It aches so to not recommend this game, but alas.

It's an atmospheric walking simulator with a super cool premise, but fails to deliver consistently. There's just a lack of things to do here. I don't mean things to interact with (even though it'd be welcome too), but rather a lack of commitment from the devs. The landscapes are gorgeous but they're very simple are once you've seen two or three, you've seen them all.
This last comment could be applied to the whole game, by the way... three types of weapons, three types of enemies... There's a severe lack of surprises.

All that could have been forgiven by a more varied ensemble of landscapes, or a less discrete soundtrack to come along with us, but you're just semi-alone of a planet semi-tranquil, with a semi-goal.

I had kind of a good time but it could have been so much more.

A nice game, simple and with solid gameplay. If you are looking for a story, this is not the best place, both its endings are abstract and open to interpretation, and even the little information you gather needs imagination to be combined. But it was still fun for me.
In 10h you can finish it, if you want to complete it, I strongly recommend that you mark on a map what you collect, so as to avoid wasting time later when chasing the longest achievements, the AEon's guides that you will find on Steam will help you.
An FPS Walking Simulator.
Good game =)

this game is criminally underrated.

the game feels extremely alive since all the robots have jobs and can start their own wars. the game feels like it would move on without you.
every robot feels unique. with all their own weapons and ranks. it feels like they advance with you.
the visual effects in the radioactive areas are very atmospheric. it definitely feels like i shouldn't be in those areas too long.
the weapons are very varied and fun tho i feel the SMG's are a bit overpowered.
the game doesnt really drag on. its a good decent length. could definitely be completed in 1 sitting if you are not a speedrunner.

now for a few cons
the game is very buggy. its very easy to clip through the terrain and the jumping is not very fluent. sometimes i manage to jump very very high and i'm not sure why this happens.

tl;dr this game is great if you like to feel part of a world instead of a world being part of you.
but it has a few bugs and glitches.

Honestly, I'm quite on the fence about this title.
I don't particularly enjoy it because the open world feels quite bland during traversal when there isn't anything happening.

However, it does have a cool sci fi theme, and the idea of playing as a drone is interesting. I also quite like how some of the guns look, and when allied robots get pulled into combat, the resulting firefight can be reasonably fun. I also do like doing recon with binocular and tag enemies before going in with the actual assault.

I guess I'll ultimately give it a thumb up since the game is very cheap when on sale. Just note that the game can be rather simplistic and quite dull at times.

THIS IS A VERY CAUTIOUS RECOMMENDATION

A problematic first-person exploration-shooter hybrid, Tolva attempts to channel the spirit of such classics as Far Cry and STALKER, with some of the otherworldliness and ambivalence of Morrowind, but never achieves such heights. Its gorgeous, impressionist sci-fi sandbox is let down by mediocre and unfair-feeling gunplay, bugs, limited progression and a dearth of rewarding activities. Graphically impressive and blessed with an evocative, understated electronic score, Tolva’s artistic achievements are sold short by an almost non-existent plot, which leaves a lot of heavy lifting to a kind of arthouse portentiousness and cryptic snippets of text. And no, I don’t think appending a pdf of lore to your game constitutes good narrative design in 2017 (when this was released).

As other reviewers have pointed out, those expecting a traditional FPS here will likely be disappointed. Tolva’s dozens of near-identical guns pew-pew weightlessly, enemies react so poorly to impacts that the game feels compelled to display a “HIT” in your HUD when aiming down sights, and your tactical options are largely restricted to assault rifles and sniper rifles. Scouting out enemy fortifications and then picking the defenders off one by one is satisfying, but the tendency of neighbouring squads to pile into firefights – or even respawn in the base you’re trying to clear – can see some scraps devolve into chaos. There’s a loose factional system of three-way tussles between your mates, called Surveyors, and the insta-hostile Bandits and Zealots, you see, and while the tactical enemy AI is decent, the strategic overworld of bases dynamically changing hands typically just sees a base you struggled to capture occasionally falling to the enemy offscreen. Meanwhile, the option to recruit friendlies to accompany you is welcome, but not at the cost of one of your two precious weapon slots. There’s great potential in the ecosystem of squabbling robot factions, but as implemented feels vestigial.

