This version is fine, but the definitive edition that was only released for consoles is so much better. That version has enemy lock-on (that's right, you can't even manually target enemies in this), Hardcore mode (makes gameplay more like classic DMC), Bloody Palace for Vergil, Gods Must Die mode (harder form of DMD), extra costumes, and numerous other gameplay tweaks.

I do not recommend buying this iteration of the game unless it's on a deep discount.

Loved the News Channel boss fight

Vergil has a bigger stick than Dante, important information there

New look of Dante looks like crap, please use the Dante's old look DLC. Talking about DLC, aside from Vergil's Downfall the rest should have been included and absurd that is still being sold for this expensive

This game is one of my absolute favorite games that I've played over 3 decades. I know it gets a lot of hate for the plot, the change from the series, Dante's appearance in general but I won't budge. It was a special period of my life and I had the honor of playing it with my best friend who no longer is around so...I love it. I love the story of his parents. I love the battle with his brother. I love the art. Fight me.

The gameplay is simplistic compared to the mainline Devil May Cry series but that also makes it more accessible for newcomers. The story is kinda lame but no one plays Devil May Cry for the story anyway, so the skip the cutscenes if it bothers you that much. The BEST level design in the series by far. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The edgy stuff might be a bit overbearing and the combat might lack the depth and nuance of the main series but if you can set those complaints aside (like I did), it's a helluva lot of fun.

Perhaps this is not the Devil May Cry that many have been waiting for but it's not so bad after all. I admit that the game has flaws but they are not so critical. For example, I don't really like Dante's appearance *, I also don't like the mechanics of colored enemies (which are destroyed by certain weapons), and a couple of strange boss battles. But as I said, they get lost against the background of everything else.
After the first third of the game (aka training), it will not let you get bored. You will be thrown into almost non-stop action until the very end. It has unique location designs, good story and, of course, a cool soundtrack. So i advice to both fans of slashers and the og Devil May Cry to try it.

*If you don't like Dante's appearance you can buy skin pack for him or there're always mods :)

DmC had a lot of unwarranted hate poised against it before it even before release. ‘Fans’ decried the new design, while thrashing the developers for describing the old look in blunt but apt ways. The verdict was in before anyone could get their hands on it, and even when people did, they would only look to reinforce their own idea of what the game is. Scenes meant to be tongue-in-cheek throwbacks and foreshadowing were perceived as slights against the vocal few, while actual flaws went overlooked.

The stylish moves one would expect from Dante are in the game but revamped. Instead of Trickster and Royal Guard, you have affinity evades, Orphion and angel boost. Prop & Shredder are on the scythe Osiris instead of the sword Rebellion. It’s all easy to recognize, just different, and many of the changes are welcome and allows for chaotic free-form combat. Limbo spices up the arenas, environmental hazards that changes and need to be avoided, but can be used against your foes, and enemies may strike allies if manipulated.

The writing isn’t bad, rather it’s the structure of the narrative that brings it down. Both untimely and in excess, cutscenes and platforming sets the pace poorly. Boss battles are constantly interrupted by cinematic flairs. On repeat playthroughs the constant changing of limbo slows down your traversal in your rush to get to the next combat encounter. Special shout-out to the people who designed the intros to M5, M12 and M19: Stub your toes.

It really is one of the best Devil May Cry games. Ninja Theory was ahead of their time in many ways, as shown by the inclusion of their innovations in DMC5 later on.

This Game Is A Masterpiece....

This is my first Devil May Cry game and I don't really have anything bad to say about it, especially at the current sale price.

- The entire cast is amazing in both personality and voicing
- The soundtrack in amazing
- The controls are responsive and feel great
- Combat is extremely satisfying and well executed. Get creative!
- The story is great
- The colour palette is GORGEOUS, especially in 4K
- The game's graphical assets still hold up and are easy to run. Enjoy 4K Ultra/60fps (locked) with ease.

Talk about money well spent!

