Personally my favorite Total War game. There is no other campaign quite like the Eastern and Western Roman campaigns. They are very hard and challenge most players in a way that other Total War titles cannot. I also am heavily interested in this historical period and the campaigns start very accurate to the actual historical situation.

This game is the apex of 'original' Total War before the fantasy and hero influences. I am neither endorsing nor discrediting that shift, but if you want classic Total War at its best Attila is what you're looking for. Also has an excellent modding scene including Lord of the RIngs, Game of Thrones, and a brilliant mod that is essentially Total War: Medieval 3.

This is my favourite Total War game ever,
+ big campaign map with many playable factions and units, great workshop mod (i recommend 1212AD mod)
- cost you a lot for DLC, less optimized (I barely to run 3200 vs 3200 battle, got 10-20fps when zoomed in)

So Im up to review this game now that I'm 350ish hours in it. As costume Im gonna split the review in pro's and con's, so let get started:

Pro's:
- Great tactical battle simulator and the units are awesome, you want to play as Romans you can choose beteween Rome and Constantinople, want to be the spear that kills Rome, become a Hun, Goth, Vandal, or any Barbarian civ, or you can also become a Pasha for the Sassanids, its all up to you.
- REvamp your city from a humble settlement to a walled city to the capital of you empire.
- Survive sieges either as the attacker or as the defender.
- Trade valuable resources and use them in diplomacy.
- Diplomacy and sword are great to play, either one is good after all the game's called TOTAL WAR.
- With some practice and skill you can manuver your units on the battlefield.

Cons:
- It need to have a serious rebalance on many playing civilizations, like the huns and some OP units that just cant be killed.
- Has a long learning curve
- I just hate naval battles

All and all its a great game of the genre, dont miss it

Okay im gonna be honest in here, this the first time i played total war, and im addicted to it! When you play, you have to go set affinate and set priorities to make game not lag, its not about the ssd or ram, but you have to set it on taks bar and go to detail, press the right mouse and set the affinate and priorities.

Many of people troubled because of it, hopefully this is helpfull :)

Attila is Dark Souls, while the rest of total war is God of War.

Attila was my very first experience with the newer Total War games. I will never forget the hours I spent with every faction and the time I lost my anal virginity within the first two turns of a Western Roman Empire campaign.

Attila doesn’t follow the great formula of gameplay of the other TW games. Things are harder in Attila, more frantic and survival-focused, and there is a really steep learning curve to get the balance of settlement management which will entirely make-or-break your campaign.

I personally loved Attila, but I’m just a psychopath that enjoys painful and frustrating experiences. If you want a REAL challenge, give it a try.

It's apparently one of the worst selling and least popular of the Total War series, which is a shame. I have a theory that the narrower focused, smaller timeframe Total War games tend to be better and this is a fine example. It's got a brutally unforgiving combat system, an apocalyptic vibe and factions that genuinely play completely differently in campaign mode (desperately surviving as Rome is a very different experience to looking for a place to settle as the Goths, for instance. Sassanid opportunism is my favourite way to go)

What really sets it apart are the mods, though. I have no idea what drew so many talented and dedicated modders to this one, but it's mind blowing. The number of mods that remix and breathe new life into a game that already has a lot to offer. Medieval Kingdoms is, I know, going to be the gold standard against which a new medieval total war game will be judged and it wouldn't surprise me if the modders out do them.

Just a small tip, artillery is completely insane in this game, despite attempts to nerf it.

I hate CA so much for this. I would love to play this total war because I like the setting of Rome but don't like the game that much. But this mess is nearly unplayable for me. Its like the only game i have on my PC that crashes constantly... Ark survival evolved is a perfect game against this one. It could be so easy to make this game so enjoyable. Fixing the crashes would help the most but also the Performance as you probably know is not so good.

I just can't play it and CA will not fix it. You should just consider that buying that game does not mean you will be able to play it. And if you for some reason are you need to have in mind that ca doesn't care for this game so if it stops working for you at some day because of some total war launche s***t nobody will fix it. They just don't care.

The game itself is fine and fun. What is not fine is an unfixable unpredictable bug where your game will crash on launch. This bug occurs due to no player cause at all, it is completely random (sometimes it occurs sometimes it doesn't), any fixes you apply also only have a random chance of working, some will work for a while then not work again. Once this starts it seems impossible to rid of, and means you cannot play the game (because it won't start).
As long as CA sells a defective product you should boycott them and demand refunds where possible. It's shocking you can sell this on Steam.

