Über das Spiel

A singleplayer survival adventure set on a mysterious alien planet and is the spiritual successor to the 2010 PC Gamer USA Action/Adventure Game Of The Year "The Ball" set for release in Q1 2016.

Earth is on the brink of destruction and you are sent to explore a distant planet. After years of space travel you arrive but experience a catastrophic landing.

With your team members dead and your equipment destroyed you have no way of communicating with - or receiving help from an Earth that might no longer exist... you are completely and utterly alone...

Features:
  • Explore - Unlock the depths of the uncharted planet, and discover the secrets buried deep below. Delve into huge cave systems and tombs and uncover over 200 secrets.
  • Handcrafted - 10 large entirely handcrafted levels to explore. Explore and puzzle your way through 5 islands and 5 large tombs/caves.
  • Atmosphere - Atmosphere rich environment that is fully dynamic. An alien day and night cycle and a dynamic weather system that calculates temperature/humidity/wind. Ocean tides. Plants respond to the climate. Storms form. Earthquakes happen.
  • Survive - Survive the extreme climate, tornadoes, storms, meteors, lightning, and not least the dark secrets buried beneath the surface.

Gameplay:
  • Linear - The game has a start and end. It is a singleplayer adventure with 10 large levels.
  • Your Time- Scale the game as you wish. Go from a super hardcore experience to a relaxing stroll on an alien planet. In fact you can cheat old school console style even. It is your time, your experience.
  • Just You - Very little hand holding. No obvious enemies. No combat. It is just you. All alone by yourself.
  • Old school - Fond memories of games from 10, 20 years ago? So do we. Complex level layouts. Dozens of secret areas. Keys to unlock doors. Underground environments. A ~ key to open the game console.
  • Exploration - There are hundreds and hundreds of things to find hidden away in the world. Secret areas the size of modern "next gen levels". Secrets within secrets. Just how deep does the rabbit hole go?
  • Puzzles - Puzzle your way through environmental puzzles left by an alien civilization, like our titles Unmechanical and The Ball.

Bescheuertes Spiel!!

Danke :-)

Fantastic job that every exploration loving players should try.
This game feels like the hidden gem you wonder why nobody is talking about.

If you are into exploring an unknown world, discovering its past and secrets and don't want to be bothered by meaningless fighting sequences, Solus Project is the game you need.

If the survival aspect is not to your liking, you can play in Easy mode and it won't be a problem.
This way, you can focus on exploring instead of managing resources.
Thank you, devs, for this easy mode!
I've seen too many games that had insane survival mechanics and they just felt a chore to play. Not of that in Solus!

Maaaaaaan, this was one of the best indie games I've ever played. Starts off innocently enough, and I don't want to spoil it, but it gets creepy AF in places without getting too far into cheesy horror tropes.

No mobs made the fear of the dark and unknown almost non existent. Once I discovered there were no mobs it just ruined the game for me. The only thing you have to be afraid of chasing you is a black smoke cloud. not very frightening.

The environments are stunning, the mystery of the story keeps you going, but the lack of mobs or anything to kill made this basically a walking sim.

It has been 3 years since I bought the game and finished it once, my love for this game beginning from then on. It is unique and meets all my needs for a good, convincing alien story. Even the graphics are somewhat unique to me, iconic for The Solus Project.
I have played this game again, 3 years later, and it still made me feel as though I am playing it for the first time. Amazing game, it will always have a special place in my heart. My hopes for an eventual sequel are as alive as ever, but I'd be fine if it never came down to it. I am satisfied I discovered this game and thankful for the pleasant time it has provided me.

I started playing this game in VR recently and I have found it to be quite enjoyable. I would from time to time load it in desktop mode only to find that it works so much better in VR. The immersion it gives just can't be beat. There are some annoyances. For example the only objective point your given is just labeled forward objective and unless your at reading environmental story telling you can miss out on many areas of the game. There are areas of the map that can be skipped as avoiding them doesn't prevent you from advancing.

Aside from that annoyance I quite enjoy this game. The mix of survival and mild horror elements makes a nice blend for this type of game. I recommend it for anyone who has a VR head set and likes some environmental story telling.

I really wanted to like this game but I could not force myself to complete the game. Environments and weather looks amazing sometimes, but there is just too much walking in the caves which are all looking the same all the time. Puzzles are nothing special and story just did not grab me so I stopped playing and did not turn it on for quite a while. I have played a VR version.

I got roped in by the theme. I really like exploration and survival games. Subnautica comes to mind when I look at this one. There are some cool environments and some discovery but there is too much walking around between the interesting moments. Part of me wants to keep going to discover more, but that's half completionism. I want to go forward just because I'm there. But since I know time is not limitless, I might go play something else.