I wouldn't call myself a veteran, but I think I have gone through the first 4 DMCs enough times to know what I'm talking about when comparing this game to the rest of the main series. I've gone through this game and Vergil's DLC once on console and bought it again for PC because (SUPER hot take) DMC 3 just isn't scratching that action game itch anymore and in the end, I think this is a great game - I daresay even a great DMC game. DmC just never had a chance because Capcom's misguided attempts to increase series appeal in the West wound up turning a lot of fans against it, and at the time Ninja Theory didn't do a lot to reassure everyone. The result was rabid disapproval of what really is a fun game with great combat mechanics and a story that wouldn't win any writer's guild awards but is not all that bad compared to previous titles either. Again, I haven't played through DMC V so this outlook may have changed, but the original series always seemed to favor action and a story centered around some theme (usually family, the power of love and humanity, or something of the like) rather than an intricate plot. DmC keeps the same focus on action and updates the formula with a lot of fresh ideas, but switches that simple storytelling centered around one theme for *slightly* less simple storytelling in a tale that spans a few in-game days, rather than just one day as the previous entries were fond of doing. The gameplay could certainly be improved with minor quality of life changes (which were mostly addressed in the Definitive Edition on console) and the characters/dialogue are cringe (although no more cringe than filling someone's dark soul with light), but in those respects DmC really doesn't do any worse than the main series. It even updates the formula with new combat mechanics and some of the best level design the series has ever seen. My only problems with this game are that a) Vergil wan't cool until the end of his DLC, b) we may never see a sequel that further expands the lore and gives us more Vergil, c) the villain is generic, and d) the definitive edition's improvements aren't on PC. I'd absolutely recommend this game to anyone who's new to the series, or someone who stayed away from this game previously because some DMC elitist told them it was bad. Pick this up on a sale and you'll get more than your money's worth. But maybe consider the DE on console instead

Great level design, never seen a game so cool to look at.
Sadly, marketing made it look so much more cringey than it looks.
Even more sadly, Vergil is ACTUALLY THAT MUCH cringe: seriously, who had the idea to make him into an Hacker guy with a Fedora hat and a Katana? Geez.

Still, 7.5/10.
But little to no replayability.

The Netflix Adaptation of Devil May Cry

It's intriguingly bad, the plot, DMC started with a bad plot, sure, but it had heart, well, at least the 3rd game had a lot of it. It stuck to it's themes, Family, and Responsibility, it's simple but remember, you have to add in a cool action scene between the more thoughtful moments.

DMC4 was a romance, a story about not belonging and finding your family. It was a bit muddy granted, but it was there.

This is where, plotwise, DmC fails. It's about government. Ok, but, when you don't care much about the characters, or they come off as unlikable, you can't expect us to care now, can you? I find it fascinating in a bad adaptation way, that's my spin on it, it took the core and added some ''real world'' stuff in it, and for that, I can't help but think it's kinda fascinating, but it doesn't erase how bad the dialogue and characterization is.

Not only that, I never see anyone talk about the lack of action in it's cutscenes. Dante clashes its sword ONCE in a cutscene, in the end, in an awkward way. There is no action in the story, there is action in the game, yes, but not the story. The kinetic energy the DMC games story has is none to be found, instead, it's a Mr. Robot-ish drama. This came before Mr. Robot tho'. Probably I don't know.

Gameplaywise, it's easy, simple, but very very fun. DMCV took a lot from this game, and it was for the better that the game was accessible but challenging a perfect mix.

Why do I recommend it? It's weird, it's a weirdo game, it doesn't fit in, and it's so bad that it's kinda good, and in a world where DMCV exists, and it was so much better because this one could test some new ideas? This is neat.

I can't help but want the grittier edgier version of the game from the reveal trailer, I wish this went as far as possible but they slowly shaped it closer to the game it's rebooting from, and it's much less unique for that.

This is quite a fun game. I know the nay-sayers will say that it's not a proper Devil May Cry game because it's not developed by Capcom, but if you give it a chance, the combat is really fun, and the story is quite good. The main game will take around 10 hours to beat, but then there are also challenge modes, and if you get the Virgil's Downfall DLC, that's an extra 2 hours of story plus challenge modes. Can get it on sale a lot now I assume, as it's an older game. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I highly recommend! :)

Although I'm not a big fan of hack and slash games, I have to admit that I found DmC to be a great game, better than I expected to be honest.

Its main virtue is that it's fun; its gameplay, with a considerable amount of combos, makes the combat very enjoyable. On top of that, it has good graphics, with a very diverse colour palette, an outstanding soundtrack and voice acting, and an interesting story.

It is undoubtedly a great exponent of the genre, and if you are a fan of it, you will like DmC for sure.

I had sort of low expectations for this and was pretty surprised how well it played. Combat was fun and satisfying once the combos start flowing. Boss fights were weak.
They did my boy Vergil dirty with that silly faceoff at the end.
If you've played the others and enjoyed them, you might as well pick this one up too.

Perfect game for relaxing.
Its my first part of DmC. I am not a HUGE fan of this anthology but this part is FANTASTIC.
I really dont understand why people hate dantes design and i am pretty sure his design in this part is much better that in other games, anyway the game is perfect: Normal graphics, perfect soundtracks to slice your opponents and good charackters

The infamous DmC, despite the hate it got from the fandom it is a pretty good game. Gameplay, design and music works really well here. Characters and story are just ok. However, I completed 100% both the original and definitive edition and I gotta say, if you have a choice pick the latter. Definitive edition improves the exprience in the terms of content and more importantly gameplay.

