So muss knackige Rundenstrategie aussehen.

I discovered Xcom 2 first. It had me hooked very quickly, and War of the Chosen only deepened the magic for me. I had to play what came before, and while I was shocked at how... little things had changed from Xcom:Enemy Unknown to Xcom2 (especially the plot sectioning lol!), but also at how much all those little things added up to a H-U-G-E difference. EU is a good game. Fun, great strategy (also slightly to significantly buggy at times like Xcom2) but boy, the refinement is definitely lacking if you have played the sequels. You can't even change the names of your saved games to keep track of which ones are which!

Some more things off the top of my head:
Grappling takes an action
The free aim system is wonky as all get out (and the fact that heavy infantry can't use missiles unless they haven't moved makes their class significantly less useful than the Xcom2 Grenadier)
Run n Gun disables use of items, making a great way to get into stun distance of aliens (I actually really liked the capture mechanic!) exceedingly more cumbersome than it needed to be
I had no idea how good the Specialist was in Xcom2... until I saw its forebearer. The support class just... it barely holds its own with the extremely niche smoke bomb and having to be so close to fellow units to heal
Speaking of heal, that and SO many other actions (like freaking RELOAD!!!) can't be used on the first action without ending your WHOLE TURN. Out of ammo but within distance of an enemy? TOO BAD, YOU WILL BE SHOT AT because re-loading takes both actions. SO glad that was changed in the sequel.
I could go on, but the bones are good. Still a fun strategy game, but not *NEARLY* as fun as the sequel. The amount of synergy among skills here just... isn't even on the same level as Xcom2 or Chimera Squad which is my favorite thing about these games

Maybe if I play enemy within some of my critiques will change, but for now, the sequel surpasses the original in all the ways that matter and I played an anachronistic relic of history rather than a classic (unfairly, I am also really upset that my sniper bugged out when I needed her most in the final battle--Xcom2 never bugged out THAT badly nor at such a critical time!).

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review

X-com: Enemy Unknown (X-com for short) is a soft reboot of the beloved X-com franchise that started back in the 90s. At its core X-com is a turn based game where you are the commander of a secret military organization which fights against the aliens that want to conquer the earth and erase humanity.

Questions you might have if you're interested in playing it:

  • What is it exactly that you do in the game? Your duty as the leader of X-com is to organize all the aspects of the human resistance, from the training of your soldiers, to allocating resources for researching new technologies and even micro-managing every single battle against the aliens. X-com is a game about making hard choices in order to win the war. Managing resources and establishing priorities is what you are going to do, 80% of the time.
  • Will it make my eyes bleed?
  • For a 2012’s game it looks fine. The textures and the character models look a bit outdated. The levels are a bit too simplistic for my taste, there are only 3 basic variations of levels: city, forest and alien tech structures, this is not necessarily bad, but it feels barebones for modern standards. Something that I really love about X-com are the amazing pre-rendered and in-game cinematics, they feel modern and they are so well directed and entertaining that this is by far the highlight of this game’s graphical aspects.
  • Does it have a good story?
  • It has a good setting, but since it’s a game about managing the war and how good or bad you do in said war, the story is simplistic. Like I said before, I love the cinematics, but they are mostly to show you world events, tutorials or outcomes of your decisions. Besides this, the story is basically non-existent.
  • Does it have a good soundtrack?
  • It’s great!. The soundtrack feels like something out of a Hollywood movie and really elevates the game. The battles feel tenser and more meaningful thanks to the awesome battle theme. The alien musical themes really make them feel like dangerous foes are a threat to the whole world.
  • Does it have replay value?
  • Yes! Due to X-com’s nature, with all its systems, dice rolls, multiple difficulty settings, the huge amount of choices that you can make and different strategies which you can and will use to beat the game; you will have plenty of stuff to unlock, explore, investigate and experiment. The first time that I beat X-com I spent 50 hours on it, after that I made a new save on hard and I got a game over 20 hours in and I loved every single bit of it.
  • Does it run well?
  • On my current rig X-com runs almost perfectly. I found a couple of game breaking bugs and I had a single hard crash. But I’m aware that in old hardware this game runs “fine” but it’s way more unstable, so be aware of that.
  • Is it fun?
  • It's so much fun. The whole strategy aspect of this game makes it so fun to play and replay.

So what is X-com: Enemy Unknown?

X-com: Enemy Unknown is a hard and unforgiving game. I think this meme summarizes the X-com experience.

