Okay boring at first but gave it a chance and actually finished it. Now I'm playing a second time because just like Oxenfree, I wanted to see what other decisions I could've make to bear different results. Despite being in Hell and trying to outdrink Satan, it has a good moral story about friendship. Milo and Lola were strangers to me at first, but as time went on pieces of their lives were unveiled, and I realise how these two are inseparable but also sometimes to their detriment. I came to understand and love their friendship by the end of the game. Love the drinking mechanic, different drinks, different dialogue effects, that's genius. Also I can't stop admiring the visuals, the colours, the designs they're just too good, night school studio never disappoints :')

This game was super boring and lame... but after some drinks you start tolerating it, until you actually finish it.

But it's in no way as good as the first one.

It's ... okay? The writing is a bit long-winded, and the actual gameplay is REALLY minimal. Felt less like an adventure and almost more like a visual novel (which is fine, if you're into that sort of thing). It's certainly no Oxenfree.

I've seen a lot of discourse about this game, and I can see where some of it comes from. The issues I had with Oxenfree are still present, and if you go in expecting the same vibe as Oxenfree you may be a bit disappointed.

However, I truly thought that Afterparty was excellent. Great writing, a wonderful, lovable cast of characters, and multiple branches in the story that have me wanting to replay it. A brilliant narrative experience that got deeper than I thought it initially would.
The voice acting is also phenomenal.

Highly recommended.

Oh my gosh, this game was so much fun! Dark, dry humor. No annoying games which required lightning-fast reflexes. The story is hilarious, and listening to the different dialogues among the characters was definitely amusing. There are also different endings to this, I won't give them away, but I think they are very much deserved...! XD

An insufferable marathon of jokes made at your expense. Includes all of the flaws of Oxenfree without any of the narrative structure, purpose, charm, or compelling story. No matter what you do - no matter the ending you get - there is nothing to walk away from. I never cared about any of the other characters besides for Milo and Lola and even when I spent the entire game carefully choosing options to keep them together the game forced them to fight at various points. The mini-games are short, un-repeatable, amount to nothing, and yet determine the outcome of the many hours you put into the other characters. I wish I spent 9 hours doing fractions instead.

Even though I didn't like Oxenfree I decided to play Afterparty as it looked like a game with interesting character, story and mechanics.
What I got was an uninteresting, predictable story, with unfunny jokes and useless extra minigames that are just an obstacle to the narration. I didn't even like the mechanics connected to drinking, and I love Disco Elysium!

I don't think it's worth to spend the money on this game, given the amount of graphical adventure games that are out there and are much more entertaining.

This game was such a disappointment for me. I really anticipated the game, its beautiful visuals, cool music and fun theme really grabbed my interest. Sadly, those are the only aspects I can praise. Gameplay of the game is exhausting, repetitive and boring. I really wanted to play till the end to uncover everything story has to offer, but after almost 6 hours of playing I gave up. Story progression was so slow that it got reduced to walking from one place to another, encountering repetitive minigames from time to time and all that time listening to pretty pointless dialogues. Even choosing dialogue options felt kind of unsignificant.

It's a fun story, but it holds your hand the whole time. While it's not necessarily linear, every time there's a choice you are specifically asked which you want to follow. Graphics are good, the drink/convo mechanism was fun, but the storyline/puzzle maps were just... obvious.

Praise lord Satan

Afterparty is a story driven game from developers who made another amazing game called Oxenfree. Afterparty retains similar gameplay and amazing artstyle.

You end up in hell where you feel like... in hell. Although after some time it seems that it's a pretty fun place to be. People are tortured there for years, decades, eternity. But it's a fun place. There are parties, everyone has their job, some work as bartenders, some work as taxi drivers, some work as torturers and so on.

So after Lola and Milo die they end up in hell and want to go back to the world of living and for that they need to speak to Satan. They venture forth to enter the Satan's party only to realize they need to get seals and then outdrink the Satan. Fun isn't it?

The game is very simple yet extremely fun. You basically walk/run back and forth in a side-scrolling manner. No puzzles like it was in Oxenfree but instead you get mini-games which are really challenging. But those are mainly tied to achievements.
The game is pretty short and has few mini-games. Those are dance and pong games. Dancing mini-game is simple – you must repeat the moves of your competitor which is simply pressing the buttons in the right order after they show on screen. Now in beer-pong you must throw a ball into a cup and if ball gets into a cup that person drinks the cup. Simple but this is actually very challenging.
You'll play these few times.

You need to speak to other characters, do some tasks and travel to different districts of hell. You also can drink, drink a lot, countless of different cocktails to choose from. Drinking opens up new dialogue choices which often involve lots cursing. Oh yeah this is has a lot of cursing, love it. Drinks also may have an effect on mini-games.

The game is full of humor, good humor. Actually the humor is a big part of the game. Did you know that Jesus Christ could be shortened as JC? Yep. Cool. Oh and that line about turtles and titties...i just don't know what to say, i laughed my ass off.

