While this game is fun it suffers a critical problem that makes it mind-bendingly awful near the tail end of its experience, which is the fact that when its two players left one of them essentially holds a lead over the other and there is very little you can do to change this. If you try to wait it out to affect it it takes obscene amounts of time if your money production is close to each other and just leads to basically sitting there staring at a number go up for over ten minutes, its awful. I figured I'd give it a try on sale but holy jeez unless you absolutely blitz the competition this game is a SLOG on the LOWER DIFFICULTIES and I cant imagine how utterly painful and not fun to play this is on the harder ones.

The most imaginative and inventive strategy game out there...
But also the hardest to work out what you have to do to even remotely be good.
One of those games you'll be googling guides and build orders for just so you can survive against default AI.
Campaign tutorial is buttonology rather than teaching strategy.

Criminally neglected. A brilliant non-military take on the RTS, preserving the time frame and tension of classics like Starcraft and AoE while dispensing with clickfest. Patents and the black market keep the game exactly fluid enough. Makes a riveting e-sport, too.

Offworld Trading Company is one of the best and most unique strategy games ever made. It differs from almost all other Strategy games in that there is no combat, instead, you play as a (mostly) legal corporation seeking riches through space colonization. The path to intergalactic riches is paved with rivals, though, and although your warfare is economic and not militaristic, it's no less cutthroat.

At its core, OTC is a game about the production and trade of various resources. Some simple resources like Iron and Carbon can be mined from the ground, while more complex resources like Steel and Electronics have to be produced using other resources. All resources can be bought and sold at any time, and every transaction affects the price of that resource. If you sell a lot of Iron, the price goes down, and if you buy a lot of Steel, the price goes up. Of course, your goal is to be selling resources that are expensive and buying resources that are cheap, but this is vastly more complex than it sounds. For starters, you can't just build as many mines and factories as you can afford. Offworld real estate is expensive, so each corporation is only allocated a certain number of land claims, each of which allows you to claim a single tile on the map. You can only get more claims by upgrading your HQ, which costs a lot of resources, so you need to choose every claim wisely to succeed. Obviously, tiles containing high quality resources that you need are great to grab, but the location of the tiles matters too. If you build multiple buildings of the same type next to each other, they work more efficiently, and if your buildings are not connected to your headquarters, you'll have to fly the resources back and forth, which is both costly and time-consuming. Due to the fluctuations of the market, a once-useful factory can quickly turn into an economic liability, and while you can choose to demolish it and build something else in its place, you can't give the claim back and move to another tile, so planning ahead is extremely important. In the long run, victory is mostly about planning ahead and being able to predict and adapt to the market.

While the core mechanics of buying and selling have no shortage of depth, there are many further wrinkles to the gameplay as well. For starters, there's 6 different factions you can play as, all of whom have their own little twists on the formula. Scientists can build factories directly on top of resources to gather and refine simultaneously, while robots gain bonuses for having production buildings adjacent to supply buildings. There's also a black market where you can spend your money to purchase various attacks and boosts, such as an EMP to freeze an opponent's buildings or a claim return ticket, which lets you refund a claim you made previously and choose a new tile. There's a lot of nuance to the black market as well, every time any particular item is bought by any player, the price goes up for all players, so sometimes it's worth buying and holding onto something just to drive the price up for your rivals (speaking of which, you can do this with resources as well, buying resources you know your rivals will need to buy and selling them after they drive the price up). On top of this, there are also special buildings like the Patent Lab that can change the rules of the game. Have a bunch of buildings that are spread out? Patent Teleportation and that no longer matters, but only so long as a rival doesn't patent it first. Or disable or steal your patent lab. Or drive the price of Chemicals up to the point where it becomes prohibitively expensive to research. Despite the simplicity of the game's core mechanics, there's an almost infinite number of variables to consider and a ton of room for creative and skillful play.