I love this game. I own it on several consoles and since it was on sale I decided to get it for PC. I have an RTX 2070 GPU and a Ryzen 7 2700X, neither of which are a flex any longer, and I can run the game on ULTRA with everything ON and my GPU stays on 0%! It must be a BUG of some kind but I haven't found anything about it online. The GPU temp barely makes it to 60 degress and the CPU stays in the 40s. That's also fullscreen in 4K.
The game looks AMAZING, even in the cutscenes which typically look like crap in older games. (See OG God of War HD)
I haven't played on PC that much at this point but I have played for HOURS on consoles. I have a feeling this will be my favorite way of playing DMC.

This is truly a dime, hidden in a bunch of 'antique' Capcom games. It's pretty fun although the graphics is kinda crappy, but it doesn't change the fact that this game is still stunning today!

Fabulous combat experience and mountains of combos

Although DMC is not made by Capcom itself, it is absolutely competent to have the name 'Devil May Cry'.Why?Because it's freaking epic!I could say Ninja Theory tried their best to make the game compatible with the original Devil may cry franchise, and they did make it.The combat is fantastic, in which you can kick ur foes' asses by many ways. After finessing all the skills, you could easily give out sets of combos:Strike the enemy to the air and then cut it with fancy devil ax, overdrive enemies in queue and blow them away with the ultimate glitzy 'Revenant' shotgun...Tbh, the combat in DMC is mind-blowing!What's more, not like in devil may cry 4, which has invisible air barrier around the arena, DMC provides you with more amazing fighting experience--you can beat ur enemy out of the arena in air!

So so story and bad character development

This is not a story happened in normal Devil may cry universe.Instead, it is an alternative reality, where Dante and Vergil have a mixed parentage of devil and angel. Not like his counterpart in the main universe, this Dante is like an edge teenager but with a kind heart--His hair style and outfits all show that he is handsome in a raffish kind of way. However, the story is not so attractive--A wondering Dante who was seeking for his roots is found by a girl who told him there are a bunch of devil crackheads wanting to kill him.And he ran and ran and met his bro--Vergil, a slimmer one who was the head of an anti-devil cult called 'The order'.And then they fight devils together blah blah blah. But, there's almost no meaningful conversation between NPCs and Dante, even his brother never talk about something useful to him. Then at the end of the story, Vergil told you that he wanted greater POWER from devil, but Dante didn't agree. So they fought against each other and had a very shitty combat as the last combat of the whole game.At the last, Dante was about to slay his own bro but got stopped by that girl who was following them all the time but did no shit to help Dante. At the last I still didn't understand why Vergil changed his mind so dramatically, from a right wing who wanna fight devil and save the world to a left wing who want the power of devil.

Anyway, this is a pretty cool game. You can pretty much enjoy the intense combat and replay those missions again and again to get SSS.Also,It's not demanding on the requirement of ur PC, just a normal computer can run this game fluently! At last, for people who don't think it deserve the title 'DMC', just play the game first, I believe some of you may change ur mind!XD

You know what they say about 'Judging a book by its cover' and i feel that holds aptly true for DMC: Devil May Cry. If you are a fan of the original series of devil may cry games you might have given this game a pass due to it not being developed by capcom along with the liberties Ninja Theory took when it came to the story and characters. I know i did for the longest time, and it wasnt until someone i respected vouched for the game that i decided to confront my bias and give the game a go and boy am i glad i did.

If you are fan of the original DMC games i think that you will be right at home with this game. The combat is rewarding and responsive, the level design is excellent and creates some awesome and vibrant set pieces, and the story, while different, I feel is well told and entertaining (if a little heavy on the edginess). Think of this game like being part of a multiverse, there will be characters you recognize from the original series and while the core of what makes them 'them' is still present some changes have been made to their choice of style and how they talk and carry themselves. I for one found it interesting to experience this new 'Dante' and what he was about, and i grew to like him quite a bit by the end of the game. One noticeable thing that has been removed from this game though is the puzzles and metroidvania aspects that were in the other games. I cant recall a single puzzle for DmC Devil May Cry, a lot more emphasis was focused on the combat and navigating the level as per the story dictated, so that may be a pro or a con for you. There are however certain 'challenge rooms' that are hidden throughout most of the levels that you can access if you find a hidden key for the doors, if you finish the challenges you'll be rewarded with items that can increase your overall health or devil trigger gauge.

If you have never played a devil may cry game, i personally think this is the perfect game to start the series with. Even though this is a reboot that has no connection the original devil may cry games, it retains the strongest aspect of Devil May Cry in general, and that is a fun, in-depth combat system. Even if you are not good at action games in general there are plenty of difficulty options to choose from (or challenge yourself with), and the game slowly feeds you enemy after enemy so that you can get accustomed to fighting each threat that comes your way before pitting you against groups of foes. The combo system is quite forgiving in this entry and you'll find yourself able to achieve combo ranks of A - SSS (the highest rank) quite easily, which makes you feel like a badass. As well as you can look past the edginess of Dante and certain aspects of the story, and allow yourself to experiment with the combat system i think you'll have a fun and rewarding time. Also if you are struggling with the difficulty and getting a handle on the combat there is a 'Training mode' that you can select at the main menu that allows you to hone your skills.

