Positiv:

Keine Updates trotz Verbesserungsbedarfs.

This game is so broken it should not be sold any longer.

Bohemia loves to make maps and such, but is less interesting in programming good AI to traverse them. So many instances of this in all their games.

Confusing mission objectives. AI is bad. You spend more time getting AI-controlled vehicles unstuck than you spend progressing the mission.
Slow progress and you better save often, since the AI usually send your units right into enemy fire or the opposite direction and get stuck!

Quite terrible game with interesting ideas which go nowhere

Game is very tedious. Capturing islands take ages and there are many islands. Production also is tied to an external ship which needs to be transported in real time to the frontlines. This game tries to be an RTS/FPS/RPG hybrid and does everything poorly.

Its campaign is absolutely atrocious. Cringe voice acting, plot. Massively long cringy CGI cinematic which changes tone every scene and does absolutely nothing to introduce us into game. Also it is the main cinematic which launches when you launch the game. Just why? Campaign itself is bugged. Some tasks are impossible to complete like activating command center when it self destructs, but game just allows you to progress further. Others are so obtuse that I wonder if they can be completed at all. I need to locate firewalls to lower a gate. I go where it is indicated and nothing happens. I go around the base and I'm not sure if objective is updated or not. I get grenade launcher, vehicle doesn't show up on a map nor in my production screen.

Game balance is also atrocious. Defensive turrets do not work most of the time. AA turrets are blind as bat until they start firing and shred your Mantis to pieces in seconds.

AI is useless. It spends most of the time stuck and trying to find a path. Enemy AI is unresponsive and can do little more than to just shoot back slightly moving around. Forget about any challenge when facing computer opponent.

In Conclusion

What is left afterwards is just very tedious and boring game. It has great ideas, but entire gameplay needs to be reworked from grounds up. Campaign also needs to stop pretending that it is some high budget FPS. Instead of creating levels for first person shooter which was atrocious, developers could instead focused on more minimalistic game with less budget and time wasting cringe worthy assets and just focused on delivering fun primary game experience. Instead, gameplay is extremely slow and tedious with not much variety. Just put the biggest armor and most powerful anti vehicle weapons and you had found the most optimal loadout.

Buggy pathfinding, constant crashing (with a poor save system), AI that cheats and skips tech levels, terrible tacked on campaign that literally starts out as a janky fps, the ability to get stuck in the map, an AI that can take your islands without any resistance no matter how defended they are unless you rush to their aid, and many more little issues drag this game down. Never do this again Bohemia. Please.

The Good

Carrier Command Gaea Mission is a mix of RTS and first/3rd person action, which is a great combination that not many games have achieved, and something I would like to see more in games of both genres. The gameplay itself is very deep and rewarding, The 3D model of the carrier and its subsystems make sense - it is also not a micromanagement nightmare. There are a lot of optional weapons and tech systems for you to use to outfit your Mantas and your Walruses (the two vehicles you use to conquer islands).

The bad
Unmodded this game does what it sais on the tin. The only real problem is the horrific AI pathfinding which can get very frustrating while playing the campaign or even the skirmish mode as you need to micromanage their path or take control of the units before they get shot to ribbons. What makes things even more frustrating is that it is only the friendly AI pathfinding that is borked.

The Ugly

When you start the 'campaign' the first half hour of the game is a first person shooter experience. It's only the prelude which has nothing to do with the actual gameplay. The devs would have done good by just making this a complete cutscene and then set you up as the commander of the carrier. It was used as some kind of 'tutorial' but it feels like a different game. Don't let that first half hour discourage you from playing this game. It's really good.

The Beautiful.

In many cases, mod creators have the ability to make community patches and updates and even add new gameplay mechanics to games that are complete and no longer worked on by the dev team.
Species1571 who is the creator of the Deadly Islands mod, did just that. With his mod the game is complete, it adds new features like droids that you can control, new gameplay mechanics for the skirmish scenario and the list goes on. I made a camouflage scheme with different patterns depending on the season on the islands for both sides of the conflict as a cherry on the cake.

The only thing that this game really misses is Coop Multiplayer or even Versus multiplayer. Bohemia have made a couple of masterpieces, and this is one in its own right as well.

The Deadly Islands mod can be downloaded here: don't forget to create a shortcut to launch the game with the mod activated: RTFM and you'll be fine:

Unstable, buggy and outdated. While this was a moderately good title at launch, there are persistent issues that will never be addressed. With that in mind this is not a total waste of your money if your willing to look past these issues as such this should best be read as a meh review rather than a full negative.

I want to like it so much but the AI just absolutely ruins it. The pathfinding is some of the worst I have ever seen in a modern game and in a game where you are counting on your AI partners to do their job it is not acceptable. If there are any competent devs out there that could do a better job then I am absolutely in the market for a good version of this game because the concept is amazing.

