Great collection. Worked flawless for me.

Talespin is the weakest game out of them all. Now i know why this was the only game in the collection i never played/owned as a kid. Ofc thats just my opinion tho.

Nothing bad to say about this. Get it.

Old but gold. The Capcom Disney NES games have always been top tier, and this is a great collection of the best ones with extra artwork, time trials and a boss rush mode. Wait for it to go on sale, because the asking price is a bit steep for a ROM collection.

Huge Nostalgia Trip. For Some...

I will recommend this game to people who enjoy hard retro games, 8 bit music and have a controller to play with.
I haven't played the originals but I really enjoyed the shows they are based on.
The games were great when they were first released. But despite how simple they are, they are definitely not as intuitive as super mario bros.
Also as tradition for nes games they are incredibly hard, although capcom has added a rewind button so you can practise and undo your mistakes.
The music is great if you enjoyed the show and you bit crushed parodies, however it can not be adjusted in game only by volume on your device not in game.
The achievements are hard and yet mostly reasonable.
Quick math will tell you that this game is a great deal, soundtracks, artwork and 6 games all for 20 dollars is a great deal, however I would still wait for sale, for while it is a very reasonable price. I personally feel better knowing I paid as little as possible for games that are too hard to complete (for me), but maybe that's just me.

This is a rompack bundled with an emulator and some garnish. It includes six of Capcom's famous Disney-based games from the NES era. Packed with a pretty game launcher, a few extra game modes like time attack or, the surprisingly entertaining, boss rush and a small art gallery. As far as the games themselves go, most of them were quite popular back in the day, so the nostalgia factor is strong with this package. Arguably though even back then, they were fairly overrated. Much of their popularity was owed to the great animated series they were based on, rather than their own merit.

Rescue Rangers and its sequel, while rather decent, were trivially easy. On the other hand, Darkwing Duck was hellishly difficult with sadistically designed boss fights. Kudos to anyone who managed to finish that game without cheating, an impressive achievement that one would be. While TalesSpin was just awkward, Baloo seems to be flying a bucket instead of a plane. If this rompack did not come with a rewind feature, which allows you to turn time back to before your latest misstep, I doubt I would bother finishing those two games. I doubt I would bother getting past the first level in fact. The clear exception to all this is DuckTales and its sequel. Both excellent platformers, if a bit short. But that exception, only serves to confirm the rule.

So do I recommend this rompack? Well, I would be hard pressed to, particularly when the highlight is DuckTales and there is a DuckTales remake available on Steam already. In fact, I would recommend that one instead. As far as this one goes, maybe for people who want to also revisit the originals it would make sense to try it. So, if you have played these games before and do feel the nostalgia, I'd say buy this package, on a sale.

These games really remind you what its like to live your childhood from the NES days all over again. I thought it would never happen and these games would not see the light of day but it did and Capcom did a great job of putting this together. The only gripe is that the Little Mermaid is absent from this collection which should have been an essential game included in this collection. Maybe they will release a Disney Afternoon Collection 2 which has Mickey Mousecapade , Adventures in the Magic Kingdom and also Little Mermaid.

Other than this, I'm just happy to play these fun Disney Classics again after so many years.

As somebody who grew up with a NES and watching the Disney afternoon cartoons, I can't really review this objectively because I'm gonna view it through nostalgia-tinted-glasses, but I'll try my best.

First off the package:

- This thing collects all the NES Disney games that Capcom developed and published in the 90's. Those are DuckTales 1+2, Chip&Dale 1+2, Darkwing Duck, and TaleSpin.

- Everything runs through an emulator. You get the standard fare of these bundles in terms of visuals which is one default border and three screen settings (4:3, Pixel Perfect and stretched) and you can use a scanlines filter so the games kind of look like they're played on old CRT tvs.

Every game has 3 game modes which are play the game, time attack and boss rush.
Play the game is self-explanatory, time attack is a speedrun mode where you play through the game normally and compete for the best on online leaderboards and boss rush is the same but you just try to beat the bosses as quickly as possible.

- The standard games also let you save at any point in time and allow you to rewind in case you made mistakes, so even if you're not good at games or have some sort of disabilty, the games are made accessible and easy to beat for everyone.

