Über das Spiel

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: The Surgeon General was brutally murdered by STRAFE.

STRAFE is a roguelike first-person shooter pushing the limits of computer-generated photorealism and hardcore sci-fi action into unimaginable territory.

With virtually no load times and infinite replayability, just choose your gun and be instantly blown away by:

FACE MELTING SPEED! The blazing fast action will hit you like the blast wave of a 50 megaton thermonuclear warhead, liquefying your skin cells and rupturing your internal organs. Yet still leave you coming back for more.

PERMANENT DAMAGE AND GIBS! ÜBER-GORE® technology means enemies explode with near never-ending fountains of blood, which never fades away. Create wicked works of death art that mark your explored territory from the unventured.

ENDLESS CHANGING LEVELS! Randomly-generated levels are always different and violently unpredictable. Rooms, enemies, power ups, monster closets, and secrets move around every time you die and die and die and die!

As a Scrapper on a impossibly dangerous mission at the edge of the galaxy, you only have one life to navigate all the nightmarish terrains of STRAFE®. When you die, nothing will ever be the same again.

The game has become pretty good since it's release, reminds me of Risk of Rain 2 in a way, but with a more linear/seamless level progression, and more focus on player's reflexes rather than character skills and upgrades (even though the latter still can influence the run in their own ways). Also, the soundtrack is awesome.

Recommend.

There are many things this game does extremely well. The art style is a crazy blend of original Doom, Quake and Half Life all rolled into one.

The gibbing in this game is extreme. Body parts can be blown off, smacking into walls leaving splatter marks that slowly works their way down the wall. Enemies missing limbs have blood jets shoot out of their body. Explosions make enemies into blood filled meat bags that spray everywhere.

The enemy roster is a variety bag of silly, creepy, and everything inbetween.

This game borrows a lot from other games in what I consider an act of love and admiration for the games of old that paved the way for future generations.

There are many hidden gameplay elements that reveal themselves over time.

Level design at times is really fantastic.

I wish the game played out a bit different. In this case I wish the team had just gone all in linear and spent time making bigger maps that explored the world in more meaningful ways. Some of the map reveals are just plain awesome and I would have preferred to continue experiencing the game like a classic FPS. That said, the rogue elements are not bad. They just don't feel like the direction I would have liked considering the talent of the mappers involved in this game.

If you have a passion for FPS, in particular if you started at the beginning during the Wolfenstein era, I recommend picking this up.

I beat the boss on standard mode at review time. Took about six tries to finish it. At that point new difficulty is unlocked. I don't think I'll be back to go through on other difficulties, but the game was worth the play through to me.

EDIT: Went through and played on the next difficulty. It was worth it.

Really fun, very fast paced levels, movement and shooting feels great, only critique is that sometimes the levels feel too closed in to jump and maneuver around enemies, other than that worth the $5 i paid for it on sale.

This is an incredibly frustrating game to like.

On one hand I love the foundation of STRAFE; the movement is great, the shooting is punchy, and playing through the levels, dodging around enemies and going back and forth with them as all the different levels dynamically transition into the next is so much fun. The music is great, and I actually enjoy the aesthetic and attitude of the game. I can totally deal with some more glaring issues if the game itself is just a joy to play.

On the other hand, even with the developers making a bunch of patches and major gameplay updates, I would say at least one in four runs end due to some sort of bug/softlock, whether that be the consistently buggy final boss's homing rocket turrets continuing to fire even after being destroyed, or getting stuck in a train during a level transition, or--the specific incident that broke me--a super rare easter egg room overwriting the normal level generator and softlocking me in the first area of the zone.

For most of these, if STRAFE were any other FPS--say, Dusk or Doom, I would just load a save and hope it didn't happen again. But since STRAFE is a roguelite with permadeath and no quicksaves, I don't have that commodity. That essentially means that no matter what I do or how well I play, there is always a non-zero chance that something completely out of my control will go wrong that either softlocks me or ends my run by no fault of my own, losing 20-40 minutes of progress. As much as I like other aspects of the game, I don't play video games to have my time wasted.

