M4 SOPMOD II :)

Insanely good story. About 30hr main story with a bunch of post game stuff to collect. The combat is highly combo focused and the game does a decent job at teaching you how to best utilize the system. The music is so fitting to each zone as well. Alot of the post game or new game collectibles will be pretty tedious to gather. You will need to scourer every inch of the maps and make sure to fight every single enemy. The game has an in-game log to keep you on track though if you are teh completionist type.

Story though is really where this game shines, must play for RPG fans.
The side banter among the party also brings in some good smiles and laughs.
Some of the story is sad too. All around emotionally gripping tale.

I'm huge fan of the series. Really wanted to like this game after hearing so much about how much better it is than Zestiria,

Pros

. Better main characters than Zestiria.

. No more jank camera for battles like in Zestiria w/ the exception of one battle.

Cons

. Obviously a budget title. They use skits whenever they can for story stuff instead of creating a 3D scene.

. Combat became a button masher even more than Zestiria.

. The game punishes you for doing bad in combat by limiting your combo length, while it does reward you for doing good I'd rather not have my SG that I worked hard to increase outside of combat, get taken away.

. Combat can be way too easy at times, having your combo lengths get shorter doesn't make it harder just super frustrating.

. Level design is just awful and rushed. They think adding shiny orbs is enough to keep these big areas interesting. I hated going through cheaply generated terrain hallway dungeons.

. Except for Artorious, the villains aren't that great. The rival villains just aren't around for like 70% of the game.

The Tales franchise is probably my favourite when it comes to gaming - they've been here for me since of Tales of Destiny.
This title was such an amazing journey, the story was fantastic, the characters have such charm and personality, and of course the emotional abuse was abundant (My feelings felt too many feelings). I played this after Zestiria and I have to say that it made the whole game more emotional for me, especially knowing the fate of one of my favourite characters of all time. I highly recommend this title to those who have never played it or Tales games in general so much so I've even bought it for a friend.

The combat system is overly complex and generally not fun. However, the story is utterly fantastic and is probably the best example of playing as anti-heroes available. The perfect game for those who are sick of playing endless 'Purity Sues'.

Pros:

Excellent story

Highly interesting protagonists and antagonists

Very long game. This could be a positive or negative, but it can easily take 50+ hours to beat the game. Much, much longer if you try to explore a lot of it.

Cons:

Convoluted battle system that requires you to micromanage nearly everything, except -- funny enough -- for the actual battle itself, which is mostly auto.

Tons and tons of backtracking. The game does add some things later on to improve the backtracking, but there is still an enormous amount of useless traveling.

The game badly needs QOL improvements. It could really use a 'Loadout' feature that can quickly change your strategy as needed and an 'auto-adjust artes' feature that auto chooses artes for you based on the enemy's weakness. Both of these can reduce the micromanagement by a great deal.

Overall, I'd rate the game 8/10.

Two big weaknesses:

1) The combat is really repetitive, which would not be a big problem but I spent like 30 hours and I don’t think I’m halfway yet… no more of this please…

2) The character interaction stuff is really annoying, there are random points where they will start talking in the middle of the area but it almost never has anything to do with the area, they don’t even comment on the environment. Somebody wrote the dialogue, and then they just picked spots ever 5 minutes where the dialogue would be initiated.

The characters have genuine potential if only the mechanics weren’t so clunky. It seems like it’s trying to be final fantasy 7-9 without any of the effort to make environments charming. You have no sense of culture from the cities, just different houses.

Incredibly boring. I only played for 6 hours but I honestly couldn't find any motivation to keep going. 6 hours is plenty of time to capture my interest and it failed. I was convinced to purchase this game by all the positive reviews about how great the story was. It's not often that I am in such disagreement with the majority of reviewers. The dialogue is written like a cheap run of the mill anime and the pacing of the main story did not even come close to holding my attention. If you are on the older side I recommend you skip this one because it's pretty obvious the writing in this game is targeted at teenagers or very young adults.

Tales of Berseria is, in my opinion, the strongest entry of the series. The combat system is extremely refined, the voice actors are all incredibly good, the story is paced well, the characters are believable and lovable, and the music and 2D animation exceed expectations of a videogame. Above all, the darker tone, at times feeling like you're playing the villains of the story, is what makes Berseria's themes land so well.

I... needed to learn how the battle system works at first since I feel like it explained itself too quickly and not very well, but once I got past that phase, I fell in love with this game <3

Velvet may not always be likeable but she is one of the most fascinating JRPG protagonists in my honest opinion <3 And every other playable character was a delight for other reasons too! Needless to say, the story itself made those characters shine all the better by giving them - and the world around them - amazing building and growth!

The graphics are pleasant and colorful, and while it's not quite a top tier JRPG soundtrack, Berseria still had great music for sure, with many great standout pieces!

Tales of Berseria is definitely a must play if you like the genre!!

Denuvo DRM in this PC port = Negative review
(Despite it being one of my all time favorite action RPGs.)

Customers deserve the freedom to play their games offline!
(Like in the superior PS4 version.)

Paying customers should not be punished because piracy exists!

Don't ignore this game because it's older! You're still making money off of it Bamco!

If you're a fan of good 'ol action RPG, this may be for you.

PROS: story and character development is great. battle system is good once you get a hang of it. music is your typical tales hit-em-hard synths.

CONS: dungeon, maps, and town design can feel a little bland. puzzles are mostly switches to open the door and there's no fast travel yet early in the game.

My favorite thing about the game are the skits. It's what makes it a FUN experience. If you're into fantasy/adventure + slice of life anime & JRPGs, this is a great game for you.

Combat is fun and deep but I'm awful and button-mashing on normal lets me progress just fine (if a bit over-leveled maybe).

Legitimately a good JRPG and I'm sucker for a well framed anti-hero story. One reason I love the JRPG genre is how they really build party characters storylines and synergy. This game nails that. Backstories and character interactions are so well fleshed out that it makes you care about the characters since you're immersed in their story.

Funny enough this game is pirate related, and if I were to compare this to One Piece I would call the cast in this game my nakama anytime.

Tales of Berseria combines the usual Tales series elements streamlined and wrapped in a solid plot.

I enjoyed this one a lot; the plot moved pretty quickly, and for the most part the detours made sense and didn't bog the story down with unnecessary grinding. There's plenty of the usual sidequests; with monster hunting, skits to watch, items to collect, oceans to explore, cooking to perfect, achievements to unlock, and battle royales where you can test yourself multiple times. Minigames are everywhere, giving you plenty of extra content to do and cosmetic items to earn.

Multiple difficulty levels mean anyone can enjoy it, either for the story and chill vibes, or on harder ones to test yourself. The travel options are nice; you have items to warp around the world, a ship to carry you, and after a certain point you get an item to speed up across the map.

Overall, I think Berseria is a solid, well-rounded addition to the Tales series, and it fixes a lot of the gameplay elements I didn't like in Zestiria. Plus, who doesn't like playing the villain of the world?

Definitely worth a play if you're in the mood for a morally ambiguous RPG!

TL;DR: 85/100 Not a terrible game, worth playing before going to Arise. But my burnout on this game will prevent me from finishing this for awhile.

Coming from a Ryu ga Gotoku background, the music is good and the sad moments hit you in the feels. Characters can be cringe sometimes but it reminds me of Disgaea 5 and I like the chemistry between the characters. Velvet's Vengeance is as tasteful as Yuri's Vigilante Justice. The overall story isn't terrible but the speed feels real slow and it drags on in some places. The combat in the beginning is nice and focusing on my experience with melee, feels reminiscent of Tales of Graces f... only that Grace's combat felt more memorable. Now for the gripes, peeves, and rants...