This is probably the most underrated of the Total War series. It does have it's bugs, but overall it's a great deal of fun. I mean, it's Total War, you either like the series or you don't. The campaign is a bit more complicated than, say Medieval II (which is my favorite). The Influence and family stuff can be a little complicated. But overall another great TW title. So far I've also really enjoyed the DLC. The culture packs seem really fleshed out and play differently enough that it'll keep the game from getting stale.

The quintessential entry into the Total War game series. It's hard to imagine the franchise without this beautiful work of art, worth every dime spent. I highly recommend this game over other Total War games such as Shogun 2 or MEDIEVAL II, which are severely dated compared to the standards set by Total War: ATTILA. Thank you CREATIVE ASSEMBLY for this unforgettable masterpiece that defines the strategy genre.

This game is THE best total war. 10/10 i absolutely recommend.

It's better than Rome 2 but not the best TW game...Shogun 2 holds that honor with great ease. This game improves upon Rome 2 in every way: better AI, unit cards, campaign map options like destroying entire provinces, etc. Just read an in depth review if you are on the fence.

Total war veterans will enjoy this. It takes a while to get use to the new horde mechanics.... The game is brutally tough the first 50 turns if you want to play the western roman empire. It's also what makes this game great. I didn't really like it for the first 30 hours.. but I kept at it.. Now 260+ hours in this has game has me hooked. It is just a solid historical TW game.
Give it time and it will reward you.

Its a nice medieval age strategy game that comes with the legendary man Atilla
its not that hard to learn game basics you could learn in couple hours
I wasnt expecting a lot but when you get into that world you'll see this game has a potential
As I understand it while playing; every faction has their own mechanics to effect game progress
once you used to play one of the factions it will be easy to adjust others
if you like strategy games and if you are a medieval fan ; this game is worth to see for you
Gotta say something about my play style and that; i played with the strongest faction in this game and conquered all over the world and after finishing it, I didn't feel the urge to play the other factions. i felt like thats enough.
For me thats the downside of the game cause its not giving you to wonder how is it feel like to play other factions.
In the end its worth to see total war game.

First thing you need to know, this is quite a bit different from previous total war games. If you go into this game thinking you are going to steadily build up your cities, expand your territory and fight other factions doing the same things you are going to be disappointed. This is set in the Migration era, agricultural conditions are worsening, hordes assembling and the huns are coming, shit is about to go down. When you start a campaign you need to have this in mind and some knowledge of the real history might actually be useful. You need to be aware of where you are on the campaign map, don't stay put! If you play the romans, priorities! A lot of territory needs to be abandoned initially, you start very overstretched. If you start as a migrator tribe, well, it's in the name, migrate. Think about where you could find decent, fertile land that you might be able to defend and before you get there, sack cities, a lot of cities. If you chose to play he huns think like this - you are the schoolyard bully, beat everyone up an make them pay tribute.

If you embrace the setting and the chaos, uncertainty and destruction it brings you will have a much better time with this game. As hinted at before, reading up a little bit on the history of the time period and role play somewhat according to it, might help a great deal in enjoying the game, at least thats how I play and I'm having a lot of fun.

Probably the most complex historical TW in terms of mechanics and has some really fun factions to play with but the late game feels post-apocalyptic as most settlements get destroyed and most of Europe is covered in permafrost which hinders movement. Also awfully optimized and as of recently crashes on startup for me. The multiplayer community is mostly dead so don't expect too many matches. The only reason you'd still buy it is for all the really popular mods that are developed for it but I still wouldn't recommend it because if you can't run it properly, no point in doing that either. CA basically ended all the support for it 4-5 years ago so don't expect any help if you run into game-breaking bugs, glitches or in my case crashes. Overall, a no for me.

I mean , i got it for 10 euros , defientely worth it . Aside from the vanilla , the mods 1212AD and Ancient Empires will add lots of variation.

Only wished the game engine wouldnt stil be on 32 bit making the last gen hardware not being used at its full and leading to kinda crappy performance but you can get over it.

This review is less about the mechanics and more about the experience.

First off, I love this game dearly. A six year relationship I was in ended just about as bad as it possibly could. She ran off with a family friend and it left me devastated. Without the lady around I was able to throw myself into this game (and drink way too much). I didn't care about work or any responsibilities at that time, so I was able to completely immerse myself into this game.

I played as the Caledonians with a few mods to make the game longer. Divico was my faction leader. Pretty quickly off the bat his son was killed in battle against the Western Roman Empire. We took a city the Romans were hunkered down in (it was a brutal battle) and Divico killed the general responsible for his son's death in one on one combat. They were friends a few years prior. (Man I felt that betrayal and it was satisfying to watch Divico run that sword through him.)