What a fantastic game! For some reason I expected something completely different based on some of the negative reviews, but my experience couldn't have been more positive! This is definitely up there as one of my favorites along with subnautica, Soma, and the long dark. The terrain, vastness of the islands, storyline are all incredible and actually interesting, there is so much to explore and discover! Huge shout out to the sound/music designers, the music and effects are amazing, it really adds to the tense atmosphere and immersion of being on an alien planet with impending danger at any moment. My heart was beating so hard at a few spots I actually had to take breaks to calm down. I love the concept of drastic weather patterns and trying to survive them. My only disappointment after 57 hours of immersion in this cool storyline is there is no Solus 2. Ending was great but it only left me wishing for more, I'm sad to have completed the game now, but will revisit it no doubt. I'd love to play again in VR if I ever have the opportunity, I can only imagine how breathtaking it would be.

Says Index supported but shows Vive controllers in game which is confusing. Too much text where audio narration could be for introduction and interactive controls explanation. Standing in VR reading pages of text just to get started is tedious. Spent half an hour trapped in the beginning section unable to climb or jump over obstacles that should be easily possible to. Tried various things with the only object available but can't make a sharp rock... May be more intuitive in 2D, otherwise will have to waste time researching walkthroughs just to get started. Appears to be no physics in VR. E.g. can't smash or even bump rock against another object, it just passes through like air. Index controller grip feature is not supported. I accidentally worked out how to rid my hand of the rock I picked up and couldn't release the usual way. Will try again some time but so far not very enjoyable.

TL;DR: Great atmosphere, dull game, boring story.

I really wanted to like this game. I’m a sucker for space/sci-fi stories. The beginning was intriguing, but a few hours in I wanted it to be over. This game tries to be a lot of things, but isn’t: “crafting/survival” (bad system), “exploration” (very linear), “puzzles” (super basic), creepy mystery/sci-fi space story (starts off really good becomes terrible later). I do not expect to ever touch this game again.

Some good aspects:
The atmosphere is 10/10. Eerie and mysterious. Great representation of being stranded on an alien planet. You feel confused, alone, and apprehensive. The sounds/music is top notch, really enhances the atmosphere. The visuals (environment and structures) are pretty good, not supper detailed in some things, but it really enhanced the “alien looking” atmosphere. The environmental effects are cool (weather, tides, etc.). You can adjust the survival elements (temperature, hunger, hydration) to be easy, hard, or non-existent (good flexible feature).

The bad and the ugly:
After an hour or so the “survival” was annoying, so I turned it off to focus on the exploration/story. Ha, what a joke. It was mostly walk from A to B, get a key, go back, read this wall of boring text, step on this thing, …. So disappointing. I had to force myself to keep playing (even used console commands a few times otherwise I would have quit because of how tedious it was) and I was only mildly interested to see it till the end. The story was lackluster, did not engage me much. I did not care to go around looking for secrets at all. I normally read every text I can find in a game, but here I was like skip skip skip. The lack of being able to save anywhere without sleeping becomes tedious (again used console to save whenever). Half the time you have no idea where you are going or why, except the game telling you to do it. The controls are quite frustrating at times. You can’t drop things from inventory without holding them first. Combining things is 0% intuitive and awful. Inventory size is tiny. Walking and swimming are so slow. NO map! I get no map outside if there’s clear visual references, but in the caves it would have really helped.

Conclusion:
Given how good the atmosphere was and how poor everything else, I think this game should have been a straight up survival game. With a crafting/survival overhaul, and removing most of the story elements except an overall objective (like contacting home, or getting out of planet), then it would have been much more enjoyable.

At first I thought it was going to be an actual sci fi survival sandbox. Then I thought it is actually like some lovecraftian adventure time.

About 4 hours in I'm not really sure what the game is trying to identify itself as and it is really beginning to feel too long and or bad pacing. Perhaps this is just a walking simulator with story elements teasing you with what it could have been.

If I could make this title better; being more focused towards something it is trying to be and just expose the options like controller vibration on/or off.

This review is based on a full playthrough in VR with an Oculus Quest and Virtual Desktop.

TLDR at bottom.

I cannot believe how long I hesitated to buy and play The Solus Project. Once I bought it on sale for under 10 Euros but did not played it for a while because I expected a poor VR implementation like by so many other games which were not developed with VR in first place. Some days ago, I decided to start with it, and I could not stop playing it until I finally completed the game in about 20 hours in just a couple of days. Alone this shows how much I enjoyed playing it! The Solus Project makes it easily in my top 10 VR games even though it is not a game which was developed for VR in first place.

This game is now four years old and in terms of polygons and texture it may not be the most beautiful but if you look at it as a whole picture it can still be (very) impressing (good example of “more than the sum of its parts”). Especially the weather effects in VR are breathtaking.

Gameplaywise it can be a very personal thing. Different to many other games of this genre drinking and eating is not so prominent and can be adjusted or even turned completely off in the settings. Also, there is no building houses or so in this game. Instead this game is all about exploration (not only the environment but also the story). But here comes a little warning for everyone who is very scary: Exploring some parts of this planet can be a bit scary. So, if you cannot handle such things (in VR or at all) this game is maybe not for you.

This leads me to the story. Here I do not want to spoil anything but let me just say that it is (very) interesting and one of the reasons I could not stop playing this game. The story is told by notes, pictures and ancient stone tablets and has a strong mystery note. If you do not like this kind of storytelling you will most likely not enjoy this game.

