Über das Spiel

Painkiller Black Edition includes Painkiller and the expansion pack Battle Out of Hell, featuring 10 additional single-player levels and many new villans.

Gothic Story, Frantic Gameplay. Painkiller is a first-person horror shooter, designed to satisfy a gamer's hunger for intense, fast-paced action. It's an adrenaline addict's nightmare, where hellish monsters swarm in seemingly endless mobs.

Graphically, Painkiller is unmatched. The proprietary PAIN Engine puts out an unbelievably high polygon count, while adding increased texture quality and the latest lighting and shadowing techniques, including soft shadows, DOT3 bump mapping, water reflections, glass simulation, volumetric light and fog, and more. Plug in the Havok 2.0 physics engine, and you get a realistic environment in a totally fantastical setting.

Stranded in a place between Heaven and Hell, your time of judgment is at hand. The Underworld is on the verge of unholy war, and you are but a pawn in the infernal battle. As you fight for your purification, the truths behind the deceptions are revealed.

FEATURES

 • Combo weapons: All weapons come in pairs, with a primary and secondary fire.
 • Morphing: Your unholy pact gives you the power to morph into a powerful possessed creature with every 66 souls collected.
 • Lasting replay value: Painkiller features a standard single player campaign, with additional modes to encourage replay.
 • Physics Engine: Painkiller employs the Havok 2.0 physics engine, allowing for inverse kinematics ("rag-doll physics") and deformable, interactive environments.

 • 14 incredible weapons, including the famous stake-gun, and the mythical Painkiller.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2377823939
Killer - Gameplay

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2377815824
Black - Technik

Honestly, I really want to like this game, but so far I've had 2 runs where I had to stop out of frustration over the level design.

The first time around, it really was just my fault. I was stuck in an arena, thought I'd take a break and never came back.

Second time around though, I got past it the second try, just to end up with a mini-boss that doesn't take damage. And you know what's the solution after the game teaches you to shoot things until they die for 3 levels straight? A puzzle. A really out of the way puzzle that is unreliable as hell, due to the engine, I assume. I cannot fathom how anyone was supposed to figure this out on their own. At that point I just kinda accepted this game has mediocre at best level design and went on to play some other shooter.

5/10 - Screw this, I'm going back to Serious Sam.

Pretty good game. Amazing music and super satisfying gunplay. The weapon variety is great and honestly I didn't want it to end. Play on hard or trauma. Insomnia is much too easy. Battle out of Hell is included in this pack. It's pretty good. Not as good as the main game but still enjoyable enough and a decent continuation of the story and gameplay. Did I mention how good the soundtrack was?

Actually so many differences with other titles of its time, massive game, long interesting story, cool engine, pleasant unique HD graphics and satisfying gun play with different and very unique weapons. A success from a brand new company back in the start of 2000s. I have bought this game in 2006 with two other titles and I can finally finish it now that I had time.

Painkiller hits the ground bunny-hopping in this vehement first chapter of a series that was victim of one of the most tragic declines in video game history. Anyone looking for an intense and challenging FPS need to look no further, Painkiller: Black Edition has all of your fiercest, bloodthirsty desires covered. A titanic deluge of demons eagerly awaits the slaughter at the behest of colossal overlords, rip them to shreds with some of the most ingenious and devastating weapons the genre has to offer. The level designs are teeming with creativity and Gothic charm, taking you through an extensive range of eerie locales, paired with the broad enemy variation, you are always seeing something new and killing something different; an ever-changing experience. A fiery heavy metal soundtrack fills the ambience of each stage with pulsating grooves and riffs, a glorious accompaniment to the titillating violence. The replay value is strong thanks to the simple yet brilliant tarot card system that rewards those most dedicated by granting a substantial advantage when playing on the higher difficulties. Points are subtracted for two facile and unsatisfying boss battles, as well as poorly rendered and boring cutscenes that don't match the tone of the gameplay.

A love letter to FPS fanatics.

If you took all of the charm and challenge away from Serious Sam, replaced them with failed grit and empty-calorie target practice, you get Painkiller. It's been kind of fun (worth at least the $2 I got it for on sale), but it's pretty void of substance so far. It also crashes a lot when trying to load games.

Sometimes enemies will just die and I don't even know why. Sometimes I'll just die and I don't even know why. Sometimes collectibles will fall between cracks that you can't reach, but it'll count that as a missed collectible even though there's nothing you could do about it.

It's a fun distraction for a bit, but there's honestly not much here.