Years passed afterwards. Divico was infertile and could not have another child (this game has so many cool traits for the characters and infertility is one of them), so I raised a massive army. We navigated the dangerous seas and did a beach landing somewhere in Northern Africa. After establishing a foot hold there, we invaded Italy. It was FREAKING AWESOME. We took Rome and named it after Divico's dead son. That was not enough though. Now it was time to move forward and conquer the known world before Divico's death.

After conquering 3/4s of the map, Divico realized there was nothing that would ever fill the void within him. So many years had passed with so many dead. His empire was spread thin and so was the loyalty of some of his men. In a brave charge, he sacrificed himself on the battlefield to hold off the enemy while his soldiers could withdrawal in a crushing defeat. Every major engagement in battle had him on the front lines with his men. Right after Divico's death, Attila invaded. My empire crumbled without a true leader and splintered.

This was the best Total War experience I've ever had. A part of me could relate to Divico's loss and not finding something to fill that void. I learned a lot about myself throughout this grand adventure. Divico's death was symbolic to me and I still think about that character from time to time now years later and everything he represented to me. For that alone, this game will always hold a special place in my heart.

I highly recommend this game and I hope you have a great experience with it.

As of 2021, having bought it on first release, this is still my favourite Total War since Empire, largely because it's TW with a brutal twist. Everything about this game conspires to make it an exercise in survival, not leisurely empire building, which probably makes it the freshest take on the stagnant Total War model.

The whole game has a wonderfully grim feel. Everything is bloody and brutal. Cities are burned to the ground on a regular basis. The seasons alone can ravage your armies if you don't find shelter. Food can be a serious problem, causing crippling public order penalties and army attrition. As the climate shifts, land becomes less fertile, forcing you to rejig your production buildings as the game goes on. Agents are hard to come by, but can be absolutely terrifying, even instigating civil wars.

The family tree returns. At first it seems a bit confusing and ephemeral, but as the game unfolds it develops a life of it's own that adds a layer of intrigue to the game. You want to build up a power base for your family, in order to get the nationwide stability bonuses. Disloyal generals can be brought back into the fold, or if you fail to keep a check on them, can run away with half your army, even a provinces, and start a bloody civil war, usually at the worst time. If your funds are low, which they always are, you can embezzle funds, giving you a huge cash injection if successful. It's a powerful tool that does help build a relationship with your characters as the game goes on.

Battles are swift and dynamic, often resulting in the annihilation of both armies. The AI is actually quite clever and resist cheap attempts at flanking them surprisingly well. I really love that they made fatigue a real mechanic. Rather than something that simply drains over the course of a battle, here it drains much quicker but can also be recovered quickly, benefiting cavalry charge cycles in particular.

Diplomacy actually serves the tone of the game here too, despite being Total Wars weakest feature by far. Here you don't use it to try to roleplay, create serious alliances or wish you could mold the world through words rather than the sword. In Attila, diplomacy is a very temporary, desperate tool. This is true total war, as almost every faction ends up fighting with every other faction, as the hordes are forced in everyone else's territory. At most you try to broker temporary trade deals or extract cash by agreeing to war, or uneasy peace after bludgeoning an enemy into submission. You know if you don't wipe them out they'll be back later, but sometimes a cash injection to face more immediate troubles is the safer choice.

It feels like there's a lot going in the world outside your own actions. You regularly hear about other factions being destroyed, while new ones pop up as successful rebellions are common.

Building up your cities is an exercise in frugality. Money isn't the easiest thing to come by from provinces, leading you to sack and loot your way to wealth, encouraging military aggression. Territories are regularly traded and with the dozens of marauding hordes it's hard to truly secure any part if your empire without constant military presence. The game encourages risk taking as a result, if you want to build momentum. For a long while, mercenaries will be the fodder of your forces. Recruit them on the fly, send into the slaughter, bring in the loot, rince and repeat. It gives building armies a much faster pace to support your lightning raids until you really unlock the heavy troops.

It's Total War, but this time not a power fantasy. Rather a sadistic challenge that is as satisfying as it is punishing.

Solid game. Disappointingly light on historical event prompts, and features an intriguing family tree+diplomacy element to the game, both of which end up being rather superfluous to the outcome of each game. I am sure that mods can fix this deficiency. I highly recommend Attila nonetheless.

Here is my opinion, no one has to agree.

Attila, to me is the only total war game I have played since Medieval 2 where I can see the glitches really affecting the gameplay.

Now that being said, I give Attila a thumbs up. The City battle experience are an upgrade from Rome 2 for me. Much more fun to defend or attack. Barricade yes please!

Final thoughts to keep it short, I would not recommend this game at full price. Wait for a discount. If you love total war franchise, you should enjoy this one at the right price.

