Styx: Master of Shadows makes up for the challenging stealth-action across levels, it's not a pretty game by the standards of the current generation but its presentation of the story thrives on the deep meaning of its memorable character.

If you like a stealth game that isn't too hard, than Styx is for you. The main character may not be what you would expect for a lead character but he is likable, and the game is good. Love the background of this game too. Thumbs Up

If you expect stealth and/or combat, just forget about Styx and find yourself something more suitable :D

But if you want pure stealth experience in cleverly designed levels with lot of verticality, backed by one of best musical scores (strings quartet + bass guitar is just amazing combo, not mentioning vocal choir and percussion), Styx - Master of Shadows might be good choice for you.

It has its flaws, no doubt - controls are something you have to get used to. But the overall atmosphere and feeling of the game is quite special and unique.

Really enjoyable stealth third person fantasy game. Story is only about Styx and what happened to him and people around him. Graphics and environments are nice and good looking. Music and sounds are ok. Stealth mechanics are quite good and fighting is obviously not preferred. Game was enjoyable and was challenging when playing as pacifist = not killing anyone. Just stay in the shadows, use your skills and enjoy the game.

Styx: Master of Shadows is a competent stealth game which is at its best when you're exploring vast, open areas, plotting a course to avoid the guards and get to the exit. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the mid-game takes place in tight, confined sewers, where it's more about waiting for gaps in patrol routes than organically exploring the map. Worth a look if you enjoy stealth games, but maybe wait for a sale before you pick it up.

Styx is a pretty decent and surprisingly enjoyable stealth game which can be pretty challenging at times. The level design is excellent, usually changing as you advance and descend through the tower where the game is set. The skills and controls work really well.
As good as the game is, there are a few flaws. The voice-audio for the guards becomes repetitive, and sometimes the guards will get stuck, making advancing unseen difficult. If you come unprepared to the final fight it’s almost impossible to complete. In spite of this, the game still has a great story, beautifully designed visual cut-scenes, loads of different enemy types, and a likeable main character.

Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed,
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn,
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there.

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

From the dawn of humanity, the community was divided into several social classes, starting from the ruler and the nobles, through the middle urbanites who used to work in manufactures and were the basis of the economy, up to the underclass, the outcasts, which worked in various humiliating jobs for a piece of bread. Those, who did not wanted to be a subject of a tyrant decided to undertook some more profitable, but also more humiliating jobs such as prostitution and thievery. The society in almost every case despised such jobs and those who worked were turned on public discrimination and damnation. Thievery, while being a highly profitable way of making money is also a crime and a sin. But as soon as humans started to create societies, the thievery become one of the biggest problems. With high risk comes great treasures, but people should also known the thin line between good and evil. Styx is the worst example of greed and getting rich no matter the cost.

Our protagonist has a clear task since the beginning- to stole the magic amber from the Akenash tower. He knows that the risk is big, but thoughts about money from selling it are over his mind.
During the plot, we will discover that money is not the only thing Styx lives for.

From the technical side, the game stands on a good level. Every level we have to pass is fulfilled with various enemies and NPC's, and provides various tactics for completing it (we can do things loud without any complications, except that some parts of missions require not to alarm anybody, as well as the game itself, was made for playing stealth; Styx is a vulnerable creature, so he is likely to die fast when too many foes are around him). The level design stands on a good level, there are many places to hide and pass through enemies undetected and most of the levels are just beautiful- the dark fantasy climate is perfect for such places. The gaphics are good, title looks good even today, thanks to a specific climate. Another thing is the character itself- Styx personality fits perfectly for a thief, his story is maybe not so memorable like other characters from other games, but it's great for such a genre. With his unique abilities like creating a clone of himself or even going fully invisible he's a perfect candidate to be a successful assassin. On the other hand, the plot itself is not so interesting, there are some funny dialogues and one big plot twist
(in the middle of the game we begin to play as one of the thousands of Styxes just to prevent the original Styx from stealing the amber- our villain protagonist is replaced by a good antagonist)
but the history is too simple and after finishing game I had a feeling that there are some interesting things to be told. The title itself is long enough, the only problem here is plot. The soundtrack is good, very climatic one.

To sum up, Styx: Master of Shadows is a good game for rookies in Stealth games, in some moments I've felt that it's Hitman: Lite Verison or something. The ‘Lite’ here means that it's not worse but it's easier for those who are new to the genre and for people who want to have fun playing it. I really enjoyed playing it and would recommend it to anybody who is looking for a good game to finish in less than 2-3 days. A very good beginning for an interesting franchise!

Gameplay is the most important thing in any game. This game is basically putting out torches, waiting, killing guards, waiting, putting out torches from a distance, waiting, collecting stuff, waiting, putting out more torches, waiting. Sure, it's a stealth game, but your stealth options are so limited it feels like any other action/adventure game with lots of waiting. And putting out torches.