Combat, Difficulty, Overworld
The combat will generally make a break an action game and in this game it's repetitive and my damage always felt weak. Once you figure out a quick streamlined combo, you tend not to ever stray from it. So combat would be dialed down to just button mashing. The Difficulty didn't make it any better as the only thing that changes is purely numbers. Enemies have higher stats and somehow your damage always felt weak, unnecessarily dragging out fights. Code Red Monsters got dismissed and written out early as it doesn't offer anything substantial. Gald is never an issue if you're like me and you pick up everything. No crafting means no reason to genocide a certain mob to make that doodad. What's the point of the Geoboard, doesn't feel any faster than running and it's only purpose is to move faster to jump over gaps (Which you'll never do unless you backtrack to the older dungeons.)

This game doesn't nearly live up to the Hype that surrounds it. I think it's a pretty immature game and it's social commentary is really laughable.

First off, the gameplay had ALMOST been interesting. Its biggest issue is the crystal system. I like it on paper, but it isn't very viable in execution, especially on higher difficulties. The cast time for Eizen's revive was insanely long. I want to see someone tweak it. In fact, everything about Eizen from a gameplay POV is awful. And the break artes were definitely not made equal.

Also, the equipment drops are such a basic randomization algorithm that it's insulting. I had like 40 amber blades by the end of the game, none of them had any meaningful difference between them. I get if you want to bring in MMO gameplay, but that implementation was so lazy.

Second, the story is trash. That's right, I said it. I broke the taboo. This genocidal emo chick ain't cute nor, like the game itself, mature.

Velvet is not an enjoyable or pleasant character. Her world view is never really challenged. The story feels like it has to go out of its way to prove that every single abbey/church member is evil. But think about all the awful things she did to justify killing just one guy.

But she's willing to repeat what he did and the story doesn't hide that. It's just wrong and immature. I can't relate to a character like that. I think it'd be more relatable to want revenge but not involve innocents. Her opponents are only kinda worse because the plot needs them to be, but even then it's debatable with many of them. There's not really anything organic to werewolves killing Artorius' wife and then him wanting to destroy all free will. I think the guy who decided to take that inspiration from Naruto forgot that Obito wanted a better life. Artorius' motives are a joke.

Third, the animation sucks. I mean, come on. Me and my guys were busting our guts laughing at this game every time. I am used to kinda charmingly clumsy RPG animations, but they were so stiff. I have seen people online do better. I was surprised how much the quality fell since Zesteria and Xillia. Seems like only Magilou got all the special animations.

Fourth, there were too many skits dedicated to talking about food, world building that went nowhere, and Velvet being wife material. Besides being annoying, these took me out of the experience and broke my immersion. Aren't we supposed to be demonic pirates terrorizing the world? Why are we talking about Eizen's inability to make mini-pizzas? Also, can someone release a mod to just remove Bienfu from the game?

Bought for the story, stayed for the characters. How the band interacts with each other and grows over the course of the game makes this stand out to me as one of the better JRPGs

The best port I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Seriously, 0 issues with a japanese game on PC? Very rare sight. I could recommend it for that reason alone, it ran flawlessly and it was very enjoyable.

I finished the story (in around 70 hours) but haven't done the postgame stuff so can't speak for the whole game just yet but so far:

Great combat

Fast paced and very satisfying once you get the hang of it. Note that you can freely switch difficulties if you think it's too easy or too hard. Each of the 6 playable characters has their very own and distinct playstyle as well as unique attacks, special moves and switch-in attacks. You can customize your combo strings as well as give the AI specific objectives during and out of battle. It takes a while to get used to it, and some mechanics require you to advance through the story to unlock them but out of the whole game, combat is the one aspect where I'm completely satisfied with.

Great characters

Possibly one of my favourite troupes in any game, all the main characters are likable and have interesting motivations/personalities. One thing I commend this game for was making the world and its inhabitants more than black or white. No one in it is purely good or evil, I love grey morality in stories so it was a plus. One of the Tales Of series' trademark are character interactions called Skits, in these you will watch as your characters react to one another or events that happened in the world that honestly give the writing a huge amount of depth since you'll hear their different points of view, learn about their backstory, learn some lore about locations... The information all depends on context but regardless of the content of these skits, I found them amusing and/or intriguing 99% of the time.

Inconsistent writing

I think the plot, although basic, was pretty interesting and the way the story unfolded, progressed and came to an end was good. Not spectacular but good nonetheless. However I will say that the writing itself was a bit iffy at times. You have some great scenes and dialogue...and you also have some cringeworthy ones. Overall though, it was quite good and honestly I'm surprised to say the voice acting definitely helped in enriching the experience. Usually I don't care for VA much, but I really liked the performances (in English at least) of the main characters. Sadly, to balance it out they also added the worst voice I've ever heard in a videogame. But thankfully you only hear it for like 1% of the entire game.

Decent soundtrack

It definitely has some standout and very memorable tracks, ones that I still randomly think of long after beating it...but most just aren't noteworthy. The soundtrack is adequate, the music fits the locations and scenes it played in but I wouldn't really call the vast majority of tracks in this game great. It does the job of building the mood and that's it.

There are other aspects that I could talk about like the upgrade system, the collectibles, the sidequests, the bounties, perilous encounters (for better loot/XP/special minibosses) and NG+ possibilities but I didn't really go too deep into them so I would probably do these a disservice if I talked about them.

To close I will just mention that I thoroughly enjoyed playing and beating it, even though it wasn't enough to make me go completionist mode. And that's not a negative, it's really hard for me to 100% games anyways (unless I absolutely obsess with them). If you're into either JRPGs or action games, this game has something for you. And if you're into both, then you're in for a treat.

So for this review it is only on the game itself. From what I understand there are more of these “Tales of” games but I have no prior knowledge or experience of them. Thus again my review is on the strengths and merits of this product alone. Tales of Berseria is a game that quite surprised me and is an overall enjoyable game. Though it isn’t without its flaws.

As one can expect this is a true JRPG given the anime style character designs and bright colors. However, unlike most traditional JRPG’s it doesn’t use a turn based system for its combat. Instead there is a free movement though in an enclosed space. A close comparison I can relate this to is Kingdom Hearts. For combat it uses what amounts to a combo based system of the respected attacks each character has strangely named Artes. Each of these are unique to each character composing of magic and melee based moved. The overall set up is in a four level system that can be pulled off provided you have enough of the resource mechanics called Souls (the blue diamond things above your life bar) which increase or decrease based on certain actions that happen or you do. The premise for this was different from most JRPG’s I’ve played and at first did seem something akin to just a glorified button mashing. However, upon further inspection I have noticed the attacks are more complex than what they seem at first. Each one is suited to a different circumstance where some are multi-hitting, faster execution, better suited to air born enemies, etc. Thus while you will create the four levels of the combo these never stay permanent for long and you will be changing on the fly. This in itself does present a strategical aspect but also is quite cumbersome as you will have to constantly experiment to see what each of these Artes does and the best way to utilize them. Additionally each character has their own super attack that amounts to a Final Fantasy limit breaker.

Of the combat system however two chief flaws are present. Firstly is the targeting system. Unlike such games as Kingdom Hearts where you are free to go after whomever, this game seems to randomly select the first enemy you are facing for each character of the party. There is the option to select a different opponent but this requires to essentially pause the battle and having to scroll between each one. And should you try to attack another enemy that is not the target the system is programmed to make you move across the battlefield to the designated target. I cannot figure out why this was considered a good idea as it does make combat very tedious. The second flaw is the battles themselves are quite hectic at times. The game is ultimately designed to be more action pact and flashy which in itself isn’t a problem. Though with everyone doing their own thing in such a confined area and some of the attacks involving big explosions it does make it difficult to see what is going on at times with a very limited camera.