There also are some choices which affect achievements so you'll need to replay the game for those. Although the replayability value isn't great. I wish you would be able to get all the achievements in one playthrough because it feels like a waste of time.

Graphically the game is stunning. Technically nothing impressive but the artstyle is amazing and the graphics look very clean and full of details. All the characters are different, animations are very good and overall the game looks beautiful and makes hell a wonderful place.

Game works in ultrawide with a simple fix. I don't why it doesn't support it out of the box, the game looks beautiful in ultrawide and has no issues.
Performance obviously is great although there are some occasional barely noticeable stutters which most likely are connected to autosaving which happens very often.

Now sound. The soundtrack is good but you'll probably won't remember it. It's great when you hear it but nothing to listen to when not playing the game.
Voice acting on the other hand is is outstanding. Huge thumbs up for getting all these amazing voice actors. I can't describe with word how good it is, you need to hear it. And voice acting plays a huge part in such game. Combined with awesome writing and humor it's simply amazing, you will never want for characters to stop talking.

Overall a very good game for those who are into narrative games and loves humor. Although the game is definitely not for children. Get this on sale at least, it's worth it.

Pros
• Great humor
• Art direction is amazing
• Nice story
• Great characters
• Outstanding voice acting

Cons
• Achievements are annoying

Prior to playing this game, I tried Oxenfree and loved it. Expected so much from this game but it was a let down. The conversations between characters were limited and repetitive. I had the NPC repeat to me the same sentence 10 times when I interacted with her. Limited movements and choices of dialogue without much consequences. A game that encourages you to drink before conversing with others which is horrible. Sometimes you'd have to wait in one corner for the NPC to finish talking before you can walk around? The storyline was boring too. Zero character development and no risk at stake compared to oxenfree. It feels undeveloped. Would not recommend this game no matter how pretty it looks :(

Afterparty is Night School Studio's second graphic adventure game. Like Oxenfree before, the game tells a dark and surreal story using the same gameplay formula, this time involving two college grads who recently died under mysterious circumstances and got a one way ticket to Hell.

Meet Milo and Lola

A fantastic duo of best friends who face eternal damnation. There is only one way to escape from Hell: outdrink the Lord of Darkness himself, Satan. if they succeed, they can safely return to the world of the living. It's just as simple as that. No surprises or big twists around the corner; it's a story that mostly plays by itself. Despite being a game of choices that partially affect the plot and what other characters say about Milo and Lola, there are only two predefined endings. What I feel disapponted about is that there is only one way of interpretation, but you understand that only during the credits.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2684219502

The game is about alcohol and relationships, and how they affect us. It's nothing philosophical and it's always kept funny by clever dialogues and great sense of humor, though there are some jokes that can be only understood by americans and christians (and those who know these two well enough). Milo and Lola are inseparable, but you can only play as one and swap at different times. This way you get to know both, while their subconscious is constantly brought up by a personal demon who torments them every now and then.

A new mechanic is also introduced. Throughout this hell of a journey you will visit many bars and clubs where you can order different types of drinks that change your attitude and expand dialogue options. For instance, you can talk like a pirate, be a cheerful romantic, or just a dirty mobster. It's a nice addition that adds some variation to conversations, but it also feels like a wasted opportunity since it doesn't have much effect on gameplay.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2674722824

Aside from drinking and talking to demons and other condemned humans, there is not much else to do in Hell. A few mini-games (like Beer Pong) are available during some crucial parts of the story, while overall there is a huge lack of interactivity with the level design. From the main menu you can access a Social Network which works exactly like Twitter, except that you can only read other people's tweets, so it feels quite passive.

The Neon Demon

The quest for salvation brings Milo and Lola through different neon-lit districts of the Underworld. If you got yourself at 2am walking on a street filled with closed shops while looking for a bar that is still open, you will get that sense of loneliness. Once you find an open bar, it's gorgeous (and you get to know lot of people), but again, there isn't much to do. I often explored areas that didn't have anything to show, not even a dialogue between random characters, except for a few tweets notifications.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2674721218

Voice Casting is phenomenal and clearly the major reason for feeling so attached to all characters, along with the fun writing and deep characterization. Janina Gavankar, Khoi Dao, Ashley Burch, Dave Fennoy. If these names don't ring any bell to you... well, they should. It's rare to see a cast like this in a small indie game.

Music is a great part of the journey, always following Milo and Lola inside and outside clubs. The mesmerizing soundtrack has been composed by scntfc who previously scored Oxenfree as well, among other titles.

The game runs flawlessly and overall I didn't encounter any issue, except for one time when the camera got stuck in one place and I was forced to quit and reload the save. There are some minor glitches as well, but nothing game breaking.