The exploration aspect of the game is superior. Tolva’s terrain is a meditative wonder to traverse, with undeniably imaginative visual design featuring plenty of wrecked sci-fi behemoths to marvel at, and a few lovely instances of alien wildlife breathing life into what can otherwise be a rather sterile landscape. The map is perhaps a little too big, however, with a lot of repetitive scenery and few memorable highlights. Its nooks and crannies infrequently reward exploration, and aside from pitched battles, mission items to scan and generic chunks of “resource” to hoover up, there’s little to do. The un-marked and un-fun “mazes” are a final and thankfully infrequent challenge, in which you tediously trial-and-error a path through identical grey corridors that play with space in impossible and infuriating ways. Some even seal you inside, which might see you – like me – restart the checkpoint rather than continue to wander in circles. Then there are quite frequent bugs, including one – the skybox irrevocably disappeared, leaving the game world in darkness – that forced me to abandon the main campaign just shy of its conclusion. The Polar Regions DLC, while generous of the devs to include for free, is just a rehash of the main game on a smaller and more linear map, with snow.

Overall, then, Tolva is an ambitious, largely failed experiment that is supremely successful at evoking an atmosphere of ruined interstellar empire, but otherwise feels humstrung by its small team’s limited development resources. There’s the seed of something great here, and players prepared to meet Tolva in the middle may well enjoy the campaign’s 10 or so hours, but others might well be compelled to give up by the lack of progression, repetitive encounters and ephemeral plot. It’s a shame when there’s undoubtedly plenty of space in the market for solid single-player FPS sandboxes, especially with such mature and thoughtful worldbuilding as Big Robot display here.

This one caught my attention quickly when i started playing again, it's an exploration SF FPS : you play the role of some kind of pirate/investigator who hijacks robots-workers on a newly discovered planet that shows signs of the visit of an ancient civilization and weird artifacts emitting strange signals. 2 other factions sent their robots there, which leads to conflicts and a race to discover stuff.

I liked this game a lot, at the beginning i played it one hour or 2 from time to time, exploring at a slow pace (i hadn't read everything and missed a few key things), but then as i advanced in it and discovered new things, i quickly finished it, and did the second campaign in only 2 days (meaning 2 sequences of a few hours, not 48h !).

It seems slow and with a lot of walking and doing the same thing, which is true, but if you get what you need to do, you can set yourself objectives, and visit everywhere. There are frequent encounters with enemies, where the FPS side of the game appears, and the fights are really nice, there are a few different kind of weapons with many alternatives. There are also strange riddle places. And you really need to go to your dashboard and see how much stuff you still need to investigate so you don't miss one, and use your radar a lot ! Also, go to the computers in the bases, so you can gain levels !

Graphically it has some kind of light comics effect, like Borderlands (but less than Borderlands). And the story, the atmosphere, the feeling reminds me of a lot of old SF books/movies.

Some little bugs from time to time (but really not much), the story is a little bit on the side, as all you get is from your scans and readings, sometimes communications, and you probably won't get them in the right order, so it might seem a little confuse (i was confused). A good little game.

5 hours in, and the game has stopped being entertaining.

At around 5 hours into the campaign, you hit a wall of progression and start to lost the moajority of firefights you get into. Although the respawn is almost instant, the veeeeeeeeryyyyy sloooooooooooowww waaaaaaaaaaaaaalkiiiiiiiiiiiiiing towards where you need to get to makes you not want to take 10 more minutes of slow walking to the same fight area.

Movement is clunky and glitchy. I got stuck between rocks and walls many times and had to return to spawn areas to unstuck myself.

The very slow pace of the game, the vast open areas that are mostly empty, the very few story moments and the abundant walking with mind numbing monotony make a game that does not inspire the player to push harder, but instead make a game that is tedious and unrewarding to play.

A whacky exploration game where you need to clear/capture all points to end the story. There is not much gist into it. Story is told by notes you found throughout the journey and without the support of quality music and effects, the game stands so dull on its own. Gunplay where most of the game is centered around, is a bit tactical thus fun, however it feels unresponsive and clunky at most times. Most favourable side of this game is being short; you can finish in 6-8 on average.

In the end, not recommended.

The Signal From Tölva is fantastic game but only if you understand what to expect and probably more importantly, what *not* to expect. Most of the negative reviews seem to be from the perspective that this game failed to deliver as a pure FPS experience. And it most likely does. I can't say too much about that point of view as I have played very few standard FPS games as it would take a unique setting and story like this one to draw me into the genre.

While it is definitely falls under the category of a first person shooter if you try to describe the mechanics, it is much more accurately described as a sci-fi adventure game or walking sim with FPS sequences thrown in to add action and tension to the game world.

I truly enjoyed the experience of exploring this mysterious barren planet full of scrap and dust by hacking into the frames of various drones that roam the sunbaked landscape. I was immersed in trying to piece together the remnants of discarded and corrupted data in order to try to solve a mystery. And I was captivated by the idea of AI cultures and ideologically opposed factions of robots. I fell in love with the world building and setting that is further explained and clarified in the lorebook; and pondering the potential fate of my interference in the Magnitude universe.