As to other system mechanics the game seems to employee several tacked on systems. Notably of which is the skill system. Unlike JRPG’s where skills may be pre-defined, this game uses a system where skills must be obtained from the equipment you are wearing and having its own experience point leveling based on how often you battle. There are ways to expedite this but a lot of it does boil down to competing of resources for the party as additional experience for the character and the skills are based on who does the most damage or scores the highest combo. Thus you will be level grinding in a sense for this. The conundrum is the skills are actually worth it providing increases to base attributes, health regeneration among other things. This also means you will have to be doing a lot of item management if you want you characters to have all of the same effects going on.

Other systems include a very simple weapon upgrade system that will provide some boost to attacks but is ultimately not worth it. By the time you are done crafting and move on the next area you will have a better weapon to buy. As well there is a cooking system that provides another means of healing your characters with other slight benefits but are trivial and won’t really do much for you. Likewise the game incorporates a fashion system to design somewhat the looks of your characters along with other mini systems and games to get the resources needed for these. Other than just the enjoyment factor it serves no real purpose. Lastly you have a fetching mechanic where certain NPC’s will find items for you to cook or craft with. Occasionally you will find a treasure of some sort but again it is just a side game that contributes nothing to the overall story.

As to graphics it is a mixed bag unfortunately. For the animated scenes and also mini dialogue appearances between the characters via a comic book style the drawings and color palates were nicely done. However, environments you will be traveling through, enemy designs, along with 3d animations of the NPC's are bland. In this respect more attention was put to the flashiness of the combat attacks in the respect of the 3d animation.

Though the real selling point of the game is a story which in short is a true back to basics of what the roleplay portion in a JRPG should be. I am not going to spoil this but I can say what could be seen as a basic revenge story somehow also ties in themes of questioning morality, the ethics of government, oppression themes like slavery, and the anti-hero troupes into one nicely scripted story. Thing is these additional elements are not as loudly broadcast as other games do that touch on these subjects and it is deceptively done behind what appears to be a very bright and cheerful game.

In all Tales of Berseria is a game that was worth the buy and I have enjoyed it. It has been a long time since I have played a true RPG whose story did capture my attention which reminds me why Japan normally does this better than most Western developers. While though there are flaws mainly with the mechanics, these are nothing so breaking that you cannot just play it. Definitely worth the buy.

Tales of Berseria is my first Tales game, so i can't compare it to other entries in the series. I purchased this game a couple of years ago, played it for a couple of hours than stop, because it was starting to feel like i had to grind to keep up with the game's difficultly. but, there were some game mechanics that i was not using and that made it unnecessarily harder. In general i would recommend this game if your a fan of JRPGs. the story is a pretty good revenge plot, and the voice acting is amazing.

I'm new to the series and the cast/story seemed promising, but the combat just didn't click for me, it felt all over the place to master for no reason. Regardless, I could not continue.

Maybe I'll try another, perhaps simpler 'Tales' game in the future.

I tried very very hard to finish this game. Understanding the combat, connect with the characters, follow the plot and find out the ending. It is simply not engaging nor immersive.

There are many combat mechanics, but they are not significant enough to change the tide of battle, let alone remember all of them. There are no suspense in combat encounters or boss fight, because you do not need to make any meaningful decision or tactics to win the fight.
Environment and music is forgettable. Crafting and cooking is just for min maxing.

I read quite a few reviews. I agree the story is different, it start strong with a tragedy and you are curious ,what, why it happens. It will take a long time to find out, 30 hours of slow burn. No real development for main character during those 30 hours, just the usual velvet (very exhausting).

Play this game for story, but for all the compromises. Wont a book or a manga be better ?(heck even a visual novel or cutscene compilation)

I like to thank Magilou, you are the reason i managed to finished this game.

S Tier story, S tier voice acting, Complex protagonist, hunting marks to go after, fun crafting system, and a combat system to keep your attention even while grinding for post game.

The characters are really well written, they interact with each other not only through main game cutscenes and dialogue but through post battle, or skippable skits. The skits have a lot of charm, plenty to do, collect and see.

Berseria's a tale of revenge and Velvet Crowe delivers.

A very grindy and slow JRPG, typical of other games in the genre. It's beatable with very little farming on easy difficulty, however it will be a rough struggle with long drawn out battles. Looking past the horribly balanced progression, there are so many obtainable skills that make combat very unique each time, although whether or not that is fun is up to you. You can combine 4 skills in many different orders and slots, so there is much room for experimentation. The graphics may be very outdated, but parts of the game still look really amazing and wallpaper worthy. Now onto the real bread and butter of Tales of Berseria: the story. The depth and likeability of the large cast of unique characters are what makes this game so enjoyable. There are so many little dialogue conversations that breath such life into the game and bring the world together. Seeing Velvet's story progress, whether it be the happy moments, the sad, and the heart-wrenching ones, it a journey that you will not regret, and takes a part of yourself to complete. This is one of those games that you must see to the end, no matter what! The story is not just about Velvet however, in fact, one of my favourite characters is somebody else entirely (Magilou best girl <3). The development and journeys that every character goes through are just as well thought out as Velvet's. Tales of Berseria is a hilarious, refreshing, heart-moving, tear-jerking, and very well rounded out package of a story. The extra mini games are a nice addition to switch up the unbalanced and repetitive combat experience. Overall, you will spend 90% of the time exploring and fighting pointless battles, but the rest of the 10% are where the real juice lies; and for just that small margin alone, this game is a spectacular achievement worth crying for, over and over again.

The game actually has a good story and a really likeable cast of characters. It is only because of the story and the excellent cast of characters that I put up with this game for so long. The character interactions are also fun. Even the side characters and the antagonist/s are pretty good.

But all of this is buried under a mile of shit. I don't understand why devs create these wonderful characters with a great story and then dilute it with so much tedious garbage. If this game was around 30-40 hrs with a tight focus on the main story without the constant backtracking and stuff, it would have been an outstanding game. But instead, we have this. Even in the last act, they are constantly sending you from one corner of the map to another on trivial meaningless errands. You are expected to backtrack through multiple maps, get to a port, take a ship to another port, trek through multiple maps again, pick up the quest item and trek all the way back to the starting point to hand back the item to finally submit the quest. They at least had the decency to add the geo-board at some point which makes the trek slightly faster.

The combat is absolutely dogshit. It is somehow very simple (you just mash the same button), but has these tacked on overly complex systems and also very easy since you can ignore most of these tacked on systems. The worst thing is how much combat is there. Personally, I like to explore the maps and clear all the monsters in a map, but, in this game its like torturing yourself. I should have just skipped most of the combat from the start of the game.

Graphics are serviceable, the audio is basic. The voice acting is pretty good. The game is not very demanding and runs well. There were no crashes or other stability issues.

It's good that I got this game by trading some of leftover bundle keys. Bandai Namco don't have regional pricing and the original asking price for this absolutely stupid. I wouldn't even pay 10% of that price.

Genre: JRPG

The Good:
+ The heart & soul of the game is the story and characters. The story itself is well laid out although at times it feels like the developers were making things up as they go along. Some areas of the plot do become convoluted but it isn’t as bad as some other JRPGs. What holds it all together are the characters. Even though the characters fit the typical JRPG stereotypes, all of them are well written and voiced. The game features a lot of dialogue between party members, fleshing out their motives, backstory, history etc. which brings the gameplay to a halt but it’s a worthwhile sacrifice given that the game is all about its characters. You start to become attached to them throughout the course of the game.

+ 6 character to play as, each with their own combat abilities, attacks and specials.

+ Every piece of equipment has a ‘master skill’. Fight enough battles and you will permanently learn this skill. I like this mechanic because it forces you to constantly change equipment to learn new skills.