Another commendable aspect of Offworld Trading Company is that it has a massive amount of content and replay value. For starters, maps are generated randomly, with random allocations of resources and terrain features. In pretty much every other Strategy game I've played that attempts random maps, the maps generally either all feel the same or are frequently so unbalanced that they essentially hand victory to one player, but it works fantastically here, ensuring that the game feels fresh pretty much every time. Capitalizing on this, the game has a very unique campaign mode. In most strategy games, the campaign is a sequence of predetermined battles against the AI, but here it's more like a collection of randomly generated skirmish battles subject to some extra rules. In the campaign you choose to play as one of 11 different characters, each with different strengths and weaknesses. For example, Paolo Rubini starts with the Cold Fusion ability, allowing him to use Water instead of Power for his buildings, while Frank Dawson gets one free Black Market item every time he upgrades his HQ. Before each stage of the campaign, you can use your earnings from previous maps to purchase upgrades to your production buildings and other unique powers to give you the edge. Some of the characters are clearly a little better than others, but there's a ton of content and replay value here. Should you get bored of campaign mode, there's also a number of challenge maps that impose unique win conditions or restrictions upon you, as well as the Daily and Infinite Challenge modes, which task you with winning maps as quickly as possible, complete with leaderboard and replay support so you can see what strategies other players used. Of course, there's also multiplayer support, which features both ranked battles and extremely customizable lobby battles. Even after 100 hours, I've still barely scratched the surface of this game's single player content, which caused me to keep putting off writing this review.

There is basically only a single drawback to this game, which is that it has a significant learning curve. Offworld Trading Company is almost wholly unique, with no other game in any other genre playing similarly to it. While this does make it fresh and exciting even for those who have played hundreds of other strategy games, it also means that you're going to be starting from scratch in terms of skill regardless of how much experience you have. The game does provide some basic tutorials, but for the first half-dozen hours you play the game you're almost certainly going to get smoked and have little idea why. A quick tip that can help you improve faster is to learn to use the X key at almost every opportunity, which shows the profitability of your buildings. If that number is high, things are going well, but if it's low or even negative, you need to take action to restore profitability (this usually involves replacing those buildings with something that would make more money). Once you start to understand how to plan ahead and adapt your production to remain profitable throughout the game it becomes very fun, but there's no question that it's a bit of a slog at the beginning. There's also quite a lot of DLC to the game, but the complete edition goes on sale pretty often, so I wouldn't consider this to be too much of an issue.

The AI can be a right pain in the ass to beat most of the time at low to medium levels assuming your trying to beat them with minimal sabotage items.

The funny part is...the AI doesn't actually cheat beyond seeming to know the best places to setdown its HQ

There's not a huge amount of meat on the bone. Therefore you must really find what little meat there is to be tasty for this to be worth it. Obviously it's part of my palette considering how much time I spent gnawing on it. The flavor is quite unique. Sadly this also means that there are few places to go to sate my hunger. Therefore I always return to this bone which, regrettably, has been so thoroughly chewed upon, that the marrow has begun to show.

One of the best RTS games out there. Sadly RTS is associated with games like starcraft, which require APM to win. This game surprisingly involves a lot of thinking and not a lot of quick actions. It really challenges your thinking above all. If you think you are smart, try to beat the pros at the game, you will see what I am talking about + You will meet some great people, who are probably the main reason why I still play the game from time to time. Would have loved if the competitive scene was more active.

Picked up the core edition for $15 on steam sale.

If you are looking for an RTS that focuses on economics, rather than military conflict, this game is worth checking out.

I do wonder if it will get a bit stale with more plays. However, at 12 hours in, I am still enjoying this. So far I've only played Skirmish vs. the AI.

What I think I am enjoying the most is that the rules of the game are fairly straightforward. However, there is a lot of strategic depth due to the randomized map and black market configuration each game. The factions are asymmetric, but no so much so that it become burdensome to remember how each faction plays.

1. Notices low supplies of aluminum on the map that is all clustered together
2. Frantically rush to claim as much as possible
3. Sabotage all enemy aluminum mines
4. Hoard all of your aluminum
5. Jack the prices of aluminum with hacking
6. Build electronics factories because you cant make electronics without aluminum
7. Panic because the AI is about to buy you out
8. Sell all of your aluminum and crash the market from over 500$ per aluminum, too only 1$ per aluminum
9. Aluminum is now worthless
9 Get bought out

I heavily dislike the claim system this game has, which limits your expansion to a fixed number of tiles and always creates boring stalemates during which there is no longer anything to do, except wait and scrounge what little you can by selling and/or buying the smallest amount of ressources while your debt accrues.