If you like civ but want more engaging battles, then this series is for you.
The prologue was fun! Some things were confusing and you could not do multiple things that you are supposed to do in a main campaign. But through that confusion, I spent some time reading forums and the guide to help me through a rewarding process! In the prologue, you are supposed to be losing, so do not worry too much about having proper buildings/public order/squalor. If you stick with the prologue to the end, you will find yourself enjoying a very well made game!

I wouldn't really call this a truly negative review, though it would for sure be a neutral rating at best. Attila has it's advantages over other Total War titles, but at the end of the day it's very underwhelming and doesn't do Total War justice. Granted though, it's nothing to the horrible level of Three Kingdoms or Troy.

What I Noticed:

Graphics: The visual look of the game is for sure an upgrade. The only exception being ugly view distance making the horizon or your regiments of units look like twigs and stick figures. Optimization however was atrocious. It seems that CA gave up on trying to fix their issue (if they even tried at all), as they've had 5+ years to do so. You'll get constant FPS drops in battle when all video settings are turned to the max, regardless of your PC's capability.
Voice Acting/Audio: I really liked the small ambient details put into the atmosphere. When in battle, your troops will make various comments based on what you're doing or what's going on around them. The voice acting was overall pretty good; close to the level of Medieval 2, but no cigar. Arrows made a pretty decent noise when shown to impact troops. The music however was nothing special and practically just a background filler. Gone are the days of Jeff van Dyck and his amazing soundtracks.
Combat/Animations: The fighting animations for units was... pretty horrible to say the least. Soldiers in Medieval 2 showed enthusiasm and involvement in the battle while soldiers in Attila just try to lightly poke and prod at each other every now and then. It made my immersion in the battle pretty weak. I also noticed units clip into the ground on uneven terrain. Of course, they massacred the visuals of the ranged projectiles making them look like wet noodles slowly flying through the air. Turning off the wet noodle effect only made it impossible to see where the arrows were going. The shooting animations for crossbowman looked like they weren't even complete. They would just look around their shoulder every two seconds, fire off a shot, do an instant reload, and then rinse dry and repeat the cycle.
Campaign/UI: I could not wrap my head around the new campaign user interface. It was not very simplistic and everything was shoved into the corners of the screen. Not to mention that when you click on the report of a major/important event, an obnoxiously loud and long gong sound will play for every single one.

TL:DR: This isn't the worst Total War but it sure isn't even close to the best. It's clear not much effort was put into this game and it severely missed the mark as a result. What's even more clear is that CA didn't learn from their mistakes and continued to make them in future Total War entries, time and time again. Not to mention Blood and Gore is a paid DLC. Need I say more on that?

Played Western Roman Empire on legendary difficulty. As a lifelong strategy game player, I've never had a challenge like that from an AI. A single misstep caused cities to burn and whole areas of the map to get wiped out, and that really makes you feel connected to the outcome- you're not just painting a map, you're desperately surviving until you've killed your enemies to the last man. IF you can beat the game as WRE on legendary and remain christian, I'd be terrified of what you could do in real life.

Looks & plays like a re-skinned Rome II which today isn't a bad thing but for those of us who knew how terrible Rome II was on day one, it is a sour taste. If you enjoy difficult campaigning then this is going to be a great game for you. I'm not the most skilled player but have owned & conquered many of the Total War series from Rome 1 to Alexander to Barbarian Invasions to Empire & Napoleon but have never encountered campaigns so difficult even on easy.

Attila is everything I wanted Rome 2 to be. Very tactical, with lots of features, high difficulty and most of all, high replayability. There's a lot of improvements compared to Rome 2, and its hard to list all of them so I'll just focus on the stuff that's the most impactfull.

First of all, migrations were a stroke of genius. I genuinely can't overstate how much more fun the campaign is when different factions may decide to pack up their things and leave for greener pastures (sometimes literally so). It makes it far less predictable who you'll end up facing off with and it makes the spread of factions across the campaign map a lot more chaotic, which is great.

The difficulty of the game is way higher, partially because autoresolve is less reliable, partially because the AI is just way more aggressive both in battles and the campaign. While battles often still have a tendency to devolve into huge concentrated brawls it now feels like the AI at least makes an effort to flank your forces or harass you with missiles before engaging. Not only that, but mechanics like having to manage squalor and local food production, fertility and climate change, and of course the Hunnic invasion make the campaign far more challenging. You'll fight bitterly for every inch of land, which I love.

The technology system is massively improved as well. While it still works the same in theory, you are no longer required to discard entire armies and rebuild them with new higher tier units. Instead, as you hit technology milestones, your faction unlocks higher tier units, and you can for a small fee upgrade your low tier units into higher tier units. This is a HUGE improvement, as it rewards you for keeping your early game units alive since experience carries over between upgrades, and it makes factions evolve over time. For instance, barbarian factions rely on on cheap, swarming hordes of light melee infantry, but as your technology improves they become more deadly and better equiped.