While you have the ability to eventually hack up to 4 additional drones to round out your bot squad to rush more heavily guarded points and progress into harder areas, and have a large arsenal of weapons... TSfT is absolutely not a fast paced, gunplay focused shooter. Everything (including you) is fragile, and the robot factions become increasingly desperate for control of this tiny decayed husk of a planet. You will blow up frequently, discard the drone you hacked to the uncaring wasteland to fade into obscurity, and... simply claim another. Over and over again, all under the guise of imitating an advanced AI to remain undetected as you work towards your own agenda.

How do you ultimately choose to handle an intelligence that is so many orders of magnitude above you, realizing that your kind have absolutely no hope to ever understand it?

It's a meditative, slow burn adventure with many questions and only a few well placed answers.

This isn't a game for everyone, and that's pretty clear to see by the reviews.

Just so you're aware dear reader - it is on the slow side and could easily be marked as a walking simulator if it wasn't for the FPS combat and the occasional territory tug-of-war.
I'd say it sits mostly as a relaxing experience where you stomp around collecting things, littered with FPS moments and the occasional puzzle room.

There is a story present, but it's not spoon-fed so don't expect Deus Ex style branching dialogue options. You're an AI controlling a bot(s), you see the world differently and for that, the way the logbook entries (like pieces of a puzzle) slowly connect revealing a larger plot - you go around looking for 'stored memories' which unfold the story bit by bit.
If you want more lore up front though, then I'd recommend you check out the game's manual which is essentially a very detailed lore book.

Setting wise, think ghost in the machine where machines are driven mad by a signal on a planet they cannot comprehend.
It's a pretty cool concept and as you go about exploring this planet and all of its architecture, it all invokes a sense of awe and wonder and the great discovery of the unknown.
Really enjoyed seeing how radiation and other environmental conditions affected my bots' optics. Really cool use of filters - think exclusion zones in Stalker.

Ambient sounds and the whole desolate ruined planet ridden with robots everywhere really gave me Neir Automata vibes. Sounds of giant derelict ships creaking as you explore them makes an otherwise barren world feel that little bit more alive.
Positional audio is superb! You know exactly where something is and where you're getting shot from, with gunfire reverberating across the hills and surrounding area. You can hear the distant thump of a giant walker and you 'feel' the direction through the ground. It's awesome.
There's no real music tracks to write home about though - just some dramatic combat clips you won't hear over gunfire and some spooky ambiance.

Immersion breaking issues:
  • One huge drawback is the poor optimisation - running it on a RTX2070 Super, max everything and in certain areas my frames can tank below 40fps
  • Random crashes to desktop
  • I did get stuck on geometry due to how the bots move, but was able to possess other bots to escape such situations
  • Scanmode did glitch out on me with it not staying on at all, a restart resolved this
  • Some people are reporting having their save data corrupted (affected by the ghosts of Tolva I see!) but I didn't encounter any of it

All the guns are pretty much the same and bringing bots with you takes up a weapon slot that could be used for a gun that actually kills enemies since the follows you bring are useless. This game is more of an adventure game where you discover pretty shapes and read the text you get from them and that is about it. Performance is also terrible even with my 2080ti and i9 intel cpu.

I would only recommend this if you can snatch it up for $5.

It is hard to recommend this game. Not a bad game by any means. But after the first half hour of playing, you've pretty much seen it all.

The mechanics and overall gameplay is fine, the combat is fun, there's just not a whole lot to do. The story is somewhat interesting but it isnt presented in an interesting way at all.

The gameplay loop is essentially, collect money, read logs, shoot some robots to take over areas, scan things in order to progress the story, i.e. read more logs. A LOT of walking about.

Visually the game is very nice. Easily the games strong pont. Not immense graphic fidelity, but aesthetically very nice.

Again. The features and mechanics that do exist are implemented well. There is just not a whole lot of stuff to actually do. It feels like its missing something and I can't quite put my finger on it.

You're a robot. Wander, shoot stuff, take over a base, shoot more stuff, take over another base, then do it all over again. The sandbox is large for an indie game and flows well; nothing feels copy-pasted. Story-telling is done entirely through collectible text logs, so there's not much to it. There are two different endings, and you'll sort of know what is happening, though depending on if you actually read all the text logs, you might not know why. Enemy AI is decent; game can be hard if you want it to be.

An agreeable way to spend 10 hours if you like exploring open worlds and want to support an indie dev.

Total size on my hard-drive: 2.2 GB

The Linux port (OpenGL) suffers from frame-drops when rendering long draw-distances, but otherwise functions well.