Overall i really enjoyed DmC Devil May Cry, im glad i gave it a chance in the first place and i reckon it'll be a reminder for me to go into different entries of certain games with a more open mind. I loved the main story, and the DLC as well, and i will be returning to the game in the near future to slay some more demons.

If i had to give it a score id go with a 8.5 / 10

DMC: Devil May Cry is a supposed reboot of the franchise. Seeing there is a Devil May Cry 5 as the latest entry, it is clear that this reboot is a failure. Historically, for all sorts of reasons, when a Japanese game was handed over to western developers, it usually didn’t end well (not all). This game is not an exception: it is a very good game but did not end up well. From what I see, the only wrongdoing of this game is it is not what the fans wanted.

Surely, if you compared DMC: Devil May Cry with previous games, you could find some drawbacks, but they are hardly the point to hate this game. On the contrary, this game actually fixed many issues of previous games, if not all. Many design choices of this game also influence the latest Devil May Cry 5. Why fans did not like this version is contextual. Publicity before the launch was quite bad, there are also other reasons you can dig up yourself. I won’t go lengthy about them here, nor I truly understand why.

In my view, the greatest improvements this game made are to fix the platformer and simplify the combat mechanics and control scheme. Started from DMC 1, this franchise always has this weird obsession to make platformer, however, platformer is always the worst part of the game. As platformer sessions mostly adopt fixed camera, estimating distance and angle becomes an issue. To make the matter worse, camera angle usually switches midway, causing temporary disorientation that leads to failure. But fundamentally, control of all previous DMC games is just too clunky to be a good platformer.

This game addresses this issue completely: it adopts fully free camera angle (except a few scenes) and overhauls (it was actually built from the ground up) the entire control system to make it way better than any previous games. As a result, platformer finally becomes truly enjoyable: it is fast, responsive and fluid. That gave the developer an opportunity to follow the trend starting from DMC 4 - replacing all Metroidvania-like map exploration with platformer. I like this kind of exploration especially in survival horror, but to be honest, in action game it is not my liking, because exploration is supposed to be slow-paced while action game should be more fast-paced. To me, they don't match each other and therefore I am glad they made such a change.

Also partially benefited from those two improvements, combat is more fluid and friendly to casual gamers. But mainly, it is because of the simplification of combat mechanics and control scheme. From DMC 3, combat mechanics are very similar to a fighting game. Thus, combat is very in-depth, but also very skilled-based. Pro gamers can do some very cool and flashy combos by memorizing those complex button combinations and strictly following the timing, yet casual gamers such as me can only stick to a few simple combos. This game makes those complex combos possible for casual gamers, as the control scheme is much simpler and combat mechanics are more accessible to figure out, while still maintains a fair amount of depth. I get that some diehard fans would complain about those depths are not enough. They get a point and I do appreciate the very in-depth mechanics as they do, but to me and the majority of gamers, it is a good and welcome change. As you can see, the majority of the market are not those who dwell on how to put through flashy combos, but those who just want a good experience.

For me, I enjoyed this game more than any previous games, but it doesn’t mean it is perfect. My first complaint is the camera angle during combat – it doesn’t automatically turn. Quite often I could not see my enemies in combat, as I was busy pressing action buttons and forgot I have to manually adjust the camera towards their direction. It is such a hassle and I often got hit while I was doing it. As a game with heated combats, automatic camera adjustment is a must. The second complaint is the enemy design. There are some color-coded monsters you can only hit with either angelic or demonic weapons, otherwise your attack will be just bounced back. I don’t really like this design because it breaks the flow of combat. Secondly, the developer did not do a good job in boss design. Boss design is actually very important to Devil May Cry – a game with a heavy focus on combat. The news host is good, but other bosses are quite boring. Also, in the fight with the spawn, environmental lighting is too flashy for a fight as I could not perceive incoming attacks timely due to the light pollution level of lighting. There is no humanoid boss as well, except Vergil. It is a universal truth in the DMC games – humanoid boss is always the better boss.

Speaking of Vergil, it leads to my main complaint about the story and also the entire game. The whole story is well structured and reasonable, except the ending which leads to a fight with Vergil. It lacks some serious setup in the story to justify Vergil’s final betrayal to Dante. As far as I am concerned, this betrayal is out of nowhere and completely groundless, to the point I think the developer just wanted to make them fight, no matter how sudden it is. As for the fight itself, it is a ramification of Vergil fight in DMC 3. Not as good as DMC 3, but it is okay. However, I don’t understand why made Dante needs to be in Devil Trigger form to be able to deliver the final hit to Vergil, otherwise all attacks would be blocked by Vergil’s double and Vergil would regenerate. It is certainly more epic to have to use Devil Trigger, but the game never tells you nor gives you any tips that you have to do this, causing quite a confusion that turns the fight into sour.