X-com has 2 main gameplay loops. The Base setup and the turn-based guerrilla fights against the aliens. The base setup is where you prepare your troops for the turn based battles against your enemies. You manage your resources and decide where to invest them: on equipment or training for your soldier, on your base’s defenses, or even allied countries and other stuff that I don’t want to spoil for you. Speaking of allied countries, at the start you can choose a region as your main base, this will give you a permanent boost on a single predetermined stat. You are going to be forced to choose what regions of the world you want to invest your limited resources on defending. This decision affects how much money, materials and manpower you get from those countries. The more you ignore a country or region, the less resources you get from them.

As for the turn-based guerrilla, you start with around 4 soldiers at the start of a level and most of the time you are tasked to kill most of the enemies of the area and survive. The combat and movement allows you to make 2 moves per turn, so it is up to you to move, attack or use a special skill. As for shooting, every turn you have a set % chance to hit a target, meaning it’s basically a dice roll, which makes the game so unforgiving. Every single unit can miss or successfully hit every single shot in the whole match, I had even failed shots with a 95% success rate 4 times in a row and it was so rough. This is the part of the game that will make or break the game for you, if you like pen & paper RPG inspired games you will know how brutal RNGsus can be.

One more thing, 2k closed the servers for this game earlier this year. So if you are interested on buying this game for the PvP scene, don’t bother.

Things that I like about this game:

  • The optimization is great.
  • The combat is fun and engaging.
  • I love how this game feels like a good B-movie.
  • The pool of enemies is diverse enough for you to not get bored of the game.
  • The customization of your soldiers’ stats and skills is deep and interesting.
  • It’s mostly a challenging but fair experience… mostly…

Things that I dislike about this game:

  • It has some severe bugs and exploits; the game hard crashed once on me.

Is this game worth my hard earned money?

If you love turn-based games and you crave for a challenge with lots of hard choices and customization options for your soldiers and base; this is the game for you. X-com is not as good as sequel but if you want something more simple and less stressful, this is an easy recommendation.

Rating: 9/10

It's Lancer but without the mechs. Everyone already knows that Lancer is a good game so instead of wasting your time going into that here's all the janky bits that I am not a huge fan of

- There is no asymmetric vision. If you spot enemies, they spot you and vice versa
- The camera controls are meh. I just want to be able to lock the camera at a certain angle but the game won't give me that.
- The economy is dumb. the worse you play (and slower you progress the main story), the stronger your soldiers end up. Research is bottlenecked by items never research time. If you have normal human levels of skill you will end up progressing the main story way too quickly and be vastly underequipped for enemies.
- The game discourages you from playing intelligently (IE using ordinance and baiting enemies). Instead it pushes you into a playstyle where you rely heavily on luck because that's the only way to recover the aliens' corpses/hostages.

This game is a good remake of the original from 30 years ago, however it lacks many things the original had. I miss assaulting an alien ship with multiple decks. Boarding an alien vessel via the ground level entrance and then using the gravity lift to traverse said ship was exciting to say the least. Using the unconventional tactic breaching my way into a ship, via the blaster launcher and flight suits (to avoid Chryssalids) was fun to say the least. Boarding an alien ship always had the foreboding fear of instant death for my soldiers; as turning a corner and coming face to face with a Chryssalid was enough to make a full grown man cry. Death was mostly inevitable at this point for the unlucky bastard who had such an encounter. I also miss the different forms of fire (snap, auto and aimed) a soldier could take to gun down extraterrestrial enemies. I long for the major details of arming and making sure I took enough ammo and grenades for my troops before they entered battle. These omitted concepts made the original that much more interesting and I wish this game had that functionality. If Firaxis had taken the original and updated it to better graphics without changing anything else, that in and of itself would have been the best avenue in reselling this old title…imho.

The game is great, however leaving negative review here just for the EULA and their data collection policy (especially the part about moving your data to countries with less strict privacy laws with no way to opt out).
Of course it's still possible that it's just their default EULA and the game has no data collection but the user still shouldn't be required to agree to such terms.
This combined with their very authoritarian forum rules do not fill me with joy and loyalty to defend the product.

Excellent strategy game! My husband and I played Xcom 2 on PS4 first, and then snagged the Xcom bundle on Steam during the Lunar 2022 sale. First day I downloaded it (installed around 5pm) I logged 4.3 hours. Easy to learn, and a fantastic choice if you like turn based strategy.

The RNG can be a little aggravating sometimes, but when you consider how lucky the RNG can be as well, it balances out. (i.e., critting on an 18% to hit but then missing a 70% chance to hit)

16 hours in the game and I lost my saves and can't save anymore. The bug seems to be fixable by some manipulations with a save directory, but seriously?.. Do I have to do that? The game's, like, 10 years old and it's popular, and the issue is pretty common, as I understand, so how tf it's not fixed yet?