This was the least enjoyable stealth game I've played that was still competent. It's better than the kludged-in stealth segments of any non-stealth game, but that's the best I can say for it. There is a certain fuzziness to how detectable you are, where sometimes you expect to get caught in your position, but the guards walk blithely by, and other times you think your safe, but someone detects you from an unseen vantage point.

The main issue for me, however, is the density of the enemies. There are lots of opportunities for vertical movement, but they're mostly worthless. Often as not, the high-up, hard-to-reach areas are more heavily patrolled than the lower areas, so you're better off sticking to the ground. But everywhere, Everywhere, you are dodging unpredictable vision cones with no respite. Because of this, every level is fun for about five minutes before it settles down into an oppressive slog.

Maybe, if I were the leetest of no-life stelth bois, this game would have been more fun, but I am not, and I finished it out of spite.

Feels like they didn't playtest anything after Chapter 5. The story is mediocre and the climbing made me want to bash my head in with a lead pipe. The AI pathing is a joke at times and several object hitboxes are messed up, mainly the
dead orcs that can be found later in the game
. There are some major plotholes like
the elves being unable to kill Styx due to their strong connection to the amber, yet somehow Rakash managed to go undetected by Styx despite being made of it.
There's also no real interaction between enemies which would reasonably be fighting against each other as well as you, and instead everything is grouped into either being hostile to the player or incapable of attacking.

Overall it's mindless fun when you get around the annoying controls, poor tutorial, all aforementioned issues, and why is this a positive review again?

The game is fun but it is old and it shows. 4 levels are reused over and over again, 2 of them 3 times the other once. I finished it on hard and it really was not worth the challenge as it became really annoying dodging some form of enemies after a point. For 2 euros it is cool, anything more is not really worth it.

Set in the universe introduced in Of Orcs and Men, Styx: Master of Shadows redesigns the previous entry, taking a new, equally tactical, but more dynamic direction of a stealth game. Play as Styx, the mysterious goblin assassin, use darkness to infiltrate the fort built around the World Tree, create diversion by spawning your own clones, manipulate and trick your enemies, or just stab them if needed, to achieve your goal.

THE GOOD
- Like a good stealth game should, Styx: Master of Shadows emphasises the need of sticking to the shadows both by giving you a range of tricks worth of a sneaky backstabber (although you don’t really stab backs that often, admittedly) and making your life somewhat a hellish experience if you try to collide head-on into enemies. Most of the time you need to be silent and wary of every single detail in your surrounding if you want to proceed without getting a nigh-immortal tail of baddies trying to mash you into vegemite, although usually you’re given several different ways to accomplish your tasks. Dancing between lights and shadows, using deception through skills and items, having ability to control environment (to a certain degree) – that’s the basics of the stealth genre and here they are executed correctly.
- In addition to mindless dagger-sinking into the craniums of unwary humans and other beings, you’re offered a decently rich universe and, more importantly, a really interesting story, albeit slightly abstruse. You won’t really learn that much about the world itself, though enough to see how Styx’s complicated relationship with everything around him developed through the years. I especially appreciated two aspects of the storytelling here – one is the very successful twist that turns the plot upside down and the other is the elves which are kind of terrifying, but in a good way. Also, Styx himself is a lovely bastard that is impossible to feel indifferent towards, whichever way your feelings swing here, and that’s a valuable asset of a main character.
- Skill progression is very simple and consists of seven branches (it’s hard to call these “trees”, since they are fully linear), each of which is associated to one of the gameplay aspects, like upgrading your inventory space, making your kills more effective or turning invisible for a longer time. While being nothing revolutionary, this system is perfectly intuitive. By making each skill unlock a relatively small step towards greatness it also guarantees that you won’t accidentally break the game by being too powerful too early on. And hey, it allows you to create your own clones which help you with the baddies, that’s kind of dope.
- Enemies standing between you and your destination are designed so everything you learn is tested properly. In addition to standard lackeys forming the core of opposing forces and being vulnerable to pretty much everything you throw at them, there are also those that will only fall through deception and cannot be killed with straightforward stabbing. Some will never see you but hear every step you take, others will sense you nearby, making them only open to swift executions from above. Even while stealthy you also need to be stylish, said the developers, and that diversity is great to provide an extra challenge.
- Whether you are an adept of completionism, wish to unlock every skill or just want to experience different facets of the same story, there is enough replay value in Master of Shadows to keep you occupied for a while. You get insignias, and skill points required to unlock… well, skills, by finishing levels undetected, without making any non-obligatory kills, rushing through them within a certain time limit and finding all tokens scattered around (that one probably extended my playtime by around 400%). It’s a nice touch for different approaches to gaming overall and a way of making everyone at least a bit happier.

