Warhammer 40k Dawn of War II Chaos Rising steht seinem Vorgänger in nichts nach.

A truly awful sequel, it misses everything that made the original a fun game. It's very frustrating to play a tactical game when control keeps being yanked away from you to show a cut-scene. The interface shakes so much, all of the time. Many more railroad-track maps compared to the open-map tracks of the original. So many teleporting enemies. So many weapons that knockback my squads. How am I supposed to be tactical when the interface is shaking and exploding and things are teleporting everywhere and my squads are flying through the air in all directions?

Loved the original; despised the sequel.

The game is OK... but short... way too short campaign :( I played it on sergeant and it was fun... maybe on higher difficulty will take longer ?_? It was fun but short... get it on a sale... DoW 2 Master Collection style :) if not get the first one Dawn of War collection... :) Soulstorm and Dark Crusade are still beloved :)
Down of War 2 has an OK-ish campaign... but not being able to play skirmish vs AI offline, being included in the multiplayer tab... is a big NO NO for me :(

It was disappointing to play a game called Chaos Rising and not be allowed to play as the bad guys right from the start.
The corruption dynamic is fun and really spices up the gameplay.
The difficulty of the missions was raised, now requiring more skill and thinking. Which is welcome.
On the other hand, the difficulty levels of the campaign are a bit meaningless: basically more hit points on the bad guys. I played on Captain difficulty and as far as I am concerned, the only difference was that it took me longer time to beat the bosses because they had absurdly high number of hit points.
The Space Hulk missions are VERY welcome. I played the original board game (Space Hulk) a long time ago (1996-ish), and when Starcraft launched (1998-ish) I saw the chance to have similar Aliens-like kind of missions in RTS, with space marines in a ship, but it lacked the buildup of the table top games. I mean it just feels wrong that a bunch of marines kill so many bugs and don't get any kind of reward afterwards. Some level ups, some bigger guns... Hey, took a while to see this in an RTS. This has been QUITE the flashback. But it felt good.

“Souls are both playthings and currency in the Warp.”

If Chaos Rising had just been released, you’d have been forgiven for thinking Relic made it on the back of reading my review for Dawn of War II (that review went up yesterday, so it would have been an impressive turnaround).

Whilst retaining Dawn of War II’s gameplay innovations, Chaos Rising restores some of the original game’s superior elements, namely the theatre of it all. Dawn of War's distinctive character came stuffed with portentous cosmic threat, but the first proper sequel was a blander affair.

Now it's back and as stuffed as that sentence, which in my estimation is exactly what 40k should be.

One year on from the thwarted Tyranid invasion of sub-sector Aurelia, the system’s namesake planet emerges from the Warp after a millennia, sheathed in ice. What should be a desolate world save for bad memories and glacial ruin is instead emitting a Blood Ravens signal, luring the heroes of sub-sector Aurelia into a war with their corrupted brethren, the forces of Chaos.

What a relief!

Chaos allows for an amplification of tone, and its leaders, Eliphas the Inheritor (?) and Araghast the Pillager (!), supply the excessive villainy required to take it there.

It’s also what gives this expansion pack its defining feature: the corruption system. Although the campaign is more linear than Dawn of War II (there are less optional missions, but given these were one of that game’s weaker bits it’s not to be mourned), there’s a branching pathway in place that responds to how closely aligned you are with Chaos.

For instance, one mission includes a team of scouts who have been pinned down by the enemy. Scout master Cyrus, who trained a bunch of these guys, insists he accompany you on the mission. If you choose not to assign Cyrus to your squad then he gains corruption, which is measured by a kind of purity bar.

There’s a bunch of examples like this, as well as optional mission objectives that sway you one way or the other and tainted wargear that, while powerful, will corrupt the user.

It’s an easier game if you choose to go full-throated Chaos, because doing the right thing is rarely easy. You often have to go out of your way to complete objectives that keep you in the Chapter’s good books.

There is a consequence to all of this, which I won’t spoil other than to say it’s fairly rewarding, even though it exposes how thin the game’s characters really are. But it does respect your arc through the story, something a lot of non-linear narratives get wrong.

“The courage with which you show us your hind quarters does your Emperor proud.”