The game itself is fine though, it has enjoyable core mechanics. But it is also clunky and I'd been constantly irritated by an interface and controls. It was frustrating at times. And now and the bug... I'm just not willing to deal with it.

Amazing game and probably one of the best strategy games out there right now. Base management is fun and you actually feel the impact of the decisions you make during progression (what items you research/make etc). It feels satisfying af to watch your soldiers grow from useless grunts to supersoldiers throughout the course of the game. The soundtrack is also quite good and makes the battles even more engaging and fun. 10/10 must play

One of the best tactical turn-based strategy games on Steam.

After playing some of the older XCOM titles like Terror From The Deep and then playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown in the past year I see why this series has had such longevity and why it continues to be one of the premier turn-based strategy games on any platform.

Between the customization of your base and characters or the flexibility in strategy you can bring to any mission, you can sink so many hours into this game without even realizing it and that is how you know you are playing something special. As someone late to the series as a whole I am excited for XCOM 2 and hopefully more entries into the series!

Buy this game but beware it will whip you into a homicidal frenzy when you lose all your best soldiers in a single mission because one of them missed a shot with a 99% success chance. (True story happened to me once) It got me so ticked off because I hadn't saved in a while and I would have had to back super far in the story, I got so mad and started yelling f bombs at my monitor and even slammed the table, This was at 10 pm and my parents were understandably pissed. but it's a really fun game but just as I experienced with the second game, YOU WILL RAGE once in a while. There will also be a tremendous amount of save game editing, Also save after LITERALLY EVERY MISSION and before a mission. If you're playing Iron Man mode then may god help you.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a reboot of the XCOM serie released in the 90’s. Enemy unknown feels more simple in terms of tactics compared to XCOM UFO Defence, But none less the game is amazing and restarted an incredible Franchise that was before this game, lost in time. You can find Here our full review for the XCOM Franchise.

XCOM, I played this game back in 1996 and I absolutely loved it!
When they announced a remake I was giddy with excitement.
I feel satisfied that this game ticks all my boxes for a remake that i've been waiting for.

There are things about it I don't like, while other things like micro-management have been rightfully streamlined.
Things like searching the battlefield for the last alien, where they always hid themselves behind shelves, walls or were in the very corner square. Sometimes they surprised you and it gave you that 'jump scare' feeling that you let your guard down and an alien would jump out of hiding and shoot your man dead; but this never happened allot, mostly was just a bug hunt, so i'm glad that this isn't in the remake.
No Base Defence until Enemy Within came out and it was only a one off, where as in the original Enemy Unknown, you got too good at beating the aliens? They would attack/destroy your bases to kick you into touch. You only get one base in this one which is a shame.

There is no Marketplace where you buy weapons, ammo, soldiers, scientists etc. Instead you receive your Scientists by fulfilling requests from countries or being rewarded with them at the end of the month.
You have a Grey Market to sell your captured Alien Artefacts to make money to keep building your base, troop numbers, fighters and projects etc.

You get special Council missions that involve escort missions, bomb disposal, my favourite is the Chryssalid Infestation of Newfoundland Mission, there is also the Project Progeny and Operation Slingshot (DLC) missions that give you side-story missions, Intros and unique characters to join your squad.

Modding has kept this game alive for me, Long War with Rebalance to add some new features and make the game last longer as the vanilla game can be short.
The Ending left me scratching my Head, but Xcom 2 sheds more light on the Aliens agenda with Earth and it's inhabitants.
Highly recommend if you're new to XCOM, but if you're a veteran of the genre like myself, you will feel that it's incomplete, but you can live with the design choices of Jake Solomon, it's still entertaining, over 2000 hours played.

X-COM: Enemy Unknown / Enemy Within is a timeless classic. Perfect, in nearly every single way. Just the right mix of depth and approachable, EW is a tactical game that makes you feel smart and powerless at the same time.

You will cringe as you watch your soldiers mess up a shot they had a 95% chance to make. You will scream as an alien critically explodes your veteran with just a 5% chance. You will smile as your tactical planning and maneouvers splatter a sectoid squad. You will sigh with relief when the mission is over. Then you'll press the lever and do it, again and again and again and again.

There are areas where the game could have stood to have more -- more character customization, more resolution, more shaders. But what is there is enough to have destroyed hundreds of hours of my life. I love it. I think about this game even when not playing it. I've purchased entire devices dedicated to this.