✅ Pros ❌Cons
• Nice looking visuals • Minor bugs and glitches
• Excellent writing and voice acting • Disappointing ending(s) with only one way of interpretation
• Dialogue options linked to drinks are cool... • ...but don't have other effects on gameplay
• Great soundtrack • The game is only available in English

Verdict: 7.8/10

Afterparty is a charming dark comedy with superb voice acting and a wonderful imaginary. It plays a lot with the sense of freedom, but except for a few moments where you will be asked to do A or B, it's quite linear and after nearly 10 hours I don't feel like playing it again to discover the other routes. The Epic Store deal clearly put a shadow on this game during its full year of exclusivity, but you don't want to miss it if you enjoyed Oxenfree. Just don't expect the same tone and atmosphere.

If you've ever played Oxenfree you know what to expect here. It's basically that but with a different setting. It even has the same virtues and shortcomings. What I liked in oxenfree were the conversations and I disliked everything else. The story seemed interesting at first but got worse the further I got and ended on a low note. The little gameplay that was there I didn't like and there was a LOT of walking and backtracking.
I could just copy past my oxenfree review if I ever wrote one.
Developer Night School Studio is very good in conversations. Oxenfree excelled at it and so does Afterparty. The writing and voiceactors do a good job at being witty but at the same time it feels like a real conversation. This one lacks depth though I think most people will find Afterparty very funny. The jokes didn't really work for me though. Part of it might be that I'm just not into the setting but it's also because the voice actors are speaking too fast and you can't really let anything sink in.
You'll again do a lot of walking around while listening to conversations. One thing I noticed though. When walking to your next objective when you get there the conversation is cut short when you reach your destination. So a character will be in the middle of a sentence and then suddenly it stops and goes to whatever was coming up. It's probably the last sentence so you don't miss much in terms of story but it annoyed the hell out of me (pun intended). It not only breaks immersion but you'll miss parts of the one thing Afterparty excels at: conversation. Oxenfree never had this issue, the parts in between were perfectly timed where the conversation would come to a natural conclusion right before arriving at the destination.
I know I keep comparing the two games but it's difficult not to when they are so similar. I wasn't the biggest fan of their previous game though and this just feels like the same game but just about everything is done less well, even the parts that weren't good to begin with.

Unlike Oxenfree with its intriguing story, Afterpaty is extremely boring.

Visually, it looks great. The idea of going to hell and discovering yet another interpretation of how could it look like is interesting. But a lot of references and jokes are based on stuff that probably only people living in a religious society can fully understand and relate to. Otherwise, the story doesn't work: it's getting more or less good in the final hour, yet the final is crumpled.

Dialogs are terrible. They talk too fast and use too much slang, it was hard to follow even with subtitles.

There are probably two or three minigames that took maybe ten minutes of the total playthrough. Othether than that, I was just running from point A to point B. It's not even a good walking simulator compared to Oxenfree and many other story-driven games.

For some reason, all the voice actors were told to speak quickly, as if they were constantly in the middle of a panic attack. In addition, the main character acts in a drunken voice from the first to the last second. This makes the game annoying and boring, because if you convey anxiety you have to compensate with emotions and there are no emotions. I struggled to finish this game. As I continually found better things to do (including cleaning!), I forced myself to go back and finish it. And that cost me a few hours, as you can see: for a game that lasts 6 hours, I spent over 70 hours trying to escape it.

That said, it is a casual game, almost a walking simulator. There is no challenge, no risk of losing, and the ending is decided in the... ending!

There is a lot of talk but it's fluff. Lots of useless words to fill in the dead time. The impression is that the developers found themselves with a 2-hour game and stretched it a bit to justify the full price.

I really liked the story and the characters. The premise itself is cool as well. Voice acting is straight-up amazing.

However the narrative suffers from pacing issues. There are a lot of silent walks from place to place that really feel like filler. It's not a short game so it downs on you.

Hmm, I guess my rating would be more of a neutral if Steam allowed it. I hate to say it, but this is boring - and not because it's a dialogue focused story game.I loved Oxenfree, and numerous games like this one, but Afterparty is...just kinda hollow. Every area just feels a little bit barren once you look past how nice the visuals are

One of the main features is that you can get various alcoholic drinks and drink from them to unlock new dialogue. All this really does is give you a third option in conversations where your character cracks a sarcastic or jokey response, that is immediately forgotten by everyone else

There are simple minigames thrown in every so often but they come at you unexpectedly and give the player little to no time to practise. Since they're a little bit clunky in controls, I found myself failing them before I really had a chance to try and succeed

The two main characters I actually like quite a lot, although I don't know if the game does a totally amazing job at convincing you that these two are lifelong buddies

There also isn't much of a focus on why these two characters are in hell which felt like a missed opportunity

Very pretty but boring - the story really doesn't go anywhere. Didn't like waiting for drinks or constantly driving in the taxi either. Disappointed cause Oxenfree was good!

Afterparty is like a Beyond Meat burger.
It looks pretty good, great even - but ultimately, it's not satisfying, way too expensive for what you get and, kinda weird.

