Age of Wonders 3 had its issues at the start. But with all the DLCs, (Which you should get btw!) it has become one of my most favourite games of all time. The ambient music is stellar, the gameplay is tricky, but fun once understood - and there is nothing better, than creating friends and their RP characters as enemies, who somehow even act like them in my games. For somebody who doesn't like turn based strategy: bad luck. For everybody else: get this!

Simply the best turnbased strategy game I 've ever played. After more than 3000 hours it is still my number one pick. I play each day with a friend via email (PBEM). Not two games are the same. I love AoW III (much better then Planetfall imho)

I accidentally bought this game twice, once on GoG and once here on steam.

I LOVED AoW I, played it a ton, and this title is superior in every way.

Yet...somehow I don't like it.

I'm not sure why.

My best guess is, games have evolved since then, and while this title looks much better and has more bells and whistles, it really hasn't.

I'm sure many folks will disagree with that, but for me, the first game was such a fun new experience, and of course, as a sequel, this one, well, isn't.

Another problem I may have-and this is all me, is it all seems a bit simple after playing other titles. I know I know, there are the head characters and they impact how many of what you can get. But for whatever reason, it does not really do it for me.

In short, now and then i boot this up, hope to like it, and then...don't.

Recently I was looking for an orcish empire builder and folks recommended this, and it had been so long since i'd played it on GoG I bought it and basically gave it another go and came to the same conclusion.

It's a very pretty, well made game that, for a whatever reason, isn't all that fun to play.

At first I only got this game out of interest for age of wonders 4. Up until this point I had never played any other game in the series, but the developer livestream showcase made me immediately excited. So I decided to buy this game to get me familiarised with the series, plus it was only 7 bucks during a sale.

Though my background in strategy games is mostly limited to the total war series, I ended up enjoying this 4x style of game immensely. And after playing about 35 hours of this game, in the span of 4 days, I am quite convinced that this will become a series that I will play for a long time.

I bought this for a bit of nostalgia from when i used to play AoW 1 when i was younger. But I cannot recommend this to anyone do to issues with the archaic multiplayer connecting that dose not work, even after going through all of the recommended fixes and the server issues to not be able to play my saved campaign game.

I have been playing 4X turn based games for a majority of my gaming years. Age of Wonders brings a different perspective to the world of turn based games as it allows for creative unit management. It's strength lies in the great story told through the campaign, the wide array of options for hero and player customization, and its beautiful in-game art. I believe my favorite part of the game is the unique combat and endless ways to compose an army. Negatives would be a lack-luster AI which has many of the flaws associated with 4X games.

This game is your typical 4x game, but with is being Age of Wonders you have the RTS of controlling your units in battle. Even to this day (2021) I go back and play this every now and then. Lots of customization, and games can be long or short depending on how you want to set them up. Be warned the game can be difficult at times, I've been doing well before and out of nowhere lose to the AI.

Everyone talks about the Civ games, but this series has always been my favorite. So much to love here for fantasy fans. Build up kingdoms, level up heroes, recruit more heroes, abuse magic, dungeon delve for loots. It's utterly perfect in my eyes!

Been playing AOW3 for years and I seem to keep going back as its a different game every single time. Still love to play it after so long as its turn based and I can stop at any moment. Give it a 8 or of 10. Wish they would put out version 4.

Graphics are beautiful. The key for me, though was the leaders and their races. I loved that no one race is OP. They are balanced but unique. Any leader can grow to be the leader of the army, Each leader does start with a class, but your choices alone determine his or her ultimate abilities.

The tactical battles are enjoyable, but the strategic map just doesn't fit my style of game.

Army movement ranges are significantly larger than visual radius, and battles (even sieges) resolve immediately. So a gigantic army can cruise in from deep within the fog of war to lay waste to a city with no opportunity to reinforce beforehand. I really want that Rohirrim moment, where may defenders hold them off until the backup can arrive, but it's not available here. Even just a single turn to prepare for sieges would make this much more enjoyable for me.

In the end, the pace of the combat on the strategic layer is just too rapid for me, so I can't recommend this.

This is a fantasy wargame with city building. I find it to be the closest thing to the venerable, now ancient but classic in the genre, Master of Magic. If you have the good sense to like that game, then you are in the right place. The game can be quite challenging on the harder difficulties, so be warned.

