Really beautiful graphics that create a unique atmosphere. That is completed by a really well done music. Story was interesting and the length was OK as any longer and it might have become boring. Played with Xbox controller and it worked nicely, at times the movement was a bit laggy.

All in all a enjoyable game for couple of night.

I like supporting indie developers and often find many indie games give some of the most unique gaming experiences. I tried to like this one and get through it but found it more of a chore than anything else.

Interesting story-rich adventure game.
Serious subject matter, walking through another person's dreams, to try to help them with overwhelming mental health issues.
Music is quite good, and I love the art style and graphics. Very well done.
The story wanders a bit, and the ending feels a bit too abrupt and a little uneven, but... you are in someone else's dreams, someone who is struggling with overwhelming depression and self-blame.

Very well done for a single dev created game.
My only issues were (1st) thinking the controller support was broken leaving me with keyboard controls only (Turned out my controller was loose in the USB port), and some sluggish controls/input lag on both controller and keyboard. Not terrible for most of the game, but toward the end during a fast platforming section, and a section where you need to run and jump while fighting against wind- yea. That was a pain for me with my arthritic hands. The game will restart you at the beginning of these areas if you fail (no penalty for dying), but having to replay each section a number of times because input did not seem to register was a wee bit annoying.

Other than that- the game is quite an emotional experience, if you have any empathy at all, IMHO. I found it well worth the price.

Explore, explore, explore. Go left and right, wait for scenes to play out. There are a few achievements that are easily missed if you don't. You have 3 save slots, so make saves in slot 2 and 3 at the beginning and middle of the game, so you can load them and not have to play all the way through again, if you miss those achievements. Stick around and watch the fireworks.

Just the minimal platformer/walking sim gameplay but it has a very well written story as the mystery of a character's life and what haunts him is revealed one layer at a time.

An interesting and touching psychological story with you playing as John... a man who has entered the mind of Luke Williams in an attempt to save him during a personal crisis.
The art, music, and voice acting are well done. For the most part, the game is a black and white side scroller with strategically placed touches of color. There are several platforming sequences with one at the end that took me quite a few tries to get through. There are some puzzle elements (turning on equipment, advancing time, etc.).
The story is told through flashbacks and dialog, with scenes flipping between time lines which can be a bit confusing. There is A LOT of dialog which you really have to absorb to make the story fit together.

The game does not have a contrast/brightness setting and I have my monitor turned up as far as it will go. However, there were scenes that were so dark (as in the absence of light) that I struggled to see the character. I watched a walkthrough and other players may not have this experience.

For the most part, achievements are earned as the story advances. You do have to be very aware of your surroundings to achieve 100% (which is awarded by Chapter 8, well ahead of the game's ending).

I recommend this to those who enjoy an emotional story with a bit of running and jumping.

Is shadowy 2d puzzler a genre now? The story is you're inside someone's mind, trying to fix trauma. Movement can be a bit janky, but the puzzles all work well and the voice acting adds a nice touch

This game shines a light on a very serious topic. And it's all done through incredible storytelling. It's a game that on first glance seems simple but for me resulted in an emotional journey. Filipe's way of visually keep it simple and beautiful while letting the music and voice acting drive it forward is a perfect way to talk about topics still taboo for many people today.

It takes about 4 hours to complete the game but the memory from it will stay longer than that.

I liked the graphics, the music, the immersive dream-like world, the non-linear storytelling, the voice acting.

Biggest minus are the sluggish controls, which aren't actually an issue until late in the game where there's a tricky platforming sequence. I couldn't get past that and it felt I was fighting the controls and physics of the game much more than having any satisfying dexterity challenge. It doesn't help that I'm on keyboard and the keyboard layout is not ideal and I couldn't change it. If I had expected a tricky platforming section, I probably wouldn't have got the game since I don't currently own a controller.

As for the story, as it progressed it steered away from the depression topic and I didn't really like that turn. A bunch of tired gender tropes made me annoyed at Luke more than anything. Not sure if there's a plot twist toward the end that mitigates some of that, seeing that everything is a dream anyway.

The game took me about 4 hours to complete but the length for this game was just about perfect as it never felt too long or too short. The subject matter is important but it also works as a game. The story is one of the strongest I have come across in any adventure game I played this year with fascinating in depth characters who we are constantly rooting for, even when they make bad choices. The game also looks incredible and uses its art style and colours to help tell its story more effectively. To top it off the music is enchanting and beautiful with some high quality voice acting. All of this ensures that this is one of the best and most emotional games of the year and it’s a game that will stay in your memory long after playing it.

I loved the game! This is not my game genre but I must give it 4.6/5 stars!

Disclaimer: I'm more of an action/RPG/strategy guy, than a fan of story-driven games like this one, so I'm going to be more judgy. Also, this review is spoiler free.

Let me in fact start by the negatives. Given my gamer background I think the early-early game is a little too slow for me. Fortunately it does pick up the pace from there and keeps getting better and better. Secondly, I would give this game an even better score, but for someone who's used to play mostly AAA games, there was some minor lack of polish in the jump animations whilst jumping around that I liked less. Again, nothing critical, but those are my main reasons to reduce the score in this review.

Now that we got out of the way that I'm not even the type of gamer that appreciates this kind of game, how come it has such an high score? I'd say for a genre of game that's not quite my fancy, this game made me eat my own words and perception of the genre in a great way as I kept playing.

The scenarios in this game are really pretty and music as well, as you can understand just looking at the demo or advertising material. It's very varied and yet consistent throughout, with only positive surprises along the way. I guess it does have its own art style and for me at least is much more eye-catching than Limbo for instance, to which most will compare it.