This is a very good, but weird game. It probably isn't for everyone, if you go into it expecting a high octane FPS you will be disappointed. Simply put, Tolva is a story game, but the story telling is so subtle you can very easily go through the whole game without picking it any of it up. I would say it takes about an hour to properly get into, but as soon as you properly start looking its very easy to get hooked. Everything about this game works, especially the clunky shooting. Afterall, you are a crude and clunky robot, using clunky equipment. This works in Tolva's favour. Its a very peaceful game, but the more you look you can easily get spooked or have some really REALLY good firefights. Like I said, the storytelling is very subtle and would probably go over most peoples heads, but the more you invest in it the more you get out of it.

Mind you, it's not a game for framerate, but I feel as if it's part of the game.
All the small details pile up, even after less than an hour of gameplay.
Easy to learn, some things unclear, but again, less than an hour of gameplay.

TL;DR: No performance issues on ubuntu 20.04, visually very interesting, cool gameplay.

Cant quite put my finger on it, but this reminds me of another title and I liked that one too!.
Its a different approach to the FPS open world (within reason) as you play as hacked robots and you can jump from one to another. Story driven but many ways to complete it so you do have some freedom. I rather like the atmospheric. Might get repetitive eventually, but don't all these sort of games.?.

Overall, it's a fantastic experience. Think Far Cry mixed with sci-fi.

Is it worth 20 dollars? Only if you're a big fan of this kind of open world design.
The story is VERY light, though the signal data you collect IS a lot of fun to read! AND it comes with a lorebook that's great for lore-lovers.
The content in missions is very simple, but is very nicely executed.
The world is nicely sized, with FANTASTIC art direction that makes you feel like you're in a painting. And it comes with a free expansion too! That's a plus!
The only downside to the world is that there's a LOT of running around. Luckily, there's a LOT of fast travel you can do. Still, would've really benefited with a vehicle for making traveling around more fun and less tedious.
Also the gunplay is a little off feeling, with how still the recoil is, yet how inaccurate the firing seems to be. But the sounds and visuals are very nice in feedback.

My only real issue with the game is that it still has a few bugs, the biggest being that the game thought I captured 4 bunkers when I was still only on one, and it even gave me an achievement for capturing 4 of them.

Outside of that though, I'd say it's a very underrated game, that MIGHT be a little over-priced if it wasn't for its fantastic world, art and atmosphere!

Wow, terrible. I can't believe it, but honestly Sir, You Are Being Hunted is the best game they could make. If you buy ANYTHING FROM THEM JUST GET IT. It the peak of these shitty, run around in an empty map and find shit games. Tolva has the worst excuse for gun combat I have ever seen in my life, and they all shoot about as straight as someone pissing in the quick stop bathroom. It goes everywhere! Its annoying, then it takes five years to reload EVERY WEAPON. I think I'd rather slam my toe in a door, id get more rush and fun out of it. I think The Light Keeps Us Safe was poorly executed but this is horribly executed and have only come to believe the only people who like it genuinely are just fans of their older games. This is just a horrible walking sim that Im sad 90 percent of the gameplay is walking in a empty map because one of the first builidngs you go to is AWESOME. You go through rooms and you will turn around and they change and stuff. COOLEST THING I HAVE SEEN FROM THIS DEVELOPER YET. However, no more of this pops up, or at least anytime soon. Which makes me believe it was just there to push people past the first 2 hours so they cant refund. The game is stinky garbage, dont get it. Get Sir, You Are Being Hunted if you buy any of Big Robot Ltd games. Though, I dont even recommend that game, some people have enjoyed it and I understand why, Its challenging in some ways and hard in others.

3/10 disgusting, terrible combat, walking around sluggishly to scan objects, making The Light Keeps Us Safe even do this better...

This game is a great adventure! I've been wanting this game for a long time but due to negative reviews I never really bought it, so when it came out in a bundle I had to get it!
Playtime ~8 hours.
A mix of walking simulator, exploration, gunning and a rich story as you explore the zone.
The zone is beautiful. Really good work on it! You get resources as you explore to buy weapons, armor and rad-equipment.
The game can be somewhat difficult if you end up doing mistakes when buying upgrades (like I did at first) but as long as you have good weapons it's easy to beat the enemies.

The control is smooth (love the tilt sniper) and the fast travel is creative. The world is beautiful, the places where the story leads you are
spellbinding ,they build up the tension perfectly, the ambient ,the music, the lighting...all. It's easy to find the mission objects with that special view. The AI is challenging, love the fact that you can go solo in a battle or with a full squad. Even though the readable part of the story is boring and a waste of time, the game itself is fun and addictive

Decent shooting gameplay that's been spread so thin you can barely see it among the morass of pointing yourself at a waypoint and holding W. Data log storytelling with entries that boil down to a bunch of jargon and snark without substance.