This game has a sequel that builds on it. But this game is where it began again. It's a good-ass game, which I recommend buying at any price.

While it is certainly watered down compared to the first 3 games in the series, however it successfully manages to capture their charm and essence. I also really appreciate the more streamlined approach to the XCOM gameplay, while not losing too much depth.
Definitely a great entry to this interesting and unique series and to the end turn based tactics genre.

The king of turn-based tactics games. There is a reason why Xcom is constantly being compared to when discussing TBT games.

Gameplay is solid. It's deep without being needlessly complex.
There are many maps (which are also well designed) to give enough variance.
The third-person camera view which the game switches to when targeting enemies, along with the cinematic clip when your soldier fires at and kills an enemy, places you in the heart of the action which you don't often get in games of the genre.

It may not be a new game, but the big budget really shows. Graphics hold up well. Performance is good. Sountrack is great. Atmostphere can get tense. And the gameplay is simply one of the best.

My biggest criticism would be that he choices made (or not made) in base management can ruin a newcomer's playthrough if they go in blind. I recommend newcomers look up tips and guides.

Not sure where to start - this is one of the genre-creating games.

Two moves per character. You either run or shoot.

Aliens are scary and you get to learn them step by step. Sometimes via an autopsy.

Tactics is fun and unforgiving. Go a bit too hasty and you are toast.

The strategy in the homebase is a bit confusing at first. But it all levels out after a few deployments.

The game is smart. It is an exercise for a brain.

By far recommended.

While not perfect, and not as in depth as the original games its based off, this game is very good. If you like turn based strategy, you'll like this.

The following is a guide on how to have the ultimate XCOM experience:

After fully completing a campaign playthrough (ideally with the Enemy Within DLC installed), and getting familiar with how everything works, I highly recommend downloading the Long War mod, which adds a lot of flavour, and a lot of challenge. Play the game on Normal difficulty (there is no 'Easy' in the mod), with 'Ironman' mode turned on, which uses a rolling autosave instead of letting you save and reload after you make a mistake etc. In the 'Second Wave' difficulty options, enable 'Wear and Tear' (chance of gear becoming damaged even if the soldier wasn't), and 'Total Loss' (chance of gear being totally lost if the soldier using it is killed).

This is the purest way to play this game (apart from raising the difficulty to Classic, but don't do that on your first mod playthrough, you lunatic). The game adopts a level of challenge that you might expect from an alien invasion of Earth.

People will die. Sometimes, your very best and favourite troopers will die. Sometimes a mission will go real bad and all your guys get killed. Countries will become overwhelmed by the invasion and will drop their funding to you. Your interceptors can only shoot down so many UFO's - many will get through and cause havoc. You can't intercept some at all because all your planes are down for repairs, and many UFO's are just too powerful for you to take on early on. Sometimes you can't even respond to a ground mission request, and have to ignore it and leave them to fend for themselves, because too many of your good guys have been wounded and haven't recovered yet - sending only rookies on a hard mission is often suicidal.

This will elevate your experience enormously. You will achieve victory despite countless setbacks and losses, despite a memorial wall covered in names, and despite the world burning all around you. Grizzled veterans will emerge from your ranks who will carry the day, but even they may die. In your most hopeless moments, legends will be born who will win the day.

If the campaign starts going real bad, and you start losing badly and things start going off the rails, do not abandon your playthrough and start again. Go down in flames, right to the very end. There is always a chance you'll bring it back by the skin of your teeth, and when you do it feels incredible. If you don't, and the aliens win, you will learn a lot and will fare far better in your next playthrough than if you started again the instant things started to go wrong.

Allow yourself to make mistakes. Allow yourself to lose. Enable Ironman and do not reload an earlier save when things go wrong - you can complete the whole game without taking any casualties this way, which is gamebreaking, and doesn't make sense at the end of the day. If a spacefaring alien race launched a full fledged invasion of Earth, people are gonna die.

To give you a rough idea, In my current playthrough I'm about half a year in in-game time. Things are relatively good, I'm making steady progress. Shot down a lot of UFO's, managed to not lose any interceptors, completed a lot of missions, got 67 total ranks. Memorial has 34 names on it. 3 missions so far have been a total loss, where the whole squad got wiped out. 2 countries have been overwhelmed and have dropped funding.

My previous mission was completed only through exceptionally liberal application of high explosives, which resulted in quite a bit of collateral damage. Good thing the aliens killed all the locals - now theres no one to sue me.