For a game I had seen in an old PC magazine once and never heard about again, I'm mildly astonished I DIDN'T hear about it again. I randomly received this for free and tried it out and it was pretty much exactly the kind of game I was looking for. Combat is satisfying, having units live long enough to become champions makes a huge difference, each class functions a bit differently and has varying strengths and weaknesses. My only real gripe is that it feels like Dreadnought has almost no weaknesses and all strengths, but I haven't fought anyone aggressive enough in the early game I suppose.
Oh and some tooltip brushing up would be nice, for instance there exists a handful of abilities that convert enemy units and of course there are units immune to conversion. But one such ability is named Convert, one is Seduce and another is Dominate. Reasonably, Convert doesn't work on animals for instance, which makes sense if you think about it, but nothing tells you 'targets humanoids only' and some specification on that would be nice.

I've run into a miniscule amount of errors (compared to my uh.. talent.. for finding them) an item disappeared once while I was accepting a reward and the neutral-hostile AI attacked me while I was deciding (causing the event to simply disappear, which is unusual, because it usually draws your attention back to it after the battle.)
I crashed the map editor at one point, though I don't know what caused that, but hasn't happened since.

For getting the game for free, it sure had a massive amount for me to do and I immediately bought the DLC 'cos I just had to know what else they put into the game and I was not disappointed. Each of the races have different stats of course and it feels relatively different to play each.

The AI can be uh... well what you'd expect of an AI at times, a series of 'unfortunate' events, which is especially noticeable when they've chosen halflings. Otherwise, even playing solo is incredibly amusing, the random map generation is amazing and the number of events that can occur keeps the game interesting. (Though random maps also have a funny quirk of sticking hexes of water in the middle of lakes of lava from time to time.)

The game looks great, though I'm not especially picky on graphics, I'm sure if you stare hard enough at it you'll find something wrong (Like Halfling heroes for some reason don't grip their sword and it hovers next to them) but just by how much I've played the game I'm astonished I was given this for free. That said, I did purchase the game for a friend, twice.

Well done turn-based fantasy 4x, 1 part Sid Meier's Civ, one part SSG's Warlords. I would have a tough time deciding if I like this or Fantasy General II better - if you are more interested in fantasy army battles, you might like Fantasy General II better, if you like some light city building, tech building, unit building, and diplomacy, you might like Age of Wonders III better.

A lot of game, I'm only on the second quest of the dragon saga and it's been 50 hours, although I did get it on special. It's much cheaper than Civilization and much more combat focused. It's faster you could say. It's turn-based but also quite intense, not the easiest game.

Excellent 4X game for singleplayer. Nice variety between races and possible to create a custom faction as well. A lovely mix between strategy and battle tactic with lots of different buildings, techs to research, exciting game systems, loot, and upgradable heroes and governors.

However, the AI (independents) turn times on big maps are incredibly long (never seen anything like it in any other game). Expect a lot of tedious waiting. It is also impossible to do anything in multiplayer while your ally is under attack, resulting in even more waiting. Those two things combined make multiplayer a very annoying ordeal.

I was recommended this game by a friend who said it had the charm of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 with better graphics and interface. Unfortunately I have to disagree, like many games of this era it has neither the charm of old school strategy games, nor the glamour of the latest ones, that awkward middle ground ends up leaving little to enjoy.
Honestly it's fine, but I'm not sure which players would enjoy this more than any other similar strategy game out there today. Personally I just went back to Heroes with the Horn of the Abyss fan mod.

fantastic game. civ + endless + xcom and an element of rpg. very detailed grafix. building is a bit simplyfied, but combat is realy fleshed out. most of the time you will be exploring the map and fight mobs for xp and loot for your different heroes. 1 thing however i realy disliked. there is too much rng. in custom games, first off you start with your chosen heroking plus a random normal hero. playing as an elf and getting a goblin hero is kinda meh. then there are your starting spells. everytime different. sometimes you start with a healing spell you normaly would need to unlock 3 other spells before. and sometimes you start with the most useless spells. and the spells you can learn also differ on every begining. the army you start with, you guessed it, also random. you can get lucky and start with a griffinrider, or some cheap infantry. so at the begining of a custom match, you dont only have to hope for a good map layout, but also that you start with the right spells, hero and troops. after the 20th restart it gets a bit frustrating.