Devs seem to have had a kernel of a good idea here but padded it out to an almost comical degree rather than make a tight and focused experience. Main priority is wasting the player's time.

That said the presentation is very good but it's about the only thing worth mentioning.

The point of the game is kind of confusing? Additionally there is a sort of x-ray mode you use to find items and the effect/noise it makes gave me the worst headache

Jim Rossignol left Rock, Paper, Shotgun - which he had co-founded - to make games about robots.
Jim, look how they massacred your boy...

Where his first game, Sir, You Are Being Hunted was a unique open-world randomly generated stealth thriller, The Signal From Tölva is... budjet S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Honest to God, that's what it is! There are different factions of robots. Squads of these factions roam the hand-crafted beautiful wilderness. They shoot each other. The player controls one among them and can also get themselves a squad of their own. And the gameplay is: you collect artifacts, you fight for outposts, you uprgrade yourself, repeat. It's extremely simplistic. And the combat is nothing to write home about. Yes, there is weapon variety, and when fighting in close quarters, there is a certain shield-based dynamic to the fight, but once you develop a basic strategy, which will happen very soon, there will be no more surprises left.

But the game is still enjoyable! Why? Because such freeroam is simply engaging! And the world is very beautiful - the artists did a wonderful job on the landscape - it's colorful, it's diverse, it has great vistas which sometimes get legitimately breathtaking.

A very pleasant [strike]if repetitive[/strike] freeroam game.

They killed this game like all their other projects and now they heavily moderate their community and use it's corpse as a way to advertise new games that they'll abandon just like this one. Don't trust any product produced by big robot they're lazy and throw out basic bland games and never update them.

Much more forgiving and penetrable than Sir, You Are Being Hunted this is Big Robot's most robust, whole and successful game to date.

Like all Big Robot games it's been stripped and shaved of all non-essential cruft until there are only gleaming metal bones left, which can feel at times a bit limiting or unfinished (or even cheap in the case of Sir) but in this case they've gotten the balance exactly right. Tolva is a subtle story-telling engine with some enjoyable combat mixed through it, finely-tuned like a performance racing engine. There's nothing wasted on things you won't need.

They have, however, absolutely lavished effort everywhere else. There are two 10+ hour campaigns on offer (the Polar Regions having been added into the game post-release) and each landscape is beautifully designed - gorgeously sci-fi retro - expertly crafted and stunningly lit. There are an impressive variety of things to see, each adding to the general lore of the world you're exploring and the universe it inhabits. The well balanced Day/Night cycle offers its own variety and rewards too; only when the lights dim and then go dark do you truly appreciate the sparkling neon components on each robot and object around you.

The core gameplay loop is nicely streamlined: explore to find and investigate sites of interest, hunt around wrecks for resources (the game's currency) then use those to feed your upgrades back at base. Fight red and blue robots (boo hiss): assist fellow yellows where you can. Kill Reds and Blues guarding bases (or beacons) to take over that base, thus extending your span of control and exploration reach (You can fast travel between any bases you control, or return to one at any time via the map).

Sound design is excellent throughout - I watched a couple of my fellow robots having a conversation entirely in their robotic dialect and I swear I could almost understand it given the tone of delivery. Sound positioning and attenuation is also superb. The SNAPs, CRACKLEs and POPs of gunfire in the distance, signs of a battle raging between factions, bring extra life and drama to the environments. And watching - or even being a part of - a battle a night with glowing lasers lancing through the gloom, robots squealling alarms and systems powering up and down, is an always thrilling cacophany of splendour.

The weapons in Tovla are pure sci-fi death-light emitters and some of them sound PHENOMENAL. With access to most weapons locked behind templates you need to find and then in-game paywalls (no micro-transactions here, thankfully) you're unlikely to unlock them all in a play-through meaning careful perusal of the stats is required before purchasing. But for those who enjoy tweaking a loadout to get a particular play-style nailed down, you'll be well catered for. Also: the SQu-1D Phreaker, the tool that slaves comrades to your direct command, becomes pretty much essential as you ascend the ranks and enemies get slightly more numerous: there's no feeling better than emptying a bunker of zealot scum with four tooled-up, over-wired gear-heads at your side. Wreck and Rule!

This game is a little bit of a Masterpiece. A reasonably challenging and always fun sci-fi adventure/experience that everyone should play at least once especially if you're a fan of robotic life or sci-fi generally. Players who let the game be what it is rather than imprinting their own expectations will be rewarded with majestic sights, cool surprises, dramatic battles of attrition, beguiling snippets of narrative and - something that really does bear highlighting and isn't seen enough in games - welcome periods of downtime where you can wander and soak in the beauty and mystery of the landscape around you.