On the whole the missions themselves have seen a substantial improvement. There’s greater variety both between and within missions, making for a less repetitive experience. This is reflected in the new locations as well, many of which feel properly cinematic and boast a richer colour palette than...well, any location in Dawn of War II that hadn’t been infested with Tyranid spores.

And in a first for the series there’s a couple of missions that take place indoors, meaning you’ll need to be (extra) smart about who you deploy.

If I had a complaint it would be the repetition of certain plot beats. Chaos Rising follows a very similar track to the original Dawn of War, once again telling of a Chaos lord seeking to release a monstrous daemon from its imprisonment. Dawn of War II is just as guilty, recycling the whole thing about the Eldar manipulating the Orks to some greater purpose.

It’s a little baffling as to why this particular series is only capable of imagining a limited set of tales when the 40k universe is so large, with thousands and thousands of pages devoted to telling it stories.

Maybe Dawn of War's story was just that good.

(it wasn't.)

“The walls between reality and the warp are thinning...breaking…”

Revisiting Dawn of War has been a joy. I’m properly impressed by Relic’s ability to innovate with each expansion pack, with their restless creative spirit. So far they all feel unique, offering substantially different play styles while improving and refining the core gameplay.

If it means more games this distinctive and fun, then by all means: blood for the blood god.

A worthy expansion to the original DoW2. I only played the campaign, which is a direct sequel to the vanilla campaign. Chaos Rising campaign has a few differences and additions while the gameplay is mostly the same as the previous entry as a squad-based RTS/RPG hybrid following the same characters. One addition is a new Psyker character who seems to fit in well with the team. Honestly, I did not use him too much since I really liked using most of the other characters instead. He is like a spell casting character, so he's fun if you like micromanagement. I am lazy and enjoy characters who you can leave AFK and will be just fine, so he's not quite my thing. There are also a few new wargear such as the beloved melta guns.

The campaign is also more streamlined in terms of mission selection. There are a few optional missions still, although they do not repeat, unlike the previous game. So the game is more linear and you cannot prolong the end by doing optional missions forever if that is your thing. All in all the game took about half the time of the original to complete, but it was a great experience and I think has some replayability.

Chaos RIsing also introduces a morality system. Choices you make in the game, or ignoring squad members desires to participate in certain missions can lead to corruption. An outcome near the end of the game, and even the ending itself are based on this morality system. You can even make new builds through new learned skills based on your corruption or purity. Going in, I thought I would dislike this system since I'm a goody two shoes but it wasn't too bad to stay pure. Now I'm also intrigued to try again with corruption and see what I may have missed.

Characters and story are great as usual. I may even like the story better than the original. If you like Dawn of War 2 campaign, you will definitely want to pick this up to continue it.

This a decent addition to base game. There are some new planets, weapons, skills, mission variety, hero (pretty useless at harder levels) and a whole new corruption mechanic in this campaign. Plus, the supply system is branched into a couple areas. Also, there are some new narrative elements like choosing to talk to people, unlockable entry, optional corruption quests. However, some weird reason, you can’t skip the cutscenes in this campaign. You are forced to watch it, even if you repeat the mission. And again, game has its old problems while different endings have only a couple different lines. Other than that, it has the most obnoxious font at the levelling screen. As multiplayer and Last Stand, there is chaos race for multiplayer and there are two new heroes for the Last Stand. So, don’t expect too much from this DLC and you will be satisfied with your purchase.

An amazing game. The game can be played and launched separately from Dawn Of War II But also can be played and launched along side it (Hence why my time played is so low as I launch it from Dawn Of War II). If you own Dawn Of War II you can play both Chaos Rising and Dawn Of War II by launching just one of them without having to switch between. If you enjoyed Dawn Of War II, I definitely recommend playing this.

Its not Dawn of War good, but its good.
You can use your DoW2 game data so you can continue with the same force commander and all the upgrades you got, wich gives you the feel you get to progress with an RPG character.
Gameplay is more a diabloesque isometric hero squad management, rather than RTS. If you like 40k universe you'll have a good time. If you're looking for a 40k RTS, look somewhere else (like in Dawn of war 1 with all the expansions).
The story is bland though, and the content ain't much to look at. Just more DoW2.

6/10 would play when bored.