THE MIXED BAG
- While combat is never your main means of achieving success, sometimes it feels proper to unleash your inner Bruce Lee and kick some butts. Unfortunately, Styx’s kung fu is mediocre at best, just as the whole combat section of the game he stars in. The whole process is split between parrying (that’s clicking in right moments) and executing the kill (that’s clicking once again after successful parries). Dodging, which should be helpful in certain situations, is more often than not detrimental since camera work is wonky and makes you almost completely unaware of obstacles and walls around you. Fighting against more than one enemy is nigh impossible, since they tend to forget about the savoir vivre of video game cannon-fodders and attack simultaneously – which is a nice touch to remind you that you’re weak but cunning and should rely on wits instead of muscles. Overall, though, combat mechanics are uninspired and could be better.
- It’s nitpicking, but apart from Styx himself and maybe two NPCs, voices and the acting that follows aren’t too high-flown. That’s fine, since there is such a limited array of character anyways, but those you encounter the most often – enemies – sound like fasted, violence-starved psychopaths. I know I should look for extra excuses for hostility, these are my enemies after all, but we really went over the top here and it’s more ridiculous than anything else.

THE BAD
- Here comes the main objection: gameplay designs of the levels and their one-to-one reuse over the course of the game. Dirty, dank cellars, dingy prison cells, dilapidated sewers are all surely atmospheric and fitting for the plot, the universe and characters inhabiting it, although the creative process behind these environments must’ve stopped halfway through. That’s more or less when levels begin repeating, sometimes even with no sign of rehashing, just a blunt copy-paste. Whenever you come back to an already familiar place, it only gets refilled with fresh waves of enemies light-heartedly stepping where you would leave dozens of corpses – but now they’re gone. Remember this guard you threw into a wardrobe? Well, he’s not there anymore and no one cares. Found a secret passage? It may only be usable later, when it’s more conventional for the plot. Also, it really seems like huge chunks of levels usually only serve the purpose of hiding pickups that you don’t even have to worry about to finish the section. Wasted potential here and not enough diversity.
- Sometimes it’s incredibly difficult to figure out why an enemy sees or hears you even if the other one didn’t in a very similar situation just a moment before. Taking a miniscule step may fully expose you even though the stealth is based on a three-part system of enemy perception: alerted but not moving – alerted and actively searching – fully aware. Going from zero to full-on Goblin Extermination Task Force Mode sometimes seems to be a matter of luck or variables unknown to the player. Not often enough to make the game random, fortunately, so skill matters much more, but enough to make it frustrating every now and then.
- After everything you’ve done, every enemy you’ve felled, every secret you’ve found, you’re greeted by the final encounter so anti-climactic it makes it hard to believe that’s really it. There is some extra lore exposition, you learn important details about yourself and your mission, there are cutscenes and a gigantic “we’re leaving things open for potential sequels” sign, but your own part that should be grandiose is actually very meh.

OVERALL
Styx: Master of Shadows is a game worth your time, whether you’re a fan of stealth mechanics, an adventurer ready to delve into yet another, interesting universe or want to spend some time as a goblin assassin merrily stabbing his way through dangers. The game is atmospheric and ugly in a good way. It misses the mark every now and then, but imperfections never hinder it from bringing mystery, constant sense of being watched and, most importantly, fun.

Styx: Master of Shadows is a great stealth game. You are a green little something (I don't want to specify what you are) in this big City with no memory why you are here, just this urge to keep chasing a vague goal in the back of your mind. First things first, the story is great. I enjoyed it a lot, but that's all I want to say about it to avoid spoilers. Let's get into the gameplay a bit. You try to find your way through big maps from one end to another, avoiding getting seen and doing various tasks that gain you XP to level up your abilities. Talking about abilities, you have a very limited amount of skills and items to use, which still work great in the game's context (stuff like turning invisible for a few seconds or making a clone of yourself to help out with tasks [those 2 are basically the most important once]. One last thing about the gameplay that I enjoyed a lot. The game has great, I like to call them, FLOATY controls. This game just hits the sweet spot for me. Jumping, walking and sneaking feel great, though take a bit getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you will know what I mean.
Should you buy the game?
To be honest, it took me 3 tries getting into the game. The first 2 times I played till level 2 or 3 and just stopped caring. On the third try however it hooked me and I finished it in 3 sittings. It doesn't reinvent the wheel of how you think stealth games work, but it's a solid experience in that regard.
Just one thing that bugged me a bit is that the last few levels are basically some you already played earlier with new enemies. Wasn't too big of a dealbreaker for me though since I didn't go for a 100% collectable run on all the levels and didn't already know them in and out, just so that you 100%ers are warned and know what to expect.

2. Great lore
3. Awesome cinematics
that don't differ much from gameplay, great dialogue, being able to make game altering decisions. And of course, as in all of these games- Styx is an Anti Hero of bad ass proportions.

