The original Fabled Lands gamebooks, written by Dave Morris and Jamie Thomson, and beloved by many, have been transformed into an epic, digital adventure of interactive fiction with a massive game world. Be anyone you want: explorer, merchant, priest, scholar, thief, wizard, or soldier of fortune. Buy ships, goods, and townhouses, join a temple, risk desperate adventures in the wilderness, or embroil yourself in court intrigues and the sudden violence of city backstreets. Undertake missions that will earn you allies and enemies, or remain a free agent and choose your own objectives. With hundreds of quests and locations to explore, the choices are all yours.

EXPLORE THE FABLED LANDS
  • Open World Revolution rages in a war-torn kingdom. You can join forces with the king to restore his throne - or look for profit in the pay of the dictator. Use fighting skills or sorcery, bribery or skulduggery to survive the assassins in city backstreets. Descend to the sewers of Yellowport to defeat the vile rat-king. Retrieve the golden net of the gods from the Repulsive Ones deep beneath the sea - and use the rewards of your victories to travel beyond the boundaries of the known in the world of Harkuna. Your journeys will bring you foes and friends, danger and triumph, fortune and fame - and more adventures than you thought.
  • Loot and Riches
  • Amass wealth, honours and power that will take you on voyages to uncharted regions. You can sail the high seas to distant ports. Plunder ancient treasures and do battle with the legions of darkness in the hall of the death-god. Penetrate the labyrinth of lies and sinister secrets of the scheming merchants of Golnir.

CHOOSE YOUR PATH
  • An old-school RPG A solitaire role playing game in a pick your own adventure style like no other. Explore a giant open-ended world, where you can truly travel, investigate, and meddle with things, when and as you see fit to do so.
  • Create YOUR Character
  • Write your own story! You can be a warrior, using weapons and combat skills to strike down all opponents; a mystical mage, skilled in sorcery; a clever rogue, acquiring wealth by theft and trickery; a daring wayfarer, probing and charting the forgotten reaches of the wilderness; a priest, fighting dark monsters with the holy fires of faith; or a troubadour, charming all you meet on your many fabulous exploits.
  • Tactical Combat
  • Hideous dangers await travellers in this savage land. Brigands, trolls, golems, flying heads, assassins, vampires, kelpies, demons, abominable cults, the undead, and many more - all of them will vanquish the unsuspecting adventurer.

SURVIVE AGAINST ALL ODDS
  • Permadeath Would you like to raise the stakes? Experience Ironman mode, where every decision is irreversible and your character dies once and for all.
  • Temples
  • Choose a deity and obtain its blessing. But remember: once an initiate, if you are to renounce a god or a goddess there is a price. Do you want to reconsider?
  • Ships
  • Buy your own ship: upgrade it and recruit a crew - their abilities might prove the difference when surviving a storm or vicious buccaneers. Fill your ship with valuable cargo and find where to sell it for profit.

TLDR; This is an absolutely fantastic and faithful creation of the fabled lands gamebook series in a digital medium. For fans of the series or anyone who likes the idea of a choose your own adventure in an open world this is an easy recommend.

Fabled lands is a game-book series from the 90's. One of the key distinctions of the series was to an attempt an open world, linking 12 books (of which only 6 were published at the time, although a 7th has been recently released in 2018) that formed a world map where the player was able to pretty much go wherever they wanted to go and form their own story to a greater or lesser extent. The books absolutely achieved that aim even if the world was incomplete with half the planned books not being published.

This digital version of the books was one I tried initially and bounced off, actually requesting a refund after purchasing at the beginning of early access, the interface was a little clunky and there was still alot that needed to be added. I took the plunge to try the game again this week and I have to say I'm really glad I did.

The interface is much improved, there is useful signposting to help you keep track if you come back after a break from the game and there are enough of the books incorporated to give a true sense of the scale of the world (books 1,2 and 4 are in here already with book 5 on the way).

As much as it pains me to admit as a fan of the original books there are places where this game has improved upon the original system as well, Allowing characters to embark on quests for other professions [after a skill check] while keeping the largest rewards from those quest-lines profession specific this makes each play-through richer and the game more respectful of your time. The full colour map you play on helps bring the world to life even more vividly and art direction/palette of the game is fantastic, perfect for a fantasy open world choose your own adventure game.