That's not even to mention that for a roguelite this game is super easy to clear. If you're comfortable with retro shooter style games, you'll have no problem with this one as long as you can dodge projectiles and know the weird quirk with reloading that STRAFE has. Within only a few hours of getting the game I was able to complete multiple runs with all three primary weapons on first go. For the five dollars I got STRAFE for, that would be okay, but for the full asking price of fifteen dollars that is criminal. One of the best parts of roguelites for me is learning the game over multiple runs to know what works best and apply that lesson. Here, in just one run I learned immediately!

And no, I have very little interest in the postgame mutators (gameplay modifiers you can select in your ship, like big head mode or one that gives you and every enemy rockets.) Any of the mutators that change the game in any major way seem to bring even greater chances of game-breakage than normal. The Rocket Arena mutator is a great example of this--the map didn't work, the item menu didn't work, and I almost had yet another softlock end a run because my weapon swap bugged while doing one of the secret minigames and I was stuck in a loadzone until I magically unstuck myself, because weapon swap is super broken in Rocket Arena.

I want to love STRAFE so bad. All the pieces are there and the developers are clearly super passionate about that 90s attitude and style. But those pieces are glued together with vomit mixed in honey and are also halfway wedged in a wall. Maybe more of that 200k Kickstarter money should've went to the final game than a five-minute short film?

UPDATE: So I relented to what I liked about this game and played a little more. The mutators get increasingly expensive and annoying to play the game with, and the secrets are one-time gags that are neat but just show how much polish didn't go to the main game. Review, unfortunately, stays negative.

Every time i try to play and get a good run going i inevitably hit a game-ruining bug, my first game i was randomly launched through the map and died, and the second time enemies were stuck inside the floor, making it impossible to pass through alarm doors without eating damage (thankfully the second run i had a recharging shield that tanks the damage)

It would be an alright roguelike if the RNG that screws you over wasn't the game code

I want to like this game. The music, art style and mood/humour of the game all appeal to me.
The only problem is the gameplay or certain aspects of it that really stop me from getting immersed and enjoy the gameplay.

The game being a rogue-like means death resets your progress (with some small meta progress if you're lucky), so the goal becomes not to die. This would be fine but the way the game handles encounters, healing and hazards mean you have to choose a more careful and methodical playstyle than the tone of the game implies.

Healing comes so rarely you can't afford to take any damage and the procedural generation makes it hard to plan encounters as you can't know the size of the room or amount of enemies you'll have to dispatch before you can take a break.

There's no reward for charging in guns blazing instead of slow taking out a few enemies at distance and kiting the others while you pick them off.

I was conflicted in deciding which thumb direction to use. I played this for 12 hours and I even enjoyed most of it. The shooting and movement are solid, the enemies are good fodder for shooting, and the graphics are pretty cool looking. But in the end it feels more like a trivial time waster unlike the classic Dooms which I'll use as the golden comparison. The appeal of Doom is as much in level exploration as in the killing of wretched beasts. This game is kinda like a step above Call of Duty in terms of killing for quick rewards. Through your runs in the campaign, you'll unlock coins to unlock game mutators. But now that I've unlocked everything I don't care to play anymore. Doom is still fun because, even despite the plethora of mods and levels created in it, the original levels are well designed and fun to play. The reward is enjoyment in that good level design combined with good mechanics. This game has good mechanics but not enough other stuff for me to recommend. Look, I'm not a professional reviewer so someone else can probably articulate it better but, while I had fun playing this, I just think there are better things you could spend money and time on that have more depth and relies on something more fundamentally rewarding than unlocking new things.

The good: The music is dope, I like the art style.
The bad: Everything should have clicked for this with me. Maybe the rougelite aspect through me off. The movement was fine, maybe Dusk spoiled me. At times I felt like I was drunk or debuffed.

A rougelike retro fps sounds promising, but STRAFE does not deliver. The tutorial is charming and the trailer where the kids head explodes is interesting but thats about it. The guns feel weak, they lack something that made the weapons in classic shooters feel good. Basically nothing is explained, the tutorial tells you how to look, move, jump, pick up shit, and use some machines that youll ocasionally find, ocasionally being the key word here since the game is really stingy with them, (its also stingy with giving you for example ammo) I dont mean explained as in story, i mean explained as in how the game works. I found myself confused countless times in my 3 hours with the game. Besides all that, a retro styled FPS doesnt let me rebind weapons and forces me to use number keys? Bad

Has a lot of potential to be fun, game feel is great, pace is fun, however this game might as well be called Starve because it just refuses to give you ammunition, health, or shields, but has plenty of enemies to throw at you, you might saw the weapon drops are plenty but even those are very random so you cannot really count on these in a pinch. A meele weapon would be fantastic, would love to be able to conserve ammo like that.