This game is fun. Mowing down rows of enemies is satisfying, the weapons are nice, music is a banger all the time, bosses require some strategy to beat, levels are cool to explore, the story is a bit cheesy but could be worse. If you're a fan of Serious Sam type games, this is for you.

Classic fps action if you like old school shooters in general and or games with a gothic or metal aesthetic you will like this game almost guaranteed. Runs fine for me on windows 10 and 7 although some complain about huge technical issues with this game. Difficulty is just about right overall soundtrack is very good indeed, Level design is of a pretty high standard throughout apart from a few slightly janky sections id still highly recommend this if you enjoy other retro fps games. It isn't what id call unapproachable to people new to that sub genre of shooter either and is deffinately well worth it on sale. 9-9.5/10

Painkiller is fucking amazing, honestly excluding the boss fights it comes pretty close to perfection in my opinion. The whole game is based around an incredibly solid well done core of shooting enemies, feeling very similar to classic doom games and stuff. You can move pretty fast like classic doom, and if you start bunnyhopping you'll move very very fast, just flying around the maps. There's no gun reloading and ammo is fucking everywhere. Enemies are very satisfying to kill, their limbs falling off and blood splattering everywhere. The game is just fun and fast paced, but what puts it above all the other classic first person shooters is just the design and how fucking over the top it is. Everything was designed to be cool and just amazing to use. Why give the player a normal assault rifle when you could give them a gun that shoots shurikens at assault rifle speeds? And what the hell let's also make it shoot electricity. Why give the player a knife or a punch move when you could give them a grappling hook that can fan out into a bunch of blades and becoming a spinning flower of death, that can also detatch itself and pull enemies towards you or bring enemies off of high ledges having their ragdolls smack to the floor? Why have the player run around in the same generic caves over and over when we could have them explore giant cities and castles and palaces taking different architecture from all over the world, going from scary to beautiful? The whole game is just always doing everything it can to make playing it as much fun as possible. It must have taken a fuck ton of work since nearly every level takes place in an entirely new location with entirely new assets and there's like 10 times more types of enemies than what you would see in doom or any other shooter.

Sadly, the boss fights aren't quite as good, and usually just feel like trial and error. The gargoyle boss at the end of world 4 especially sucks since you are basically forced to take a ton of fall damage after every phase and the enviroment is littered with random debris and other crap to get in your way. The bad is tiny compared to everything this game does right, and I would definetly recommend playing it over any AAA game that comes out now.

You play as Daniel, a man who died thirty years ago in a car crash, with his wife. While she went to heaven, Daniel stayed in purgatory due to his past( Atleast Eve says he's there because it has something to do with his past). You have to kill four generals and their soldiers to be sent to heaven.
You explore many different places with a variety of enemies(No, not many different enemies during one level, different enemies in between chapters, this isn't serious sam).

All chapters have enemies which have some connection with them, and are set in different places in different periods of history.
From ancient era to modern era, including: Medieval Europe, Babylon, The crusades, 1800s and a part of modern industry.

After you beat each general, a cutscene appears with Daniels allies who help him track the other generals. side characters are Eve(Yes, the Eve,no I dont know where Adam is), demonic friend who had once saved Daniel from nearly been taken to hell, who claims to be not like other demons(r/notlikeotherdemons), and an angel called Samael who tasked Daniel to hunt the generals down.

Now, if you beat the game on any other difficulty than trauma, you have an extra chapter to complete to see the non-canon ending, in which Daniel is in hell, and starting off the events of expansion called Battle out of hell.
Fifth chapter is also the chapter in which is showcased modern era(Dockyard, Venice).
If you beat the game on Trauma, you'll see the true ending in which Daniel goes to heaven.

Gameplay is similar to games like quake, doom, and serious Sam in which you have to kill a big amounts of enemies. There are five chapters, and most of them are five levels long.

Each level gives you an option to complete a specific task to get a Tarot card. Tarot cards give you a sense of challenge to get them, and sense of reward when you obtain them, as when you get them, and place them in your set, you make the game easier, however, they cost coins to be placed in your set, meaning you have to loot enemies or destroy certain objects in levels to get the coins.

With black edition, you get an expansion with 1 chapter who has 10 levels. it's basically like levels of original game, exsept expansion brings new locations, enemies and two new weapons.

I strongly suggest you don't buy any other painkiller game, exsept this one.
after this game, everything else has been just fan made mods, who cost money to be played, and aren't anything special...

There was a remake/ sequel which an actual dev studio made, only that game has... significant amount of paid dlcs, and levels aren't much different from one another.