As for criticisms, I don't have many - obviously you have to be happy reading lots of text. Most of the joy here is in the player decisions and story-telling, both of which are primary delivered through text, there is strategy to the game in terms of how you approach a problem and how that fits your characters skill set but if you don't enjoy reading you'll hit a limit on how much you can get out of the game.

Other than that the only thing I wish there was more of was some of the illustrations that were present in the game books, would love if a few more of those made them into the game, particularly for some of the more dramatic story-lines and quests you undertake!

The rest is just the wait for more of the world to be included!

I like the art style and the presentation. Other than that the game didn't do anything super interesting -- for example I think Wildermyth has more going for it and feels like it's in a similar space.

I'm not sure how I'm supposed to keep going with this game other than save scumming. I know I'm rolling dice like in a TTRPG but feels like every run goes like this: fail a roll and lose all my money and half my health in one event. Then I try to travel somewhere else on the map, get in a fight, and die instantly.

Not very fun.

I loved the Fabled Lands books as a kid and this has really brought them to life. The developer seems to be making a good balance between updating some of the gameplay mechanics while keeping true to the books.

I'll admit I wasn't sure about the combat system when I first got the game, but actually really enjoy it, along with the skills/passives system that has been introduced. I think it's a great addition to the content of the books.

There's a steep learning curve, like there always was, but the addition of different game modes and the ability to save-reload on non-iron man mode gives nice options.

I love the game, I'm really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. If you liked the original books and/or other adventure books I think it'd be hard to dislike this. If you like RPGs in general it's definitely worth a look at it.

This is a really solid start which is keeping the magic of the original gamebooks alive. Anyone who enjoys turn based RPG is sure to love this. It's a little tough at the moment with limited combat options and dice roll outcomes, and I'd like to see it a little more streamlined when it comes to travel across the map and keeping track of your quests and objectives, but a lot of thought has been put into this before EA release and it shows.

An absolutely excellent version based on the original books! I read/played all six books as a youth many times over and this re-imagining of those books is truly excellent! Art work is stunning, game play is solid. It's as hard to put down as it was back in the day! I cannot wait to get into the future additions of this game as they are released!

Fabled Lands does it's own clever job in adapting a game from one medium to another. Because it was originally a gamebook, its original mechanics were all around the narrative. Here, it gets a new and detailed tactical experience that stands completely on its own, but that is about the same difficulty level as the text game. In the end, the experience is satisfying anew to go through the narrative as the framework for a tactical core.

There is very little to do with very little variety. Most encounters seem to have only one favourable outcome with one way to reach it and if your stats don't match that, tough luck. You either keep reloading until you pass the check or the bad outcome kills your character instantly. Travelling get's annoying incredible fast as the minor sites just repeat the same events over and over again, e.g. ff you find an item it will be the same item every time.

This is a chose your own adventure book with two dices and honestly, the writing isn't that good either.

This is an old fashioned choose your adventure book done RPG style. You will need to visit each area multiple times just to see all the possible choices. It uses dice (RNG) to determine success or failure, meaning a 1% can succeed and a 99% chance can fail. Branching quest lines mean you will have to play it more than once to finish everything. You can lose everything you possess with a single bad choice/dice roll, including your life. Good news is you can get 'resurrection deals' to keep going. This game is not for the impatient or those who need instant gratification. If you are an old school gamer who has been playing computer, table top and reading adventure books since the 80's, you will loved this game.

It's just a generally fun single player game to play to pass the time, although it is a little luck based most of it can be overcome with good strategy and planning, the only problem with the game is that it is extremely challenging without game knowledge, from what i can see this leads people to get very frustrated and quit early on, i understand the frustration of not being able to progress within the early game due to unlucky dice rolls and random extremely hard challenges but if you play the game starting with explorer mode and work slowly to understand the game and get better then it will be a much more enjoyable experience and you wont be upset after every little unlucky mishap, and then you can play on the harder mode and completely give up on this game due to its insane difficulty... still 100% recommend the game

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Yes, it's tough in the beginning and yes RNG can screw you but after a few hours of exploring I found myself getting lost in the world/lore, acquiring better gear and stat boosts and found myself passing more and more checks. Best advice? If you can't succeed a roll, you can always come back.

EDIT: I should add, the quests are well written and often have multiple paths to complete. In addition, there are loads of little events you can stumble upon while exploring. I'm not familiar with the books, but this has inspired me to look into them.

