Features

Alles in allem kann ich The Vanishing of Ethan Carter definitiv weiterempfehlen.

Beautiful, very artistic game. The stories Ethan wrote made me so sad.

Gameplay mechanics are fairly basic. Graphics are fantastic and the melancholic music is lovely. I had to get the piano sheets after I finished it.

Like an additional layer many things about its esoteric background are not explained in the game but can be found out about in real life doing some research.

I loved it very much and hope the Astronauts will be able to make another masterpiece like this.

I replayed it in the VR version which looks great and works really well.

Wow!

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

Gameplay:

Grafik:

Was muss ich jetzt machen?
Wie funktioniert dieses Rätsel?

Story:
Im gesammten eine zufriedenstellende Mysterie Geschichte. Kein Meisterwerk, aber doch gelungen.

Technik:

Note 9.5 von 10

Short yet moody, this game was quite popular back when it first released.
Many years have passed since and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter still holds up when compared to many newcomers of the genre (like firewatch).

Great game for those who want a full experience in one evening. I loved it.

Before I proceed to give my opinion on this game, please note that if you happen to have any tendency of getting dizzy consider shifting the camera angles in the game and the speeds. It can get slightly nauseating at times. Now onto the review: This is such a great game. The visuals of the game are stunning. It's almost life-like. The story itself is incredible. I didn't expect the ending. It's well voiced as well. I give this a 9/10 out of games. It's up there with my other fave games.

Beautifully written story with beautiful environments ranging from natural to fantastical! It's a walking simulator, but one that does award you for looking behind every tree. The story is also mysterious all the way to the every end, and the pay-off was well done.

For a short game of 2-3 hours, this kept me invested and the little details in the environments that I kept spotting throughout were a welcome experience that even triple-A games do not always bring. If you want a good mystery story and/or a gorgeous walking-simulator, this is for you.

I really enjoyed this game. The scenery was wonderful and the music was spot on. It left me with a melancholy haunted sort of feeling. The storyline drew me in and made me want to keep going, to find out what happened to Ethan, The only downside was how short the play-time is, and that once you play it through it's not really the sort of game to play again. There is essentially no guidance for the game and you do spend a lot of time wandering around because of that, which may be a pro or con depending on what type of games you enjoy.

So, I bought this game since I like narrative games with atmospherical landscapes and a little creepy vibe to them. But on the other side, I did not know that The Vanishing of Ethan Carter will turn from 'creepy' to 'horror' near the end of the game. In my defense, there was no 'horror' tag.
I absolutely am a scaredy-cat and cannot take the sheer terror of hiding from a fictional computer game monster or something (I don't know, I panically quit the game as soon as I realized that I wasn't alone).
Nonetheless, I really like this game. The character-narrator's voice is deep and calming and perfectly fits the atmosphere of the game. The story is intriguing and the investigative manner in which to unfold it is well made.

(Disclaimer: I played the Redux version and finished the game in 10 hours, with walkthrough)

I am a big fan of graphic adventure and walking simulator, I have played dozens of similar titles and never once been disappointed, but this time I felt frustrated since the beginning.

I understand that the game doesn't want to take you by the hand, but there should be a limit for a walking simulator in an almost open world without any hint about what to do next.

I have spent more than one hour just before the dam's bridge, wandering around searching for things to do, getting lost and finding my way again, only to find out later on, while I was almost 3/5 through, that there were still things left behind I had missed despite the longest minutes spent in the woods. Some of the items to be found were so hidden and lost that it took me a long time to find them even when following the walkthrough, bringing even more frustration.

The scenes we have to assign a chronologic order to are riddles to be solved just by trial and error, which adds more frustration.
This was one of the few games that made me wish for it to end as soon as possible because I had enough since the very start.

Yet it is beautifully made and it's a pleasure for the sight (except from the motion sickness that I got after a few minutes and I could fix following Steam guides), I can absolutely tell that the devs and team were really caring about this game and its production, but the story doesn't really make much sense to me, I still cannot figure out some parts that felt just disconnected.