TLDR: 9/10

I love macaroni and cheese. However, I have a limit. After maybe two plates of macaroni and cheese, I cannot eat any more macaroni and cheese. XCOM: Enemy Unkown serves me delicious macaroni and cheese, and then expects to me to eat thirty plates of it. I like the turn based strategy gameplay, I love leveling up my troops and upgrading their gear, I love building my base. I just do not love it enough to sink all the hours and hours into the game that XCOM expects me to in order to beat it. No matter how many different types of aliens there are and ship layouts and mission types, long before the game is over you will have seen them dozens of times over and over and still not have beaten the game. And despite multiple attempts, I still haven't either.

I know its a bit old school but its pretty cool blasting creepy aliens and stuff. At times I think its not allowing for
enough progress in the tech development and research to catch up with the invasion plans, so you're left scrambling hoping for a direct hit to save the life of your comrades in arms. Intense and immersive, but I wish there was kind of a short cut to the real glory of KICKING ALIEN ASS!!!!!! It starts a bit slow but cool nonetheless. 8 of 10!

Truely an amazing game - this was the game that really got me into turn-based strategy, and for many years it was my 1# most played game. I've run through the game time and time again, upping the difficulty and finding new ways to build my squad up - the amount of replayability is insane. I've thoroughly enjoyed the game, and absolutely recommend it. That being said, the DLC is really nothing special. It adds a few new missions, a new meld system, but not much else - I really could have gone without it and been fine. Still, the gameplay is solid and the story is fun, so what's not to like. Except for RNG. All my homies hate XCOM's RNG.

Great game, it's XCOM after all....

Just to say something about the EULA and those worried about privacy, it is intrusive, data harvesting such as this should not be allowed, that said, the way to stop the game launcher from phoning home is by installing software that gives you control over your firewall such as 'Windows 10 Firewall Control' (there are others out there, free and otherwise), they may not be the complete solution but they do give an extra layer of security if your worried about such things.

Anyway, great game, very enjoyable. (would again reinstall and sell my soul to the Take 2 EULA)

I recommend this to people who like turn based tactics, are ok with RNG to hit, can appreciate older games despite their flaws, and are willing to sell their gaming soul to Take 2's EULA. This is a revamp of the original XCOM game with mechanical differences, but also brings unique squad, base, and UFO defense management.
Because of its bugs, I wasnt compelled to play through it more than once.
So here is what you need to know after a few dozen hours to beat Enemy Unknown:
+ Great audio and decent graphics for its time, although...
- Cinematics sucks with variable refresh rate. Must enable V Sync to get consistent FPS with cinematics.
+ A solid amount of tactical choices to make from abilities upon soldier promotion, to various non-attack effects.
+ Cover system is somewhat more versatile than its weaknesses. Ample cover choices & variety in levels and lots of cover is destructible.
- What sucks is that most ramps/stairs beneath landings cannot provide cover from the upper landing, and once in a great while you or enemy can get cover at angles you would not expect. Speaking of cover...
- Aiming for hit chance is Line of Sight or hitbox gore all day. There can be 1-2 objects, walls, or characters between a shooter and an enemy, but shooter still has a chance to hit or kill the enemy. Very rarely if ever does a LOS gore hit on a target result in cover destruction, which would make tons more sense, but might be unfair as it decreases amount of cover available.
? LOS and fog of war cannot be easily predicted for any possible location you could move. I'm okay with that to keep the game challenging. Just know that LOS basically considers whether the target is visible if they were peeking around a corner. The bigger the cover (like full cover vs partial), the less LOS there is, if any.
? Strategy in squad movement and sequencing is imperative, and if you dont adjust to mechanics like enemies hiding for cover as soon as you see them, then you're gonna a bad time.
? RNG is fair whether its for you or the enemy. Change the game's difficulty if you have difficulty with RNG.
- When there are more than two levels to view, the ability to select a place to move to gets buggy. As a workaround, rotate the camera and/or use mouse scrollwheel to move up/down the camera level.
+ Prioritize building satellites to earn more money each month. The panic & satellite systems are reasonable and semi realistic, along with decent research opportunities with various importances & benefits.
+Things to research for squads, base building, and UFO defense are a nice touch. UFO defense is somewhat simple once an alien ship is researched.
? Pre mission squad management is alright. It can be a pain managing equipment one by one if you have limited equipment inventory to share among officers. Ability to remove all squad equip would be wonderful, but that seems to only be done for soldiers who are wounded.
+ Psionic abilities become more useful or important in the late game, so boost Will on promotion early so soliders will have higher will to resist enemy psyonic attacks and are more likely to discover their initial ability to succeed with Psi-labs.
+ Bring your best and go all in when reaching the last battle. You will be warned before you start it.
? After playing through singleplayer, several gameplay modifiers beyond ironman mode become available for replaying it.