TL:DR - Signal Received and Very Much Enjoyed. Highly Recommended. [COMPLICATED DIGITISED WARBLING]

Not bad, not great, just kinda boring.

You'd best play this while listening to a podcast or something like that, because the gameplay doesn't really renew itself until the very end, at which point you'll be powerful enough to stomp on any enemy encounter like it's nothing anyway.

I can't say much about the story, since most of it is presented through text logs that i was not interested in reading. Some of the locations and unique events were sort of interesting, but they were few and far between.

Had high hopes for this but the core gameplay is a bit unbalanced. You can die very easily and save points can be way back which is quite cruel nowadays. Also I lost a save point and so had to go back even further and so just gave up as there was just too much walking around. There are some nice elements, like the robots that help you out, but they can draw you into a battle when you don't want to. Running feels like walking. Crouched is far too slow and you lean around. I like that they are trying something new but it just doesn't work for me.

Very boring and repetitive. The combat is based around cycling between shielding and shooting at enemies, and can last way too long IMO. You basically just stand and trade shots with enemies until one of you dies, you can hide behind cover and outsmart them kind of but your character does not feel very unique or powerful. You can get AI to follow you and fight with you but doing so takes up a weapon slot and meaning you can use less weapons in the already bland combat. Guns don't feel unique or powerful at all, there are just a lot of them, and I never felt a sense of progression. The game is just a bland 4-5 / 10. It functions and has a large world but has little worthwhile content, moments, or identity.

Feels like half a game and a far cry from what it could be.

There is a story here but I'm not sure what it was. Lots of notes to pick up in the game but I wasn't immersed enough to want to read them. Would help alot if it had some characters with personality instead of a bunch of robots.

Has a bunch of bugs including buttons stopping working until you changed weapons and one time I had to restart to get the scanner to work again

Has a bunch of 'hidden' items but gives you a scanner to find them so they really aren't that hard to find, feels a bit cheaty

Numerous times you will be ambushed including squads that just appear out of nowhere. Its cheap, repetitive and especially annoying when you know exactly when it is going to happen but can't do anything about it.

The game gives you most of your mechanics up front which can be a bit daunting and unfortunately the game doesn't really evolve much as you move across the map. There are unlocks you have to get to access some areas, but its just shoot/explore/repeat.

Its not a bad game its just not recommended when there are so many other good games out there. The one good thing is that it is very short.

Recommended with caveats.

Pros:
- extremely pretty (alien highlands indeed, and the aesthetics are very sharp)
- lovely weapons (the rail accelerators are supremely satisfying, automatic gunfire snaps pleasantly)
- some clever mechanics (puppeteering other drones to set up a firefight is cool and fun)

Cons:
- lots of repetitive walking (some form of transport was probably not in budget, but better beacon placement would have helped)
- some glitching and feedback issues (I got stuck on the landscape, saw through some rocks, and weapon hits are real hard to confirm most of the time)
- some unclever design choices (giving up one weapon slot out of two for a Dude Controller is rarely worth it, capture mechanics aren't intuitive at first)

This is a solid game, and I've enjoyed it so far. Would I play it a second time through? Probably. But I can't see playing it through more than three times, tops. It's a small, tightly-built single-player game; it's not so much that there's no replayability, as replayability will be determined by how much you enjoy the core gameplay loop (walk around, tag other robots, shoot at other robots, find stuff) and atmosphere for themselves.

I will say if you have a 10-11 -ish kid who likes Nerf guns and you want a game with zero gore that is extra shooty and satisfying this would be a good one to hand them. It teaches you the basics of good FPS combat; it's an excellent combat mechanics tutor, it's fun on its own merits, and there's a lot to hook in an active imagination.

I'm glad I played it. I'm also glad it was on sale.

I'm really enjoying this - have been playing over the Easter weekend. Despite the fact it's a game about shooting enemy robot factions with lasers, i've found the experience really quite chill. With a semi-open world, the core gameplay is exploration, information gathering to solve the mystery of the 'signal' and light combat. The exploration, together with the music and general ambience of the world, i've found really quite zen, which is a massive plus in the current global situation we're all in. The combat is light enough to keep you engaged, but not over the top or that often that it becomes the main experience.

The mystery is intriguing and well written - you unlock the story by finding collectable orb-thingies scattered around the world. A really nice sensor system tells you when you get close to one of these, to save you exploring blind to find them. It's well written too which incentivises further exploration of the world, which uncovers some really fun surprises in certain areas too as a reward for poking about the world.