I almost forgot, the soundtrack, this game only has one theme. Luckly, it fits the game and you most likely won't get bored while playing the game.

It's in a similar boat as Serious Sam and while I'm not as fond of it as Sam, it's quite fun overall and the guns are unique and wacky. My main problem is that you tend to face like two different kinds of enemies per level and they tend to behave largely the same so it gets pretty samey. Plus some design decisions seem odd like some of the level design forcing you to take fall damage.
The bosses suck major ass though. They're a low point of the game.
Still, in spite of some questionable design decisions, it's generally a fun romp and it's cheap nowadays too.

tl;dr: Good shooter, buy if you wanna play something like DOOM but you have a potato PC like me
Main campaign is a blast, Booh sucks

Played through the main campaign plus battle out of hell dlc on the highest difficulty (Trauma) and it took me almost 29 hours, and that is without getting all tarot cards (unlockables). Gotta say i had fun most of the time.
Maps are usually big and allow for free, fast-paced movement while spamming your shotgun in all directions. Enemy variety is HUGE, i didn't expect so many different things i could shoot at.
Weapons, uhh, there's like 5, then 2 more in Booh anddd, yeah they are really good, all of them have 2 attacks and some even a third which is like a combo. Stake gun is the most fun.
Bosses are kinda aids ngl, they all have weird gimmicks which i'm not a fan of, this is my second most disliked thing in the game. Want to know what i hate the most? Well... *drumroll*
hitscanners, those mfs are everywhere in Booh
Good game but probably wouldn't fly on today's standards. The lack of a map and the confusing compass doesn't help whether I'm supposed to kill an enemy or supposed to be somewhere else. Lack of information on what to do next doesn't help either. It's an old game, yeah, but to be released on the same year as GTA: San Andreas and Half-life 2, it's hard to forgive it just for its age.

It's an ok Serious Sam like horde shooter, the weapons have a great feel and the visual theme is pleasant to the eye. The music is also pretty fitting, though I don't think I ever felt the urge to listen to it outside the game.

Story is eh, vengeance story of a guy who got to hell after a car crush, who wanted to get in touch with his wife. So you go ahead and murder hordes of demons after making a pact, sometimes becoming a demon yourself after getting symbolic 666 souls.

Visuals are getting dated, but they're still pretty ok, most importantly while it's varied, it still feels somewhat consistent in the hell theme. Which is pretty interesting when you get combination of skeletons, ww1 soldiers, biker gangs, cultists, or straight jacket nightmares in mental asylum. Some levels are however more boring than others, a huge military base with runways for planes and also huge and rather empty hangars, not much to look at in a rather lengthy level.

The gameplay is pretty alright, the weapons feel solid, the enemy placements is sometimes actually engaging compared to great amount of flat arenas in serious sam, here you get some variations between corridors, bigger spaces with ranged enemies places in less accessible places, while the rest tries to run at you, and then also its fair amount of the usual flat arenas with swarms. The weapons feel really solid, the stake gun is often remembered from this one, though others like freeze shotguns are also good. There are some additional challenges during levels that provide points to spend on usable perk cards that you choose before a level. You can also just look around for secrets, to get more coins or stock up on ammo, in that regard it's pretty classic approach. It doesn't renovate much, it's not the best experience ever, but it's pretty good.
Some levels are locked behind specific difficulties, which is a weird choice, also in I think BooH there are few last Leningrad levels that were really annoying for me to play, due to amount of hitscan enemies around, and not enough pickup health to compensate, since rushing into hitscan hordes with tanks around is extremely risky by itself. That and some of the less creative levels bring the experience a notch down for me.

I may also have a bit of nostalgia somewhere in the back of my brain, but not to the point where I think it's really a great game, I still consider it just a good, if not a bit repetetive and inconsistently engaging throughout the campaign. It can be dirt cheap often due to its age, and for a few mayhem fueled evenings, it's a rather good choice.

This is seriously one of the very best Doom/Quake like in existence, visuals are superb especially for a 2004 game, it runs incredibly smooth, the music is great, the game is hard but not unfair.

The gameplay is very interesting, at first it looks like a very boring and repetitive uninspired shooter, but if you're willing to experiment you'll soon understand that there are plenty of combos in weapon usage and player movement, creating a deliciously skilled based shooter, only recently challenged by Doom: Eternal in my opinion. It has a bit undercooked but extremely satisfying black tarot system, where you have to complete a challenge in levels to obtain cards, that will serve as powerful spells later in the more challenging levels.