All in all this is a solid strategy and management sim with sensible dynamic economics, diverse factions, good humor, and a solid DLC library. The interactions with competing corporations is really what make this title shine. Relative to other games in the genre, it stands out in that you can't simply employ the exact same strategy over and over to win.

Great game, I played some of the expansions too. The best tricks I learned was if you don't want to get your resource nuked build a regular building on it and then have slant drilling to access it (hopefully from multiple sides). When an item is cheap buy it even if you do not need it right then. (especially for an oncoming upgrade) To maximize a resource you control get the hacker array to drive prices up. I beat guru using the elite HQ and 3 enemy AIs. The best seed to beat on GURU level is 1234503. This map allows you to almost control all of the water right at the start. The rest of it is far away and can be nuked to reduce the amount they can get. Buy all the extra land when possible. The elite base allows you to advance your efficiency (fast, elite ability) so you can compete with the unfair AIs and allows you to get land for free. I stay at level 2 for most of the game so I do not have to eat up resources. I also crashed prices of items the AI was making too much money on. ( of course at the same time I was driving up my water price (elite ability)).

I appreciate the economic depth but the AI cheats in every way possible. Claim every single tile of a resource on the map to squeeze the market? Doesn't matter. Put everything you have into rushing your HQ level to 5? AI will not only be at level 5 before you but will also have every production up and running. Only one enemy AI left in the game? Get EMP'ed in quick succession even though the cooldown time for EMP is 60 seconds. AI sells one of your stocks and you want to buy it? Nope, another AI bought it without you ever seeing the buy button turn white. While I understand the AI MIGHT be following the rules of the game, it is absurd. I shouldn't have to spend 4 hours paused just to min max every little thing on EASY DIFFICULTY.

This games design is like Monopoly. You loose in the beginning of the game and it takes forever to find out. There is no coming back from a disadvantage. Being in the lead will give you a wider lead and the tools you have to slow down the AI keep getting more and more expensive. Not to mention the game makes you search for resources to find a place to start while the AI is already setting up shop.

Although this economic simulator (not to be confused with a city builder) isn't bad, I simply can not agree with the DLC policy.

The base content is very limited in scope, and players must go though paywall after paywall (or pay for the full DLC pack upfront) to have a game with reasonable content breadth.

If you could exhume Karl Marx's body, send him to Mars, hook him to a generator, and show him this game, I posit the power generated from the rotational spin of his corpse could be sufficient to finally terraform that cold, dead rock.

This is a fun, high-paced game based on market economics and sabotage. It's easy to pick up, difficult to master, and better with friends. Like real economics, I guess.

It's a cute little game that ends up being a lot shorter (30 minutes) and simpler than I would have expected given the hype of a Civilization designer being involved. There's a set number of resources that you either mine or produce using combinations of other resources. You can buy needed resources, driving up prices, or sell off excess, driving down prices. You have a very limited number of tiles to work with, which can be increased by spending resources to upgrade your base. Excess money goes toward buying out other companies or smaller special effects until one company is left.

The tutorials are very well done, as are the challenges of increasing difficulty. Your level of competitiveness will determine how many times you want to repeat the process, I suppose. On deep sale and holding back on the excess DLC to start, it's worth a go.

I like the premise of the game, which harks back to the predatory capitalistic tactics of the Gilded Age; the cutthroat sabotages and downright amorality of the characters makes you feel like the JP Morgan of Mars. However, I would have preferred a game mode where things are a little bit slower, allowing you to build and acquire goods. As it is, for an average schmuck, you can hope to play 10 minutes before being bought out by an AI competitor.

When you compare a game to Capitalism I expect a game that I can bite my teeth into not a series of 30-minutes rounds that always end the exact same way.