It's a fun concept but pushed too hard towards a frustrating difficulty.

I bought this game in steam just to leave a good review. I already have it on Amazon games for buying twitch prime, and played a shit-ton of hours there.
THIS GAME IS FREAKING AWESOME. The guns, movement, enemies - everything works together to bring you the most fun experience that you can get from a single player FPS. Designs are cool and clean. Easter eggs are just spectacular!
And it's not THAT hard. Every person who left the negative review is a little cry-baby.

Git gud, casul.

STRAFE is a game that wants to be like the classic shooters of old, games like DOOM (the original), Wolfenstein, Quake, etc. Its name is even a reference to the classic game Strife. However, it doesn't seem to understand what made those games fun and why some features of old were abandoned for good. My biggest issue is the map, by far. It's very easy to get lost. Again, this is in keeping with the classics, but that doesn't mean it's fun. If I've already killed every enemy in the area, and have the keycard, some way to easily find the door I just opened would be appreciated. I'm not playing an FPS because my life's dream was to be a cartographer, I just want to shoot things. I also feel that in many ways the shotgun, one of my favorite weapons in these sorts of games, was given the cold shoulder. Run and gun is just not incentivized in this game. There's no radar, and audio cues are dodgy at best, so if you rush in it's very easy to get an enemy coming up behind you without you knowing better and taking a chunk off of your very limited health. This is especially exacerbated by the maps, which unlike DOOM feature full 3d with a heavy emphasis on verticality. Given your fairly mediocre movement speed, the game thus generally incentivizes entering new areas slowly, methodically picking off combatants one by one. The addition of acidic enemies, whose blood(?) covers floors and makes walking thereupon painful, also really screws you over in close range combat. A helpful blurb from the game told me that it could apparently be covered by the blood of non-acidic enemies, but I don't think that was once something I managed to do. Regardless, unless something about this particular game piques your interest, it'd be best to pick one of the many similar games that were made with a better grasp of the fundamentals. Every time you start a run, it's some jerk you didn't see and didn't hear immediately behind you who takes off half your shields, every time. Pixel Titans should have stuck with something simpler, but they bit off more than they could chew and the end product is half baked as a result.

Wish I could recommend, because the core game is there and is rock solid. The shooting is satisfying, the enemies varied and a fantastic aesthetic.
However, in its attempt to get to an FPS roguelite, sadly it seems the worst of the genre has been taken and the best somewhat forgotten.
The most obvious example of this is the level generation. It's extremely easy to get lost and to just wander around for 5 or 10 minutes doing nothing but backtracking, getting back to the start, going through the level again, rinse and repeat. From what I can work out, when you clear an area, a door opens. However, finding the door that opened is really quite difficult, they blend into the environment like scenery and with so many interconnecting mazes before you manage to open the door, knowing which one is the latest to open is just a matter of trial and error.
Getting lost is common in RPG roguelites, but the slow pace makes it less of an issue. In Strafe, any moment your not shooting or being shot just doesn't fit.
Aside from that, the level's actually feel quite samey, with enemies always appearing in some form in reappearing segments, and just an overall lack of feeling that the level is truly unique. You also lack much progression aside from some light upgrades, and early game (I assume what I've played of it is just early game) gun variety is alright, but from a game just about guns, feels a bit lacking.

tl:dr; A not great roguelite built on top of an otherwise fantastic feeling fps.

Fun, fast FPS with good nostalgia value. Level design is pseudo random and can get a little confusing sometimes, since so much of it looks alike. Other than that, a great little game. Watch a gameplay trailer and you should immediately know if you'd enjoy it or not.

