Nidhogg is the epic award-winning fencing tug-of-war, full of graceful acrobatics and clumsy stabs. IRL yelling and excitement may occur, in this ultimate two-player showdown of fast-paced fencing and melee attacks.

Beware, advantages in Nidhogg are often fleeting, as new opponents continually spawn in your way. Use a variety of fencing maneuvers while armed -- lunges, parries, and even dirty tricks like throwing your sword. If swordless, press forward with punches, sweep kicks, dive kicks, rolls, and wall jumps.

The combat arena stretches in both directions, although besting an opponent only gains you ground. Matches aren?t won or lost with a single kill, but with a series of kills granting you right-of-way to run/fight/flee to your own goal-zone.

Each arena holds different strategic formations and chokepoints to use to your advantage. Until you reach your goal-zone, anything is possible. Only one thing is certain in Nidhogg? the only way to win is to outwit your opponent. En Garde!

Spiele müssen nicht immer die beste Grafik oder Tonnen an Inhalt liefern um unterhaltsam zu sein. Nidhogg bietet 4 unterschiedliche Levels, eine sehr simple Kampfmechanik und: Jede Menge Adrenalin und Spaß, wenn man sich mit einem Freund battlet und hysterisch lachend seinem fliegenden Degen entflieht, um sich schlussendlich siegreich dem Maul eines riesigen Wurms hinzugeben.

Lustiges kleines Fechtspiel! Nur ein bisschen zu teuer, aber in einen Sale wo es nur €3-€5 kostet kann man ohne zu zögern zuschlagen. Oder man holt sich gleich den zweiten Teil.

Beautiful, simple two player fun. Suitable for keyboard and gamepad alike. Steam Remote Play is wonderful for this game.
I love the old school pixel graphics. If you don't then maybe Nidhogg 2 is more to your taste.

More depth to the combat than I thought from a first glance, always counters to spamming strategies, and a lot of delicate adjustments to truly hone your skills -- having said that, I've barely played 20 minutes.

Great game on other platforms but the controller config on PC sucks. Unable to use any multiplayer controller configuration besides everyone crowding around a single keyboard. Everytime I try and connect a controller the controller controls both players and the control configs do not let you designate 1 player as keyboard and 1 player as a controller.

WHAT COMES WITH THIS GAME:
Campaign:
The campaign is made up of 17 levels where you battle A.I's. The map will rotate between the 4 maps. the difficulty gets harder but after about the halfway point becomes unnoticeable.
Multiplayer:
You can play in offline and online. Offline can be with controllers or 2 people using the keyboard or a combination of the 2. Online is not recommended because no one really uses it so make sure to have someone playing with you.
Maps:
There are 4 maps to choose from. Castle, Mines, Wild, and Clouds. Each with their own respective songs. In each map there is the middle area, and 3 side areas on both side.
Tournament Mode:
This mode is only offline but will rotate between each set of 2 players in brackets. You can play this mode with up to 8 people.
Custom Settings:
In normal matches and in Tournament Mode you can edit certain aspect of the game in Variants
Last words, this game is really fun but mostly if you have people to play with. Sadly they don't have a soundtrack you can buy which I totally would because the cloud song is so heartwarming.

Booted it up for the first time to engage someone 10 years my junior in a viscous fight to the death. Turned out to be more than one fight to the death, more like 200 in the span of 30 minutes. It was glorious.

Fast-paced, no-nonsense 1 on 1 combat. Fun in single player, more fun with friends.

Nidhogg is a fighting game designed around fast paced, yet simple combat. There are no combos or special moves, just swords and fencing. There are a handful of strategies you can employ, but they are all easy to grasp for new players. Nidhogg is also a game that allows players of different skill levels to still have fun together. This is because being “good” at Nidhogg requires you to adopt the same combat style as your opponent. If your opponent is bad at the game and just tries to jump around and stab wildly, you are forced to play like them to win. If your opponent tries to fence with you, you can try to beat them with more methodical tactics, but if things start going poorly, such as being disarmed, you can easily devolve into a panic-based strategy where you throw swords or just try to evade their attacks.