There's also loads of small improvements that make the game far more enjoyable. The ability to switch your faction's religion during play gives you a much better ability to change up your favorite faction's mechanics. Diseases no longer break out randomly to mess up your plans, instead they come from poorly managed squalor, which feels more fair. The family system requires less micromanagement and the decisions you make for your family feel more impactful (for instance, marrying a wife from another faction can be a great decision both in helping you get more allies and in getting a guaranteed good wife for your general). The fact that small villages now have walls, even if this is at the end of the tech tree, is so much better than Rome 2's system where the AI will often rampage through your smaller towns if an army gets through your front lines becuase those have no defensive bullwarks and don't need to be sieged. The win condition no longer requires you to hold a ton of territory (including territory that may be held by trading partners) and instead just tells you to SURVIVE.

So, knowing the good, what's the bad stuff in Attila?

Lots of little stuff makes the game really unforgiving. If you don't properly manage the spread of your religion, newly conquered settlements are almost impossible to stop from rebelling. If you end up at war with too many factions, you can end up being overwhelmed fairly easily. Losing one settlement can seriously mess you up, since for example, if you lose a settlement that you were relying on for food production, your entire faction can start starving as a direct result. If you lose a settlement you had all your sanitation buildings in for that province, you can end up suffering from disease outbreaks which are far FAR more devastating than they were in Rome 2.

But by far the worst part about the game is, ironically, the Huns. They're definitely not all bad. They give the campaign a persistent sense of dread, it's both scary and amazing to watch them burn their way through eastern europe towards the west, and in battle they are an absolute nightmare to face due to their top tier cavalry and horse archers.
But the biggest issue is, by far, how the campaign handles the Huns. When Attila himself is spawned and the razing of europe begins, the Huns constantly spawn full armies to attack their enemies with. At first this is not a huge issue, as the first few waves are going to consist of low tier units and attack you only infrequently... But they get stronger. Every successive wave of Huns will consist of higher tier units until you're facing off against devil cavalry. At that point, your defenses might still hold, but the further the Hunnic frontline pushes against your kingdom, the more rapidly the Huns spawn. They don't run on an economy, and the only way to stop more free Hun armies from spawning is to kill Attila, and THAT is the biggest problem with the game. If you didn't prepare a spy to assassinate Attila when he arrives, somehow managed to face off with Attila in battle and slay him directly, or get rediculously lucky and have some other faction accidentally kill the big guy, the Huns will never stop spawning free armies, and good luck finding him when the frontline against the Huns mostly consists of desolate wasteland and spans from modern day Germany to Syria. Eventually, they'll overwhelm your defenses, and then you'll lose your 200ish turn campaign.

Still, despite some complaints, this game is to Rome 2 what automobiles were to horse-and-carts. Still not perfect, but a huge step up nonetheless.

This is probably actually the best Total War game to be released, but needing DLC to unlock blood and around $90's worth of other DLC for features that just used to be included with a game on purchase is a little too predatory for my taste.

I used to be able to call Attila a beautiful disaster that could be mostly fixed by mods, but after Creative Assembly made the big brain move to have their titles share a launch menu (probably to entice people to buy their other shit), that updated Attila, rendering dozens of quality-of-life mods invalid. Normally I would just try to change the version of the game I was playing to a previous one that supports said mods, but that didn't work and I don't want to piss away any more time on troubleshooting that. If you want RTS combat that's more complex than stuff like Age of Empires and are a Late Antiquity nerd, you may be able to enjoy this game despite all its flaws (others have covered those in excellent detail) and find mods that still work to make it better, but holy shit is it a mess.

Best historical Total War title since Medieval 2, and best mods outside of Medieval 2 mods.

Its popularity has sadly been hampered by the distrust caused by Rome 2's disastrous launch, coupled with clunky optimization and lazy design choices.

Rome 2 has been chosen by Creative Assembly to be the DLC cash cow for historical Total War fans, but the much stronger fundamentals of Attila make it a much better vehicle for profitable DLC content (e.g. the Age of Charlemagne DLC), if only they appointed someone to work on minor updates for Attila.

There's a reason the Rise of Mordor mod is being made for Attila, not Rome 2. Just like the Medieval 1212 AD mod (which you might as well call Medieval 3, at this point). Hell, even classical antiquity is funnier to play in Attila thanks to the Ancient Empires mod (yes, even better than Divide et Impera for Rome 2; fight me, plebs).

Please CA, if you're not going to make another ambitious historical title anytime soon, stop ignoring the game with the strongest fundamentals you've ever made since Medieval 2 and unleash its true potential.