Since When Did I Like Tactical Games??

Sure, I played Advanced Wars back in high school, and I tolerate combat in Dungeons & Dragons, but I never really considered myself a person who enjoyed tactical games. But I was feeling pretty jealous watching my partner have a blast with Fire Emblem: Three Houses, so I decided to dust off my Steam library to see if I could find anything comparable

What I found immediately captured my thoughts and attention. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a stylish, snappy tactics game that's a far-cry from the pixels or pen & paper I was used to. The presentation of XCOM makes it a real joy to watch, with a dynamic camera that follows your characters and slick 3D graphics (well, slick for 2012, which I'm chill with on my dinosaur of a laptop).

The story hits just right as well, as it revels in cheesy sci-fi tropes, but plays them so wonderfully that you can't help but be absorbed in the world. Every research item, weapon, facility, and alien has little bits of flavor text that really flesh out the world, and make you feel like you're running and important but distrusted project, one bad mistake away from losing funding and shutting down for good

The mix of facility management and time management as it relates to the in-the-field gameplay is wonderful. Both halves of the game influence eachother, and I always felt excited to move from one stage to the other. The gameplay loop of bringing loot back from the field to experiment with, and then bringing new developments out into the field to try out hits my reptile brain just right. Just as well, the combat itself is gripping, with many of the early and middle game fights leaving me on the edge of my seat; I practically had to lie down after some operations just to collect myself.

(Granted, I'm a weenie)

All this said, obviously the game is not without fault, the flow of combat has some very frustrating aspects, like aggro'ing enemies at the end of a turn, missing a shot with a high hit-rate, and the lack of clarity on what *exactly* constitutes line of sight. Put simply, the game is jank. You will run into several situations where a plan doesn't work out simply because you misunderstood the precise operation of game mechanics. In instances like this, I fully support save scumming, and liberally making new save files throughout gameplay saved me from what I felt was unecessary heartache. Of course, any genuine tactical errors I made stayed in the game, RIP to my mismanaged soldiers.

Overall XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a fantastic game with a lot to enjoy if you like tactics games, management, fussing with fiddly little details, or putting your friends into video games to watch them die. While this game has an enormous capacity for *janky bullshit*, you can scale its effects with save scumming and difficulty adjustment, depending on your personal tolerance for such things.

Oh, but I think XCOM 2 is basically better in every way? Lmao what are you doing? Go play that one, it's 2020 my dude, save yourself 30 hours

Now I see why almost every other turn-based game is compared to XCOM series. So I decided to start the XCOM series with XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It is my first XCOM experience so I played it on normal and the game was challenging enough for me. It has got a little bit of RPG elements thrown in. There is leveling system in terms of promotion. Whenever your team successfully returns from a mission, you can promote a soldier who's managed to score a kill. So level up is based on how many kills a certain soldier did. Oh and you can change his name, appearance, etc. The combat is classical turn-based and can be really fun. There are different classes available to hire, like assault, support, heavy and sniper. So each has it's own strengths and weaknesses, so there's a lot of variety. If RNG doesn't spoil your gameplay experience this game can be tons of fun. And there's base building, which was fine I guess. Those who like to micro-manage stuff will like it. Well there's not much else to say, since most of the players here already know the series. If you like it, grab it while it's on sale, it's worth it.

Before playing Gears Tactics, I thought I would go back and play the game that reinvigorated the turn based tactics games like Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.

I'm almost ashamed that it took me so long to get around to this. Welp, error has been rectified. Onward to XCOM2!

Having started on the original Xcom TFTD, beck to Xcom and fiddling with many others, I enjoyed the reboot with Aftermath, but this latest reboot just seems easy and smooth! Takes a while to get used to the 'easy feel' but most functionality is still there! Recommended for old fans and new!

Great game overall, although I played with the Enemy Within DLC so I can't speak for the base game.
8/10, it was very hooking and entertaining, I enjoyed it a lot, but I don't think I'll give it a replay any time soon. Also I'm not very fond of sci-fi and alien-themed stories at all, but this one was worth to be in between the few exceptions.