Since this game was not developed with VR in first place it cannot hold up to good VR only titles in terms of VR integration (especially not with VR titles like Half-Life: Alyx). But let me say that this is one of the good examples of VR integration for a flat game and works surprisingly well. Even little details like putting your tools back in the backpack by just move your arm to your back works perfectly. I am sure the developers took their time to not just do the minimum and I am very thankful for that!

Opposite to another review I read I had no issues playing this game with my Oculus Quest and Virtual Desktop. Everything was perfectly smooth and no stuttering. I played it on an Intel i7-6700k and a GTX 1070.

Conclusion / TLDR: The Solus Project is all about explore a mysterious planet. If you like this setting and exploration at all I can highly recommend you this game especially if you own an VR Headset!

It's meh. Even though I enjoyed the game and may pick it up again at some point, it has serious issues, one of which is simply not being honest at all in the game description.

First off: this is not a survival game. At most it's an exploration slash horribly executed puzzle game with a starvation/dehydration mechanic tossed in. This pretty much means: have a quick bite to eat whenever you come across one of the many bottomless bowls of soup dotted around the islands.

The game description furthermore hints that among your travels you'll come across the odd alien structure. I envisioned this some kind of background set against the harsh climate of the planet you're stranded on. Instead, the game entirely focuses on this: it's a major driver behind the plot and entirely in your face. The complete opposite of being in the background. I do enjoy the occasional horror game so I had no issues when the game took an eerie turn but please make this clear from the description.

As for the actual gameplay: half of the time you have no clue where you're going as the game forces you down a linear path while still hinting at exploration. It's confusing if you don't have the tools needed to get to a particular optional zone, as there's no indication whether you'll revisit these places or if you should have had the tools in your inventory by that point.

Speaking of which, inventory size is frustratingly limited. Certain resources are abundant in one part, so you discard of some, only to run out later in the game.

The crafting system is horrendous. Somehow you have to drop item A on the ground in order to craft it into item C using item B which remains in your inventory. I also can't seem to pick up a rock without cutting into a tool first.

Dynamic weather is nowhere to be found. I've spent most of my time walking through the rain during the day, and in the freezing cold at night. The non-stop voice telling me that I'm 'cold and wet' has been the subject of one of my dreams in the last few days.

The plot is entirely cliched, and making some meta-reference to the genre towards the end doesn't suddenly make it good. It's piss poor. If it were in the background, as it was in the first few 'maps', it could've worked. If you are going to make the stupid decision to force some story about alien space travelers, at least make it so that it isn't full of plot holes. Hitchcock's thrillers were successful because we didn't have full information. Explaining everything going on in the game breaks down the experience.

Anyway, I did enjoy the game for what it was, considering what I paid for it. Could be a thumbs up for all I care, but since the description doesn't match the product I'm voting no here.

PROS: I did not encounter any bugs or glitches. The story was fascinating and kept me interested. The graphics are very good and detailed. I loved the exploring aspect. Once on the island, you can go in any direction and explore to your hearts content, even underwater. The exploration is the best part of the game in my opinion. There was just enough creepy content to keep me on edge a little, but not too much. The survival part was just right, not too difficult and not too easy. Well balanced and fun to play. Took me almost 30 hours to complete and there is lots of replayability here. I will certainly play it again as I only got half of the achievements and found just a fraction of the secrets.

CONS: Not many cons. I do wish the game had a little bit of character creation (designing your space suit maybe) and a third person view. Some sort of map would be helpful but It's not really necessary with the forward vector I guess.

OVERALL: I enjoyed the game tremendously and I feel that I got my moneys worth. I will certainly be playing it again.

I dearly wanted to like this game when I started; Cyan games and more recently Subnautica are some of the most satisfying storytelling experiences I've had.

Unfortunately, The Solus Project failed to deliver, despite some strong concepts.
* The survival components are insufficiently deep.
* The storytelling wavers in tone, and ultimately fails to deliver on the mysteries that are set up in a satisfactory way.
* The core of the gameplay is wandering around various caves, temples, and beaches looking for hidden objects. What few puzzles there are just feel like roadblocks for the sake of having a gameplay mechanic other than wandering around.

If you enjoy long walking simulators, this is not a bad one! It shows a lot of care, and some serious promise! But it could have been more.

Bit cliche, but this game is amazing. The devs managed to make a credible alien planet with UE4 and an honestly creepy story. Most horror games rely more on jumpscares rather than atmosphere, but this isn't an approach that really sticks with the player - the dread of the unnerving atmosphere is what really sticks in my mind. Plus, the environments are truly beautiful

A truly interesting game with genuine mystery. There are times you stand in awe and times you scramble in fear. My tolerance to horror games has reversed over the years (as in, I am more scared now than then) and this provided me with the perfect amount of tension w/o scaring me to Alt+Tab (it's not quite as tense as say Penumbra or Amnesia). I love the story telling elements and pacing. The narrative is driven through the use of hieroglyphs and personal thinking through environmental inferences, so don't expect AAA dialogue. Definitely recommend you play through it.