+ Variety of locations, towns, dungeons etc. Most of them feel different from one another.

+ The main game does not require any grinding. You can play this game at a causal pace and not worry that you are too under leveled.

+ Lots of post game content which will require some grinding.

+ new game plus allows you to carry over many perks you acquired and more assuming you have enough currency to purchase everything.

+ Anime style cutscene look fantastic.

+ Incredibly fast loading times.

The Average:
+/- The combat system feels and plays like a mindless button masher. There are a lot of game mechanics that are poorly explained often requiring you to check online to see how things work. The game does however give you plenty of options in how you want things to play out. You can set up each party members routines, equipment, what attacks to use etc. giving you complete control. Despite this, though, the strategies to defeat enemies never changes regardless of who you fight.

+/- The game is not properly balanced; this is one of the easiest JRPG I have ever played. Raising the difficulty turns enemies into health sponges often dragging out a needlessly long battle, because of this, I never was intimidated by boss battles. In an odd choice, raising the difficulty level actually lowers the amount of experience you get, but it does give you items with better perks.

Conclusion:
Admittedly, I am not the biggest fan of JRPG’s. Even though this game does nothing new in the genre, what it does do, it does extremely well.

Velvet is a great main character and her story is done very well throughout the game. Her drive to achieve what she sets out to do by any means necessary and the effects others have on her are shown throughout. She also has a lot off depth and character growth making her a very memorable protagonist.

The side characters are also good and have varied personalities they can be funny but also serious and have they're own objectives and ideals (they can drone on some times but it does explain more the world so 50/50)

Combat is also enjoyable with different ways to do combos and the ability to enhance weapons and make potions/food before a fight which can give a stat advantage (can get quite grindy though in stages and there is a lot of running going from place to place)

Overall a very good game and def a good experience 8.5/10

This game is so good...like this game shattered my expectation.

I'm not an anime fan and I can get picky when it comes to rpgs

But this was amazing.

The characters are so likeable. Even the side ones. The story, interactions and character development is incredible.

I loved trying out each move I unlocked and I love that you don't have to grind...or at least when playing on moderate anyway.

It's one of those rare games where I never wanted it to end as loved it too much.

I only worry that if I play another rpg my expectation will be too high because of this game. I hope we see these characters again soon. (hell maybe they can make an anime from it like some other tales of games)

Hope to play another tales of game soon :)

Fun pirate adventure with added demon revenge. 10/10

In all seriousness, this is an excellent RPG. The gameplay features an active time battle system that looks deceptively simple but has a lot of hidden depth if you care to learn its many intricacies.

The story is compelling and the characters are some of the best developed I've ever seen, despite treading well worn anime archetypes. Just in terms of recorded dialogue the number of optional interactions is nuts.

Honestly, the only problem I could even point out is that some of the dungeons are a bit unimaginative, but this is a very minor gripe in an otherwise magnificent experience.

Good aspects of the game

This game has a pretty well thought out story, excellent cutscene animation that looks like it came out of a high budget anime, enjoyable hype sound track, pretty maps, fun item system, interesting combat system.

Bad aspects of the game

Its very repetitive as expected of a JRPG, there isn't much reason to play after finishing the main storyline, map movement is very limited which is annoying, character moves way to damn slow during the first 2 thirds of this game. It also doesn't help that monsters instantly respawn after leaving the map and they are annoying to avoid and not very fun to fight after a certain point. Getting the flying board completely changes this but its not available for a majority of the game.

Overall I still recommend this game, just for the main storyline and a single playthrough, get it on discount.

I just beat this game, and wow... This game is one of the best games I have ever played. It's my first Tales of game. but certainly not my last. Everything about this game is so good. The characters, the story, the music, the gameplay, the world, everything works in harmony with each other, and that is a recipe for something truly special.

The game's story is really good. I was hooked from start to finish, always guessing at what would happen next. I laughed, I cried, I got really immersed. The music and the world really make this game and it's story come to life. But what's a story without characters to tell it? This game's cast is here for that, and they are some of the best JRPG characters I've seen.

Velvet Crowe is one of the greatest video game protagonists I've seen. The way she develops throughout the course of the game is amazing. Same goes for the others. Rokurou, Laphicet, Eizen, Magilou, and Eleanor are also amazing characters. The characters outside of the party are really good as well. I truly think the cast of this game is top tier.

This game is one I won't forget, I really loved it. Thank you BANDAI NAMCO and everyone involved in the creation of this game. This game is an easy top 3 for me, and I will definitely check out the other Tales of games. If you haven't played this masterpiece (and that's a term I don't use lightly), do yourself a favor, and go do so.

While trying to figure out where to go sometimes got confusing, the gameplay is awesome and I absolutely love the cast that I've been introduced to. It's interesting, and if you're willing to give it time of day, a damn compelling story thus far not to mention the comedic parts do good for what they are. I don't expect to be updating my review as I'm thoroughly enjoying this experience, but I probably will once I'm at the endgame or finish it.

It’s good. I came in as a veteran of Tales of Phantasia, Symphonia and Vesperia and was pleasantly surprised with Berseria enough to sink 100 hours in. The big draw are the characters, their growth, conflicts, and interactions with each other, which carry what would otherwise be 6/10 into an 8/10.

As mentioned, where this game shines and really pulls through is the character development. Your party starts off as a bunch of villain protagonists trying to oppose the world government for selfish reasons using selfish methods that can be charitably described as chaotic evil. This leads to them being challenged, both physically and ideologically, by antagonists which are all a lighter shade of grey, emotionally manipulated and tortured, and ultimately learn from (or are perpetually scarred) by these obstacles. And finally, the gang of edgelords evolves into actually being sympathetic, likeable, but flawed people. I could write pages on each character, their journeys, and how they complement one another. A core requirement of liking these characters is how much you’re willing to tolerate the protagonist Velvet at the beginning. It never goes full grimdark, but there is a lot of self-pity to go around for the first third of the game.
While I gushed about the characters there are two downsides with the plot worth mentioning:
1. It’s a weeb game with weeb tropes
2. The tone in the last act makes the thematic conflict appear black and white. The game is still has plenty of nuance, it just says it in an overly-subtle manner.

So the story is good, is there any other reason to buy the game?

The combat. But with a warning that it can be very hit or miss depending on how much time you spend learning it. Combat occurs in real time and consists of playing as a single character in a party of 4, with the 3 others being controlled by AI. You select your moves by assigning them based on button and sequence, and executing them in combat in any order, and furthermore, each character has very different play styles and move-sets. Each dungeon has a different set of enemies with different strengths and weaknesses, and strategy consists setting up party with characters and move-sets that allows you to plough through with minimal grind and complementary to your play style. On one hand, it rewards experimentation and thinking ahead on higher difficulty settings, while accommodating a large degree of player freedom on lower difficulties. On the other, if you don’t set your difficulty just right and upgrade your weapons correctly, you end up with either a button-masher or a grind fest. All in all however, it’s a very satisfying experience once everything clicks into place.

Everything else about the game is ok. There is an omnipresent feeling that the game had a tight budget. It’s finished and bug-free, but a lot of game play elements feel scoped down to just being alright. This is best seen with the soundtrack: what’s there is utilised very well, but it’s for the most part forgettable. After spending 100 hours, there are only 5 tracks that I can remember, 3 of which are remixes of one another, and 1 is from the Tales of Zestiria OST. Graphics are much the same: passable, but outdated for 2016. That all said, the dungeon tracks while repetitive, are all very pleasant to listen to. The dungeon aesthetics are very pretty too.