Regarding gameplay, you will jump and surely sometimes fall, and meanwhile maybe scratch your head a bit to solve some puzzles. Fortunately, all puzzles are doable and quite logical, even if some might not seem so at first. Nothing like Myst 2 puzzle-craziness :)

Where this game does really shine is the story though. I won't spoil it, but the whole concept is something completely refreshing and new!
Also, unlike many other games, that start to get more predictable, the more you play this one the better it gets at all levels.

The voice acting is all good to great quality, and only makes the story more vibrant. There are also some tidbits of amazing voice acting, some of the best I've heard in a game EVER. I challenge you not to smile when you listen to Anne. She's just a too damn sweet of a kid, you don't feel like she's just a character in the game, but as real as you and me, of flesh and blood! You might also just feel happy from hearing her :p

I could promote it more but I don't want to spoil it for you. I can only say I've played way over 100 games in my life and never ever found one with such a strong message about life. It really makes you stop to ponder, and value several things, specially your loved ones. Emotionally this is quite strong and I admit it made me cry a bit, in a good way.

As I said, this game keeps getting better and better. At some points I even got goosebumps (for real). With a lot of accumulated tension, when I finished this game I naturally stopped to gaze the intro screen and music for 10 whole minutes while the emotions of this rollercoaster ride sink in.

Definitely recommend this game! You go and try it and tell me if you don't think the same!

Into a Dream is the project presented by the hands of Filipe F. Thomaz. The same that also gives hands to the music that serves as the basis for this surrealist title with side-scrolling mechanics and a little exploration.

The player will step into the shoes of John Stevens and embark on an exciting journey through the subconscious of Luke Williams, going through his memories to understand the root of his depression in an attempt to free him from negative thoughts.

This title presents an interesting narrative and although it is presented as having a strand in relation to depression that is very present, it addresses other pertinent themes, such as sacrifice, family problems, guilt, and even death.

Regarding gameplay, it is a very simple game that has a bit of exploration mechanics, puzzle, and a smell of the platform genre, however, these sections tend to be quite short. To progress through the different sections it is necessary to interact with people, or in this case figures, or collect elements that give access to previously closed areas. With regard to puzzles, they are mainly environmental, based on physics, such as the need to find an object that helps to cross the river or to find any missing element, such as a lever or a key.

In graphical terms Into a Dream presents a simple aesthetics, based on silhouettes, reminiscent of titles like Limbo. Although a little bit more detailed and varied since the environments have different colors and lighting.

Helping to create the right atmosphere for the lines of voice and text that the game presents, is the simplistic but effective soundtrack, which features themes produced by Filipe himself. It is important to note that the whole experience is accompanied by voices instead of presenting only lines of text. This point surprised me as it helps to create a connection between player and characters and is really not very common in titles of this kind.

Damn, this game was powerful... As someone who played the demo and instantly became super hyped from this game... It definitely delivered. Such an emotional (but good) experience, man. Can be quite confusing at times because of the time skip stuff, but it's still genuinely good.

Other than the story though, the OST is damn solid (might buy it at some point if I feel like it) and the graphics might be some of the best I've ever seen, honestly (like seriously, I could easily slap any screen from this game as my desktop wallpaper and be happy with it). I also appreciate that the game is fully voice acted!

Still though, there are a couple of minor gripes I have:

- The fact that you have to press right or left to continue running when you enter a new screen, because the momentum from running doesn't carry over (if that makes sense). Can be pretty annoying.
- The grab detection for platforming isn't the best. Ledge grabs half the time can take a couple of jumps to land down, whereas I wish you could just get them first try.
- The game did start to feel padded imo after level 8, despite the story still being solid. Probably could've been cut down a bit if you ask me.
- Wtf is that second hidden achievement? It's the only one I didn't unlock and can't figure it out for the life of me :(

All in all though, highly recommended. Though it might be best to try the demo out first (if it's still up, idk), since the game isn't exactly cheap.

Omg omg omg!!! I can’t say enough great things about this game! The story is so amazing and truly takes the player through a wide variety of emotions! I laughed, I cried, I was anxious, I was happy, and I was hooked!!! Such an emotional roller coaster that doves deep into the dark crevasses of depression and what some people deal with on a daily basis! So powerful! And the art style, holy cow! Such beautiful art and music! Very impressive game all around from top to bottom and from beginning to end! I was fortunate enough to be involved with testing this game, and it’s amazing to see it now on its final form!!!

Although Into A Dream may look simple on the surface, this charming indie title offers a stunning narrative that is well voice-acted (every character has a voice) and as equally well written.

The overall mechanics are pretty simple, think side scrolling walking sim combined with a basic point and click adventure. This 'simplistic' gameplay approach actually work really well in acting as a vehicle for the games true star, it's story.

The story here really hit a personal note with me, which is a huge credit to the writing and imagination of the narrative. In fact, the game's narrative is so well delivered I was genuinely asking the question at the end 'is this game based on a true story?'.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, quick in-and-out game then Into A Dream isn't for you. If you're looking to be wrapped up in a story with a nice cup of coffee (or two) and lose yourself for a few hours in a dream like game then Into A Dream is definitely a game you should check out.

Into a Dream – A Journey through Another’s Subconscious

Into a Dream is a varied experience, mixing simple walking simulator mechanics with a small selection of puzzles and platforming sections. It has a lot to offer in terms of styling and narrative, but it is a little rough around the edges, the price tag is a little steep and it doesn’t really justify or need the 3 – 4 hours of playtime required to complete the game. The misrepresentation of the product in terms of it's mental health themes, small bugs and issues and general need for polishing make this title that difficult recommend with a series of provisos!
