Zudem Preis ... (5/5)

I learned of this game after falling in love with The Solus Project. The Ball is a delightfully creative game that not only has a mysterious and awesome story, but is impressive on a technical level. Hard to believe this was made by only a few people. Definitely worth full price, and a steal if it's on sale.

Amazing game. I just played half hour but plan to play it full as soon as I finish developing my game. I loved the graphics and the ball physics is simply amazing. The puzzles are good, neither very hard, neither very easy. Being an UDK developer myself I can say that The Ball is one of the most creative and beautifull games made in UDK Engine. Thumbs up.

The Ball is the predecessor... kinda, to the Solus project, which is not a bad game... but now reflecting on some of the imagery and concepts in both game, especially Solus... maybe their association with Tripwire is not strictly business, perhaps they share ideologies. Some of the imagery in Solus, included a species driving them selves do harvest their children to prolong their own lives... images of alien fetuses mummified in bowls... these twisted iconography had to come from somewhere.., which is why I cannot recommend wither game... they're defeatist to the core, and promote positive reinforcement of false dichotomies... In other words, is using the scifi setting to push the narrative that the world's problems are too big for you to even get involved in, let alone help solve, and that those in power, will absolutely always be corrupted into evil.

Portal meets Indiana Jones. The puzzles are intuitive, with just enough variety without overstaying its welcome. A passable distraction for a few hours, especially considering it was made by three people.

One of the most boring and janky games I've played. Some puzzles are alright but dragging your huge ball through all kinds of narrow tunnels in this game is really clumsy. I would've put up with that but then they introduced enemy monsters which you have to kill by rolling your huge ball, and they come at you from all sides way too fast for you to be able to turn around and roll your ball at them. To add insult to injury, some of these monsters send some kinda projectiles towards you which often kill in a single hit, unless we hide behind our huge balls, which due to the clumsy mechanics is not easy to do. If they simply concentrated on the puzzles and saved the enemies for another game, I'd have continued playing but now it's just a drag. Shame I kept this in my backlog for so long, would have surely refunded otherwise.

So the comparisons to Portal are inevitable, but The Ball definitely stands on it's own. A lot of detail and attention has been put into the piston.. gun... thing that is used to manipulate the ball. The ball itself does a fantastic job of conveying it's weight and momentum too. Watching it crush a flock of monsters is visceral and fun to watch. So the game play is fun, and the graphics are detailed and very good looking. Unfortunately the game drags on a bit longer than it should, and the story, told through lush, hieroglyph loading screens simply isn't very interesting. Adding combat was a cool idea, but it gets tedious after a while. There are only so many ways you can crush something with a giant ball. Combine that with puzzles that never get very difficult and the game's length (18 hours, and I took my time) is hard to justify.

All in all it makes for some fun afternoons of play, but I can't recommend it as anything other than a mediocre example of a relatively new and exciting genre. It gets tedious after several hours, and the 10$ price point is too high considering how short the game is.

This game is... not great. The puzzles are decent, but everything else is a chore. Every area of every level is massively large, and you'll spend way more time moving from a to b and figuring out the correct path to take than you will actually solving puzzles. The sfx are terrible and will drive you mad quickly. The plot is nonsensical and the writing is terrible.

On top of that, definitely do not play this game if you are achievement hunting: 2 of the 5 progress achievements didn't trigger, and multiple other achievements are stupidly grindy. Stay away.

5 hours in and completed the first 3 levels. So have less than 10% of players.
More walking than puzzles. There is a lot of walking and dragging or pushing your ball around across those distances. Put the puzzles closer. 4th level is a little better. Maybe half way through now.

Its really a dated piece. Not a horrible game. Not a good game either. Its, bland, extremely boring in spots. Not something you would really want to toss money at. I had basically gotten it free in a Solus Project bundle, so no real loss to me. However I couldn't really recommend this game all by itself as a direct purchase. Sorry.

I got The Ball when it came out in 2010 but sadly, I've never got around to play it through. I remember playing the first level and just leaving it there since I had many action games around that time. What a pity that was because ten years later, I finished the game and I had a great time with it!

I would say that The Ball is not too heavy on puzzles but it balances gameplay, story and aesthetics almost perfectly. The architecture is simply gorgeous: even though Unreal Engine 3 might look dated in 2020, you can expect some jaw-dropping scenery throughout the campaign. The puzzles are perhaps not the most difficult one but the fun factor is definitely there with the physics elements. The developers even included combat in the game and I was surprised it worked this well!

The story, however, easily could have been fleshed out more. It is interesting overall and the game's setting is indeed unique but much of the story is hidden in secret collectibles. If these story bits were more included in the main gameplay, then it would easily elevate the game's already thick atmosphere.

The Ball is an easy recommendation even at full price and it is a must-play for puzzle game fans!

Interesting first person puzzle game that has been sitting in my back-log for almost a decade at this point. I think part of the issue is the images and overall ambiance of it in the store seemed to put it as more of a horror game like amnesia or the like. In reality though its actually very much a puzzler, and it 'anticipated' the first person puzzle genre by almost 5 years.

Playing back through it I needed to muck through the settings files to make the resolution more proper for a modern screen but that was very doable, and overall I actually did enjoy playing through it. Not much in the way of music, but the ambient sound effects and overall graphical aesthetic were both pretty enjoyable, and its worth poking at if you have liked the more modern first person puzzle games (The Talos Principle, The Witness, etc). It is more primitive than those, but given its age that is to be expected, but really it is worth giving this oldie a shot.