No option to disable edge scrolling or to resize the UI (there is an auto-resize option that does a terrible job, so the UI can be resized, just not remotely how you want it). These issues combined make it unnecessarily annoying to play, especially if you're a big screen gamer. Glad it was free or I'd just refund it.

It's like a perfect combination of Heroes of Might and Magic, Civilisation, and Warlords

The happy:
- The hex based combat is great, and there's a lot of tactical potential with how action points work
- The fact you can mash several armies against each other with the adjacent hex rule makes for fun battles with many units, even from more than 2 different players (you can assist your allies this way, which I haven't seen any other turn-based strategy wargame)
- The customisable Leaders! You can make your own characters with different specialisations that determine what skills and spells you'll get to research as the game goes, and that's on top of all the possible class and race combinations!
- The RPG elements of each unit having EXP and getting better as they fight more, not just the heroes
- Craftable magical items/equipment! Where else have you seen that in strategy wargames?! I haven't!
- If you're playing online and the host has DLC, you don't have to own the DLC yourself to enjoy it too

The disappointed:
- Need to register a third party account to play online, and if you don't do it immediately, you need to fiddle with files to get your saves and custom leaders ported from the Guest account
- The Leader customisation could be broader: there are only 6 face types for each race (3 for each sex), and 3 outfit options for each class, not even racial flavour. Now, face type and outfit options aren't the only things you get to select - there are hair styles, skin colours, accessories - but it feels like there's too little of everything. The Crest customisation also has a pretty limited selection of colours
- I really wish I could give names to my units! Since they can grow, I would love to have some extra personal attachment to them, like naming my pair of starting knights Seth and Marcus

Great turn-based strategy game. The amount of details is astonishing, with descriptions of every single unit with great care and a lot of lore. The level of details in the game mechanics is so high, both at the world map and the battles, that the main drawback for me was exactly related to that: turns start to get too long and battles involving several armies may last for an hour. For that reason, I started skipping the manual mode for most battles or sometimes letting the AI move the armies in quick mode, so that I could finish each scenario without taking dozens of hours. For this reason I did not go till the end of the game story. But what I mentioned is not necessarily bad in the game, maybe slow-paced turn-based strategy games are not really my style. It continues to be a extremely well done game, and definitely deserves a thumbs up.

This is my favorite game in this genre, along with Civ4. AoW3 can succinctly be described as Civilization with tactical battles and heroes, less complicated city management, and magic instead of technology.

Tactical battles are a very important part of the game. How skilled you are at the tactical battles, and building and going into the battle with the right troops, has a huge impact on how well you do at the game.

The game has a huge amount of replayability, because each different type of leader and different race gives a whole different feel to how you play the game. Furthermore your leader can specialize in different types of magic, although that tends not to change the game as much as race or leader type.

I only play single-player random maps, so complaints that other people have had about logging in to to play multi-player, or the campaigns, I cannot speak to.

My biggest complaint about the game is that it takes a very long time to play a game, mostly because the tactical battles are pretty time consuming. For that reason, I mostly play small maps. Or a medium map if I feel like a bigger game. The game also has “large” and “extra-large” maps, but whether or not it’s a good idea to play with those map sizes is another story.

If I have a second complaint, it’s battles against enemies that have mind control. Whether one of your units succeeds or fails its saving throw against mind control (which means your unit turns into an enemy unit) totally changes the tide of a close battle, or even a not-so-close battle if your most powerful unit suddenly becomes an enemy unit. I feel like there’s too much luck involved. You can either save the game before fighting such a battle, which is kind of like cheating, or make sure you only go into such fights with units that are immune to mind control.

It’s definitely possible to play the game in such a way that you can play for a long time without meeting the AI players, and then when you meet them they have way more powerful units than you do. This happens if you’re mostly turtling and not expanding fast enough, and the map is too big, and the computer strength is set to too high of a level relative to your skill at playing the game. My advice is to choose game settings that result in a more fun game. There are a huge number of customization options available on a random map.

One of the setup options that have a major impact on the feel of the game is whether you play with only the traditional victory condition of conquest of all the other players, or if you enable Seals and Unity Beacon victories. With the latter enabled, the AI players will capture seals and build Unity Beacons long before you can build multiple stacks of Tier IV units, so the game will be resolved a lot quicker and before all of your lower-tier units become obsolete. (Seals and Unity Beacons are in the expansions and not the base game.)