-Graphics look good enough, better than I initially thought they would.
-The vast possible customizations for each soldier are a great touch, although they are a bit simple on this one, but I heard they get better at the second game. Still, very decent.
-The story is simple but keeps you hooked. Basically Mass Effect, but you actually command the squad and the main base, and there is no AI bullshit on this one. (I'm not kidding, they even have low-end Cerberus. EXALT or something like that).
-The % possibility of aim is absolute bullcrap, and you'll be cursing it throughout the entire game. Although I heard some mods fix it, and the game also adds some options to add and take out some features after you completed the game once. Still, I play almost every one of my games on full vanilla, and 35 out of my 40 hours of gameplay I spent cursing the aiming system.

Some people love it enough to play it several times, and I can definitely see why, but I'm more excited to start playing the second one. I still enjoyed this one a lot, but I feel like I rushed it a bit in comparison to other people, got more or less half of the achievements, and although I really enjoy completing games, I don't really feel like getting the rest for this one.

This game for me is a game I can come back to again and again. It is a lovely puzzle without time constraints and it delivers the feelings of triumph and loss time and time again. I don't find it lacking in any way but would only hope for generated scenario maps and a little more forgiving on money and scenario's. Those two additions would make it a game I could play forever, hard or creative and never be bored.

One of my best strategy games ever played, great replayablity with long war mod.
Its also very fun to name your soldiers after all your people you know.
You get suprisingly very close with every soldier you lose...
After every loss, you hate the aliens more!

Great game especially with the long war mod.

With the mod single campaigns could usually take about 120-160 hours on hardest difficulty if you're fairly quick.

The game is just fun the whole way through, always challenging. Once you get the hang of it it's fun to improve and see how you are able to handle situations you wouldn't have been able to previously.

Note: I played this game + its expansion mainly on PS3 and only just got it on PC, so I have played many many more hours than what is displayed here.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is flawed but overall it does a very good job of being hospitable to new players. It is a game I would recommend to people easily due to this and the fact it's pretty cheap on Steam now.

XCOM: Enemy Within is a good expansion on the base game that does a lot of cool stuff, but don't use it in your first playthrough unless you have someone advising you because it adds more complexity to the game that will make newcomers get lost more easily.

Once you've at the very least beaten XCOM:EU, but possibly also beaten XCOM:EW, only then would I recommend moving onto XCOM 2 because XCOM 2 is very much taking this game and then ramping them up to 11 in ways that will be very frustrating if you aren't already familiar with what it's expanding upon.

A friend introduced me to this game this game and I really sucked at it. I was so bad at it that I decided not to buy it but a close buddy of mine gifted me this game and I started to love playing it after seeing the XCOM campaigns of Beaglerush in YouTube. I so enjoyed this and the Long War 1.0 mod that I've sunk in 1846 hours of play time into this game. This was my first turn-based strategy game by the way and playing it really hooked me into the genre.

There are several XCom games on the market and in my opinion Enemy Unknown is the best.

All the others are fine games but I like the concept of Enemy Unknown the best.

XCom 2 runs it a good second but on my W10 and XP Operating Systems it tends to keep crashing, especially on the rescue civilians missions.

It also takes an age to fly to and return from missions, sometime several minutes, whereas Enemy Unknown gets to and from their missions in seconds.

The game play takes a little getting used to but once mastered is very easy.

I certainly recommend XCom Enemy Unknown

What is XCOM: Enemy Unknown ?

I havent played much but god what a game, I want to make this review as brief as possible since I didnt finish the game I cant comment much about this game's characteristics so this is more of a first impressions overview, starting with the game's visuals and presentation, I really like its style and it shines a persona of its own but man the gameplay is addictive, its the type of game you think youre going to play for a few minutes and then when you check the clock an hour or two has passed, its the time of game that you get lost in like it compleletely draws you in, there are also many nuances to its gameplay mechanics and some level of complexity that makes it such a big and intriguing game to play, I truly fell in love with it as the moment I didnt finish it yet and plan to postpone my playthrough to an further date due to personal reasons, I can safely say here that this is a phenomenal game and I cant wait to get back into it in the future and finish it completely, its a great game especially for fans of tactical strategy games, a genre Im not really into but still XCOM surprised me in a lot of ways to make me think that it truly deserves a recommendation.

Well, I cant believe I forgot to review this one after finishing it.

This is a great strategy game and I usually hate strategy games as I am not really good at them. It has a style of its own where each troop has its own action timer to make their move and get closer or further from enemies to better position themselves for attacking.

The troops can be personalized and after a few missions you will grow attached to a few of them, then watch them get blown to pieces making you reload your save to save them. I played this one saving quite a lot...