Next the pros:

- The games seem to be emulated faithfully to the originals and I personally didn't feel any added input delay, but I'm also not speedrunner so take that with a grain of salt.

- The game's quality is a mixed bag with the highlights being DuckTales 1+2 and Darkwing Duck. Pretty well-designed games, that have aged well in my opinion and aren't too much of a time investment to beat.

- The collection comes at a fair price point.

- Savestates and rewind features for people with disabilities or low frustration threshold.

- The games look fantastic for their time and still look surprisingly good today.

The Cons:

- Time Trials/Boss Rush force you to play games in a pretty small window with no option to change it.

- Some games have aged poorly or flat out suck. TaleSpin is a terrible shooter and hard for all the wrong reasons, Chip&Dale 1 has poor level design, is way too easy and has the most boring boss design ever, while Chip&Dale 2 is better but also on the mediocre side in terms of 2D platformers.

- Time Attack does not have separate leaderboards for different difficulty settings, boss rush doesn't have difficulty settings at all and the game allows you to pause during both modes, which is not in the spirit of speedrunning a retro platformer.

- No sound settings to adjust the volume, which is weird to not add but not a big deal.

The Verdict:

9/10 as a collection. It does what it should do, is fairly priced and a blast from the past for retro connoisseurs.

6/10 in terms of gameplay quality, as 1/3 are great, 1/3 are mediocre and 1/3 are bad games.

I think it's worth it for DuckTales 1+2 alone, though there's a remake of DuckTales 1 available that is probably more attractive to people that aren't fond of the NES.

This is a superbly done collection of six of the best, most polished titles on the Nintendo Entertainment System from a very strong period in Capcom's history. The games themselves are excellent and withstand the test of time with their gameplay quality, flow & feel, and overall presentation. On top of that, this set adds a worthwhile Time Attack and Boss Rush system that brings plenty of extra replayability to the table. The game records your playthrough and uploads it to the leaderboards, so they're clean and being able to watch other peoples' replays is fantastic & a great way to improve.

In addition to the games themselves, this includes full soundtracks for all six games in addition to a well curated Gallery that includes comic book ads, box scans for every version (including handheld and Japanese release), extremely rare promotional material, and previously unreleased artwork . I'm a huge fan of how they did this gallery, presenting it with a minimalist approach as a sort of semi-curated museum with interesting but brief factoids.

As for the games, they're all masterfully polished gameplay experiences that harness the spirit of their respective source material from start to finish. There's really nothing negative I can say about them. That said, the difficulty varies greatly for each title, with Darkwing Duck being the hardest and Rescue Rangers 2 being the easiest by far.

This is well worth it at full price or on sale, even if you're lucky enough to already own DuckTales Remastered. My only real complaint is that it doesn't include the handheld versions of the games despite teasing them in the Gallery.

+ Good for nostalgia.
+ Good for extracting legit ROMs.
- Bad for retroachievements - the roms unsupported (ask to add those plz!).
- Collision detection is off at least in in DuckTales 1 and Darkwing Duck.

Wish we could buy NES ROMs like we do with SEGA's.
Also, @SEGA, add MORE games ;/

This collection is such an important part of NES culture. On their own, they are good games. Ducktales and Chip and Dale in particular are still great games and hold up. Ducktales 2 & C&D2 came out pretty late in the NES life, so having them here is a treat even if I still haven't played much of either. Talespin is.... well... It's something. BUT! This collection is ace and, if you're interested in old NES games, worth the pick up.

How to spend your money on game ROMs like a pro.
If you see this on sale I advise to buy it, since it's a fun to compete in the online leaderboards
The Gallery is nice, but I was a bit disappointed the lack of information about the people who made these games, and the far too few achivements for it.
Overall, a decent package.

Back then when you around 7 years old and stay home rather than go outside with friends play some Flip caps, you chose to
play game. You realize that you doomed to waste few days maybe even weeks for learning game levels and enemies just to have chance of beating it. With options that you have now ( time rewind and saves ) you can finish game in 15-30 mins. Still awesome to hear those theme songs and remember the times! Thanks Capcom for bringing back memories :)

The game is fun to play on personal time, but there's more cons then pros. Let me show them..