As said before, the story is fine, it is the characterizing that probably where the major hate came from g. This version of Dante is drastically different from the previous version: all the cockiness is greatly turned down and more subtly (not in language) is added to accommodate the more western and realistic storytelling. He is more immature and inexperienced and the story shows how he outgrew himself and turned into a more mature man. I like this version as well and it doesn’t make sense to me comparing two versions - they bear the same name and share some similar settings, yet fundamentally they are two different persons. I think this character deserves some more fair interpretation and people should drop the comparison.

This game not only runs good but also looks good – it is a very beautiful game and I think the art design is where the later Devil May Cry 5 was inspired most. Unlike previous games that most happen in dark, gothic environments, this game has a good variety of environments. They are aesthetic, colorful and in different color palettes, like a breath of fresh air to ease your fatigue from looking at similar environments too much.

This game took me around 9 hours on Nephilim difficulty (the hardest difficulty at get-go), much shorter than previous games (except DMC 2) due to difficulty. Though Nephilim is a fair difficulty that neither too hard nor too easy, I think Son of Sparta would be the one DMC players really enjoy for being the true equivalent of previous normal difficulty, which unfortunately is locked at get-go. There is also a Vergil DLC taking less than 3 hours on Nephilim. Unlike previous games that Vergil is a playable character, it is a complete campaign showing what happens to Vergil after being defeated by Dante, as a foreshadow of the sequel which unfortunately will never come. Vergil’s fight style shows a lot of restraints, which well fit with his personality. I like this DLC a lot because of this.

Once again, this game is actually very good despite it is not the sequel fans wanted. I played this game a bit many years ago, but only after I played DMC 1 to 4 that I found this game impressive. Whether you are a DMC fan or not, this game deserves a try. And if you decide to do it, don't miss the Vergil DLC.

This is good, Ninja Theory always delivers.

Combat is so much fun with a lot of weapons at your disposal to experiment and get rid of enemies. Levels tend to be small and straight with just a tiny bit of side exploration but overall well designed I suppose.

I didn't like the bosses, they're ridiculously easy, you just dodge a few very well telegraphed attacks and that's it every boss follows the same pattern. Also there's very few of them.

The story and characters, IDK, can't really judge since I'm not a big fan of this franchise and played the old games a little but never finished any of them. They seem ok I guess, although I understand how some fans could not like the new Dante.

Overall a solid hack n slash, I recommend it.

The game looks really great. The visual design of the areas you go through is top notch. Limbo has a saturated feel to it with a lot of vibrant colors that I think are really nice. In particular the Nightclub you go through is a very cool area
That said the design of the levels is subpar. There is exploration of side paths to find upgrades but other than that the levels are fighting areas with straight lines in between
Enemy design is pretty great for the most part
Character designs are okay. Dantes looks like a douche though.
Vergil looks better but his outfit is silly. Kat is odd. In some scenes she looks attractive but in others her face looks retarded.
Boss fights are way too easy. All you do is dodge the telegraphed attacks and occasionally deal damage until the boss falls down

Well 8/10

severely underrated, as someone who has played and completed every single Devil May Cry game multiple times I have to say that even though it isn't on the same level as the later games in the franchise it is far from an awful game.
the biggest problem is the fact that it is labelled as a devil may cry game. if the story changed and was its own property it would be seen as a great game if a bit edgy.

I actually really enjoyed my time with this and had a blast playing DmC Devil May Cry. Yes, the writing is cheesy and Dante is a punk hipster but I felt it made the game more charming rather than annoying. The story is a bit cliche but decent enough for an action game. Where the game absolutely shines though is the actual gameplay with slick combat, insane platforming, killer soundtrack and fantastic level design. The atmosphere and the art style in all the missions were varied and some of the most creative that I've seen.

I would definitely recommend this game but be sure to get the complete pack as you would get the classic Dante outfit and a bonus chapter with Vergil which is decent too.
Badass Simulator 2013 <3
Short version:

Pros:
+ Action-packed
+ Cool visuals
+ Epic soundtrack
+ Challenging
+ Fluid and responsive controls
+ Some weird/epic boss fights

Cons:
- Story is a bit predictable
- DLC is fun but not as compelling

“Long” version:
DMC: Devil May Cry is an action hack ‘n’ slash brought to us by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom.

You play as Dante, a half-demon – half-angel guy who must stop Mundus (the Demon King) with the help of his twin brother Vergil and a human girl called Kat.

The story is a bit predictable – you can see pretty much everything coming from a mile away. There is always something in the way that prevents you from confronting the final boss and you must deal with many other problems first. It is not a bad story, per se, but I would have enjoyed more nuanced characters and a hefty dose of character development for the villains.