No matter what settings I tweak, any skirmish game is designed to end in 30 minutes or less. I did have the odd 40 minutes ones but that's about it. If you're too rich to be bought out by that time there's literally just nothing left to do but buy off your opponents and win. It is designed for that amount of round length whether you want that or not.

On that topic, I really don't get the recent wave of short-rounds game being forced on us. I respect those who want to play that but some of us want hours-long engagements... Like in Capitalism.

One of the best strategy games out there for multiplayer.

The procedural generated maps makes each game unique. The game is dope in that it combines layers of depth in strategy without burdening High APM. The goal is simple, make as much money as possible. How you get there is all about making all the right choices; HQ placement, tile placements, selling high, buying low, corner the markets, use abilities against your enemies, etc.

Highly Recommend

The AI is clever. On some difficulties i suspect it cheats though it has its limits and when you hit them the AI's debt bubble basically implodes and you win because their value just potholes like crazy.

The thing about this game is it is much less about running a successful operation and more about making the overall scene inhospitable for others operations. In fact the majority of games i play i drop my HQ to intentionally destroy high resource deposits i don't plan to claim or cannot claim early enough. This basically hurts the global economy of the game and results in higher prices for everyone and in some cases creates a cascade of debt as the game progresses.

Over time, it becomes a race to become self sustainable. those who cannot basically end up imploding thier debt bubble to crazy amounts.

Also, the financial devices patent is OP as F. If you manage to force a player or AI into the debt death spiral then their debt will give you insane amounts. Even after the player is bought out you still get payments from the company and multiple times i have forced a eleminated player into so much debt that i get well over 1 million credits in a single day.

I cannot recommend this game in its current state. As of 12/22/2020, the offline mode for skirmish mode and the campaign is broken. Attempting to start/load any game while offline unceremoniously boots you back to the main menu. This is a well known bug, which appears to effect all users, that was introduced back in 2019. The developers have not acknowledged the bug let alone shown any indication that they are working to fix it.

In addition, for some people, such as myself, you will need to launch the game, quit and then clear Steam's download cache for the dlc you own to be detected. This includes the 'core game' dlc which gives you access to the campaign and skirmish mode.

If the offline mode worked correctly, then I would gladly recommend this game.

Note, I have played this game for about 10 hours, not the 1.3 hours that are claimed by Steam. This was mostly before the free to play multiplayer version was released. It looks like my recorded game time was reset to 0 hours when that launched.

The base game is okay but nothing too memorable. Not enough for the metric cluck ton of DLC you are 'obligated' to buy if you want the 'full experience'.

3/10 potential WAS here but they shot themselves in the foot.

I like the game as a Strategy game. I enjoy playing it and it is really easy to just do a quick game for a short period and enjoy. I'll give a Rant and Game review seperately.
Rant:
I'm gonna give it a negative review because I bought this thinking it was a Management/Trading game. I thought I was gonna build a company and get resources and try to make money as much as I can. Instead I got an RTS game with Management elements in it. Maybe it is a bit of my fault for not really digging the info but game title , Steam tags , Key elements of the game that is being shown all were these and not once any RTS part. It is like making a Super Hero movie that has Drama elements in it and marketing it as Drama.
Game Review:
Anyone who enjoys RTS, this is an interesting take and certainly is fun. You fight with money not soldiers. You need to know how to use Debt, which resources you need to focus depending on situation, sabotages, timing.
You need to think fast and think couple moves ahead because if you are gonna upgrade your HQ and focus on a new resource afterwards an opponent might act before you and get the good spots. Or you might want to sell a resource or hold on to it for future price increase? Your opponent might hack the prices. Timing is really important and you need to carefully assess the moves your opponents can make. Also you need to be always on the watch for hostile takeovers. You might want to keep your debts piling or focus on getting resources first while your opponents buy your company without you realizing.

Don't buy this game, seriously, there are other, better, games that you will enjoy far more than this one. Do not say that you were not warned! That's what the review systems are for.

As of 11/15/2020, still does not allow you to play offline. I tested it before turning off my wifi, it allowed me to start a skirmish no problem, but as soon as I turned off my wifi and nothing doing. This kind of garbage DRM is one of the many things wrong with the gaming industry these days.