Rome 2 was the best game in the series for me.. until I played this. Attila took hundreds of hours of my life and it still feels like a brand new game when I play it. Has flaws of course but so minor that you just don't even notice them. Recommend this to any fans of the Total War series. CUNTH approves.

A unique take on the Total War format, rather than just CONQUER EVERYTHING it's more of a survival mode, especially when playing as one of the migrating factions (recommended). Flee the Huns, build up a small sanctuary in some corner of the world or a lone island, and begin your slow return to the big time. I've beaten all Total Wars on Legendary and this was by far the hardest (and relied the most on diplomacy). I hated this and called it the worst Total War, now I love it and can put it was top 3.

Best of the recent Total War games. It's a bit different to the previous games in some ways and takes a bit more getting used to, it's also pretty hard compared to all the other TW games, but once you've gotten past a certain early threshold it becomes quite easy. It's quite fun, but always feels like an uphill struggle. Some mechanics seem a little odd and some units perform either way better or way worse than you'd expect. I'd choose this over Rome, but Napoleon, Empire and Rome 1 will always be my preferences. Worth picking up when on sale.

Price point is a bit high, however for sure worth it if on sale, although I bought it at full price 6 months ago, and didn't really touch it a whole lot, was quite shocked by the initial difficulty when playing Western or Eastern Rome, and shelved until I had more time to invest in it, was never sure if it was worth the money.

However having finally come back to it, and to play West Rome proper, I must say it's the best one to do date, and although I would suggest getting it on sale, I had no regrets getting it at full price, I would say it is even better than Three Kingdoms, and Warhammer 2, the latter game I have been playing a lot and really enjoying too. What makes it better is the combat in this game feels really really good, I would say even better than Shogun 2.

You can have battles where you may only have a 10% chance of winning and tactics actually favour the victor, as opposed to other games in the series where even if you are smart morale debuffs are way too effective, in this game they are their but feel fair, fitting of a game where you are instantly put on the back pedal having to defend your land from a number of factions (if playing as Rome). Makes unlikely defences really fun to play, as opposed to just auto resolving and giving up, all be it that still happens once and a while either due to personal negligence of looking after land or just not caring about every single province.

Besides the combat, the feeling and setting is really unique, and for sure feels different, if not scary and lonely at times, but in a good way really keeps you feeling like each turn is another step in your factions survival during a period of change, eradication, and chaos.

I can see myself playing this for quite a while, and doing coop with mates, for sure fun, and a nice continuation of Rome 2.

The best Total War there is. Attila is the most difficult of all Total Wars, which is also indicated by the game's goals: Unlike in other TW where you need to conquer some areas, in Attila your goal is just to survive, and keeping a larger area is practically impossible until late game. This is achieved by standard faction wars, nomads trespassing territories and unique environmental impact of climate change making the survival harder with time.

In addition, Attila introduced meaningful destruction of settlements during siege battles (ie. can be burned to damage morale of defenders), re-introduced horde factions, and FINALLY has realistic looking settlements (without fantasy high walls). Attila also looks gloomy, which fits perfectly the theme of the game.

The only drawback is that without DLCs the variety of factions is limited and most of them are either Romans or Germanics, while the rest is too easy to play. DLCs are uneven too, for example, Slavs one-shot everything with their archers. However, all other Total Wars seem bleak in comparison with Attila's unique difficulty and survival mechanics.

It is worth to buy this game for mods only. Modders and the fanbase are the only thing that encouraged me to buy it. Becouse only modded version is somewhat enjoyable for me. Im a Total War veteran. I enjoyed the most first Rome, Medieval 2 and Shogun 2. I also played first Medieval and Napoleon, avoided Empire and Rome 2 becouse of terrible AI and annoying mechanics. I thought that Attila will be better, and I was disappointed.

When I first bought the game I thought I will be enjoying a huge, interesting and difficult campaign. That I will be carefully planning my moves and military campaigns thanks to various and detailed maps, that I will be fighting in exciting and huge battles, protect cities, street after street, falling back to inner walls and barricades, that I will burn the cities and raze them to the ground, that I will enjoy great graphics, and overall gameplay. Oh boy, was I wrong.