Decent roguelike FPS with procedurally generated levels, which trying evoke nostalgia with retro aesthetics and bloody shootouts. Game can be fun for a while but my main problem with this game is a lack of substance in all categories. I can only recommend it to people how temper their expectations and understand all its cons.

Pros:
- Awesome gore;
- Decent gunplay;
- Great soundtrack;
- Charming visuals;
- Cool mutators;
- Enemy variety;
- Funny easter eggs;

Cons:
- Bugs and glitches;
- Lack of meaningful progression between runs;
- Bad optimizations;
- Disappointing weapon system;
- Procedurally generated levels are too similar;
- Bad AI;

Played this since it released i was abit on the fence due to difficulty issues. but as the game progressed and updated the game turned into what the game advertises itself as gold edition, additions like mutators and better enemy fairness (and some fun difficult ones) the game is a blast to play through (litteraly and figuratively) as they updates i found the game less and less frustrating scrapping vr for a better experience is probably the best choice they could have made. i hope one day another strafe comes along or an expansion. id gladly pay 20 for a large expansion that builds off of what this game provides.

It is not that.
It is a rougelike where 90% of your gametime will be spent holding S with a coat of retro-FPS paint.
If you want a rougelike, buy this.
If you want a retro FPS, do not buy this.

This game wasn't particularly good at launch and thus didn't receive glowing reviews from critics or fans. The game has since been greatly improved but the majority of reviews are still from the launch which can drive a lot of people off. IMO the game as it is now is fun and easily worth your money at full price. The game's jam packed with secrets and has enough variety to last you a good few runs. It's not Quake but it's still pretty good.

I used to like this game when the Millennium Edition update came out. It did some great balances and fixes to the game.

I hadn't played it in forever and then the Gold Edition update came out, so I was like oh, let's see what they did, the last update was dope, so this one should be doper.

Well, idk what they did, but the levels just feel so empty now and I feel like they messed with how they are put together because they are not fun to navigate. It is just not fun for me to play anymore. I kind of wish there was a way to play the Millennium Edition again.

Despite what its blurbs might tell you, it doesn't have much in common with Quake and its comtemporaries beyond the obvious.

It's janky, randomized, fast, maniacal, blood-soaked shooting with a banger soundtrack, endearingly chunky visuals, variety and self-aware attitude.

Just the way I love it. :)

The arena style combat and gameplay feels nice, and is a great callback to the games of old but i have 4 deaths in the game and all were from suicide. 3 were softlocks where i could not proceed because i had used a one time explosive capsule on the wrong wall and 1 was a softlock where the game had glitched and despawned the area that i had needed to unlock the door making it so when i went to that area i would fall through the non-existent floor and later respawn in the area with the door. The level design in itself is unintuitive. Old games of this style used keycards because with keycards you knew that green card opened green door but what do i do with steel door and a camera on the left side of the door?

Overall gameplay is fun, the guns feel fantastic, the movement is nice but the level design is a horror show of what not to do and completely ruins the game.

If i manage to forget about the fact i softlocked the game 4 times in a row in different ways then i may return to it, if not it is going to sit in my library unplayed for the rest of time.

I like Devolver, so I figured they'd make a really fun FPS game that feels like old-school titles such as Doom and Quake. The difference is... Doom and Quake have the ability to heal yourself after dealing with bullshitty enemy groups that are guaranteed to hit you. I have only found healing items in one single playthrough after 3 hours of gameplay. Those older games also grant you ammo for your guns, letting you actually enjoy having an arsenal. Strafe doesn't really do that either.

You basically have one of three primary weapons that you will be married to for the entire run. Pick up a fun new gun and enjoy 10 whole shots with it. This means that the gameplay can actually get really tedious... really fast. Of the shotgun, assault rifle, and long range rifle, only the shotgun seems to be worth a damn. Machine gun is alright, but the spray means you'll never hit anything. the long rang gun has horrible accuracy, and I've never been able to fix that issue while playing.

Overall, I also think the base difficulty kinda screws the player over a little too much. I didn't play on easy, because the game informed me I wouldn't be getting any progress or anything by choosing it. So... why offer it? Man, this game might be great, but it just handles like crap. playing it just puts me in a bad mood and I won't be getting my money's worth out of this purchase.