=====
PROS
=====
1. Retro vibes
2. Classic animation

=====
CONS
=====
1. Windowed mode doesn't let the player choose a specific size for resolution
2. Music can't be adjusted especially when streaming
3. Keyboard / mouse players, this game isn't friendly for those controls
4. Can't customize controls

Just not suitable for streaming in my opinion.

You don't need a controller to play these games. Those reviews are lying.
It's literally just using your arrow keys along with F and D.

That's it.
For all of them.
Incredibly playable.

Decades later and these titles are still challenging.
Nice throwback platformer bundle.

No native controller support. I have two Logitech F310 but the game only accepts one of them. If I want to play coop one of us HAS to use the keyboard. Utterly ridiculous.

Also, while playin Duck Tales 1 I encountered several glitches in less than 10 minutes.

How to sell an old video game rom in modern days? Well, The Disney Afternoon Collection is the right way to go.

It's a package of 6 games:

1) DuckTales 1,
(a simple, easy and fun platformer about collecting money aka score)

2) DuckTales 2,
(basically Duck Tales but with more features, better level design, better boss fights and shop system. I don't understand why everybody is praising Duck Tales 1 when Duck Tales 2 is superior game in every single aspect of it)

3) Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 1,
(a platformer with simple puzzles, optional co-op and lots of boxes)

4) Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2,
(similiar with Duck Tales 2, Rescue Rangers 2 it is a straight upgrade in every single way)

5) Darkwing Duck,
(a REALLY good platformer overall with only one horrible designed thing - a final boss fight)

6) TaleSpin,
(weird but interesting 2D shoot 'em up game where you can change direction of flying in a very goofy way. Out of all of them - Telespin is the most brutal in term of difficulty, mostly due how unfairly slow your character is moving when comparing to everything else on the screen and very limited checkpoints system)

Beside those 6 games there is also couple of extra features:

1) Boss Rush for each game
(its a extra few minutes of fun),

2) Time Attack
(not really a fan of that but cool it exist I guess),

3) Leaderboards
(its filled with cheaters so nobody cares),

4) Filters
(they will make your game look even more ugly so nobody cares),

5) Rewind,
(option to make bullcrap NES games a bit less bullcrap )

6)Load/Save,
(only one slot tho, weirdly saving and loading takes like 15 times longer than on any average good NES emulator)

7) Music Player,
(to listen entire soundtrack of each song)

8) Museum
(gallery of few images, concept art, box covers and a bit of fun facts about production of those games)

Great package of 6 great games for a great price. Nuff said!

I didnt think I wouldve played this as much as I have. When I was a kid the only game i played was Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, and I rented it only twice. Never played the other games besides DuckTales on an emulator about 5 years ago.

My favorite is TaleSpin. I didnt think I would enjoy it that much but I found myself liking it a lot. Both Chip & Dale games are fun, although I liked the 2nd better because the hitboxes on the first game are friggin huge. My least favorite is Darkwing Duck, as theres enemies everywhere and Darkwing will stick to any ledge automatically when sometimes I didnt want him to.

I know it wasnt part of the Disney Afternoon back in the day, but it would have been cool if The Little Mermaid was included as well since its a Capcom/Disney game during the NES era. I enjoyed that game a lot back in the day. Overall its a solid collection of Capcom games from the NES days that mostly still hold up pretty well. The included museum with art, music and especially history is great, plus the ability to rewind mistakes during gameplay is a nice touch for new players.

Might be just the nostalgia speaking though, gameplay wise they are all sort of... old timey, as expected. I guess it's the reason why Capcom included rewind feature, just in case.

In the late 80's/early 90's, Disney made several shows that together each afternoon, usually reimagining some of their characters. Each of these shows had at least one NES game from it, and the Disney Afternoon Collection contains all six of those NES games.

Some of these games were instant classics, especially Duck Tales (which a few years ago had an excellent remake done, which has unfortunately been removed from Steam). Despite being based on cartoons, these games were known for their heavy difficulty.

I would easily compare this collection to the Mega Man Legacy collection, which is also Capcom NES games. Emulation is smooth, worked nicely with a controller, and has some neat extras to look at and listen to. This version adds saving games, and a rewind feature which lets you undo your gameplay if you make a mistake - which is great for practicing.