In the campaign, I didnt have to plan anything. There was no military campaign that seemed hard and challenging enough to waste time on checking the maps and planning moves. The AI will not protect its territories and will do just random, sensless things. Did you want to have a nice historical experience of the campaign? Then you will not find it here, becouse, starting before 400AD, Rome will not hold for next 20 turns and will fall like a century before it historically did, it starts as theoretically biggest military power but thanks to incapable AI, Roman armies are always nowhere to be seen. You will see tribes wich in history did not do much to do a lot, and those that mattered in history to not matter at all in this game. Playing as Saxons I expected nice fights in British scenery with the Celtic tribes but little of that occured. The Celts were bothered with conquering Galia and Hispania, leaving their British territories defenceless, and the Scandinavians, who should also target Britain, did the same thing as the Celts. And this happens always, all the time. Mainland barbarian tribes are doing nothing. They do not care about their historical targets and territories they should want. If most of Roman territory is conquered, barbarians will not fight each other for it. When Galia was conquered by the Ebdani and Jutes, Franks, who still had one province, instead of fighting other barbarians for the nearest territory, seemed it fit to just try to invade Roman territories in Spain. Leaving their homeland defenceless, of course. I just steamrolled everything and everyone, even on hardest difficulties, and my skills had nothing to it. You will need no skills. You will just autoresolve most of the battles becouse situations when the chances are equal will be very rare - the AI will not bother to have any strategic advantage over you. And when that rare opportunity to have a big battle occurs there will be yet another disappointment. You will not enjoy any good graphics becouse optimization in this game is a joke. The game is just a slideshow without specific mods improving this matter. And after you get rid of terrbile optimization you will be disappointed once more. The AI will not bother with commanding units in a smoewhat organised and intelligent way. There will be no battle in which the AI will be a threat to you. There will be no interesting sieges too - the AI will just throw all of its units into a single alley and you will easily surround them and cut them down. And the public order system is as annoying as useless. It is almost impossible to keep your people happy, but after some time I realised that there was no point in it. The rebels that spawn when your people are angry have only some units on the first turn and are theoretically supposed to get more over time, but it never happens. The rebel AI, instead of gathering forces, attacks nearest settlement on the first turn, and gets smashed by the garrison.

In overall: The AI is terrible. On the maps I cannot look anymore becouse of bordergore. Battles are easy and disappointing. Diplomacy is senseless and disappointing. Campaigns are easy, boring, and disappointing. The game is not worth its price. But the modders community is. If you want to play the mods - then buy this game.

Have not played that much only about 35 hours but ive played 100s of hours more of rome 2 and medieval 2 and compared to both it has its pros and cons.
1. Its a lot harder overall very little hand holding, but once you find the exploits the game is way too easy. Example being western rome and the interest on gold.
2. There is a lot more going on there is always some sort of action no matter where you are
Cons
1. Religion is kinda wack
2. Units are unbalanced and in some cases really op or under powered

Flawed masterpiece still worth playing for its innovative & challenging campaign mechanics

First, the elephant in the room: ‘Attila’ is poorly optimized, to the extent that it runs worse than its predecessor Rome 2 (or at least, worse than Rome 2 in its current, final, ‘Emperor Edition’ state).

We’re talking half the frame rate of R2 with equivalent graphics settings - and the Attila engine is evidently unable to take advantage of the brute power of modern graphics cards to get itself out of trouble - so don’t think that this warning doesn’t apply to you just because you have a modern GPU.

At best, your Nvidia 2060 will allow you to add 8x AA and x16AF, SSAO, DoF and maybe distortion effects (i.e. aspects of rendering internal to the GPU) while the game waits for your CPU to compute shadows, unit detail, trees, grass, terrain i.e. whatever game assets are hardcoded to be handled by the processor only.

Having said that, ‘poorly optimized’ does not mean ‘broken’: the game is stable to the extent that I can’t recall any crashes. So it’s a question of what you as a player are prepared to put up with: this is a game that struggles to run its own internal benchmark - a short scenario featuring less than twenty units - satisfactorily on maximum settings; so it’s really no wonder that siege battles featuring four full stacks degenerate into slide-shows.

As a result, I have found myself autoresolving multi-army siege battles that I would otherwise have enjoyed - a sad thing to say about a game in which epic confrontations should be the highpoints of a playthrough, not an ordeal to be sidestepped.

Ok, on to the game itself:

Attila was the first recent TW game to reintroduce the horde mechanic, whereby some factions don’t have any settlements but instead camp wherever the hell they like, a mechanic which increases scope for creative playstyles. Moreover it adds a new dimension even if you don’t play as a horde yourself, since dealing with hordes is a new challenge for settled factions too; and if you lose your last settlement, you may find yourself playing as a horde after all!

The new ability to 'raze' (obliterate) captured settlements also adds creativity, since the player (and the AI too) now has the option to delete entire cities from the map rather than overextend their empire by capturing them, or risk having to return at some point after merely 'sacking' them - now there is a more permanent solution available.

This can be used to create buffer zones of inhospitable wasteland around your core provinces; or (Attila allows you to abandon i.e. raze your OWN settlements) in desperate circumstances you can employ a 'scorched earth' policy to deny an advancing enemy the benefit of the region they are about to capture.