Gotta be honest, Afterparty was let a big letdown in its writing, performance and gameplay. Big pillars for what makes a game, uh, good.
Oxenfree was a creepy, intriguing mystery with relatable characters and dialogue.
This was written with so many 'natural' ums, ahs, ers and elipses that it all comes out feeling forced as f***, like Netflix boomers trying to write teens. And the world was an interesting concept but just.. kinda too on-rails, too empty.. and I just didn't care? I didn't care to obviously befriend or give a s*** about any character because uh, they're demons or in hell, and I didn't really think the two protags were worth it either.

If you loved Oxenfree, Life is Strange etc, I'd maybe consider this at $5. Otherwise, wait in hope for Oxenfree 2 eh?

Content Warning: This game features a lot of dark and crude humor. There are many mentions of horrific ways to die or be tortured, but none of it is graphic. All nudity is pixelated, but some scenes might make the player uncomfortable. It also makes a mockery of religion (mostly Christian mythology), so if you’d take offense to that, don’t play the game.

As the game description mentions, it’s about two friends – Milo and Lola – ending up in Hell together. They don’t remember how they died. They feel that they don’t belong in Hell, so their journey begins in trying to find a way out. They learn that Satan will release souls from Hell if they can out-drink him in a drinking contest, but of course, it can’t be that easy. Milo and Lola trek all over the wastelands that are Hell for their quest, but also realize some of the mistakes they made in life along the way.

Praises
• Great voice acting. Ashly Burch! <3
• Fun music and sound effects definitely add to the ambiance of the game.
• Striking visuals and environments.
• Low-key psychological analysis of people’s actions combined with philosophical thoughts on what is considered “good” or “bad.”
• Some branching paths, choices, and results.
• Depending on what alcoholic beverage the (in-control) main character is drinking, dialogue options change. That’s neat.
• The two main characters are nice racial representation. Milo is Asian-American (heritage not specified) and Lola is black American.
• Even in Hell, it isn’t cool to be racist.
• You can pet the dog.

Complaints
• Rarely, audio cuts out too early or doesn’t quite sync with the scene, but it wasn’t a big deal.
• Writing inconsistencies. For instance, if you don’t wish to use a comma for addressing people directly, then don’t do it at all. Randomly using it sometimes makes it look like several mistakes rather than a chosen style of writing. So, it could just be several typos throughout the game, if that wasn’t the intention.
• The mini-games can be a bit unfair, especially since the player is thrown into them without any clue on how to play them. The initial directions are there for about a second, and I’m just like, “Uh, wtf am I supposed to be doing?” There should be a way to practice outside the story events. I hate the shot glass stacking one.
• There are moments in the game that put a lot of emphasis on individual responsibility when it comes to issues in the world, especially climate change, but that’s problematic. The one true way to fix the problems of the world is to eliminate capitalism. Climate change? It’s because of capitalism. Profits over environment. Non-stop war? Capitalism. War is profitable. Exploitation? It’s f*cking capitalism. Profits over people. If there’s money to be made by doing something horrible, capitalist opportunists will hop right on that. I’m not saying people should stop recycling or doing good things for their community, but putting the blame and responsibility on the individual for the world’s problems is just downright wrong. Even if every individual person stopped harming the environment, it would put a rather small dent in preventing climate change.

I’d recommend this game to those who liked Oxenfree. It has the exact same sort of gameplay (plus mini-games), but instead of horror, you get dark humor.

I expected something similar to oxenfree and originally this seemed interesting as a concept but.... its misses on all points. The story isnt all that interesting and without that the rest of the game... well its not much of a game is it; It really feels half baked. And even the visuals are VERY underwhelming considering how long they've been making this.
Sadly this was not worth the wait at all.

Was really excited for this, happy i bought it in a sale but i wasnt too sure of the whole point of it? Maybe i am missing something but i found it quite slow with the walking to and from constantly and was a little disappointed in the ending i got. I dont think i will replay it to get anything different (if thats even a thing).

Probably worth it if you like the devs and want to support them as Oxenfree was awesome, this one just lacked something for me.

As a person who really enjoys dialogue based stories that kind of send you into existential dread, I found this game oddly comforting and I enjoy looking back at the conversations written in the game. I came into this with no prior expectations and without playing the studio's previous game, Oxenfree, and I will have to say that its understandable on why this game is a hit-or-miss. I'll start off with the negative things.

For people who enjoy more action filled games or a lot of other things to do to fill in the gaps, I wouldn't say that this is the best game for them as it does sometimes have very long pauses in places and kind of forces you to process everything that's happening in the game. Walking between places can be pretty slow as well. I've seen that there have been some bugs in other people's games, personally mine worked fine on a Macbook Air. I will have to say that there were some spots of dialogue that seemed confusing and out of place and there were certain actions that seemed slightly tedious such as getting the coat to meet a certain someone. There are slight inconsistencies and it would have been nice for a little bit more meaningful conversation in certain things like why Milo and Lola were such close friends in the first place and why they became so codependent on each other.