This would be amazing if it had multiplayer. As far as adaptations go, this is very faithful to the (brilliant) original from DOS and Amiga days. The graphics are solid, the feeling of launching vehicles from your carrier is great. Vehicle combat is quite nice too, but obvious pathfinding issues are killing this game, at least until you install some community mods that aim to fix this.

But what really lets this down is that there's absolutely no multiplayer. This would lend itself really well to having players work in teams, but alas, no such thing here. Playing solo gets old as the AI isn't exactly a challenge, and really the only difficulty comes from the fact that ground vehicles are just too dumb to navigate the islands.

Oh and the FPS sections are just hopeless. Why this was even put in the game I will never understand, they should've spent that time on pathfinding fixes or multiplayer instead.

Stay away, especially at the price. Controlling your own carrier and commanding units is cool as hell and really well done here, but it's not worth the price of admission unfortunately. And you're not likely to come back to this game.

A game that had potential, but instead is slow and boring. Campaign sees you slowly building up your force, but that force is 4 tanks and 4 VTOLs. their loadouts are somewhat customiseable but not by much.
I do not feel like a commander making smart plays, i usually end up exploiting AI to get through missions faster :|

Now this game has it's ups and downs but overall I found myself enjoying this game.

In a way, Carrier Command is kind of like a strategic sandbox. You captain a carrier travelling island to island mounting air and amphibious assaults with four WALRUS (APC) units and four MANTA (VTOL) units to seize control. Earning new weapons and equipment to help the survivability of your units and providing stronger firepower.

The main part of the game is the Skirmish mode and this is where I believe the game stands out as a strategic sandbox. Before you even get into a campaign, you can decide if you need to focus on destroying the enemy carrier, seizing control of all 30 islands or both in order to achieve victory. Be aware though, there is another carrier roaming around with the same goal as you and the game will make you regret starting a naval confrontation with a woefully under-prepared ship.

Skirmishes will randomly position islands (yes, randomly position. the game does NOT generate new islands) while also randomly deciding how they are logistically connected and will assign ownership to you, the enemy or leave neutral depending on the handicap. Each island has their own set goal before they can be captured but it is entirely up to you. You can follow through and complete the island's objective such as disabling firewalls or jamming equipment in order to hack or you could just bomb the hell out of the island's command centre. Reducing it to ashes and replace it with one of your own. When captured and have a direct link to one of your neighbouring islands, they will form a network that will supply your war effort in different ways depending on the set island type. They can either mine resources, boost production or buff the defences of neighbouring islands.

The campaign, while mediocre at best with some bad-middling forced FPS segments and will immediately become repetitive upon completion, is a good starting point to familiarise yourself with the game before entering Skirmishes. As, (this is also why I call it repetitive) it uses a fixed island layout and as you make your way through you will be given a grace period to get the hang of things before the enemy carrier starts trying to win back islands you've taken or hunt you down.

If you are willing put up with some noticeable issues (one in particular I'll be explaining further down), this is an enjoyable romp.

DO NOTE: The AI path finding, especially from the amphibious WALRUS (APC) units, can be very dumb and irritating at times. While 70-80% of the time they can get from A to B without manual intervention. You will come across issues ranging from; hesitantly pulling constant J-turns trying to cross a bridge or avoiding another WALRUS heading in the opposite direction to, crossing said bridge but getting themselves stuck because they veered off to the side. If equipped with an arching projectile weapon, they also tend to open themselves up to enemy fire while failing to take drop off into account. Even though the enemy is right there, your WALRUS won't aim just that little bit more upward while theirs are taking pot shots.

The MANTAs (VTOL) have their own occasional issues too. Making themselves a sitting duck taking their sweet time lowering their altitude in order to fire at a ground target when their gun can't aim any lower and, usually when you recall them back to the carrier, also taking their time to slowly turn towards the direction of the carrier THEN head towards it.

These issues can be quickly, somewhat and temporarily solved by taking manual control of the affected unit. If you can assume control before they get destroyed that is.

Played the original Carrier Command on Amiga 600, deceptively hard game, despite appearances. This modern remake doesn't quite live up to the drama of the original, nor does it have the charm, but it does a fairly good job for those who never got the chance to experience the classic version. The flashy graphics and decent controls make up for a poor storyline that feels like it was thrown in just to give the game a point, because modern gamers have zero imagination and cannot accept a game on its own merits without a full explanation and backstory. In essence, its still the same game as the original, and that's what makes it worth playing.

After 8 years and apparently several attempts at patching the path finding for your units is still so god awful it makes attempting to play this game almost pointless. It's shameful that this things is still being sold on Steam, let alone for anything more than $5.
Avoid the frustration and DO NOT BUY IT.

They or somebody should do a Kickstarter and fix this game right.