Fabled Lands is an open-world RPG adapted from a series of 90s gamebooks. It stays very close to the source material (reading text and rolling dice remains the main activity), but features a modern UI, a beautiful overhead map and a more tactical combat system.

The game does not have a main quest, leaving instead the player free to determine how they want to enjoy it. Its best feature is probably the exploration: roaming the world, never quite knowing what unexpected adventure will emerge from your choices and the dice rolls, is a delight.

Completionists can also challenge themselves to complete as many of the game's dozens of objectives as they can, while people with more determination than I can try the ironman mode in which your save is destroyed if you die.

As I write this review, the game has been in Early Access for a month. Two regions are available to explore, offering about a dozen hours of gameplay. Two more regions are planned to be added before launch, with more afterwards (as DLC). The game has already received several updates. The lead developer has been active in the Steam forums and on discord, and responsive to bug reports, comments and suggestions. This makes me feel very confident about the game's continued development.

Fabled Lands is adaptation from the open world gamebook series of the same name, originally written in the 1990s.

If you are not familiar with the original books, what you can expect is a primarily text-based adventure in a medieval world in pen and paper style, accompanied by pretty illustrations and graphic UI. This isn't your typical RPG game. There isn't a single main story to follow, instead you explore the world and do whatever you please. Dice rolls determine the outcome of events, danger lurks around every corner, and your adventure only ends when you die permanently.

Save scumming is encouraged to familiarize yourself with the world, but ironman mode is also available for those who like a challenge and a real risk of death with one wrong step.

Those who played the books will find this a largely faithful rendition of your experience. There are some changes, arguably for the better, such as a whole new strategic combat system, and previously profession locked quests and events now have an opportunity to be accessed by other professions so you can experience it all on one character.

If you liked the books, you should definitely pick this up. For those who never played the books, this game is a great way to experience some good old adventures in the Fabled Lands.

This is a really good rpg game

+ Amazing art style
+ Interesting story
+ Even though it's an early access game i didn't encounter bugs, glitches or crashes.
+ interesting decision making

+- Low replay value, since there is no randomization you will encounter the same quests, enemies and secrets. On the other hand you can choose better outcomes on your second and third replay and I actually like it.

- No autosave is an issue, this should be an option when you start the game. It wouldn't break the experience and I find it hard to focus if i need to constantly remember to save.

I would rate it 8/10 overall a good experience.

I don't think this game will have a broad appeal in its current state. When raising issues of game design and why it comes off as bad for players the dev's attitude is 'well people beat it on ironman mode so you're wrong'. I don't know the source material, but what i surmise is it's a choose your own adventure rng death trap. What you see in the marketing on the store front is very misleading. 'Choose your path' doesn't show that many paths are death. 'tactical combat' that is shallow and pointless. 'complete hundreds of quests' that are hardly quests. Sorry guys but the writing in fabled lands is not good; it doesn't hold a candle to most rpgs that also have real gameplay. Though that's not a dev issue this is afterall just from the source material. If you know the fabled lands books and you like them this game is appropriate for you. if you're just browsing rpgs and came across this i advise you to stay away. The information provided up front is not honesty about what the game is.

*Early Play Review*

Before proceeding further, reader understand the type of game that Fabled Lands is! Fabled Lands is a true to source material remake of the classic Gamebook series of the same name.

*What is a Gamebook?*

Before computers were everywhere? Tabletop RPGs, choose your own adventure novels, and Gamebooks were very popular. Gamebooks were essentially a combination of classic Tabletop RPGs and the CYOA novels. You would roll dice, make decisions and the book would say which page to go to. Make a wrong choice, bad stuff happens, potentially dying and that ends your character. You have a character sheet you track through the books. Fabled Lands series being one of the most well known and sought after sets.

What these Developers have done is faithfully recreated this experience for the computer. Do not purchase or expect a typical CRPG experience because it is not. This is more relateable perhaps to a Visual Novel experience, but far more interactive and non linear. The way decisions are made, progression and consequences are all true to classic gamebook style, meaning if you go to the wrong place? Poof, you might just die. But the developers didn't just make a straight copy, taking advantage of computer to expand upon that which a book couldn't do well, such as combat.

EARLY ACCESS

Just a reminder it is early access. But so far my experience is that it is entirely that because of story development. Gameplay is robust and able to be expanded upon easily. However there are only the two books iirc. It has a fair value of cost to gameplay return, but at this time do not be expecting hundreds of hours of gameplay. It is open world, but within the limits of it is a Gamebook, so limited to the existing narrative.