Shows/Games:

Duck Tales: Duck Tales reimagined Ebeneezer Scrooge from Mickey's Christmas Carol as Scrooge McDuck, a treasure hunter and the wealthiest duck in the world, who takes care of his three nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. They went on a number of Indiana Jones-style adventures, looking for treasures and relics, and solving mysteries, while having one of the best theme songs ever written.

The games actually do a good job of being faithful to the source, at a time when movie tie-in games were atrocities. Scrooge is searching the world (and the moon) for 5 of the rarest treasures, while dealing with his usual adversaries. The game mechanic is strange, to say the least - Scrooge uses his cane as a pogo stick, which lets him bounce on obstacles and hit enemies in the head, and mastering the pogo cane is the key to the game. The levels are both tough and well-designed, and there's some neat ideas in the game (for instance, accessing one area requires you to return to another level, and there are some creative uses of magic mirrors). The boss fights can be tough until you learn the patterns.

The game is hard at first, but once you learn it, it's very satisfying. I haven't played much of the sequel, though.

Chip 'N Dale's Rescue Rangers: The scourge of Pluto, the pair of troublesome chipmunks Chip and Dale are reimagined as a pair of detectives, known as the Rescue Rangers.

The game is a fairly typical side-scroller. Controls are well-tuned, compared to a lot of games of the era. The gameplay distinguishes itself by being based on picking up boxes and objects and throwing them, or hiding under them, and being built for 2-player co-op. The graphics were great, but the music ranged from well-done to annoying circus music - I think it might be the most audibly annoying game in the collection. My biggest problem is that the boss fights are really all the game thing - grab the red ball, and throw it at the boss, and then move out of the way. Also, like with Darkwing Duck, hit detection is a bit off - jumping over stuff can be a bad idea.

Tale Spin: The weirdest of the shows has Baloo the Bear from the Jungle Book working as a pilot, along with other Jungle Book characters. The game it a shoot-em-up autoscroller, which can be very frustrating to play. It really stands out in this collection as the only game that is not a platformer.

Darkwing Duck: This was a spin-off of Duck Tales centered around a Batman-type superhero. The game is somewhat in the style of Mega Man, but only to an extent. The controls are surprisingly not great, so far as Capcom's standards at the time, and the game's difficulty is strange - I still can't figure out ways to get through areas without taking damage.

Great collection of a bunch of classic Disney games from the 90s. Wish it had more behind the scene production material like the Mega Man Legenacy, but otherwise it a great set. Got it gifted here and bought it again on the PS4.

The Disney Afternoon Collection not only came as a welcome surprise to 90s kids, retro gamers, & speedrunners alike, but arrived just in time for the reboot of the hit series DuckTales (2017).

(Note: An abbreviated version is posted here, because the full set with dedicated reviews for every game, would go far beyond the constraints of Steam’s character limit. Links to the full reviews with references are therefore included.)

Disney, Capcom, & Nintendo

Since these old licensed games are based on old TV series, here’s a bit of context to understand where they are coming from.

The Disney Afternoon cartoon block, known as Disney Club in Latin America & Europe ran from 1990-97 & was a worldwide success. So, naturally video games based on it were developed. However, making games took a lot of planning & so Disney worked with one of the best partners at the time, Capcom.

Capcom made games like Ghosts 'n Goblins (1986) or Mega Man (1987) & was familiar with the NES hardware. Selling games on the NES was also important as the Japanese giant had an almost 80% market share by 1991. But there was a catch. Companies could only make up to five games for Nintendo per year & games could not be ported to other company’s platforms for about two years, which led to a lot of third party exclusives & creative control by Nintendo. Disney circumvented the constraints by having multiple companies make games for them on different consoles.

The collection doesn’t use an emulator, but the games run on C++ instead. This way, they have new features, like a rewind, a boss rush, & a time attack. Sadly, the rewind changes the gameplay so that players might miss out on some secrets. Further, the collection also comes with a soundtrack, original U.S. American & Japanese NES box art, trivia, & concept art. Lastly, all games run at around 30 fps, as NTSC TV sets used to have around 29.97 fps while PAL & SECAM used 25 fps, while the hub menu uses 60 fps.