The achievements in the game are somewhat easy to get. Skill trees are nice, can be better.
Combat is the only part of the game that I have a problem with

8/10

Cant wait to play the next one in the series

TL;DR:
The best game in the series and one of the best stealth game there is. This is how gaming should be. They don't make games like this much these days, and if they do you probably won't hear about it.

readinisbad4health, so read on:
Like most stealth games, it is trial and error, with poor combat; however, there are plenty of ways to kill everyone, so that's great. The maps are diverse, huge, and offers great the verticality, which gives a lot of options when it come reaching your goals. Visually, the environment looks great, even if character model and animation can look a tad be low budget, but you won't notice it when the gameplay is this much fun. There is a leveling system, the more criteria (pacifist, all collectibles, quick run, etc.) you meet beating a map, the more exp you get to level up. You can get more inventory space, more ways to kill ppl, etc. Maps are repeatable, giving the game more replay value. Music, voice acting and dialogues are ok, not good, not bad, but ok.

Quality of life features are in abundance there is Quick saves, rebindable keys, more importantly there is no overprices DLCs, no p2w, no microtrancs. And if you can get it on GOG I think its DRM free? So don't be a fool like me and buy it on Steam. No FOV slider unfortunately, but this is a TPS, a TPS without the now overused over-the-shoulder angle, so I'll let it slide this time.

9/10, worthy every penny

First off: the game can be a little janky, don't expect a AAA experience here. But if you're looking for a fun stealth game with a unique set of mechanics and story this might interest you. A few tips: don't worry about collecting every little thing, you can replay levels and it will be easier to go back and get what you want after you've powered up. Do go for the achievements if you feel like the game's too easy (not raising the alarm or going pacifist are good ones), they also reward bonus skill points. If you are doing the achievements look up what counts/doesn't count as, for instance, an alert. Some of it is a little surprising.

As for skills: I'd personally recommend upgrading the item tree as a must, the rest is down to play style. Whatever you pick you'll want to look at the ultimate skills first to determine what you want, they unlock after completing a pair of skill trees.

Pros:
+ Styx is a solid stealth game, all the fundamentals are there and Styx has some unique abilities that keep the game feeling unique.
+ New enemies and obstacles are introduced through out the entire game forcing you to adapt your play style.
+ The levels are a decent size and usually give you a variety of options on how to traverse obstacles.
+ Resource management is important. Especially if you're going for some of the achievements later in the game you're going to find yourself looking for amber even if you can carry three vials of the stuff.
+ The story isn't amazing but it has some interesting and unique ideas.
+ The stealth kills are quick and brutal which is fun

Cons:
- The game is janky. Things like collision detection and stealth detection can sometimes feel off, but you get used to it pretty quick. Save frequently though, you never know when you'll miss a jump it looks like you shouldn't have.
- The game can be unclear about some things: what counts as an 'alert' for the achievement, what you can/can't climb, a little searching and experimentation will get you through though.
- There is a weird sort of lock-on duel combat system when alert enemies catch you. It's a bad QTE, I'd just try to avoid it. This is a stealth game after all.
- The story has some really interesting ideas but outside of those the plot is pretty standard and a lot of the characters can feel cliche or flat.
- The final battle is anticlimactic and a let down.

50/50:
= Levels are reused. It does feel different going through a level in reverse and the new challenges make them play different, but there's no getting around the second half of the game being mostly reused levels.
= You might not be as interested in the game's ideas as I was. If not then the story will probably fall flat as that's most of it's merit.
= There are a couple of times you are presented with a 'choice' in the game. It doesn't seem to matter though so do what you want.

Good stealth game play, where you have the option of going for 100% sneaking, assassinating your opponents in various ways and even direct combat as a last resort (or any combination of those).
Level design with multiple routes to your objective is well executed and beautifully designed.
To top that off it has an interesting story with some nice twists.
Well worth your time.

Don't bother yourself finishing this game in order to play Styx: Shards of Darkness.

The gameplay is good, but you may experience some issues with the controls some times.
The combat system is just so annoying and requires the player to trick the AI.
The dialogue is something else. It's so flat and ridiculous that it would feel like a 10 year old kid wrote it, which makes the game unenjoyable whenever someone speaks (including Styx).
The graphics are good and polished.

If you don't own any Styx game, then I recommend you to just go for Styx: Shards of Darkness, unless you are someone who likes to start from the beginning.

If there is anything else you wish to know about the game, please leave a comment.

I really like this game but it’s not without flaws. STYX plays a lot like Metal Gear Solid in that it’s a stealth action adventure game and killing isn’t the primary means of achieving a goal. Of course, one can go in and kill everything or you can actually go without kills and be a true sneaky thief. In fact the game rewards you for showing mercy. This review is for normal difficulty.