The gameplay loop, while a bit repetitive, is incredibly addicting, especially if you like pure PC games, the game had an Xbox port much later but oh boy it wasn't designed with a controller in mind!! Even the multiplayer was amazing, but sadly died quickly due to poor support from the developer and horrible netcode, one of my biggest grieves..

Anyways, I'm playing this since 2004 and it's always a blast to come back to it once every 2 years, especially now that I have a 144Hz monitor, you can set a framerate limit with setmaxfps in the game's console, put it at 138 if you have a Gsync monitor and you're good to go! It is essential to limit the framerate because otherwise the game can have some glitches. Oh and also fov to set the fov, pretty straightforward.

However the game doesn't have a story, or it has one but it is extremely serviceable, it's a doom like, don't expect a deep story at all. The levels and atmosphere are both incredible though, especially the latest chapters.

Could be a good game but the developers are once again too intelligent for their own good. One needs to play through the game 3 times to even hit all the areas. Some parts can't even effectively be played until after the initial play through because the Tarot Cards are needed to beat or beat in time. Some of the Secret Areas are stupid difficult to get to even on the easier difficulty. Over 30 enemies to learn, which doesn't include the various versions of them. For a casual gamer it is more annoying than it's worth, no matter what the price is.

This game seems to have had potential for becoming an amazing mix of Serious Sam and Doom but turned out to be repetitive mediocrity. As if that were not enough, it crushed every time I tried to load any save after the first day of playing. Steam version just doesn't work properly at least in my case even if I run it as administrator in compability mode for Windows XP in Windows 7...

Fantastic game, a true classic. If you like shooters at all, you owe it to yourself to play this. It's a run and gun shooter like Quake or Doom. You won't be hiding behind knee high walls or waiting for health to regenerate here. It's full of secrets, and each level has a special bonus objective to unlock special powers. It's also one of the first games to feature ragdolls and physics, which make it tremendously entertaining to blow stuff up and watch enemy corpses go flying. It's dirt cheap too these days. Definitely buy this game.

I've beaten Painkiller: Black Edition on Trauma difficulty and I gotta say, this game is not worth your time. Let's start with what makes this game so unpleasant to play.

1. The guns: alt-fire is a cool concept but most of the guns are unsatisfying to use. The stake launcher is too slow and the grenade launcher attachment has even worse range than the shotgun. The minigun rocket launcher is easily the best weapon but for some reason the automatic gun is the alt-fire while the rocket is the main weapon? Shuriken launcher is neat but there's no feedback that shurikens are hitting a foe and the max range before shurikens magically vanish is short, not to mention the lightning alt-fire is a premium melee weapon with its awful range.

2. Horrendous enemy hitboxes: several times I have fired rockets or grenades into oncoming packs of Asylum lunatics or undead soldiers and the projectiles just go through the bodies of my foes. If you want a visible demonstration of this, check out Gman's youtube review of this game.

3. The bosses: easily the worst of what this game has to offer, bosses look uninspired instead of intimidating and provide terrible feedback that you're gunning the crap out of them. The first boss, the Necrogiant, has 2 mechanics where you're battling the camera more than the boss. The fourth boss on trauma difficulty is a particular grievance as the boss consists of you taking near unavoidable fall damage that kills you or heavily wounds you on that difficulty. You can get by this by trial and error to figure out where to stand before he shatters the stadium or by using a Black Tarot that makes you invincible, but for those who wish to challenge themselves by doing a no tarot run (because they heavily trivialize the game), you'll be sorely disappointed. A player shouldn't be looking up youtube tutorials of where to stand to get by a boss mechanic, it should be conveyed clearly to the player and left to the player's skill to outplay.

4. The physics engine: aged horribly, you'll find yourself flinging yourself to the ceiling when trying to pick up gold that various destructables drop, or god forbid you discover a secret that requires platforming to reach. In the expansion pack, there is a segment in level 3 where you have to jump on trampoline platforms to proceed and it's easily the hardest part of the entire expansion due to how atrocious the physics engine is. Jumps are more of a coin toss than you going where you think you'll go.

5. For some reason if you play on Trauma difficulty you cannot even fight the final boss of the game. You have to mod the game or start a new file on a lower difficulty if you want to take on Lucifer, and with trauma already being a cakewalk, this is definitely a letdown for folks looking for a challenge.

I will say that the varied enemy compositions, environment and the banger soundtrack are big positives, but they do not provide enough from the numerous factors that already detract from this experience.