However, I did find this game incredibly charming. I loved the colours and the art in the game. They were absolutely captivating and I really enjoyed seeing all the little details while walking to the next task. As a person who tends to overthink small phrases and tones in dialogue, the spaces of silence served well for me to marinate in my thoughts as someone would say something bizarre once again and I would get a hefty laugh. I found Milo and Lola to be endearing protagonists and I could see a lot of people I know in them as well as me, which is obviously extra points for relatability. It also brought up a lot of food for thought when I was also away from the game.

I have to bring up that I do have some level of relatability to these characters so I had an easier time connecting with their stories and thoughts, which may be harder for others to grasp. This story isn't about learning who was who or what's right or what's wrong. What I took out of this game was just slight comfort. Comfort knowing that everyone is somewhat a douche in some way and that it just kind of matters if you were there at the right time and place. People get screwed and screw over others and when you follow Milo and Lola, you'll start to feel a certain sadness and grief. As the game continues on, you realise that whatever it is you're going through, it's just another instance of our messy beginnings and endings. It takes a while to digest what this game has to offer to you and that's not for everyone.

So that being said, if you're a person who doesn't like to think a lot and you don't like to spend your time just sitting with a certain feeling, I wouldn't recommend this. BUT, if you are the type of person to be open to just listening to more conversations, looking at amazing art and sitting with a slightly unsettling feeling then yes, I would recommend getting it when its on sale or gifted. These kind of games take patience so if you feel like you wouldn't take the time, please play something else. I highly enjoyed this game but I do have very niche tastes so please treat this game gently and you'll be able to get something out of it.

A fun point-and-click, with replay value for the multiple endings. I'm not sure how much choices matter, but there hast to be at least a few moments where it's not just flavor text. The story is fun, but the voice acting/writing is amazing and it really is the characters that make this game.

I was really excited for this game, but it ultimately disappointed me. The game feels empty, it's just go here talk to this person and go there outdrink that person. There isn't anything that will encourage the player to go further or explore the game. The drinks mechanic has no effect on the story or the dialogue really. It would have been much better as a graphic novel as the video game aspect of it adds nothing to the story or the experience of playing it.

Definitely get it on sale, it's a short game (roughly 6 hours for a playthrough). It's got a decent story, the visuals are good for the genre, and some of the drinking responses can be quite humorous. The mini game mechanics are very difficult however, especially on a controller (so I recommend using a K & B for when they come up, luckily the game seamlessly switches between the two). (Minor Spoiler Ahead) Some people are commenting they don't care for the two main characters but I think that comes down to being unable to completely empathize with being a recent college graduate and how difficult it is to find your career and path forward through life.

Afterparty

Afterparty is an story driven, supernatural game from the creators of Oxenfree.

Story

The player controls Lola and Milo that just found out that they died and now have to endure hell for eternity – except there is a way to escape hell by outdrinking Satan in a drinking competition. This where the best buds decide to give it a shot and face Satan.

Personal Note

When I’ve heard that the creators of Oxenfree made a new game I was very excited to play it, unfortunately they decided to make it Epic exclusive for a certain amount of time. When it finally released on Steam, I waited a bit to just buy it during this year’s summer sale and I have to say that I really enjoyed playing through this game.

The absurdity of finding yourself in hell and the only way to re-enter the world of the living is by winning a drinking contest against Satan is actually quite hilarious.

The story itself is entertaining and interesting and is constantly followed by discissions that seem to matter at least a bit. Just like the previous game from the developers, it follows the 2.5D style and is very conversation heavy.

Rating
Pros
• Nice story and good humor
• Great graphics and aesthetics
• Great soundtrack that fits the vibe
• Good voice acting
• Interesting concept and design

Cons
• Mini games are too easy
• Epic exclusive deal

Conclusion

Now, is Afterparty worth to get? If you like sidescrollers / walking simulators full of conversations with an interesting story that comes with some cool and unique ideas then I would say it’s worth your money – although I would personally wait for a sale since the initial price tag might be a bit high for some people that only plan on doing one playthrough, especially since it only takes roughly 6 hours to complete the game.

This game comes from the developers that made Oxenfree and you can tell that. The dialogues and how the game plays are heavily inspired by their first game and it just fits perfectly, so if you liked their first game you might end up enjoying Afterparty as well.