Where this becomes an issue, gameplay-wise, is in the dungeon design itself. Almost all dungeons are extremely linear, with most puzzles amounting to: go down different corridor (on the same map), turn on switch, go back to main path. Why do I think this is a budget problem as opposed to just plain old bad design? Because the final dungeon actually manages to make this engaging by upping the scale and being a 3D maze, forcing you to use your noggin and remember where the different switches for different doors are located.

In conclusion,
It’s a good game with excellent characters and passable gameplay. I spent 20$, 100 hours, one heartbreak, and I have no regrets.

This is my first Tales game and while not a humongous fan of jrpgs, I do have fun with them from time to time. I'm currently playing it on the hardest difficulty.

Don't get turned off by the seemingly overly edgyness of this game. I mean...it is edgy at times (especially the beginning), but you'll seriously appreciate the dark tone (opposed to the typical happy going save the world approach) and its excellent cast of characters.

It's a dark and unique twist on things, and some of the writing is done very well to really draw you in and feel emotionally attached to the story and what's going on. The plot is consistent and generally flows along well, in a way that makes sense.

The story is also boosted by the amazing cast, who generally vibe very well with each other, and their interactions are great to see. Also, they have some great back stories that add a lot of depth. I'd recommend watching every skit possible, a lot of them were interesting and/or funny that really added to the overall characters and thus helping bolster the feeling of the story even more. Cant speak for the Japanese dub but Velvet's voice acting is fantastic.

Combat tends to be a love it or hate it situation. If you take the time to learn it's intricacies and mechanics it can be really fun, if you don't care for that kind of stuff then it's basically a mindless hack and slash. The game isn't overly grindy, but it can be if you don't take the time to learn the combat towards the end game. Learn to trigger chain combos and maintain them for as long as possible, try to capitalize on the 2x damage bonus stuns provide with mystic artes, etc. Combat is a lot more fun when you don't just use Velvet the whole time.

All in all I've put like 60hrs into this game in the past week (help) and I have to give it a solid seal of approval. I like that you don't get a goody-two-shoes main character, but a villain who's determined on fulfilling her mission. Alongside a cast of people who each have a different goal but are walking towards the same path -- making each member have their own unique principle and personalities. Btw Eizen and Magilou are the best :)

great RPG, the Characters have very layered and deep personalities, apart from the main Character.
She's good wife material, but otherwise pretty trash.

gameplay is kinda questionable, can be super fun or just plain annoying, depending on your luck or if you can put fun combos together.

the story is good overal, but found the dungeons and their puzzles progressively more annoying and obnoxiously tedious.

all in all, i recommend this.
(though it requires a community fix to properly run)

i'd say a fairly biased 7/10 is my rating.

This is a great JRPG game. The cast is one of the best I've seen in any game, period. The game play is fun with a unique take on combat I've not seen before that rewards skill and team management. An interesting plot that consistently answers every question brought up until the very end and a satisfying and intense ending. Side quest are as interesting as the main and with more enjoyable quirks to do with levelling up equipment, playing mini games and exploring the vast and interesting world.

The post game is a good challenge that provides even more character development on top of what the base game already does. The gameplay's increase in difficulty is welcomed and the achievements, for the most part, aren't too tedious to earn making them an extra layer of enjoyment when hunting them.

This game gets a recommendation just from the characters alone, the chemistry of the party you get to control is one I haven't experienced before. I laughed so much at the shenanigans that they all got involved at.

And after all was said and done, I was left feeling fulfilled. Sad that it's over.

The game's Action RPG mechanics is pretty fun! Its relatively easy to win by just spamming moves on the lower difficulties as long as you keep up with the equipment as you get it. But for those that like more challenge the higher difficulties offer a very nice challenge with appropiate rewards for those that put in the effort.

Even after finishing the game with most of the sidequests done I still have an urge to get back to it. And I will probably do it sometime, maybe soon, or a lot later.

But this game is a keeper, and I say its worth playing once, if you ever played a tales game and enjoyed them, this is an easy recommendation, if you enjoy Action RPGs, its also a big recommendation.

What a trip.

I've just finished this game on Intense mode. These are what I like about the game:

* Story is so good and will draw you in.
* Character development is amazing. Skits do a very good job of expressing characters and their personalities.
* The battle system takes some time to get used to, but nothing that a bit of experimentation won't remedy.
* Lots of mechanics to take up your time such as: cooking, voyages, sidequests, and red alert monsters

Cons:

* The crafting system is decent but requires a ton of grinding

Overall, I would play this game just for the magnificent characters and storytelling alone.

This is my first full playthrough of a ‘Tales of’ game, with a few hours of Tales of Xillia being my only other experience of the series. Up front, I was very impressed by Berseria and when the final credits rolled, I felt extremely satisfied with the experience.

In contrast to other fantasy JRPGS I have played, Berseria has an anti-hero lead – Velvet – who is a half-demon, half-human young woman driven by revenge over the murder/sacrifice of her younger brother. The tone for Velvet’s motivations is quite clear from the opening cinematic – a blood red moon fills the sky as Velvet and her brother (pre-sacrifice and revenge-fuelled badness) try to escape a demon attack. The opening couple of hours of the game explore Velvet’s early-life relationships well and lend weight to her transformation into a cold and merciless lead after her brother’s death.

After the prologue, you steadily build up a party of 6 characters (including Velvet), who for various reasons become tangled up in Velvet’s pursuit of revenge. It becomes a motley crew of half-demons (who were once human), humans and malakhim (magical spirits). Your party travels the world courtesy of a band of pirates on a sea-faring ship – there’s no sci-fi here, the world is very much sword and sorcery fantasy. The main party is probably the games biggest asset, with extremely good writing, characterisation and voice acting (I played with English voices) backing-up Berseria’s story. There are many serious and dramatic moments, but the game has frequent bouts of comic relief – typically through mini cutscenes that appear in the bottom right of the screen (activated with ‘Y’ on a gamepad) and develop upon conversations and events that come up in the course of play. Almost all of these are a delight and really demonstrate how fantastic the main voice actors/actresses’ performances are.

The story is one of the game’s strongest elements and held my interest well through a 50-60 hour playtime. There are a few twists and surprises, but otherwise the flow and pacing is consistent. Given the main cast is relatively small, there is plenty of time given to develop each party member’s back story, motivations and resolutions. I really did enjoy that while the party is drawn to Velvet’s leadership, each member has their own well-defined reasons for being on the journey. These reasons are well-explored and each character is given an opportunity to complete their own story-arc as part of the main quest. While some may be simple – such as Rokurou, who wants to become the best swordsman in the world – these complimentary stories is nevertheless very satisfying! Given the diversity of the party, your party members’ stories lend themself to seeing the world of Berseria from many different viewpoints.

Combat is action-based and initiated by encountering enemies in the overworld. It is possible to be surprised or to surprise enemy giving you a disadvantage/advantage in combat respectively. There are several difficulty levels, which allows you to select the right fit for you. Higher difficulties will force you to concentrate more during battles and apply the correct battle skills (called ‘artes’) to successfully overcome foes. A lot of information is dumped on you about combat/artes in the early hours of the game. Being unfamiliar with the ‘Tales of’ series, I did find this somewhat intimidating to begin with, but with some experimentation, the essential combat systems/tactics become apparent. For other new ‘Tales of’ players, it may be helpful to read/watch a guide about using artes to help you feel more confident with the battle system.

Overall, this is a highly enjoyable JRPG and I wholeheartedly recommend this as a starting point to any folks brand new to the ‘Tales of’ series. The story and voice acting are particularly strong, it is visually very colourful and sharp, and the combat is enjoyable without being too overwhelming on a medium/lower difficulty setting. The weakest points for me were the equipment/levelling systems, which offer little customisation for your characters compared to some other JRPGs (e.g. Final Fantasy titles like X and XII). That said, Berseria is an easy recommendation, particularly when a sale drops it’s price to under £10.