Game looks great on a 4K monitor! Unfortunately, the game no longer works with Macs because it's 32 bit and Apple, in its wisdom, decided to update MacOS such that all 32-bit apps no longer work.

The game takes hours and doesn't feel fun after you get to a certain point. To continue would be a chore at this point. It has elements that keep you invested but is painfully plane and every run is pretty much the same thing regardless of the race you choose.

It's a mix of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic. That sounded good on paper, and the game is definitely not bad, but it lacks a certain polish, mainly in the UI, and it's too slow. Might be because I played on a large map, but the turns still take much longer than similar games due to the combat system. Unless you autoresolve, of course, but then I feel like there is not too much point to playing this game. Also it feels like the races and classes are not really well balanced. Inflict stun is OP.

I don't like phantasy games or ones with magic and stuff but this game truly breaks that barrier for me. Don't get overwhelmed by the pictures or videos, download the game and give the tutorial a try, you'll absolutely love it, I can assure you that if you love RTS games.

Age of Wonders 3 is one of those games that a person can play for hours and lose track of time. With hours of game play put in, I feel that this game is definitely worth playing. Customizing heroes, battling in a medieval scene, and using real strategy make this game entertaining and thought provoking. The campaign is enjoyable, as well as playing the different scenarios that are in game and in the workshop. I recommend this game to anyone who loves war gaming.

I love this game. Master of Magic style 4X. Combat is fluid, spells are powerful, and there are a LOT of class/race combinations to use. Your heroes can be leveled up to be any style you want.

It is a bit different from some of the earlier Age of Wonders games, in that your leader is better spend walking around and doing things instead of staying in the castle.

Pros

- Excellent animations. I just think the game looks good all-around.
- Exploring the world is fun since there's a big variety of enemies, locations, and treasures to bump into.
- Good empire building simulation. It's more streamlined than bare, which is fine since you can only build one thing at a time from cities.
- Leader appearance customization - you can make them pretty hot.
- Hero customization - Do you want a front-line? An archer? A caster? Someone with army-wide buffs? Also you can give heroes items to give them more stuff to play with, like snowballs or dart guns.
- Based on your leader's class, you have access to class-specific troops like crusaders, succubi, or monster slayers. Very cool.
- Goodie huts and things to do on the map other than beat on AIs.
- No mana/power/research sliders. I'm not a fan of them. Mana generation + storage, research rate, and casting points, are not based on another resources and instead are their own stats.

Neutral

- Picking spots for cities can be kinda tough sometimes since race happiness + proximity to resources is important. It just doesn't feel like there's a 'perfect spot' all the time.
- Class-specific buildings are only good for producing class-specific units. I would have really liked some minor boost like +5 prod, +5 gold, +5 mana, etc. based on class, since it seems more important to build up an economy with default units than build class-specific units. Especially if you have to build more than one (and research it) to get into higher tiers of units.
- Can't terraform mountains/seas to land. Minor thing but I'm a powerful wizard darn it. ????‍♂️

Cons

- Certain monster spawners, if left unchecked, will spawn death stacks and be hard to deal with. You have to overwhelm them with groups or soften them way up with magic before starting a fight. Examples: [spoiler]bone dragons, the huge archon dudes[/spoiler]
- Some cosmic happenings are really difficult. [spoiler]A dragon stole my city once.[/spoiler] It was kinda cool tho.

I love this game. I think the team has moved on to work on Planetfall only, so it is what it is. And it is a lot. Have fun!

It's a different take on the 4x genre, focusing more on exploration and combat.
So anyone that enjoys rpgs and the combat in games like xcom will find this to be an enjoyable change of pace.
Anyone looking for a complicated city building game or civilization game, you will have to keep looking.

Turn based strategy. Entertaining, at the very least. Story was enough for me to not be repulsed by it immediately.

If you like turn based strategy games, but haven't played any Age of Wonders games, you've been missing out. They're a fun franchise, and I recommend giving them a try. This one in particular is an entertaining drop in the bucket. The visuals are easy on the eyes, and the music and voice acting is easy on the ears. The strategy elements are similar to the rest of the series, although having not played in a long time it took me a few minutes to reacquaint myself with the controls.