Co-op

Local co-op only works when both players use a gamepad &, at time of writing, it seems impossible to have them share a keyboard or mix & match a controller/keyboard combo. Some users also noted that their gamepads don’t work with collection at all.

DuckTales

DuckTales is a sidescrolling platformer & the first licensed game developed by Capcom. It runs on the Mega Man engine & shared some of its team members, including producer Tokuro Fujiwara & designer Keiji Inafune.

For the most part, the game fits right in with the series, looks cartoony & the soundtrack, composed by Yoshihiro Sakaguchi is magical. The best bit is that all of the five stages can be played in any order & contain hidden areas & shortcuts that let players play it safe or take riskier routes. DuckTales holds up really well & even rewards daunting adventurers with three different endings.

Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers

The two cipmunks from classical Disney shorts solve crimes that humans often consider too small to care about. For this, they get help from two mice, the engineer Gadget & Monterey Jack, who is friends with the fly Zipper.

The design team, that included Masahiko Kurokawa did a great job & sticks close to the source material. Disney game producer Darlene Lacey even recalls that “Rescue Rangers was one of the easiest Capcom projects that she ever had, with little to no changes being required to meet Disney’s quality assurance.” The game’s a lot of fun & even better with a friend.

TaleSpin

Full version: https://gaolioccasionallyreviews.wordpress.com/2017/05/21/talespin-pc-review/
TaleSpin (1991) is a shoot ‘em up based on the reimagining of The Jungle Book (1967). Rebecca Cunningham runs a delivery service for which Baloo is the airplane captain, the bear cub Kit Cloudkicker is the navigator, & the lion Wildcat is the mechanic.

Overall TaleSpin feels rushed & disconnected from the show, especially when Baloo fights a giant baseball or a giant invisible man. The game isn’t bad but suffers from odd design choices. The airplane moves very slowly & can only shoot one bullet at a time. Of course it is possible to buy upgrades, but to get those, players need to find as many of the treasures as possible, which is difficult for new players.

Darkwing Duck

Full version: https://gaolioccasionallyreviews.wordpress.com/2017/05/21/darkwing-duck-pc-review/
Darkwing Duck is a semi-competent caped crusader in the city of St. Canard. Unlike most super heroes, he wants to get rich, famous, & recognized for his actions, which stands in stark contrast to his attempts to be a good role model to his daughter Gosalyn. The series became very popular in Europe & the composer Yasuaki Fujita even recalls that “[Darkwing Duck] was mainly produced for the European market”.

Even though it’s fun, Darkwing Duck is not meant for beginners, with its strong enemies, tricky controls, & tough levels. The game is built on the Mega Man V engine, but Darkwing has less health than Mega Man while the enemies are stronger than in that game. The platforming is also tricky as the hanging mechanic isn’t polished. More development time would’ve worked wonders.

DuckTales 2

Scrooge once again travels the globe in search for treasure & fights his fiercest opponent yet: When the protagonist or his opponents get hit, they don’t blink like they should, but completely disappear for a while (like in a 30fps video of a 60 fps game).

Design-wise, Scrooge hasn’t changed, but the enemies & stages are more colorful. Sadly, the developers made some awkward decisions, like Gyro & Launchpad calling him Uncle Scrooge, or Scrooge not caring about money; he’s supposed to be a penny-pincher. Another negative is that the backtracking feels like unnecessary padding & that the RNG against Golem Duck is bad. DuckTales 2 has some great ideas, but could have done with more love.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2

This game might be the best game here, but was left in relative obscurity for over 20 years since NES support was dropped shortly after release. The adventure starts with a bomb in a nearby restaurant, which turns out to be a distraction so that Fat Cat could get the urn of an ancient pharaoh with lots of evil spirits inside.

Design-wise the other titles in this collection pale in comparison to Rescue Rangers 2. The haunted mansion stage is especially noteworthy with its incredible color cycling. The mechanics are also upgraded as the chipmunks can now perform charged throws now & hurl crates diagonally. Local co-op also has some unforeseen hurdles like occasional slowdowns.