Nidhogg is built around fencing as the main combat strategy, which allows you to try to disarm each other by moving your sword up and down. You can also throw your sword and even use your hands as a last resort. It allows combat to start calmly and tactically, yet quickly shift gears into a wild mix of jumping, rolling and throwing. Outside of these tactics, there isn’t much variety in gameplay, but it isn’t necessary; Nidhogg’s combat is perfectly capable of carrying most of the game’s weight. The level design picks up some of the slack, offering a few different locales to play around with. Some offer claustrophobic choke-points where jumping isn’t an option, while others give you wide open expanses with hazards to avoid. Each level has its own theme and style, although there are only a few to choose from.

Nidhogg also has a great aesthetic, with a simple art style complemented by a great soundtrack. Animations look smooth and effortless, giving the brutal combat a contradictory, elegant feel. The soundtrack is varied, but often understated. It rarely commands your attention, but it always fits the moment. It’s not fantastic music on its own, but it complements the game in all the right ways.

My main issue with Nidhogg is a lack of short term replay value. There are a handful of levels to play, and once you play each one, it can feel repetitive to do it again. This isn’t an issue in the long term because the game’s mechanics are polished and enjoyable, but you won’t play this game that much in one sitting, just because of how few levels there are. Still, for a game you can often buy for a few dollars, it’s great for fans of multiplayer fighting games. As long as you know ahead of time that there isn’t a ton of content to play, you’ll most likely get your money’s worth.

Probably one of the best casual fighter games that exist. Great game to play when you just want to have fun with a friend of yours and don't really know what to do. The netcode can be a bit wonky if you're playing this online, but you can somewhat circumvent this by using the steam remote play functionality, something that would've really helped this game before that was a thing.

Steam remote play probably also allows you to do tournament mode online, which isn't something that's normally possible outside of local play, and would mean you could bring more people into the game at once. I've not tried this personally however, and do note that tournament mode doesn't mean 2v2 or anything, it'd simply mean structuring 1v1s in a tournament format so as to get an ultimate winner; but the advantages over simply doing seperate 1v1s online include avoiding the bad netcode and live spectating.

Nidhogg 2 does exist of course, and while that might contain a few more interesting gameplay elements, I'd say the main fundamental difference is stylistic. Personally, I consider this game to be the better looking one, and for this reason I'd prefer to play this one over the rather weird sequel. If you're more interested in core game functionality and can stand the complete shift in artstyle, you'll probably be better off with the sequel.

Nidhogg is a fun little game with a unique art design to play against your friend. I wouldn't spend too much money on it since there isn't much content. Be warned that there can be desyncs from time to time, however most of the time, it works fine. Only get this game if you have a friend to play with.

Great game. It is basically ping pong, but you need to kill or out pass the opponent to get to the next screen.

It took me 35 minutes to beat every opponent (single player campaign – including the rainbow dudes). That makes the game itself short, but well, it was meant to be played multiplayer mainly.

It is so much fun to play this with a friend. My brother and I played Nidhogg 2 first and decided to give Nidhogg 1 a try. It was definitely worth it. Both games are great and entertaining.

The main difference to the second one, is the pixely retrostyle of Nidhogg 1.

Remember the sword battles you'd have with the guardians in Prince of Persia? Well, I can definitely see where Nidhogg got it's inspiration from. Because that's exactly how the premise of the game works. You start off in single player with over a dozen colored guys to duel. Then, you engage the enemy with fencing as your primary method of combat. You can do all sorts of things in dueling them but things can be over in an instant. From engaging the opponent in an exchange of parries to throwing your sword at them to getting down and dirty if both of you have no swords where it's just fisticuffs.

The objective of each duel you'll encounter is to get further until the end, it's a contest of tug of war with fencing. It's an interesting concept for a game and it gets by with it's less is more visual presentation. The animation is smooth with every detail followed by the stances you take to the thrusts of your sword you swing by. Everytime you die, you'll respawn fairly quick but not immediately, only enough where there's a sizable distance between you and the opponent.