I got this game on sale, and recommend you do the same.

Great fantasy strategy game. Lots of depth and options. I liked the single player campaigns so much I did them all. The random scenarios are OK, never tried the multi player. The 3D renders for the leaders profiles are a little dated but otherwise I enjoyed the game.

I didn't know this game existed when this was offered for free from steam. A hundred hours later, I have to buy the remaining DLC's because I got hooked with it. This game reminds me on Civilization & Brigandine from PS1. My only gripe is... one more turn & its already 5am damn :steamhappy::steamhappy::steamhappy:

For a while there was the curse of the 3rd.
Lords of the Realm 3, Masters of Orion 3, and this, Age of Wonders 3 - All failures.

This offers nothing that is not inferior to its predecessor, Age of Wonders Shadow Magic.
Which you can get for just over $2 on a good sale.

Paradox insists on 3rd party accounts. 3rd party launchers.
Additionally, after this title, and then the acquisition and destruction of both
Prison Architect, and Knights of Pen and Paper 2 - I blocked Paradox in its entirety.

The magnum opus of a child spawned from the holy union between Sid Meier's Hexagonids (sorry but ew) and HOMM series. It's so damn good. I'm talking about unique classes who play quite differently -yet they're balanced- and none of them are holding back from stomping the hell out of each other. Sorcerers spam AOE spells and can summon one's ex girlfriends (looking at you Eldritch Horror,) Warlords can kill people, Dreadnoughts can kill people with guns, Theocrats are quite good at religious and philosophical arguments -so good that they can convince you to join them-, Druids are, well they are half Sorc and half Warlord if you ask me (and they befriend animals, boost them to the stage of OP etc.,) Necromancers like dead people, and Rogues can go F themselves. And to top it off, it has awesome workshop support. Holy moly do I love AOW3.

10/10 would walk ships on land again. Play as the dreadnought if you agree. They have guns and tanks haha

This game is ok. I was looking for a decent turned based strategy game similar to the Heroes of Might and Magic series. This is pretty close but not quite as good. The back story, artifacts and in game extras are lacking. Like I said, the game is ok especially if you catch it on sale.

Very promising game, but unfortunately the AI is given total omniscience on the strategy map. You will never take the AI by surprise. You will not ambush them or catch their scouts. And whenever you arrive at one of their settlements, they'll have stacks of armies parked there waiting for you. If for some reason they couldn't amass enough troops for the army they know you have, they'll have torched the city and left by the time you arrive.
This carves a huge chunk of fun out of the game, pretty much ruined it for me.

The strategy elements of this game are incredibly slow and generally inconsequential. I'm sure its different later in the game or in multiplayer, but the game is so painfully slow that I wouldn't want it to get any harder simply because failing would be so exhausting.

The story elements of this game are very basic. Like the plot of your first D&D campaign.

So, I'm not sure who this is for. It definitely isn't for me. I'd be happy if it had a riveting story, but if the writing in this game were a book I would have put it down faster than I put down the game. I'd be happy if it had fun strategic gameplay, as I was expecting from my experience with Age of Mythology 20 years ago, but it definitely isn't that.

I can't personally recommend it as its just incredibly boring, but don't let that stop you if you've watched gameplay videos and think it looks entertaining. Just don't expect more in spite of gameplay videos like I did.

Really great game, wish I could play the older ones, but they keep crashing. I know nothing of the campaign as I don't care about it, but the custom games are allot of fun, as my amount of time playing eludes to. Also realy great with mods.

I keep seeing the huge range of units and options, and imagining this huge, deep game and world to explore. It's a lie. The writing is generic trash, and the depth is an illusion. You can either play every little battle and skirmish, which is tedious and slow, or autoresolve, which will screw you over. A broken game with the breadth of an ocean, but the depth of a puddle.

It has some interesting ideas and altogether it works fine, but I can't recommend it for anyone based on the fact that it's not very well designed.

The AI is able to cheese and cheat you in ways that you will never be able to replicate, the Campaign is lackluster and boring, there is no real multiplayer to speak of, and honestly playing solo campaigns against the AI is only ever boring as hell or frustrating beyond reason.

I've had completely impossible moments that confused the hell out of me, where a Single, lone hero took on an entire army and won, despite being unleveled.

