If you want to have a good experience with this one, get the Sots II REFORGED mod.
With this, the game is actually great!

While this game adds some nice upgrades to the original Sword of the Stars, i can't recommend it based on three reasons. The first is that the game isn't stable. It WILL crash, it's just a matter of when. The second is the slowdown that happens as you progress in the game (i'm not sure of the technical term). The longer you play, the longer you will have to wait between turns. And the third is that it's just unfinished. The last faction added (the Loa) doesn't play well, and it feels like the rest of the game is about 80% there.

Unless you are a hardcore fan of the first game (which i DO recommend!) and plan on devoting time and/or installing some mods to smooth out the issues that crop up here, pass this one by and go play the original Sword of the Stars.

Too bad it's still crap. No shortcuts to almost anything, ESC does not work as it should, very awkward fleet management, restricted options in gameplay, too slow paced even for sots standards, lack of customization.

Game which you play exactly as designers wanted, or not at all. Not fun.

A great 4-X game with a lot of customizability regarding ships and technology. The game was rushed and repaired so it will never play like a 100% complete game but still offers a great satisfying experience. Visually stunning for a game of that era. A must try and have for any space lover.

This game has some really interesting lore and world building. Ship design is modular, which is fun. I didn't get to see as much of the technology tree as I would like, but it seems pretty deep. Space combat is pretty fun, there are a lot of controls I wouldn't expect in a strategy game (being able to barrel roll). I really wanted to love this game but there are several things which bother me too much and keep me from recommending this game.
The biggest problem I have with this game is the incomplete encyclopedia. The repeated meteor showers and ghost ship coming undetected (Ghost ship makes sense, meteor shower doesn't) and repeatedly destroying entire colonies, ships, and naval bases does not come across as fun or challenging since this happens early on and consistently. Diplomacy is lackluster early on in the game, and I don't expect it to improve, which is sad considering how much thought is put into the races and even NPCs that I don't know where or when I might've come across them. Play this game to see some great concepts and not expecting any mercy from the RNG. Don't play this game expecting a polished product.

I love this game. When I get to play it, the ship design, the lore, the visual spectacle of the battles. All of it is fun. There are significant improvements to some of the UI design off the first one, and the stations and mission system are excellent additions.

However this game never overcame it's rocky release. All these years later it's still at it's core unpolished. Turn times climb rapidly upwards even on a midsize map. Opening UI elements feels sluggy. It's a real bloody shame.

I really do dream of someone making a mod that is just cleaning up whatever cruft is gumming up the game in the backend, but I don't expect that to happen.

Eh.

This is difficult.

SotS I is my favourite game ever, only rivaled by KSP. The amount of potential in SotS II is just amazing and I've put over 600 hours into it, but there's just too many darn issues with it.

To start off with the good stuff - a lot of the ideas in the game are just perfect for a sequel. I absolutely love the attribute mechanic - best idea ever and perfectly in the spirit of random techs and traits. Armor is done nicely and so are critical hits. I think the expanded tech tree is very interesting and very fun to dig into. Progressing into new techs feels great even if you know all of them by heart already and the prototype system makes you feel the cost of bleeding edge. There's enough options in ships, sections and weapons to satisfy anyone. The factions all still have a completely different feel and the graphics are decent even in 2020.

I don't mind the admiral and fleet mechanics - it's very unintuitive at first, but you can get used to it. A lot of people think it difficult to get a hang of though or just find it plain annoying. It does slow down the game quite a bit - you need to establish more bases before venturing forth, ships need to resupply and so on. Everything takes more turns.

Solar systems are cool, battle riders are fun, system defense boats are a great idea... well, you get my drift.

At first things run rather well, but you quickly get hit with annoying bits. Balance is off in such a way that a few ships can face off against an opposing fleet and neither fleet will be able to actually destroy even a single ship in an engagement. One ship definitely can't destroy another ship within the battle time limit 1v1. This is very annoying. Boarding is way OP on the other hand as you start with boarding pods but no PD. Then there's the missing sounds or voiceovers for some races and commands. And the extremely monotonous music in the background - if any at all, depends on the race. Piracy goes way overboard at the beginning - pirates have fleets larger than some empires.