Such a wonderful 40k game. I am in particular, referring to the campaign section, as I don't care for the skirmishes or multiplayer myself. This game truly captures the feeling of how Space Marines operate. In the campaign of DoW II you are tasked to lead half a dozen squads of Space Marines to victory against 3 alien invasion forces, namely, the brutish Orks, the cunning Eldar, and the ravenous Tyranids. Throughout the course of the campaign, one truly gets a sense of how powerful the Adeptus Astartes really are, as your Force Commander and 3 additional squads of Space Marines devestates entire armies wherever you deploy. Both the base campaign, and its expansion, Chaos Rising feature ARPG like gameplay, where you are commanding a few squads of customizable and upgradable Marines capable of incredible feats on their own, but when combined, make a truly unstoppable fighting machine.

The aforementioned expansion, Chaos Rising offers a more linear campaign, but what it lacks in freedom, it makes up for in story. Every mission in Chaos Rising brings you closer to discovering the true intentions of the Imperium's greatest enemy, Chaos. It is up to you, your squad, and your faith in the Emperor to smite the enemies of the Golden Throne and cleanse the Aurelius Sector of all threats.

All in all, I would highly recommend DoW II and its first expansion pack, Chaos Rising, for any fans of 40k, Relic's understanding of Warhammer 40k led to the creation of one of the most immersive and enjoyable experiences ever to be produced under Games Workshop, and should not be missed by fans of Warhammer 40k.

Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising is a game with a really long name that also makes you dislike aliens.

You once again play as Vanilla Ice, force commander, though considering how small your cohort is, you're more like a Captain with really nice hair. Set a year after the events of Dawn of War II, the capital planet of Aurelia returns from the warp, which is spooky and also not a good thing if you know how the warp works. But there's a Blood Raven distress signal, so we of course have to check it out.

Things just kind of go downhill from there.

Chaos Rising, as the name implies, adds the Necrons.
Haha, fooled you, I mean they add Chaos, the evil version of Space Marines + All their stinky allies like demons and idiot cultists who will basically do anything if you convince them the Chaos Gods want them to do it.
Convince them to shove crayons in their belly button, they'll do it.

The story mode is a continuation of the original, but with a new feature in the form of corruption. Your choices and equipment will decide just how much of a Chaos loving dirt bag you are through the story. Don't retake shrines of the Emperor? Heresy. Don't help out imperial forces in need? Heresy. Use tainted weapons and armor you took off the corpses of dead Heretics?
You better believe that's a heresy.

Its a neat system, and the entire story causes interesting divides within your party. Is there a traitor? Who is it? Who's the smelliest butthole in your repertoire? Is it you? Are you the smelly butthole?

The gameplay is much the same as Dawn of war II, so what it does to mix it up outside of new missions is to try and entice you into doing something bad. Its not really a morality system as much as it is a bribe. The corrupted weapons you picked up are usually much stronger than your usual weapons, so there's this drive to use them.

It only really comes into play on harder difficulties, if you're having trouble with the main game. A boss or a mission could be beating your booty something fierce, so how do you beat it? You could keep doing trial and error, but the missions can get really long and you've been known to forget to save. Or! Or... You could use this chainsword, or this gun, or this set of armor. It's bonuses are great, you just need to sell your soul to the ruinous powers of Chaos.

You weren't using your soul anyway.

Chaos itself is a nice addition, though they took me sometime to get use to. I'm not experienced, smart, or sexy enough to go into great detail, but they have some fun units to mess with. They seem to be Chaos Undivided, but there's a greater emphasis on Nurgle than there is the other Chaos Gods.
Your tier 3 unit is a big stinky boy.

You also get new units for the existing armies. Wraithguard for Eldar, Wierd boy for Orks, Librarian for Space Marines, and Tyranids get a bunch of pants thieves.

Chaos Rising is kind of one of those “You need to have it” expansion packs, but that can be said for every Dawn of War game barring III. You don't just play Dawn of War without also getting Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soul Storm.

You're basically just paying for the single player at this point. You kind of need it to get the whole story. Chaos Rising leads straight into Retribution, which kind of brings everything together.

I still recommend it, its good fun, especially co-op.

Chaos Rising gets a light of the Emperor out of a Dirty Heretic who worships false gods.

Games Workshop was working on a Rogue Trooper board game before Rogue Trader.

You DO worship the immortal Emperor, don't you?