Painkiller Black edition
Interesting Story that is not hard to understand (no spoilers)
Gameplay is fun there No reloading no Sprinting you gonna be bunny jumping a lot xd you find a lot of secret area which is well hidden you can collect gold treasure and you can find some in pots, exploding barrels chest, and when you collect 66 souls you will have rage mode on only for a short period of time which was nice to have if there too many enemies
The Graphics are very nice varied environments volumetric light and fog still looks great not bad for a 2004 game
It got better ragdoll physics when you shoot enemies body parts fly everywhere which was fun killing large numbers of demons
Demons are very different, with new enemies in almost every level and each level will get harder sometimes enemies will be much stronger at some point in the game there are five bosses in each levels
Each levels are different it has a castles, monasteries, an opera house, Venice, graveyards, and many more it has the most stunning architectural level design i ever seen
Soundtrack was bloody awesome the sound of Heavy metal is so satisfying while killing demons
Weapons has most unique design and each of these weapons has an alternate fire and has projectile that does different sizable damage to enemies depends on the weapons you are using there are only 14 weapons
Completing each level with a challenge which results in a player getting tarot card a rare bonus abilities each equipped card provides unique abilities for a small amount of time, like powered up guns or slow motion you have to buy them with gold
It has another dlc gets much better later in the game

Cons
It sometimes crashes when i restart some checkpoints
Some Boss fights dont explain how to kill them and not even a hint and even die quickly in some levels
There are hidden secrets in the game but there like no other way to get it sometimes secrets treasure are not good in some levels
you have to download Gamespy but it has been shutdown a long time ago so no point playing the multiplayer
Enemies can get stuck on walls sometimes
It will take long to find another new weapon in some levels
Played it on hard was not easy

8.4/10 Painkiller 666 Edition
If you like Quake and Doom and even Serious sam i would recommend getting it if you like those type of games

A fun shooter let down by some daft boss fights in the Battle Out Of Hell part of the game. The Sign The Pact part was better. There are some health pickups around the levels but by collecting the souls of beaten enemies you gain a health point for each one. Each level completed can award you a Tarot Card which grants a special ability for later use, to gain the Tarot you need to complete a task which could be killing all enemies, destroying all objects, or finding all secret areas, ammo, or armour. The weapons are varied and all useful at certain times, my favourite the alternate fire on the shotgun freezes most foes so you can then destroy them easily while another can set enemy hordes on fire. Pick this game up in a sale for some shooter fun.

This game right here... it is metal as f**k. In fact, the only way that this game could become even more metal than it already is would be the actual Judas Priest song of the same name. The weapons are crazy, and are very satisfying to use. For example, there's the titular weapon itself, a weedwhacker that also works like a beam gun of sorts. The game's usage of ragdoll physics for the enemies makes it very satisfying to kill them. The music only makes it better. So yeah, if you like stuff like Doom, buy this game.

Aged like a fine wine, Painkiller proves that even after all these years it still remains the pinnacle of old-school FPS and stands tall among the best the genre has to offer. Its creative blend of horror and fast-paced action manages to surprise with every step (read: bunnyhop) of the way. And along with its imaginative enemy design and over-the-top physics (that extend from the ragdolls to the environments themselves) ensures that every level and enemy encounter feels distinct and fresh.

That's not to say the game is without issues as not even the latest unofficial fan patch could prevent numerous bugs and crashes, however these are only mild annoyances as both the main game and Battle Out of Hell expansion run and play like a dream.

If you're a fan of the recent new-wave of retro inspired shooters then Painkiller serves as a perfect appetizer to whatever main course is served up!

Painkiller was an early entry into the frantic combat game genre. Bunny hopping while placing rockets, shurikens and other clever instruments of death dispatching other-worldly creatures. The soundtrack has a heavy metal feel which heightens the tension of turning enemies into giblets. It was originally released in 2004 so performance can sometimes be an issue. Whoever conceived the idea of what hell demons should look like was imaginative. Warped, but imaginative.

The game is mediocre at best, there so much a limit on guns and the enviroment looks so dull and lifeless. Nothing draws out or seeks attention to the player. It's one of those games you buy it and go through it only once.I also don't like how you can kill yourself for having explosions near you. It's terrible, for example if you want to kill a bunch of enemies near you without using a single target weapon. You are likely to die since you take damage from your own explosions. It's dumb and absurd for a video game to do that.

Painkiller: A lesson in hate playing.