There's a lot of other minor issues regarding balance, but those are not even close to the main problem, which is that the game gets progressively slower as empires expand and the amount of data increases. And it's not just turn times that are getting slower - going into a menu is much slower in a large, late game than in early game. Basically, all your clicks and actions demand more and more time as you progress. At 500 turns in in a medium-large galaxy it takes multiple minutes for the turn to process (with no visible battles even - on a decent rig) and all you can do is sit and wait for the processing to finish. This just makes the experience more and more exhausting and boring as you near the late game - which is where a lot of the fun is, as the research rate skyrockets.

The game just actively wastes your time. And then there's the crashes. For me, there's 4 main points where I've got crashes or eternal freezes:
- When the first battle after a turn is supposed to start - usually loading takes seconds, but sometimes it just never starts
- When a battle finishes - sometimes the same happens - this is the most frustrating thing in the world - if you're in the 6th battle of 7 and you suddenly realize you'll have to repeat all of them.
- When you click diplomatic things with an independent - just avoid at all costs, crashes randomly, but often. Only accepting things civilian colonies propose works.
- When you click quit in the main menu. Exception : Pure virtual function call, cheers. Obviously not much of a bother.

And that's about it... I still absolutely love Kerberos and SotS. If I bump into a billion $ I'll totally get a SotS3 made.

That said, there's just way too many problems for me to recommend the game with a clear conscience.

Everything that made sots 1 an excellent game ,is tarnished here, only the graphics are worth mentioning other than that , sots 2 has all kinds of obtrusive unintuitive unneeded mechanics, basicly nope.

.sots 2 gameplay , a different game, nobody asked for.
fleet movement nope ( this alone is gamebraking , who the hell asked for this? whatever..)
.surveying ? gtfo, who cares, good grief...sots 1 just visiting unknown systems ...ALL ships had working survery equipemnt,, that was too good, lets retard the game, thought the devs yes thats what the players will love in sots 2 !!
.colonising nope
.diplomacy nope
.prototyping hell no
.cluttered ui, HELL NO, ui from 1 was 99% perfect

after almost 9 years ....Sots 2 goes back from hidden to hidden , since i bought that , seems nr 2 in this game series is FAIL after 9 years still.., hopefully 3 is going to fare better.

there are a few game series that died/nr 2 FAILED...in no chronological order a few examples:

killingfloor 2
kohan 2
starcrap 2(starcraft2)
anno 1503 ( second anno in series )

I loved the first game, and played a lot of it. Looked forward to this one for a LONG time, but its release was the worst release I have ever seen. One of the least important bugs was the entire Settings menu being grayed out and unaccessible. Even now years after release unfortunately the AI cannot understand their own mechanics, autocalculated battles charge your own support ships into the jaws of the enemy defenses while your combat ships fly in circles on the edge of the system. Its just... So disappointing.

So this game's got a bummer of a history. It released an unfinished pile of bugs - an absolute mess.

This is one of the most complicated games I've ever played. There is no tutorial. The UI is utter dogshit, and no game mechanics are remotely explained. It still suffers from a multitude of bugs that can mess up multiplayer.

But even with all that said I've sunk hundreds of hours into this game because the gameplay is so damned deep, complicated, and satisfying. I've never played a more complex multiplayer game in my life.

If you can put the time in to actually figure this game out and find some good opponents, it's incredible.

Even when you know how a feature is supposed to work, it doesn't make sense. There's absolutely no fun to be found in the game, just grueling, endless frustration.

I wish steam had a more neutral stance, as I don't want to detract from a game that does have potential, and am sure would be enjoyed by some, so I'll give this a yes.

The game has great concepts, but the UI is a bit clunky and unintuitive. SotS 1 is a much easier game to play all around and I will probably choose to continue playing that, and only play SotS2 when I want to dink around with something that seems to have more features than its predecessor while ending up spending loads of time just trying to figure out how to do what was so easy to accomplish in the first game. I may keep gnawing at the game, because it does offer some interesting new depth upon SotS1.

SOTS 2 is probably the most interesting video game in history. Wildly ambitious and filled with bonkers ideas, it's too bad the game seems to actively avoid being playable.