There are over 4 modes to choose from leaving you with Story, Tournament, Online and Local.

My problem with the game is that Nidhogg's combat system is just unsatisfying, with things being over too quick. I guess I was comparing the differences between those guard fights and how it's executed in this game. Except I think if Nidhogg was paced to be exactly like the PoP fight style, it'd be much more satisfying to progress if you won a hard fought duel. Instead, you'll just get into constant fights where the end result is either frustrating or forgettable.

It's definitely meant more to play with friends online or local, because the single player experience can be a bit of a bore. I'm really up in the air with this game. I'll personally not recommend it but at the same token, I'll recommend it if someone else gets it on sale.

Nidhogg is a good demonstration on how to do more with less. Battles are quick and furious, animations are smooth, and the combat is simple but provides a lot of depth. Losing a battle quickly respawns your character further back on the screen without much fanfare, so you aren't heavily penalized for your mistakes.

The environments are blurry and pixellated, part of the game's aesthetic, but each has their own particular flavor. I didn't care for the cloud stages, however, as the characters' white swords often blended into the bright background and were hard to see. There's a good example of this in the game's store screenshots.

The game has little to offer beyond its core mechanics. The game has a total of four environments that you fight through, each of them mirrored on either side. Once you have seen all of these, you've effectively seen the entire game. As you get further along in single-player, the AI opponents step up to inhuman levels of reaction times that make finishing all of the stages almost, but not completely impossible.

Unless you're specifically wanting to play this game on local multiplayer (online being particularly subject to latency), I cannot recommend this game at its $9.99 price point as you receive very little content for the expense. It's definitely worth picking up and experiencing from a bundle, however.

My friend allowed me to play his copy via remote play and I was hooked immediately. The frantic, quick and dirty combat plus good music had me hooked.

After purchasing it, the few rounds I have played have been hilarious and caused me to laugh so hard, I couldn't focus on playing the game, which caused me to lose. Seriously, this game reminds me of being a kid and drawing 'stickman battles' on a sheet of paper with my school buddies, but more dynamic.

This game doesn't cost much but does require at least one like minded friend to get into. Worth it!

Clearly one of the best fighting games. It doesn't throw many principles at you. The game is small but very efficient at making you a duelist.

It has an adequate skill ceiling and will put your fencing skills to the test.

I had a lot of fun with my friends and alone. Beautiful maps, cool music and responsive gameplay. It is well worth your money if you like the heat of a duel.

If you want to play fighting games with someone, but that someone is intimidated by traditional fighting games because of all the moves and combos that you need to learn, and you're going to play with that someone locally, then this game is a great alternative and you should check it out.

Anyone can learn to play Nidhogg in about a minute. The controls are simple and everyone dies in one hit. It doesn't have the depth of a normal fighting game, but in return it skips the 'fumbling with execution' phase and goes right to the mindgames (which is the actual fun part).

I only recommend the game if you're not interested in getting Nidhogg 2, and you have a friend or more who's willing to play on occasion.

The game is great, but the lack of online play was an initial downside, however, with Steam Remote play now existing, that issue isn't as bad.
But seeing as Nidhogg 2 basically improves upon the game in multiple ways, this game is no longer worth obtaining aside from just wanting to own it, or nostalgia.

Nidhogg is super fun with friends. You can play in a 1v1 duel style on numerous maps that look very nice. Even by yourself, there is online matchmaking and solo play against bots, with an increasing level of difficulty. Learn some mechanics, stab some friends and enjoy this crazy fun game. YOU WONT REGRET IT!

I've spent a lot of time Playstation-side playing this game, so happy it's on PC as I've made the crossover to this platform. This game will give you hours of fun!

The controls are simple to pick up, and the different variants make it that little extra special.

The only down-side to online play is the desync factor when it comes to time-limit variants, but other than that, it's challenging, it's fun - and an extremely fast paced game.

Fun game that you can get a few hours out of with a friend. It's nothing amazing but with someone you know while talking over voice chat it can be quite enjoyable. I'd recommend it but I'd recommend you wait for a sale to pick it up.