A couple of points to build on for future games - I found the 'maze' structures way more frustrating than fun. Wandering in circles for 10-15 minutes gets old really quite fast. I also found the lore book which comes with the game wonderfully well written, and it really fleshes out the world of the game - however at least 5 hours in only about 10% of that world is explored by the game itself. There's a lot of world building in the lore book which isn't touched in the game (I might be wrong here - i'll update if that changes the more I play).

I also found the shield mechanic slightly annoying during combat - enemies pop up a shield which delays the satisfying 'bang' of destroying them and makes the combat, occasionally, a bit of a chore.

All in all though, highly recommended. Big thumbs up!

It's a nice little shooter, but it is very short and it doesn't have that much variety. Managed to complete the game and unlock most of the achievements in just 7 hours. The atmosphere is nice and I liked exploring a world that truly felt alien. If you're getting it on a sale, I would recommend trying it out. I wouldn't pay more than 5-10 bucks, though.

The atmosphere might've been interesting if the game wasn't finding new and inventive ways to glitch out every ten minutes. The lore isn't any less shoddy, and it never really gets to a point where it has any bite to it. There are multiple endings! Both of them are extremely underwhelming. There's a lorebook PDF file! It offers no further insights.

The gameplay comes second after soaking in the atmosphere, which is what I expected going in, but what little of it there is isn't very solid. Whether you enjoy FPS combat or not, you will have to engage in a very slapdash variant of it. The AoE option is interesting! The ridiculously durable shields every enemy gets access to (your recruited allies use it very rarely, if ever) take ages to chew through or wait out. In the end, you fight many samey fights against the same enemies in the same environments to no benefit but unlocking the next respawn point.

The atmosphere might be interesting? The game wouldn't stop breaking for long enough to find out.
Everything but the HUD disappearing. Muzzle flashes turning into big black squares. The scan vision turning off the moment you turn it on. Flickering lights. Maze walls and floors randomly deciding not to render. Can't go for ten minutes without running into something, and if you want/have to restart your game, you go aaaall the way back to the last respawn point.

I can't think of any reason to recommend this game. So I'm not.

PS: If you do decide to give this game a shot, you'll find yourself picking between AoE options. I recommend the one that makes enemies stop attacking and flee. The range is huge, it instantly gives you a lot of breathing room, and the effect stays in place even as you shoot your running opponents in the back.

There are some promising ideas here. Unfortunately, one of the key selling points is the ability to control other robots and build a little squad. In order to do so you need to give up a weapon slot and you can’t fast travel with your squad either. So if you want to go and recruit some bots you have to take the long way, and if they die, it’s a slog to go get some more… at least it would have been if I could have been bothered at that point.

It’s probably possible to play the game without this feature, but I died pretty quickly without what essentially amount to decoys.

A prime example of a game that needed the influence of a producer/publisher to provide some much sanity checking.

Overview

The Signal From Tolva (TSFT) is an open-world FPS set in a sci-fi universe governed by a race of sentient machines, where various factions compete to control resources and territory on a galactic scale. This game takes place on the barren planet Tolva, once theater to a great conflict but now little more than a pile of ruins. A mysterious signal attracts the attention of several major factions including yours, the information brokers, who sent you as their agent to find the source of the signal and the truth about the events happening on the planet.

???? Pros
  • Very good atmosphere and world-building. Roaming the barren, war-torn locations of Tolva is evocative and can be quite a sight.
  • Well done indirect narration style that keeps mystery high at all times and allows players to interpret the story by piecing together fragments of lore.
  • Combat is decently challenging and always makes players feel like just another soldier, never as a powerful hero.
  • The overall combination of activities and gameplay mechanics works fairly well and delivers enough global variety.

???? Cons
  • Combat is too linear, lacks depth and weapon / enemy variety. Soon fights start to feel stale and repetitive.
  • Performance issues on AMD CPUs, crippling the framerate considerably. (40-50 FPS on 3900X / 2080Ti @1440p)
  • The additional Polar Regions campaign has nothing new to offer on a gameplay or equipment level.
  • Certain mechanics such as bunker conquest / defense and teammate control feel too simplistic.

Rating: Good

On the good side, TSFT's perhaps strongest point is the atmosphere it delivers with the environment. Exploring the barren plains of Tolva, riddled with remnants of a war long past and as well completely unknown artifacts, is somewhat poetic, as battles still rage on to the present day between the factions attracted by the Signal. From rocky plains to ancient ruins, each environment is minimalist but very well done and coherent in style.

Narrative is another strong suit and uses visual clues, fragments of lore, conversations, stories instead of more direct means to explain events, so each player can have their own interpretation of what is going on, or happened before. Combat on the good side is definitely challenging (at least on Hard) and has a good way of making you feel as just another unit among a much larger conflict, which can be easily killed and forgotten, which is coherent with the story.
The various gameplay elements such as outpost conquest, team commanding, exploration of ruins, secrets and progression form a good system that is interesting until the end.