SOTS 2 has even more varied factions and wild techs than SOTS 1 did, and for that it's interesting as all hell, and you'd think it would lend itself to lots of playstyles and fun discovery of mechanics and synergies. Unfortunately, it’s hobbled by a pretty terrible UI and horrible feedback about what’s actually happening, and turns take ages to complete. It’s also incredibly punishing in ways that are not fun. For example, you can be minding your own business as a fledgling empire and out of nowhere a planet killer or spectre monster appears and wipes you out without giving you much time or ability to prepare. This could be an interesting mechanic that keeps you on edge and forces you to adapt, but because things are so impenetrable it simply feels arbitrary and mean.

I’d recommend SOTS 1 or Endless Space 2 instead for gameplay, but if you want to study game systems and be immersed in absolutely wild 4x ideas then SOTS 2 is amazing. Of particular interest is comparing SOTS 2 with Endless Space 2; They both try and have wildly varied factions, with many, many ways to play. And they both attempt to keep tension high, and make every decision feel critical. While SOTS 2 tries to do this via its space monsters and random events ES2 does it by having mechanics that strongly interact with each other and strong opportunity costs for each decision. Figuring out good strategies in both is a kind of puzzle, ES2 is much better at teaching you from your mistakes.

If you can get past the UI you can have fun with sots 2, and if you’re interested in game design then there’s a LOT to learn here. Otherwise, unless you are specifically looking for wild ideas, go buy Endless Space, SOTS 1, Distant Worlds, or Stellaris.

SotS2 may or may not be better than SotS1, but the fact that this is a valid question now means SotS2 is worthy of a recommendation.

It was kind of a train wreck at launch, but they did a decent job fixing it. The gameplay probably still isn't for everyone, but if you like building great-looking space ships and fight alien menaces in a world with a lot of interesting lore, it's definitely worth a try.

I loved the SotS 1 and was genuinely excited about this game.

Years ago, I had joined the forums and like many fans, gave input and suggestions. But once the game released... it was a truly crushing experience to witness a product that wouldn't even go beyond the title screen. Time passed. The forum members voluntarily banded together to make community patches to get the game to a playable state. Yet here rests SotS 2 in a sadly broken state. This literally leaves you feeling like your dog has just been run over by a car and as much as you are hoping beyond hope that it will pull through... deep down... you know you have to put it down.

Play the first game and try The Pit and its expansions, but put this game down.

I wish we the had a average rating but I'm giving it a recommend for a few reasons and with 275 hours played and still enjoy it..

Pro'.s
1.Best space combat in 4x.Deep with varied weapon systems and still looks epic and now we have GPU's we can run it maxed and the campaign turns times are faster..Having huge fleets is amazing and slow enough to control on real time.Worth playing just for this.
2.Best tech tree in space 4x.A huge forest worth of techs with most giving valid gameplay strategies rather than the usual % to this and that.
3.Grand grand menaces, randoms, lore.Still the best seen imo.The menaces, randoms act like a game NPC's that can actually win which I love.Stellaris did a good job here but still lacking compared to SOTS1/2.
4.Trade and stations. Both are good mechanics adding a strategic building elements that was lacking in SOTS1.

Con.
The strategic campaign has some great ideas but the mission system just slows it down to a crawl.
Diplomacy has a lot of thought behind it but the U is beyond awful and the A.I basically was never coded to use it.Very frustrating as on paper looked great.
A.I is lacking all round.Fan patches have improved this.
Steep learning curve. You have to read a a lot before playing this.Don't jump straight in.
Bugs,bugs.

Recommended? Sort of.
I bought this at a steep discount years ago (less than 10 bucks), and have alternately loved and hated it ever since.
The game was originally released in a mid-alpha state, resulting in a lot of the rage evidenced in some reviews. After a free expansion, about 50 mid-sized patches and over a hundred micro-patches, what you have is basically a game in permanent mid-beta.

Most of what could be fixed without a complete redesign has been. What remains is an extremely time-consuming, mostly rewarding game that will occasionally infuriate you.