Episode 1: Fun. It's pretty fun. Painkiller is a little simple but shooting feels decent and the weapons are fine. Started on Nightmare because of course... I'm a gamer after all. Level design isn't anything special but the arenas are at least unique enough to stand out, the bosses were a little confusing but it's nothing that would break the game. Hey, I even learned to bunny-hop which is way faster than regular movement, you can even hop off enemies with the right timing. It's cool. Music's a little annoying though.

Episode 2: It's neat that the level themes are so varied and the enemy design goes along with it, the arenas and enemy moves are getting a little repetitive, though. the shuriken weapon feels a little like a peashooter but ah, I'll let it slide. Replaced the music because all the music files are MP3's and can just be switched out without that much hassle, doesn't help that the game crashed 3 times in the boss level but I'm still having fun, right?

Episode 3: Haven't I been here before? Sure the level themes look different but all the actual level design is just flat plains with minor spots of elevation, got really excited when I found the rocket launcher/chain gun but man the chain gun feels so weak, accidentally forgot to switch one of the music tracks, forgot how repetitive the soundtrack was. Softlocked 4 times, meaning I had to restart the level, I think I hate this game.

Episode 4: no more, I cannot stand this game anymore. I kept going because at least it was funny at first. Now it's just the same enemies and the same levels and the same weapons over and over and over again with a palette swap. Was told Nightmare was the intended difficulty. They were wrong. Weapons feel so weak and are drowned out by the awful soundmixing, enemies run at you in a straight line over and over, the enemies look different but there are like 2 different enemy types pasted over every model, it's either slow run and close range hit or long range stand still and be annoying. I haven't even had the satisfaction of learning anything new that would at least imply there was anything interesting going on in the gameplay, I learned the bunny-hop and that was it, I'd learned everything I needed to. I was trying to put up with it but I can't. As of right now I am writing this in a state of disbelief that a game like this can exist and is supposedly good. It feels like one of those fake games you see in Crime Shows with an episode about how a video game caused violence. I'm done. No More.

I hate this game. Do not buy this game no matter what anyone tells you.

I mainly bought this because Yathzee from Zero Punctuation liked it so much. Having played it now, I can't really tell why though. The weapons, although cool in concept, felt underpowered and fighting wave after wave of enemies that all display a similar attack pattern far outstayed its welcome.

Fun old school shooter with super unfun boss fights. Just turn on god mode, beat the boss, and keep on playing the fun part. Crashed quite a few times for me but was able to fix most of them with compatibility mode. Around a 9 hour playthrough so it's pretty long for first time players. Guns are fun to use and the ragdoll is top tier.

Painkiller : Black Edition
Release Date: April 12, 2004

Strengths:
-Interesting campaign and story
-Excellent music and level design
-Excellent graphics for its time and still hold up
-Challenging fights with large hordes of demons especially in the nightmare mode
-Large number of weapons with dual fire option for every weapon
-Great diversity in enemies and bosses

Limitations:
-Gameplay is just shoot, shoot, shoot...reload...shoot, shoot, shoot..., and is highly repetitive.
-Dead Multiplayer

Conclusion:
Painkiller was launched in 2004 and probably had the best graphics at the time for a FPS game. I completed this game’s non-steam version. The gameplay is simple and fast. You confront large hordes of enemies (demons or zombies) and have to survive each wave to proceed to next stage. The most distinguishable aspect of the game is its superb graphics (that still hold up), background rock music and weapons. Each level is beautiful and carefully designed keeping the story and atmosphere in view. There are a large roster of weapons, with each weapon having two fire modes and even more weapons added with the expansion pack “Battle out of Hell” which is included in the “Black” edition of the game. You can play both the original “Painkiller” and “Battle out of Hell” campaigns in the Black Edition. You also have access to tarot cards that provide you bonuses to improve your survivability in difficult game modes. This game is one of the few games that reached FPS excellence with immersive gameplay, legendary boss fights and well-knit story. The game is all about your reflexes and reaction time. You have to kill lots of monsters and kill them fast. This gets very challenging if you set the game at top difficulty mode. It’s repetitive, yes, but different level design, good graphics, different enemies and large number of weapons make it interesting to play. It’s one of those games that entertain you when you are bored and just want to shoot the heck out of something . It’s online multiplayer is dead now, but you can probably play it over LAN if you want to. But it’s still worth purchasing because of its great single player campaign. Just take the pill !

Graphics: 8/10 , 10/10 for 2004
Gameplay: 9/10
Replayability: 9/10
Story: 8/10
Sound: 8/10
Level Design: 8/10

Overall rating is 8.3/10, 8.7/10 for 2004