In addition, I will admit I got this in a bundle(So not free!), but I will be uninstalling it as of today. The gameplay kind of sucks anyway, gets extremely boring quite quickly. As others have mentioned, the stocks are the sole gameplay element of the game, because if you don't mess with those, you will lose!!

Overall, crappy DRM, crappy gameplay. Don't even get me started on DLC and the base price for how long it has been out along with how small, practically non-existent the player base is now...
Corporate greed does not only exist in video games.

-2/10 for DRM, gameplay, price, no players to play with, and apparently still no response to anyone mentioning this stuff.

Though I have enjoyed this game quite a bit in the past, I have just recently discovered I can't play singleplayer offline. I'm not the only one to experience this - I've seen several posts online, one on the game's official forum from a few months ago, but with no replies or explanations. It frustrates me greatly to learn the game's creators have quietly decided to disable(?) this.

Very enjoyable. It presents a good mental challenge. The game mechanics take a little while to learn, but once you do, it can be straightforward to play. One of my favorite things about the game is that each round completes in 45-60 minutes, much like a board game.

This game isn't as deep as it's made out to be, and I don't think replayability is very high. There's also literally nobody playing multiplayer most of the time, so that part of the game is largely irrelevant. I don't think the game mechanics are flawed in general, but there is one key problem, which is the way stocks work. First of all, you cannot buy stock of your company that is owned by others (which is the case for the AI as pertains to their own company as well), meaning that there is no way for a company to stave off being bought out and thus losing the game except by buying everyone else out. While this makes sense in an elimination context, it means that every game ends in the same way: a mad rush to buy out the AI before it does you (because the AI seems to require considerably less cash on hand to buy stocks than the player). However, the fundamental way that stocks work makes no sense at all: your cash, resources, debt etc. all matter considerably less than the total amount of stock you own. This means that your own stock price RISES a lot when you buy stock of others, even when you pay double the actual price after there is no unowned stock remaining. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever: not only is your company valued more after literally overpaying for others' stock and thus reducing the value of your total assets including cash, but there is no effect on the stock price of the company that is being bought, which is completely removed from reality in my opinion. When the game is down to the last two players, this results in a ridiculous situation where overpaying for your competitor's stock will result in a massive spike in your stock price and a massive drop in theirs (because they own less stock after you overpaid for theirs), and vice versa. The game itself is not THAT fun to start with, and the way this crucial mechanic works just completely ruins the late-game for me.

I loathe Stardock and their DLC policies, they milk your wallet like an addict trying to pay for their addiction by stealing from family. Parts and content that should be in the core game are cut out and sold later.

Playing a game Stardock has their hands in is like going to dinner and being charged for each item and not just the food. Front Door use $2.50, Table use $50, table cloth $4, chair $4, extra chairs $14, dining room cleaning tax, silverware $4 each: item total $44. Lighting on 6.99 ON SALE TODAY! and so on.

Game Base price: $20, DLC on sale $80. Save yourself the frustration and find a game that is complete and not hashed out into tiny pieces.

This game is super cool. It is unique in that, as a strategy game, there is no combat whatsoever. That's not to say you don't get into heated interactions and wish someone would have their mine blown up with dynamite (which I totally didn't hire people to do ;P ). It is a very interesting take on strategy and economic warfare.

Nice first impression - graphics, UI design, factions and overall premise. After a couple of hours you start to realize that it is hardly a space colony / city building game nor a tycoon sim. It feels more like a puzzle game where the puzzle is which buildings/resources to claim and in which order. There is no much room for creativity or joy of building a colony. Neither much space for experiments with different kinds of colonies, layouts, etc. Mechanics is actually to simple to become creative. Auto-generated maps do not bring much replayability as there is only a very minor strategic aspect to it - resources concentration vs cost of transport. Once you invent teleporation (which is very quick in practice) the location does not matter. There sims to be only one kind of victory which puts you at odds if you want to just experiment or have fun of architecting. Which is a letdown as graphics is nice.