8.5 / 10

I did a review on Oxenfree and this is more of the same it's a sidescroller with conversations you interact with like Oxenfree but geared more for a party life with the repruccussions of the demons,it a story driven RPG and actually a very good story I'm not going to say much but I do think it's a great game especially if you enjoyed Oxenfree .

note: please read further as I have a second part to this review after completing the game. thanks.

two hours of this just did not do it for me. all of the characters are annoying, nothing feels finished, a lot of it was confusing and just trying to wrap around the controls, and it dragged on heavily. if you want a genuinely good game out of night studio get oxenfree, and oxenfree only.

the story of this game lacked any real motivators to move forward, as i mentioned before the characters often were unbearable to listen to through the two hours i had to experience it. the constant jokes and relatively smooth transition from party to hell heavily nullified the weight of the fact the two characters died. then going to and from locations (and back to the same places repeatedly), as well as generally being confused on where i had to go felt worse than high school.

id say at least one good thing about it are the drinking mechanics. I only did one of the probably many outdrinking minigames, and i enjoyed it for the short time it lasted. that and the effect on dialogue was quite a treat to see new additions to the already great mechanic from oxenfree.

overall though, do not spend your money on this game. it's absolutely not worth it.

edit, after completing one playthrough:

Afterparty still gave me a fun time towards the end. The problems arise with the pacing, as you go back and forth to the same location after getting a diminishing new task to handle each time you had hoped you were at the finale. The story and characters were alright, I ended up liking the main duo towards the end.

I still do not recommend this for its price, the game still has a lot of problems as a game and in the pacing. If you're able to get past that, then you'll likely have a good time.

I love this game. I'm in a current status of patiently waiting for Oxenfree 2. Oxenfree, being one of my favorite games. This had been on my wishlist for sometime and so today I bought and beat it. 6.9 hours and I earned 14 out of 23 achievements, which I gotta say, not too bad for the first playthrough. It was fun too. A definite ride that you could breeze through and relax on a Saturday in your underwear with. The perfect amount of breezy yet challenging. If you shit on a mini game, you can't re-do it, unless you restart to before you played, which I kind of love. I love these stories and getting to make different choices and all of the work NightSchool puts into giving us multiple endings based on various choices. I played Oxenfree 7? times, and I'll probably play AfterParty just as much. Thank you NightSchool! <3

I loved Oxenfree and the idea and aesthetics of this game, but it's just so plain and boring that I couldn't finish it nor care enough for the characters or the story. Everything plays too slow making everything else around it not fun. There's a lot of effort here but it's missing such a key aspect that I cannot recommend unless this is exactly what you're looking for.

I truly believe in this studio though and I'm sure Oxenfree II will be much better. In the meantime, you can play Pinstripe, Tales of the Neon Sea, Still There or Genesis Noir.

This game is more like a movie where the player choose what the main character will say.
I experienced it as a rather slow game, perfect if you want to eat a snack or drink while gaming.
The game is also quite relaxing as you neither can die nor doing anything wrong.
It's good that the game does not take that long to play through.
I can unfortunately not recommend this game gives it 2,5 points out of 5 possible.

The real hell is enduring the dialogue that this game thinks is funny.

If you’re like me and enjoyed Oxenfree because of the premise, the setting, the intriguing mystery and naturalistic dialogue, this game is going to be a hard disappointment because it’s lacking almost all of that. By the time you get past the description of Afterparty, the joke’s already been worn out.

It still shares the same problem Oxenfree had, that is, characters cutting their own dialogue off because you walked past a certain point, and you always miss out on the few lines that are interesting, without fail. Yet surprisingly, when you try to walk away from some of the annoying lines the characters spout, the screen will lock, forcing you to stay and listen to their ceaseless drivel. Other times the dialogue ends way too early, leaving you to stroll along for several minutes in awkward silence. When the only string to your game’s bow IS the dialogue, it’s quite a misstep.

When none of the characters present act like they care, why should you? That’s the major theme to take away from this title. It honestly makes you want to reach through the screen and punch them in the head until they can learn to speak without wrapping everything in 15 layers of irony and snark.

There’s one part where you have to take several elevators up multiple levels in order to get to the top floor, only to have to turn around and return to the bottom, but now there’s an option to jump right to the ground floor, or vice versa if you’re returning. Why wasn’t that a choice from the beginning? Because the game hates you and wants to waste your time with inane banter.

I tuned out during one of the bits where the game tries to make fun of your choices, aside from probably making some writers sad, I don’t think I missed much. And neither will you, if you choose to pass up this irritating test of patience.

Amazing storyline. Much like Oxenfree, Afterparty explores the themes of friendship, loss, and trials in a strange world. It is definitely for a relatively older audience, though it still maintains a light-hearted vibe to it; Its usage of profanity is not excessive, and it sticks to a consistent set of themes regarding individuals going into the world, having graduated college. Ultimately, Afterparty meets all of my expectations. There is something to be said for the controls, but that is easily overlooked with how smoothly the game runs, overall.

Wish it was less linear with more mini-games. The linearity is expected though, considering it's from the same people that made Oxenfree, and I loved that game as much as I love this one. The cast and original ideas of drinks and plot are all great in my opinion. A solid 8/10 from me, points deducted for glitches and bugs throughout the game.

Afterparty is a pretty fun linear side-scroller point and click game with not so subtle cursing in it.
Hell, there is even an achievement for how many times you can get your characters to cuss.