The Good
-I feel like this is a true sneaking game. You actually have to stick to the shadows, snuff torches, explore, and find creative ways to get around mobs and obstacles. Very big plus. Stealth is balanced, making the game easy to pick up and master.
-Lots of replay value. You can go back and do all the kills or let everyone live - you have to do the MERCY errand every mission if you’re going for achievement completion, but you do get extra skill points for it. And there’s also coins to collect, and multiple ways to complete a mission, secret achievements , etc.
- The Dark humor is a nice touch. Styx has some good quips every so often, so the game doesn’t take itself too seriously. But there is swearing and some adult humor so it might not be appropriate for the prudish.

The Meh
-The soundtrack starts out nice but quickly loops after a few notes.
-Although the parkour is fun, some of the climb/drop/swing takes a moment or two to register and sometimes you jump from the wall away from where you were intending to go much like we did back in the old Tomb Raider days.
-It’s a game where achievements are rinse and repeat for the most part. Save game, do a thing, reload and do it again. Not a huge drawback, but more that required skill would’ve felt more worth it to satisfy my inner completionist.
-Apparently Styx can whistle to alert guards so you can walk around them while your clone can growl and do the same. Very Metal Gear like, but I don’t remember that being in the training mission. Didn’t find out one can do that until mission 4 or so and only thanks to a video walk through. Would’ve been great to know early on but at least I know now.

The Bad
- Combat is pretty jerky and difficult to get used to. Unless a story mission requires you to kill a certain someone I almost didn’t even bother most of the time. Even with the Skill upgrades getting into fights are more trouble than they’re worth.
- I pretty much gave up on the story. Something about elves and a tree, and Styx can’t remember much and gets headaches. Not much to really draw me in as far as a timeline or backstory goes. Not a big drawback, but I know this is a game in some kind of series so maybe I’m just not familiar because I’ve never played the other.

Overall, I like STYX. Despite some flaws it has a lot of promise and more replay value than a standard action adventure game these days. Grab it when it’s on sale.

This, along with the rest of the styx series (Of Orcs and Men and Styx: Shards of Darkness) are the best games I've played in a long time. Most negative reviews I've been seeing are because of the difficulty, but honestly that's what made the most fun out of it for me. If you wanna have fun in this game I suggest coming in with a patient mindset and understanding you're gonna be dying quite a bit, the payoff for this kind of game is super satisfying imo. Honestly wish I bought the game for full price rather than sale so I could support the creators more :)

I know Styx for $2 is a killer deal, but until the end of March, Fanatical has a bundle for $2 that includes Styx along with 11 other games. It is the Allstars 13 Bundle! I recommend buying it off of there.

Styx is pretty fun though, I played it on console years ago. Nothing revolutionary but satisfies if you have an itch for a stealth game!

EDIT: The bundle has been extended till April 15th!

Well, Styx is one hell of a game, that's it nothing more to say!

Heh well let's go a bit deeper into it, Styx is a game that will make you go WHAT ?! more times than you care to admit, I streamed this on Twitch to a group of people that had never seen it before and we all got surprised with the story as well as the game itself.

The story is straight-up amazing and will catch you off guard and by surprise more than once and even make you cry a little bit when well you will see! (No Spoilers)

Gameplay-wise Styx can be played in every way you want, you can go ass creed and slaughter everyone in your way, it is still stealth if there is no one left alive right? or you can go full stealth mode and never be seen, heard, or even smelled (Yes that is a thing) which is strongly recommended for the harder difficulties. Styx is a very solid gameplay experience and a mix between stealth, puzzle, and problem solving mixed with an amazing sense of humor.

While the graphics are a bit outdated in the cinematics and cutscenes the game age is not showing at all within the game itself and is stunning visuals that often will distract you and end up killing you if you aren't careful, but that's the beauty of the game, even the grimdark places of the game looks beautiful and straight-up amazing equal to the big bright areas there are, you can see the artists spent a lot of time and love on every single level they created.

So yea I strongly recommend Styx for anyone who likes stealth games and who likes to be sneaky with a good sense of humor while keeping a very serious story going forward, it is a game I would recommend to well everyone really, grab it when you can it have already been in multiple sales and bundles so should be easy enough to get and to play!

One advice I will give is that it is a LOT easier to play Keyboard/Mouse compared to Controller due to some minor old bugs when you start jumping around, also be aware of the AI that can glitch now and then but it is never game-breaking or any issues, it brings up some fun moments tho!

Styx: Masters of Shadows
---------------------------------
A stealth game with a fun fantasy universe and solid characters.
the story is fun but it shines in stealth gameplay.

Fantastic designed maps and a great artstyle makes for a good game.
There are some gameplay design choises that could be better.
But you will get the hang of them while playing.

Game runs great with no issues. Always a plus.
I'm a fan, it looks to be a great franchise.