I thought the edgy protagonist would turn me off from Berseria, but I was wrong.

After playing for some 6 hours, the initial impressions are very positive.

The game starts with a clear and powerful initial hook. Many other Tales games - or JRPGs in general - suffer from bad pacing at the start of the game, but Berseria got it just right.

And I really like this iteration of the Tales combat system, deep and fluid, and there's probably quite a few more mechanics for me to unlock.

I played the Tales of Symphonia 1 + 2 and loved them, regarding Tales of Berseria though, I'm not sure if I simply became less patient with my JRPG's in general but I feel like in this one the puzzles in the dungeons can be quite bothersome/mind boggling. Been stuck with some waterfall/chalice puzzle and it was enough to make me put down the game for a while. Definetely use a walkthroughout if you're not like me and too stubborn to use a guide.
Other than that, the combat's amazing, the characters are lovable and I've got a knack for both the english & japanese voices.

This is the newest of 4 Tales games on the PC (Symphonia, Vesperia and Zestria are the others). I would recommend all 4 especially on sale. If you are familiar with JRPGs you will pretty much know how these work JRPGs work. However, unlike some games Tales keeps it's routes in anime. Character development is also a key part in this game and the skits that you can opt to watch if you don't miss them by accident will often put a smile on your face. What tends to happen with me in these games is that at first I am not quite sure about them at the start. Something bugs me a bit. In this case why do I have to scroll through the menu using the d Pad when in the last one I could use the left stick, why does the character have to dress in minimal clothing, but then I start to like the game and start ignoring the faults.

Before I start I would just like to say that the only Tales game I've completed is Tales of the Abyss. Incredible game.

Wanted to like this game. To be honest, I did like quite a lot of it. However, enemies near the end of the game became real sponges, and the combat system (at least for me, playing on normal) devolved into just trying to get a break as fast i could then dumping my hardest hitting combo. This coupled with an ehh/OK plot that had become obvious in how it wanted end, made me quit the game.

If you like JRPGs and your favourite kind of anime is Shonen, you'll probably enjoy this. If you're just curious about the Genre, grab Persona 4 instead.

Good
- Whole thing is super anime
- Characters look good
- Combat system is active, requires skill
- Magilou
- Plot in the middle sections actually pretty gripping
- Party conversations are entertaining (ESPECIALLY anything involving Magilou)
- Party AI is decent, can be customized a fair bit
- English voice acting is pretty darn good (Magilou especially !)

Bad
- Whole thing is super anime. Including cheesy, poorly written edge and lame as exposition sequences
- The whole first chapter of the game...is just written so obnoxiously edgy. It's bad. Very bad.
- Once the big bad is revealed, the plot becomes pretty meh
- The environments look mediocre as hell. Absolutely C tier.
- Music is is pretty meh overall. This is a big negative for a jrpg. At least it's not DQXI bad !
- All of the abilities on items are grindy to learn...and just pretty uninteresting overall. Lots of minor +% increases. I get you're supposed to stack a bunch of them, but seriously they are boring as hell.
- Some grinding required during main story if you aren't a god at the combat
- Enemies become absolute sponges late game, started becoming a massive chore to kill
- Different monsters require different combos to be setup to be optimal, and it's a huge pain in the ass to rejig everything if you're trying to be optimal. Wish there was a way to save builds.

Ive been a fan of the tales series for over 10 years now. I've loved every single one of them and this one is no different. At this point I'm only 10 hours in or so and it definitely has a much different theme than any tales game I've played. It has a darker more mature storyline that is very emotionally driven for the main character of this story Velvet while having one of the best combat systems of any tales game yet. Overall if you are a fan of the series, or new and looking for a great story driven jrpg with lots of action packed intense combat look no further this is a must have for any rpg player

This review is for those who are considering buying the game but are unfamiliar to the franchise.

As my first experience of a Tales game, I was so enthralled by the franchise that I bought every single Tales game I could get my hands on after I completed this. I seriously enjoyed Tales of Berseria. If you like JRPG's and you also like action games: buy this. It has its flaws, yes, but it's an enjoyable experience despite them.

The game does well with character interaction through the use of skits: these are optional story segments that you unlock as you complete the main quest or explore the areas that allows the player to see into the motivations and personality of each character. The tone of these skits vary from serious and philosophic, to cringey and goofy. But they are delightful to interact with and for that reason, I don't have a favourite character. They're all my favourite.

The combat is fairly novel and takes a bit to get used to. You can switch characters as you like (although I mostly stuck to Velvet) and they each have their own skills sets and abilities. You can learn passive skills through wearing certain items and collecting experience through combat (kind of like Final Fantasy IX) - I've always liked this system as it encourages you to wear and collect as many different items as possible, not just the ones with the most armor or magic, etc. The upgrade system is good, but getting the ingredients can be a grind and you won't need to upgrade your equipment to the maximum possible level to complete the game.

Oh and the card mini game is pretty fun and you get cool rewards. Speaking of, the customisation is very cute and you can unlock quite a few options as you progress through the game.

I would suggest playing the game in Japanese and reading subtitles if you are an English user (although sometimes you might miss a few things in battle). But each to their own.

Interesting story, beautiful visuals, lovable characters, responsive controls, great soundtrack.

Story progression and battles are fairly quick, letting you move through the game at a satisfying pace.

The battles feel dynamic and fast paced, moves and combos look and sound satisfying.
Combat can be a little repetitive sometimes, but that's a minor flaw which can be remedied by increasing game difficulty and making clever use of battle mechanics.

Skits are interesting to watch and never feel like a chore.

Overall a somewhat overlooked gem that deserves more recognition.
Highly recommended to anyone that enjoys JRPGs.

My favorite Tales game. It's just flat-out awesome in every way.

The combat is fast, fluid, and brutal. The unconventional combo-building lets you use a staggering variety of moves to dance through the battlefield, and it only gets faster when more artes are learned that chain into each other naturally. Add in Break Souls to power through the onslaught of foes, and then there's Switch Blasts to let you seamlessly control all six characters without missing your combo.

I never could've imagined it possible for any game to top DMC3 but you literally control six characters in a 3d action game by yourself... or with friends, since most Tales games support local multiplayer for the battles. I played through the whole game with a friend who never stopped playing as Velvet, so I juggled the other five chars and it just works beautifully.

The storytelling is top-tier, with great English VA and an abundance of well-written dialogue covering the whole extensive world. The story is unconventional, because instead of kids on a journey to save the world, you ostensibly play as villains, more concerned with chasing personal revenge rather than handling pest problems or diplomatic snafus. Even the NPCs are worth listening to. I read every single line of dialogue in the game and every line was captivating and immersive.

The gear system is rather complex, but not hard to understand. I've spent many, many hours just chewing up all the loot from battles between play sessions, but even that was rather enjoyable since I could fast travel to Hellawes and listen to that amazing Motoi Sakuraba music for hours on end while crushing gear.

I can't praise this seamless masterpiece enough. It's more than worth your money.

I'm a fan of the Tales Of series. I came across them randomly when I got Tales Of The World on PSP years ago.
Then I started playing the rest of the titles and fell in love with the Tales Of universe.

Tales Of Berseria is a great game that offers a new point of view. You're not the Hero looking to rescue your friends and save the world. You're a bloodthirsty young woman who wants to kill those who did her wrong. I honestly loved this game. It's so wonderful to see the evolution of the characters, to get to know them and understand their motives. You FEEL for them. Really.

I really recommend this game, whether you're new to JRPGs or a veteran, whether you're looking for something to kill time or a new title to fall for.