STRAFE is the closest thing to a roguelite quake on steam, in my opinion.
Pros:
- Fun game with high replay value thanks to mutators that change how the game behaves
- Satisfying weapons and tons of gibs and blood squirts
- interesting minigames to break up monotony somewhat
- Skill based movement (bunny hopping)
- Fun final boss fight
Cons:
- Can be tough for people unexperienced with quake like movement and weapons
- Level design is procedurally generated and is easy to get lost, minimap is borderline useless
- Perhaps a bit short, ending felt a bit rushed
- Singleplayer only, no pvp

Overall, I think this game is excellent and I would recommend this game to anyone with an interest in roguelikes and fast paced skill based movement games, especially if it's on sale.

An hour of nonstop action shouldn't feel this underwhelming. The enemies aren't interesting, the guns feel weak, the levels aren't interesting enough. This feels like a game-jam project after all these years and has brought NOTHING interesting or new to the table. I typically don't like giving negative reviews, but I can't think of anybody I know that I could earnestly recommend this to, because it feels like a proof of concept instead of a game, and to tell someone that this is worth their money sounds like a prank.

Strafe

The FPS Roguelike that looks like Quake
How is it? It's pretty good but not perfect. I like Strafe, but it does some wrong to me personally and objectively. I'll start with what I notably enjoyed.

What I Liked
The Graphics, Aesthetic, and Atmosphere. It pulls off the old school vibe pretty well. I like the Weapons, mostly the Shotgun and Machine Gun. Shooting feels good enough, same with the Gameplay. The Bunny Hopping being executed amazingly helps with the old school feel. There's lots of little Easter Eggs and Secrets. They also kept updating the game years after release up to the Gold Edition. There's lots to appreciate here.
But What I Don't Like
I just personally feel like Strafe is partially a missed opportunity. Like it's fun when you first beat it, which took me about 4 hours. After that I Achievement Hunted for a bit and played all the other modes just once and that's it, which was overall 7 hours for me. Maybe my expectations were off, but I kinda expected more. Like there was very little motivation to keep playing, which sucks cause I like this game. I wish there were more Achievements or better in game progress to motivate me to keep playing. There can be a lot of Replayability for some people, but not me. Makes me wish this game had better, hand-made levels and a Campaign. Maybe even if this game was a RogueLite instead of RogueLike for longterm upgrades. The pros still outweigh the cons.

Overall
Strafe is more a Roguelike FPS rather than a Old School Shooter. It looks like Quake but definitely doesn't play like it, and we shouldn't expect it to. I appreciate Strafe for what it is, but it didn't hold my attention for very long. I personally really like FPS Roguelites and had to try this game. It was still pretty fun. Get this on sale. I'd mostly recommend it for Roguelike fans and Old School Shooter fans who are curious.

Don't get this game it's not very good the guns aren't very good any weapons you do pick up you can't even get ammo for them, soundtrack isn't too good either so if you want the Quake feeling buy Dusk instead more fun and plays like a quake game and also has an awesome soundtrack to it or if you want a FPS Rouge-like game go play Immortal Redneck instead it does everything this game tried to do save for the Quake and Sci-fi stuff

I tried this game shortly after release, dropped it quickly, and now tried it a bit longer for the recent Gold-update. I really tried to like it, but I can't recommend it to people.
To keep it short, it feels kinda lacking in a lot of detail areas. The gameplay loop is decent, but a lot of small things are lacking that shouldn't be, and it makes it mundane quite quickly. It seems to be a lot of style over function, a lot of possibilities are there, but in the end it seems to be purposefully made too simple. This flows throughout the game, a lot of features, enemies, sounds, graphics, mechanics and more just feel barely done. Where they would have needed much more love and it would have felt like a good product. Just saying, if you are an arena shooter or twitch-shooter fan, and expect this to be just that but as a rougelike, you will most likely be disappointed. It only looks that way on the surface, and resembles more a arcade rougelike version of Doom. Not talking about all that I think the game lacks, but one of the bigger issues I have to mention: it crashes very often as well. If you really want to play it, buy it on a cheap sale.

Strafe is ... unique. It does keep things fresh, with a good progression. I just don't know where I am, or where I'm headed. It's a gem of a 90's game made with modern senses of scale and depth.