Put simply, the Mars2 engine is a paper tiger; anyone who's seen videos of a North Korean Parade knows what I'm talking about here. Yes, it can display some very pretty and entertaining visuals and doesn't do too badly handling most of the strategic- or combat- layer graphics that make the game fun. No, it simply cannot handle the dataload imposed upon it by an eight-player game.

SotS 2's real saving grace is that it is extremely easy to mod, tweak, break, or bend to suit your gaming style. All you need is a basic grasp of English, some logical thinking skills, and a text editor. Most of the .entity, .section, etc. files are simple xml-coded text files. A free sqlite database editor will allow you to change almost anything in your saved games, too. Want to research everything? about 15 mins. with the .techtree file and my bugs -and bugs only- can play with every tech that matters to a bug (and some that don't). *Spoiler* This and some creative finacing gets me every tech in about 250 turns.

The bad news: This game is never getting finished, is a resource hog, and crashes whenever it bites off more than it can chew. The multiple redundant autosaves are a lifesaver, but getting past some turn-to-turn crashes will require you to figure out which event was the straw that broke the engine's back. If we want this game to work perfectly, we'll have to redesign it ourselves, XML is easy to edit, but extremely wasteful coding (Micro soft-in-the-head designed xml). If Kerberos had gone with a more machine-centric scripting language, This game would be an all-time bestseller but would be much harder to mod.

Tech Specs:
You don't need a datashredder to play this game well (at least as well as it can be played). gen 3 core i3's in quad-core mode, or fm2-based quad cores are probably okay on data processing here, Sots2 cannot fully utilize 6 or 8 cores, so your best bets are a decent i5 or i7 from Intel (not necesessarily new), Kaveri-based quad core, or Vishera based CPU from AMD. My FX-8350 occasionally reaches 20% load, but I've modded the heck out of most game files to make battles more exciting. My A10-4600 laptop can run the vanilla game well.

My old GTX 480 video card is overkill for the vanilla game at 1920x1080 with max detail, but I sometimes get a little hitching with all the extra ships and weapons I've modded into some battles. Integrated video on an Intel chip won't get you anywhere, but the mid-range gaming qualites of an A10 laptop iGPU or A8 desktop iGPU is okay if you have extra RAM -see next-

Memory!!! This is why you must have 64-bit windows. Don't have 8gb? Don't bother!. Between the poor engine choice, the leaky and ineffecient coding, and the sheer amount of data that needs to be crunched, this game eats memory fast. At turn 200 on a medium-large map with 4 of 5 players still alive and about half the map occupied, I'm using 20% of the 32gb of DDR3 in my desktop. My modding has a role to play there, but years of trial and error have shown me that 8-player games are simply not practical on nearly any machine with this game engine, and 6-player matches require a custom computer with about $1k worth of parts in them. An 8gb computer with dedicated graphics can run Vanilla okay most of the time with 2-4 players.

The Bottom Line-
Is this an extremely time-consuming game? Yes! -though it's really not as bad as 90% of mmos- Is Sots 2 often frustrating? Yes! Is it rewarding to play for 3 days, get to turn 220 and take a huge nap? Yes!! Is all of this really worth the hassle and a sizeable chunk of money? Probably not for 70% of gamers who like consoles even a little. This is a great game for guys like me who've been gaming on semi-high-end computers since the late 90's. Getting the game into the state I have it in now is like owning the Millennium Falcon: You spend a lot of time now and then figuring out what's wrong with your mod, or if it's even your fault or the devs. You put some real effort into understanding and modifying this rustbucket of a game, have a lot of fun and get really frustrated when you spend an hour getting your empire just where you want it for turn 221 and it crashes just before you get around to saving. (Think Escape from Hoth in episode 5 here). The real fun is taking a mostly functional scrapheap of a YT-1300 and trying to make it really fly (metaphorically speaking). Actual gameplay is a little better than the reality of war: Most of what you do during a turn isn't all that exciting, but it's pretty wild when space-lizards, telepathic dolphins and rat slavemasters all decide they want to cook you in your chitin just before you get the chance to nuke their homeworlds. Thanks for reading my super-long post. I think it says something that I recommend this game to at least some people right after the metaphorical Falcon decided not to enter hyperspace with Rat Vader coming for me.