Meanwhile you can raise three seperate armies against an AI and when you go to try and take their city they'll just win because reasons. I'm not even joking that's literally what happened to me the last time I tried to take a city from the AI, The Game decided not to let that happen, despite me being overwhelmingly more powerful than the opponent.

To clarify, I was able to defeat the enemies units, but in the end the game told me I had lost, despite having cleared out every enemy unit in the battle.

The worst part I'd have to say is the complete lack of any sort of controls or settings for the AI, There's no difficulty slider, you just have to hope you get lucky.

Age of Wonders 3 is a brilliant tactical war game often mistaken for a fantasy Civ game. While there are certainly strategic decisions to be made on the world level, where Age of Wonders 3 really stands out is its tactical combat. Aside from expanding and crushing your enemy, the means by which you do so is very closely related to how you compose your armies, configure your heroes, and research your spells and technologies. The RPG elements alone breath a ton of replayability into this series.

There's loot in the game, both found (in monster lairs, off enemy heroes, and certain unique building tiles) and crafted (with the right town upgrades). This loot helps you build your heroes as you see fit. There are neutral factions to win over, or purge, and there are plenty of race and class combinations to choose from when creating your nation.

This game is all about the skirmish missions, whether playing solo or with a group of friends. And while it does have a campaign, the true freedom this game affords the player is best found in the custom skirmishes that serve as the bread and butter of this series.

A mix of Civilization with Warlock, it's a turn based 4x with a bit of empire building, role playing and warfare. The setting is standard medieval fantasy, the story is the usual cliche driven narrative of good vs evil with gibberish fantasy names that you won't remember once the narration stops.

But as a strategy game it's serviceable and somewhat interesting. The extra log in / Triumph account needed for multiplayer is obnoxious, but you can just choose guest and play offline if you only want single player campaign mode.

If 4x strategy is your thing and you need another fantasy version of it, you'll probably enjoy this.

It's not quite as high quality as the previous games because they sunk all their attention into lore and looks rather than substance so the game feels a bit naked at times and very repetitive, but it's pretty good and will take up a healthy chunk of your time.

Best to buy it on sale.

Amazingly fun and challenging, it just keeps drawing me back again and again. It's a beautiful, well thought out game that is really enjoyable to play (and addicting). Of the genre, I would say this is my favorite. I would highly recommend it to anybody looking for a good new game!!!

If you're buying this game for the multiplayer, there's a good chance you won't be able to play it. The game told each person from our group that our connection wasn't good enough, which is utter bs not only because we each have a different provider and type of strong internet, but more importantly the port forwarding solution suggested everywhere doesn't work. We tried everything we could think of, and if at some point I figure out how to fix this I'll edit this review with the solution. Right now you can only join games other people (likely strangers) create, and those other people all seem to be from Russia. Which is noteworthy because it sounds like it just doesn't register Europe properly or something.

So currently it's a single player game for me for no reason, and if I was gonna play a 4x for the single player - I'd just play Heroes of Might & Magic 3 again. Which I am.

Great fun, especially on multiplayer. The AI is challenging but doesn't feel impossible. There's a ton of strategies you can utilize, and the amount of variability is awesome. It keeps me on my toes. Highly recommend it.

It is an ok game and if you are a fan of M&M or KB strategy games you will initially find what to like here (especially the differences to those games), however something that is very prevalent in AoW3 is the sense of clunkyness. Whether because of animation, UI or presentation the game has this clunky flow. That combined with several oversights (veterancy vs stronger units, rather uninformative economy etc.) leave AoW3 quite a bit behind the legendary titles in the genre. The mandatory launcher and product registration are also highly unnecessary and questionable.

So while Age Of Wonders III doesn’t really offer much that you can’t get elsewhere from the 4X genre, it feels fresh and distinctive enough – it has been over a decade since the last Age Of Wonders, after all – that strategy fans will have something to get their teeth into all the same. Hopefully next time won’t be quite so far away, and a little more consideration for the city management screen wouldn’t go amiss.

Age of Wonders. I’d say Age of Mixtures. It’s a mix of Civ games meets Warlock – Master of the Arcane with tactical maps of that similar to Fallen Enchantress. You don’t have the fleshed out features compared to your average Civ game, but you don’t have the fast paced combat compared to Warlock either. It fits in the middle with a better campaign than Warlock and the one that doesn’t really exist for Civ.