Gameplay is outstanding.
Exploration is very forgiving and will not penalize you heavily for mistakes – you can either get damaged from environmental hazards or just fall off the map. Either way, the health you lose is not that noticeable, even on the higher difficulties.
Combat is the other side of gameplay and, man, it is great. You have quite a vast arsenal to choose from and all weapons play differently. You start out with a couple of weapons but steadily unlock more.
Weapons can either be of the “angel” or “demon” variety and some enemies are only vulnerable to a specific type. This spices things up and requires you to change tactics and weapons. I found myself not liking one of the weapons (
Eryx – the demon fists
) but there was another one I could use. You can also use ranged weapons which are usually the best option to keep your combo going, as they usually lack the damage output to dispose of enemies.
The controls are a bit complex at first, as you must memorize the combos and, just as an example, hold a particular key to keep a weapon selected, but once you give it a few tries, you will be slaying demons left and right. It is fluid and responsive.
DMC: Devil May Cry is also sporting a sexy combo/scoring system that rewards mix-ups, speed and not being hit. It is quite challenging to get through fights unscathed but, again, once you get good at it, there is nothing more satisfying.
The enemies are relentless – they usually spawn in groups and are paired up with other types of bad guys. You can, for example, encounter enemies which attack at range while you deal with melee monsters, or a big, slow, powerful demon with smaller, weaker ones that swarm you.
You also get to fight several epic bosses – sure, most of them are kind of gross but they are super creative –
the Succubus boss battle reminded me of that Slurm episode in Futurama! Bob Barbas and Lillith are highlights in terms of creativity
The game is challenging… Really challenging if you are going for some of the more… “exotic” difficulties. But it is never unfair. The enemies telegraph their attacks and it’s usually manageable.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2078441370
Graphics are up next.
The graphics are good but they are carried by the art direction – the clever twists on the environment when you are in Limbo (basically a distorted parallel dimension, full of demons where you do most of the fighting) are really cool. You get to visit a wide number of varied locations and they look very good.
Character models look good too – I am aware most fans of the franchise hate Dante’s new design and I can respect that but, as a DMC layman, I have not played any other game in the franchise (yet) so it did not bother me.
Enemy design is awesome – the demons look amazing. They are twisted and gross. There are also quite a few different types which prevents combat from feeling same-y.

Ok, onto sound.
The soundtrack is bada$$. Sort of like a combination of Killing Floor’s and Payday 2’s soundtrack. Really got me in the mood for demon slaying.
Voice acting is surprisingly good. Some of the dialogue might be just “OK” at times but most actors do a good job.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2082776870
The game has a total of 20 missions and it should take you a considerable amount of time to complete once. If you enjoy going for achievements, there is even more content as you will have to complete the game several times.
You can also get the DLC, Vergil’s Downfall. It is a decent side-story but it lacks the polish and care put into the base game. You do play as a different character though and Vergil has some rad moves, so I would still recommend it on a sale.

DMC: Devil May Cry goes on sale often and I can confidently recommend it if you are looking for an action-packed adventure that offers you a challenge. You do not have to know the characters to play this one, it stands on its own. If you are a die-hard fan of the originals, I still feel like the combat is fluid enough to justify giving this a try.

Final score: 8.5 out of 10.

Fast phased hack and slash game at it's best. Unleash your anger and slash everything to pieces or just hunt for secret areas as you unfold the story.

Allow me to preface this by saying that I'm a huge fan of the Devil May Cry series. I had heard all the hate for this game and decided to buy it out of morbid curiosity as soon as it went on sale seeing as I have a bit of a soft spot for a few other universally hated games and the so-bad-it's-good genre in general. For about the first five chapters or so, this was a solid 3/10 and I was not at all enjoying myself. And then, as time went on, my attitude toward it slowly started to shift. I started having fun and found myself actually becoming immersed in the story instead of constantly pointing out its flaws. And then, before I knew it, I had accidentally become a fan of this game. Oops.

Sure, this is not a good Devil May Cry game. In fact, it has little if anything to do with the original series aside from the title and the names of the main characters. My biggest problem with it was that they tried to make it something it wasn't, shoehorning in DMC lore through cumbersome and unnecessary exposition dumps. If this had been its own thing, it would have been an enjoyable, albeit somewhat generic (at least where the story is concerned) action game that would have gotten decent reviews and then quietly slipped into irrelevance the way so many similar titles have. Where this game took its own creative liberties was where it really shined. One boss fight in particular (not going to spoil which) completely blew me away to the point where it now sits among my favorite boss fights of all time. Many of the gameplay elements are quite unique and are overall very fun and surprisingly polished.