Have fun !

Yehh, it's cool. Takes me back to Thief 14 years ago i guess. Been so long. Adds a few cool elements such as leveling upgrades and climbing. That lil fella can jump and swing!! The graphics are smooth & enjoyable. The amber tree alone is worth the viewing time.
Don't let the bad reviews affect your decision to buy it at $2 !!!

I completely loved it! I spent hours on this game and really liked lurking through the shadows, finding a good hiding spot and making a plan to kill every guard in each level. In the last levels I couldn't manage to do so, because there were just too many, but I left the most levels empty, which was funny. It was ridiculous to watch the guards go on normally with their routine while around the corner everybody was dead and the hidden corners were stacked with corpses :D Just absurd.

Sometimes there was a little bug, but I honestly can't even remember what it was and most of the time i just restarted the level and it was gone. As it's one of the games where you have to save often anyways it doesn't make any difference.

I'm always very amused about how much many gamers can feel downright assaulted by bugs or stuff like that. Dude. Fuck it, start the game anew and go on. Or leave it be. Or ask for a refund if it's that bad.

Or some here say the A.I. has typical stealth-problems.. well.. in my eyes this game is obviously a big riddle. Every level is just a riddle waiting to be solved. This is not a game that wants to simulate a real world, because then it would be even easier. The guards have certain routes and people in a big radius can hear suspicious movements, so that it becomes harder, but also to be more predictable, so that you as a player can work out a strategy. If everybody would move like in the real world and would have real reactions, than this game wouldn't be a stealth-riddle anymore, I'd say.

But as always.. there are the gamers that say: DoN't BuY ThIs FoR FuLl PriCe etc.. The gamers that think game developers owe them something. :D

I say: Enjoy! The game was great!

WARNING READ THE CON FIRST:
Con: The game will crash several times and the devs have no intention on fixing the issue since it submitted an update back in 2014. There are two crash points are after the first mission or the the 6 mission.
Some players have found a few glitches into gameplay.

Pro: Playing an orc who was made by the world tree into the first goblin is an interesting story. Playing the prequel of Orcs and Men was a great introduction into the realm of STYX. This second chapter of the trilogy it very engaging. I am a bit confused how Barimen is alive in the beginning of this tale ( the guy was dropped of the side of a cliff by the orc AKIAL), is it an imposter. I am restarting the game at this point because I like to get familiar with the base controls and nuances. The graphics, the storyline, and controls are very good. I recommend this title highly even if you have not played its predecessor. Who doesn't like the idea of being a thief, assassin or merc all roll up in a killer goblin, previously orc scholar.

I do recommend this game just as much as I recommend the devs fixing the issues of late.

I'm sorry to say that but this game is not the thing I expected.

I'm not a fan of stealth stuff but I love games which have great atmospheres, this game has it. The atmosphere, the sound design, the voice acting; everything is perfect but it feels a bit disturbing for me. I mean the atmosphere itself is too dark and wacky. Level design is cliché, gameplay gets boring after a couple of minutes.

Also the wacky thing is, i wonder why new school stealth games have special visions to see everyone through stuff, making a clone to lower the risk which is the key feature of the game, being able to invisible and such. These are the most wacky things I've ever seen in a stealth game. Like come on!

Don't get me wrong, I tried my best to love this game. Ended up refunding it.

I love stealth games and Styx is one of the ones I enjoy the most!
Styx is a well made character and the world you play in is exciting.
It's challenging if you want to and being able to play the missions in the way you want.
A love and hate game. It got me so frustrated several times -but once you know how to progress it's easy.

Pros: Interesting levels, side quests, different enemies, perks, beautiful graphics.
Cons: Repetitive maps(you will run into same maps along the way, but from different starting point), enemies have incredible throwing knife skills(they will hit you mid air), you will save a lot, there's no real tactic here, mostly luck.
While game offers stealth mechanics, it fails at doing everything else. I would say pick it on sale at 90% off otherwise its not worth it.

PROS: Satisfying core gameplay loop, fun abilities like poisoning food and booby trapping boxes with Goblins, good character design, gorgeous skyboxes and outdoor levels, funny but not overbearing jokes/one liners, cool comicbook style cutscenes, dedication to its genre, Styx has amazing voice acting and is a likeable protagonist, balanced skills, consistent character progression that's fast but always has you looking forward to getting new upgrades, very high skill ceiling, interesting gameplay mechanics like landng on soft floors to reduce noise, plenty of replay value, most challenges are optional, allows replay of levels mid-campaign, decent music with a fantastic main theme, simple and partly diegetic HUD, Akenash is a really cool setting.