Honestly quite impressed with this game. I've been a fan of roguelites for a while, but this is my first FPS roguelite and I'm having a blast. Love the retro visuals and gameplay. I feel like this will take me a while to beat, but I'm looking forward to the journey there.

Strafe is very much a hidden gem.
Old school graphics, old school shooter. The game oozes pixel art, The sound as well, very midi style and very catchy.

The gameplay itself is not easy at first. But it gets easier each time you complete the game, a roguelike in some ways.
There are mutators to make gameplay more dynamic, and each map also a seed for unique layout. What's nice is the maps can be very vertical with some awesome sections.
There are only 9 maps in total, so the game is not very long at all with the idea being to replay it. It has massive replayability potential.

Weapon range from generic shooters to some that take a while to figure out and can be really devastating if you know how to use it. You can also use items in the world to attack.
And the 3 main guns, of which you can only use one per game round, can be upgraded into some really excellent ways.
There are also loads of enemies, with some only spawning in certain game rounds.

Give the game a try, you'll probably get frustrated and stop playing. But go back and give it another go. It can be very rewarding.

I'm looking forwards to Titan Pixel's next project!

This game has improved massively, the modifiers are the best part. They give you a reason to grind now and change the game play dramatically.

This game was not well reviewed when it first came out and while I didn't play it at that time, after looking at the long list of bug fixes and additions since then, I can understand it. By now the game has received several patches, 2 overhauls, and a price drop. What's the verdict today?

It's fun, I recommend it. It's a fast-paced action shooter.

It's not perfect. There are occasional glitches but I've not encountered many. There are some very puzzling design choices. The mini-map is completely useless. The weapons are much too limited for the 90's aesthetic that they are going for. They require reloading and all pickup weapons get 1 clip, then empty forever unless you find another of the same one, which is rare. Only the starter primary weapon gets ammo pickups.

The game was originally very difficult for newbies. Thankfully, the newest version of the game makes it much more approachable. They made it easier to beat the game for the first time (only 8 levels to beat, instead of 12), which is nice. It takes 1-2 hours to get into the game. Most of the mechanics are not explained, but there are guides in Steam you can reference if you just want to get started. If you feel overwhelmed, just give yourself a bunch of mulligan runs where you just play around and die fast. This is a roguelike so you have to keep with it and die a bunch of times before you get the hang of it.

Mutators are the best part of the new editions. It's a shame they all have to be unlocked one by one. However, all you have to do is play to get unlock coins. You don't even have to play well. I like playing with big head mode because easy headshots give me a nice little edge.

There are also lots of secrets and tons of 90's vidya references so if you are into exploring for secrets and minigames there's plenty of that.

So, yeah, I would have done a few things differently, but overall this is a really fun game that I found exciting and drew me in. It's worth the price now.

One last bit of advice, try to get used to going fast. That's where this game really comes into its own. If you play it timid, like hide and peek potshots through doors, then you won't have as much fun. Jump around and strafe about like you used to in Quake.

I recommend this game. Not a must-play, but it's cool! 'Bite-sized' game that relies on forcing you to restart the whole game once you die. It's fun to go through once it clicks. Some ambiguous mechanics, not a fan of that. I was able to beat it on my 5th or 6th attempt, so not very difficult. Good music!

Devs would clearly be able to make a great 'full' FPS game. Talented dudes!

I don't understand all the bad ratings... This game is awesome.

Beautiful retro FPS graphics, a little bit Quake 2, a little bit Half Life
Awesome soundtrack
Decent Sound effects
Great responsive controls and game feel
The enemies are a little too repetitive but come on
Look at the price.
Come on, this is a great game. 8/10

It's a bit of a disappointment having played this game, after waiting an abundance of time for this games release it's really depressing the state this game was released in and left. Not much progress made after their last update, and really not much replay value even as a rogue-like, best to skip this, if you're looking for a more fast-paced first person shooter. I'd recommend looking somewhere else.

quake but better i recommend you get this if you like bunnyhopping while shooting zombies/aliens although since every playthrough is randomly generated there's more than an 80% chance that half way through a playthrough you're going to run into a dead end where you can't progress

I really want to like this game, I really do. It's a fun fast-paced shooter, that maybe isn't Quake, but is still pretty fun. However, I cannot recommend this game for a simple reason: The bugs and crashes are literally game breaking, and constant. I just did 3 runs, was doing very well, got to the last level anddddd: game hard crashed my computer, save lost. 2nd run, same thing but at an early level. I, a fool, try for a third time. I finish a level, and I am doing extremely well, past the games' half way point. and walking into the safe house after a level clear fall through the floor and have to manually end my run. I think I am done with this game, only to inevitably give it a shot in 9 months yet again and leave disappointed once more.