With a few tweaks it could be a good mobile game. As a PC game it leaves a good first impression but not does not have enough to enjoy it for hours. It is not a 4X complexity game nor sandbox freedom of building (Theme Park, Railroads, Cities Skylines,...).

Really unique economic RTS. I have never seen similar concept! The core mechanic is to adapt your business to ever changing market. In your average strategy game if there is a building that needs stone, or wood, you have to build lumber mills and stone mines. Not in this game. You might need steel, but if its cheaper than water, you build water pumps, sell water, buy steel...and profit :) And to win the game you have to buyout the companies of other players :)
Also this has one of the hardest tutorial matches. It is simple to learn the game, but it takes some time to grasp what it takes to win it.

Easy to learn, hard to master real time strategy about base building and resource management in space. One of best capitalism simulations out there, with all consequences of supply, demand, and product shortage. To add some depth, there are upgrades, optimizations and possibilities of industrial sabotage.

A playthrough takes 20-60 minutes. Decent soundtrack and pretty visuals work perfectly for the game.

GAMEPLAY 8/10

Hello, dear reader. Depending on your interests and background, your experience with this game might be much different than mine or any other reviewer here. And looking at the other reviews on here, there are quite a few people who ended up putting this game down because they were confused or thought the game was too difficult. I don't write many reviews, but I am writing this in an attempt to convince you that this game just might be of interest to you and give some tips on how to understand the game better to speed up the learning curve.

I study Economics. I am also an avid investor in the stock market. So when I picked up this game there was almost no learning curve for me as I already understood the basics of supply and demand. However, this game presents the concept of supply and demand in such a hands on and intuitive way that it actually greatly increased my understanding of market forces, which made me a better investor! I consider this game a great educational tool if you are interested in business, finance, economics, or any related field such as starting your own business. Heck, even if you don't do any of those things, it can be great for personal finance.

Why? Because you learn first hand how a business operates. You start the game in debt. You have the option to wait and start the game without any debt, but this is a bad decision 99% of the time because time is money and losing even a few seconds in the beginning can put you way behind your competition. You also miss out on the best locations to found your new corporate space empire.

However, this is not a problem! Here's a fact: MOST businesses are constantly in debt. Nearly all businesses use debt, not cash, to expand their operations and grow. This is counter-intuitive to the average non-financially savvy person. But it's true. When the FED lowers interest rates, they are lowering the costs for businesses to borrow money which in turn motivates businesses to take on more debt and grow. On the flip side, it discourages consumer saving, which can also harm the economy as a whole (see Austrian versus Keynesian economic theory).

So, what this means is, in order to succeed in this game you must accept the fact that you're going to be in debt most of the game until maybe the very end, when you start buying out all your rivals to win the game. Debt is GOOD. Most of the people in the review section here probably thought that the first thing they had to do was pay down their debt, which crippled their ability to expand their operations and allowed their opponents to gain a huge advantage over them.

That's one lesson this game offers. Personal finance gurus often tell people that the most important thing is to pay down their debt. It is hammered into their heads. They're not wrong, because most people are consumers and not investors. But the opposite is true for business. In a business, the main goal is to grow and reinvest, not to consume. Therefore, debt is a wonderful thing!! The money you would have spent paying down debt is MUCH better spent building another glass factory to produce more PROFIT!

Another important strategy is to buy resources before you need them, while the price is still low. That way when you go to construct the buildings you need you're not paying the spot price at the time which could be high due to everyone else needing the resource. Of course, prices could also fall due to too many suppliers, so another aspect of the game is to monitor other players to see what they are producing (you can see other players' bases), as well as what resources they require so that you can preemptively stock up on those resources. The key is to constantly figure out which resources are the most profitable to produce not only now but also in the near future.

So, there you have it. These two tips will save you a lot of time in learning the game and being on your way to enjoying it. You might even try to compete in the daily challenge from time to time (my highest is 3rd place) =D. And on top of that, you gain the invaluable skill of seeing first hand how free markets interact and businesses operate, and therefore learn to become more financially successful yourself.