On the bad side, there are several things to note. First of all the combat itself lacks depth and variety: there may be a lot of weapons but they feel very similar to each other with only three archetypes, while enemies as well become stronger but remain the same in weapons and patterns, counting no more than 4-5 variants in total.

There is a free expansion, Polar Regions, offering some more story insight but however changing nothing on a gameplay basis, and after finishing the main game restarting everything from scratch just for some obscure lore fragments is not something I can see many doing. Lastly, some mechanics are good ideas but feel lacking in depth, and could be improved, with things as better hacked teammate controls or a more dynamic conquest system on the global map.

Overall, Tolva is a good open world FPS that delivers enjoyable gameplay, original setting and strong narrative, but also is held back by several other issues. It took me around 8 hours to complete the main campaign, throw in a few more for the considerably shorter Polar expansion. For a default price of 20€ and no replay value, I can suggest waiting for a sale before getting this game, full price is not really worth it.

In-Depth Breakdown

???? Gameplay Analysis
The gameplay of TSFT is divided into Exploration, Character Management and Combat.

Exploration
Is performed on foot and with the aid of a global map, outlining points of interest in each region you discover. A custom marker function makes it simple to get to your destination. As you progress you will conquer and unlock fast travel points such as Relays and Bunkers, the latter though can be retaken by the enemy sometimes, but offers a loadout terminal as well, which Relays lack.

Other than points of interest, there are many unmarked locations to find such as maze-ruins and crevices containing additional lore to scan. Being attentive and using your augmented vision to find resources, to then spend in upgrades, is fundamental while exploring, to have enough later on. In case of death the penalty is backtracking a variable part of the map, but there is no other loss.

Character Management
Is done at terminals found at any Bunker. There you can equip primary and secondary weapons among those unlocked so far, one AoE ability such as drone summons, area enemy disable and more, and a shield variant for combat. A shop allows you to spend resources acquired in any of these things, new equip is unlocked for purchase as missions get completed. Delivering missions to a bunker also increases your rank, which allows you to equip better gear and hack higher level allies to follow you.

Combat
Plays out in FPS style, with an energy shield you can activate to deflect damage and various weapon classes and abilities to use, as well for the enemy. Engagements have a rather slow pacing since a few shots can kill both yourself and most enemies without a shield, superiority of numbers is a huge advantage and taking on multiple foes is quite difficult. Health and shield regen over time and abilities have a cooldown.

The problem with combat is that there isn't enough depth or variety to it, as weapons and enemies will start feeling all the same soon enough, while precision is not rewarded as there is no headshot bonus. The FPS combat part is quite mediocre and stale, and while challenging, remains one of the weakest gameplay parts.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2019821061

???? Technical
PC Specs: RTX2080Ti, Ryzen 3900X, 32GB RAM DDR4
There are no major issues to note. The game's default anti-aliasing does not work properly and this results in major aliasing at the edges of objects, the only way to fix this is using external means such as video card panel or Reshade. There are performance issues with AMD CPUs, as on my config the game ran on an average 40-50 FPS at 1440p, even with high-spec hardware.

Final Thoughts

A good open world FPS with an almost equal number of good and bad points, ultimately carried by the original setting and well made narration - but still with multiple issues and design shortcomings.

I read some positive things about this and got it on sale for $10....that turned out being too much. The game is fairly boring and the shooting mechanics aren't that fun. It kind of wants to be an exploration game instead of a shooter, but the landscapes are pretty barren. And for a game full of empty blocky enviornments it also runs really poorly on my system (I would think a GTX1080 should be good enough to get 60fps at 1080p 100% of the time...but it's not). The sound is pretty sparse and kind of annoying at times. To round out the package the story is minimal too. Kind of surprised it has so many positive reviews. There are a lot better shooters and/or exploration type games on Steam. 5/10...lame and boring.

A game that have too much of an open world but nothing really important to explore, everything on land seems a bit futile, too much to walk on too little to see, don't get me wrong the Tale seems interesting, I love a good mystery, maybe they aimed too big, even so the game has potential, some clever/ good-looking designs.

I believe if they would take the decision of making the world smaller, making it more compact and design more strange landscaping it would feel less vague. But overall developers have some good ideas for this sci-fi, so worth coming back to check their futures games.

+Good Atmosphere (all the audio and visual designs)
+Combat never gets boring
+Smart(annoying) puzzles

-Not a good way to tell a story
-Walks very boring and excessive
-The game feels just.. empty