It's odd how some demons in the game seem to act nicer than others. You'd think that Hell would be filled with assholes, but some of them are pretty nice.

Everything goes pretty well until the ending. The ending is so abrupt, like it comes to a screeching halt.
Other than that, it's a pretty good game even though there is no radio demon in sight

I love Oxenfree by the same creators so I figured this one would be similar. It's stylistically somewhat similar but without the key elements that made Oxenfree so special. This time, you play as Milo and Lola, who are inexplicably in hell after dying on their college graduation. They learn that the one way out is by outdrinking Satan. You get to embark on tedious, boring tasks till it's finally time to play two drinking games and either beat him and be alive again, or stay in hell for a bit and then be offered the chance to leave because of some loophole. The game sprinkles in some minor trauma but it doesn't feel nearly as heartfelt as Oxenfree. The characters aren't very likable and are honestly a total bore.

I didn't even get into the glitches! That's a very important part of why I don't recommend it. The game lags at times, making the dialogue take forever and sometimes the characters can't access exits unless you run to the other side of the room and then try again. It's exhausting. The game should take 6-7 hours tops but it somehow took 12 because of this. So I say this as a big Oxenfree fan: do not buy this game. It'll leave you feeling unfulfilled and make you wonder why you wasted $19.99 on it instead of something better.

This game won't reinvent the wheel, but it is definitely a memorable experience and fun throwback to the old LucasArts/Telltale adventure games of old; without all the nonsense moon logic puzzles that plague those games.

Writing is surprisingly good; Its solid joke/character writing is balanced pretty well against it's exploration of cosmic determinism and cynicism. Voice acting is phenomenal across the board; this take on Satan is great.

Performance is good, though some of the animations can be a bit rough and character model clipping is reoccurring. But no crashes and good accessibility options.

Not for everyone; but not a bad game.

Playing this game is uncomfortably close to actually being in hell. And not the sweet heavy metal hell, rather the eternal Monday morning staff meeting hell. You just walk around hell, full of pretty dull art of mild mannered demons, who sometimes are slightly mean or slightly helpful, kind of like softer versions of the people on a Denver city buss. You then get into conversations, where no dialogue choices matter, and the writing is super dull. Occasionally you are handed super uninteresting missions, that also involve talking to people about nothing for a long time.

And I'm not even saying this is not my kind of game, I loved Oxenfree, one of this company's previous games, but this one doesn't hold a candle to that. This one is a water cooler conversation simulator.

Love listening to the dialogue in this one. That's one thing Night Studio always does really well.

I enjoyed my time playing it and the concept of the game is brilliant plus I love the characters but the story definitely could of used some more work on and unfortunately there are some bugs. I consider this game quite short since I finished it in only 2 days 6.4 hrs total personally I would of liked it if they extended the story but that's just my personal opinion but I still love the game and the art style and colours is incredible.

I don't usually write reviews but this is a must-do. Well, I'm a big fun of Night School Studio and this is such a disappointment. The story is okay even tho I haven't finished it yet. So many glitches and bugs, it is just impossible to play. Developers aren't even updating the game.

I was hoping for the oxenfree experience, a tightly written story with interesting characters, art style and a fun world you want to explore... but even though the art direction is great and the drink system has potential, the (main) characters feel like cliches that i just can't connect with, all the objectives feel like chores and besides one puzzle the courage drinks are the only ones you may need. I have to say i'm a little disappointed.

I just have to say it..., it is not as good as Oxenfree. I know every artist wishes their next work is better than previous work, but the story is this games biggest flaw.

I like the premise. One thing is, Lola is a far better character than Milo. In my opinion at least. I just never really wanted to play as him.

I really like the dialogue and conversations in between everything, but in the end.
The story didn't tell me enough about Milo and Lola, I felt a lot was missing.
Also connection between characters was pretty thin.
I think this game should have been twice as long to tell the story it needed to,

I did overall enjoy this game, I'd give it a 6.5/10.

As a side note I got stuck multiple times with bugs that made me restart my save(also some graphical bugs).

After Oxenfree, the devs put themselves in a tricky situation, Oxenfree was REALLY amazing, so the expectactions were high for me.

And sadly, they failed to meet them. The premise, concept, aesthethic, amazing, but the story, the KEY part of it all? Lackluster.

It's not that it's awful or anything, it's just bland.

The pacing and the story itself just don't hook you in, it doesn't leave you wanting more, the world feels full yet empty, with little to do other than walk to point B. This could've been an open world RPG if I'm honest.

I waited what felt like an eternity for this to come out due to the Epic Store exclusivitiy, and I ended up being disappointed in the end.

That's a cool game, but I am disappointed with the story. It is a good idea, but everything is so simple... I wish they at least have side quests with other stories, because the game itself is very simple and straight to the point. I was waiting for this game since the release on Epic, but I'm kinda disappointed about the story.