The option to 'recolonise' abandoned/razed settlements, though costly in men and gold, provides a means for players with the necessary funds to snap up some of the devastated real estate left in the Huns' wake (providing, that is, you are confident they are really gone...).

And if you are playing as a horde and you capture a prosperous, fertile or easily-defensible settlement, you have the dilemma of whether it might not be a good moment to settle after all.

Food is now on a per-province basis so no subsidising your hungrier provinces from more productive ones.

Climate change may sound like it’s been shoe-horned in by politically correct developers but is actually a really solid game mechanic since it adds incentive for factions to migrate south to more fertile lands (as well as west, to escape the Huns).

The Huns represent a fascinating dilemma for the player: do you evade or confront them? Indeed the mid-game can feel more like survival horror than strategy if you find yourself isolated against multiple hordes: there's no doomstack like a Hun doomstack...

A raiding horde also 'steals' food from the host province, thus decreasing public order and preventing resident units from replenishing so 'hoping they just go away' is not a foolproof response.

Army integrity feels like it should always have been a feature of Total War games, particularly when combined with attrition when marching in snowy or desert regions (a mechanic missing from, say, Rome 2).

Army traditions were already in R2 but are even more valuable now, because you can spec your army to be, say, resistant to snow attrition.

Customizing your generals/governors (and indeed spies etc) is an interesting challenge but gets a bit tiresome late on when you have numerous agents and armies.

The politics system manages not to be obnoxious for once, not least because here, civil war is not ‘scripted’ (i.e. inevitable at some point). However the key mechanic (of striving for a balance between authoritarianism and lack of control) is somewhat counter-intuitive so perusing a community guide or two is highly recommended.

I also like the crucial role that female characters play here behind the scenes, rather than appearing on the battlefield as they did in Rome 2. The versatility of influential noblewomen as 'fixers' (providing everything from loyalty boosts for wavering generals to outright assassinations) means that careful attention to the diplomatic marriage market can be even more valuable here than in other TW games.

Diplomacy seems to work better than average, with factions for the most part seeming to act in their plausible self-interest.

Steam achievements are well integrated and comprehensive although the absence of specific recognition for completing a campaign on 'hard' or 'very hard' feels like a slight to non-legendary players.

The usual several victory conditions strike a good balance between challenge and fairness (at least, in my experience) and I particularly appreciate the absence of arbitrary time limits. Rewards for simply surviving until certain dates feel earned and the optional goals for each 'chapter' provide some ideas about what direction you might want to take with your faction whilst representing no great loss if you choose to ignore them and go your own way.

The tech tree is set out more logically than in R2 and allows the player to 'customize' their faction in a variety of directions e.g. do you go for elite spearmen before swordsmen? Or is sanitation (or eking a bit more food out of the increasingly barren soil) the better priority? Conceivably you could experience two very different playthroughs with the same faction as a result.

Faction variety is excellent, to the extent that playthroughs with, say, the Sassanids, the seafaring Danes or the snow-resistant Slavs provide very different challenges.

Unit variety is also very good and provides a particular incentive to recruiting exotic mercenaries when marching far from home.

Attila also offers for purchase some of the best DLC expansions in the Total War series, namely 'Age of Charlemagne' and 'The Last Roman'.

Minor annoyances:

Why can’t I look at the initial post-battle screen for as long as I want?

Why can’t I target an enemy siege tower directly, rather than only being allowed to fire at the enemy unit that is pushing it? Are siege towers protected by some Geneva Convention I don’t know about??

The sheer awkwardness of placing units on certain types of terrain (typically, ‘farmland’-style landscapes, frequently encountered around settlements) suggests that the CA ‘terrain-scaping’ team never actually played any battles themselves.

End turn times are long compared to later games e.g. TWWH. Here, you literally have time to go make a cup of tea.

TLDR:

DON’T BUY IT if you are just looking for a graphically-improved Rome 2 that will run as smoothly as Rome 2 does these days;
DON’T BUY IT if you would actually prefer to play Total War Warhammer, Thrones of Britannia or Three Kingdoms but assume that an OLDER title will run better on your pc (it won’t);

DO BUY IT if interesting campaign mechanics are more important to you than game engine optimization.

Before going legit, I pirated this game and played it for about two entire summers. I'd wake up, start playing, and go to bed. I still managed to rack up 107 hrs on my official steam account lol

There is nothing new that I can say about this game that hasn't been said already.

I am a very big fan of the Total War series and I would score this game at a 8.5/10. The modding community is huge and also the Medieval period mod is stable, as of now.

Just buy it already.

Very good Total War title, still prefer Medieval 2 though.