The combat on the tactical screen goes hand and hand with Fallen Enchantress. You have obstacles to fight past, you can cast spells on your own units or the enemy units, you can flank, AoE damage, etc. Your heroes get to wear items that you can create via forge (certain heroes/campaigns) or finding items throughout the map.

It fits closer to Warlock on spells being cast on cities, units, or on enemy cities/enemy units, but it drags on and on and on like Civ series. I don’t want to sit there on each map for several hours just to see how the campaign goes and then hoping it turns out to be a decent story; if not, I just wasted many hours of my life.

The AI is a bit off the rails even for medium settings. By this I mean if you’re doing your own thing (I’d like to think Medium AI difficulty is casual with some stings attached) and you come back from exploring and you see four armies with tier four units in it then that isn’t medium settings, that’s called AI spamming the best unit in their arsenal and kicking your ass.

I don’t want to play Easy but I don’t want to getting spammed on by top tier units as well. Of course, like most 4X games the AI always gets bonuses. Could you do the same? Of course… with negative income, mana, and population and other aspects of your civilization being hindered.

Honestly, the game isn’t bad and it isn’t great. I’d recommend it being neutral/meh, but since I do enjoy 4X games at times and this wasn’t a bad experience I’d say buy it if you have a niche for another 4X game with a bit more detailed story attached.

Pros:

+Clean graphics – nothing amazing, but nothing ugly either
+Good sounds – no oddities
+Voice acting throughout the campaigns – Intro and story time
+Similar to Warlock on terms of city management
+No crashes, glitches, or lag

Neutral:

-/= Gathering of the many games into one and still feels slow

Cons:

-AI spams only the strongest units on milder settings

Loggin/account system specific to this game is an obnoxious wall preventing you from playing anytime you don't remember your username/password for this one single game.

Ok go ahead and create a new account, but you can't use the email you used last time... great ill just use that email to login and password recovery? nope you need your username to password recovery.
lmao.

Come on people... Who thought this was a good idea?

If you are a fan of strategy games, this is a pretty fun game although it is discouraging at first to get used to but after you learn all the controls and what not its not a bad game

Roam the area around your base and collect loot, upgrade your settlement
Upgrade your army AND GO FIGHT!

maybe it's just me, but I can't understand this game. unit's strong and weakness points are difficult to understand, all factions have the same buildings with only slightly difference, the strategic part is super-tedious with very little variety, campaigns are dull and failed to keep me hooked, each game feels the same to the previous one, UI and general user experience feels sluggish, inconsistent and unpolished. It's a shame because tactical battles are (or rather would have been) quite fun. I can't reccommend it, although I see that someone very into this type of games can enjoy it

it's a combination of warcraft three and Turn-based battles set in a fantasy realm full of goblins, evil humans, bright elven races, and more. Does have a DnD vibe to it because of Attacks of Opportunity in the battles.

Tried it with friends, didn't get far. It truly is a wonder how each turn takes ages in this game. If ANY player is in combat, no actions are allowed for the duration of it, even if the combat has nothing to do with you or the things you were trying to do, even with simultaneous turns on. So basically each turn gets interrupted all the time by the random combats the other players happen to end up in. Maybe it is fine as a singleplayer game, but after this horribly slow multiplayer experience I really don't care enough to try.

Most of my hours played have been Play by Email games with friends. I'm picking it up again during quarantine because of how easy it is to play a turn when working (or not working) at home.

I used to play purely for the fantasy of the whole thing. Looting treasure sites and outfitting your hero with gear is very satisfying. I only really started to really enjoy it after doing strategic combat all the time. But many of my friends have disliked this game for a huge reason; it's PUNISHING. A lot of people want to treat this like Civilisation, but it's not. A single floating unit can take every town you've left undefended (perhaps why Planetfall has inherent defenders). The wrong placement in battle can lead to losing that hero you've been building up for hours. And it sucks to have to build up your army from scratch. But this makes the successes so much better! Did you save your injured unit by casting a well timed spell you'd forgotten about? Did you win tactical combat through sheer strategic genius despite an unfavoured forecast? Did you use stealth to wait until your superior opponent was moving out and attacked their armies while they were divided? Once this happens, you'll love this game.

Or you'll auto resolve combat against three baby spiders and lose it all.