I keep having the feeling I might have finished the game without even seeing some parts of it, if it wasn't for the walkthrough. More than once I realized I moved on without any problem only to find out later that some scenes or items were still left behind.

Frustration is the feeling that accompanied me all along the whole playthrough.

Been awhile since I played this walking sim - really struck a chord w/ me, being mostly outside while I'm going quarantine-crazy.

Pros:
* Beautiful world.
* Music is beautiful, and well-tuned to each setting.
* Lots of mini-stories to open up and explore.
* Plotline is suitably confusing until near the end.

Cons:
* Makes a point of telling you it won't explain how the game works.

Meh:
* Puzzles aren't tough, once you know the mechanics.

TLDR: If you like a good plotline and world design, w/ mild puzzles, 9/10; else, avoid.

This game was alright. The story and mystery was fairly interesting, but open world games aren't really my jam and it was pretty open. By the time I got to the last puzzle, there were other's I had missed along the way so I wasn't actually done with the game and it wouldn't show me the conclusion which was really annoying. I had to follow a walk through for like half of this game because I kept getting lost or the puzzles were almost impossible to figure out. Still a good game though and I do recommend it.

Not recommended if you're going for the story, but if you think you'd be OK just enjoying walking around and viewing the scenery, maybe yes, you can get this on sale.

The graphics are absolutely gorgeous. Man this game was released back in 2014 and even at this day it still looks pretty up to date. Maybe not as good as some AAA titles but only a couple steps behind. You can't really complain anything about it.

However story wise this is almost abysmal. I don't even get it, what does all this mean? You poke around and solve a few murder cases, but at the end none of them matters. Things go from some conflicts between characters, to something ancient and... Lovecraftian. and at last, you get that kind of, oh it's all just a dream ending. WTF is this?

And it's extremely short. If you put all dialogs together, maybe that's less than 100 lines, that short. And of course there are also notes, maybe about a dozen of them.

The gameplay, well design a game that doesn't hold the player's hand and let them roam freely is fine. But first you need some contents to explore, what we have here is obviously not enough. Then it's better to have some quality of life features: like give you a map, or showing which objects can be interacted from some distance. We don't have those here. Without a walkthrough you are probably going to search every inch of land just to find the puzzles. And although there is a map, that is given to you after you've solved most of the cases, not really useful. The murder cases themselves are not that hard to find though, you just need a lot of walk.

Could otherwise be a really great game, a wasted opportunity.

One last note: If you're going to play this, the Redux version is recommended, slightly better graphics and performance, much smaller install size, and most importantly: more save points. You can go back to the original version for the extra Trading Cards and Achievements later.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is one of those games I like to think about and remember back to every now and then. There is so much sentimentality and feeling tied to this game for me. Red Creek Valley is a place I would like to live in or visit once in a while in real life. It's so magical, peaceful, quiet, lonely, normal and yet mysterious. I find myself wandering around Red Creek Valley without a goal, just absorbing the beauty and tranquility of the place. Everytime I enter Red Creek Valley, I don't want to leave. At this point this game is like an old silent friend to me who doesn't need words to make me feel and experience beautiful things. The soundtrack is amazing (made by the same guy who made the witcher 3 soundtracks apparently). The voice acting is also pretty good especially the voice actor of Paul Prospero. Story is intriguing and mysterious. Gameplay would probably be the only lacking thing in this game. The majority of the puzzles to progress the story aren't compelling, fun and complex enough. I don't mind as I absolutely adore this game, but If were to pinpoint a flaw, this would be it. For me, this game is a part of the holy trinity of great beautiful indie story driven games. What Remains of Edith Finch, Firewatch, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
I genuinely love this game with my whole heart

5/5

I am a Senior citizen and only began playing video games about 6 months ago. Frankly, I don't care if I ever 'beat' this game-it is just so WONDERFUL to be able to explore this gigantic, gorgeous, realistic World! I spent my first few hours in Tourist mode and still have not visited the whole area. I love how if you are ever-so-curious to hike up to the Cemetery or poke around the Carter house before you begin your Investigation, you are free to do so. If you wish to take this laid-back approach, I highly recommend printing or downloading map of Red Creek Valley. I also like how there are no endless series of locked doors and no 'laundry list' of things to find (wrench, crowbar, board, etc...) or silly, pointless tasks to complete to interrupt the game play. If you need help, there are a number of walk-throughs on You tube and fantastic Guides available right here on Steam (my favorite is Mike's). So darned NICE to be an hour into a Game and not feel like I want to drop-kick my PC out the nearest window in frustration! Thank you, Astronauts!

