully lined up a shot. Other guns include standard automatic rifles which have quite a bit of spread, LMGs which are much more dangerous in the hands of your enemies than yours, you have your 'trusty' silenced pistol with a pathetically small range and weak bullets (which is a given) and then you have other weapons which are a bit less common. The Panzerschreck is the best one out of all of 'em, but unfortunately, it only appears in one mission, and you have only three rockets, so make 'em count. You have your standard frag and stick grenades which function identically, timebombs which are mostly used for specific situations and then you have your tripwire grenades, which can be really fun to use, especially when you figure out what your enemies are up to. Other things include bandages which heal a small portion of your health, medkits which heal you fully, so use them wisely, because they're kinda scarce, a rock which can be used to distract enemies, but that was implemented really badly, so I wouldn't recommend it etc.

Now for the AI, oh boy. The AI in this game is definitely some of the most intelligent I've ever seen, and I've played a decent amount of games. The enemies will go to great lengths to kill you once they acknowledge your presence. That's something that's gonna be a real doozy the first time you play. They are sometimes so smart that it can become annoying. Everything they do seems to be with a purpose, be it covering their allies while they switch positions or pick up an injured ally, or distracting you while another tries to flank you. One thing is for certain: NEVER stay in one position for too long. Chances are you're getting flanked, somebody's about to throw a grenade your way or an enemy sniper might be lining up a shot if he's present. Don't wait for your enemies to come out of cover, because it sometimes feel like they wait really long just so you would look their way while somebody runs up behind you. Listen out for footsteps and enemy call outs, they can help you figure out how close the enemy is. Occasionally the enemies will sometimes act stupid, like just stand or crouch and look around, but that doesn't happen too often, My favourite part were the sniper battles against enemy snipers. It's genuinely fun moving from cover to cover, watching your radar to try and determine where the enemy sniper might be. Since a lot of them are located on tops of buildings and they immediately go and hide after firing off a shot, sometimes it can even take you a bit of time to spot them, but once you do and you manage to shoot them before they shoot you, it feels really gratifying.

Cutscenes are simplistic and short for the most part. They look decent enough, basically in line with the rest of the game. The voice acting is also acceptable, although I will admit that I genuinely dislike the protagonist's performance. Karl is extremely forgettable and his voice actor only amplifies that fact. Literally everyone else from the cast feels like they did a better job.

When it comes to difficulty and stealth, those two elements have been really poorly implemented, Stealth is basically non-existent, because as soon as somebody notices or hears you for even a split second, everyone seems to be immediately alerted. You really have to make an effort to sneak up to enemies without getting noticed because you can only eliminate them with your pistol, which has terrible range as mentioned above, and if you happen to use any other weapon, even if it's really far away from them, they'll still be alerted and for some reason, enemies ALWAYS know exactly where you are as soon as you reveal yourself one way or another. So generally, stealth feels like a pain in the ass, it's high risk and very low reward and the missions that force it upon you can be really frustrating. Luckily there aren't many of them.

As far as difficulty is concerned, this game, like a lot of other products of its time, uses really cheap tactics that don't make your playing experience more challenging, but simply just annoying, unfair and utterly unrealistic. Even after all this time, I'm still never completely sure which factor is gonna affect my shot. Even if you're really patient, that's not a 100% guarantee. And those same enemies, who are genuinely really smart and tactical, become absolutely overpowered on harder difficulties, primarily because they can snipe you with their automatic rifles and LMGs. LMG soldiers are so stupidly powerful then that it's completely useless to try and fight them without having some high ground first. You can watch them deplete your health bar in a second from across the map because for some reason their guns stop having spread (again, this game isn't the only offender in this regard, but it's certainly one of the worst). I have no idea why they felt the need to do that, since their programming is already well developed, but I guess they wanted to slap as many difficulties in the game as they could. Unfortunately, they were poorly thought out. If you want to play this game AND still have fun, then you're gonna have to rely on the two lower difficulties.

If you made it this far, then you're really something else. Overall, this game has been pretty fun to go through, even if it has become tiresome at certain parts. Once you learn the quirks of the AI, you'll find that they can be pretty fun to go against while also providing a challenge. The difficulty could have been balanced better and some other aspects could have been implemented with more quality behind them, but in the end, this is one sniping game that's worth going through

Last couple of years I was looking for shooter games with realistic features like bullet drop and so on.
Someone mentioned this game so I gave it a try.
I probably shouldn't, even I knew it was released in 2005.
Maybe it really was a well-built work back then, and I do respect it.
But as someone who just started it in 2021, I had a terrible experience and couldn't even finish the first mission.
The graphics, the movements.. Forget about it.
Try something else.

Best SE Game.

Well Designed Levels, Fair Enemy AI and the interesting situations that occur with You VS Russians VS German Forces create an experience that future SE Games have failed to match.

Where you're constantly searching for ammo and health in the rubble of Berlin and having to be careful in Combat, it's an experience the rest of the series fails to match at all.