PRELIMINARY GAMEPLAY FEEDBACK

So far? It is very well done. They have done an excellent job of translating print to PC. Minor things easily addressed as part of early access that is just quality of life ideas not affecting gameplay. Menus are intuitive, and easy on the eyes to read.

*Visuals: Visually, it is fantastic. The visuals preserve the style of the books, but enhanced for the PC screen. The hand drawn style, presentation of information in an artistically detailed books and vibrant colors all feel very welcoming to an experience where the player is reading. *REMEMBER* this is a Gamebook, reading the story is a major part of the experience, the combat and such is just side to it. Colorations and such seem perfectly balanced and not finding my eyes getting tired at all which can happen for me reading lots on pc. No eye strain or headache.

*Combat: It is a simple, but nice addition. Maintains the bit of randomness the original books would have, but they took advantage of the computer to add a bit of strategy to it. Not overly complex or time consuming, just a bit of player agency into what would otherwise be dice rolling.

*Music: Fun and thematically appropriate for what you are reading. Smooth switching of music as appropriate, perfect background sound and quite relaxing.

*Transitions: This might seem like an odd addition, but it really shows the details these developers have put into things so far. Everything has really nice fade or move out. Even the Escape menu comes in from off screen. No windows just popping in. Everything moves or fade. Just warm and cozy.

Negatives summary

So far in early play? Nothing game breaking or frustrating. The hand art does mean the characters are currently gendered which can be relevant to some players, so forewarning there. My biggest issue I have had with gameplay is the aforementioned smoothness does also translate to map pan and zoom because it's speed doesnt move with the mouse inputs directly, but accelerates and decelerates which does feel un-natural to me.

Conclusion

It is an excellent value!
The attention to fine details and faithfulness to the source materials really reinforces that this is an artistic work of passion. It is not just some money grab. There is clearly lots of work and consideration into all aspects of what you pay for. The price is very reasonable and accessible to all.

REMEMBER! THIS IS A GAMEBOOK REMAKE!

I reinforce above because that is the gameplay experience you will receive. It is fun, enjoyable and relaxing having this type of interactive book. But you might not enjoy it if that is not the content you are wanting. So please, consider and be sure to understand what Gamebooks are to ensure this is the right game for you!

I have played the Fabled Lands game books since I was a kid. When the Java Fabled Lands app came out I was pretty stoked about that, and played it a bunch. When I found out about the Fabled Lands game here on Steam, I was excited and for weeks I've been waiting for this to come out. And yeah, I was not disappointed. I am biased as all hell, and I do not care.

If you're looking for a game that's all gameplay and no story, you won't want to play this. If you want something as streamlined as Neverwinter Nights or the such you'll want to avoid it as well. 70% of the game is text paragraphs, the other 30% is everything else. You have 6 core stats: combat, scouting, thieving, sanctity, magic and charisma. Those are bound to the six classes: warrior, wayfarer, rogue, priest, mage and troubadour. These classes start with a 6 in their respective ability, and then a distribution of the other skills, it's not uncommon for a character to have a 1 in something that isn't useful to their class (such as mages having 1 sanctity). The most powerful stats are scouting and charisma, as they're the stats that are most likely to help you avoid being murdered outside of combat.

The next best stats are magic and sanctity to avoid being cursed by demons or eaten by ghosts. Thieving is a great skill .. if you want to risk getting caught and executed. And finally the one stat that is most helpful in combat is .. combat. If you don't want to end up reloading a whole bunch, you should make arrangement for resurrection at a temple, this can be expensive, but it costs shards while losing your character costs the one thing you can't get back: time.

This game brings me back to when I was DMing for a single player dnd game for my brother. Its got great constant pacing and a solid roguelike gameplay loop. I think it could use some randomization of events to keep replayability up but its pretty dang good as it is with a bit more polish and content additions.

Had to smile when I saw somebody is going to make a video game based on the books so I longed for the day that finally is today! The game creates the same fun I had with the books back then and additionally includes a colorful/beautiful map to travel upon and some enjoyable music. Cant wait to also see Old Harkuna/Uttaku as only four books were published in my language back then. Looking for more after my shift!

Be aware the game works exactly like a solo P&P book. Therefore you'll easily lose/die. If you want to want the full old school experience take the iron man mode. In case you prefer to explore without starting a new game or grinding for shards play without. It's totally up to you how often you use save/load.