I've never played any Tales games aside from this so that may be why I didn't enjoy anything story related in this but holy fuck Koi-Koi is fun. The only reason I progressed at all was so I could get to the next area to find a new opponent. Koi-Koi is easily the best part of the Tales experience.

I give Koi-Koi a 4/5. Docking 1 star because of the actual game itself bogging down the card hype.

I love the steam version of Tales of Berseria, mostly because of the remote play option that is lacking on the PS4. My son lives with my ex and it's no fun to play a game if I can't share play with him and all he gets is a blue screen. Steam takes care of that nicely.

50+ Hours in so far.
The story is solid enough to keep me wondering and driving forward on the twists and turns.
The music isn't really memorable, fighting in the battle system is more customizable than usual and that can make it more fun, for some.
Definitely has some nice replayability with alot of difficulty modes, you can change characters you use in battle to freshen it up whenever you'd like.

Buy it and be part of Magilou's Menagerie everyone.

At 71 hours of gameplay and finally finishing the story I think I can fully recommend Tales of Berseria now.

Tales of Berseria is a unique Tales of game in which the main theme is darker compared to the other Tales of games lighter mood. Its main theme is about vengeance being the main protagonist's driving force and goal. This darker tone in no means makes it a bad Tales of game but in the contrary makes it a unique a very well made game. It has a good story which most JRPGs are lacking these days and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

The combat has been significantly improved compared to Tales of Zestiria and the combos felt fluid whenever you would chain each attack and would sometimes lead to combos looking very good depending on how you would set your attacks. The only small downside to this was it would sometimes turn into a button masher but it wasn't that big of a deal. The AI was good even on default tactics which you could set on the fly. The only minor problem to the AI would sometimes be them running away for a bit then attacking but still good overall.

What stands out from Tales of Berseria was the cast. The cast in Berseria was probably one of my favorite in any JRPG I've ever played. They each shine and have their own moments and felt well developed with each of them having a motive and interacting to one another and the environment. The evolution of each character is evident in the story and contributed to the story of the game. One standout character that I would have to mention was Magilou. To me she had the best character in the game and her funny and quirky attitude would entertain me and is one of the big reasons why the cast in this game was excellent.

The only negative things I have to give to this game was the dungeons which have still felt the same since the older Tales of games which still felt repetitive and didn't have that much good designs. And the thing I hated the most was the backtracking. The backtracking in the game sometimes felt like a chore especially since you only get a means of walking faster maybe about halfway through the game. Oh and I'm 50/50 with the ending, the story was made really well but had to end on that note but still had some positive parts in the ending.

To be honest, Berseria is now one of my favorite JRPGs and I fully recommend picking up this JRPG gem especially if you are a Tales Fan.

This is my first Tales game. I got it from the Humble Namco Bundle a while ago, and now that I have completed it, I am absolutely speechless. This quickly became one of my favourite games of all time. It's by no means perfect but in my opinion, it has so much great content that it's worth getting at full price.

The story is amazing! Honestly, it's the best part about the whole game. You just get so attached to the characters, and there are tens of hours of voiced dialogue and cutscenes to keep you entertained. You will laugh, and you will cry. I got sucked in the world of Berseria, and the lore is one of the most interesting in any video game I have played. Often times, while you are navigating through a dungeon, you will get an option prompt on the lower-right corner. If you press the Y button, a mini-cutscene will activate. A lot of these dialogues are not only charming, but they also reveal a lot about the world, characters and lore. The whole story was a journey I wish I could experience again.

The gameplay is also extremely fun. One minor complaint is that I played on normal difficulty and found it a little bit too easy. The game has an interesting combo system where you can assign different skills to the buttons on your controller. Each button can hold 4 skills, which will activate with each consecutive push. I experimented quite a bit, and simply combining different combos and trying them out for each character felt so rewarding. Skills also have different elements assigned to them, and some work better for some monsters, while others work better for others. Also, I loved learning each character's play-style, because they all have different types of skills and special attacks. My favourites were by far Velvet, Magilou and Eleanor. I personally played the most with Velvet, because I often couldn't be bothered with switching.

The main complaints I have are slight annoyances but I feel they need to be addressed. If you're bothered by slow pacing, then the game might not be for you. The story, while great, often times drags on. There is quite a bit of filler added in the game, which is not bad, but it takes so long that you sometimes forget what you were originally planning to do. What is more, the dungeon/island designs are very mediocre. Most of them are linear corridors with only some optional paths you can take to find treasure or secrets. Towards the end, I got very annoyed with the backtracking the game kind of forces you to do. It personally felt like a cheap way to extend the game time, though this seems to be a common issue in JRPGs.

Nevertheless, I highly recommend Tales of Berseria. Even if you haven't played any previous Tales games, it's a good entry point, with one of the best stories and characters in any game. The combat system will also keep you entertained, and you will never feel forced to grind.

Final Score: 9/10

Combat is okay, a bit repetitive at times but it you can go in-depth if you want. It also works as a hack and slash. I like the story. The skits might not be for everyone but it's okay to me since I play a lot of JRPG and watch a lot of anime. The characters are great since they have different motivation and goals, which makes the team interesting.

Tales Of Berseria is a prequel to the previous game in the series Tales Of Zestiria. Berseria is one of my favorite games in the Tales Of series with Vesperia, Symphonia, Abyss, Eternia and Phantasia being some of my all time favorites. I originally bought this game on release on PS4 and had around 80 or so hours to do everything in the game. As previously mentioned as someone who has been a Tales Of fan for over a decade now this is in my top 5 games in the series.

Really great JRPG, the battle mechanics are fun, very simple, hard to master and you feel good wen pulling off combo with character switching and mystic artes chains, very satisfying. I appreicate the shorter mystic artes too. It got to the point where we were watch movies (they were that long) short and sweet in this game thanks namco. Also, the characters are awesome, and the story is typical JRPG stuff if you are into these convoluted stories you know what you are getting into. However, the story here is simpler than most tales games, so you will enjoy it more imho. Like everyone else the main gripe I have with the game are that the environments are a bit bland. Don't get me wrong still one of the best if not best looking tales, but game came out in 2016 should have took advantage of the tech more ie ps4 and 2016 gpu's. Other than that it is my favorite tales game.

P.S.
I hear Zesteria sucked but I'm tempted to buy that game just cuz this game is so cool.

Tales of Berseria has a cool and fun battle system and an interesting story. For the battle system, you can mix and match your own combos and attacks to how you see fit, making battles more exciting. By no means is the game hard, as you can grind and out level enemies if you're having trouble (I'm pretty sure one of the options keeps enemies around your level so you don't get bored by out leveling everything). The game itself is pretty long with a nice story. I'd say the game is worth the full price with how much you can get out of it.

Berseria is a prequal to Zestiria, and far outweighs Zestiria on personal story level. While we lost the big nuances that went into making Zestiria entertaining, Berseria hits right in the feels and makes the world both games reside in so, so depressing. Its every bit worth the 60$ price tag.

I don't think the game loop is as good as Zestiria, but there were some large improvements on the convinence end so it passes pretty easily.

I really wish they had brought in Sorey's voice actor for Oscar, would have been a fun little easter egg.

First, off the hours displayed are about 80% idle time, so don't trust this review based on that. With that out of the way let's get started!
Gameplay
As with the other Tales games I have played combat starts off very slowly. You are limited to about 6-7 artes for a good while. Souls which are the basis for how many attacks you can do are limited to three base five max for a good chunk of the game. As you progress and upgrade yourgear both will increase. As well as your learning more artes leading to longer and flashier combos. Many details of the combat system is taken from Zestiria, however it is more well utilized here. Stuns and status aliments will reduce soul count for the affected target and give them to the attacker. Weak point combos still exist, but have to be worked for making them not always the best option. The upgrade system has vastly improved, although it still needs lots of grinding the amount is severely reduced. Instead of requiring the same weapon it now requires materials gotten by breaking down any matching weapon. The random skills which are attached to weapons do not matter enough to grind for. Bosses optional or not drop items that help to improve yourself, giving reason to go out and challenge powerful foes. However, difficulty is lacking even on intense you'll have to limit yourself if you want a challenge. Sidequest since they end with bosses allowing for more ways to power yourself up do feel very rewarding.