This is one of the classics. I enjoyed playing it.
Story is good there is a lot of variation in missions it is not all the same as it is case in some other games.
Gameplay can be frustrating sometimes because of weird running mechanics so you will find yourself stuck at random objects if you run into them because of delay in stoping (it is like running on ice). But everything else was enjoyable. from nice bullet fisics to choosing on stealth or rampage.

I would recomend everyone who is into shooters to try it.

This is one of the most boring games I have ever played. Play either every other Sniper Elite game or any Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 or Contracts (Or maybe even Contracts 2) over this. It has not aged well by the slightest, and the ugly colour palette and overall visuals do not help it.

Game crashing on startup with direct3d error? Stupid right? Ok, you need to set your desktop resolution to 1024 x 768. Then start the game, and you can change the in-game resolution.

Unfortunately youre probably going to have to lower your primary desktop resolution every time you want to play this game. The resolution in-game should remain at what youve changed it to, but this is still annoying about the desktop resolution and hopefully someone will fix it.

The one that began it all. It was still a lot of fun to play today and great retrospective while we wait for the release of Sniper Elite VR. It has some very basic stealth and great sniping mechanics for its time. There is also close quarters combat which works well in certain scenarios. Yes it is rough and has problems - The enemy seem to know where you are all the time as soon as you are detected and run up to you no matter how long you try to hide. But all in all a great first game in the series and a classic for both stealth and combat players.

Normally I don't play these kind of games. Not because I don't like them or they are brutal, no. The simple reason is I'm really bad at them. I don't have the skills or the patience that is sometimes necessary. But I got this on a sale for about 2 € so I thought, why not.

I was surprised it has an HD resolution and all things considered it looks fairly good for a fifteen year old game. Which is a really, really long time when it comes to games. The plus side is you'll have no performance problems. Gameplay is good, you don't have to recognize a bunch of keys or combinations thereof. Which suits my perfectly well. The missions are progressive and the background story weaves everthing together. Of course there is brutality but I never had a problem with it in games. I can set apart game and reality. And if you've a problem with it you wouldn't even consider a game like this anyway so I don't think it's an issue.

I needed twenty-four hours gametime to get through all of it on the lowest level. Everything as easy as possible. Even at that level I had difficulties at times as some missions are very hard while others are a walk in the park. Did I mention I'm bad at these games ? I'll admit I even used a cheat twice because after getting killed for the tenth time in a row I really get angry. And there you have my missing patience.

Recommendation ? Yes, if you like the type of game and are not put off by the aged graphics.
Would I play the successors ? No, but that's just because of my personal preferences. I do like other type of games more.

I wanted give the original sniper elite ago even if it prety old now and graphics are total old school.

And to be fair I not played much but game play is still fun and game stil interesting.

Everything is good about it and I can see why it spawned the next sniper elite games.

Over years the graphics have improved and gameplay become more interesting as well modern videos added.

But this still has the basic gameplay and I found the graphics and setting of first game really fun actually.

I try play more in future. To many games not enough time.

This game is very Important to me becouse this was my first paid CD game I was playing.
I had 8 there.
I remember how I was scared becouse of sound efects like bombs and yelling of people.
i remember Karls face even today.
I never beated that game ikd why but I ended in half.
And first 3 days I was just shooting russians becouse i didnt knew what to do.
The story is just shit about russian bombs but who cares.
I care about shooting, that sound effects, AI, that WW2 maps and guns.
I dont really like that shooting.
Whit sniper its great.
Like to know what line should I aim on scope becouse of gravitation.
But other than sniper is just inaccurate shit.
Like it shouldnt be that inaccurate.
And I hate how you shoot one and other 80 show up.
But no they want show up becouse this game have super engine for hiding enemy.
And its awsome.
All the time you need to chack binoculars becouse you wont just see enemy.
And that is super realistic.
This game is my love and I will give it 8/10.

Solid title and another title to add to the endless pile of WWII games.

Graphically this title has aged and not for the better.

Sound engine is less than ideal.

Story line is generic.

What really sells this title is the idea behind it, you are a sniper sneaking and taking 'the shot' while maintaining stealth, the situations that you encounter are clones (due to the this being historical accounts) to other titles but from a different perspective.

Overall, while this title is good to have, it would be wise to purchase the sequels.

Sniper Elite Review

Good things:

It is the first game in the series and it is a good sniper game. It was a good idea to make camera track the bullet to see where we did hit the enemy. It is also the only game in the series without achievements and collectibles as they were not a part of most games back in the days. Graphic is good for year 2005 but it did not age well. Still this is the game that started the series and it is a good game.The story in the game is great as in my opinion it is nice to see Berlin during the end of war when Nazi are losing the war and it is nice to see that your enemies are Nazi soldiers and Soviet soldiers. This helps you sometimes when the AI is fighting itself so you can wait and kill whoever survived or let them fight each other and sneak past them to do the mission objective. Also in some missions you are dressed as German officer so Nazi soldiers won’t attack you and you can use them to your advantage to take out some Soviet soldiers.I also think AI in this game is great as enemy do different things even if you load the game and do the same thing. Soldier can rush you head on with a pistol or flank you from one side and shot you with a rifle or flank you from the other side and throw a grenade.