Pro:
- Very enjoyable and fast pace roguelike
- Love the art style
- There is some doom ref in the game <3
- Movement is solid for fast paced FPS rogue like
- The gunplay feels pretty good
- The gore is pretty ok at best
- The theme somehow feels like DOOM mixed with Dead Space which is good (There is even Similar enemy model like Dead Space creature in the game)

Cons:
- The game can be completed in less than 2 hours
- You literally only need one weapon and that is your main weapon (other weapon 100% are useless)
- The game doesn't feel really rewarding you to play again especially for rogue like game
- it's annoying in the few first level enemies and the level design at first level really confusing because all the material is the same...
- Some few bugs in the game
* Lost my save progress (Even after enter cyro pod to save) and need to restart from zero again :/
* Some missing image or texture effect (White Square popping up)

Simple and addicting, a single player version of Quake where there's a deliberate reward (Speed) for moving sideways while jumping (To strafe).

The story is none existent and the bits that can be discerned as part of a story are vague and cliché. While being a rogue like and having a lot of replay value there's not much to do, and after a few hours of gameplay one might get bored of the same levels. There's not much reward in using other weapons that aren't your main one and many supposedly upgrades end up ruining your gun and playstyle.

Still it is a fast paced FPS that copies many things that make other FPS like DOOM and Quake really good, it's fun no matter the problems. Wouldn't recommend if it is your first fast paced FPS experience, there's much better out there.

I was really burned by this game when it first released, being a high-school student without much to spend on games it was a big deal for me to go to Walmart and pick up a $20 steam card to buy this game. Normally $20 is the most I spend on games because I buy them on sale and see $60 as an outrageous amount to spend on any game. By then it was clear that the reaction to the game was pretty mixed but some reviewers I trust did like it so I went for it. I was met with what seemed to me to be unfair and artificial difficulty which was a result of ai that only went for you in a straight line in large quantities without sufficient resources to recover and I'd inevitably die in the second chapter. In addition I had played it just long enough that I couldn't get a refund (It said I had 2.1hrs and I tried 3 times but couldn't get a refund, usually steam's pretty forgiving but not on this game). I then tried to forget this game for a year, finally I gave it another shot and found it to be easier than I'd initially thought, I kept at it and unlocked some modifiers that made the game more forgiving and I eventually completed it. The game does a decent job of being approachable to people who aren't used to rouge-like games (like me) through providing some options and modifiers that make the game far more forgiving. By the time I'd completed the game and learned more about the mechanics I really did view the game in a whole different light, I think I'll go through again vanilla and try to find some of the awesome secrets that this game has.

A lot of people don't like this game but I do. It takes me back to the old Doom and Quake days.
Took me a long time to beat it and even now when I get to the end there is not certain I will win.
But, it is my unwind game after work. Engrossing enough that I can get away for a bit.
It has it's quirks that can be frustrating but I can live with it.

This is a great game. Addicting and fun. Challenging but not so brutal that you will give up on it. Quite the opposite...I picked this up last Christmas on sale and found myself playing it daily for MONTHS.

...EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. There is a LONG standing bug with this game where the frame rate will rapidly drop to 1fps. Given this is a rogue-like and you play until you hit the end in one long run, this is inexcusable. I've had more than one go at the end-game RUINED by this bug, and the developer refuses to fix it. And there's no way around it. You'll be having a great run and then boom, the whole game will be ruined when the frame rate drops to 1FPS, forcing you to restart the whole game (a pity you can't re-start from the last save, but that is one of the charms of this game).

So despite my love for this game, I'm giving it a thumbs down. Save your money until they FIX THIS BUG.