My suggestion going into this game is to appreciate it on its own merit because if you separate it from all the hate it's garnered and from the franchise it tried and failed to become, you will find that there is actually quite a bit of enjoyment to be gleaned here. I almost didn't give it a chance and now, after playing through all of it, I regret that I was so heavily swayed by popular opinion.

I'm not giving this a negative review because this is a bad game or I hate Ninja Theory because it pretty much gave us a poor story and bad characters.
I'm giving it a negative review because while the gameplay has a decent foundation of a good hack and slash, it is ultimately ruined by poor enemy design and also uninteresting gameplay. The gameplay is actually pretty decent. The issue is your arsenal. So when you mix together bad enemy design (including bosses) and a mediocre arsenal, you get what is overall diminishing returns as a game.

As time goes on you get more weapons like usual in a DMC game, but every weapon feels weak and useless and basic combos. 4 normal attacks (or 3 for your one demon weapon) for your main combo, 2 normal attacks, wait, then mash and your obvious juggle move. All of these concepts also carry over into the air pretty much so all your combos feel the same really until you get your secondary angel and demon weapons, and you additional fire arms, but then at that point you're better off using your second angel and first demon weapons because of how they function making these pretty much your go to when not using rebellion, which is the most versatile weapon in the game that the devs have to force you to use your other weapons on coloured enemies, which are horrible and are invincible when not using the right weapon.

Overall this game is just lackluster and not worth your time when you have the other DMC entries which do everything it tries to do better and has a higher skill ceiling and honestly a better control scheme.

I recommend this game only to those who are curious if they'll like it, or why this game is so infamous and experience it themselves.
Otherwise I really felt like I wasted my time giving it a chance. It's not a bad game, and doesn't deserve the hate, but I don't think it deserves my praise either. It laid down some great concepts executed poorly that were added into DMC5. And I think that says something about why this game isn't something that should be forgotten.

Game is alright but this is objectively not a good way to play when DE exists on PS4 and Xbox One. Only buy if you REALLY want to play DmC: DMC and don't have any access to either system.

Examples of missing features & adjustments:
Vergil cannot access Bloody Palance
Colored coded enemies stagger Dante in this game if you attack with the wrong color
Lock On(and by extension, enemy HP markers)
The DMC1 Dante and DMC3 Vergil costumes
Turbo mode
Hardcore mode
Gods Must Die difficulty
Must Style mode
Devil Trigger rework(to make it function more like mainline DMC entries)
All inputs being fully remapable
Tons of bug fixes, balance adjustments, Style ranking changes
A Cutscene in between chapters 15 & 16
Vergin's disgusting trilby is gone in DE!

DmC: DMC: DE is basically a complete rework of the entire game, nearly every aspect of the game has been altered in some way for the better. A better core experience + extra content exclusive to DE makes it a no brainer as to which version of the game you should play.

For my current opinion on DmC so far, controls are very clunky. The lack of lock on harms the game very much. There's quite a bit of jank to it and it's incredibly hard to adjust to after playing mainline DMC titles. Gameplay has potential but that potential isn't realized here.

This game is too god damn good, From story to the combat mechanics. Sucks it not canon, most would probably disagree with me on that one but this game brings a lot to the table. If your a fan of the series or just walked into it blind it will get it hooked on the entire series (If hard, hack and slash, skilled based games are your cup of tea). The voice acting and audio dubbing is great, it makes it feel like what watching a TV show during each cut scene. Which is pretty motivating, to play past what seems at times impossible mission objectives. This game isn't for everyone but if you like goofy, sarcastic protagonist's that kick ass you'll probably love this game.

I don't care what anyone says about DmC. I beat it 3 times on PS3 for a reason. It's the best title in the series (DMC 5 running hot in 2nd place) in my humble opinion. It's an extremely well optimized reboot of an already iconic outstanding series. However, it started to become stale to me with DMC 3 and DMC 4 (the reverse level design when you get control of Dante didn't help) much needed reboot. 90% of Devil May Cry fans hate this Dante but I love him. He's selfish, jaded, confused, loves getting fucked up and loves to fill the void with meaningless sex. The beginning proves that. Dante cares for nothing, or no one. Not even his own life. You see a asshole punk grow bit by bit and it's one HELL of a ride (pun intended). The haircut was a breath of fresh air from the long, blonde Cowabunga haircut from past games. He isn't muscle bound, he's quite slim actually, but he has the strength of ages/demons. Dante looks like a normal metalhead human, almost like he is no different at all...then he's all over the place slicing and shooting fucking demons and succubi alike. The graphics for that time were and still are fantastic, even on old rigs, and the game looks amazing even on Low or Medium settings for the folks struggling with performance issues. I appreciate the slightly more linear feel to the levels as it keeps the flow going and music blasting. There's still plenty of areas to explore, climb, and glide too. The doors that lead to challenges are very well hidden and you might have to return with a certain weapon to get in once you find it. Oh, the Door Keys are also well hidden. You can always backtrack or choose a mission you've already completed to get the rest of the missed goodies. The Combo System is back and better than ever! I can spend a few hours practicing simple to hard to pull off Combos. Chasing that SSS Combo becomes life. There are all kinds of demons and cherub types now, and they all react to certain weapons...or not. Lol. It's evident by their color on a body part, so you can figure out if your weapon will bounce off or do damage. Don't think it makes it easy though, once you're surrounded by mobs of all types you are switching like mad! The Boss fights are difficult until you find the way to really hurt them, or circumvent their attack patterns. There will be dynamic Boss Battle arenas though! DmC is the title that made me better at the series. I'm back to finish up on Steam now. If you didn't acquire this game because of what reviews said then PLEASE, do yourself a huge favor and get DmC! You'll be addicted well before the refund mark of 2 hours.