Hostile Waters with better graphics, still gotta tap your ground units on occasion when they get stuck on things but worth it, fun game and resources are dealt with much smoother.

No idea wth ppl are crying about the voice acting for it wouldn't even make the top 1000 worst games out there compilation , although it wouldn't win any awards either, i bought this on heavy discount and its an absolute steal, if I'd have paid double I wouldn't have been disappointed.

What would have been an awesome game is completely ruined by a dysfunctional A.I. for friendly units. Since most of your units will be on remote most of the time, this is a critical flaw in the game design.

I may be showing my age but I played the original 8 bit version of this game on my ZX Spectrum +2 and later on the 16 bit conversion on the Atari ST. Whilst the graphics may not have been great shakes (well at least compared to now), the game was insanely addictive and it was easy to spend many an hour battling away.

Somehow this 'reimagination' seems to have lost sight of the essence of the game and completely sacrifices the game play of the original for the sake of tarting up the graphics.

I didn't even last 3 hours before giving up in disgust....a salutary lesson in how not to update a classic game...avoid!

This could be one of the greatest games of all times. Strategy combined with fps.
But the AI is ridiculous, the walrus drivers are DRUNK. They can't obey a simple command, they can't get from point A to point B fluidly, they just stumble upon each other. If they fight another walrus they suddenly feel the urge to show the enemy the back (they cant shoot from that position).
I feel like I play a Beta version.

Game crashes before even getting to gameplay with a access violation. using various compatability modes, moving to different instal drive, verifying file integrity, reinstalling, and the beta patch each did nothing to correct the issue. its unplayable.

Absolutely love the strategy mode in this game. It scratches an itch that no other title really does. Deadly Islands mod is a must, as it corrects and compensates for a number of the factory-shipped shortcomings of this under-budgeted recreation of a classic I used to play on the Atari ST / Amiga platform.

There's something very satisfying about the build-up from a ship with paltry armaments that can barely fight off a dying seagull's whisper, to finally sinking the enemy carrier with your overwhelming firepower, and capturing all the islands.

The strategy has incredible depth, and making the wrong moves can leave islands defenseless, unproductive, or just leave your carrier without any support craft. The game maintains a constant tension as you try to balance caution with haste, especially when that enemy carrier is just an island or two away from intercepting you directly, or conquering one of your critical connecting islands.

Again, if you missed it above, Deadly Islands mod.

Highly recomended, although there are some pretty annoying bugs.

If you get the game, subscribe to the beta release for the patch to reduce the frequency of them. Additionally, if you are interested in modding, mods are not handled by steam.

My understanding is that this title is otherwise abandonware, which is unfortunate because it deserves more.

I thought on sale after all these years it might be worth a try, but.. No. Don't. It was never finished.

Imagine Spintires crossed with the Stephen King/John Carpenter film 'Christine'. It's about a murderous car.

Except here, the vehicles are suicidal rather than homicidal, and you have to keep manually driving them out of ditches and mud because they will not *ever* go where you ask them to, or shoot the enemy instead of the wall near the enemy.

The game is just a long, slow exercise in frustration with the abysmally broken, lazily made AI. Bohemia released an unfinished game and none of the subsequent patches resolved the basic problem preventing it from functioning as the game it pretends to be.

Beyond that it has too many cutscenes with terrible writing and animation and the basic gameplay loop in the six or so hours I played was very, very dull.

this game is neat when it's working, however it has an issue that makes your gpu roast, have lost one gpu to this game and caught on when i realised that my replacement was only roasting on this game, don't know if they ever patched the bug but for how old this game is they should probly lower the price to 20usd or less too, you wanna keep that 33usd then start by updating the code and adding more content over time, maybe a dlc, after you fix the bugs.

Excellent games that companies neglect to make sequels of. I can't believe this was my first time playing it.

Just saying. Multiplayer would be AMAZING on this game! someone please mod it! or remaster!!!!

Otherwise, this is a great game where you get to create your own squads of vehicles and control them like drones from a command carrier.

This game has no idea what it supposed to be. A terrible first person shooter stuck into a carrier command concept. The old Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising from 2001 beats this hands down for quality.

This another clear example of Bohemia not having clue about basic game design. Simple rule have a plan and stick to it. Instead we got a basic story line and first person shooter. Forced in to a game that is basically about tank battles and RTS style map control.

The free play no story line style of play that was so supposed provide a procedural strategy campaign is in there but it was never really finished and has terrible AI.

Some broken mechanics on Steam launch that killed it. Like AI path following. Semi fixed but requires micromanagement. Forcing first person control to get around path issues. Often units used for RTS style attacks will simply get stuck.

The story is now the main focus of play and it is just bad. For a better story and carrier command RTS play. Try the following instead.

Even though its an older game it is still worth playing. Kinda a unique strategy shooter where you remotely control air and land vehicles to take objectives and obtain resources. Decent graphics too.