This game is peak October mood.

There are beautiful, autumnal vistas in every direction, an almost oppressive air of malaise and melancholy, and plenty of creepy spookiness. Plus, the puzzles are actually pretty creative and satisfying to solve; but play it this month for maximum effect!

a nice detective story with supernatural elements, sometimes it's quite tough to understand what to do but hey! you're a top notch detective aren't you? I just wish both versions gave cards because I've played the redux only..

Pros:
- The graphics are awesome, especially the lightning
- the english synchronisation is really great
- the music is wonderful too and fits the story
- the puzzles are kinda cute and not really difficult, but it's nice how you need to solve them
- the lovecraft trophy
- the end

cons:
- a bit too short
- the areals are too big and there is not enough stuff to find (like more papers or stuff like that)

Game is bugged in spots making it impossible to get all the achievements with one run through. Game mechanics are interesting but don't pair well with a lackluster story.

Its a hard game to review in my opinion.
It had some good aspect, for example, the graphics are just beautiful, I
could just sit in the game and look at the view and not play the storyline,
its that kind of the beauty of graphics.
The storyline didn't interest me in any part, for me, it just didn't make
much sense.
The jump scare was just not scary and it felt like it was just put there
for the sake of it.
I didn't enjoy the game if it wasn't for my friends which recommended
me this game I would not buy this.

The only one time I would personally recommend this game to someone is when
they are trying to get a game which is easy to get full achievements, it took
me 4 hours to get all 14 achievements.
However, if the game isn't on sale don't get it, it's not worth £14.99

This is more than just a beautiful walking simulator set in a decaying rural town. It's a punch to the gut
on top of being a catharsis to everyone who has ever experienced being put down for wanting something more in life. As more of Ethan's story is put together, you really feel the weight of family and society wearing this kid down before he's even become a teenager, trying to force him into being an empty husk of a human being like his brother, uncle, and mother.
Thanks, Astronauts, for one hell of a story.

If Myst is your speed, then I think that you will like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Sometimes, what needs to be done is not readily apparent. However, you don't have anything forcing you to make decisions or solve puzzles in a timely manner (with the exception of one area). The graphics are mostly good, with a few things that are a bit jarring. Occasionally, you might jump the rails. Saving can be a bit of an issue. Still, it tells an interesting story in a way that I found pleasing.

Well... the story isn't bad. But I honestly can't recommend this game. It's quite an atmospheric walking simulator, which is okay for me. But anything beyond what directly related to the story seems to be void of life, which make the game kind of boring and lifeless...

To avoid a TL/DR post I second what @ColoradoMtn1222 wrote in their review and therefore I honestly can't really recommend the game. Imo this one is for indirect consumption via youtube. Not that it's a waste of anyone's time, no. Music, sound, visuals - all looks fantastic, of course. At the same time i couldn't really invest myself to the story simply because it was lacking. If the devs wanted the game to be a hybrid of walking simulator+point-and-click+horror the game is just too short. Imo the game could've benefited from having a few more puzzles to flesh the story out better, maybe have not just one ending. I also didn't like how the events unfolded towards the very end (no spoliers).

Pros:
It's a fairly good looking game...
for some the story may be interesting, seeing all the flashbacks etc.

Cons:
It felt short and very bland.. Like you had seen everything after not very long. Honestly just felt like a Taking A Walk In The Park Simulator (TM). (with a few occasional murderous flashbacks lol)

For this reason alone I do not personally recommend it.