CONS: Fickle climbing especially around ledges mean you'll fall to your death often and dropping down some spots can be vexing, the lore is pretty generic and mostly uninspired, lacks enemy variety and has mostly reskins of a few types of guard, no quicksave mechanic, default brightness is too dark, plot is hardly riveting, dialogue repeats a lot, Robies are never fun to deal with, sometimes the lighting is inconsistent and you'll be shown as in the dark when it's clearly not so and vice versa, very little enemy infighting that is mostly scripted and not used to its fullest potential, buggy AI, inconsistent guard awareness, lots of mechanics not given a tutorial like whistling, good upgrades locked behind useless ones, some levels (mostly sewer or prison ones) look like garbage, collectables are only useful if you get all of them in one run of the level and aren't really worth the effort to get all of them, repetitive kill animations.

DEPENDS ON YOUR TASTE: Some enemies require special tactics to kill and your knife won't work, fair deal of vulgarity (pissing, swearing, puking, innuendo) that some may dislike, lots violence and death obviously, hardcore stealth: combat is usually ineffective, long levels split into multiple parts that can take around an hour to finish, stealth has a focus on being quiet as much as being unseen, timing is a core part of gameplay, linear levels, no dialogue options, light puzzle elements that are mostly optional, slow pace, frequent platforming.

SUMMARY: A robust stealth experience that has lots of charm, some unpolished ideas, an entertaining but simple plot and room to fail hard or feel like a true master of shadows. At its worst frustrating, ugly and boring but at its best satisfying, charming and gleeful. It's a mixed bag but if you enjoy stealth games, are a glutton for punishment or just think goblins are neat you might as well try it.

VERDICT:
Overall I give it a 6/10 Personally as I enjoy it overall and it's fun to play but I'm personally not to big on a lot of stuff as evidenced by the paragraph of cons.
Objectively I give it a 7.5 If you like some of the ore subjective stuff that I listed as cons and none of the 'depends' stuff bothers you then you'' probably love it, so at least try it out.

First of the Of Orcs and Men prequels tells the origin story of the funky goblin with great detail and dedication.
Even though the gameplay differs from O&M drastically, it's safe to say that this game is an enourmous improvement by a longshot. Gameplay blends features from several genres being some sort of a semi platformer and semi stealth 3rd person RPG and does it's job very very well.

Pros:
-Storyline is quite intriguing and interesting and the pacing helps drastically to streamline the game into a very enjoyable experience,
-Graphics and design are just WAY too good for it's rather humble budget,
-Although the game itself is extremely straightforward about what you're meant to do, most missions have enough ''side-quests'' for you to explore the location fully, searching every nook and cranny to find that sweet SP coins,
-Most of the time you'll have at least 3 ways to progress to the next sub-area of the mission, whether you like fighting or not...

Cons:
-Speaking of fighting... It's not good. Like- not good at all. It is distinctly reminiscent of the Thief series dueling and it is the only weak point of this game. At least in my opinion.

I should like this game, and yet I don't. Because in theory it is a stealth game with open levels and difficult combat. I love such games. I revere Thief. However, this game does a lot aspects wrong. In fact, the longer I played the more I realized it's actually not the kind of game I enjoy.

First of all, it's not really a stealth game. It's a half stealth and half platforming game. With terrible controls, especially in the platforming part. I usually died because I jumped wrong - a milimetre or two from where I was supposed to, or it turned out that the goblin cannot hold onto that object, even though he dangles on many similar.

Second, the AI is extremely predictable and dumb. That's a problem with many stealth games, but this is extreme version. So many years have passed since the first Thief, and the AI seems even dumber than there. It's not that this game is easy, but AI feels too much like a robot. Hivemind robot, because if one sees you, everybody on the entire planet knows where you are.

Third, inconsistency. Jump 5 meters down on a carpet or walk right behind a guard and he doesn't notice you. Throw some sand nearby, and he's hunting you down.

Finally, lack of controls over the goblin. I guess his short legs can't run, but why do I get locked onto an enemy if he discovers me? Why can't I even attempt to hide? And again, why jumping is so frustrating and I fall to death even on easiest of obstacles because I aimed camera slightly different...

Overall, weak and frustrating platformer-stealth mix.

Overall great stealth game. One thing to mention is that you have unlimited saves. My dumb self thought you were limited to 4 saves per mission but the numbers after your save is just what part of the mission you are on. You can also undo skill points to respec them without losing anything. So the game I expect is even more enjoyable than when I played it handicapping myself unintentionally.