Story
Things seem to start off slow with our protagonist being a village girl, but things pick up very quickly turning into a revenge story. An unlikely group with different goals forms and we head on our way to kill one shepherd. I don't know what else to say here as I'm trying hard to not spoil.

Characters

Velvet
Velvet at first seems like merely an edgelord on the prowl for nothing but vegenance. However, she is still very much human.. for the most part. Although, she is willing to do much to help with her revenge she isn't so far gone to forget compassion or empathy. Just like any normal person for every negative emotion she feels there's also a positive one. She can cook up a clean meal and clean like nobody's business. Her human side can mostly be seen with her interactions with younger character, even if things do start off shaky.

Rokurou
This guy isn't a meathead.. he's a swordhead. He has a clear cut goal and works hard to reach it, just don't get in his way, ok? When he's not talking about fighting might be nice to have a drink with him. If Velvet is the sister Rokurou is the 2nd oldest brother.

Magilou
I am usually not a fan of comidic relief characters, but I'll be damned if she isn't the best character in this game. She didn't make me laugh much, even still her antics were one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. There's a lot more to this witch than the surface level, He certainly has some interesting takes at the very least.

Numbah 2
I don't really know what to say here without feeling I'm spoiling, so I'll just say they grow up so fast.

Eizen
You must have the dev-- I mean reaper's own luck. He can seem a uncaring at times, but he's just a bit stoic. Totally a nerd at heart rather it be about treasure, architecture, etc. A strong man for certain to live through the reaper's curse. And an obsessive older brother.

Eleanor
She's like Sorey if it didn't take the end of the game for him to develop enough to care about him. A pure hearted maiden who wishes only to save the world. She's probably the only part of the main cast that can't be seen as morally grey. She does struggle between figuring out what is right and wrong. However, she never loses her sense of purity.

I'll leave the side cast out. A quick note about the antagonist, just like the protagonist most of the them feel human. Melchior did bring back up a problem I had with Zestiria and he who shant be named was a bit of a strange one. Otherwise the antagonist stick around long enough and have enough of a backstory to make me genuinely care about them. I had a real good cry and had to put down my controller at some point due to them,

Others
I'm not really a graphics person since my glasses only give me +20 accuracy on top of my base 0, but I do think it looks very nice especially the cutscenes as in all Tales games. The soundtrack is also pretty nice,

Conclusion
Overall I really enjoyed this experience. I cannot remember the last time seeing a game over made me cry, or having to put down my controller after a really hideous cry. Velvet made for a good protagonist and the supporting cast was also amazing. It does have a few kinks here and there, but I can't complain too much. I might even become a Tales fan after this wonderful experience.

Holy s*** yes! Tales of Berseria is amazingly well written, intense and emotional, every thing you would expect from a story driven JRPG. I'm someone who rarely ever gets emotional (I think the last time i did was when I saw Red Dog at the cinema) but damn, as the story moves forward you really start to get attached to the characters especially during the climax.

also easier than Tales of Zestiria, if your planning on playing ToZ I highly recommend playing ToB first since it's set before it.

A bloody good 10/10 from me!

Tales of Berseria is a game about a lady who's also very angry.

The Demonblight spreads across the land, turning people into demons and terrorizing the lands. Only exorcists are capable of stemming the tide. Velvet Crowe lives with her brother and Brother-in-law in the small town of Aball, seven years after her sister was murdered by demons.
Things go bad, the moon goes crimson, and Velvet's brother Laphicet is killed and tossed into a big hole. Now everyone can see Malakhim, elemental spirit people, and Arthur, Velvet's brother-in-law is basically mayor of the world.

Oh, and Velvet is turned into a demon and locked away for three years, so she can grow her hair out and get madder.

Berseria is the prequel to Zesteria, and like every second-in-a-series game from Tales, its a lot darker and much more depressing. During your travels with Velvet, you meet a rag tag group of dirt bags, who grew on me over time, they're not as one dimensional as they first appear, which helps carry you through the fifty hour journey.

The combat system is neato burrito. Each button has a string of attacks that can be combo'd together. So not only can you customize your combo strings on each button, you can mix them together to create new combo strings with different button combinations. Some characters also have ways to extend their combos, Velvet is the best example, as long as she has 3 diamonds on her soul gauge, she can activate a super mode that rapidly drains her health in exchange for extended combos that always end in a powerful final attack before she goes back to normal mode.

BUT

BUUUUUUTT listen, listen to me. H-hey, stop, listen. Come back, don't ignore me.

Stop running. I'm faster than you.

As long as you have three diamonds in your soul gauge, you can activate Velvet's super mode. So you can basically activate your super mode, gain health on your strike, and continue your combo indefinably. If you can knock your opponent into the air before hand, well its practically over for them.

I've seen a lot of combo videos from various Tales games at this point, it seems like all the games are like this in some way, but Berseria makes it so easy to just go nuts and dish out damage, I was dropping some bosses to half health at the start of fights with this. Not the later guys, because I'm bad and thought Lion King was a documentary for the first third of my life, but the early stuff I tore apart.
Made me feel big. Made me feel like a big man.

I ended up getting attached to these dirt munchers, they're all flawed, terrible people. But they're kind of supposed to be. Even so, they still have their own personal honors and creeds. They tend to dig themselves into you after a few hours. Like a tape worm, or that fungus I tear from my back and wipe on people.

Its always a shame when you have to say goodbye to your cartoon pals at the end of an RPG. And its never really the same on NG+, when you did everything and saw all the character interactions. There's some neat post-game stuff you can do however, like a kind of annoying dungeon and a secret fight that I won't spoil.
A few secret fights, actually. But three of them in particular are cool.

I haven't played Zesteria, and from what I've been told, a few things cross over. But I don't know if I really want to continue this particular duology. Berseria is a prequel, not the first game in the two-part series. But at the same time, I feel like it might ruin it for me if I go back and play the first one.

Other than traveling around the world being kind of a chore and some character stuff dragging on for what feels like a day in Sunday school, I really liked Berseria. I would recommend to play with a controller, if not just because that's how I played it.

Is it my favorite game ever? Not really, but its something I think about every now and then. Go get it on sale, it practically sells for the same price as a lunch from time to time. I've also seen it in the $20 or less sections at the Wal-Marts I was kicked out of, but you'll usually find it cheaper online for PC.

Tales of Berseria gets 9 angry ladies out of 13 or something.

The world's most popular fruit is the tomato.

This curator exists solely for revenge and tax evasion.

Trully a masterpiece.

I generally dont play jrpgs, they seem to be tedious with a lot of repetitive elements and not very satisfing combat, the stories they present are always from the point of the goodie goodies with big swords and big dreams about saving the world. Well Berseria is diffrent, Very very diffrent.

Its a story about revenge, hatred, saddness and most importantly - finding oneself in the darkest of placeces and getting back from it

The combat is very devil may cry, whith lots of diffrent characters, whos abillities are diverce.
I wouldnt be writing this reviev if the story would be bad, would I ?
The world of Berseria is pretty typical for jrpgs ngl, but its still interersting.
Music is super fun ( The Way Katz ifuknowwhatimean :3 )
and so on

U may not like it if dont like edgy shieet, otherwise a must play