It's like the Companion Cube levels from Portal. Without the emotional attachment, but certainly worth the while.

The ball being a puzzle solver as well as weapon is a neat idea. On one hand you have this mighty wrecking ball that kills in one hit, but it's sluggish movements still makes you feel frantic and helpless at times, which is a good trade-in to never make the player feel too overpowered. And the boss fights also make good use of it with their own mechanics.
The levels/worlds feature a lot of clever puzzle concepts around the use of the ball, often making you think outside the box. Though, I would have wished for a little more consistency with already established mechanics instead of learning new ones around each corner, but I can't say it caused me problems. The game guides you well through its challenges, I never felt overwhelmed or lost. It tends to get a bit too easy in fact, puzzles never get too complex, and a few of them can simply be brute-forced. The game also saves every bit of progress even if you die.
I liked the Mayan setting, moving through those ancient temples and machinery is quite an underrepresented sight in gaming. And while the feeling of reactivating the ancient Mayan machinery was enough for me as is, the story built around it is unnecessary for it is wasted potential. The finale does not resolute any of the mysteries built up during the game, and was overall pretty dissatisfying.
Graphically it's alright. Not amazing, but not too shabby either. I usually set my expectations low, so I was not disappointed. The sound design tends to be a bit inconsistent with effects and audible clues, which sound flat in contrary to the atmospheric soundtrack.

I feel that this game had a clear vision and some genuine thought put into it. Terrible plot aside, I've had genuine fun while it lasted. A neat idea that got well translated to gameplay.

THE BALL

A puzzle-adventure game with action segments

Rating 6/10

Purchased For: Free

The Ball feels like an extended UE3 tech demo that's been fleshed out into a full game. This means there is a lack of real plot, narrative and character. Each new area feels like an excuse to show off puzzles or the environment rather than the story dictating locations and pacing.

Puzzles and combat are at the heart of the game and they both work together nicely with neither one taking precedence over the other. The game starts by dropping you into an undiscovered and mysterious ancient civilization buried deep beneath the earth. Of course like most ruined and ancient civilizations it comes beset with dangers; luckily you also find the ball of the title as well as a hand held artefact that controls its movement. The ball is a large and powerful weapon but also unwieldy, you can either magnetically draw the ball towards you or punch it away using a piston of varying power. Control of the ball is key as it'll be both your protector from arrow traps and monsters as well as solving numerous puzzles littered around the ruins.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=271770381

Combat is bowling on a grand scale as you launch the ball towards the enemy watching as they topple like skittles; it's a great effect and really feels like it has an impact when it strikes down a horde of mummies. And they do come at you in hordes with combat often a quick affair as you fire the ball around trying to knock down as many of them in one go as possible. Firing the ball with too much power will strike down more enemies but also leave you vulnerable as you slowly draw the ball back, it's a fine balance and knowing when to fire the ball as well as when to bring it back is key to survival. Thankfully the combat never overstays it welcome and after clearing a room of enemies you'll end up with a new puzzle to solve.

These puzzles are probably the highlight of the Ball, it will obviously be compared to Portal and whilst not quite as ingenious the puzzles are still well thought out, neither being too complicated nor too easy. The majority of the puzzles require you to guide the ball over various obstacles to reach buttons that allow you to progress. The element of solving puzzles and exploring new areas as you descend further into the ruins is what makes the game.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=247173466

Once you've completed the main storyline there are a number of survival arenas which are hectic battle against the clock as waves of monsters stream into small arenas as you fire the ball around and set off traps in a desperate attempt to survive the round before it starts again. They are a nice time diversion after completing the game but no more than that.

I'd like to start this review by saying, the Ball wasn't a bad game, I just found myself bored a bit to often to confidently recommend.

The game itself functions well enough. I never encountered any game breaking glitches, never sank through the floor, lost the ball, or had a button simply not work. It plays just fine in that regard. The ball control is a bit wobbly in terms of getting it to shoot precisely, but it's very slight, and most of the puzzles allow for that little bit of wiggle room.

The puzzles are pretty easy, and never really force you to do any huge mental gymnastics. The hardest part of the game are the survival levels and those just involve surviving waves of enemies. The enemies are easy enough to kill (rolling the ball over them) but they're a non-threat for the the campaign and appear so sparingly in the campaign they almost feel a little out of place. They aren't there as a puzzle impediment like the turrets in portal, most times (a few exceptions), they're mostly just thrown at you to be a momentary antagonist.

The story is interesting. However you only get it through finding secrets and once you've clicked out of the text screen there's no way to recall that text without playing through the level and finding the secret again, so if you miss one that's unfortunate. The secrets themselves are easy enough to find, you just have to be patient and willing to hunt around for hidden alcoves and the like. They do however have a stage selector so if you really want to play a level over it's easy to do.

The game looks nice enough. The graphics are consistent, and I never saw any graphical glitches, but the ball itself is a bit annoying. Even transparent it's very noticeable and still impedes vision to a degree. The problem there lies in the design of the ball. The ball is made up of two parts. A round solid peice, and a complex framework. Everything fades out except for the framework, which there is a lot of, causing a sort of cage like effect on your vision.

Overall the game was alright. I don't regret buying it, or playing it. If you're looking for a game similar to portal, while this is in the same vein (logic puzzler), it isn't in the same league. If you want to have some fun walking through mildly Aztecian ruins, smashing some zombies, and solving some puzzles give it a shot.