This is the essence of what a stealth game should be. A game that not only wants you to think before you act, it requires you to do so. If not, death is guaranteed. That is exactly what infiltration should be. You are a spy, a thief, if you're caught you're done. Make too much noise and they will start looking for you, and if you are found there is little chance of getting out of it alive. And that is how it's supposed to be, you're a goblin, small and weak compared to any human. You think you can fight them all and survive? You can't run into the patrols and just defeat them like in a hack and slash. They don't surround you and patiently wait for their turn to face you, one will directly fight you, and while you try to parry his blows the others will also strike at you, throw daggers and shoot their crossbows at you. You're in permanent danger and must learn to be careful and strategic. And that is only to finish the level, try challenging yourself with a no alarms and no kills run for extra fun.
Putting that aside, Styx is an amazing protagonist, wanted the morally righteous hero wich is also an assassin? Wrong game, you get a goblin assassin, an ugly little green dude with an acid sense of humor that only cares about himself. And that is not a bad thing at all, the character is so well put together and charismatic that you'll end up loving him anyways. The story is also really good and the level design is impressive. I like this game a lot.

just play Thief...Styx does nothing new or original...if you like sneaking around then Thief and even Dishonored are 100 times more enjoyable than Styx! It's OK...but nothing more sadly...

This game is a real gem of the stealth genre. Huge detailed levels with great verticality and really good atmosphere. The story is so-so. If you like hiding in dark corners, nooks and crannies and sneaky kills in the back, then this game is definitely for you. Don't sleep on it if you already have it and never played. And If you don't, then absolutely pick it up and enjoy.

A pure stealth game, a true gem. Yes, there is combat, but it is so fucking (in a good way) that it forces you to do everything in stealth.

To give you an idea on how hidden you can play, most of the levels took me around 1 to 2 hours to finish, where there is a level that took me 4 hours along a week, because I was trying to complete everything without being detected, without killing anyone and taking all tokens (secrets present in every level).

The story is also VERY surprising at the end.

The best game I played in 2020
I know I am very late
But this game is great and definitely worth your time and money.

Came for the stealth.......

.....stayed for the fantastically awful dialogue, hilarious.

Honestly it's so dreadful it's great and really adds to the appeal of this fun stealth game.

I hope the sequel is just as bad.

Styx Master of shadows would have been a great game if it weren't for its repetitiveness...also, some basic abilities skills which should have been from the beginning require quite a few skill points to unlock...
The maps' designs are quite similar to each other and it seems there is too much space wasted...
I encountered some bugs here and there but nothing game-breaking...I recommend you playing it once and that's it...

I'm not a fan of hardcore stealth game. This one being midcore was rather enjoyable.

THE GOOD:
+ A great story.
+ Large maps with multiple pathways to your objectives.
+ Stealth mechanics.

...AND THE BAD:
- Combat was a bit lackluster.
- No final boss.
- Skilltree could have been better.

Styx master of the shadows
one of the few stealth games in a medieval high fantasy setting taking direct inspiration from the first Thief games . Its about a goblin styx first of its kind trying to steal the heart of the world tree from hymans and elves.
Gameplay is like any old school stealth game so if you get detected and get into combat 9/10 times you will most likely die but the problem with combat was the ridiculous mechanic which force lock you to any enemy in your vicinity and you have pretty much fight him until any of the two die! (are you not entertained devs?) , this is counterintuitive to the stealth gameplay which this game promotes and punishes the player really hard for the smallest mistake! but even when the player avoids combat the even worst platforming controls shown a rushed game which is still unfixed today ! when you a grab a ledge you automatically climb it! so you try to hide from enemies from ledges and you really cant cause your goblin tries to intimidate them showing his ungly face again and again without of course results!
other problems is that most of enemy models looks really generic and pale and less detailed in comparison to styx ,
the oddly friendly relationship with flesh eating bugs and humans !!,
the weird placement of a few enemies which dont make sense for the story like orcs in a human palace without context just to annoy you
one of the worst designed boss battle in history of videogames in the end of the game!! ( i finished it thanking the parry god of dark souls)
one of the smallest and underdeveloped skills trees
in conclusion this game seemed rushed and with a lot of potential if developers gave it more time !
Only get it from sale if you are big fan of stealth games!

Never got the game to load on my system. Would click on shortcut, see the Styx Logo, then screen would go white and not allow me to access other program. Would have to restart to run anything else. Uninstalled and installed 3 times, same problem. Getting a refund. Shame, game looked good on streams.

I like the way the game presents itself, but hell.. it has problems
I've been seen through walls or seen from a distance while bathed in the dark, pulled through walls, gaurds have instantly gone into alert mode while I'm slow sneaking behind them while they do something like lighting a torch.

I'm not too big on stealth games, but this one was fun. Not really much in the story department, but the lvl design was great. Naturally , you can either stealth the game, or kill everyone (but fighting 2 or more enemies will be quite difficult), no real replay value, but once you beat the game you can replay the stages with all the skills unlockesdand get all the achivements, if that is your thing.

Experienced a gamebreaking bug where you cannot progress to the next mission if you replay a previous mission to complete secondary objectives. Forums explain that it's a well-known issue that the developers have simply decided to do nothing about. Uninstalled and removed from my library.
