Project Aftermath is a 12 year old sci-fi military RTS wset in the distant future where you control small squads of soldiers and kill your enemies with traditional real time strategy mechanics. There's a couple of gimmicks here, the game revolves mostly around controlling your hero character and your squad is less directly controlled. Also, combat revolves heavily around a rock-paper-scissors game where you have to try balance around different shield/damage types.

Despite the age of the game there's working 4K support and it plays well enough. There is a problem with DPI scaling so text is nearly unreadable, unfortunately. The biggest problem is the gameplay. The RPS thing is, well, exactly as much fun as it sounds (ie, not fun at all, it's annoying). I like that they tried to do a few new things here, even if they didn't really work. The developers have removed the game from the store, making my recommendation here a little irrelevant. Regardless, this compares poorly to better RTS games like Grey Goo, Starcraft 2, etc.

My gameplay hours is suggestive. Not great enough to keep you occupying. The first experience of the gameplay and mechanics was bad but still I tried to learn the game , failingly, it seems improbable. No proper guide provided, and the gameplay mechanics is just torture to the fingers. Still not a bad one for the price offered.

Color swapping combat at the core to this RTS despite a heavy tutorial is at best a tedious element of micro management. Unit AI is weak on both sides resulting in often comical encounters.

TLDR: Think sci fi Spellforce. Heavily scripted, hero-centric RTS with cooldown abilities, voice acted portrait banter. Bland and generic at times.

In terms of mechanics it reminded me heavily of Spellforce. Maps I have played so far were hero mission with checkpoint capture. Not sure if basebuilding is any real part of this game the way it was in Spellforce. The level of customization is also a lot weaker in Project Aftermath where you can hotswap between a few ability types through a radial menu and you can recycle killed foes as a ressource gathering mechanism to then regen troops or call down supply drops and whatnot. It is half decent. The default controls and camera behavior are all covered in the fairly well executed tutorial, however there is no way to draw a selection rectangle around multiple units to select them and you are constantly fighting with a finnicky HOLD SHIFT+CLICK PORTRAITS system that I found unwiedly. I could complain about the level of audiovisual polish but the game fullscreened at the correct resolution and was doing an honest enough job rendering the game world to my satisfaction for this genre. Not sure if the campaign story ever gets anywhere. The world setting feels rather generic still but this is a first impressions only

Project Aftermath is a sort of mash between a modern MOBA and classic RTS games such as Command & Conquer. The game requires the player to control a number of heroes who come with their own small squad of soldiers. Upon death the hero can be revived. There is a limited amount of strategic options such as changing weapon type in accordance to the enemy's defence type, what special skills the heroes can use in any given situation that may reinforce an ally's offence or provide support to a hero's team. It's also possible, and encouraged, to consider what order to carry out attacks and movement.

The menu interface in this game seems to purposefully take precedence over everything else on my system. I have a dual-monitor setup and I generally stream television shows whilst playing games. Project Aftermath is the only game so far that seems to cause the video stream to stutter and eventually stop buffering while browsing its in-game menus. everything then appears to resume working as expected during gameplay.

There are no visual settings and minimal gameplay options but there is a volume mixer. There really needs to be keybind menu as I'm finding that the camera rotation with Q and E often fails, I would prefer to rebind them to my hero's skills.

Even though Project Aftermath plays well it's a bit too bland and clunky, for a pseudo-RTS, to keep me interested.

This is a C&C game (Command and Conquer), not too polished, but it still has the charm, Definitely not worth the $10 price tag, if you want a good C&C game, get red alert 3, I did, and I found it a much more polished game, with better graphics, and better music. Only problem is that it's on origin, though I think it is also on Steam too. I got it during a humble bundle hosted by EA.