Just walking around and finding flashback points to see a story that has already unfolded in your universe.. On paper it sounds okay I guess, but there just isn't enough to do imo.. you just walk around and look at a movie play out in front of you from the sideline basically. But a movie would be more worth your time XD

Wonderful interactive movie game with fabulous views and interesting puzzles. The story is great and delivered through antagonist's narration and crime scenes where detective puts evidence together and forms picture of what happened.

In this game there is no fighting, no shooting. Just one location and puzzles solving which bring you closer in unfolding the mystery of Ethen Carter's disappearing.

NOTE: I completed this game, but in the redux version.

I hate giving this game a thumb's down, because there was so much good in it, all of which have been mentioned in many reviews. I simply can't recommend it, though. Yes, it's visually striking. Yes, it has beautiful music. And so much of the monologue from the MC is so beautifully written. I can't have anything but respect and admiration for every person who took part in this project.

The idea that leaving things open-ended and allowing for players to interpret endings and such is not an idea I have trouble enjoying overall. I have loved many stories like that, and it doesn't irk me. What irks me here is that what WAS there was not engaging in the first place. Could I invent a bunch of really cool potential meanings and actual events in my head that could turn it into something amazing? Sure, I could. But that's not why I played that game. I write fiction when I want to make up fun stuff from scratch. It's easier to make it up from scratch than to use a flat springboard.

The gameplay was not engaging for me. It had puzzles. We had to wander around and find things. Lots of games have that. But I didn't feel like I was on an emotional ride, or using my brain. It was just a pretty world I was wandering around in, doing things that made no sense, and stringing together a story that made no sense. Emotionally-driven stories can achieve great results with loose logic tying together events, but this didn't have that emotional thread, either. Everyone and everything was 2D. Plot twists in a 2D world are just so much less fun.

So many people enjoy this game. I write this review not because I think my opinion is more important than theirs. Chances are, most of the people reading this will agree with the majority of reviewers. And that's great. I hope you have so much fun with this game if you choose to play it! But this review is for the others out there who don't enjoy this sort of game. Not everyone does. Not everyone enjoys the games I love, either. It's just how it works. It's best for us to spend money on games that WE enjoy. If you think my gripes sound problematic, hold off on purchasing this game. If you think I sound ridiculous, purchase it and don't look back! Happy gaming, everyone!

This game has many different ideas and feelings wrapped into itself. It has been a long time since I've played a game I couldn't see the ending of, and that I did not want to see the ending of. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a game full of emotions, new ideas and (sometimes) confusing perspectives, which all in all makes it an extremely wonderful game.

If you enjoy games such as What Remains of Edith Finch and Marie's Room, this game is for you. The developers really created something beautiful here, and I am so grateful they did.

When you like solving puzels this game is for you. Good game and once you grasp the connection to the floating letters and numbers it grabs you and surprises you... Very unique game here devs.
So creative and to find a nitch for a murder mystery game that I have never seen before makes it stand out from other murder mysteries. Well worth it.
Good story :) Graphics are a bonus.
Do you have any more games like this please. Can't wait.

I played the Redux version for 4hrs. The Redux version has more dramatic lighting and runs very smooth. The original version stutters on my GTX1070, for some reason. Whether this is a good game depends on what's your expectation. As a walking simulator this one is great, with its scenery absolutely spectacular. It is a treat simply walking in this game. But its story, puzzles, and core gameplay mechanics are all boring. The amount of content is extremely limited. It took me hours to finish the game because it took long to figure out how to play it. Once you know it, another playthrough probably won't take 30 minutes. Not everyone would agree with me, but for me I don't regret purchasing this game, except that if things can go all over again, I would completely skip the story and puzzle solving, only walk.

Glorified fetch quest. Style over substance. So much fun, it makes me want to take up reading... Seriously, why do so many people love this abysmally paced game? You walk around aimlessly and interact with out-of-place objects to get the privilege of sitting through some half-baked poetic musings. Edith Finch this is not. I was only a half hour into Edith Finch, and something interesting and dynamic was going on. Here, I'm an hour and a half in, and nothing has happened apart from two cryptic sequences.