It's the first game in a while I've been able to sit down and play in one day because it's kept me interested. While there's not too many places you go and visit, for the length of the game it was probably a good call on their part. The places you do go to are beautifully designed and interesting visually.

There is a few small bumps such as characters pausing during conversations until the game loads up the choices which breaks the flow a little and models glitching out/sinking into the ground/snapping back into place but it's nothing that impacts the overall gameplay. Bear in mind that Night School Studio only has 13 full-time employees.

The dialogue is well written and I found myself pausing multiple times just to hear what random NPC's had to say as well as Milo and Lola themselves. While for the most part it's lighthearted and goofy it handles more serious topics and tones (such as their insecurities) well.

Overall fun and engaging, I'm definitely going to do another playthrough :).

EDIT: I think what might of helped Afterparty a little more if their advertisement went a little differently? For a game called Afterparty, you don't really do that much partying in hell. While it didn't bother me personally I can see why people felt a little misguided when they came to play it. Just as a heads up for people really looking forward to getting heavily drunk in hell.

To be honest. I'm kind of disappointed, because it feels like the game hasn't been pushed to it's full potential. I wanted to get to know Milo and Lola more and have more fleshed out side characters. And the areas are gorgeous, but are mostly devoid of content when you try to explore them. And there's never a need to backtrack to discover new things. It's frustrating, because I've seen this studio knock it out of the park with Oxenfree.

Overall I was starting to enjoy myself until it suddenly ended. I just wish it had been longer. Maybe replaying the game will change my mind.

I recommend to anyone who hasn't to play Oxenfree all the way through a couple of times. The new game+ there is wonderful.

As much as I want to recommend this game, I simply can't.

Pros: Looks good. Well animated. Good voice acting and a fun idea for a plot.

Cons: Every mini-game you see in the trailer is used once or twice, not regularly, and with no instructions on controls. Story is over in about 5 hours. The effect you have on the main characters is minimal, even though you are controlling them. There is a point where the two characters get mad at each other and split up, even though I chose every dialog option for defusing the situation - for both of them, but it didn't matter. While it might seem re-playable, I can't say that I would want to, knowing that the majority of the pieces I experienced would likely be the same no matter my choices. Some world building would have been nice, but a character in the game breaks the fourth wall and says they didn't want to do that.

Overall, I really wanted to like it, honest. I loved Oxenfree and wanted another interesting romp like that. I was left with 5 hours of my life gone. Not all bad, but certainly not worth the $16 I paid on sale. There were a lot of places that the game could have been polished, and expanded on. Unfortunately the developers chose not to, even with the game having a year out on other platforms. I would strongly recommend against this game, it is simply not worth what it is being sold for.

I loved Oxenfree which is why I decided to buy this game. Honestly the acting and the graphics are amazing. I do like the side scroll play style too. However thats where it really end for me. The story could've been better. I think the idea of the plot is a good concept, I just don't think the plot was well executed. At times I felt like it was too slow for my taste. And the side conversations are pointless. I would listen to the whole conversation just to get nothing out of it. My choices didn't really seem to affect the story that much either. I think if the developers added more backround story at the beginning and added more meaningful conversations to the main plot would make it better. If I had to rate this game I would say 5/10.

Some pros and cons, but on the whole game boils down to a ~6 hour bar crawl through hell.

Pros: Visually charming, similar to Oxenfree or Night in the Woods in that regard. Voice actors were very good, too.

Cons: Without spoiling anything, the plot is nonsensical. The dialogue was written by somebody who was trying very hard to be witty. The game is short - only about 6 hours - and is very much on rails, not many decisions to make and they don't seem to make much difference anyhow. The mini-games have no preparation or instructions, and aren't always self-explanatory enough.

Overall, it's tough to recommend this game. It's definitely not as charming or well made as Oxenfree was, but if you're *really* a sucker for a quaint side-scrolling jaunt through hell, then this might be a good way to kill an afternoon.

Never played Oxenfree or even watched a play through of it but I saw this game pop up on the featured section of my store page and I had some money left over in my steam wallet, a day of nothing to, and an interest in the concept so I figured why not. Let me tell you I didn't regret a single cent of my purchase. This game captivated me so much I ended up completing one entire run in a single sitting, all 5.3 hours. Due to the decision making and different types of alcohols that can affect your dialogue options at the very minimum this game allows up to three full play throughs. Most dialogue options are given in threes, A, B, or nothing. The dual protagonist method really helps this game a lot especially if you choose the silent dialogue options because normally either Milo or Lola will cover for the other in that event. This game touches very well on some very heavy and serious topics without it feeling like it is saying them to say them. It treats serious issues with respect and integrity. Would highly recommend even if you haven't played Oxenfree.

Excellently written and voice acted, already really enjoying this game. I loved the dialogue system in Oxenfree and I'm glad it returned here. The atmosphere and pacing is quite similar, even though it's a different art style. I have a good feeling about this and will be back playing now.