Bad things:

The game did not age well. The graphic was ok for year 2005 but right now you can’t play this game in anything higher than 800x600 I think and the graphic make it that enemy soldiers sometimes look like part of car or tank. Clunky character movement is also a problem in this game as if you do anything else than crawling your character moves like he is sliding on ice.I don’t understand why they decided to make a remake of Sniper Elite V2 and not of this one as this one really needs a remake to be much better. I guess it was easier to just add texture packs to already great game like Sniper Elite V2 and release it as a remake instead of making an actual remake from this game.

Conclusion

This is the first game in the series and it was made in 2005 so if you want to scratch some nostalgia itch and are not scared by old outdated graphic and clunky movement this game is for you.

I love to play games in their order.
Even if I could play the newest one, I like to see the evolution of a Franchise and even if some things in this game made me to finish it quickly, I really enjoied it and can promise you, it was an good experience. It's always satisfying if you know where it all began.

I have played Sniper Elite 3 and 4 to their conclusions then went back and found 1 and 2. So far Sniper Elite 1 is the most realistic and least player assisting of any of them. What starts as a clunky, old timey set of visuals soon turns into a very deft, clever and wonderful Sniper Game. I love it! Oct 2020

Sniper Elite is an old game and it really shows. Running around feels very slippery and has a strange delay that makes most input feel awkward. The first mission prompts you with lots of helpful tips but they appear to be random. The visuals are definitely dated but a few long distance headshots spiced that up a little. I got this game on sale because I tried the 2nd one and thought it might be cool to try the original. I played for a few hours but just couldn't find the flow of action or fix the floaty controls. If you decide to give this one a go, do so with low expectations. Game over.

Good things:

It is the first game in the series and it is a good sniper game. It was a good idea to make camera track the bullet to see where we did hit the enemy. It is also the only game in the series without achievements and collectibles as they were not a part of most games back in the days. Graphic is good for year 2005 but it did not age well. Still this is the game that started the series and it is a good game.

This game is awesome! I used to play it on my PS2 and it was really good game on its time.

It's old and clunky, but fun. The enemies pose a challenge and the story is interesting. The game itself can be completed fairly quickly. There are some frustrations one has to accept, but all in all enjoyable.

I would recommend this to players new to the Sniper Elite series. If you want to start the series and fancy completing all the games, start here (or with volume 2). But if you've already played Sniper Elite 3 and/or 4 don't come back to this one. You will likely be disappointed.

Very dated now of course but in the series i grabbed this one first and enjoyed it that much i have since picked up the other titles and played / still play them in release order.
For a cheap game in a sale this is still worth getting to play. If you like what you see and have the funds then jumping straight to #3 is no shame either.

Sniper Elite is the first entry in the long running series of Sniper Elite. All of the games feature some standard first person shooter elements while adding their own sniping related mechanics on top. This entry in the series is easily the roughest around the edges, especially when looking at it through a modern lens. The graphics are dated, the voice acting is terrible, and the plot is mediocre at best. The shooting mechanics are fine for the era, but by today's standards, Sniper Elite does not hold up well. Overall, this is probably the worst Sniper Elite game and you are better off buying any of the other ones. Still, the game isn't awful, and I would recommend it to fans of the series and genre who are willing to look past some of its age related issues.

At first I looked at the store page screenshots to see what the game is like and it didn't look very appealing, but those screenshots don't give the game justice. The game itself has more complex mechanics that they ditched in the sequels, stuff like camouflage index, movement speed that affects the sound you produce(eg. you can still use prone, crouch and standing stance, but in each one you can now choose the speed at which you want to move, they affect your camo index as well as the amount of sound you're making) as well as fast/slow search of bodies, which then yields different items and different amount of items.

There's plenty of missions which mostly consist of multiple parts, but majority isn't all that great, either bland looking or just a filler, there are however few maps that really stand out as well as some missions where you have to stealth otherwise you fail. Forced stealth missions are usually much less packed with enemies and allow you to do them pretty easily, you can also try to stealth almost every mission but that will take more time and effort than those must-stealth ones. The game really gives me the vibe of playing a Hidden & Dangerous game by myself(unlike in a team you get there). Definitely worth it even for full price.

The game has well designed missions.
Artificial intelligence also impresses for the time.
A good stealth game.
The only problem is the bad graphics optimization, which i can't complain to much about, considering the time when the game was developed.

Every franchise has to start with something.
The First Sniper Elite Game was really good.
But nowadays there's no point in playing it.
It's basically worth it only for the nostalgia.
If you've never played it: You Won't Like It.
But it definitely deserves a positive review.
We have the sequels thanks to this game.
And the sequels are really, really amazing.

This is the first time I've tried the most classic version of Sniper Elite series. Goes back to the old days, having it similar to Battlefield 2.

Despite classic in many ways possible, what I got in this game is the most basic system of kill camera, of which for me, I have to skip that out most of the times.

It's a bit rough around the edges, especially the movement which felt like driving in GTA IV. I realize they probable made it like that to discourage run and gunning but I feel it made it unnecessarily diffficult to move around efficiently.

Despite a couple of grievances here and there I quite enjoyed it. Nothing's more satisfying than landing a visceral headshot from 200 meters away!