+ combo practice missions.

Hi. I really like this game as a hack&Slash. I know that DMC got the cold shoulder (at best) from die-hard Devil May Cry fans, but I really prefer this version. It is still the same gameplay (try to finish the arenas in as much style as possible), combining various weapon attacks. But it doesn't have this rediculous anime vibe.
You are still double jumping and floating down defying gravity but no cathedral surfing or what not. So I would prefer a sequel to this to anything new/old Devil may cry .
Cheers

It did learn a lot from DMC but lost much either. If as a new game it's amazing, but not if as a Devil May Cry series.
Fun to play, easier to complete, but still need a lot of practice to be smooth.
Some missions have excellent artistic design.

Totally worth the time and money. Just don't think it of like a part of DMC, think it of like a new game, an excellent doujin, a fantastic fan-game or something... Yes, excellent and fantastic.

The game visuals hold up even in 2020. The problem is the controls of the game, the people who made this game want you to see complex button presses as gameplay. The truth is, that the complex button presses for traversal, does nothing more than cover up bland enemy AI and less than crisp fight animation that is the combat game loop.

What the rest of the devil may cry games do easily, this game struggles with. DMC forces your fingers traverse every part of the controller, for the most basic of terrain traversals. Rather than making the game's input relatively easy, while make the gameplay tests your timing and awareness to maneuver and chain combos in new and interesting way. DMC once you to struggle to hit a combination of buttons quickly to do nothing more than to extend a basic jump. Prior DMC games and five have for superior fluidity in movement with far less buttons to combinations. The results allows DMC 5 to add complexity in encounters, because instead of hesitation on how to move your character, you only hesitation is in where you should move your character. You don't doubt your ability, or input lag, you only debate is whether you are good enough to anticipate the game.

Even without traversal being cumbersome through the positioning of inputs across the controller. Your access to your weaponry comes from holding a Button down, and press this, or holding another button down to press that. DMC tries not to restrict you from combining weapons but creating combos in this game feels slow and clunky.

As compared to Devil May Cry 5 where weapons stand on their own; in DMC the weapons feel as if they were tacked on cause they had to be. The story is fine, and the aesthetics make complete sense. But between the combat and the platforming which are core elements of the game, this offering of DMC does not live up. They spent more time on complicated platforming gimmicks yet didn't add a Lock on targeting button. Just a weird design decision. But with that many negatives from a stellar series I have to say pass on this offering.

HELL YEAH this game is so much fun! I don't even know how I got it I didn't even buy it. Maybe my brother gifted it to me before he died and I just didn't know about it. Heck I didn't think I was such a fan of action games but I decided to give this a try and after playing it longer and longer I started to love it!

Incredible graphics and atmosphere, very dark and nightmarish.

Also skills are introduced slowly so its easy to learn the moves as you get them one by one.

The music is hit and miss, I don't like the neometal music with goofy growly vocals. They sound very silly but at other points the music is dark ambient atmostpheric sounds

Highly recommended and I will probably buy more Devil May Cry games after I beat this.

I loved every bit of DmC. For some reason, i liked this Dante much more and the story of two brothers was bit emotional and hooked me from the beginning. DmC has insanely good combat and combo mechanics. You can create combos however you like and its really fun to execute some long and flashy combos. The weapons are really well designed and DmC makes sure you use every one of them. I don't think anyone can get bored of this game since it offers a lot of new mechanics throughout your progression. Would recommend to buy for sure.

Fanboys of the series will hate this game for the drastic changes, but for anyone who wants to have some awesome hack n slash fun, this game is for you. Combat is fun, combos are so satisfying. Bosses are stupid easy though, they will sometimes glitch out and just stare at you for a while. I for one liked the story, very cliche but mindlessly fun. The new characters totally suck! Dante looks like a meth smoking tweaker.. Vergil has it worse.. fedora.... female character Kat is totally weak. The main boss is a knock-off of Lex luther. I do like the part where you get to beat the shit out of a baby and then watch it get blown to pieces by a sniper rifle.