One of the main things everyone mentions about the game is how hard/frustrating it can be because the calculations for a success hit are not really accurate and you can end up missing a vital hit that you needed that had 95% chance of hitting... but its also part of what makes the game fun and unpredictable.

I completed the whole campaign on regular difficulty then again on classic difficulty, and that was challenge enough, normal mode was fun and let me learn the game, classic had the right amount of difficulty and frustration (with quite a few rage moments) but there is also ironman mode (no saves, just seems impossible for me) and even a higher impossible difficulty. Be sure to select one that matches your appetite for difficulty because higher difficulties can get incredibly frustrating and unfair if you are not super careful and strategic with your approach... and even so you can get really unlucky and end up getting whipped by RNGesus.

an excellent turn based tactical game, with base building, and research mechanics. While not quite up to par with the original, it is a worthy successor to it. The updated graphics, and mission immersion, make each encounter nail biting, until your squad levels up, and gets better gear. And even then, it can still go sideways, if you let your guard down, or the aliens do something unexpected.

Shoot down UFO's. Go to the crash site to kill/capture aliens during turn-based ground battles and collect alien technology. The aliens can put up a fight, solid AI. A Country could decide to cut funding to the XCOM project if you neglect protecting them from UFO attacks. Reverse engineer UFO technology from crash sites to upgrade your soldier's equipment and airplanes. Upgrade aircraft to shoot at larger UFO's and collect better tech.

Soldiers can earn experience and learn new skills which let them stand a better chance against tougher aliens. There is also some base management. Decide what part of the funding has to go to research, building new facilities, weapon production, new aircraft etc. Use the Long War mod for Enemy Within for better balance and make sure you buy the bundle. Good game.

A strategy layered game with a boots on the ground approach and an overworld management of resources and pursuits to bolt, XCOM Enemy Unknown and Within stand to be one of the better games even in this day and age. Every action leaves players in suspense on what lies around the corner and every mistake a costly price. Empty Salt shakers are recommended for those who spew and froth and need containment units to hold it.

I haven't finished the game, and am writing the review based off of what I've seen/experienced thus far. Also keep in mind that this is coming from a plebian whose only experience with turn-based strategies are SM's Civilization, Fire Emblem, and games with attack-based battles, such as Pokemon and Persona.

This game is everything I've been yearning for from within my heart. Multiple difficulties to allow you to find the perfect balance of luck and strategy. I love nothing more than to be punished for my own stupidity. Good old Operation Crimson Daze, where I thought I'd use the medium class UFO crash as an opportunity to train 3 new squaddies alongside my most experienced soldier, my dedicated medic, as well as Giorno Giovanna, a man with a 4 missions to 1 kill ratio. Missions/combat are exhilarating. I'd often find myself clenching my fists in addition to my ass with each new encounter, praying to a god that Giovanna, my beautiful, beautiful, useless fucking sniper clad in pink armor, could hit something for once. Needless to say, he didn't. Everyone except William Williams, the medic, was either dead or down within two turns, at the hand of that godforsaken weird flying disc alien. One dash away from the extraction zone, it is with regret that I say, Cpl. Williams took some plasma to the knee, and died, thus marking the first time I had failed so miserably as a human being with a functioning brain.

Story is linear, but not necessarily bad. I usually skip cutscenes after 5 seconds because I can guess what they're talking about. Base management, panic management, and fund management are all great features to the game, allowing you the freedom to make choices outside of battle that have consequences.

tldr: great combat, good out-of-combat management stuff, ok story.

8/10

This is a truly epic remake of an old school classic. Xcom for the modern generation. Turn based, hardcore and frustrating in all the right ways.

This game cost me several points off my GPA and ruined at least two relationships. The thousand hours I've sunk into it on steam are likely exceeded from the time I've spent on it on my toilet with my smart phone. What can't I say about it? The sleek, refined approach to turn based strategy and inverted difficulty make for a challenging experience right off the hop, but it's the relationship you build with your meaty alien bashing supermen and the stories they develop as you play that really make this game a timeless gem. Yes, I played the original, and yes, that formula was certianly invented there, but nothing quite beats having our support gunner struck down by a grenade only to say 'screw it, he's too fargone' and then hack off his limbs to stick him inside a bloodthirsting mec suit to go back to the fight. Easily one of my GOAT games, likely somewhere near number one. Back when forums were popping, multiplayer was second to none also, but GL finding folks online these days.

Quite the game, doing research, acquiring funds & knocking off bad guys.
Very involved game, has more twists & turns than an earworm.
I've won this game more than once yet still play!
10 out of 10 stars!
